In Which Glenn Greenwald’s Friend Mona Holland Equates Me to a Neo-Nazi in Prison for Trying to Murder a Judge

And repeats “NOTORIOUS HATE SITE” over and over like a parrot on crack
Weird • Views: 27,146

It would seem that this post from yesterday found its mark: If You Read Down to Paragraph 18, You Discover That Glenn Greenwald’s Latest Article Has No Evidence.

The festivities were kicked off this morning by the Mighty Greenwald himself, who called out his legions to attack with a couple of provocative tweets:

He’s linking to one of Gawker’s typical smear jobs (complete with crappy low res video screen grab) — written five years ago. BREAKING NEWS! For some odd reason that I’m pretty sure is related to my article, Greenwald went out of his way to find something vicious to post about me. It’s a pretty sleazy way to dodge out of dealing with the substantive criticisms in my post, but there you have it.

These tweets led to a predictable chorus of Greenwald personality cultists who are mostly in my TweetDeck global filter now (some people there’s just no point in even reading), so I thankfully missed most of the wharrgarbl until Greenwald’s long-time defender and sometime associate Mona Holland decided to directly equate me to Matthew Hale, the neo-Nazi who was once defended (pro bono) by Glenn Greenwald, and is now serving a 40-year prison term for conspiring to murder a federal judge.

So, that happened today.

UPDATE at 2/26/14 3:02:48 pm

Since Matt Hale has been brought up, we should mention that as Hale’s lawyer, Glenn Greenwald’s conduct was found to be unethical and deceitful after he recorded conversations with witnesses without telling them. Savor the irony of that, given Greenwald’s current crusade against intelligence services.

Here’s the judge’s opinion: ANDERSON v. HALE | Leagle.com.

Defendants’ counsel recorded telephone conversations with various third party witnesses, without disclosing to those witnesses that they were being recorded. Counsel and his tape-recorder were both in New York. The witnesses, at least some of them, called from Illinois. Plaintiff moved to compel disclosure of these tapes, arguing that this conduct was unethical and therefore vitiated any attorney workproduct privilege that may have attached to these recordings, and sought a protective order prohibiting any further recordings. The magistrate judge granted both motions, finding defense counsel’s conduct unethical under two separate rules: Local Rule 83.58.4(a)(4), prohibiting “dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation;” and Local Rule 83.54.4, stating “a lawyer shall not … use methods of obtaining evidence that violate the legal rights of [another] person.”

I read that Gawker piece after you linked to GG’s tweet, and it was almost incoherent. I had no idea you had “acolytes” either. And hard to believe that was five years ago. (edit: meaning “damn, time flies”)

“Quite revealing of what?”, you might ask. Well, any dark fantasy with which you choose to fill the blank.

She was cornered. Also, she had used up her daily quota of use of the term ‘notorious hate site’ by that time.

Somewhere in high school and college we need to have weekly mandatory sessions on the subject of why you shouldn’t resort to hyperbole in every fucking argument. With special bi-weekly topics that include, who is and who isn’t comparable to Nazis, murderers, and rapists.

31 Charles Johnson  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 3:17:28pm

And again, I totally reject the idea that LGF was ever a “hate site.” That’s complete bullshit. Yes, there were extreme commenters, but what they don’t tell you when they pick out comments is that the worst ones were often banned and their comments deleted.

This was not a hate site. When I became aware of hateful comments they were dealt with. As the software improved, I got much better at dealing with it, with help from our much-appreciated monitor lizards.

By comparison to the current right wing blogosphere’s comments, LGF’s were tame. These days you’ll find open racism, homophobia and every kind of bigotry everywhere, and nobody’s getting banned for it.

32 Charles Johnson  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 3:19:20pm

In fact, I often see absolutely horrific anti-Muslim comments posted at Breitbart, Gateway Pundit, etc. that go FAR beyond anything that would have ever been allowed here. People were instantly banned for some of the stuff that’s commonplace these days on the right wing blogs.

