Breaking: AZ Gov. Jan Brewer Vetoes Anti-Gay “Religious Freedom” Bill

When even Jan Brewer thinks you’ve gone too far…
US News • Views: 22,715

Minutes ago, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed the SB1062 “religious freedom” pro-bigotry bill, pretending it was an act of principle instead of a result of the huge backlash.

That distant popping sound you hear is right wing heads exploding all over the Internets.

UPDATE at 2/26/14 5:28:23 pm

We have an early whine from Ben “Friends of Hamas” Shapiro:

And Todd Starnes being the moron he is thinks this makes Christians second class citizens. I guess Todd’s totally unaware that there are not only gay friendly Christians out there but also gay Christians themselves who would have been hurt by this law. But nah Todd just has to think that every Christian is as bigoted as his sorry wingnut ass.

4 Targetpractice  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 5:00:03pm

I’d say Brewer just destroyed whatever support she had left amongst wingnuts, but she burned that bridge awhile back by taking up the fight to expand Medicaid in AZ.

Yeah how dare you point out that Brewer rightfully got pressure from the business interests that run her party on this. I am glad she vetoed it but she’s no hero. She should have threatened to veto it from the start.

This is the part that I will never understand about these bigots. U.S. currency isn’t gay or straight, black or white or hispanic or asian or muslim or jewish or pastafarian. It all spends the same and buys the same amount of goods and services, stocks, bonds, whatever.

Yeah Egg, you can go ahead and stuff it. She pretty much said out loud at the conference that the big concern on her mind is the economic consequences of signing this bill, namely the boycotts that AZ would be subject to.

It’s why it’s patently absurd to say vetoing this discriminates against people. Hell if anything, any good capitalist should be happy that this was vetoed but then against wingnuts understand capitalism about as well as they do socialism and marxism which is to say not a damn bit.

Would that it stopped there. But it won’t, several other states are already looking at versions of the same bill. One or more will pass it, and then it’s off to the races.

Speculation from last thread. The announcement from the Hispanic National Bar Association may have scarred Brewer into acting earlier than she’d originally intended.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Hispanic National Bar Association on Wednesday said it cancelled its 2015 convention in Phoenix over legislation adding protections for people who assert their religious beliefs in refusing service to gays.

This is unprecedented, no? -> An unambiguous message of alliance by a major national Hispanic org on the issue of gay rights.

While I appreciate Jan Brewer doing the right thing, even if its for the wrong reasons here is a conservative who understands why allowing same-sex marriage is the right thing to do:

Creating and maintaining strong nuclear families is clearly in society’s best interests, but defining and enforcing it by government mandate is not. We need to face the fact that freedom can be messy and uncomfortable without being ruinous. This ruling did not cover performance of same sex marriages in Kentucky, only the recognition of those performed elsewhere. But the next ruling will surely address that. Supporting traditional marriage is still a right, it’s just not something we can resolve with the force of law. Protecting freedoms must be the focus of legal efforts and to the extent that it is, social issues such as this can be dealt with in ways that make us stronger. That is our real challenge going forward.

25 HappyWarrior  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 5:10:24pm

Glad she vetoed it for obvious reasons but also because the wingnut loud anger from the veto shows how pathetically out of touch they are.

26 Lidane  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 5:11:16pm

Right on cue, the Freepers are outraged:

RINO HOMOSEXUALIST.
Time to boycott Arizona.

Jan Brewer will go down as a spineless homosexual ganglia. What a joke she was. They will not TRUMP GOD. Leviticus tells us what to do in the face of abomination.

God is in charge, I’m not worried, just pissed!

Brewer shows that she opposes the First Amendment in her veto of this bill. The next stage of this slippery slope is to force a God-fearing doctor to perform an abortion. The bill was a stand for freedom and liberty and was based upon the Eternal, Inerrant Word of God.

I guess Religious people of all faiths just need to get over their religious beliefs. Gays have all rights…..nobody else has any.

Absolutely pathetic.

What Brewer doesn’t realize that is it is never enough with these people. Already, they’re plotting and scheming to force AZ churches to recognize homosexual weddings.
And I’m done with the NFL. They can go piss up a rope.

