Blind Man Acquitted in Fatal Shooting Gets Guns Back

His aim is getting better.

A legally blind man who was acquitted in the shooting death of another man fought in court Thursday to get his guns back.

John Rogers said he has the right to have both of his guns returned to him. While Judge John Galluzzo said he did not want to return the guns to Rogers, he said it was the law.

Rogers’ guns were confiscated by law-enforcement officers after he fatally shot a man. He was later acquitted.

“I have to return property that was taken under the circumstance,” Galluzzo said. “I have researched and haven’t found case law to say otherwise.”

Galluzzo said he had no choice but to return Rogers’ 10mm Glock and a rifle that was used to kill James DeWitt, 34.

The shooting happened at Rogers’ home in Geneva during a fight in March 2012. Rogers spent time in jail and went to trial in January. He was granted immunity using the “stand your ground” law.

Also:

Four years ago, Rogers was accused of shooting at his cousin.

Don’t think of it as a blind shooter with two guns. Think of it as public-access Russian roulette.

Rogers has a history of violence. Four years ago, he fired 15 rounds from a handgun at Michael Rogers, his roommate and cousin, following a night of drinking and fighting in Geneva, according to court records.

Michael Rogers suffered scrapes but no gunshot wounds. The defendant was charged with aggravated assault but, in a deal with prosecutors, pleaded no contest to a lesser charge — unlawfully displaying a firearm — and was placed on probation.

That was revoked, however, when he pushed and punched a woman a year later, something that resulted in him spending 71 days in the Seminole County jail for domestic violence, according to court records.

Rogers shot DeWitt once in the chest with a .308 Remington assault rifle from a distance of 18 inches or less, defense attorneys said.

Translation does not imply errors and dishonesty, done right it is simply making a book accessible to those who speak that language. It is only when dishonesty is introduced into the translation (I’m looking at you, Andy Schlafley!) that the mischief begins.

Beg to differ, DF.

Change that first bit to “Translation does not imply deliberate errors…” and okay, but even honest translations have often been known to incorporate errors.

I’m reading a translation of Apicius’ cookbook that also summarizes previous translations’ er, translation, and stuff gets pretty odd.

Ok, waded through Greenwald’s latest scoop. Here’s my understanding: the Brits developed some techniques for manipulating online communities. Not surprising since ad agencies and political “think tanks” figured that out a while ago. From an intel point of view I get the parts about infiltrating and even creating doubt using misinformation to discredit or marginalize someone. I’d love to see some real world cases where these techniques were used. I guess as long as they’re not using the techniques for political purposes (generating public support for a new government program, etc) then I don’t think it’s a big deal. “slippery slope” and potential for misuse abound but that’s life

Proto-furry.

And, just to be clear re: my furry comment, lemme quote from the Book of St. Edward of Izzard:

…If you’re a transvestite you get lumped into that “weirdo” grouping. There was a guy in the Bronx … who was living in a cave (like you do) and he was coming out and shooting at geese, and a lot of weird things going on with this guy.

And they found, in his cave, the police picked him up and they found a collection of women’s shoes, and they thought ‘Well, maybe he’s a transvestite.’

And, if he is, then he’s a fucking weirdo transvestite.

I’m much more in the Executive Transvestite area.

Like, J. Edgar Hoover, what a fuckhead he was, they found out when he died that he was a transvestite, and they go “Well that explains his weird behavior…”

Yeah, fucking weirdo transvestite.

[gestures to himself] Executive transvestite.

It’s a lot wider of a community than you’d think.

From the comments at Greenwald’s site: An OWS organizer fears his discussions of violence may have been compromised….

Craig

24 Feb 2014 at 8:59 pm

During the Occupy protests the group I was working with had a discussion on facebook about defending ourselves against police suppression, in light of the police response in Oakland. I argued that any kind of violent defense would not work to our advantage, and everyone agreed and the conversation drifted towards when it would be appropriate to respond to police violence with violence of our own, as applied to defending ourselves. Later I found that the Fusion Center run by DHS circulated a memo to the local police stations stating that they found evidence that the local Occupy group planed on shooting officers. I believe they were using the discussion we had about defending ourselves from the police to make the case that we were going to shoot cops. I believe that they were using the Fusion Centers to manipulate the police into thinking the peaceful protesters were a threat. I was stunned and scared sh**less after I found this out, since I was not an anonymous protester, but an out front organizer, I gave news interviews and was a public face. My name is directly attached to the local Occupy group, and I would have to think that the local police had my name, along with this memo, which in turn would make me a target for the police. I admit I feel victim to my own fear and have since disappeared from the group out of fear of police harassment. Manipulate the police into thinking the protesters were a threat, deceive them into thinking there is an eminent threat, and then destroy the reputations of the protesters. Sound familiar?

