In Which Glenn Greenwald Praises a 9/11 Truther as a Hero of Journalistic Independence

The propaganda is getting deep
Weird • Views: 43,983

Today blogger Glenn Greenwald has posted what has to be one of his most dishonest articles yet, glorifying Russia Today host Abby Martin for criticizing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: RT Host Abby Martin Condemns Russian Incursion Into Crimea - on RT - the Intercept.

American media elites awash in an orgy of feel-good condemnation in particular love to mock Russian media, especially the government-funded English-language outlet RT, as being a source of shameless pro-Putin propaganda, where free expression is strictly barred (in contrast to the Free American Media). That that network has a strong pro-Russian bias is unquestionably true. But one of its leading hosts, Abby Martin, remarkably demonstrated last night what “journalistic independence” means by ending her Breaking the Set program with a clear and unapologetic denunciation of the Russian action in Ukraine…

Notice: Greenwald may be praising Martin for her criticism, but he never condemns the incursion himself. And he completely ignores the simple fact that propaganda often includes a show of dissent, to make the disinformation seem more credible; he wants you to simply accept Martin’s statements at face value.

And what about Martin herself? How credible is she as a model of heroic journalistic independence?

Answer: Abby Martin is a 9/11 Truther and raving conspiracy theorist in the mold of Alex Jones. See:

YouTube

Abby Martin thinks fluoridation is a plot to poison the water supply and brainwash Americans into … something.

YouTube

Abby Martin also thinks Freemasons control the media and are subverting American democracy. (For “Freemasons,” read: “Jews.”)

YouTube

Are you beginning to see why the Kremlin picked Abby Martin as their spokesperson — and now token dissenter?

This is a “journalist?”

And that’s not the only ridiculously deceptive part of Greenwald’s article. His point is that US media obediently went along with government propaganda in the lead-up to the Iraq War, and that not a single US journalist was critical of the effort. (Which is not true, by the way.)

Oddly enough, he doesn’t include himself in this litany of shame — because Glenn Greenwald was a supporter of the Bush presidency and the Iraq War. In his own words:

During the lead-up to the invasion, I was concerned that the hell-bent focus on invading Iraq was being driven by agendas and strategic objectives that had nothing to do with terrorism or the 9/11 attacks. The overt rationale for the invasion was exceedingly weak, particularly given that it would lead to an open-ended, incalculably costly, and intensely risky preemptive war. Around the same time, it was revealed that an invasion of Iraq and the removal of Saddam Hussein had been high on the agenda of various senior administration officials long before September 11. Despite these doubts, concerns, and grounds for ambivalence, I had not abandoned my trust in the Bush administration. Between the president’s performance in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the swift removal of the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the fact that I wanted the president to succeed, because my loyalty is to my country and he was the leader of my country, I still gave the administration the benefit of the doubt. I believed then that the president was entitled to have his national security judgment deferred to, and to the extent that I was able to develop a definitive view, I accepted his judgment that American security really would be enhanced by the invasion of this sovereign country.

And of course, now he’s denying it:

UPDATE at 3/4/14 11:49:10 am

And just to make the hypocrisy even more obvious, Russia Today has now removed Abby Martin’s criticisms from their YouTube channel: Russia Censors RT News Host’s Blistering Critique of Ukraine Invasion.

UPDATE at 3/4/14 11:57:13 am

And now: Russia Today Host Who Criticised Kremlin Sent to Crimea.

A TV presenter working for a Kremlin-funded channel who spoke out against Russia’s military invasion in Ukraine live on air has been sent by the broadcaster to Crimea to “better her knowledge” of the situation.

UPDATE at 3/4/14 12:00:26 pm

And now:

UPDATE at 3/4/14 5:38:44 pm

Here’s video of Abby Martin being interviewed at a 9/11 Truth rally in 2008, before her gig with Russia Today, expressing her view that the 9/11 attacks were an inside job staged by the US government. “Absolutely,” says Abby.

(h/t: @EddyElfenbein.)

YouTube

UPDATE at 3/5/14 1:51:14 pm

Interesting. As you can see, the video of Abby Martin ranting that the 9/11 attacks were an “inside job” by the US government has now been deleted from YouTube.

