Investigative reporter Julia Angwin was curious what Google knew about her, so she asked the company for her search data. “It turns out I had been doing about 26,000 Google searches a month … and I was amazed at how revealing they were,” she tells Fresh Air’s Dave Davies.

From NSA sweeps to commercial services scraping our Web browsing habits, to all kinds of people tracking us through our smartphones, Angwin says we’ve become a society where indiscriminate data-gathering has become the norm. Angwin has covered online privacy issues for years, and in her new book she describes what she did to try to escape the clutches of data scrapers, even to the point of creating a fake identity.

“I want all the benefits of the information society; all I was trying to do is mitigate some of the risk,” she says.

If you think your desktop/laptop computing acts are being tracked by corporations, they’ve got nothing on the mobile computing business. Every smartphone app, especially the free ones, seek out bits of information about the user.

Apps that you’d think have nothing to do with montezation, like a flashlight, may be opening up doors to data - like phone usage, gps usage, or contact lists.

Heck, most apps seek access (and we blindly accept them) to items on your phones that they have no business seeking. Some of that is the result of lazy coding, but it’s also exposing people to risks that their data will be used for nefarious purposes.

The HP study focused purely on custom business apps, but there’s no reason to believe the issue doesn’t extend to commercial apps you find in the Apple App Store or Google Play. Many apps have access to data or permission to perform functions they shouldn’t.


Almost every app HP tested contained some sort of privacy issue.
If you want to play a game like Angry Birds, there’s no reason that it needs to have access to your contacts, and a weather app probably doesn’t need to be able to send email on your behalf. The security risks in apps go beyond permissions, though. There are issues in how the apps integrate with core functions of the mobile operating system, as well as how they interact with and share information with one another.

In the HP study, 97 percent of the apps contained some sort of privacy issue. HP also found that 86 percent of the apps lack basic security defenses, and 75 percent fail to properly encrypt data. Assuming similar percentages across the hundreds of thousands of consumer apps in the app stores, it’s likely that you have a few security or privacy concerns floating around your smartphone or tablet.

I’m carrying this over from the previous thread. Last night Kilgore was all over this comment (see image above Gus captured at Greenwald’s new news site) that was made in regard to a guy that was part of Occupy Wall Street.

Kilgore is all outraged that the guy was stupid enough to comment in Facebook that they were prepared to “shoot cops” during their Oakland protests.

Does anyone else see anywhere where there is any fact that anyone was going to shoot cops?

This will be my last attempt to get Kilgore to respond. Maybe Gus can weigh in too. Outside of that, I will just go with what I think is really going on and be satisfied with that.

Thanks for continuing to publicize that, I think it’s important for people to see. However I haven’t responded because from the tone of your questions I can tell that we’ll never agree, reach common ground or have a constructive discussion. I’ve been through the process enough times to know it’s pointless. We can just disagree and that’s fine. Also, it used to be a rule around here that carrying out squabbles from thread to thread, day after day, sometimes even years was discouraged. Many people don’t care about past petty squabbles and they can take over the whole blog if they go unchecked.

Maybe I’m just getting complacent, but for the day to day stuff, I don’t mind if Google or Amazon gather data to suggest better search results or items to purchase. For things that are not well culturally accepted there’s always TOR.
To me this is different than NSA snooping. Private corps are not bound by the 4th amendment.

It appears to me that it is saying the opposite, i.e. that violence in response to police would be a bad thing and that this was generally agreed upon by those discussing the issue.

Well, Kutuzov is a different case than Lenin, but frankly right now Ukrainians aren’t going to be friendly to any statues of Russians. The likely exceptions would be war memorials depicting common soldiers and monument tanks (most of which are T-34/85s). Those are likely safe.

That said, Ukrainians should try to ensure the Mikhail Kutuzov statue is undamaged and should offer to ship it to Russia at a 50/50 shared expense.

This is the same guy who claimed that a speech by Christopher Hitchens, on the occasion of Canada proposing government censorship, during which speech he talked almost exclusively about government censorship, wasn’t actually about government censorship.

Like most performance, art, it comes off as just a massive self-indulgence.

I’m sure it’s been tried before but I doubt premeditated self defense against lawful police activity is not a viable legal defense. Also the dude seems fairly certain that the specific conversation led to the warning about protesters shooting police. Why would he be so convinced? If it really was a non violent strategy discussion he would assume the warning came from somewhere else. He knows the warning came from that specific conversation for good reason.
I also strongly suspect that if that comment had been posted by a Tea Party organizer you would have no trouble interpreting it correctly. I’m not that flexible.