The Beijing government routinely has a large group of ‘net users interject pro-government comments into online discussions. Because each one gets 0.5 yuan per comment, they are called “wumaos” (wu = 5 and mao = 0.1 yuan). If you read comments at some English-language sites relating to Chinese affairs, you can sometimes pick out comments that are so over-the-top pro-Beijing that you may suspect they’re planted by wumaos.

This activity is well documented, so I am sure GG mentions the Chinese practice in his latest exposé. Right?

Well, according to Glibertarian ethos, those Chinese paid-commenters are working and getting the wage the market has determined.

Governance by money has always been the foundation of society, all the more so in the modern twitterverse of ethereal electrons.

The PRC today is about as anti-Marxist as anywhere. The raw mercantilism that has risen up to replace the “communist” Mao system is really something that I think future historians will appreciate more than many of us contemporaries.

Agreed. China now is as money-grubbing capitalistic as the USA was during the Gilded Age. And as with the American situation, the poor people are not getting as much benefit out of the new economy as the rich ones are.

O/T…

…but the funniest paragraph I’ve read today:

[Doc Magnus’] relationship with Platinum alone is something that could fill entire books with analysis of just what exactly is supposed to be going on there. If you’ve never read it, the short version is that Platinum is extremely vocal about being in love with Doc, which he always responds to by telling her that she’s a robot, not a woman, and that he’s going to give her to the science museum if she doesn’t shut up about it. It’s crazy, and the question that keeps coming up if you read these stories is why did he make a lady robot in a sexy nurse costume that’s in love with him if he’s just going to be a jerk to her? It’s like some bizarre sociopathic BDSM thing that plays out in the most literal possible manner in the pages of a superhero comic from the ’60s.

1) Treat every weapon as if it were loaded
2) Never point the weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot
3) Keep the weapon on safe until you intend to fire
4) Keep your finger off the trigger until you intend to fire

Pointing a gun at your own head and pulling the trigger to prove the weapon is safe is right out.

I was born and grew up in donetsk state, and live in Luhansk. I do not want he shadow of Yanukovych and the Party of Regions to hang over the ordinary people there. Every family has freaks. Do not cut live flesh, do not divide Ukraine. 20 years back we gave birth and raised a new generation who, thank god, do not know what the USSR and Lenin were. On them lie all our hopes, they are our future. Thanks to them, only now was it possible to have this historic breakthrough and the beginning of a new Ukraine.

That’s it, to the best of my translation. My Russian is weak, better with Ukrainian. This is a friend who lives in the farthest east city in Ukraine. And her sentiments are fairly common there. Even my first cousin in Donetsk is happy to be rid of Yanukovych.

The same judge is the one who released him on the SYG law. Was the judge swayed by Rogers” claim of blindness as well? Did he feel sympathy for his condition as a mitigating circumstance, or was it simply more SYG bullshit? The departed was an invited guest who was having a good time and didn’t want to leave, so Rogers just made him leave permanently.

“Rogers was freed from Seminole County Jails on January 9, 2014, mere hours after Circuit Judge John Galluzzo granted his “Stand Your Ground” motion.”

rawstory.com

If this guy is receiving disability benefits, he needs to be reviewed since witnesses say he can see. Back in the ’80s, I worked at a bank and we had a blind guy working in IT using special equipment. What’s Rogers’ excuse for not working for 13 yrs? If he can see well enough to kill someone, he ought to be able to do some kind of work, and therefore trainable. After all, employers make accommodations all the time for disabled workers—it’s the law, too.

He also has a history of violence, so with him, it’s just a matter of time, esp with his drinking, before he harms someone else, either by beating them up or shooting them. He’s a menace to society as it is, not a SYG hero of any sort.

If this guy has any “friends” left, that would be the real news, because he can see well enough to kill someone and obviously won’t hesitate to do it.

I don’t think FL has the guts to deny this guy a license to own guns. But if you have to get a license to own a gun, then isn’t that more of a privilege than a right? You see where the gun nuts are going with this, don’t you? They know this, and that’s why they keep beating the 2nd Amendment to death for owning weapons as a “right”.

