Our Drone Future explores the technology, capability, and purpose of drones, as their presence becomes an increasingly pervasive reality in the skies of tomorrow.

In the near future, cities use semi-autonomous drones for urban security. Human officers monitor drone feeds remotely, and data reports are displayed with a detailed HUD and communicated via a simulated human voice (designed to mitigate discomfort with sentient drone technology). While the drones operate independently, they are “guided” by the human monitors, who can suggest alternate mission plans and ask questions.

Specializing in predictive analysis, the security drones can retask themselves to investigate potential threats. As shown in this video, an urban security drone surveys San Francisco’s landmarks and encounters fierce civilian resistance.

Everything Elon Musk does impresses me.

“Our Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles are truly made in America,” he said. “This stands in stark contrast to the United Launch Alliance’s most frequently flown vehicle, the Atlas V.”

That rocket uses a Russian engine, Musk said, and half the airframe is built abroad.

“Supply of the main engine depends on President Putin’s permission,” he said.

KABUL, Afghanistan — An American drone strike killed five Afghan National Army soldiers and wounded eight more Thursday morning, according to Afghan officials.

The attack took place at 3:20 a.m. in the Charkh district of Logar Province, an area of intense insurgent activity.

“We believe the strike was the result of poor coordination between the people on the ground and the operators of the drone,” said Din Mohammad Darwish, a spokesman for the governor of Logar Province, which is in eastern Afghanistan, neighboring Kabul Province.

Events like this will make a full pullout all but unavoidable.

I’m deploring the downhill slide in BBC documentaries. I guess they have to compete with the private broadcasters and even the tabloids, but they’re sliding in the “entertainment” approach to documentaries rather than the educational ones.

Though the productions have been uneven for a long time - some being much better than others - in the past couple of years I’ve noticed the need on the part of the BBC to really push that they are still valid to their taxpayers, with a great deal of patriotism (the understated British kind, not the over-the-top American kind) seeping throughout their series. It is as if they are on a mission to keep reminding their taxpayers that being British is a good thing.

Anyway, finally watched the BBC “Bible Hunters” documentary from a few weeks ago:

Youtube Video

The host/narrator makes some claims scattered throughout that just are wrong - or at best baseless. All highly technical fields of course have to be simplified to be presented to the general public, but he goes overboard in his simplistic presentation of Christianity.

I have noticed a general decline in the quality of British TV since I first started watching it (in the mid 90’s) I used to be able to almost always find something interesting, but the last time I was there we had a satellite dish with hundreds of channels and it was all dreck.

Jeff Rose, the host of that two part series on the Bible, really makes some sweeping statements that, because they are grossly over broad, become false.

It’s something I might expect from an American show - well, American TV on the whole does not run series critical of the Bible, rather, American TV is filled with Bible-believing reinforcement programming.

This gets me back to DWTS (how does everything seem to come back to DWTS?) It’s the Americanized version of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. SCD is slowly changing, and some of the die hard fans are decrying the Americanization of the show.

The BBC has been under attack for some time, with various parties pushing to sell it, etc. So I guess the administrators realize they have to keep their ratings up somehow, and stodgy old programs full of academic debate won’t do it. The BBC production values are still among the best anywhere and on the whole I think they produce a large amount of decent programming, but this thing with major documentaries and the path they are taking leads me to believe that the once high-water-mark academic aspirations of the BBC are gone.

Just one of a pile of assertions glibly offered by Jeff Rose in that BBC program: he visits the famous St. Catherine’s monastery in the Sinai, and Rose blithely and with a strait face says “Mt. Sinai”, telling his viewers this is the location of said famous site in the OT.

Now the OT stories of Moses certainly are, at least in large part, mythical fabrications to create a founder-figure for Judaism; and, it has long been understood, even by believers, that the location of “Mt. Sinai” is unknown.

An indeed, the Mormon outlet Deseret News mentioned that just yesterday:

Defending the Faith: Where is Mount Sinai?

The problem I have with Rose is not that his two-parter documentary is an attack on literalism and fundamentalist Christian views of the Bible, but that he does such a half-assed job of it.

It is a very common scam. They get some meta data on you, call you and tell you all about the computer you are on. Do a Google and you can read all about it. I got one last summer. I told them I was busy and call me back. I did a Google search, learned what they were up to and then I played along getting as much info about them as I could…then I told them I’d be contacting the Ohio Attorney General office and give them names, phone numbers, etc.

Meta Data!

Never heard back again.

I reported it to the FTC and DNC. They used a Georgia phone number and doing a search a lot of people are getting phone calls from the same number.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Just outside the ring of steel that the NYPD and PAPD are setting up for the WTC complex, so we already have the ground-level components moving into place for this kind of future.

Lots of cameras, sensors, and detectors.

That’s on top of the uniformed and undercover cops that are constantly patrolling the area.

For a place like the WTC, this makes tremendous sense, given that it was successfully targeted by terrorists twice, with devastating consequences. Twice.

There’s a symbolic nature to the site that keeps drawing terrorists to attack, which is why security here is and should be higher than most anywhere else in the country.

It’s a balancing act on security, and the cameras will do well in the investigation after an attack - they aren’t necessarily going to thwart a dedicated terror cell/individual.