26,000 searches for the year might be closer to reality (and a likely typo).

26,000 works out to about 2166 per month or about 100 per day. That works out to a bit more than 13 per hour. It’s still a lot but more manageable.

This part is actually especially funny. Basically, Killgore has said and done a lot of really stupid, egregious shit, like creepily celebrating women getting assaulted while making up bizarre bullshit about them, declared himself a “Classical liberal” based on a quick skim of Wikipedia and then gotten the most basic tenant of how classical liberalism views the assignation of rights wrong, and other self-clownings like being not just wrong, but the opposite of right about the Hitchens video I cited above.

Think about it: Who is it who prefers that past arguments get dropped—those for whom the arguments show them in a good light, or those for whom the arguments show them negatively?

There’s certainly no point in constantly bringing up something that’s actually trivial or petty, but things that are substantially wrong—like being the kind of weirdo that declares on zero basis that two women getting pepper-sprayed by cops deserve it for being violent Marxist trustfunders—that’s the kind of thing that should be brought up.

You can’t really be an honest debater without acknowledging past mistakes. You don’t have to make a complete obeisance about it, but when you pull the exact same stunt, you’re going to have to expect them to be brought up again.

To be fair, the discussion didn’t deal with preemptive defense, which would have meant actions such as shooting riot police as they approached. Instead the comment states the conversation was about “defending ourselves against police suppression” which implies a reactive approach after contact.

Preemptive tactics were not discussed in that comment, so you should not allege them.

There’s actually two questions: One is what right do you have to resist police aggression, and the other what you should do in practical terms. For the citizens of Venezuela right now, this is more than a theoretical question. For many citizens of the US throughout history, like striking workers, black men targeted by the police, gay men in raided bars, this has been a non-academic question. The Stonewall Riots were exactly people resisting police violence with violence.

It is an interesting and complex area both in theory and in practice, and the flip side of it—how restrained the police should be in the use of force, is likewise interesting. Force is the easy choice in either case, and, I strongly feel, the wrong choice in most cases. Breaking up protests with police force, or responding to even an illegitimate arrest with force are, questions of rights aside, practical mistakes.

So I drive into work this morning, then realize a block from base that I didn’t have my ID, knowing its probably sitting at my cubicle at my office like a few months ago. No problem, I’ve been able to use my building ID to get on base before.

So I get to the gate, and of course I get the hard ass. Pulls me over for a vehicle search, then tells me I have to pull completely off base before I can circle around the 20ft it would take me to reach the visitor’s center to call into my office.

I pull around to the visitor’s center and use the courtesy phone. No one in my office is picking up any of their phones.

So I drive all the way home, I have to call fricking Norfolk to find anyone in the office, just so they can send an email to the San Diego team to tell them to call me at home.

Fuck it, I’m not driving back in to the base today.

You can run number of searches up pretty quick when trying to hone down to the proper set of keywords.

I was trying to find whether or not you could get a small, simple, shelf that could potentially be put inside a box in order to keep a heavy object (that I want to take out of the box first) from crushing a bunch of smaller objects that would also be in the box. Alternate was finding a basket of an appropriate size to fit in the box to hold the small objects - but hard since these objects (small boxes) almost fill the rest of the box space.

I probably did 50+ separate search queries in under a half hour simply tweaking key words between “shelf”, “box”, “wire”, etc. and trying to narrow results to (hopefully?) appropriate sites.

I’m sure it’s been tried before but I doubt premeditated self defense against lawful police activity is not a viable legal defense. Also the dude seems fairly certain that the specific conversation led to the warning about protesters shooting police. Why would he be so convinced? If it really was a non violent strategy discussion he would assume the warning came from somewhere else. He knows the warning came from that specific conversation for good reason.

U.S. marshals have launched a search for an “extremely violent” sex offender from Snohomish County who cut off his GPS bracelet and disappeared in Denver four days ago, authorities said.

Eric Eugene Hartwell, 51, was arrested and convicted in Washington state for the rape of a 6-year-old child in 1991. He was again convicted of indecent liberties in 1996 while on court-ordered supervision.

He was paroled Dec. 20, 2013, according to the Colorado Department of Corrections. Last Friday, authorities found his electronic tracking bracelet at a halfway house. Hartwell had disappeared.