36 jaunte  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 3:24:06pm
37 iossarian  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 3:24:27pm

One thing I will say about the whole “hate site” thing is that it’s an accusation that has to be considered in the context of evolving ideas of the fundamental nature of what it means to post something on the internet.

I happen to think (hope?) that in a few years’ time, people will have a radically different view of what it means to put something online, which essentially derives from: if you put it online, it’s there forever and everyone can always see it, without necessarily being aware of the surrounding context that accompanied it at the time of posting.

The fact is that we can probably *all* think of things we’ve posted that have been hateful. I certainly can. Some of them I regret, some I think are justified through humor or context, but they could be interpreted very differently out of that context.

One of the reasons I joined LGF in the first place was that I disagreed with a lot of the content, both “above the line” and (especially) below it. But was it a hate site? I like to think I would not have joined if it was.

wiksterpedia article sees it this way

Hate speech is, outside the law, speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of e.g. race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group. The law may identify a protected individual or a protected group by certain characteristics. In some countries, a victim of hate speech may seek redress under civil law, criminal law, or both. A website that uses hate speech is called a hate site. Most of these sites contain Internet forums and news briefs that emphasize a particular viewpoint

49 goddamnedfrank  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 3:49:48pm

This is interesting:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Hispanic National Bar Association on Wednesday said it cancelled its 2015 convention in Phoenix over legislation adding protections for people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays.

Politically this could be kind of a big deal, indicating the beginnings of real camaraderie and formal alliance between Hispanic and gay organizations. At the very least it demonstrates a sense of shared self interest, a willingness to begin treating an attack on one group as an attack on both.

If I were a national GOP official this would scare the crap out of me, especially because the bill hasn’t even been signed into law and probably never will. Mere passage combined with Brewer’s cynical delay in vetoing has been by itself enough to bring about this result.

I dug out the hazmat suit and hip waders to go see how the Freepers are reacting to the Texas ruling on gay marriage. You can set your watch by their derp:

Why does Texas have to listen to a Federal Judge?

There is no such thing as gay marriage. There is a nationwide movement by liberals and other freaks to redefine a word. But there is no such thing as gay “marriage”.

Is it illegal to horse whip a judge in Texas? Maybe not horse whip, but beat some sense into him, her or it?

Our constitution is being usurped each and every damn day! This president, and all the damn libs in San Antonio need to be arrested

Did they rule on polygamy, incest or plural marriage? Why not? There are no rules when there is no standard. All “marriages” are equal. Right? Otherwise, the court is denying “rights”, right?

Texas needs to secede. This is tyranny, top down. I will gladly come to Texas and join secessionist forces. We do not need to remain beholden to the Barack Stalin thugs.

Texas sends more in taxes to the fed.gov than it receives.

We have more than enough income from oil and gas than we need (and it is expanding at a rapid rate and will continue to do so for quite a while).

We have ample agriculture, so we can feed ourselves…plus we have a bunch of fishing off the coast and in our many lakes.

We certainly can defend ourselves - the federal equipment that our taxes paid for would be perfectly adequate. We can build nukes at the Pantex plant, rockets to sit them on in Houston, and have at least 50 million guns (and people who know how to use them).

We can thus feed and take care of ourselves, and have shown an ability to do just that for well over 175 years. Frankly, I don’t know why we remain in the decaying and disintegrating Union. I’m sure that several of the surrounding states would join us - heck, we’d make a pretty good-sized country, one with traditional American values that would prosper and grow mighty, while Lieberal-land on the coasts and the upper Midwest would continue to sink into the muck and mire.

Texas should secede if it intends to remain American.

“The problem is these liberal local judges and court clerks WILL defy the Governor or AG and issue these licenses.”

Even so, that would only occur in the few Democratic cities in Texas.

Maybe Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, but that would be about it.

And so…

The Texas voters will provide a resolution for the next cycle that says

the Federal Court decision is OF NO EFFECT in the State of Texas according to the voice of the people.

Damn. Who do we have to draft this resolution?

Yep. There is no more “united states”. There is now one state with one set of laws. I still contend the only solution is to go our own way.

