Bride Plans to Marry Her Bicycle

The newlyweds plan to depart from northern California and ride south.

Everything the wingnuts feared would happen as a result of gay marriage is now coming true.

After 15 years together, Lisa Nelson has decided to marry Steel Spokes, her beloved bicycle. The next day, the Spokes shall depart on a six-month bicycle touring honeymoon. On March 2, 2014, the unusual couple will tie the knot in Pacifica, just South of San Francisco. The Hawaiian themed affair will have the bridesmaids dressed in hula attire, complete with a flower girl, and a ring-bearing pooch (also appropriately dressed). The wedding party and assorted guests will be on bicycle. The entourage plans to cycle along the ocean to the old Pacifica Courthouse for the marriage ceremony. A festive luau reception shall follow.

I can’t tell from the picture, but if it’s a girl’s bike then I don’t see a problem.

If it is a male bicycle then there is no problem at all.

Can imagine the awkwardness if their child showed up at the first day of school and didn’t know which direction to kick the kick stand towards?

btw, this has to fit in:

I’m fairly certain baby bicycles wouldn’t be up screaming at all hours of the night, like my poor friend’s kid. (They’re finally working on sleep training. He’s 16 months? And still doesn’t sleep through the night.)

The penny-farthings and velocipedes are going to be absolutely livid over this non-traditional rider-conveyance relationship.

Of course, us heathen heretic godless childfree couples don’t have to worry about that. With our non-useful marriages and all.

Now wait a minute. Let’s think this through, like rational theologians. Was the person / bicycle wedding caused by the legalization of same-sex marriage? Or was it caused by inadequate fidelity to the ten commandments? Discuss.

Hah, it depends. Is this a male or female bike?

You can have multiple wives, not multiple husbands, after all.

So, I do now have some plans for the future.

I will be going for the Alternative route to becoming a teacher in Oklahoma. The whole process will take 3-4 years, meaning I stay here for that time.

After that, I will likely want to move to Pittsburgh. It’s a good city. Not only that, but is it centrally located among the large concentrations of Muslims in NYC, New Jersey, Virginia, Michigan, and Illinois.

I am hoping to find someone in the community here in that time. With most of my friends now being Pakistani, and doing their best to take care of my emotional health, I am largely looking in that community.

Not looking for other converts out of some level of paranoia, and British Muslims are written off too.

54 darthstar  Fri, Feb 21, 2014 8:53:19pm

I’m proud to say this will be taking place about 10 miles from my home. Yeah, it’s corny…but it’s just a way of getting under the religious right’s skin (which is thin enough as it is).

55 Kilroy01  Fri, Feb 21, 2014 8:54:10pm

Maybe it will be an open marriage.

Be sure you check what the requirements are in PA, if you plan to move that direction after you are done, but I applaud wanting to become a teacher. Several of my friends have investigated the alternate route and a few have chosen to pursue it and are very happy.

As for the rest, well, if you concentrate on making yourself the best person you can be, then I suspect it will fall into place. Life has a habit of surprising you.

61 darthstar  Fri, Feb 21, 2014 9:06:06pm

Speaking of cycling, I got my first flat tire riding my road bike last weekend. Talk about scary! I haven’t had a flat tire in close to 40 years. For a moment, I wondered what the proper way to handle the situation was. Do I call AAA? It’s not a car! Do I call a cab and have them come pick me and my bicycle up and drive us home? People change their own bike flats all the time! So I did…I took the back tire off (including getting it off the chain and that expando hingy thing that doesn’t make any sense, and then took out the little plastic tire-changing tool (three plastic sticks…didn’t make any sense…but I went with it.) Soon I realized that the plastic sticks had hooked ends for a reason, and as I pried the tire up over the edge of the rim, I was able (with the hooked ends) to secure the sticks to the spokes on the wheel. This gave me enough latitude to remove the rest of the tire…or at least half of it. From there, it was just a matter of pulling out the old tube, and unfolding the new one to put inside the tire.

