Photo of the Day: Fantasies of a Ukrainian Prosecutor General

Yanukovych wasn’t the only wildly corrupt official
World • Views: 17,203

Our photo of the day comes from a Ukrainian website with tons of pictures from the extravagant mansion of former Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka: Блог Євгена Чубука : Скарби Пшонки - фоторепортаж з будинку кривавого генпрокурора.

Yes, that’s Pshonka in the framed picture.

UPDATE at 2/23/14 5:53:49 pm

Here’s a video walk-through of Pshonka’s digs, proving once again that all the money in the world can’t buy good taste.

By gold all good faith has been banished; by gold our rights are abused; the law itself is influenced by gold, and soon there will be an end of every modest restraint.”

Are Slavic people just unbelievably kitchy by nature? Every time I see some mansion walkthrough of a Russian oligarch, it’s like walking through a warehouse of crap from the QVC for the Filthy Rich.

When I moved into my ex-wife’s apartment oh so many years ago, I was struck by the staggering volume of kitch. She’s Czech, by the way. In any event, I’ve discovered in my 13 years here in the Czech Republic that kitchyness is sort of a norm here. Naturally, wealthy people can afford a lot of kitch, most of it so ostentatious as to be outright bizarre and tasteless. Czechs love their little knick-knacks. I’ve seen it in Slovakia and Poland as well.

The striking thing to me about all this oligarch kitsch is how cliche it is. Is there a style guide for aspiring autocrats or something?

Why is Conyers still hanging out with this douche?
Farrakhan: African Americans deserve their own courts

With Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., and Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones sitting behind him, Farrakhan spoke for nearly three hours, reiterating the Nation of Islam’s view that the U.S. is a land headed for destruction because it has disobeyed the word of God.

Farrakhan suggested that African Americans rely on the Quran and Bible to help set up their own legal system that would be more fair to African Americans.
….
Farrakhan railed against Christian pastors who endorse gay marriage, which he said contradicts the teachings of Christianity and Islam.

“God has never sanctioned that kind of behavior,” Farrakhan said.

Farrakhan asks President Obama to open up Area 51 to end UFO secrecy

Farrakhan says in ‘good company’ with Henry Ford

Well, for black people Henry Ford was good news. He hired black people for the same positions as white people and paid them the same wages. He cared about results, not skin color.

For Jews, Ford was a net minus in most ways, as he was bigoted against them and spread anti-Semitic propaganda, helping to plant perennial seeds of hate. He also looked favorably at Hitler during the 1930’s. The only redeeming factor is a large one, as Henry Ford did resume his company’s helm at the onset of World War II. Ford Motor Co’s vast production of trucks, engines, and other war material played an important role in ending the Third Reich, but that only offsets so much. Henry Ford still did Jews a good deal more harm than good.

re: #25 Dark_Falcon

More than a few rumors that he was told, essentially, “shut up & build lots of trucks or the government will own a car company.” He was, at best, a very mixed bag.

Don’t forget Ford’s German branch and that he set up a a line in the Soviet Union for building Model A’s that the NKVD was quite fond of driving.

Wow, total knick-knack (what we call it in the south) overload. I like a few well-placed decorative table pieces (never porcelain and never gilded!) but only if they have some value as unique and fit in, not just having them for the sake of having them. Every one was handpicked over the years and is strategically placed with some thought. And all that gold on everything is just awful—it’s on everything, furniture, curtains, walls, everything.

It looks like a gilded flea market on steroids. Talk about a place that needs some feng shui…

Still, he did apply his considerable talents to production with a great deal of success. The Ford GAA engine was the favored M4 Sherman engine of the US army (as the M4A3), though producing enough of them took time (not mostly Ford’s fault, since aircraft engine production had priority). And even the Soviet Ford line did play its role in helping the Red Army beat back the Nazis.

A mixed bag to be sure, but an interesting one.