I’ll bet FL won’t give Rogers a license to drive. Driving is considered a privilege for which you have to be licensed, too. So—why one license and not the other?

Rogers is a bully, a big ex-Marine who obviously has issues. He beat up an ex-girlfriend and has a violent past of threatening at least one person with a gun. He appears to be a danger to others more than they are to him.

“Rogers, who was blinded in a work-related accident in 2001, has an extensive history of violence. In 2010, following another night of drinking, Rogers shot at his cousin and roommate, Michael Rogers, 15 times with a handgun. Michael Rogers was not shot, and John Rogers eventually plead no contest to one count of unlawfully displaying a firearm, for which he was placed on probation.

“That probation was revoked when, in 2011, he punched a woman, which led to him spending 71 days in jail on domestic violence charges. “

A group of journalists and activists has undertaken to rescue, systematize and investigate the enormous wealth of information about the former owners of the residence.

The recovered documents are being published on this website to make them available to journalists and citizens around the world.

re: #162 Targetpractice

And now I find myself curious as to whether or not the terms of the lease for that base would allow the new Ukrainian gov’t to tell Russia to GTFO.

Before voting on accession, Ukraine demanded from Russia, the USA, France and the United Kingdom a written statement that these powers undertook to extend the security guarantees to Ukraine. Instead security assurances to Ukraine (Ukraine published the documents as guarantees given to Ukraine[5]) were given on 5 December 1994 at a formal ceremony in Budapest (known as the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances[6]), may be summarized as follows: Russia, the UK and the USA undertake to respect Ukraine’s borders in accordance with the principles of the 1975 CSCE Final Act, to abstain from the use or threat of force against Ukraine, to support Ukraine where an attempt is made to place pressure on it by economic coercion, and to bring any incident of aggression by a nuclear power before the UN Security Council.

(snip)

“James Sherr, a fellow at the Russian and Eurasian program at London-based think tank Chatham House, and key Western expert on Ukraine and Russia described Russia’s conduct during the 17 December 2013 Ukrainian-Russian action plan as violating the Budapest Memorandum through means of economic coercion, stating “Coercion does not show respect for sovereignty. It is a violation of sovereignty. A number of European leaders are as persuaded as I am that Russia employed economic coercion.”[11]

re: #162 Targetpractice

I doubt that very highly; in any event, the new Ukrainian government does need to honor the terms of the treaty (until 2042) unless Russia does something that violates the terms of that treaty, which would nullify it. By that, I mean Russia attempting to annex Crimea back into Russia.

Such a move on the part of the Russians would - and must be - wholly unacceptable.

There’s a good article I was reading, which I’ll link to; it notes that despite appearances of great strength, when one looks behind the curtain with a sharp eye, Russia is actually a power in decline, and one of the things that has the Kremlin so very nervous is that events in Ukraine have served to highlight that fact, something Moscow very much wants to keep concealed.

Adam Smith, Thomas Jefferson, and other fellow travelers

If there was one thing the Revolutionary generation agreed on — and those guys who dress up like them at Tea Party conventions most definitely do not — it was the incompatibility of democracy and inherited wealth.

With Thomas Jefferson taking the lead in the Virginia legislature in 1777, every Revolutionary state government abolished the laws of primogeniture and entail that had served to perpetuate the concentration of inherited property. Jefferson cited Adam Smith, the hero of free market capitalists everywhere, as the source of his conviction that (as Smith wrote, and Jefferson closely echoed in his own words), “A power to dispose of estates for ever is manifestly absurd. The earth and the fulness of it belongs to every generation, and the preceding one can have no right to bind it up from posterity. Such extension of property is quite unnatural.” Smith said: “There is no point more difficult to account for than the right we conceive men to have to dispose of their goods after death.”

Inheriting money is not a crime or dishonest. Someone worked to build the inheritance. Liberals want you to think otherwise.

Yeah, “someone.” Not the inheritor.

Which is “more legal or honest,” then: someone working to build an inheritance, or someone not working and getting a handout inheritance as a gift?

What’s the difference between inheritance and welfare (other than time-shifting when the money’s earned, a la taping/DVRing a TV show or movie)?

Just say you get your insurance from Affordable Care Act and you’re all good. Seriously, they’ve polled people telling them what ACA is and calling it ACA and large numbers approve. You call it Obamacare though and that’s when it starts to get ugly. Of course, a lot of people in the latter actually think Obama himself came up with the Obamacare monicker.

