Sunday Morning Open Thread

Here’s an open thread for discussion of whatever’s going on. Apparently there’s something happening in Ukraine? The start of World War III or something like that?

But seriously, I doubt it’s going to come to a global thermonuclear war. At least, not today.

said Russia’s strategic interests in Ukraine and Crimea should be recognized, but it was unacceptable that the internal balances of a sovereign state would be rearranged based on another state’s interests.

Not surprising. They’ve been adjusting to the new reality in the region. Closer ties with Iran and Russia now that Assad is looking like he’s going to stick around a while they’re not going to be making problems for Syria.

Watching Game of Stones. The producers think us all pretty damn stupid. Long story short-They buy rough ruby in Cambodia. The stones will be heat treated, all perfectly normal. But in the big reveal in the heat treating shack- the stones are heat treated, and cut and polished. Not a peep about cutting being done.

WTF?!

Whitman on Lincoln: “I see the President almost every day … I see very plainly Abraham Lincoln’s dark brown face, with the deep-cut lines, the eyes, always to me with a deep latent sadness in the expression. We have got so that we exchange bows, and very cordial ones. … None of the artists or pictures has caught the deep, though subtle and indirect, expression of this man’s face. There is something else there. One of the great portrait painters of two or three centuries ago is needed.”

Tucker Carlson is being his usual douche self:

While discussing political and racial discourse in the U.S. last Friday, Fox News host Tucker Carlson claimed that the federal government is guilty of a kind of reverse racism, making policy to favor people of color.

“The federal government takes sides and hands out spoils based on skin color,” Carlson claimed while speaking on the radio show of Alex Jones, conspiracy theorist and head of Infowars.com. Carlson expressed his disgust of the country’s previous segregation, and likened present-day “handouts” to the government “[taking] sides based on race” as it did in the past.

Then again, it’s become tradition for me to catch at least one head cold or flu bug every winter. Now I just wish I could use this to convince the judge to get me out of jury duty next week. Ugh.

My grumbling aside, I invite any Republicans who think that there’s something that a “strong” president would do in this situation to address Putin to sit down together and watch “The Day After.” If you’re not crying or puking by the ending, then you have no fucking soul.

I don’t think there is any real comparison between the two, but I can admit I see the irony in the statement made earlier.

Just so long as the irony is backed up by the fact that it was all done under another administration and the way America works is two different administrations can have two totally different policies and outlooks.

Will seems to be leaving that out. Ahhh, there is the question? Just more political motivation than truths.

Like Lindsey Graham. I too wish Obama did something starting with a call to him and McCain up and remind them that he IS the fucking commander in Chief and they are doing nothing for America by trying to lessen his stature for cheap tea-dragging politics.

Funny how war hawks can be some of the less war-like in decorum and appearance, both very important things right now.

10/11/01 - Everybody behind George Bush no matter what…if you aren’t you aren’t an American.

01/20/09 - Hope and Change…everybody behind Obama…um, uh, is he an American? Sorry no can do…wouldn’t be good to be seen in support of anything.

Will implies via his irony we have no moral authority in this.
I think now with this President we do and have standing to object to harsh measures from Vlad. Not as anyone necessarily in charge. Simply commensurate with our interests along with our allies. IMHO his looks like a *soft power moment. Perhaps a test of western soft power.

*Caveat-Controversial term but on point.

This shit is getting scary.

It’s still early for Edna St. Vincent Millay, but:

Apostrophe to Man

(on reflecting that the world is ready to go to war again)

Detestable race, continue to expunge yourself, die out.
Breed faster, crowd, encroach, sing hymns, build bombing airplanes;
Make speeches, unveil statues, issue bonds, parade;
Convert again into explosives the bewildered ammonia and the distracted cellulose;
Convert again into putrescent matter drawing flies
The hopeful bodies of the young; exhort,
Pray, pull long faces, be earnest, be all but overcome, be photographed;
Confer, perfect your formulae, commercialize
Becateria harmful to human tissue,
Put death on the market;
Breed, crowd, encroach, expand, expunge yourself, die out,
Homo called sapiens.

Twenty years ago I expected to live out my days without ever again pondering the insane calculus of Mutual Assured Destruction. Today, I’m not so sure.

As I’ve been saying, Poland is the wild card in this. Combined that with Article 5 of the NATO treaty (All for one, one for all) and you have a very dangerous mess right now that is eerily like the call ups of 1914 but still before the guns started shooting in August. The GOP will complain if President Obama leads us into a war over Ukraine, or steers us away. They will complain, regardless of the actions taken, the constraints on the President to act, and logic and reasoning. They will ignore that keeping the US out of a potentially disastrous conflict might be a good thing, even if it sucks for Ukrainians and Crimeans because the Russians aren’t Iraqis, Afghanistanis, or anyone that the Russians have used as proxies.