When 3 percent of the population has more power than the 97 percent of us, that is when you know America has gone to hell in a hand basket

All you little people must make cakes for homosexuals, or else you will be shipped to the concentration camp… where you will make cakes for homosexuals.

At a point in time, probably within the next three years, the state will begin killing Christians. This was predicted by the Lord 2000 years ago. So it is not a surprise or problem…
…Then again, those killing Christians might have a problem in the U.S.

Just sayin’.

Too bad all those states that want to control women’s reproduction by passing vaginal probe legislation already have the business community on their side because it makes money.

If Apple, the NFL, MLB and assorted other companies stood up against those laws as strongly as they did this one, I imagine tunes would change. Since most of those companies and leagues are run by old white men, I’m less than optimistic.

34 freetoken  Wed, Feb 26, 2014 5:15:32pm

What the religious right still does not own, about the US Constitution and the laws of the US, is that commerce is done in the public sphere. This is different than our private lives and private organizations (e.g., “associations”.)

Again, SB1062 was trying to force a type of special treatment among the public sphere. This is the same issue that came up with the ACA, where the anti-ACA folk did not understand or simply did not want to understand the the US government can (and even must) manage the public sphere of our lives. The Chief Justice knew that about the ACA (which as he noted was a tax, no matter how elaborately constructed the collection scheme.)

Can we move on? How many other states are pursuing the same anti-gay discrimination legislation? More than just Arizona was busy attempting to legalize discrimination against gays in the name of “religious freedom”. Except religion doesn’t legitimize discrimination. And government actions supporting discrimination would be struck down as unconstitutional.

MEChA:

Chicanismo is the bond experienced by all members of M.E.Ch.A. Chicanismo is carnalismo: the responsibility and commitment to all Chican@ brothers and sisters throughout the university and community regardless of their age, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or nationality. Chicanismo further implies having respect for Chican@ history, Chican@ culture and values. Therefore, the term Chican@ is grounded in a philosophy not nationality. To be Chican@ is not a birthright, rather it is a state of mind.

Tesla: four states vie for 6,500-worker ‘Gigafactory’

Tesla says that Nevada, Arizona, Texas and New Mexico are all finalists for the plant, which would be powered largely by wind and solar energy. It would occupy up to 1,000 acres and start producing by 2017.

Leaning a bit towards red states. There might be a reason for that.
UAW plans to keep trying on Tesla workers’ representation

Tesla’s factory used to be a union shop when it was run as a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota Motor Co. It closed in 2010 and was bought by Tesla several months later.

Musk has said several times that he will remain neutral on unions. But in its annual report to shareholders, Tesla has described the possibility of unionization as a risk to its business.

Labels are more important than realities. If one democrat does something bad it means that all democrats forever share his sin. It’s the nonsense thinking behind declaring all liberals marxist fascist communist socialist islamo-seculars. Basically apply as many bad sounding words to the enemy as you can under flimsy pretext of slight similarities (i.e. Communists and U.S. liberals both believe the state has a role to play in society, but that what that role is differs quite a bit.) and you can then tie that enemy to all atrocities and wrongdoing done by any group associated with the word.

Died yesterday at age 66 of heart disease.

Lumumba is remembered as a civil rights and human rights leader.

usatoday.com

Jackson (Miss.) Mayor Chokwe Lumumba, a longtime civil rights activist, died Tuesday afternoon at a hospital after experiencing chest pains.

(snip)

The national civil rights community took note when Lumumba became mayor last year of Mississippi’s capital city — a place that had seen its share of violence during the civil rights movement. Lumumba, a black nationalist, had worked with mainstream and leftist figures in the civil rights world.

(snip)

“The native of Detroit was born Edwin Taliaferro and graduated cum laude from Wayne State University Law School. He renamed himself after Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese independence leader, and the Chokwe, an Angolan tribe.”

Much more likely is that they try sneaking in this language into another bill later in the legislative session with the modified language in the hopes no one will notice.