But the profit margins/bilking will only happen on the extant, smaller number of patients he has, rather than the larger pool that the ACA grants access to.

Greed: UR DOIN IT WRONGZ.

That’s the reality of it, cutting off his nose to spite his face. For years now, critics of Medicare have charged that doctors were refusing to take new patients or dropping existing ones because it reimburses based upon what the government bean-counters think a procedure/treatment should cost rather than what the hospital wants to charge. So now that the insurance companies offering plans through the ACA have to abide by the same rules, the hospitals are screaming “Fine then, we just won’t take them either!”

Only an idiot thinks that hospitals can get by on non-subsidized insurance holders.

To admit otherwise, that men are in charge of themselves, would open up the door to forbidden topics, like how it may not actually be necessary to police women’s sexuality under the guise of controlling men. It might even require admitting to having entertained the feminist thought that women might actually be oppressed and that they do not actually have all the power to control male behavior just by being modest and chaste.

If life begins at conception, does that also mean that those women qualify for child tax credits? And if they should imbibe alcohol, smoke a cigarette, or partake in risky behavior before finding out they’re pregnant, wouldn’t that technically be child abuse/endangerment? Should we begin to monitor all girls and women from the moment they have their first period til menopause? This whole idea that life is so precious at conception that abortion should be outlawed as “murder” starts us on a slippery slope the likes of which would make even Orwell scream “JESUS!”

Spaniels can be quirky —bad inbreeding in this country. Our breed has a problem with seizures tho —there is a concern in England as well. We had one girl that had brain cancer —and my little girl has a 1/2 sister with seizures as well. Her owner also hasn’t done an MRI for the same reasons as us. She is on Pheno and it has helped.

Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox disappears in blow to virtual currency

TOKYO (Reuters) - Mt. Gox, once the world’s biggest bitcoin exchange, looked to have essentially disappeared on Tuesday, with its website down, its founder unaccounted for and a Tokyo office empty bar a handful of protesters saying they had lost money investing in the virtual currency.

The digital marketplace operator, which began as a venue for trading cards, had surged to the top of the bitcoin world, but critics - from rival exchanges to burned investors - said Mt. Gox had long been lax over its security.

It was not clear what has become of the exchange, which this month halted withdrawals indefinitely after detecting “unusual activity.” A global bitcoin organization referred to the exchange’s “exit,” while angry investors questioned whether it was still solvent.

A document circulating on the internet, and purporting to be a crisis plan for the exchange, said more than 744,000 bitcoins were “missing due to malleability-related theft”, and noted Mt. Gox had $174 million in liabilities against $32.75 million in assets. It was not possible to verify the document or the exchange’s financial situation.

True, exempting Idaho, they all do have a sizable African-American community and both Texas/New Mexico include large Hispanic communities as well but to call them the most diverse in the nation and to claim that pointing out that some very red states are using a lot on public assistance isn’t racist. It’s in fact pointing out the hypocrisy of red staters to accuse blue states and blue state residents of mooching off the public which is obviously what the whole point was.

You know what even if he did that say that, let’s look at reality here. 1964, the Republicans nominated one of the few people in their party who voted against the bill for president, 1968 Richard Nixon embraces Strom Thurmond and the Southern Strategy, 1980 Reagan gives a speech on “states rights” where three Civil Rights workers were kidnapped and later murdered, 1988 the Willie Horton Ad, and 2000 Bush takes some heat from having spoken at Bob Jones University which had only recently repealed a ban on interracial dating. There’s a reason why African Americans dislike and distrust the Republican Party and it wasn’t because of “free stuff” it was in large part because the Republicans went out of their way to transform from once being the party of Lincoln to the party of the people he opposed.

re: #225 Pie-onist Overlord

The polio-like symptoms appear to be some kind of virus that is similar to polio. Speculation that the outbreak is an enterovirus, and further testing is needed to confirm.

There are a couple of enteroviruses that could be in play, including one that has been previously identified as one that could cause neurological problems, including paralysis.

Enterovirus is often the cause of “summer colds,” whose cases spike in July, August and September. Children and teens are more likely to fall ill because they have not yet built up immunity to these common viruses.