Then came the exciting part…how to get the air (which was outside all around me) into the tire with enough force to inflate it? I didn’t have a pump…but I did have this handy little CO2 cartridge with a screw on nipple. I put it together, placed it over the tire nib, and…nothing. I thought, maybe I did something wrong? So I started to unscrew the CO2 cartridge when suddenly, WHOOSH! It filled the tire completely! (and got quite cold to the touch).

The take away here is, at the ripe young age of 49, I’m no longer afraid of getting a flat tire when I ride.

Start big. Sub-Zero. Negotiate down from there. No need to spend $10,000 on a fridge, but you should find something very nice for $1200…no need to dive all the way down to the under $700 models.

You can get a lot of fridge for that. Think about space (height, width, depth)…if you have flexibility here, you can do quite well. If you’re in a standard fridge-box size, then you need to consider how much you love the surrounding walls.

What’s the alternative route in OK? I did an MA in Teaching program in KY, and it took less than 2 years. 3-4 years sounds like you’re in a regular bachelors-level program for teacher ed. What’s your subject specialty going to be?

I know two Pakistani women quite well. Both are beautiful and talented in the careers. Unfortunately for you and me, both are married.

Pittsburgh is a decent town. I had family who lived in Uniontown, a former coal town not far away. I don’t recommend Uniontown.

Best photo from the Ukraine I’ve seen is this one. At first you think it might be yet another 1000 meter stare, but he’s aware of the photographer. He’s tired. He’s not happy. But he’s doing what he has to and hasn’t hit burnout yet. This is the kind of person every human should aspire to being.

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects”. -R. A. Heinlein

Emails Suggest Walker Aides Ran Illegal Vote-Purging Scheme

Emails released this week appear to show Governor Scott Walker’s top aides engaging in an illegal scheme to “cage” Wisconsin voters in the weeks ahead of the 2010 gubernatorial election.

Voter caging is an illegal campaign practice used to purge voters from the rolls. Neighborhoods with large minority concentrations are most typically targeted by caging operations.

On page 15,037 of WalkerDocs 1, an email exchange between Walker staffers Kelly Rindfleisch and Nicole Simmons spells it out pretty plainly.

“If you come this Saturday I can show you how to cage,” Simmons writes. “That will be priority on the weekend.”

You know, the problem is that the Ukraine is like many other of the SSRs when the Soviet Union busted up. The easternmost area is full of ethnic Russians who don’t speak Ukranian. They have no real connection with the western two thirds of the country. Cede Kharkiv and the surrounding area to the south and southeast, including the Crimea, back to Russia. Otherwise, there will be no peace.

These are tribal fights that go back hundreds of years.

Bob Costas Talks of Brutality in Ukraine Amid ‘Vladimir Putin’s Games’

Twenty minutes into the penultimate night of Olympic competition from Sochi, Bob Costas took a few minutes to highlight today’s gold medal-winning Ukrainian women’s biathlon relay team amid the backdrop of the violence that raged in their home country this week. “There are about 40 Ukrainian athletes in Sochi,” Costas noted. “They requested to compete with black arm bands. That request was denied.”

Costas then talked about the success of the XXII Winter Olympics. Security has held up, venues have been praised and the warmth of the host country has shone through, he said, before tearing into the Russian regime: “While Russian citizens have better lives than Soviet citizens of a generation ago, theirs is still a government which imprisons dissidents, is hostile to gay rights, sponsors and supports a vicious regime in Syria, and that’s just a partial list.”

Well done Bob, well done.

re: #79 austin_blue

You know, the problem is that the Ukraine is like many other of the SSRs when the Soviet Union busted up. The easternmost area is full of ethnic Russians who don’t speak Ukranian. They have no real connection with the western two thirds of the country. Cede Kharkiv and the surrounding area to the south and southeast, including the Crimea, back to Russia. Otherwise, there will be no peace.