The GOP will complain, even it is exactly what they would have done in the same situation (and the analogy to South Ossetia can’t be disregarded).

They will complain because it’s President Obama.

Still, there are some possibilities for action that could be proposed that might be useful.

Oligarchs step in to save Ukraine’s sovereignty

kyivpost.com

“Igor Kolomoisky, the controversial billionaire owner of PrivatBank, was appointed to head Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and Serhiy Taruta, the owner of the Industrial Union of Donbass, is taking over the Donetsk Oblast administration. Acting President Olekandr Turchynov made the appointments on March 2.

“Other oligarchs have been approached by government envoys with offers to take charge of other potentially troublesome regions since the rise of separatist sentiments in eastern and southern Ukraine, heated up by Russia’s ongoing invasion of Crimea, which began on Feb. 27. Some of them have already refused the offers.

“Ukraine’s oligarchs, who own much of Ukraine’s industrial economy, have always exerted their influence on government, but running the government would give them more direct responsibilities and power.”

Russian TV ratchets up rhetoric on Ukraine

Framed against the background of massed Russian flags at a pro-Moscow demonstration in Crimea and the caption “We don’t give up our own”, Kiselev said that it was “impossible not to respond to this challenge”.

“This is not even Syria, it is simply us,” he declared.

Reports from the eastern Ukrainian cities of Donetsk and Kharkiv reinforced the message. Crowds were shown chanting “Russia, Russia”, waving Russian flags and sporting the ribbons of St George, a military symbol associated with Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations on 9 May.

Back in Moscow and St Petersburg, there were also large gatherings in support of Putin’s stance on Ukraine.

“This is a personal matter for all of us. It is an historic moment, when our common energy is the key to victory,” Mr Kiselev intoned.

I don’t think Russia is going to stop with Crimea.

The Poles are moving military gear around but they aren’t going to go into Ukraine because of NATO restrictions. I think it’s very unlikely NATO is going to engage the Russians. US certainly isn’t. What scenarios are you thinking might be possible?

Chubarov: Russian invasion of Crimea is threat to world peace, security

kyivpost.com

“Russia’s invason (sic) of Crimea poses a new challenge to Ukraine’s Tatars, an indigenous ethnic minority on the peninsula that returned to the nation in the 1980s after their deportation in the early 1940s by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

“Refat Chubarov, chairman of the Mejlis, the representative body of Crimean Tatars, says he is afraid that Russians will accuse the ethnic group of being a threat to ethnic Russians. So he is asking Tatars to minimize their time in public and avoid confrontations.

“Some Tatars, however, have done the opposite and formed their own self-defense units that patrol streets. These civic guards are unarmed and are multinational. “Their main task is to prevent provocations,” Chubarov said. “

I wouldn’t say that. Even things that are directly called “redlines” aren’t necessarily red lines. I don’t think there will be even serious thought about repercussions unless the Russians expand beyond Ukraine. I’m pretty sure we’re resigned to letting the Russians take as much of the country as they want.

It’s taking on the dimensions of a crusade. Today, the former Foreign Minister and current Foreign Affairs Parliamentary Chairman - an extremely well-respected man here - straight up said, “Putin=Hitler”.

I think it’s entirely possible that Poland is a wild card. I honestly don’t know what they’d do, but my gut instinct tells me they’ll do something, particularly if Russia starts rolling towards Lviv.

Attitudes are hardening rapidly here in the eastern quarters of Central Europe, economics be damned. Like I said, it’s just my gut instinct, but I can ‘feel it in my bones’ - something big is about to go down.

……
Russia’s economy has already been slowing down for the past several quarters, and the absolute last thing that it needs at the moment is a huge acceleration in capital flight. The ruble is also going to suffer, and while a cheaper ruble could eventually be good for domestic manufacturers in the short term a much weaker ruble is likely to spark inflation (perhaps cause the Central Bank to raise interest rates).”

Oh no, just within the context of the tweet. Hopelessly distant comparison are weak. Again just my IMO. If he thinks a little he can find far more apt ways to take digs at our unwarranted invasion of Iraq. This just ain’t it.

re: #56 EmmaAnne

I guess this resonates more for me than for the rest of you. I don’t see this as Wil saying that the U.S. has no moral authority (or anything about Obama). I see it as, yeah, bitter irony. The mood feels very much like the lead up to Iraq. The laying out of justifications and trumped up evidence. The strutting around and the fawning propaganda. I wonder if the Russians are sitting around congratulating themselves for “creating their own reality.”