An investigation by the Department of Transportation concluded that some family members had not been contracted two days after the crash, and it took five days to reach the families of all 291 passengers.

According to a consent order it signed with the department, Asiana will pay $400,000 in a fine and gets a $100,000 credit for “costs in sponsoring multiple industry-wide conferences and training sessions in 2013, 2014 and 2015, to provide lessons learned.”

Exactly. And a little story about uncomfortable stereotyping. I have a friend who way back when he first was out of high school in the late 70s walked into a bar north of the Ohio State campus. He thought he had found a honey hole as there was nothing but lovely young ladies all over.

So he plopped down on a bar stool and ordered up a beer. I can’t remember the price they were wanting to charge him, but lets say it was a hint. He was offended and said something like “what the hell, I’ll never come to this bar again” and the female bartender said something like…”exactly…we don’t want you here.”

He came back to his house where several of us hung out. He told us about it, one guy asked him what bar and as soon as he told us we all broke out laughing. He picked a very well-known lesbian club that almost everyone that knew anything about anything knew the reputation of said bar.

I don’t think he ever lived that one down.

This is precisely correct. To take it further If you are a religious institution whose “business” is the provision of religious services, it seems to me that one can argue one need not violate one’s own beliefs in providing that service. So a church or its priest could in my mind rightfully refuse to officiate a same sex service. I don’t agree with it, but I see it as defensible.

If on the other hand your business is a registered business, and not a religious charity, and if that business is the provision of and goods or service that is not fundamental to one’s religion, one cannot discriminate and violate the human rights of another in the name of religious freedom.

The cross roads for this debate relates to hospitals or academic institutions that are affiliated or run by religious institutions. This is a very tricky area that the courts are working out right now around birth control under Obamacare plans.

in my opinion, the provision of medical services is otherwise governed by civil laws, and therefore if one wishes to be an accredited hospital or something other than a “faith healer” one must provide those services in accordance with the laws of the land. A hospital that refuses to respect the human rights and civil laws of this society should immediately lose its license to operate as a hospital and all the rights and privileges that it brings. A separate category of “faith healing institutions” should be created for them, and practitioners within those institutions should be deemed “faith healers” and not “doctors”.

With respect to academic instiutions affiliated with or run by religious insitutions, I think they need to choose. Either you are a “religious college” or a secular college with religious affiliations. If you are a “religious college” by all means do what you want, and lose your academic accreditation. Other schools will need to adhere to the laws of the land.

That was all over many auto racing forums this past weekend. Didn’t seem to go over as they hoped. Myself, it wasn’t a bad delivery and arrangement, but they failed to realize that most people (especially a rather conservative NASCAR good-ol’ boy crowd) likes it straight up with little embellishment. So overall…fail!

It’s funny that singers will catch shit for using a little vocal embellishment, while these guys actually went ahead and changed the melody.

Stravinsky got arrested for ‘tampering’ with the melody back in 1940. But given that this band is owned lock stock and drum kit by a RWNJ, they’ll get away with it.

I mentioned downstairs - a friend of mine answered a cattle call audition for that band. Not only did they demand that every member be conservative, they made everyone who auditioned sign a NDA - most likely to keep word from getting out about how bad they sucked.

I’m sure it’s been tried before but I doubt premeditated self defense against lawful police activity is not a viable legal defense. Also the dude seems fairly certain that the specific conversation led to the warning about protesters shooting police. Why would he be so convinced? If it really was a non violent strategy discussion he would assume the warning came from somewhere else. He knows the warning came from that specific conversation for good reason.
I also strongly suspect that if that comment had been posted by a Tea Party organizer you would have no trouble interpreting it correctly. I’m not that flexible.

As one of the moderators on a Occupy* chat, we’ve had discussions on this topic several times through the years.
For the record, strict adherence to non-violence is still assumed and enforced, at least in the chat I mod, and I know that it was one of the core values of the people who got the ball rolling.
I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve asked chat participants to cease and desist when the discussion has veered into active self-defence, pointing out that one should assume the chat is monitored by law enforcement, and that the situation hadn’t deteriorated to the point where active self-defence measures would be a necessary topic to discuss.
The position of us mods was that once things got as bad as police or other snipers began taking shots at occupiers, like the case has been in Iran and Ukraine, then we would consider allowing a limited subset of the topic being discussed.
I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve had to kick people out of the chat, how many people we’ve had to ban outright when they clearly haven’t understood that Occupy* wasn’t limited to the United States, the importance of non-violence, and that hate speech is counter-productive.
And that the those rules apply across the majority of the Occupy* sites and internet fora. Man, if I had $1 for each butthurt soul that wandered into the chat after being kicked out elsewhere, then being even more butthurt after getting kicked and/or banned from us too.
Not to mention the very interesting common denominators of the individuals who showed unwillingness to abide by the rules, or the means they chose to express their butthurt, or what they tried to push on the chat.