These are tribal fights that go back hundreds of years.

The majority of this is based on false premises. Most ethnic Russians in the Ukraine view themselves as politically Ukrainian. There hasn’t been any revenge against them or efforts to stamp out the Russian language as was done to ethnic Ukrainians under the Soviet Union. There’s also no real animus between the two group, at least not approaching the kind that existed between Georgia and the residents of South Ossetia. During the independence vote support for separation from Russia was about 90% nationwide and was 56% in Crimea, where it was least popular. Over time that sentiment has only grown stronger The people in the east want to maintain close ties with Russia, but the overwhelming majority of them adamantly do not want to be annexed back under Russian control. Via the Moscow Times:

If pursued, it would be a strategy based on self-delusion. There is no viable separatist movement in southern or eastern Ukraine, not even in the Crimea. Nor is there any public clamor for restoring a historic union with Russia. Strong public opinion in the South and East regions against the Euromaidan in Kiev and in favor of the Customs Union by no means translates into support for secession. Opinion polls in Donetsk and Lugansk regions in 2012 showed that only 2 percent support a full union with Russia.

Ethnic Russians and Russian-speaking Ukrainians are not threatened with violence. There is little likelihood of violent clashes or civil war between western and eastern parts of Ukraine. The language differences have ceased to be an issue. Efforts at replaying the World War II conflict between Ukrainian nationalists and Soviet forces are comical theatrics.

Russian interference to encourage secession of parts of Ukraine would be condemned in the West and elsewhere. What’s more, Russia would encounter instability and possibly armed resistance in the secessionist regions, injecting instability into Russia proper and incurring staggering costs.

A major confrontation with the West would ensue, with Russia isolated internationally. China would not be on Russia’s side either. Western economic sanctions, asset freezes and visa restrictions would be likely, crippling Russia’s economy. This is hardly a price worth paying for geopolitical glory.

Notable bullshit:

All appointed employees will be prohibited from organizing or participating in fundraising for Scott Walker’s campaign committee. (100 Day Agenda and Walker’s current policy in county government)

Scott Walker will propose legislation to prohibit closed caucus meetings and to require that all votes in Legislative committees take place in public.

Chipotle creates show for Hulu instead of running TV ads

Instead of launching a traditional advertising campaign, Chipotle is creating a 4-episode series for Hulu.

The show, “Farmed and Dangerous” is meant to spotlight the world of industrial agriculture, which Chipotle goes out of its way to avoid in its fast food business. The show presents PetroPellet, a petroleum-based animal feed that promises to cut the costs of growing and transporting feed. The plot is meant to show that the industrial agriculture machine will do anything to cut costs and pays little to no attention to the food product that is being delivered to the public.

Exxon CEO Comes Out Against Fracking Project Because It Will Affect His Property Values

As ExxonMobil’s CEO, it’s Rex Tillerson’s job to promote the hydraulic fracturing enabling the recent oil and gas boom, and fight regulatory oversight. The oil company is the biggest natural gas producer in the U.S., relying on the controversial drilling technology to extract it.
The exception is when Tillerson’s $5 million property value might be harmed. Tillerson has joined a lawsuit that cites fracking’s consequences in order to block the construction of a 160-foot water tower next to his and his wife’s Texas home.

If Putin does intervene, then that’s pretty much the end of democracy in Ukraine. With the amount of blood on that man’s hands, there’s no way he’d ever be reelected. And the Rada that is turning on him sure as hell would not go along with efforts to further strengthen his regime.

There is no data on the report linked as to how many women were taking contraception—broken down by racial groups. Pregnancy termination is an INDIVIDUAL CHOICE in the USA and ethnic cleansing is a STATE ACTION —the report does give any data relating to the reasons the women chose to terminate. The Ukrainian military needs to bluntly say “Any attempt to invade Ukraine or otherwise interfere in its territory on the part of the Russians will be met with maximum force by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”

Then (if I were in charge of the EU and NATO), I’d say the same thing. Publicly. And I’d put NATO on alert, publicly, and tell Putin to back off.

