It’s a complicated situation. I don’t have a handle on all the different aspects: land conflicts, nomads versus agriculturalists, factions aligned with pre- and post-coup governments, religion….

What’s holding the future of news back
There are some artifacts and ideas in the journalism business that arguably are counterproductive to the growth of both quality journalism and quality businesses. It’s why some organizations are finding it so hard to move forward.
An obvious one is the bloated cost structure left over from the news industry’s monopoly/oligopoly days. Nobody promised every news outfit a shiny headquarters tower, big expense accounts, and lots of secretaries!
Unions and pensions are another holdover. Both were useful once, but now impose a structural rigidity in a rapidly changing environment. They make it hard to respond to a changing financial environment and to nimbler competition. The better model for incentivizing employees is sharing equity in the company.

How’d he get hold of 5.7mm AP rounds for his FN Five-seveN? FN doesn’t sell those rounds to civilians nor would US law permit such a sale. So this guy’s ammo would be illegal in any state in the union and yet he got hold of it. This one can’t be blamed on lack of gun control, given that the ammo in the gun was illegal.

Images emerged on 20 February of a modified prototype Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) J-20 fifth-generation fighter undertaking high-speed taxi runs.

These taxi runs are presumably prior to its maiden flight and suggest it may be a pre-production variant slated for formal testing by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).

Photographs of the prototype first appeared on Chinese military web sites in December 2013 and January, although some of these images appeared to have been digitally altered. The prototype carries the bort number ‘2011’ and shows modifications intended to improve engine performance, combat capability and stealth.

Most noticeable are redesigned engine intakes featuring more of a sloped ‘caret’ design said to improve pressure distributions for the engine. The vertical stabilizers have been clipped in their outer aft corners and the main wheel doors and the internal weapons bay cover feature larger scalloping to aid low observability. The canopy also features a new brace.

A new electronic targeting system is located below the nose and just aft the radar. This and the J-20’s distributed infrared sensor system points indicate Chengdu’s ambitions to give the J-20 an optical and infrared targeting and warning system similar to that of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Well after way too long a delay (I got it for Christmas) I finally started playing XCOM Enemy Uniknow.

Already had to do my first restart due to running afoul of an unwritten rule as a lack of any source of extra engineers meant that I could not build the building which gave you more engineers, and you can sort of guess how that went.

The good news is though that I just managed to successfully deactivate a plebtonium bomb in Australia with no casualties (two of the five soldiers involved in the operation were wounded but that is nothing a week or two of bed rest can’t fix) and we even brought one of the gray bastards back with us alive!

The F-22 is a far more formidable opponent against the J-20. Faster, longer range, more maneuverable, and so on. Not only that. At this point the F-22 is cheaper per unit to the F-35. The F-35 is simply not an air-superiority weapon.

Herkimer County men accused of sexually abusing cows

35-year-old Michael Jones, of Cedarville Road in Ilion, and 31-year-old Reid Fontaine are charged with sexual misconduct, a misdemeanor.

The owner of a local farm set up video surveillance in his barn, trying to figure out why his cows appeared anxious and were not producing normally. The owner later contacted State Police after video revealed the cows were being sexually abused.

Police say their investigation found Jones agreed to videotape Fontaine as he tried to have sexual contact with several cows.

I don’t know her intended major, but if she wants a good liberal arts education at a school that won’t break the bank, may I suggest Berea College in Berea, Kentucky? Centre College in Danville, which is where my daughter went, also has generous financial aid.

Just heard on the local news, the City of Columbus just put in a bid for the Republican National Convention. Uggh. But it does not surprise me since Ohio has been a critical battleground state, Columbus is the State Capitol, We have a lot of conservative money and everyone keeps saying Governor John Kasich is a legit candidate hopeful.

So, it would be big for the city, maybe let people know how much Columbus has grown and the economic and political power hidden here.

As far as Kasich, recent polls have him dropping in numbers for reelection. And that is against a guy that most Ohioans don’t even know. Kasich isn’t all that loved here, but that doesn’t mean they won’t try to sell him to the nation. Double Uggh!!