The thing that upsets me most and I am not even religious is when they claim that opposing such legislation is anti-Christian. Yeah because there’s no such thing as pro-gay Christians or gay Christians who would be adversely hurt by such legislation. And not to mention that they only seem to care about how it effects Christians. Like they just want Christians to be able to discriminate free at will. They’d flip their shit if a Jewish or Muslim owner refused to serve a Christian but they’re totally okay with a Christian refusing to serve a gay.

-You can refuse service for conduct, such as drunk and disorderly, must be objectively identifiable, consistent standard.
-You can refuse service to people who’ve robbed you or vandalized your property, again this is specific, objectively objectionable conduct.
-You can refuse service based on dress code, if reasonable and applied equally.
-You can refuse service to everyone, equally, by closing early.
-You can refuse service to the public by simply not being open to it, by only serving certain licensed professionals, such as electrical contractors or law enforcement. But the criteria must be clear and based on objectively defensible business practices. It cannot be subjective, it cannot be rooted in bigotry or religion.

If your business is open to the public the one thing you cannot do is pick and chooose, parsing that public, refusing service based on perceived status or class. You cannot single out blacks, jews, gays, or redheads.

You are not allowed to do this because your license to do business is provided by the State, which has an obligation to make sure everyone has equal protection of the laws. Your business benefits from public roads and infrastructure, you depend on public law enforcement for dispute resolution and protection, on public fire departments for safety. You can’t subjectively ban only certain elements of the public, because all those elements helped make the environment conducive to the success of your business. It would be fundamentally unfair to demand that gays help pay for roads that you benefit from if you won’t serve them. It would be fundamentally unfair to ask them to help pay for the services of the police that then enforces your bigotry against them.

If you want to be a bigot, do it privately, in your own home. Nobody will force you to associate against your will there, no matter how dickish your will may be. When you open a business to the public you’re surrendering a certain amount of control over what that public looks like in exchange for the numerous benefits that same public provides to you.

I believe so strongly that guys deserve equal options in controlling their reproductive capabilities; having both partners be involved and capable would do a lot, I think. Yes, condoms are great and should still be used in a lot of casual situations, but in a committed relationship it would be nice for other options to be available.

Especially since the failure rate on condoms is such that …well, I’m never going to be willing to rely on just that.

Additionally, civil rights laws help protect business owners in regions characterized by endemic bigotry. Restauranteurs and hoteliers operating in the pre Civil Rights Era South refused service to blacks for one of two obvious reasons. Either they were bigots themselves, or they knew that the whites in their area were so bigoted that they would retaliate against individual businesses choosing to integrate.

Civil rights laws ended that, and allowed business to gain a whole new class of clientele without having to stick their necks out and suffer the likely boycott and potentially violent consequences of having chosen to serve blacks. So instead society changed from the top down via mandate, took the choice away because it had to, and everyone benefited.

Quoted again for truth. Even though I’m approaching the point where the non-reversible option is probably what I should go with, I also remember when I was much younger, and the only real option a guy had/has was/is the condom. I’d use a patch, or get a shot. No big deal.

so a Portland newspaper got to wondering; if a baker’s “sincere religious beliefs” keep her from making a cake for a lesbian wedding… how does the same bakery respond to other unChristian cake requests?

Baby Out of Wedlock
WW Asks - I’m shopping around for a nice baby shower cake for my friend. It’s her second baby with her boyfriend so I’m not looking for anything too big or fancy—probably enough to serve 15 to 20 people.

Divorce Party
WW Asks - My friend is getting divorced and we’d like to throw her a little party to mark the start of her new life. Do you ever write messages on those—we’d want it to say “congratulations!”—and how much would it be for a cake that could serve about eight people?

Stem-Cell Success
WW Asks - I was wondering if you could do two little cakes. My friend is a researcher at OHSU and she just got a grant for cloning human stem cells, so I thought I’d get her two identical cakes—basically, two little clone cakes. How much would they cost?

Pagan Solstice Party
WW Asks - I was calling to get a quote on a cake for a midsummer solstice party. My coven is celebrating on Friday, June 21. The decoration would be very simple: just a green pentagram. We’d like to pick it up sometime that afternoon, before the bonfire. It’ll be for about 30 people.