Greenwald’s parsing and dissembling again.

Wrong side? What’s the wrong side is situational. It was right back in 2000-2008, but wrong thereafter.

False? Again, situational - anything that I said in the past can not be used against me because I reserve the unilateral right to change my mind, and retroactively adjust my views accordingly.

Seems to me the quote from GG is even worse than that. Basically he acknowledges that notwithstanding all the evidence to the contrary, he believed in the war, because the President of the United States did and he wanted him to succeed. Boy what Obama wouldn’t give for that sort of deference. Nice to see such journalistic integrity as “I am pretty sure you are totally full of shit, but I like your ideology and I support you so I will give you a pass on this.”

Didn’t Newt Gingrich do something like that a few years ago—i.e. claim that using things he’d said in the past was A LIE because he’d supposedly changed his mind since then, or some such nonsense?

You can change your mind and/or behavior, but doing so hardly makes your past words & actions disappear.

I actually thought the Abby Martin stunt—criticism followed by a trip to Crimea—could be a pretty clever little narrative show of “press freedom” with a side order of setting the narrative on Crimea. Now that they’ve taken down her critique and the visit isn’t happening, I’m kind of thinking I gave them too much credit.

How structured the Snowden appearance is, and if/how current events in Russia are addressed, are going to be interesting as benchmarks of how much handling he’s getting.

Putin is counting on a few big advantages in the propaganda war:

a) most Americans have no idea of what is really happening in the Ukraine and Crimea

b) Lots of Americans are nonetheless very vocal in expressing their support and/or opposition to a lot of causes they do not understand

c) moonbats and wingnuts will not hesitate to criticize Obama heavily for anything he does/does not do.

OT: The Kentucky AG has announced he will not appeal the ruling that requires Kentucky to recognize valid out-of-state same-sex marriages, and the Kentucky Governor, Steve Beshear, has announced the state will hire outside counsel to pursue an appeal. Beshear didn’t give any red meat rhetoric about saving the family. He said that this issue will be decided by the US Supreme Court, and Kentucky should be part of the process, even though his AG said the law is discriminatory and an appeal is a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Actually, yes - he does. Greenwald very obviously has contempt for his audience’s intelligence. He knows he doesn’t have to make real arguments because they’ll accept anything he says without question, and he uses that very deliberately.

Obama Takes Tough Stand Against Russia - On A Kid’s Alphabet Carpet

From the BBC:

20:26:

According to Reuters, it is the first time the demonstrators have outnumbered the pro-Russia supporters who have laid siege to some government buildings in the city since Monday, Reuters reports.
20:24:

More than 1,000 demonstrators took the streets of Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, today, Reuters reports. They were carrying Ukrainian flags and chanting slogans such as “I am Russia, I don’t need protection”.

Heh.

Predictably, the RWNJs are busy meme-ing that to death:

Putin holds a bizarre presser, in which he sounds like a cross between a drunk Kim Jong Un/Jong Il and Baghdad Bob.

President Bush holds an impromptu presser on Ukraine at a previously scheduled event that happens to be a school, and the right thinks this is emblematic of Obama’s weakness? Really?

GOPers don’t care where President Obama speaks from. They think the worst of him at every opportunity, for who he is and what he represents.

To the Right, every single issue is about why Obama is the worst President evah. In the real world, Putin doesn’t care who the President is when Russian national security interests are a stake, and to them no issue is more critical than the security of the home base of the Black Sea Fleet. George Bush’s “tough guy” persona certainly didn’t give Putin pause when he invaded Georgia.

Libyan TV national station assaulted, offical (sic) says

english.alarabiya.net

“Gunmen launched an attack on Libya’s official television station on Tuesday, firing rocket-propelled grenades at the troops guarding it before they were driven off by reinforcements, officials said. There were no reports of casualties.

“The officials said the attackers were likely the followers of militia leader Jumaa al-Shahm, who had controlled the Libya TV station building in the capital Tripoli for months before being ousted by government forces last week. Al-Shahm was arrested.

