An Interesting Discrepancy in First Look’s Public Statements, Presented for Your Perusal

Ethics, how do they work?
Media • Views: 21,536

An interesting discrepancy, presented for your perusal. First, we have Glenn Greenwald, who is a journalist, professing his “full journalistic independence” from sole owner Pierre Omidyar in his new First Look media venture:

Greenwald goes into (much) greater depth in his written argument before the jury, but the point is the same: how dare you question his full journalistic independence?

On the other hand, we have Jeremy Scahill, one of the first First Look employees, who said this to the Daily Beast:

The whole venture will have a lower wall between owner and journalist than traditional media. Omidyar, he says, wanted to do the project because he was interested in Fourth Amendment issues, and they are hiring teams of lawyers, not just to keep the staff from getting sued, but to actively push courts on the First Amendment, to “force confrontation with the state on these issues.”

“[Omidyar] strikes me as always sort of political, but I think that the NSA story and the expanding wars put politics for him into a much more prominent place in his existence. This is not a side project that he is doing. Pierre writes more on our internal messaging than anyone else. And he is not micromanaging. This guy has a vision. And his vision is to confront what he sees as an assault on the privacy of Americans.”

That sure doesn’t sound like full journalistic independence to me.

An interesting discrepancy, presented for your perusal.

Senator Rubio’s steps are all doable without directly threatening Russia militarily and they strike me as reasonable and practical. Sending Secretaries Kerry and Hagel to Kiev to show support for the new government is a very good idea.

Stopped clock moment, because I’ll say that Rubio’s ideas are probably the best that we can get right now. Military action is pretty much right out unless Putin pushes beyond Ukraine’s borders, but tightening the clamps on Russia’s lifelines would make an invasion a very costly mistake.

Meanwhile, Scahill says The Intercept wants to do no less than re-write the relationship between journalists and the people they cover. If, for example, they were asked to hold a story because the White House or the Pentagon deemed that publication would harm national security, Scahill said, “Never.”

Good luck with that attitude developing any quality high level sources. If govt agencies know your policy is to fuck them whenever possible they’ll never feed you any intel, bypassing you for somebody they feel they can trust.

Free Marissa Now member and victim’s advocate, Sumayya Fire, stated, “Remember that this entire case boils down to a woman defending her life from her husband who attacked her, strangled her, threatened to kill her, whose beatings have sent her to the hospital and likely caused her to have premature labor. A husband who confirmed in a deposition that he beat her, that he was in a rage when he attacked her, and that he has beaten other women with whom he was involved. Remember that when Marissa Alexander fired her warning shot to save her own life, she caused no injuries. Now she’s facing the very real possibility of spending the rest of her life in prison for that act of self-defense. That should send a chill down the back of every person in this country who believes that women who are attacked have the right to defend themselves. Anyone who believes that domestic violence is unjust should be deeply shaken by Corey’s abusive prosecution of Marissa Alexander and should be advocating for Alexander’s freedom.”

Venezuela government says foes seek to slam it at Oscars

“Right-wing extremists are lobbying in Hollywood, looking for pronouncements against Venezuela at the Oscars!” Information Minister Delcy Rodriguez said on her Twitter account @DrodriguezMinci on Saturday.

“This worldwide operation to discredit our homeland is backed by a powerful media platform serving imperial interests.”

The turmoil has already drawn comment from entertainers, with singers Madonna and Cher criticizing Maduro on social media, and Venezuela’s president - a former bus driver - verbally sparring with Panamanian salsa star Ruben Blades.

State Attorney Angela Corey upgrades her pension with taxpayer dollars

Both Corey and de la Rionda make $150,076 a year. Based on their years of service, their annual pensions will be about $65,000, including the upgrade, which adds about $8,300 a year.

Corey said she began examining the idea of buying the credits in 2010 and put in the paperwork for her and de la Rionda in December 2011.
The office had the money to do so because of savings achieved over the past three years, Corey said.

“We knew we had the money in our budget,” she said. “We’ve been scrimping and saving.”

Stone, whose documentary “South of the Border” profiled Chavez and other Latin American leftist leaders, often hailed the self-styled revolutionary’s efforts to alleviate poverty.

Ah, as I thought. Movie plane, not the real “Belle”. From Wiki:

A former civilian firebomber, B-17G-85-DL, AAC Serial No. 44-83546, FAA registered N3703G, was converted into a B-17F configuration by installing a Sperry top turret, early-style tail gunner’s compartment and waist gunner’s positions, and omitting the chin turret. That aircraft subsequently appeared in the 1990 fictionalized version of the Memphis Belle story, and continues to make air show appearances in that guise. Originally painted with the Warner Brothers movie version of the nose art and markings, the B-17 (owned by David Tallichet) now carries the historic markings found on the actual Memphis Belle. That aircraft is currently leased by The Liberty Foundation and provides historical flight experiences to the public.

Still a beautiful aircraft but not the same one. IIRC, it never left the US during WWII.

Here is a Ukraine update:

There are unconfirmed reports of a large mass of Russian troops and military vehicles on the border of Russia and Ukraine, according to a Kiev-based Russian-language publication supportive of the EuroMaidan protests.

Gordonua.com, a web news site maintained by the editor of Gordon Boulevard, says they have a report from a local resident that at the border post of Senkova in Chernihiv Region, there are a lot of Russian APCs and buses with soldiers concentrated on the Russian side of the border.

Russian military are telling reporters today that they are “on a Western Front training exercise” at this location, about 190 kilometers from Kiev where the Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian borders come together. Earlier this week, 150,000 Russian troops were suddenly put on a combat readiness training. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the maneuvers were not related to events in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian border guards told Gordonua.com that they do not know what is going on, and they will act as they are ordered. “But they did let it be known that in the event of attack, they cannot withstand such a number of forces.”