I have to say, I agree with Wil on this…from what I’m reading from his tweets is that George W. Bush and his seconds burnt up a lot of US credibility in the run-up to Iraq War 2 (and what came out during and after the fact). Now, that Putin is taking a few pages from that playbook in regards to Ukraine and Crimea, anything President Obama or Secretary Kerry says or does is going to be met with derision and incredulity by the Russians and is going to be run through the filter of the Bush cockups by everyone else.

Right or wrong, it’s completely FUBAR.

I told him I had no injuries and that I am okay. I got one of my co-workers who is a lay minister to take me there. Prayers were said and dad and I talked. I am a little shaken by what I have seen but life goes on. I would also take the time right now to thank my fellow Lizards for what you have done for me. OK, let’s pull some actual numbers here.

The Ukrainian ground forces are about 1/4 the size (numbers of personnel and equipment) those of Russia. The equipment they have is comparable - Ukraine used to be the jewel of the nation both because it was a staging area for WWIII and because it was one of the wealthier nations in the USSR. It didn’t lose its wealth in the breakup, and felt it necessary to maintain the strength to stand up to Russia (more or less) since the breakup.

4:1 sounds like a huge difference but Russia cannot afford to go all in. It’s got too many fires in too many places. It can probably run 2:1 for a while, 3:2 for a few months, and 1:1 if things go more than six months. One of the factors in that is that if the conflict extends a large number of people currently considered inactive reserve and civilian would be joining the ranks.

Russia’s Big Advantage is in airpower. Russia has ten times the aircraft pretty much regardless of type under consideration. They are going to attain general air superiority and will almost always have local as well. Their concern is those ground forces as anti-air ground forces is a big deal in ex-soviet forces. Something about dealing with the wests’ air superiority advantage. Rephrased, it’s something for which both armies trained.

The Ukranians have a massive and obvious logistical advantage for their forces. Russian forces crushing them is possible but should not be considered a give-away position.

Tell me about it. When I first saw my mother at the time she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, it broke my heart. She was severely underweight and such a far cry from the strong, vibrant woman I’d known growing up. The last 3 1/2 years of seeing her slowly forget who she is, who I am and everything else has been incredibly hard.

Seeing the fragility of your parents is never fun.

So did Susan Martinez’s hair stylist stop doing her hair only or stop doing hair styles?

if the first, there is nothing wrong in refusing to do something for someone because of their actions. You just can’t choose to discriminate based on something the person has no control over.

If the second, then the hair stylist has chosen to not do it for anyone, and refusing everyone is a valid choice.

So, Susana Martinez’ gay hairstylist has given up the gig in opposition to Martinez’ stance on gay marriage.

One of my Facebook wingnuts posted the story, saying ‘What say you libs?’ I replied that it didn’t affect me in the least what a hairstylist in New Mexico does, to which he replied ‘So it only matters when conservatives refuse service? Gotcha.’

I pointed out that if she had resigned the job on religious grounds there may be a comparison.

It’s all about the ‘gotcha’ with these people.

Wasn’t that like four years ago? And the stylist was a gay man, unless this has happened again….

Fertilized my carnivorous plants right before work this morning. I love this Maxsea fertilizer, it was developed for the Californian pot industry but when diluted 1/4th strength it’s the only fertilizer that doesn’t kill Carnivorous Plants. Works great on them, too - but only as a foliar spray. Since their leaves are designed to absorb nutrients it works doubletime for them.

Still no strikes on my Drosera Filiformis ‘Florida Red’ seed, but the Drosera Aliciae and Drosera Intermedia (Cuban Form) are sprouting like mad. Aliciae is remaining small (I’m a bit worried about it to be honest, the growth conditions might not be ideal) but Intermedia is definitely taking off.

In another 2-4 weeks I’ll be able to take the Venus Flytraps and Sarracenia (American Pitcher Plants) out of the fridge for spring. Plan on putting one of each in the grow rack and the rest on the porch. Apparently the USDA reclassified Twin Falls, ID as Zone 6B, which is up from 5A. VFTs grow natively in 8A, but 6B might just be warm enough to be able to keep them outside all winter this year. We’ll have to see.

I have 3 Pings:

Pinguicula Gigantea, the Mexican Giant Butterwort
Pinguicula ‘Titan’, a Cultivar
Pinguicula ‘Yucca Do 1713’, a mystery plant from the Yucca Do nursery in Mexico. It is likely P. Esseriana based on the shape, color, and flowers.