However, some types of enterovirus are more serious. These can cause hand, foot and mouth disease; viral meningitis; encephalitis (inflammation of the brain); an infection of the heart; and paralysis in some patients.
Enterovirus 68 was first identified in a California lab in 1962, after four children came down with a severe respiratory illness. Between 1970 and 2005, only 26 cases of enterovirus 68 in the United States were reported to the CDC. Since 2000, the government agency has kept a closer watch and has seen 47 cases, Oberste said. Outbreaks have occurred over the years in Asia and Europe, but it’s still one of the rarest types of enterovirus.

More common — and more concerning to health officials — is enterovirus 71, which was discovered by the same California lab in 1969, Oberste said. Enterovirus 71 is usually associated with severe neurological issues, including aseptic meningitis, polio-like paralysis and encephalitis. Waubant is not sure if the samples from this latest group of patients were tested for enterovirus 71.

According to a CDC report, several outbreaks of paralysis caused by enterovirus 71 were seen in Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, fatal encephalitis was a big problem in Malaysia and Taiwan.

272 lawhawk  Tue, Feb 25, 2014 6:13:06am

Am I supposed to be shocked that currency speculators and others are losing their shirts over Bitcoin as one of the exchanges has gone dark with no explanation? Mt. Gox is disappeared - as is its founder.

The website of Tokyo-based Mt. Gox was returning a blank page Tuesday. The disappearance of the site follows the resignation Sunday of Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles from the board of the Bitcoin Foundation, a group seeking legitimacy for the currency, and a withdrawal ban imposed at the exchange earlier this month.

Prominent members of the Bitcoin community — including San Francisco-based wallet service Coinbase and Chinese exchange BTC China — sought to shore up confidence in the currency by saying Mt. Gox’s collapse was an isolated case of mismanagement. They said it had abused users’ trust, but did not offer details on how.

“As with any new industry, there are certain bad actors that need to be weeded out, and that is what we are seeing today,” the statement said.

Documents purportedly leaked from the company lay out the scale of the problem. An 11-page “Crisis Strategy Draft” published on the blog of entrepreneur and Bitcoin enthusiast Ryan Selkis says that 740,000 bitcoins are missing from Mt. Gox, which roughly translates to hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of losses, although figures are fuzzy given Bitcoin’s extreme volatility.

It’s a virtual currency with no safety net. And there’s no current regulations in place. States and countries are looking at ways to regulate the currency exchanges, as well as setting up rules to deal with whether the sale/exchange is a taxable event (for sales tax purposes) or whether it is subject to capital gains taxes or other taxing basis.

That one of the biggest sites disappeared without a trace shows just how risky these sites are, but expect the usual suspects (DudeBros among them) to complain that regulatory oversight undermines the purpose of the Bitcoin (to have anonymity - itself laughable considering that you’re required to provide more ID than if you were using plain old American cash).

If the minimum wage is not enough to keep a family from needing food stamps and other welfare while working a 40 hour week, then the minimum wage is too low. exactly. employees will always be a expense —no matter how much philosophers and economists try to extoll the “value” of labor.

On the balance sheet all numbers related to employees are on the expense side —not the income side.

If you insist that employees are just another business expense to be minimized, like toner cartridges and staples, then that view is entirely consistent.

But toner cartridges do not require public aid when they are put out behind the dumpster.

IIRC, Pennsylvania has the 2nd-highest retired population.

Most retirees can no longer afford to move. Many fewer people have pensions anymore and the 401ks or other retirement schemes aren’t working for people.

A friend’s 80-something old dad died a few yrs ago; he retired from a steel mill, just a working class guy, to FL 30 yrs ago when people like him could still do it because he had a guaranteed pension.

That is the full-on Free-Market view of labor: government has no role in regulating it. Employers pay the lowest rate they can negotiate to hire a workforce. if that is below the level needed to sustain a family, then it is the fault of the poor lazy employee for not being more qualified,

Just listen to Right Wing arguments on the minimum wage and labor law, that is what they are all based on.

I’d say that adding an entire testament on top of the original work (moving from Judaism to Christianity) is a pretty damn big change.

But you know, that’s just me, from the perspective of a godless heathen. I guess adding an entire extra part isn’t considered ‘changing’ the gospel, in religious circles.

What do you want to bet that Mr. “Gospel must be changed for no one” eats shellfish and wears mixed fabrics?

I wouldn’t mind religion so much if it’s followers weren’t such blatant and obvious hypocrites — something that their own god specifically condemns in that book they love so much, over and over and over and over and over again.