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The region’s being hit by flurries and some parts might get a dusting, and as of course I’m typing this, it looks like a full blown blizzard in lower Manhattan. However, it’s not the snow that is the problem. It’s the cold - again. It’s not supposed to get above freezing until this weekend.

In the meantime, today marks another somber anniversary at the WTC - the 1993 WTC bombing occurred 21 years ago. Six people were killed, and more than 1,000 injured in what was a prologue to the 9/11 attacks that destroyed the WTC entirely.


The six who were murdered by the terrorists on that day:

Monica Rodrigues Smith age 36, a secretary, who was seven months pregnant, was in her office checking time sheets in the B-2 level.
Robert (Bob) Kirkpatrick, age 61, Senior Structural Maintenance Supervisor.
Bill Macko, age 57, General Maintenance Supervisor, Mechanical Section.
Stephen Knapp, age 47, Chief Maintenance Supervisor, Mechanical Section . Kirkpatrick, Macko and Knapp were eating lunch together in a room next to Smith’s office at the time of the bombing.
John DiGiovanni, age 45, a dental products salesperson, was parking in the underground garage.
Wilfredo Mercado, age 37, a receiving agent for Windows on the World restaurant, was checking in deliveries.

Smith was seven months pregnant at the time.

The WTC complex has been under construction, and yesterday marked another milestone in the rebuilding process. The much-maligned Calatrava transit hub (mostly maligned because of the cost, which was initially $2.2 billion and now expected to cost more than twice that) is still under construction, but the first permanent platform was opened yesterday.


The mezzanine level is clad in marble and white on white is the primary color palate throughout. It is very similar in design to the East West connector I’ve posted about before. I just wonder how the materials will hold up under the constant foot-traffic, especially given the winter weather we’re having. Thus far, the Port Authority has put down carpets to try and keep the access areas dry and safe, so we’ll see.

Thanks. But yeah, this kind of shit just sets some dangerous precedents. Hell in Idaho, I actually read about legislation that was introduced that would allow firefighters, cops, and doctors to deny help and aid to LGBT people if they deem LGBT behavior sinful. And then there are the so called conscience oaths that allow pharmacists to deny birth coverage to unwed and young women if their religious beliefs don’t believe in birth control. Now call me naive but I think if your religious beliefs conflict with secular society’s needs, you shouldn’t be involved in something. No one is saying these people have to accept homosexuality isn’t a sin but they do have to accept that homosexuals are human beings and they refuse to do that.

True. I posted the WaPo piece mostly to show that David Frum’s excerpt was a low-context ‘Got’cha’. I tend to agree more with John McCain (whose views on Ukraine are also featured in the piece) rather than Rand Paul. That said, Sen. Paul’s position on this matter is coherent and considered, and felt that needed to be brought out.

If Frum had pulled that got’cha on a Democrat, I probably would have gotten behind it instead of criticizing it under ‘Special Rule: Go Team, Go!’.

And enforcing laws that prohibit those kinds of discriminatory actions isn’t infringing on the religious beliefs of the persons involved. Religion doesn’t give a fallback position to discriminate.

Besides, swap out black for gay in the cake scenario and you see what we’re talking about:

I’m not going to sell you a wedding cake from my bakery because you’re black gay.

See how that works? Apparently the right wingers who are supporting this kind of behavior don’t, or think that the Obama Administration is waging war on religion, ignoring that the government is protecting the rights of everyone - including the religious rights of the consumer by prohibiting the discriminatory acts.

My brother has a German Short-haired Pointer that’s a total spaz…until he’s out pheasant hunting. Then the dog turns into a super-intelligent, hyper-focused machine. It really is amazing.

Hell in Idaho, I actually read about legislation that was introduced that would allow firefighters, cops, and doctors to deny help and aid to LGBT people if they deem LGBT behavior sinful. And then there are the so called conscience oaths that allow pharmacists to deny birth coverage to unwed and young women if their religious beliefs don’t believe in birth control. Now call me naive but I think if your religious beliefs conflict with secular society’s needs, you shouldn’t be involved in something. No one is saying these people have to accept homosexuality isn’t a sin but they do have to accept that homosexuals are human beings and they refuse to do that.

