Arizona Wingnuts Chicken Out on Anti-Gay “Right to Refuse Service” Bill Due to Backlash

It’s a dry hate.
Wingnuts • Views: 25,447

Basically, they’re still for it, but the backlash is painful, so they’re against it. But it’s still a good idea. That maybe isn’t absolutely necessary. But a good thing, just don’t do it because there might be some bad results that would hurt us instead of the people we’re trying to hurt.

Three Republican senators who voted for Senate Bill 1062 say they made a bad decision in a rushed process and are now asking Gov. Jan Brewer to veto the right to refuse service bill.

“We feel it was a solution in search of a problem,” Sen. Bob Worsley, R-Mesa, said in an impromptu news conference outside the state Senate. He was joined by Sen. Steve Pierce, R-Prescott.

The two, along with Senate Majority Whip Adam Driggs, R-Phoenix, sent Brewer a letter this morning asking for a veto.

“While our sincere intent in voting for this bill was to create a shield for all citizens’ religious liberties, the bill has instead been mischaracterized by its opponents as a sword for religious intolerance,” the three wrote. “These allegations are causing our state immeasurable harm.”

Pierce and Worsley said the bill was moved along very quickly, not giving them enough time to convince fellow lawmakers to vote against it. Besides, Pierce said, they didn’t want to “tear apart” the GOP caucus, which was sharply divided last year over Brewer’s push for Medicaid expansion. [Emphasis added out of pure Schadenfreude.—ed.]

Read the rest here (there’s an auto-starting video too): 3 GOP Senators Who Voted for SB 1062 Asking Brewer to Veto Bill

Here’s a link to a .pdf of the letter signed by the three Republican Senators. I think the letter is actually more weaselly than the video statement at the link above.

Thanks again to Stanley Sea for the subtitle.

By the way, here’s an amusing article about the fight against the bill in the Arizona Senate, carried out by two Democratic Senators, Steve Gallardo and Ed Ableser.

[…]

First, Gallardo offered adding specific LGBT protections to the bill. That was voted down.

Then, Gallardo offered that any business that does want to reserve service to someone based on a religious belief should let that be known on a sign posted at the front of the business.

“There’s a reason why businesses don’t want anyone to know [they discriminate], it’s because they will go out of business — they know that,” Gallardo said. “They know that this type of discrimination would not be tolerated in Arizona.”

That was voted down.

Then Ableser introduced his series of amendments.

The pretzel logic pervades the TP/GOP. This is from Kansas, where the Tea Party is claiming wants to make sure that LGBT discrimination language is enacted to preserve their right to discriminate without fear of lawsuit.

Yeah, you read that right.

Substitute black or interracial or Chinese or any other minority group that has historically been discriminated against for LGBT. That lays clear the bigotry involved here.

The focus of this kind of legislation is to preserve the individual right to discriminate against minorities or anyone that they don’t approve of.

Actually, they were shamed into asking Jan Brewer to hide the shameful thing they did, without ever acknowledging that the thing was shameful. That last bit is what motivated the Page.

This is awesome:

For good measure, Ableser offered one more amendment: People shouldn’t be able to make an exercise-of-religion claim based on Satanism.

Ableser cited one of the “Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth,” which states, “If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy.”

Under Yarbrough’s bill, a Satanist business owner could defend himself in a lawsuit by saying his religious beliefs dictated that he must have treated someone cruelly and without mercy for being an annoyance.

Like the rest of the amendments, that one was voted down too.

EPIC LEGISLATIVE TROLLING! FLAWLESS VICTORY!

Reminds me of when the VA legislature was looking to pass the transvaginal probing bill back in ‘11, hoping to get it all said and done before word got to the press. How McDonnell waffled and made up excuses for why he wouldn’t take a clear position on the bill before the crush of national ridicule led him to saying he wouldn’t sign the bill.

It’s a sad fucking state of affairs in this nation when stupid bills like these have to depend on national ridicule to be killed.

And, I don’t expect to be in the room or will I do anything to prevent you from obtaining a contraceptive. Point of order:

Point 1: Chernobyl is in the Ukraine. Not Russia. Huge difference. The cost to contain the ongoing damage from Chernobyl’s destroyed reactor is on the Ukrainian government, and they’re trying to build a new containment facility to keep the surrounding environment from being further damaged should the original sarcophagus fail.

Point 2:

Russia is most certainly flaming. The Olympic closing/opening ceremonies show that the Russians are indeed as fabulous and gay as the rest of the world. They just have an odd way of showing it. /

There’s always a home team bounce.

But Buzzfeed Gawker noted one curious thing:

Vic Wild competed for Russia. He won 2 gold medals. He was born, raised, and lives in Washington state. He got married to a Russian athlete and decided to compete for Russia because the US didn’t want to give his particular discipline sufficient funding/coaching. He went where the money was.

The medal count irony. Had the US given Wild the funding/backing he thought he needed, the US would have been the overall medal leader, and would have had 29 medals total, versus 27 for Russia. What we got? 29 medals for Russia, 27 for the US.

Maybe I’m too young to appreciate Cold War satires, but I never really liked “Stripes”. Of course, Ramis also gave us “Ghostbusters” and “Animal House”, which are two of the most hilarious movies ever made.