Do you really think corporations will do the right thing when no one is looking? (the definition of integrity, btw) There HAVE to be enforceable rules and regulations on these entities or we all pay the price for it. When you go and interview for a job at Wal-Mart they also include info on how to apply for food stamps and other forms of aid because they refuse to pay their employees a living wage. Who pays for that? We all do. They get tax breaks and incentives, they pay hardly any federal taxes and they suck money from taxpayer funded programs. Sure, they’re changing their tune now, but only because of outside pressure and exposure of how they operate. There should be a bottom line allowed by law or there won’t BE a bottom line to protect workers. Companies of all stripes have proven this over and over and over. From worker’s rights to environmental violations, to tax avoidance schemes and manipulating the laws, they can’t be trusted unless they are forced to. NO ONE should work a 40 hour week and not be able to afford food, clothing, shelter, transportation and medical care. We used to have that, it’s gone now and it’s wrong.

That’s a good line, derisive but not rabid. And raining on the Democratic governors’ parade was the sort of thing Jindal needs to do if he intends to run for president in 2016.

It’s another meaningless line Dark. Jindal even waters-down his own line when he admits “I think we can do better than that.”

Another big problem is for all of Obama’s years in office we all know that Jindal and the other GOP congressmen have done nothing but stand in the way of anything that would help do what Jindal thinks they could do.

Let’s put it in gun terms fro you…Jindal is a square blank of gun metal. He thinks he could be a gun but right now all he is a chunk of metal. Get back to us when you are turned and bored, all the other fittings are added and you can shoot some real live bullets. Right now you are useless.

Boeing Paid No Federal Income Tax Last Year: Analysis

One of the largest recipients of federal government contracts paid nothing in taxes last year, according to an analysis from the Center for Effective Government, a left-leaning think tank.

Boeing reported an $82 million tax refund last year, but made $5.9 billion in U.S. pre-tax profits during the same period, the analysis of the company’s recent government filings found. That means Boeing paid a federal tax rate of -1.4 percent. At the same time, the company won 4.4 percent of all federal contracts last year, according to the report.

Ohio:

Similar to AZ’s current anti-gay S.Bill 1062 is Ohio’s H. Bill No. 376 #SB1062 legislature.state.oh.us

Columbus…Ohio State Capitol. At one time Columbus’ gay population was considered to be second only to San Francisco.

I would wager that there are several gays working in the Kasich administration though that might not be common knowledge.

We have our whacko’s in this state, but with four major cities, tons of universities and all that…those bills will have a hard go of it. And should they be passed, I wouldn’t expect them to last. And it sure has a lot to do with generational thinking. All that hopefully will be gone when a bunch of people pass on.

It is possible that a doctor trying to get information about a particular policy obtained through the exchanges might run into issues, particularly because of the grace period (the period between when the person signed up, and when they paid), but that’s on the insurers to straighten out. The doctors may not want to deal with the gap period, particularly if an insurer tries to play games with not paying out on their policies - but that’s not on Obamacare - it’s on the unscrupulous insurers who are still gaming the system.

Insurers have always played games about what they will pay out. And these problems will also go away after the first year since the system will be in place and the annual benefits enrollment will be fixed (as opposed to the first year rolling period with extensions).

Not to diminish the direct impact on LGBT people in Uganda, but it occurs to me that the “gay ban” is pretty much the perfect political tool for criminalizing dissent: it’s an accusation that you really can’t make go away, And even if you don’t meet the standards for conviction, you’re likely to experience social exile, since other people won’t want to be penalized for not “reporting” you after the public accusation.

He’s sore because his son agreed to support Sen. Gillibrand anti-sexual assault bill, though that bill is currently be held up by other senators in an effort to force Harry Reid to allow a floor vote on the Iran sanctions bills.

The elder Cruz likely didn’t get it when his lawyer son explained how he has a problem with lawbreakers getting away with their crimes, and thus is now lashing out.

Note: The preceding should not be read as overall support for Ted Cruz, only that he supports Sen. Gillibrand’s bill for one of the right reasons (that reason being an understanding that to allow rapists to go unpunished is incompatible with a proper belief in justice).

I live by the sentiment of treating people how I want to be treated, and treating everyone equally. Largely that graphic contains ideas I can agree with, but it expresses what seems to be a core tenet of the whole ‘privilege’ concept of the social justice movement that I simply cannot abide:

A. Because I am ‘privileged’ I will ‘shut up’.
B. When I try to speak, and people just scream ‘privilege’ at me, I’ll just take it and reflect that maybe they might have a point somewhere.