“Three years after the ouster and slaying of longtime dictator Muammar Qaddafi, Libya’s central government still has little authority. The military and police are in disarray, outmanned and outgunned by rival militias who frequently take over state facilities.”

Nine Greenpeace activists arrested in P&G protest

Protesters claim P&G linked to deforestation

wcpo.com

CINCINNATI — Nine Greenpeace activists were arrested Tuesday and charged with burglary and vandalism after hanging from a zip line outside Procter & Gamble’s twin towers.

“The protesters, three women and six men, unfurled two 60-foot banners to call attention to what they claimed was P&G’s link to tropical deforestation. One of the activists dressed in a tiger costume while hanging from the zip line.

“The banners stated: “Head & Shoulders, Stop Putting Tiger Survival on the Line” and “Head & Shoulders, Wipes out Dandruff & Rainforests.”

Putin gets body language analysis, because policy discussion would be boring
Putin’s Body Language Betrayed Anxiety, Aggression

Vladimir Putin tried to sound reasonable and in control as he addressed the Ukrainian crisis during his news conference Tuesday — but his lip-licking and furrowed brow betrayed a mix of aggression and nervousness, body-language experts said.

At times slouching in a chair, Putin might have seemed — at first glance — relaxed as he discussed the Russian military intervention that has put Moscow at odds with the West.

But Joseph Tecce, a psychology professor and body-language scholar at Boston College, said Putin’s “unusual” number of quick head movements suggested he was feeling anxious. He licked his lips frequently, a sign of a dry mouth that also conveys unease.

“Early on, he shifts his body posture to be somewhat tilted in an attempt to relax more, another indication that he was feeling tense,” Tecce said.

That’s because it is.

If you just believe hard enough, God will grant you “favor”, i.e., a better job, more money, an attractive spouse, a bigger home, etc. The richer you are, the more blessed you are and the more sincere your belief. Poverty, unemployment, etc. are treated like moral failings because you’re not trying hard enough, or because you doubt God.

Heh. I use the word very intentionally. From wiki:

Heresy is any provocative belief or theory that is strongly at variance with established beliefs or customs. A heretic is a proponent of such claims or beliefs.[1] Heresy is distinct from both apostasy, which is the explicit renunciation of one’s religion, principles or cause,[2] and blasphemy, which is irreverence toward religion.

Yes. I have a few myself since I am a good Episcopalian… ;)

Sometimes it’s not a big deal because no one can fully know the reality of the divine and so there are gaps in doctrine, dogma, understanding, etc.

Other times, though, you get twisted beliefs that lead people explicitly in the opposite direction from the beliefs of the majority without any rhyme or reason.

On the Gripping Hand, you can end up with a schism when two groups go separate ways on the basis of what each thinks is the other’s heresy - Christianity and rabbinical Judaism over the question of “is this the messiah?” One says “yes”, the other say’s “still waiting”…

Okay, now I’m confused. As an infant, I was baptized Methodist but raised Mennonite, and I reject them both. So you might say I’m an apostate, since the Methodists probably think I’m a Methodist. But the Mennonites would argue that by never choosing to be baptized I never really joined the church, so how could I be an apostate from a religion to which I never belonged?

I guess I’ll stick with blasphemy.

Indeed. Strangely, Update III: The Airbrushing Out of History has not yet appeared at the second link. Why do you imagine this might be?

Putin just gave a pretty much completely incomprehensible, disconnected from reality, North Korean style press conference.

There are rumors that some world leaders have contacted him and came away with the impression he’s completely lost his mind. This is not good.

Don’t worry, he’s not insane. Gus linked to a good article last night about Putin’s post-Soviet mentality. His actions in Ukraine fit a pattern consistent with Russian mentality and their world view. This is a deliberate move and not the flailings of a madman.

Not to worry. They’re asteroids till they get close enough and are aimed at you.

Near miss = asteroid.

Hit = meteor.

Kuiper belt = just another notch.

Sort of OT, but does anyone remember when RWNJ’s were in an uproar over P&G’s logo because they said it was Satanic?

Good times.

I learned the basic structure of Japanese superhero genre before I learned Christian eschatology.

It is very hard for me not to visualize the entire shebang as a sentai show. Or Gundam.