I contend that if we go our own way, that they will come and take it back by any means necessary.

The only solution is a complete cleansing of all government and a reset.

What is the rational basis then, to prohibit polygamy, bestiality?

Do you know the beastiality laws now are not based on morality? Only animal cruelty. If you are kind to your dog why can’t you marry it?

What these fuckwits fail to understand is that while Texas was independent, they were in constant danger of being re-annexed by Mexico, since Mexico never accepted their independence. There were also border disputes and armed conflicts the entire time. It wasn’t an idyllic paradise.

These days, if Texas seceded and the US government left, our biggest immediate problem would be the cartels, not the Mexican government.

GOV. BREWER TO MAKE STATEMENT ON SB 1062; WATCH LIVE AT 5:45

In about 25 minutes.

“i strongly support our right as americans to discriminate against people because of our religious prejudices. but some people in this country insist on making a big fuss about it, and even threaten to fail to spend their bucks here if we assert our god given right to hate. well, i’ll continue to support the right of arizonians to hate whomever they choose, but not at the expense of the vital flow of bucks from dog-marrying communists who have somehow managed to get aholt of a bunch of them. bucks i mean. thank you”

91 Justanotherhuman  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 4:37:19pm

Gawd, can these people get any worse? The comments say, “yes”.

92 Blue Fielder  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 4:37:40pm

Would it be out of line to drop her an @ along the lines of “Newsflash, honey: He’s never going to love you. He’s gay. And taken.”?

93 Swift2991  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 4:39:42pm

I think this is one big warning signal: if somebody writes this about you that sounds and looks like this, they’re out of ammo and you freaked them out.

I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t always thought well of LGF, dating back to the Dan Rather business. But I do think what you showed was evidence-based, not ideological.

I don’t care how you evolved, but rejecting the Republican Party for its racism seems right to me.

Greenwald is a sneak, a cheat and a Malvolio, if you want to make a Shakespearean connection. He doesn’t argue, he aims at the jugular to rally his buddies into more attacks. Left right or in the middle, that’s not the kind of politics or journalism I want.

Probably. You’re attacking the messenger and not the message there.

The “right” to discriminate.
The “right” to force religion on others.
The “right” to control others based on your beliefs.

Funny how much these folks talk about rights and yet never actually give a shit about actual rights.

Brewer originally said she wasn’t going to make a decision until Friday, which is what polls do when they want to minimize fallout. Could it be that the Hispanic National Bar Association announcement scared her into early action?

She’s term-limited. She’s leaving office in January.

By Arizona law, she could run again in four years, but I doubt she will.

This is the part that I will never understand about these bigots. U.S. currency isn’t gay or straight, black or white or hispanic or asian or muslim or jewish or pastafarian. It all spends the same and buys the same amount of goods and services, stocks, bonds, whatever.

I find it ironic that she seems to think the FBI’s interest in a private citizen is good evidence of guilt.

158 philosophus invidius  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 6:01:15pm

I also find it ironic that a lawyer would think that it is obvious that when a judge says his ruling against Greenwald should not be construed as “an indictment as an unethical person” that this means that the judge is ruling that Greenwald is not unethical.

159 philosophus invidius  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 6:05:22pm

Further irony from the judge’s opinion:

Defendants also argue that modern technology and norms make the 1974 ABA opinion obsolete. The fact that recording conversations is much simpler and more pervasive now does not make it proper. If anything, it makes the need for this rule more compelling.

I’d never heard of Glenn Greenwald before the Snowden affair and its coverage in LGF. GG impresses me as a very angry man prone to sweeping and unfounded generalizations. I’m often struck by how mean-spirited his tweets are. Anyway, some LGF readers may enjoy this takedown of GG by Sam Harris.

I know Mr. Harris is controversial here at LGF. I myself have barely begun to read him. But whatever you think of Mr. Harris, you may enjoy his comments about GG. He invested a lot of time and energy, perhaps as a public service, and makes GG look very bad indeed.