There would be consequences for Russia however. For one, Ukraine has a population of 45 million. Russia is only 3 times that.

Essentially, it would be like the US attempting to take over Mexico.

Russian attempts to hold it down would only work for so long, and Russia weaker cohesively.

Yes, there population is growing, but largely on the back of minorities. Minorities who will be very willing to rise up in some cases.

So, yes, Russia could try, and probably succeed in the short term.

Long term? It will doom them.

I do admit, it looks like Germany was on the right side during Bosnia and Kosovo.

In the first case, against both the UK and France, if a book on Clinton’s Tapes are to believed:

In his book The Clinton Tapes: Wrestling History with the President from 2009, historian and author Taylor Branch, a long-time friend of former United States president Bill Clinton, made public more than 70 recorded sessions with the president during his presidency from 1993 through 2001.[54][55] According to a session taped on 14 October 1993, it is stated that:

Clinton said U.S. allies in Europe blocked proposals to adjust or remove the embargo. They justified their opposition on plausible humanitarian grounds, arguing that more arms would only fuel the bloodshed, but privately, said the president, key allies objected that an independent Bosnia would be “unnatural” as the only Muslim nation in Europe. He said they favored the embargo precisely because it locked in Bosnia’s disadvantage. [..] When I expressed shock at such cynicism, reminiscent of the blind-eye diplomacy regarding the plight of Europe’s Jews during World War II, President Clinton only shrugged. He said President François Mitterrand of France had been especially blunt in saying that Bosnia did not belong, and that British officials also spoke of a painful but realistic restoration of Christian Europe. Against Britain and France, he said, German chancellor Helmut Kohl among others had supported moves to reconsider the United Nations arms embargo, failing in part because Germany did not hold a seat on the U.N. Security Council.

Hollywood’s Best and Brightest To Be Honored With a Naked Mexican

Here’s a fun fact, compadres: the svelte, nude frame of the Oscar statue is modeled after an undocumented Mexican immigrant. Yes, American cinema’s highest honor is modeled after someone who is not an American citizen, a tidbit that is sure to make Fox News and Bill O’Reilly apoplectic.

Hollywood’s most coveted male body does not belong to Chris Evans or Chris Hemsworth. That honor goes to Emilio “El Indio” Fernández, the prolific Mexican actor, director and screenwriter who stripped down, grabbed a sword and posed for Academy Award designer Cedric Gibbons in 1928.

God don’t want no ghey:

No longer loyal to Scouts, boys join Trail Life

[…]

White wasn’t a Boy Scout growing up, but went to high school with Eagle Scouts whom he admired greatly. “From pretty much that point on, I knew I wanted my son to be a part of that,” he said. His son, now 11, joined Cub Scouts and soon shared his dad’s dream.

But the policy on gays changed that.

Sitting next to Orr during the meeting, White began to cry as he described what his son said: “I wanted to go with what God would want.”

His voice wavered.

“It made it clear that we had taught him what he needed to know,” he said.

A very clear example that bigotry is taught.

My prediction: Trail Life may get some traction among the fundie Christian homeschool crowd, but a BSA killer it ain’t and likely never will be. I lump these folks in with the other “the BSA/GSA doesn’t have enough Jesus” youth orgs such as the Royal Ambassadors and the Royal Rangers.

Under Russian flag, Kalashnikov-armed checkpoints come to Ukraine

kyivpost.com

ARMYANSK, Ukraine — On a road leading to the Crimean peninsula, a journalist woke up with a start. He was being stared at, through the window of the car he and his colleague from a TV station hired to drive to Crimea on March 1, by at least a half-dozen men armed with Kalashnikovs.

“The men wore an assortment of military uniforms, some had their faces covered with Balaklavas. Their only insignia were orange-and-black stripy St. George ribbons, a recognized military symbol in Russia that dates back to its empire days.

“Pull over and get out,” the men barked. There was no point in arguing with people so heavily armed.”

Sigh. (warning: vent, feel free to skip)
About a month ago I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I kept having chest pains, was feeling faint and it got so bad that I ended up in the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. Every test they did on me came back normal, no heart attack, no abnormal test results. So, my doctor prescribed Paxil, even though I told him I can’t take SSRIs because I have a bad reaction to them when I was given them for post partum depression 20 yrs ago. So, I had a bad reaction, surprise! And I flushed the pills. The stupid doctor tried to tell me that I was “decompensating” and needed to be in a psych ward. Interestingly enough, when I stopped taking the meds I felt better, imagine that. Seriously, just kill me now. Could it be perhaps, that telling me I don’t know my own body and medical history might make the anxiety, oh, I don’t know, worse? (insert scream here)

I made the mistake of telling friends about this. First, there was an outcry about the meds. Only from the people who apparently have been on them for years. And look, I get that some people benefit from medication. I have family members for whom SSRIs have been a lifesaver, quite literally. But, the last thing I freaking need is to be told that I should continue to stay on meds that are ripping my stomach and intestines to shreds, making my anxiety worse and incapacitating me to the point I can’t get out of bed, let alone drive or function. Telling me I have to tough that out for a month or more and “put on my big girl panties” is probably going to piss me off, just sayin’. My son was home from school during part of this and it scared the shit out of him, which was a key reason I flushed those freaking pills. The idea that there was no way for me to get better without the pills freaks me out way more than the anxiety does. And again, I get that some people do really well on these medications, but I don’t.