But then again, I confess to being somewhat hardcore about things.

If he truly still is in Kharkiv, then he’s pretty much surrounded with few remaining allies. Most of the rats have already begun to flee the sinking ship and those that remain are either busy looking out for themselves or are trying to convince the revolutionaries that they were never on his side to begin with.

“Very difficult”? That’s an understatement. Vlad’s got no real choice, rolling in the tanks is pretty much no longer an option. The blood shed necessary to put Yanuk back after the Rada just voted to impeach him would be horrendous. And any steps taken to keep Yanuk in power now would be to the detriment of democracy in Ukraine.

I’m personally curious as to how the Putin fan club are gonna take this. How can such a powerful and charismatic leader have had his puppet removed from office in such a fashion?

Dkos rec list finally acknowledges developments in Venezuela
Venezuela: A Serious Threat to The Int’l Neo-Liberal Cartel Hegemony

There is a reason why the socialist government of Venezuela is (and has been) in the crosshairs of the international neo-liberal cartel. What Chavismo has been able to accomplish in Venezuela if allowed to stand, it would represent one of the most serious ideological challenges to the U.S.-led international Neo-liberal agenda.

That is why the U.S. is currently engaged in a clandestine destabilization campaign against the Venezuelan government, in collaboration with Venezuelan oligarchs and right wing extremists. And that also explains the almost-comical (but not funny) massive propaganda campaign we’re being subjected to here in the U.S., when it comes to the current situation in Venezuela.

re: #245 NJDhockeyfan

How is that related to theft? It is not even close to how Yanukovich paid for his property and who knows how much he has in the bank.

It’s related to theft when property(ies) of individuals are seized by “eminent domain” or damaged without recourse to those responsible, through the State for projects like the Keystone pipeline (or for mines, etc) from which those like the Kochs are able to profit.

In the case of the Waltons, the same philosophy can also be applied, when they move into areas and buy up land cheaply, get concessions from local govts on taxes, infrastructure, etc, and close down local businesses because of their ability to buy in volume cheaply (esp from overseas).

I know in the State of NC, hundreds of millions have been handed over to companies in tax relief, providing of infrastructure (such as utilities lines) on the promises that hundreds of jobs will be provided. Apple did something very similar not too far from me, with its 2”energy farms” for its data center which cover many acres of land and employs about 50 people, total at this point, in an area that has very high unemployment.

Theft is an elusive word. It can have many methods behind it. Some of it can even be determined by others to be legal.

Are credit cards with 20% rates theft or legal? Is selling substandard crappy products for high profit theft or legit? Are producing goods knowing you are ignoring environmental standards so you can get more profit theft or legal? Is backroom betting on risky mortgages by big bankers or fudging reports for a better IPO of stock theft or legit?

I know how the world works, It is not all on the up and up no matter what country, political spectrum or ‘ism’ is practiced.

I think I would be outraged if I visited the Vatican and got to tour through their holdings too.

Add Buckingham Palace, the halls (and offices) of congress, Élysée Palace,,, ect ect ect ,,,,

You pretty much can. Most of the precioussses there are in public museum mode. (Watch the Vatican espresso shop, though—only place in Italy I was ripped off for a cappuccino.)

By ‘them’, I assume he means the former regime. This is a good sign, because this is the way such things must be handled. As tempting as the idea of “revolutionary justice” may be, that temptation has to be scrupulously avoided.

Agreed. I’ve seen some talk from “serious” people that there might be ethnic/regional tension between east and west Ukraine and Russia may intervene to hold the east. It still seems very unlikely to me.