I’m so glad I’ve already visited the Grand Canyon. I really don’t want to spend a single cent in tourism dollars in that state until these clowns are all voted out of office.

It’s a hard slog for a number of reasons….

1) the State lege has already made the gerrymandering of certain districts a fait accompli although the newly created board for impartially drawn districts is finally making some headway (after the Governor attempted to impeach the leader of the Board for doing their job)

2) fear sells in Az, you have a lot of old white folks here (we import them dontchaknow) that get told that while life here is lovely, there’s those illegals looking to steal their golf carts, camp out in their backyards, sleep on their golf courses and the only way to prevent that is to keep voting Republican

3) Az has elected a majority of D congress people, the lack of quality candidates makes the Senate and the Gov chair a possibility and there is a fair amount of grass roots organizing going on to get folks registered both inside the cities and out on the reservations to try and stem the tide of know-nothing xenophobic asshats in the lege, but its a hard slog.

(CNN) — Harold Ramis, the actor, writer and director whose films include “Stripes,” “Ghostbusters,” “Groundhog Day” and “Analyze This,” has died. He was 69.

His death was caused by complications related to autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, a condition Ramis battled for four years, according to United Talent Agency, which represented Ramis for many years.

Note the way in which they framed this. They didn’t say it was a bad bill. They said it was a bill that was “mischaractized” in a way that was “doing immeasurable harm to the state”.

It’s the state congressional version of the classic “I’m sorry you misinterpreted what I said” non-apology. They’re not asking for a veto because, after careful reconsideration, they realized it was a bad vote in the first place. They’re asking for a veto because, in their minds, the (supposedly-unwarranted) backlash is worse for the state than letting teh gayz be served the same as everyone else.

They’re still scumbags. They’re just scumbags that realize when the writing is on the wall.

The explicitly religiously-motivated bills we see bubbling up in state legislatures is a sign that some fraction of the masses are getting quite uncomfortable with the reality that their worldview is out of date.

Which leads me to the following links, which demonstrate how worldviews lead to assumptions that get reapplied all the time, without the critical analysis which is needed to sort fact from fiction:

Document of Early Christian History Rediscovered in Iowa

which summarizes this local newspaper story:

Ancient Egyptian papyri discovered at Luther College
Rare early Christian document among the finds

Reading the article details there is one little problem - the papyri described are in no way “Christian”, like the headlines declare.

One, the “libellus”, is a pagan document for a Roman civil religious requirement. The others are “accounting” documents.

The headline writers are just using “Christian” as a synonym for “Roman 1st to 5th century”. The proper description of these papyri would be “late antiquity Roman”, not “Christian”.

The problem is that our popular culture does not view the world outside our bubble as being anything that doesn’t fit our preconceived notions.

This continually comes up in all these culture-war discussions - the human proclivity to think the world exists exactly as only one’s own mind already believes it has to exist.

It’s a universal human problem, and is why formal methods in science have come about, by hard work, in an attempt to assert that there exists a world in physical reality that exists apart from one’s own consciousness and perceptions.

Morgan needs to realize that it isn’t necessarily political views that will shorten an interviewer / host’s longevity, but much more often their personality.

A few examples of successful interviewers, from various points on the political spectrum:

Larry King (the guy Morgan replaced on CNN when he retired)
Barbara Walters
David Frost
Phil Donahue
Howard K Smith

Each and every one of these was not afraid of asking tough questions, however they all had the greatest of respect from their interviewees as well as the general public.

During the Jim Crow era in Texas, it was legal to discriminate but not mandatory in many types of business. Many retail stores and other establishments had “whites only” signs. In response, several non-discriminating stores here in Lubbock put up signs that said “All of God’s children welcome here.”

During the Jim Crow era in St Augustine, FL, a mob burned down a friend’s father’s restaurant, because he was serving meals out the back door to non-whites.

Don’t miss those days.

Too bad they didn’t get Brewer’s signature before learning that. With Michael Sam about to join the NFL, it would have been a no-brainer for the NFL to move the Superbowl to another state.

With the AZ Super Bowl set for Feb 1, 2015, there’s not enough time to move the event.

As related by the Tzarina of Tokyo, translated by the Empress of the Americas.

Porthos*: This sash was a gift to me, from the Queen of America.

*Oliver Platt as Porthos, one of the few rays of light in Disney’s Three Musketeers, along with Keifer Sutherland as Athos and Charlie Sheen as Athos.

I’m so glad I’ve already visited the Grand Canyon. I really don’t want to spend a single cent in tourism dollars in that state until these clowns are all voted out of office.

I’m curious about the effects on Arizona businesses, and I’m especially curious about Phoenix’s Sky Harbor airport, which is a major hub. What happens if a gay couple requires emergency medical care, or emergency law enforcement assistance, in Sky Harbor airport? I can see Americans avoiding flight connections in that airport. I can also see Americans avoiding business trips to Phoenix / Scottsdale.

They could come to Iowa! Wait, that wouldn’t work. We don’t have a professional football team. ‘Cause then Minnesota would want one. (Insert rimshot here.)