Link please. Because subsection 3 of the law that this bill would have amended specifically grants the State the right to override religious objections to providing either emergency medical treatment or enforcement of the law.

(3) Government may substantially burden a person’s exercise of religion only if it demonstrates that application of the burden to the person is both:
(a) Essential to further a compelling governmental interest;
(b) The least restrictive means of furthering that compelling governmental interest.

In fact, the only thing this bill actually did was make a change to subsection 4.

(4) A person whose religious exercise of religion is burdened in violation of this section may assert that violation as a claim or defense in a judicial proceeding and obtain appropriate relief against a government or against any person relying upon any government action, enactment or law that burdens a person’s exercise of religion. A party who prevails in any action to enforce this chapter against a government shall recover attorney’s fees and costs.

The bolded parts are the changes to subsection 4.

In no way did this bill allow for any individual or organization to refuse emergency medical care or law enforcement responsibilities.

That said, it was still a blatant attempt to shield religious based bigotry from anti-discrimination laws and deserved to die the death that it did.

The bit with the wedding cake reminds of how people confuse the religious sacrament of marriage (which any church may refuse based on religious beliefs) and the secular institution of marriage (which cannot be denied by law based on race, color, creed or gender)

There was a time when the two were identical, but a Justice of the Peace who tries to deny one on moral/religious grounds should just quit his or her job and go become a pastor in a church that does not perform gay weddings.

The bit with the wedding cake reminds of how people confuse the religious sacrament of marriage (which any church may refuse based on religious beliefs) and the secular institution of marriage (which cannot be denied by law based on race, color, creed or gender)

There was a time when the two were identical, but a Justice of the Peace who tries to deny one on moral/religious grounds should just quit his or her job and go become a pastor in a church that does not perform gay weddings.

Section 3 puts the burden of proof on the government in asserting both its compelling interest and least restrictive means in carrying it out. I agree that it probably covers emergency care, but cops in particular could probably argue against investigating certain non-emergency responses / complaints or carrying out certain duties. For example a sherrif might plausibly refuse to carry out an eviction for a gay landlord against a Christian tenant and use the law as cover in the resulting civil rights lawsuit.

Kosher style perhaps. One that claims to have food that would normally be found in a kosher restaurant, but it can’t be kosher because they’re serving non-kosher food (BLT, ham on swiss), or are mixing meat and dairy products (like a Reuben).

But those wouldn’t be found in a kosher restaurant.

For instance, Katz’s deli in NYC could be considered kosher style, because it provides typical kosher deli fare like pastrami, corned beef, etc., but they’re not kosher because they have all the cheese products.

Well it shows why your party deserves the contempt it gets from people like me if its frontrunner is going after the Democratic frontrunner by bringing up an affair that her husband had when many first time votes in the next election were infants. We usually include mustard in our annual farm planting.
One year we planted way more than usual of a particularly “warm” variety that I dubbed “The Afterburner” because the greens tasted like normal mustard greens but then about 10 seconds later…YOWSER!
Anyway, that’s the only time I tried my hand at making homemade mustard. It turned out great (Afterburner x10). But gathering and processing the seeds to make the mustard took way too much effort for such a small resulting product.
Now that I’m semi-retired, I just might try that again.
Oh, and I also grow horseradish. You haven’t lived until you try making your own fresh horseradish sauce (Pro Tip: wear gloves and full face protection)

I use a combination of driving and mass transit. 20 minutes to the station (about 17 miles), and 20 minutes to the office on the train plus a 5 block walk. It’s about 25 miles door to door and if I drive it on a low-traffic day I can get to work in a half hour.

Like Gunstar, my road is mostly two lanes…but I can’t argue with the view.

Typically about an hour each way by walk-NJ Transit-PATH(WTC)- walk. Distance wise, it’s about 25 miles. Driving that could take anywhere from 40 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Much more scenic to take the train though, at least through the Meadowlands.