Then there is this fucking obsession people seem to have with “positive thinking” and “attraction theory” (ala that freaking book The Gift) that makes me want to positively hit someone with a shovel. If one more person tells me that I just need to Try Harder to be Happy I am going to happily put a foot in their ass. Try Harder? Are you fucking kidding me? I have spent 20 years being a full time mom/autism advocate/occupational therapist/speech therapist/tutor/guidance councilor/this is by no means a complete list and doesn’t include all the other things I do in a day, and you’re telling me to try harder to be positive every fucking minute my eyes are open? REALLY? Like I have ever had the option to just throw the covers over my head and quit? I swear to god, this bullshit idea that you’re never allowed to have a hard time or ever talk about it when you do and you have to plaster a fake smile on your face and pretend to be happy when you aren’t is such bullshit I want to scream. And Facebook makes this worse. If I see one more post about shitting all over people who are suffering and cutting them out of your life so your life can be more pretty I am going to go postal on someone. Thus proving their point I suppose, but what in the ever loving fuck is wrong with people?

I know some people are addicted to feeling sorry for themselves and never have anything positive to add. I am not one of those people. But is it really wrong to want to talk to your friends when you’re struggling? Does it ever really occur to people that the last thing an anxious and depressed person needs to hear is that they have to put on their big girl panties and try harder when that’s all they’ve ever done? I’m starting to think that the best thing I could do is be BFFs with my dog and tell everyone else to kiss my ass.

re: #154 A Mom Anon

I hear you loud and clear, and I’m asking you to hang in there and try to keep your head as clear as possible, without a lot of medication. That sounds like a tall order, but keep looking for that therapist who you will be able to explain your situation to, and who won’t be so quick to put you on meds. You need someone to talk to, who will be able to give you good advice, and sometimes, just a shoulder to let all that grief out.

I went through something very similiar starting about 20 yrs ago, in my 50s. My intelligence, my work ethic, everything I had managed to build up over years was challenged by the lie of a young atty with whom I worked (the boys’ club trusted him more) and of course, his lie was accepted while I was kicked to the curb, depriving me of a decent living. I was able to hang on to my house a bit longer, but having to take lesser jobs when I could get one, eventually working in a grocery deli. I had everything hanging over my head leading to a “nervous breakdown” and I was heavily (I mean lithium quality zombie style) medicated. I finally lost my house, had to store my goods and moved in with my son up here in 1999 which turned out to be the best of my decisions. Not just that, but any “friends” I thought I had long disappeared with the wind—I had absolutely no one who understood what was going on and frankly didn’t care. I was persona non grata.

Everything I was going through was based primarily on economic survival and the realization that in spite of their talk, no one but my immediate family actually gave a shit about what happened to us (that was a horrible revelation in the long run). No one wanted to have to deal with a “crazy woman” who interfered with their own little world. I had finally made it to the “middle class” after raising 2 sons by myself without help of any kind whatsoever (and I mean no help—from child support onward) with the exception of an aunt who really didn’t have the means herself but who had provided me with love—and she was gone by then, which was another thing—dealing with her death and her husband’s at the same time. So there was a lot of “death” in my life at that time—physical, economic, social—thrust at me.

Once I moved out of that all too familiar milieu and accepted that things would never be as they were, I was fine. Three mos after I moved here and after 3 yrs of “therapy” which was mostly meds, I was off the Zoloft (I eventually was able to get off Lithium, Risperdal, Prozac, etc, all of it by myself). I realized that I had been diagnosed with a serious mental disease which I absolutely didn’t have—bipolar disorder, not simple clinical depression brought on by my life circumstances, and all that medication was making me incapable of doing anything, even making decisions for myself. I was, for all intents and purposes, a zombie.

The “things” I had worked so hard for, bringing myself up from an impoverished childhood, were no longer important—they were gone, but I still had my sons, my grandkids, myself. I have adjusted, and have rebuilt my life and it is good. It wasn’t easy, but it was an adventure and I made games from a lot of it. Life has been pretty damned good for the last 15 yrs.

You will be able to do this. You may lose “stuff” but you will regain your dignity, your life, and the ones who love you will still be there.

162 Justanotherhuman  Sun, Mar 2, 2014 4:55:48am

So let me get this straight—Ukraine gets rid of its corrupt Russian puppets, strives to make it as an independent nation, and is immediately invaded by Russia, of which Ukraine does wish to be a satellite. And some people think this is OK?

Also—you lose friends because you’re having problems of some sort, maybe losing “stuff”, making you a social pariah, and no one wants to hear about it because it might be like some kind of virus, so they cut you off because of “negative vibes” or something that interferes with their idyllic version of reality? They probably think you want money, so there’s that, too. These are probably people who would crack long before someone who has already been baptized in the fire of poverty, disappointment, and lost hope. Sad, but true.

Having issues in your life doesn’t make you dumb as a doorknob. And having more money doesn’t make you smarter, either, it just makes the mundane easier. Money doesn’t make you kinder. Or more empathic. Or more human, in the end.

I went through the same scenario—thinking I had a heart attack, complete with hospital admission—just four months ago. I’ve had anxiety issues for years, but experienced some kind of escalation.

Totally feel you on your description of other people’s reactions. Bland admonitions, questions of my strength of character, and gross oversimplifications have been a part of my diet since I manifested symptoms in my teens.

Shit advice abounds: most of the folks who issue it aren’t even self-aware of their own shitty compensation methods and flaws. I’ve been—and still get—lectured about “character” and “bootstraps” by drunks, philanderers, and abusers. My dad tried to “fix” the anxiety instilled by his abuse with more abuse. Not only do I condone your frustration about stupid advice, I endorse it. Every time somebody gives you stupid advice, think “your advice says everything about you, and nothing about me.”

Other than that, big hugs.

First, {{{{hugs}}}}. Many of them.