Thanks for the informed insider’s response. Unfortunately I think a lot of people have lost sight of the nonviolent resistance methods and ethics. I have no doubt there was/is a lot of lip service for the concepts but too many people get caught up in the group victim mentality and things get quickly out of hand. Although Oakland had particularly bad problems it wasn’t just OWS or lefties, it’s a wider cultural problem.

Even this is problematic. Although such plans may not be illegal it’s certainly something the authorities would be interested in. In the interest of public safety, this is why police should infiltrate online communities where these discussions are taking place. Even if the discussions aren’t officially endorsed by the group leaders police need to keep an eye on people who might pose a danger to the public.

Withdrawal by the end of the year if a deal isn’t reached? Yeah, that’s huge, but there’s a few things missing from the story that would add needed context.

We know that there’s supposed to be elections in April, and the new government may want to sign the agreement. But if Obama’s pushing to withdraw by the end of the year, the military needs time to get that option done- it takes time to withdraw those forces (about 33k remaining in country). We don’t know the drop dead date - and that’s probably on purpose. Keep Karzai guessing and force his hand, because if you let him know the date, he’ll waiver until the last moment instead of signing early.

Having the election also complicates matters, since it would suggest that Obama is giving the Afghan government until some time in late April or early May to decide.

It also complicates getting US forces and equipment out of Afghanistan. If you cut the time it takes to get the forces out, it increases the costs - flying out troops/equipment versus driving them out via Pakistan.

And to be sure, the Taliban are watching all this and waiting for their opportunities too.

Think less “Iron Man” and more like allowing a man carrying 150 lbs of gear to move like he was carrying 20lbs of gear.

And needing sufficient training in the equipment to understand that he still has the inertia and center of gravity of the full 150lbs of gear.

The early models couldn’t be run indoors because of the fumes from the engine and required hearing protection to operate.

I’m guessing they got around that at least.

In one of Joe Haldeman’s books with ‘Fighting Suits’, there was a lot of training given to keep you from breaking your back with a servo-amplified attempt to scratch an itch.

I think some of the early plans suggested only 1-2 suits per squad to help carry gear, so the other troops could simply carry less in the first place.

Thanks for the informed insider’s response. Unfortunately I think a lot of people have lost sight of the nonviolent resistance methods and ethics. I have no doubt there was/is a lot of lip service for the concepts but too many people get caught up in the group victim mentality and things get quickly out of hand. Although Oakland had particularly bad problems it wasn’t just OWS or lefties, it’s a wider cultural problem.

Actually, for the chat I help modding, we do more than merely pay lip service to the concepts, we also explain why the concepts are there, and most people seem to understand once told why we enforce certain rules very hard.

Even this is problematic. Although such plans may not be illegal it’s certainly something the authorities would be interested in. It’s very unlikely that police snipers would initiate a slaughter like we was in Ukraine and having the discussions can feed violent paranoid fantasies. In the interest of public safety, this is why police should infiltrate online communities where these discussions are taking place. Even if the discussions aren’t officially endorsed by the group leaders police need to keep an eye on people who might pose a danger to the public.

You misunderstood me. We never had the discussion. We simply came to the consensus that if —God forbid— things deteriorated to that level, we’d meet again to consider things. We saw no reason to implement active self-defence measures or even discussing such, even tho there were rotten cops that made life hell for the people on the ground.
And even if there are snipers taking shots at you, there are non-violent means to respond to such a situation and turn it to your advantage, it just takes brains to resist the urge to go with the eye for an eye reflex.

That’s nearly 840 searches per day. Even for an investigative reporter, that seems like an awful lot.

It’s not entirely clear if a “search” also counts things like contextual advertisements. Depending on the site, you could easily get a dozen Google-powered contextual adverts from a single page view, or more if it was an article spread out over several pages (a detestible practice, IMHO).

I don’t think the NFL has enough time to move the Feb 1, 2014 Super Bowl with *all* its associated events, infrastructure, and housing to another state.

If it was scaled down, perhaps New Orleans or Miami, but it would still be a different Super Bowl week.