Some interesting details in this one
As His Fortunes Fell in Ukraine, a President Clung to Illusions

Mr. Yanukovych, for his part, had begun discussions with the European mediators. According to Mr. Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister, the president was digging in his heels, telling the French, German and Polish diplomats that he was not to blame for the crisis and refusing even to consider setting a date for an early election.

Mr. Sikorski said he told Mr. Yanukovych that the only way to sell a deal to the opposition was to specify when a new presidential election would be held. “You need to declare on what date you’ll resign,” he said he told the president.

Mr. Yanukovych “went white,” Mr. Sikorski said. But the deadlock lifted after the Ukrainian leader received a phone call shortly afterward from President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. “He came back, he was agreeing to limit his time in office,” Mr. Sikorski said. “That made everything possible.”

He was prepared to stay in his house until he noticed all his guards left….

By late Friday afternoon, Mr. Yanukovych’s time had run out. Between the signing ceremony for the peace deal, held at the vast, colonnaded building that houses Ukraine’s presidential administration, and his break for Olympic cheerleading, the president’s prospects had taken a dramatic turn for the worse: Hundreds of riot police officers guarding the presidential compound and nearby government buildings had vanished.

“It was astonishing,” said Mr. Sikorski, who, while leaving the presidential building, watched in dismay as the police officers jumped into buses and drove off. “That was not part of the deal. Astonishing.”

There was this company called Home Interiors (I think it’s still around… yep) and they sold the most god-awful stuff. Plastic painted to look gilded, y’know? Anyway, they’d have parties similar to Tupperware parties and grandma & the other ladies just adored that stuff. *gag, shudder*

A protest by rich people that does not merit calling in the WAAAMbulance:

‘Don’t let a child ruin what we have worked for!’ Wealthy neighbors plan PROTEST to stop Justin Bieber moving into $11million mansion in their quiet Atlanta suburb

It seems some wealthy Atlantans aren’t keen on the prospect of a drag-racing, egg-throwing Canadian teenager for a neighbor.

Residents of the well-to-do Buckhead neighborhood are planning to stage a protest outside the Blackland Road property the pop star has his eye on.

Given Bieber’s prior egg-throwing antics at his Calabasas residence, which are now under investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, the residents’ wariness is understandable.

The event is set for Monday and so far 136 people have committed to the 6am event.

‘As a community here in Buckhead, we have worked hard to achieve our goals and get to where we are. Justin Bieber’s relocation to Atlanta can be nothing but bad for our children, as well as the community,’ reads a statement on the Facebook page.

‘Some can’t even let their children play in the driveway without fear; he has raced vehicles under the influence before. What’s to say he won’t do it again?’

BTW, since I’ve been collecting links all weekend, here’s one for you—a serious. factual security study on “Black Widows” & other types of female suicide bombers. It’s a bit out of date (2009), but still interesting & relevant, IMO:

What’s Special about Female Suicide Terrorism? (PDF)

This study analyzes the interaction between the motivations of individual attackers and terrorist group strategies. To do so, I combine a quantitative analysis of all known suicide terrorist attacks between 1981 and July 2008 with a strategic account of why terrorist organizations employ female suicide terrorism (FST) and case studies of individual female attackers. I advance five central claims. First, I reveal the superior effectiveness of FST from the perspective of the groups that employ women. Second, I explain that terrorist groups increasingly enlist women as suicide attackers because of their higher effectiveness. Third, I demonstrate that terrorist groups adapt their discourse, catering to the specific individual motives of potential female suicide attackers in order to recruit them. Fourth, I show that female attackers are driven by the same general motives and circumstances that drive men. Furthermore, and in contrast to the existing literature, women attackers uphold, rather than eschew, their societies’ norms for gender behavior. Attempts to transform these societies into gender-neutral polities are therefore destined to increase FST. Finally, I conclude that, unless target states adapt their defensive strategies, we should expect an increase in FST.

And with that, I’m outta here. Later, lizards.