Second, please trust your own body, mind and spirit. Friends can be very well meaning but what “works” for them may not work for you. There is absolutely nothing “wrong” with you and you do not need to “fix” yourself or your beliefs. You need to trust your instincts to do what you need to do to experience comfort and relief.

I have dealt with depression for years. I’ve only taken medication for it once because it became undendurable (I had just started the worst job I ever had and was beginning m-pause). My doc prescribed Paxil and said I needed to also have counseling because he didn’t believe in prescribing meds without counseling. The counselor was fantastic. The Paxil made me sick after one pill. I even missed work because the reaction was so extreme. I immediately called the office, and the prescribed Cilexia. I started by cutting it into 4 pieces (I know you’re not “supposed” to do that but I wasn’t about to risk another reaction). The Cilexia did help. I took it for about 2 months and quit. I’ve not taken anything since, but everyone is different with different circumstances and needs.

I hope you have a friend or family member or other resource that can support you for you and where you are. That is so important.

Please take care of yourself!

Meds aren’t perfect but they help. Keeps my son’s bi-polar under control or my blood pressure where it should be. If yours help you, then they’re good and no but you and your doctor needs to care beyond that. If not, flushing them is equally as good an answer.

Meds are fine when used appropriately, but are over-prescribed sometimes, as in my own case. Sometimes, talk, with empathy and real care, and good advice on problems at hand, can do wonders for another. It’s not for everyone, of course, but in a society that seemingly only cares for money, keeping up with the Joneses, and the “good life”, it can be life saving.

There is a reason so many think others don’t care a damn about them. Because they experience that, and it’s true to them. We talk about this in a societal and political context every day here, but it’s just as true in the personal realm. There is a lot of truth in the phrase, “fair weather friends”.

172 ObserverArt  Sun, Mar 2, 2014 5:38:43am

A Mom Anon…you sound totally rational and realistic to me, but I am not a doctor. Sometimes doctors don’t seem to take in mind the world can at times totally suck and that is how an individual is seeing it at a this time. Covering it up doesn’t make it go away.

Justanotherhuman has some good advice, and the only thing that I can add is immerse yourself in something that takes what you are talking about head on. Fight your own fight and fight that ‘suck’ that bothers you. I don’t know if you have creative outlets, but now may be a good time for some. Adding to ones self worth by making you feel like you are fixing an issue yourself without medication might just be the best drug. If you feel like you are fighting for you and others like you and maybe be a voice for the issues you are talking about, it might be enough to change the way you feel by taking the negative and making it a positive.

And if some think you are whining, who the hell cares. What ‘they’ think is part of the problem anyway. Educate them and by explaining it to them and others so they can hopefully understand might help you.

I do hope you can find some peace and tranquility in it all. The fact that you were able to help someone with autism makes me think you have a better understanding of emotion and stimulus than others. There might be something in all that understanding that can help you now too.

Well, about 10 years ago I was horrible shape. We had just declared bankruptcy, I was unemployed, I was at the point of considering self harm. I did get a prescription for some medication, I don’t remember the name but it was an SSRI. I took it and I still felt like crap but I didn’t have the inclination to self harm so it must have worked at some level.

I took the meds for several years while I did time-filling stuff like start a 501(c)(3) foundation (which like its designation, makes no profit) but at least it was something to look good on my resume. I also got a job here and there, but they were short-term contracts. I was happy as long as I was working, but once the project was over I got depressed again.

Exercise, especially running, made me feel better. But sadly I tripped and fell and broke my ankle AND HAD NO FREAKING INSURANCE and so running or even walking is no longer an option.

The ankle was broken in 2004. The next time that I obtained insurance was in 2007, I went to an orthopedist and had xrays where they discovered the remodeled fracture. Meanwhile I developed arthritis in both ankles, but it’s much worse in the ankle that was broken.

I have a brace and I take paid meds (allergic to ibuprofen, though), not considering surgery at this point.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Snow’s in the forecast, but it looks like the heaviest stuff is supposed to be south of us. Woo.

Meanwhile, the chairborne rangers are still demanding action on Russia, Ukraine, and the Crimea.

What exactly is to be done? Send in the Marines? The 101st? Drop JDAMs and Tomohawks? Against who exactly? Russia? Make that threat?

Threats are only as good as the potential to back them up with actual action. And everyone knows that the US and Russia aren’t going to start shooting at each other, even over Ukraine or the Crimea. It’s just not going to happen.

So, these folks are going to try and find reasons that there isn’t a credible threat by looking at other actions by the President since 2009 regarding Russian aggression. Except it still has the same outcome. The US wasn’t going to directly engage the Russians militarily.

It didn’t happen during the Cold War against the Soviets. It didn’t happen after the invasion of Georgia and South Ossetia.

It’s not going to happen here.

That leaves economic actions, and those are potentially more destabilizing for Russia than they’re willing to let on.

It would take a concerted effort by the EU to curb ties, particularly energy ties, but if it happens, that would leave Russia in a cash-poor situation with an economy that teeters on the brink. That’s the tactic to adopt here - you don’t attack strength with strength. You find the opposing weakness and hit it when they’re not expecting you to.

BTW that “almond cream pie” was a partial failure. The “almond cream” filling instead of being creamy, came out like an almond-flavored slab of rubbery jello. Yecch. But once we removed the filling, chocolate brownie crust and whipped cream topping paired nicely so it wasn’t a complete disaster.

Preparing a creamy filling without using dairy ingredients is a challenge, it’s even more of a challenge if you want to bake vegan which I dabble occasionally.

Get a bread machine. Worth the investment. I wore myself out trying to figure out why my bread didn’t look as good as the photos. Paid $4 for a thrift store bread machine, which I still have (even though it’s a 1996 model, Sunbeam did the digitals pretty well). Still do the final rise outside it, and bake in the oven, though because I like loaves, not blocks. Takes a lot of strain out of the process—like kneading.