Most of my carnivorous plants are sundews. Pings are great companion plants to Orchids, as they grow in much the same conditions but eat bugs. I believe that Pinguicula ‘Weser’ and Pinguicula ‘Sethos’ were specifically bred to be grown with Orchids and have Orchid-like flowers.

She looks old enough to remember the Great Patriotic War, and all the horror that entailed.

As an example, Kharkov. The front moved over it four times. Before the war 300,000 people lived in it. After the front moved away for the last time they found thirty of the original inhabitants still living there.

This has been my biggest worry for many years. WWII is fading into the distance. Very few people remember it. They don’t remember tankers burning in sight of the beaches of New Jersey. They don’t remember the firestorms of Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo. They don’t remember freezing to death on the Eastern Front. They don’t remember slogging through the jungles of the Solomons.

Beyond that, the last few rumored wars have been successfully rendered morally ambiguous. The ‘good guys’ spread across the Internet as a contaminated mix of heroes, innocents, terrorists and fascists, and the ‘bad guys’ perhaps not as bad as their wannbe replacements.

so, you’ve got something that supports HSF. Didn’t realize that it would go THAT fast. Very impressive

Many many years ago when I was a relative pup, I took a class in wildlife photography from the Photographer Emeritus and his wife from the St. Louis Zoo. They had spent their entire career doing wildlife photography, great teachers. They stressed how important it was to use a flash, even in direct sun, if for no other reason than to get the ‘catchlights’ in the eye.

Always impressed by your stuff..

Shuffling from Iraq to AFG, then back home is a real reduction. As long as boots are not on the ground, stray hellfires and JDAMs have little shock value any more. Ukraine ‘on brink of disaster,’ PM says; Kerry to visit

“This is not a threat, this is actually a declaration of war to my country,” Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.

usatoday.com

“This isn’t really a crisis because all of Sevastopol was afraid of the Maidan movement,” said waiter Konstantin Solovev, 28. “We heard many stories that those people were threatening this city.”

“Even so, some locals created a petition signed by tens of thousands telling Russia they didn’t need Russian help.

“Dear Mr. President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, We ethnic Russians and Russian-speaking Ukrainian nationals do not need other countries to defend our interests,” the petition read. “We are grateful to you for support however would like to inform you that nobody has ever infringed our rights on Ukrainian territory … therefore, we would ask you to not raise an internal question for our country which is not a burning issue for us … Not to mention bringing troops in to regulate a conflict which you may see but which is not visible to us.”

“We heard many stories…” A huge part of the problem was those rumors flying and those who propagated that gossip, the likely suspect, Russia itself.

They are against all wars and killing people, so they say. You think they are making acceptations?

What you’re describing is pacifism. Being anti-war is not the same as being a pacifist, though they’re certainly not mutually exclusive:

Pacifist and anti-war movements are similar, but not the same. Pacifism is the belief that violent conflict is never acceptable and that society should not be ready to fight in a conflict (see disarmament); the anti-war movement is not necessarily opposed to national defense. Pacifists oppose all war, but anti-war activists may be opposed to only a particular war or wars.

Einstein was a pacifist who eventually betrayed his own principles in a big way, but he appears to never have lost his contempt for war or for those who look forward to engaging in it:

My participation in the production of the atom bomb consisted in a single act: I signed a letter to President Roosevelt. this letter stressed the necessity of large scale experimentation to ascertain the possibility of producing an atom bomb.

I was well aware of the dreadful danger for all mankind, if these experiments would succeed. But the probability that the Germans might work on that very problem with good chance of success prompted me to take that step. I did not see any other way out, although I always was a convinced pacifist. To kill in war time, it seems to me, is in no ways better than common murder.

As long however, as nations are ready to abolish war by common action and to solve their conflicts in a peaceful way on a legal basis. they feel compelled to prepare for war. They feel moreover compelled to prepare the most abominable means, in order not to be left behind in the general armaments race. Such procedure leads inevitable to war, which, in turn, under todays conditions, spells universal destruction. […]

Hear, hear!

It’s been pretty much solid ice for the last 3 hours, my car is totally iced over, it’s starting to build in the roads in the neighborhood. Lastest from Accuweather makes it look like nothing but ice here until 7am or so, then a couple of hours of snow just to put a nice topping on it.

Glad I get to stay home and teach.

Conservatives crying that Obama is being protested enough.

Give me a fucking break.

Protip: Obama’s got his problems but he’s nowhere near the colossal fuckup you helped either put in office (W), or the nitwits you tried to put in office (Romney).

Not to mention Palin, since if McCain had been elected the extra stress that’s making Obama look 65 would have killed him and put her in power… *shudder*

Are there ANY prominent Republicans who view Putin as the enemy, and not Obama? This game looks like a no-hitter.