More to the point “ruin what we’ve worked for” is a snooty, entitled, fuckfaced argument. Even if all these rich people worked for everything they own that doesn’t give them the right to control who lives next to them. Your neighbors aren’t always going to be awesome people, you do your best to get along until the law gets broken and the cops need to be called. Unless they’re a convicted child rapist or something picketing them before they move in is a pure dick move.

Fiddler on the Roof’s art director made Chagall kitsch.

The guy even had gold-plated magazine claps, used to hold two AK mags together to speed reloading. Unlike the late and unlamented Uday Hussein, ‘Shorty’s guns appeared to have been unfired.

in fairness, uday only fired his when the Iraqi national soccer team lost a match. The good news was there was quite a bit of rotation up from the junior clubs.

O/T

Watched the 2009 Wonder Woman animated movie last night; pretty spiffy.

Keri Russell as Diana, Nathan Fillion as Steve Trevor, Alfred Molina as Ares, and Virginia Madsen as Hippolyta.

Interesting note: people and monster were killed. About the only “superheroes” I sort of support in murderizing people are Wonder Woman, Captain America, and maybe Aquaman.

Try The Flashpoint Paradox. You’ll get to see Wonder Woman and Aquaman murder a lot of people, including Lex Luthor, Deathstroke, Lois Lane and Billy Barton.

How many times in history has this happened? Dictator/strongman leader looks out the window, “hey, where did the guards go?”…..”oh shit”

They should call that “the Praetorian Guard Rag.”

Speaking of “wealth”, who wants some weapons-grade stupid I had to wade through on another forum?

Why would you think the poor would die? With little taxes and no government intervention, prices on everything should drop significantly. They should be able to live pretty well on their salaries.

And no, it’s not a Poe. The person really meant it.

Not many of us Black Americans pay a lot of attention to Louis Farrakhan because he’s a gasbag like many of the Christian ministers. Why Conyers is hanging out with him is anybody’s guess. I only know that I couldn’t do it because creatures like Farrakhan and the Christians who preach divisiveness and urge their members to hate others get on my last damn nerve. I don’t need them to tell me how to live my life, and I get offended when they try.

Farrakan doesn’t mean shit to the majority of Americans. KT just likes to find a way to stir up the thread with old, racist triggers.

Asshole troll.

re: #92 steve_davis

in fairness, uday only fired his when the Iraqi national soccer team lost a match. The good news was there was quite a bit of rotation up from the junior clubs.

Uday practiced with an AK a good bit, although not the gold-plated one.

But the gold-plated AK was used by him one other time, and that was when it fired most of the rounds it has fired. For that was the day in 2003 the 101st Airborne and Delta Force found Uday and Qusay Hussein and tried to arrest them. The sons of Saddam repulsed the arrest attempt (the apartment they had holed up in could only be approached by 1 narrow staircase) and then shooting at the encircling Americans for a couple hours before finally being blown away by 3 TOW ATGMs.

Uday’s gold-plated AKM survived the firefight, The wooden handguard was notably scorched from contact with the hot barrel, and the finish had some notable wear, but the rifle was still fully functional. But the AK was designed from the first to be a durable rifle, so that isn’t much of a surprise.

There’s also a single group of protesters who appointed themselves guards.

Small group dynamics keep the guards from looting, respect for the men with sticks probably helps everyone else.

Perhaps not so much small group dynamics as idealism? When the protesters arrived they immediately set to looking for documents, and going through them. This is a revolutionary movement that didn’t loot—why start now?

There is a video by the women’s brigade up on YouTube, a guided tour through the palace. The woman taking us through tells us how much things cost (the receipts were among the documents they found), and what that money could have gone for (e.g. each gilded chair an extra 1000 UAH each for 400 pensioners). She also shows us empty boxes, guessing at what was in them, and boxes with stuff in them (a solid gold pen). They were documenting everything before letting in the crowds. She also points out a half eaten meal on the dining room table (Yanukovych left in a hurry) and the huge number of bathrooms.

Interesting news today—Mrs. Yanukovych visited the mansion today for the first time. She had never been there before, as apparently Yanukovych had lived there with his much younger GF.
