Buzzfeed: Al Jazeera Offered Julian Assange $1.3M for Diplomatic Cables

Corruption among the anarchists
Media • Views: 20,083

Today we learn (via Buzzfeed’s Rosie Gray) that Qatari news network Al Jazeera offered Julian Assange more than a million dollars for access to the diplomatic cables Wikileaks acquired in 2010.

And that’s not all; they also offered sexual favors.

In “Ghosted,” a story by Andrew O’Hagan in the London Review of Books about his experience ghostwriting an autobiography of Assange that was never published, he alleges that Al Jazeera offered Assange $1.3 million in exchange for WikiLeaks data.

“That night, a guy from al-Jazeera was talking to the group,” O’Hagan wrote of a night in January 2011. “The group was usually just Sarah, who lived there, and Joseph Farrell, a pleasant twenty-something whizz kid who came and went. Another guy, an activist and academic from Canberra University, was drinking wine and talking about how to mobilise the world. It turned out that the guy from al-Jazeera was hoping to strike a deal with WikiLeaks - that’s to say, with Julian. He was offering $1.3 million to get access (via encryption keys) to the data. He also wanted to organise a conference in Qatar on press freedom.”

According to James Ball, a former WikiLeaks employee, another meeting with Al Jazeera executives took place in December 2010 in the office of Mark Stephens, then Assange’s lawyer. Ball and WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson represented Assange’s side, while two high-level Al Jazeera employees, one described as the “third-in-charge” and one introduced as the head of investigations, represented Al Jazeera, according to Ball.

[…]

According to Ball, the Al Jazeera executives offered to fly the pair to Doha and “make us comfortable.” They offered other things too: “I remember a remark along the lines of noting the women there were very lovely, and very friendly,” Ball said.

At the end, one of the executives asked the men, “What would it take to make you happy?” Ball said.

Just another example of how this libertarian/anarchist ideology corrupts everything it touches.

Why sell if off when he can selectively release it and thus embarrass the US and her allies for his master’s benefit?

“Sexual favors?” Makes me more convinced than ever that this entitled dickwad did what those women in Sweden are alleging.

I wonder how long it will take the Ecuadoran foreign ministry to wise up to this scam? Assange has been essentially imprisoned in the Ecuadoran Embassy in London (a second story office suite) since June 19th 2012. The pop-left regime in Ecuador would probably like to emulate Venezuela and Cuba, but they don’t have the power to suppress the opposition as effectively. That opposition is bound to use Assange against the government in every way possible. When, and if, the government decides they’ve had enough, Assange is likely to find himself defenestrated (thrown out the window) right into the waiting arms of Scotland Yard.

Pay to play.

AJ was looking to get into the ballgame, and gave an offer, which Wikileaks/Assange didn’t want. It makes you wonder just what kind of monetary offer would have been accepted.

It also sheds light on how AJ operates and how we need to be wary about the sources overseas where the rules are quite different.

It also sheds light on Assange and Wikileaks in that they were apparently shopping their ill-gotten gains to the highest bidder.

Don’t think for a moment that Greenwald wasn’t paying attention. They’ve decided that it’s better to release stuff in drips and drabs since they can spill ink by the kilo-word while retaining absolute control over the documents to spin them furiously against the US and its interests.

Heard some woman on NPR from ProPublica (who reports on “security” issues) talking about airport security and how she (aside from being so fucking paranoid about “privacy issues”) would rather be pat down than go through a scan where a picture of her skeleton would be stored somewhere “forever”, according to her. Having someone’s hands all over me isn’t my idea of fun, though, so that can work 2 ways.

I didn’t hear the first part or most of the interview as I was running errands, but she did say something else about how she had cut down on her use of teh Google and its various usages, such as search engine, gmail, etc because of “privacy issues”.

BTW, did you know that the guy who started PP and heads it up even today, Paul Steiger, was the former managing editor for The Wall St. Journal? No doubt he knows his way very well around the monied class for funding.

In the meantime, what are the chances of making the Ecuadoran Embassy a regular stop for London sightseeing tours? Tourists could get out of the bus to gawk at Assange on his balcony and throw peanuts at him.

It really says something that we hear a story like this, when the “Information deserves to be free!” douchebags are the ones sitting on piles of documents they say people deserve to see…but only in drips and drabs and only at their discretion. You’d almost think they’re nothing but a bunch of attention whores…

Liberal Fascism is an oxymoron. I find it funny that they do that but ignore that their own kind were quite sympathetic to the ideals of fascism in the 30’s. I mean if the left were so fascist, we would have evidence of leftists praising Mussolini, Hitler, and Franco. I said it downstairs but is it any wonder that the groups outside of Jews “they” came for in the famous poem by Pastor Nimholler (trade unions, social democrats, and communists) are ideologically on the left and Jews were blamed for leftism to boot.

Imagine my surprise to see this in the Pando article:

Quoting Haaretz

“Ukrainian Rabbi Moshe Reuven Azman, called on Kiev’s Jews to leave the city and even the country if possible, fearing that the city’s Jews will be victimized in the chaos, Israeli daily Maariv reported Friday.

“‘I told my congregation to leave the city center or the city all together and if possible the country too,’ Rabbi Azman told Maariv. ‘I don’t want to tempt fate,’ he added, ‘but there are constant warnings concerning intentions to attack Jewish institutions.’”