Situation in Venezuela

Press Statement
John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
February 21, 2014

I am watching with increasing concern the situation in Venezuela. Despite calls from that country’s democratic opposition and the international community, the Venezuelan government has confronted peaceful protestors with force and in some cases with armed vigilantes claiming to support the government. It has imprisoned students and a key opposition figure. It has limited the freedoms of expression and assembly necessary for legitimate political debate, and just today tightened restrictions on the media, revoking the credentials of CNN en Español reporters. This is not how democracies behave.

Every government has a duty to maintain public order, and all sides, including the opposition protestors, must refrain from violence. The government’s use of force and judicial intimidation against citizens and political figures, who are exercising a legitimate right to protest, is unacceptable and will only increase the likelihood of violence.

I call on the Venezuelan government to step back from its efforts to stifle dissent through force and respect basic human rights. The government should release incarcerated members of the opposition and initiate a process of genuine dialogue with the democratic opposition. The solution to Venezuela’s problems can only be found through dialogue with all Venezuelans, engaging in a free exchange of opinions in a climate of mutual respect.

358 Gus  Sat, Feb 22, 2014 9:46:12am
AMY GOODMAN: Let’s go to President Obama. He’s in Mexico for the big Mexico-Canada-U.S. summit talking about Ukraine.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: With regard to Ukraine, along with our European partners, we will continue to engage all sides. And we continue to stress to President Yanukovych and the Ukrainian government that they have the primary responsibility to prevent the kind of terrible violence that we’ve seen, to withdraw riot police, to work with the opposition to restore security and human dignity, and move the country forward. And this includes progress towards a multi-party, technical government that can work with the international community on a support package and adopt reforms necessary for free and fair elections next year. Ukrainians are a proud and resilient people who have overcome extraordinary challenges in their history, and that’s a pride and strength that I hope they draw on now.

AMY GOODMAN: That’s President Obama in Mexico, Professor Cohen.

STEPHEN COHEN: What are you asking me to comment on?

AMY GOODMAN: Your response to his response.

STEPHEN COHEN: To what he just said? Shame. Shame. He is saying that the responsibility for restoring peace is on the Ukrainian government, and it should withdraw its security forces from the streets. But let me ask you, if in Washington people throwing Molotov cocktails are marching on Congress—and these people are headed for the Ukrainian Congress—if these people have barricaded entrance to the White House and are throwing rocks at the White House security guard, would President Obama withdraw his security forces? This is—this is—and do you know what this does? And let’s escape partisanship here. I mean, lives are at stake. This incites, these kinds of statement that Obama made. It rationalizes what the killers in the streets are doing. It gives them Western license, because he’s not saying to the people in the streets, “Stop this, stop shooting policemen, stop attacking government buildings, sit down and talk.” And the guy you had on just before, a so-called moderate leader, what did he just tell you? “We have lost control of the situation.” That’s what I just told you. He just confirmed that.

So what Obama needs to say is, “We deplore what the people in the streets are doing when they attack the police, the law enforcement official. And we also don’t like the people who are writing on buildings ‘Jews live here,’” because these forces, these quasi-fascist forces—let’s address this issue, because the last time I was on your broadcast, you found some guy somewhere who said there was none of this there. All right. What percent are the quasi-fascists of the opposition? Let’s say they’re 5 percent. I think they’re more, but let’s give them the break, 5 percent. But we know from history that when the moderates lose control of the situation, they don’t know what to do. The country descends in chaos. Five percent of a population that’s tough, resolute, ruthless, armed, well funded, and knows what it wants, can make history. We’ve seen it through Europe. We’ve seen it through Asia. This is reality. And where Washington and Brussels are on this issue, they won’t step up and take the responsibility.

No “chaos” in Ukraine. The protestors won—everything so far, so let them sort it out in Parliament. Time will tell if real democracy flourishes in Ukraine, but this is a new beginning.

Cohen gets it entirely backwards since he appears to be a shill for Russia and the Iron Hand of Authoritarianism.