The artisan was my last attempt O_o

Part of the problem is that the rising never works right. Since my kitchen is always so cold, I put the dough in a bowl in the slightly warmed oven with a towel over it but it still never rises properly.

Perhaps the bread machine is the best way to go. Can you use them with regular flour & yeast or do you have to buy the mixes I see at the grocery?

My old machine came with recipes, so I suppose if you go for new, they will, too. After a while, you can play around with them, just remember you can’t do very large batches—most is 2 lb loaves from what I’ve seen.

I’ve adapted other recipes, and the internet if full of bread machine stuff, and the King Arthur Flour site is full of some good stuff, too.

ETA: I usually just use bread flour. Or whole wheat, rye as they come.

213 Justanotherhuman  Sun, Mar 2, 2014 6:53:06am

re: #204 William Barnett-Lewis

BTW, basic bread is just flour, yeast, and water; my basic recipe is 3 c flour, 1 cup water, 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp yeast; you can use that for Italian or French; I add a tsp sugar and 2 tbsp butter for a regular loaf. The chemistry is what’s important, but you don’t have to go all fancy to know that you need “fresh” yeast and flour should not be too old; however, whole grains usually require a bit more yeast. I use bread machine (or “quick”) yeast now and buy it by the jar, keep it in the cupboard for long periods of time, also, which doesn’t seem to bother it. In my macrobiotic days, I even made bread with no bought yeast, just from the air (it took 24 hours to rise even just a little, and was still like a brick—but I was a purist).

As long as the bread rises, it doesn’t matter to me if it looks like the photos anymore—sometimes it looks better. It’s what it tastes like. Take a fresh loaf of Italian out of the oven with its crisp crust and soft inside and have a large piece with a glass of red wine. You’ll know the secret of the ancients about that combo.

You can also make rolls, pastries and sweet breads, and a lot of other stuff in a bread maker.

Heh. The Chairman of the Czech Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee, Karel Schwarzenberg, basically just straight-up said that Putin is acting like Adolf Hitler.

According to the chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee Karel Schwarzenberg (TOP 09) ” …a clear attempt at expansion of power of the Russian Federation, its connection with the Crimea and its important naval base in Sevastopol to Russia .” The arguments of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who deployed troops in Ukraine claiming the need to protect local Russian citizens, are the same arguments Adolf Hitler used during the occupation of a foreign country . Schwarzenberg said, “Hitler always said that we must protect the local Germans. It’s very clear that this is not about the protection of Russian citizens, who are not being attacked and are perfectly safe” .

I can’t say I disagree with Mr. Schwarzenberg. Not one damned bit. He is a very well-known parliamentarian and was previously Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Edit….meant to say “disagree with Mr. Schwarzenberg.”

Unfortunately, that disgusting sentiment is still floating around here in Europe, and heaven knows the Czech Republic is guilty of it as well. The laws that allowed for and enforced “ethnic cleansing” here - the post-WWII expulsion of the Sudeten Germans (amongst others) are still on the books here. The Beneš Decrees; and the Czechs simply refuse to take them off the books.

I understand it as well; I lived for a few years quite close (walking distance) to the Lidice Memorial, and that particular massacre still stands out in the Czech mind.

I certainly don’t approve of the Beneš Decrees, but I understand why it was done in its historical context.

I got into a debate about that with my ex-wife; she wasn’t even willing to give the Germans so much as an apology. She also pointed out that compensation to the former Sudeten Germans would probably bankrupt the country.

The Czechs ultimately did apologize for the Beneš Decrees, but that’s it. No compensation to the Sudeten Germans, and no removing the statutes from the books. It’s still a minor point of contention, but very infrequently. Germany and the Czech Republic have pretty much agreed that it shall be spoken of no more.

MrBWS left early this morning. Got to Cincinnati about half an hour ago. Said that in the 5-10 minutes it took to unload his truck, pack his stuff upstairs to his apartment and move his truck to the parking lot in the back, it changed from rain to ice, and he almost busted his ass getting out of the truck.
So far here in the backwoods, temperature is still above freezing and it’s just rain, but that won’t last long…

I’m concerned that in two months of living up here in SW PA, I’ve seen a whole lot more Confederate flag and CF-esque stuff than I did when living in VA for 20 years.

Extenuating factors:
1. I did live in NoVA.
2. There are a lot of wildcatters from Texas working the new gas wells up here.

Still, I haz dissapoint.

Also, secondary thought: I wonder if the prevalence of Gadsen flag stuff (plates, bumper stickers, t-shirts) seen in NoVA was more about:
A. Too chickenshit to go for the Confederate flag.
B. Actually think owning people was wrong.
C. No real direct connection.
D. Some combination of the above.

Four generations of Orr men had been Eagles, including Ron and Andrew’s older brother.

I get frutsrated when the mindset of a DV victim is not taken into account by the law. I’ve seen no evidence her attorney’s have tried to bring this into the case.

The problem they’ve had is that the law straight-jackets them in a number of ways. That and the decision by the judge that her re-entering the house was “voluntarily re-entering the danger zone”, which made it impossible to argue self-defense when coupled with the instructions given to the jury. The jury instructions will be different this time if the case goes to trial.

I say ‘if’ because if the Florida legislature changes the law before the trial, the proposed changes would retroactively immunize Ms. Alexander from the ‘10, 20, Life’ law.

