The Mysterious “Deep Force” Behind the “Coup” in Ukraine? First Look Money Guy Pierre Omidyar

Hot libertarian on libertarian action
World • Views: 20,302

I’m making popcorn here at Lizard Headquarters, because the libertarians at PandoDaily are taking shots at the libertarians at First Look, and we’re all winners for it: Pierre Omidyar Co-Funded Ukraine Revolution Groups With US Government, Documents Show.

Just hours after last weekend’s ouster of Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, one of Pierre Omidyar’s newest hires at national security blog “The Intercept,” was already digging for the truth.

Marcy Wheeler, who is the new site’s “senior policy analyst,” speculated that the Ukraine revolution was likely a “coup” engineered by “deep forces” on behalf of “Pax Americana”:

“There’s quite a bit of evidence of coup-ness. Q is how many levels deep interference from both sides is.”

These are serious claims. So serious that I decided to investigate them. And what I found was shocking.

Wheeler is partly correct. Pando has confirmed that the American government - in the form of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) - played a major role in funding opposition groups prior to the revolution. Moreover, a large percentage of the rest of the funding to those same groups came from a US billionaire who has previously worked closely with US government agencies to further his own business interests. This was by no means a US-backed “coup,” but clear evidence shows that US investment was a force multiplier for many of the groups involved in overthrowing Yanukovych.

But that’s not the shocking part.

What’s shocking is the name of the billionaire who co-invested with the US government (or as Wheeler put it: the “dark force” acting on behalf of “Pax Americana”).

Step out of the shadows…. Wheeler’s boss, Pierre Omidyar.

BAM! That’s gotta sting. Can’t wait for the torrent of invective from the Mighty G.

That the US is going to continue to fund opposition movements to get them away from the Russian sphere of influence isn’t news, either. Or rather, it’s like, “Good, I’m glad we’re doing that, that’s good stuff.”

Seriously though, what’s the accusation?

USAID does a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with revolutions. It makes it easier for groups to communicate/organize. It supports free speech, human and civil rights.

Lots of things that most of us (and the Dudebros) would probably agree with. But now they’re going to find themselves in a rather curious position of attacking those who would support their goal.

Yeah, but to a certain subset of knuckeldraggers, Kissinger will always be in control, and the opposition supported by the US will always be Pinochet.

Greenwald:

My comment about how this is a unique and exciting opportunity wasn’t about ownership, since I have none. It was about the opportunity to help build something new and unique. What attracted me - and Laura, Jeremy, Liliana Segura, Micah Lee, Dan Froomkin and others - was the prospect that this is going to be a unique media outlet: a well-supported and uniquely structured institution that is designed from the start to encourage, support and empower - rather than undermine, dilute and neuter - independent, adversarial journalists. The whole point of how we’re structuring it is to insulate journalists from the pressures - both internal and external - that detract from their independence and ability to do fearless journalism.

The opposition we support in the Ukraine probably includes a bunch of assholes. Our own government sure does. But Russia is getting worse and worse, whereas Europe, while struggling with right-wing Austerity and anti-immigrant bullshit, is not anywhere close to Russia’s level of corrupt thuggery clad in theocratic overtones.

Far better that Ukraine be influenced by, economically bound to, and otherwise affected by the EU than by Russia. For the Ukraine, as well as for the rest of the world.

Actually, I’ve been generally impressed with Ms. Wheeler. I was and am disappointed that she joined GG’s little treehouse; it’s making me look with more caution on the items she writes.

What this situation does - in my opinion - is create the opportunity to demonstrate just how intellectually honest she is. I’ll be watching to see what she writes in the next couple of days when she breaks down what she’s learned of the ‘coup-ness’ of the situation.

If - and how much - Omidyar gets mentioned will tell me pretty much all I need to know.

It ain’t who you work for. It’s how you act when you learn they’re dirty that matters.

1. At first blush I don’t see what the big deal is. (Added: that said, we citizens should continue to exercise vigilance over what our government is doing, and whom it’s doing it with.) George Soros used to fund dissident groups behind the Iron Curtain, thereby helping to precipitate the Velvet Revolutions.

2. Yes, the USA should stand for human rights, and we should be willing, within reason, to incur a short-term penalty in realpolitik for that position. However, an ethical attitude does not exempt us from realpolitik.

3. There will always be the temptation to package realpolitik as human-rights advocacy, nor will the distinction always be clear.

4. Afaic globalization and the reduction in American chauvinism have done more good than harm, but each development is not without drawbacks. For example, it’s much easier for other countries to meddle in the US than it was say a century ago.

5. To repeat: at first blush I don’t see what the big deal is. The notion that the end of the Cold War marked the end of history has always struck me as ridiculous. History continues.

Coup to coup the coup?

48 blueraven  Fri, Feb 28, 2014 1:46:44pm
Of the many problems that poses, none is more serious than the fact that Omidyar now has the only two people with exclusive access to the complete Snowden NSA cache, Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras. Somehow, the same billionaire who co-financed the “coup” in Ukraine with USAID, also has exclusive access to the NSA secrets—and very few in the independent media dare voice a skeptical word about it.

In the larger sense, this is a problem of 21st century American inequality, of life in a billionaire-dominated era. It is a problem we all have to contend with—PandoDaily’s 18-plus investors include a gaggle of Silicon Valley billionaires like Marc Andreessen (who serves on the board of eBay, chaired by Pierre Omidyar) and Peter Thiel (whose politics I’ve investigated, and described as repugnant.)

But what is more immediately alarming is what makes Omidyar different. Unlike other billionaires, Omidyar has garnered nothing but uncritical, fawning press coverage, particularly from those he has hired. By acquiring a “dream team” of what remains of independent media — Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill, Wheeler, my former partner Matt Taibbi — not to mention press “critics” like Jay Rosen — he buys both silence and fawning press.

Heyburn has also allowed same-sex couples who want to marry in Kentucky to intervene in the case, so a decision granting that right should come down later this year.