Surprise, surprise… got quotes for all the them, no problem.

The freepers are falling on the floor, foaming at the mouth, and turning purple and red in rage, pain, and confusion. It is a joy to behold, the purest, brightest schadenfreude we have had in a long time. (Am I a bad person for enjoying their misery?)

That’s the entire appeal of being a Freeper. Just read Head Freeper RimJob’s pronouncements at the start of every begathon. Fear and Loathing and Homosexualists and They’re Coming For Our Guns and Women.

The guy pulls in $340,000 a year with this shit.

I’m struck at how much this whole Ukraine flare-up is very much about old ethnic conflicts, frosted over with much more modern strategic geo-political goals.

I could see the episode: They’re given two taxis and told to make a stretch taxi out of it. They would cut the trunks off, attach the remaining pieces, and then spend the entire rest of the episode trying to reverse the rear transmission so that both engines could be used to drive the car.

Right on cue, the Freepers are outraged:

Still outraged, still derping. From the same thread:

She was pressured out of it.

The left has more political clout than us. That’s why EVERY SINGLE PIECE of their agenda is being pushed through.

Sucks that we have to push through laws to reaffirm what’s already in the Constitution.

Hugh Hewitt was just talking to an Arizona conservative activist and he was very concerned to make sure that no one would think that he is ‘homophobic’.

No, Hugh, those of us unfortunate enough to subject ourselves to your phony ‘conservatism’ would never accuse you of being homophobic. That’s an honor you don’t deserve.

Gutless coward. Let the persecution of Christians continue.

I told everyone here on Sunday there was zero chance she would sign it. The legislature needs to go back and re-write a statute that specifically carves out certain professions for protection, gain her signature, and add to it later. They were naive to just rush this out there and not think there would be a national blowback.

We are getting creamed.

The Texas overturning is worse

At least someone with standing may appeal

We have utterly collapsed overnight metaphorically

All you civil rights acts lovers here

It started right there

She bowed to the NFL thugs, and their perversion mafia whom they seem to have now embraced.

She could not stomach another battle like she went through on SB 1070 with ILLEGAL ALIENS. The GAY MAFIA is much more powerful than the ILLEGAL ALIEN supporters - must have GAY MARRIAGE.
IS ANYONE ON FR FOOLISH ENOUGH TO BELIEVE THIS IS THE END OF GAYS AND RELIGEOUS PROSECUTION? This will not end until the Bible is banned as hate speech and all ministers are shut up permanently.

Germany in the making right before our eyes, and yet we all sit around watching the NFL and cower when they threaten to move the SUPER BOWL.

As usual, Satan’s acolytes in the state-controlled media report outrage only when it’s coming from one of their radical left-wing protected class groups.

I despise these subhuman mongrels with a passion.

Well, duh. He’s ANTI-Christ! And Christ demands that I go all Torquemada on Teh Gays so the Antichrist must be Teh Gay.

That’s what we call a big old QED down here in Texas.

Where, by the way, some know-nothing Meskin Activist Judge said our law protecting the sanctity of marriage being defined as one man and one woman was unConstitutional today, despite the fact that every County in Texas, except for the People’s Republic of Travis County, voted for a Constitutional Amendment that enshrined our bigotry into law!

DULUTH, KS—Claiming it is “impossible” to get him to consider different points of view, exasperated acquaintances of local man Kyle Dunham told reporters Wednesday that the 34-year-old is completely unwilling to listen to even a single argument as to why homosexuality is an abomination.

Sources familiar with the account manager’s maddeningly rigid beliefs said that no matter how patiently and logically they present the extensive evidence demonstrating that gays and lesbians are systematically destroying society, the narrow-minded Dunham simply tunes them out.

My Republican-in-denial “independent” friend’s big objection to the ACA is that he felt Obama was forcing his morality on the American public.

Let that sink in for a minute: his objection to Obama’s morals was that the Prez was using a conservative-based plan to make sure people get access to cheaper health care.

So, no, “Tolerance as a weapon” does not surprise me in the least.