I feel for ya A Mom Anon. This summer I had some kind of breakdown complete with panic attacks which scared the shit out of me. I checked myself into an IOP Intensive outpatient program which really helped me but I failed to continue with outpatient therapy partially due to my crazy work schedule. Partially because I feel that this is just the way it is for me. I’m on Zoloft, which definitely helps me. I tried a “supplement” from my psychiatrist but it was way to powerful or something so I stopped taking them. Also I think the psychiatrist is incompetent or don’t give a fuck. Anyways he’s leaving for greener pastures so I need to get on the ball and keep working on myself. Also being down here with the “little people” trying to keep my head above water, many of my friends and relatives are just being buried by this recession which is depressing me as well. Just know you are not alone and I agree about people talking shit about pulling yourself up by the bootstraps. I like to remind these people that just because, you know, you haven’t been diagnosed doesn’t mean you don’t have problems.

re: #154 A Mom Anon

(end of vent, you may now return to your regularly scheduled programming)

Nice rant.

If you can’t take SSRIs then anxiety is a tough one.

I can only conclude it was a loss-leader for the DVDs/advertising for the self-help gurus in it.

Nope. Humans are social animals. Complaining about life’s shitstorms is one way of dealing with it. It’s only when one abuses the privilege that it’s a social or personal problem.

However, given our selfish, instant-gratification culture, a single complaint becomes “Oh, you’re sooooo negative KTHXBYE.”

It is not wrong to want to talk to your friends. Having been on both sides of this issue, I can say: I am not a professional. It isn’t fair to dump onto people who cannot really help you. We’re in the “freezing rain/sleet” stage of Stormpocalypse. Heavy snow is supposed to move in tonight. I’m in Cincinnati - a tad south from you.

Snowing pretty good here in Columbus now. Though it sounds like we are not going to get the 8-12” they had predicted. Now saying 3-5” and the best thing…we missed the ice. Yea!

The Penzey’s catalog I got the other day had a “chocolate chip cookie dough pie” recipe in it that sounds like it’d go good with that crust.

Thing is, this is really the first time I ever felt the need to talk to someone that much. I guess what I needed was to hear that I wasn’t some sort of freakosaurus and that I would be ok. Hell, a simple, “let’s meet for coffee” or something like that would have been a big deal. But nooo. What honestly helped me the most was going to the ER and having all those nurses tell me I was going to be alright, that whatever was bothering me was not more important than my health and that I wasn’t crazy or dying. I could see it if I was a PIA and whined all the time, but I’m honestly mostly an upbeat person and really self reliant. I had to be as a kid, coming from a hot mess of a family and being on my own since age 17. I usually can fight my way out of low points. This time I really needed someone and no one was there except to pass judgment or tell me I needed to put on my big girl panties (literally,OMG). I was kinda stunned.

Honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness to listen.

I was always like that, even still am. If they want my advice, I tell them to see a pro; all I have is my own experience and it might not work for them. But when I was on the other side, I found that having empathy and a willingness to listen just isn’t on a lot of people’s radar.

It’s not that I expect someone who’s not a professional to help “cure” what’s ailing me, it’s that a little bit of understanding can go a long way. And your real friends don’t desert you when you’re going through your own personal hell.

re: #252 Backwoods_Sleuth

heh.
We moved from Buffalo to Greater Cincinnati when I was 13 years old.
First time school was canceled due to snow I couldn’t wait to get outside to see massive amounts of snow.
My disappointment was great when I saw maybe 1” of snow…

There are at least three levels of snow preparedness and ability to deal with it here in Ohio. I grew up in the northern Ohio area about 70 miles north of Columbus and 70 south of Cleveland. Snow was no big deal, everyone was used to it and it took a foot to cancel school. If I remember correctly, I think maybe I had a whole half-dozen days off in all 12 years. From about Rt 30 to Lake Erie…it is the snowbelt.

Then there is the Columbus middle of the state. Some freaking out, but overall, we can deal with it. It takes 6” and bad roads to cancel Columbus schools, so they have already had their allotment used up. Some people can drive pretty well, but not all. The city is fairly good at keeping all major roads open and going…but neighborhood streets are usually terrible.

Then there is southern Ohio. 2” and it is a mega crisis. The bad thing though about southern Ohio is they are prone to heavy ice. So, I can sympathize with Cincinnati when it comes to ice.

It is not wrong to want to talk to your friends. Having been on both sides of this issue, I can say: I am not a professional. It isn’t fair to dump onto people who cannot really help you. I had to accept this when I had a friend trying to do to me what I had often tried to do to others. It wasn’t fair to me or to them.

That is why there is clergy, and counselors and diarys.

I think if all you’re looking for is a ear to listen to you and someone who’ll commiserate (“Yeah, that’s pretty fucked up, mang”) and maybe — just maybe! — a factoid or a shift of perspective you’re lacking, friends can be helpful.

But yeah, for deep, chronic, abstract, or overwhelmingly concrete issues, see a professional.

I thank Baby Jebus that my depression and anxiety seem to be (or at least have not yet developed into) situational/non-organic rather than physical/neurochemical.

Took Zoloft for almost a year, didn’t really do much for me other than take a hairsbreadth of edge off my anxiety. Other cognitive work — and a drastic life-change — helped me more, mostly by forcing me out of my rut. (And there was quite a bit of pain, some of which is still ongoing. You are amazing, too, MomAnon. What you’ve done with your life and your son is heroic.

I remember a course in Contemporary American Literature I took in college. We read Bellow, Cheaver, Malmaud (that was too many years ago). Our instructor, a Holy Cross priest who was also a poet, said that one of the hallmarks of contemporary literature was the shift from “mythic” heroes to the heroic acts of everyday people, who choose to take care of their children, give to their communities, nurture marriages, go to work to support families. I thought that was a profound concept. I hope you both apply this to yourselves.