That’s not social justice. That’s thinly-disguised retaliation.

Western Ukraine got rid of all the SOviet symbolism long ago, around the time of Independence. They replaced all the Lenins with statues of Shevchenko (a poet).

The communists in other parts of the country had their fee-fees hurt if anyone tried to remove the Lenins, and would claim these are “historical” statues and have them left in place. The “Leninopad” began with the toppling of the statue in Kyiv this time around.

I’ve seen photos suggesting that they’ve finally removed his bust from the walls of the Teatralna metro station; good thing, as it used to scare my godson, who called it the Babay (boogieman).

Also too: Jews in the Maidan. And I keep waiting for the ethnic cleansing of Russians and Jews that the Putin apologists claim is coming. No sign yet.

If that attitude was being enforced with any consequences, you might be right. As it is, a suggestion to listen to someone with a different perspective could be a good thing, especially if you’re operating on the assumption that other people want to be treated the same way you want to be treated.

If someone screams anything at you, the conversation is over. Doesn’t matter who holds the ‘privilege’ there.

A Christian business that refused to serve any customer that has committed ANY sin according to the Christian bible would serve no one.

Why do they pick and choose which sins to support? Why are they ALLOWED to pick and choose which sins to support? Who amongst them is without sin?

If you ever find the true answer to that, get back with us. Instead of looking at themselves, it seems many religious types have to stand in judgement of others. They also always seem to have to have an enemy or a group to hate. Again, they should look at the enemy to others that lies within themselves. But they get so pumped up on their own righteousness they fail to see their own failings as Christians.

By the way, Today’s APR illustrates well just how far Arizona overstepped with their “It’s okay to discriminate against the gays” bill. Part of the reason so many of the same Republicans who voted for it are in a panic asking Brewer to veto it is because they know she’s just bat-shit crazy enough to sign it…and then they lose their second Superbowl hosting opportunity in just over 20 years.

The Arizona Super Bowl game day is Feb 1, 2015,

There’s not enough time to move that Super Bowl, associated events, infrastructure, and housing to another state,

Constantly available internet access doesn’t erase racism, sexism, ableism, etc. Also, you may have missed this in the graphic GGT posted:

Most people occupy multiple social positions with multiple levels of privilege or disadvantage.

The idea of ‘privilege’ is a meaningful sociological construct. People on Twitter will continue to use it with varying degrees of coherence. People with no internet access will not, of course.

Gus, I asked you last night too. Where did the OWS/OO commenter at Greenwald’s guy say anyone was going to shoot cops?

I am no Occupy Anything backer, but there is some blatant coloring going on with that one. And Kilgore quoting himself and then going back over your screen capture of the comment and building his outrage over an OWS guy posting on Facebook he was going to shoot cops looks to be nothing but a troll fabricating a bunch of crap over a group he doesn’t like.

Show me some proof the guy said anything about shooting cops. I know Kilgore likes to troll, but I sure as heck didn’t think Gus would take part.

Listening is one thing, but if the other person is primarily using the charge of ‘privilege’ as a weapon, then the situation changes. They don’t have to scream to do that, and I admit that it is not always straightforward determining if that is what is going on. Like most social rules, it takes a fair bit of good judgement to distinguish between just anger and self-serving rhetoric.

Presumably if you’re in a conversation with someone on a topic of mutual interest, and they say your perspective might be clouded by privilege, you could talk about that, and agree, disagree, or come to no conclusion about the accuracy of the statement.

Are you (and I’d like to ask GunstarGreen also) saying that bringing up privilege is tactical move and no longer an exchange of information?

I’m saying it can be a tactical move. Often it isn’t, but its the sort of thing that is likely to be weaponized by people seeking to gain an advantage in a debate. Thus I think claims of privilege need to be scrutinized to ensure their legitimacy.

The problem, of course, is that an unscrupulous person could also falsely accuse of someone of weaponization of the charge of ‘privilege’ to shut them up or delegitimize them. I think things really come down to identifying and avoiding assholes, since they’re the one’s most likely to try such a thing.

It comes down to scrutinizing all claims, and avoiding all assholes.

But I’ve never seen an actual case of someone misusing a claim of ‘you have privilege that you’re not acknowledging’. I see peremptory defenses against it.

When it is thrown out as a label in a debate with the intent of deriding the opponent’s arguments it needs to be heavily backed up. Otherwise it is simply be used to deflect answering the questions being raised.
