A Great YouTube Find: Keith Jarrett’s European Quartet Live at NDR Jazz Workshop

Some of the greatest piano quartet music ever made
Music • Views: 19,987

YouTube

Wow, what a find on YouTube — a complete, high quality live performance of Keith Jarrett’s “European quartet” with Jan Garbarek (sax), Palle Danielsson (double bass), and Jon Christensen (drums), recorded in Hannover, Germany in 1974. I’ve seen pieces of this, but never the whole thing.

This is Keith in a pretty experimental phase, but not to the point of cacophony like some other free jazz experiments of the time. The intricacy of Jarrett’s compositions is counter-balanced by a shifting, sliding sense of time and phrasing that was one of this band’s unique signatures.

02 - Spiral Dance 5:01
03 - Blossom 19:01
04 - The Windup 34:56 (fade out)

Recorded in Hannover, April 18, 1974, 100th NDR Jazz Workshop, Funkhaus Hannover, Germany

Communists aren’t supposed to have a good time. After a wild outbreak of liberal screwing around, the Soviets went puritan in less than a generation.

I would love to know how deep the relationship goes. I doubt WikiLeaks, Anon and Greenwald are all wholly owned by the Kremlin but there is a relationship. Probably some financial and logistical support. I’d love to know the details.

My son is getting to the point where he recognizes and misses “Papaw” and “Mimi” - his names for my folks. When I dialed them up on Skype a few minutes ago, he was practically doing backflips. So adorable. Too bad all this nasty winter weather has kept them from visiting since Christmas.

Yes, it doesn’t matter what ideology rules—there are always going to be those who consider themselves above everyone else. It’s their kind of thinking that cream rises to the top. And they’re always the “cream”, in their own fevered minds. They always make sure of it. How much talent and intellligence gets overlooked and wasted simply because some won’t use the kinds of tactics others have no compunction using?

Why does it not surprise me that Stone’s taste in interior design sucks as much as his choice in “friends”?

Hahaha!

Interior designer Geoffrey Bradfield is a man with an impressive Rolodex. Take clients like the Koch Brothers, for whom he collaborated in designing their Wichita, Kansas, headquarters, as well as a private residence. Or Jack Resnick & Sons, the mammoth Manhattan developer who commissioned Bradfield for all of its New York lobbies. Oliver Stone’s luxurious apartment on the Hudson was a recent project of Bradfield’s. And the high-profile Kips Bay Show House in 2008 included one of Bradfield’s indelible designs. New American Luxury had the chance to talk with Bradfield about what it’s like to design for the high-end market in New York City.

Oliver Stone: Why I am selling my Chinese art

UPDATE: Sale went well. Stone grossed about US$4.4 million
….
Why he is now selling his Chinese art
You need to keep light on your feet and keep moving. Stone has had the pieces for 15 years, including one of them - a portrait of two parents and a child - that was in his dining room looking at all guests. The other, a nude of a woman swimming that recalls Chairman Mao’s adoration for swimming, had to be covered by a bamboo screen when his children visited his home (His ex-wife insisted it was too sexual.)

Celebrating Mao’s love of swimming sure is profitable.

I usually try to separate an artists politics and his work. But I just couldn’t get much interest in seeing Wolf of Wall Street. Does anyone seriously think bankers are drug crazed sex maniacs? I have no love for Wall Street bankers but the propaganda is over the top. If he depicted any other group like that there would have been much outrage.

I feel it’s a safe bet she has no interest in criticizing Oliver Stone’s politics. Unless he becomes a Republican or somehow threatens Comcasts financial interest, you won’t hear about it on MSNBC.

James Belfort has been quoted as saying that the stuff in the film was consistent with what he wrote about in his memoirs - which is what the movie is based on.

LOL.

Reminds me of a quote by General Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord:

I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent — their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy — they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent — he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.

In my experience with groups of people, I’ve found that saying to be generally accurate.

That’s a damned good question.

I don’t know if you’ve ever read about General Hammerstein, but this is his bio: en.wikipedia.org

The money quote in there is when he advised Hitler against a coup in 1932, promising Hitler that “…he would (personally) give the order to shoot (Hitler).”

That’s some serious cojones.

You can say that again.

I was just googling around to try to find out if Rachel Maddow ever expressed any specific support for or criticism of Oliver Stone since KT intimated that she’d probably be averse to criticizing him.

Apart from interviewing him about his movie “W” back in 2008, the most recent thing I could find was a 10-minute clip from 5 years ago where she appeared on Maher’s show with him. Stone ranted & railed about the U.S., AIPAC, Israel, the Gaza flotilla, etc.

Maher disagreed with him on some stuff, yet Maddow didn’t utter a peep in Stone’s defense—as a matter of fact, she had a look of mild distaste on her face the few times they panned over to her. Imagine my surprise. //

If you Lizards out there in the intertubes have a desk to flip, now would be a good time to limber up and get ready. Take a gander at what the Ugandan Minister for Ethics & Integrity had to say:

The Right Reverend Father Simon Lokodo, the current State Minister for Ethics & Integrity in Uganda, claims men raping girls is natural, and seems to imply heterosexual rape is morally preferable to consensual homosexual activity.

Father Lokodo claims to have several degrees in theology, and apparently considers himself to be a good Christian man defending his country from the imaginary scourge of homosexuality.

A degree in theology? From where? The Church of Satan? Scratch that….even Satanists wouldn’t suggest that kind of bullshit.