PANDO: Sounds scary in a Schindler’s List sorta way, doesn’t it? Later that day, Ha’aretz published this correction, admitting it’d been duped by a Kremlin tool:

“Correction (Feb. 22, 4:20 P.M.): An earlier version of this report incorrectly described Rabbi Azman as the chief rabbi of Ukraine. Azman is not the country’s chief rabbi, but one of two rabbis challenging the official chief rabbi, Yaakov Bleich, in Kiev, and like most Chabad rabbis, is aligned with the Kremlin.”

My son would be very surprised to learn that he is “aligned with the Kremlin” when he was asked to leave in 2009.

Also, Haaretz has removed the bolded section from its article because like WAY TO GO ENDANGERING THE LIVES OF JEWS IN THE UKRAINE YOU FUCKBAGS but Pando gleefully goes on:

(If you want to read more about Chabad, read Yasha Levine’s investigative report on the right-wing Jewish cult, and its role in Cory Booker’s rise to power.) [Link not embedded, don’t read that sickening shit]

The GOP had a chance to put a lid on this sort of Ted rhetoric in 2010 but they were afraid of getting shouted down at a Town Hall Rally by some goombah with a Gadsen flag and a tri-cornered hat.

By allowing these sort of statements to go unchalleneged, they started an attention-grabbing race to the bottom, and we are nowhere near the nadir of it.

And when we see Ted Cruz up defending Ted’s statements, we know that it is really going to spiral downwards even more rapidly, to the point that none of these people are going to be taken seriously outside the RWNJ bubble.

Probably. Would fit most of the other activities in that they attack the US and Europe at every opportunity. Ukraine opposition is definitely not pro-Russia at this point, so they would be fair game. And carrying the sort of load that the A-10 can requires pylons, which kills the stealth advantage that’s already questionable. Warthogs have come back with holes blown through wings, engines missing, and relying upon manual backups after two sets of hydraulics have failed. The pilots sit in a titanium bathtub rated to take hits from 23mm shells and keep them alive. The F-35 is a piss-poor “replacement.”

I have seen none of this. Where is MB getting his information, Moscow?

“White supremacist banners and Confederate flags were draped inside Kiev’s occupied City Hall, and demonstrators have hoisted Nazi SS and white power symbols over a toppled memorial to V.I. Lenin. After Yanukovich fled his palatial estate by helicopter, EuroMaidan protesters destroyed a memorial to Ukrainians who died battling German occupation during World War II. Sieg heil salutes and the Nazi Wolfsangel symbol have become an increasingly common site in Maidan Square, and neo-Nazi forces have established “autonomous zones” in and around Kiev.”

No doubt there are rightwing elements in this revolution, but there are plenty of democratic types—ideologies cut a wide swatch across the political spectrum.

Especially since the Palestinians didn’t particularly care much for the 2006 election of Hamas either (there was a Palestinian civil war too - complete with defenestrations and executions of captured members of the opposing forces, where Hamas threw Fatah out of Gaza, and Fatah effectively did the same to Hamas in the West Bank).

Hamas now controls Gaza, Fatah the West Bank, and the two Palestinian parties still can’t agree on forming a new government/elections to unify their position.

Civil War? Coup? Fascism? Ukraine’s Unrest Provokes Inflammatory Language

…In Britain, the far-left-wing Eurosceptic electoral alliance No2EU described protesters as an “unholy alliance of conservatives, fascists, and revanchist groups promoting a cult around former Nazi collaborators.”

On the front page of its February 21 edition, the Russian tabloid “Komsomolskaya Pravda” featured the headline: “After Capturing Ukraine, The Banderovtsi Will Aim For Russia.” Stepan Bandera was a leader of the Ukrainian nationalist movement from the early to mid-20th century, and “Banderovtsi” is often used as a derogatory term by Russians to describe Ukrainian nationalists.

In an article posted on February 7, the Bishkek-based information website gezitter.org equated Yanukovych’s future to two former Kyrgyz presidents. The headline reads: “Yanukovych equals Bakiev and Akaev combined.” Both Kurmanbek Bakiev and President Askar Akaev were ousted following antigovernment protests.

White supremacists (of which Nugent is one) are always blathering about the coming race war. If we didn’t have one in the late 60s/early 70s, we sure as hell ain’t having one now.

I hope you are right, and I understand what you are saying. But, if there is to be any race war in the future, it will be a bunch of white supremacists that will start it and want it carried out. Before their fear was ‘the blacks’ were getting angry and uppity and they might want to ‘kill whitey’ and so they had to arm themselves for the coming war. Now, sometimes it seems some of them are to the point where they might just want to start some stuff so they could get a little war going to show their ‘white power’ perceived strength.

Is this the 3rd, or 4th time that the USAF has tried to dump the A-10? Close ground support isn’t glamorous enough for them, and they still don’t want the Army to get a foothold in fixed wing aviation for carrying out a necessary mission profile.

Dumping the A-10 is also pressure for adopting the F-35 since you need the strike aircraft.

Actually there’s a side-step going on the USAF is desperately trying to plug.

UCAVs.

Right now everyone gets to have them, and they’re approaching the point where they will make great A-10 replacements.

The secondary fear for the USAF is that they’re also approaching the point where they can do a lot of air superiority missions as well. And if the choice is a multi-million dollar uber-fighter or a multitude of million dollar uber-ucavs, well, quantity has a quality all its own.

Not that the Air Force will want to risk their hugely expensive, maybe-not-so-reliable hangar queens on close air support, when it comes right down to it.