I used to be an Oprah fangirl back in the day. Dr Phil too. Ack, I know, I know. I wised up though, glad I did. It hit me one day that most of these people had big old piles of money that gave them the freedom to live how they wanted. Another day of humans on planet Earth thinking the USA can micro-manage world politics when the USA itself is one big hillbilly mess.

Carry on.

Chuckles Todd was crying for Obama to do something.

Marco Rubio wasn’t going to talk about politics at this time, but it is a fact that American has been weak under Obama. Then (for once) David Gregory shut him up when he said George W looked into Putin’s eyes and Putin screwed him over. Rubio had to change up quickly to saying ‘many’ past administrations have had problems. I guess that won’t happen with Rubio.

Because Rubio is never going to be President.

Personally, I believe there is a certain amount of utility to the underlying perspective, though I think they’re backing into that position, and therefore looking at the wrong damn things (results, methods, reasons).

My quickest take on that underlying perspective: try to look for the good in shitty situations; sometimes you’ll find some.

re: #316 urbanmeemaw

I’m curious. How is that different from Zimmerman engaging Trayvon Martin instead of getting in his SUV and driving off?

Zimmerman claimed he did not perceive a direct threat from Martin until Martin attacked him. Zimmerman also claimed that he only fired after Martin had pinned him to the ground and was hitting him. Thus Zimmerman went into a situation that he thought might be dangerous, not one he already knew to be so.

Alexander went back into her house after finding herself unable to open the garage door. The judge ruled that she should have stayed there and that by re-entering the house she voluntarily reentered a danger zone. Being found to have done that negates a claim of self-defense in most cases, even in SYG states.

Put another way:

If George Zimmerman had gotten punched in the mouth by Trayvon Martin and had run away, only to turn around after a couple minutes, find Martin again and then shoot him;, then it would have been murder.

If Marissa Alexander’s already violent husband had followed her into the garage and she had shot him dead, she would likely not have faced any criminal proceedings.

As the Lizardim know, I’ve been looking for 5 reviews of my new book on Amazon so my publisher can take advantage of some eBook promotion tools.

Response has been… “tepid” would be too warm a word.

In reflecting upon why this is so/why the Universe is so harsh and unloving to Poor Widdle Me (TM), I eventually realized that before my VA-PA move, I had promised a book review to a friend for her eBook on Amazon… which I haven’t done yet.

Aha!

2. My shit’s been crazy the past 4 months; I haven’t had time. Maybe the same thing is true for people wrt my book.
3. Let he without sin cast the first scone.
4. SQUIRREL!

So, yeah. Taking a step back, taking a breath, and looking at my own bullshit helped a bit.

And voila, 3 reviews came in for my book this week.

Cosmic alignment of karmic woo-woo, or the patience to wait a couple more days for results?

Truly a mystery for the ages.

My personal beliefs, bullet-point form:
* Perception of a situation can change attitude. (Yes.)
* Thought can affect you and you can affect reality. (Yes.)
** Reality = Yourself/your own actions. (Yes.)
** Reality = Other people. (Sometimes; more data needed, but note that other people are also free-willed consciousnesses, so your thought may be opposed by their thoughts.)
** Reality = General luck/opportunity/emotions. (Maybe; more data needed.)
** Reality = “Psychic” woo-woo — precognition, telepathy, etc. (Maybe, rarely; more data needed; cross-ref with chadu’s beliefs on the holographic universe and transcendent possible nature of consciousness.)
** Reality = Physical objects and specific desired rewards from above categories of reality. (Not bloody likely.)

How fucking depressing is it to be told, as an experienced adult who has managed a job, a home, children and other aspects of a life, that she doesn’t have the “skills”, because she doesn’t have a 4 yr degree, to be promoted to a job she could do in her spare time? This is what women, and minorities, have been told for far too long.

I’ll never forget the time I was told by a young 20-something HR type at a bank, when I was job seeking in my 50s, that I had to “sacrifice” if I wanted a decent job (this was for a clerical position). I wanted to reach across that desk and smack the shit out of her and it made me so ashamed, I started crying.

This is part of the kind of thing I think he’s getting at. When we have to have several degrees to do a job that a monkey could learn, what does that say about our society?

Second: Saying it has a Narnia feel is high praise to me. I mean, like whoa.

re: #403 b_sharp

How do I check?

Chrome keeps telling me it shut down incorrectly.

Well, I have a Win 8.1 machine, so Task Manager breaks things out differently than it did in previous versions. Under ‘Processes’ there’s now a ‘Background Processes’ subheading, and each of your Chrome tabs (or tab-groups that share the same RAM call) is broken out. Two of mine are making calls for over a gig apiece, with another 4 or 5 saying they’re sucking down about 500 MB. Even on a machine running 16 GB, that’s annoying.

As for not shutting down correctly, that’s gonna happen unless you go to the menu (the three horizontal bars) button, then select ‘exit’ every time you want to leave. I’m not totally sure if the computer’s ‘shut down’ process shuts it down gentle or screws it up like killing the parent process in Task Manager would.

And incidentally, I wouldn’t have checked at all except that my cooling fans suddenly went on like a jet taking off. That was rarely happening even during hardcore gaming, so I took a look at Task Manager.

Relevant yet tangential…

Last year, for example, when President Obama proposed reducing U.S. and Russian nuclear forces by about one-third to 1,100 warheads each, the Joint Chiefs of Staff embraced the idea. A year earlier, an independent panel convened by Global Zero, a disarmament group, concluded that 450 deployed warheads would be enough; one of its members was a retired senator named Chuck Hagel.

But since then, Hagel has been virtually mute about reducing nuclear arms. “If there was ever a time to start resetting this institution and restructuring … it’s now,” he said Tuesday as he pitched his budget to a roomful of defense experts. But when I asked him whether he still harbored the goal of shrinking the nuclear force, he ducked the question, saying his only goal was to leave the military stronger than he found it.