We usually include mustard in our annual farm planting.
One year we planted way more than usual of a particularly “warm” variety that I dubbed “The Afterburner” because the greens tasted like normal mustard greens but then about 10 seconds later…YOWSER!
Anyway, that’s the only time I tried my hand at making homemade mustard. It turned out great (Afterburner x10). But gathering and processing the seeds to make the mustard took way too much effort for such a small resulting product.
Now that I’m semi-retired, I just might try that again.
Oh, and I also grow horseradish. You haven’t lived until you try making your own fresh horseradish sauce (Pro Tip: wear gloves and full face protection)

I planted dill last year and am going to increase the crop this year. I like it with fish and also got and used dill seed as well as a spice on a few things.

And also found a recipe for a nice sauce for topping salmon with:
Freshly minced dill; 2 tsp Dijon mustard; 1/4 sour cream or yogurt; squirt of fresh lemon juice. Stir together and then refrigerate for 1-2 hours before serving.

Michael Adebolajo has been given a whole-life term and Michael Adebowale has been jailed for a minimum of 45 years for murdering Fusilier Lee Rigby.

Everyone got their food stamps cut last fall because the additional temporary benefits were not extended. Furthermore, many states have cut out the heating aid program, like NC, which cut it 3 yrs ago and put it on a “first come first served” basis because it only allocates a small amt of money. Depends, work from home a couple days a week the rest I am going to client sites, which can be anywhere from 30-50 miles one way. Truthfully most of my clients being in boston are closer to the 50 mile number and depending on traffic it can take anywhere from 1-3 hours each way, on a normal day it is about one and a half.

Just cleaned the microwave (I think stuff was starting to grow in there).
Husband usually has that chore but hasn’t addressed the problem in ages.
So, despite my resolve to wait him out until it was really disgusting, instead of merely disgusting, I went ahead and cleaned the darned thing.
Half a squeezed lemon with the rind dumped in as well into a large soup bowl with a cup of water. Three minutes on high, let it steam unmolested for five or so more minutes.
Half a dozen paper towels later (ok, maybe a dozen, the microwave is big enough for a whole turkey), the cleaness is blinding.
Easy peasy.

Used the other half of the lemon with some kosher salt to scrub clean my wooden pizza peel that I use for making artisan bread.

My work today is done…

The irony is thick here:

What would O’Keefe know about corruption and media practices? Oh wait, lying, engaging in criminal activities, and misleading videos.

But the underlying story about how a Democratic party group in Texas is being investigated? It’s on multiple news sites, but O’Keefe’s trying to claim that the AP is biased by not running it nationally.

His argument is that since Democrats have decided to make Wendy Davis the focus that the media should be reporting on the investigation, and O’Keefe’s got video that he purports to show potentially criminal acts. That led to complaints being filed with state officials, who’ve thus far passed the buck by recusing themselves because they’re also on the ballot:

Pierce said the initial complaints were filed after a conservative activist group produced a video that purports to show a Battleground organizer talking about transcribing phone numbers off of voter registration cards. James O’Keefe, whose group Project Veritas made the video, alleges that transcribing the phone numbers off the registration cards is illegal.

Project Veritas uses hidden cameras to film Democratic Party and liberal politicians and activists. The videos are heavily edited and some in the past have misrepresented the actions of the people in them.

Republican Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said he believed there was enough evidence for a criminal prosecution.

“It appears that representatives of Battleground Texas were either official registrars who misused personal voter information, or they unlawfully posed as official voter registrars to trick people into handing over personal information,” Dewhurst said in a statement. “The seriousness of this issue merits immediate referral to the Attorney General’s office.”

Gee, why would AP be reluctant to move on this? Probably because there’s a nothingburger there because O’Keefe’s been proven to product fraudulent videos that are heavily edited to produce a predetermined outcome for his purposes.

Would be more interesting to see the unedited video to know whether there’s anything there. On its face, it appears to be another smear job courtesy of O’Keefe.

When I do opt for mustard on my corned beef, pastrami, or any meat in tube form, it’s spicy brown, dammit.

Heinz preferred; Gulden’s acceptable; I beg for more options, Lizardim.