The reason officials don’t like to talk about reducing nuclear arsenals is simple, and it applies in both Washington and Moscow: The weapons may have a diminishing role, but they are protected by political sponsors — sometimes based on honest disagreements over strategy, sometimes because of the jobs they provide.

re: #405 Chrysicat

My Chrome is using less than 200mb for 2 tabs.
If Chrome craps out when I use the window close button instead of the Chrome pulldown, then the problem is Chrome not Windows.

17:45: BBC Monitoring The Ukrainian navy’s flagship, the Hetman Sahaydachny, remains loyal to Ukraine and is “proudly flying the Ukrainian flag”, Rear-Adm Andriy Tarasov says in a statement published on the Defence Ministry’s website. The Hetman Sahaydachny frigate is currently docked at a naval base on Crete, Greece, on the way back to Ukraine from an anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, the statement says.

Well, I have a Win 8.1 machine

I need a new desktop, and all the ones come with that o/s now

Is it okay (un-buggy). We don’t use it for much more than e-mail, social media and searching news, movies, shopping deals

If you don’t have a touch screen, installing ‘Classic Shell’ helps its usefulness.

416 b_sharp  Sun, Mar 2, 2014 9:54:12am

re: #408 Chrysicat

Doesn’t seem that buggy to me, but it has real drawbacks on a desktop without a touchscreen. I have a laptop, so the same gestures you would use on the touchscreen are done on the trackpad.

With just keyboard and mouse I might see if I could get some nice pro to roll your machine back to Win 7, or even spring for the retail edition if I were handbuilding my machine.

Classic Shell helps, as does Start 8.

I know I’m coming in real late to the discussion but I would like to offer a defense, if that’s what it might be called, to those seemingly unsympathetic friends who are unable to assist a friend in despair, or who actually seem to just disappear when a friend is in emotional need.

I learned a lot about this when I woke up one morning a widow, my husband having died suddenly and entirely unexpectedly in his sleep. My entire world cratered and in ways that I never could have anticipated. I had a successful career and active social life with many dear friends I believed would always be there for me. A crisis such as I experienced taught me that such was far from reality. The thing is, I knew even then that it wasn’t cruelty on the part of those who hurt me so deeply - though the hurt was very real. It’s that they didn’t know how. I know they really wanted to help, to say something that would offer comfort, to offer advice that had value. But they couldn’t and they knew that, too, so they ran, they avoided the discomfort. I got it. I had done that in the past as well with others myself, not to be mean but because I felt helpless to offer anything but stupid platitudes.

I ran from them, too. It was such hard work to try to put them at ease in my presence. It was exhausting. It was also increasingly infuriating to try to kindly accept the idiot platitudes and advice coming from people who were completely clueless because they had never been in a similar place so they couldn’t possibly get it. I knew they were offering it out of kindness and caring - I never let myself forget that - but I just couldn’t be around them anymore.

No one was to blame for my having to walk away completely from most of my former friends. Life and circumstances change. I have to be as gentle with them and my memories of them when times were good as I hope, and sincerely believe, they are with me though I know they will never understand why I did what I did.

Making Russia Pay? It’s Not So Simple

Mr. Putin has already demonstrated that the cost to Moscow’s international reputation would not stop him. Having just hosted the Winter Olympics in Sochi, he must have realized he was all but throwing away seven years and $50 billion of effort to polish Russia’s image. He evidently calculated that any diplomatic damage did not outweigh what he sees as a threat to Russia’s historic interest in Ukraine, which was ruled by Moscow until the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Lack of funding is a growing problem. In Canada, the cbc notes, “In the past five years the federal government has dismissed more than 2,000 scientists, and hundreds of programs and world-renowned research facilities have lost their funding. Programs that monitored things such as smoke stack emissions, food inspections, oil spills, water quality and climate change have been drastically cut or shut down.” In the U.S., the sequester imposed by Congress imposed an initial 5% cut in research spending. NIH has lost 25% of its funding since 2003. In a survey last fall, 1/3 of scientists said they had laid off researchers. This is not just an immediate problem, but is likely to decimate US research, persuading aspiring young basic science researchers to seek alternative careers.

I am currently using a Chromebook - an Acer C700 - only because it comes with a 320 gb hard drive so I can install a version of Ubuntu on it and turn it into a real computer. With 8 gb ram & a 64 bit kernel, it’s performance is acceptable. The ChromeOS that comes with it is far less useful than, say, an iPad or other such almost computer. It also crashes if I pick it up wrong because it’s so flimsy that the motherboard flexes and causes a kernel panic.

Had I been able to afford something better I would not have a Chromebook. OTOH, I got it used for $100 including shipping.

In your case? Avoid.

I will say since the switchover from a conservative blog to our current independent state, the drama level has decreased, well, dramatically.

I came in when it had apparently already changed. What brought me here was the independent tone.

I remember coming across a link to it off the Rifqa Bary Muslim girl wanting to be Christian Ohio thing. I was downtown Columbus one day and there were people out in front of the court house that were there to support Bary’s ‘conversion’ and fighting against the Muslim father that was supposedly going to kill her for rejecting his religion.

I didn’t know a lot about that, but did know there was a trail for her to be separated from her family, so I did a Google search and one of the top links was to here as it was being discussed. And you know what I learned? One of the guys I saw at the corner of S. High and Mound Streets was one Robert Spencer. I remembered his face and beard as he looked right at me in the car. I was near the corner stopped at the light and trying to read some of the signs. I sort of wonder if Ms. Spencer was nearby after I learned more about her here too.

We always think there is something wrong with US! The reality is we are having a healthy reaction to a very sick situation, but the culture does not want to frame it that way.