And local residents are pissed at the levels of security that will be put in place, requiring ID access to drive on public streets that directly ring the site to the South, and other security measures that make those that call the area home far more difficult than they ought to be.

Still, there’s something that is lost when security trumps all. And when the surveillance pushes past public spaces.

Well, you may be correct on all that. Once you get something rolling it is pretty hard to stop.

If ‘progressives’ use the analogy of rolling a rock up a hill bit by bit, then regressive types would be the reverse of that.

So, get out of the way everyone..we all know what happens when a rock gets rolling on a hill. If we are real lucky it will take out Rand Paul, Bobby Jindal and Ted Cruz. Maybe if we are lucky…many more too.

So Newsweek is back, with a piece identifying the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, as an engineer in california. That’s his real name, not a pseudonym, as many expected.

Unfortunately, the piece says he has $400 million worth of bitcoins, shows him, his modest house, his license plate, and makes it really easy to find him.

So basically he’s like a middle-class guy, suddenly with major security concerns.

My wife got a scam phone call yesterday on her cell phone from someone claiming they are from Microsoft and told her he was calling because she had a virus on her computer. She said she wasn’t home and he said he would call her on Saturday. The scary thing is he knew her name.

I got one of those about a year and a half or so back. The guy got done with his ‘you got a virus’ spiel, and I asked him if they’d checked the beta API drivers. He wibbled, repeated a thing about a virus.

“Hey buddy, let me give you some advice. The next time you try to scam someone about computer issues, make sure that you’re not calling a software engineer.”

Had someone try that with a friend. They claimed to be from Windows. No such thing. The guy who got that call asked what time it was in Washington State; when they couldn’t answer, they hung up quick.

It’s a scam to insert malware on computers, and/or open up the computer to the hacker so they can get all kinds of private data, including account numbers, ID information, etc.

I like the episode because we saw more character development than to date. Getting a vested interest in some of the characters, and Coulson’s coming to terms with what was done to him.

Especially liked the Bill Paxon cameo, and that he played against the type from True Lies, where he was a scammer playing a spy. Here, he was the spy/agent with the mad skills. I’d love to see him as a feature/regular on the show, particularly since we know he’s also going after the Clairvoyant (who I’m guessing isn’t a human, but some alien force/creature trying to manipulate those around them).

Also looking forward to Sif’s arrival…

Dkos rec list: The Guardian: Western Expansion Aims Helped Put Fascists And Neo-Nazis in Power in Ukraine

And I get it… Putin is kind of a dictator and Russia can be a bully and homophobic and friendly to pro-Putin oligarchs, and all that.
But there is more to the story when it comes to the conflict in Ukraine, and my perception is that the mainstream media narrative is the one that’s one-sided, incomplete, and therefore, it misinforms.

Of course, I also read alternative news media such as Democracy Now!, AlterNet, truth-out, truth-dig, and others, and for some weird reason I find their coverage more nuanced and well-rounded. But here I’m not going to reference them because (for some reason) some people tend to discount them out of hand.

So instead I’ll reference an article at The Guardian, by Seumas Milne: “The clash in Crimea is the fruit of western expansion - The external struggle to dominate Ukraine has put fascists in power and brought the country to the brink of conflict”:

Wisconsin Senate leader fast tracks bill to allow in-session lobbyist checks

As the legislative session winds down, the state Senate’s leader is putting on the fast track a bill to rewrite campaign finance law to allow lobbyists to hand off clients’ campaign checks to lawmakers and other elected officials during the legislative session.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) is promoting the bill alongside one that would address when groups running political ads must disclose their spending. Supporters say that measure would simply put existing rules in law; opponents contend it would make it easier for groups to avoid disclosure.

Agreed.

Paxton pretty much rocked, but the characterizaion in his very first scenes was… a little flabby? (Nitpicks, nitpicks.)

Also, re: the Clairvoyant. Part of me really wants him/it to be M.O.D.O.K.

AoS is very much in the Firefly-type build-up… enough early eps with “one cool thing enough per episode” to keep me watching the next ep until I got invested.

re: #116 jonhendry

So Newsweek is back, with a piece identifying the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, as an engineer in california. That’s his real name, not a pseudonym, as many expected.

Unfortunately, the piece says he has $400 million worth of bitcoins, shows him, his modest house, his license plate, and makes it really easy to find him.

So basically he’s like a middle-class guy, suddenly with major security concerns.

I just checked the Bitcoin subreddit. There are some there who just cannot believe that the inventor of Bitcoin, who wrote a paper under the name Satoshi Nakamoto, is in fact named Satoshi Nakamoto. His background sounds like something out of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

What’s more disturbing, in a way, is how the reporter managed to track him down, using public records, interviewing his associates and family members, and getting his email from a UK firm he ordered model train parts from. She’s a sharp reporter, for sure, but her success in finding him shows how even the most private person does not have 100% privacy.

I’d have used a different pen name, myself. Just sayin’.

James Sensenbrenner ambushed by right-wing video maker

U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Menomonee Falls, has drawn national media attention over comments he made at a town hall meeting in Ixonia about a bill he has proposed to update the Voting Rights Act.

It all started when James O’Keefe, a right-wing provocateur who has sparked controversy by releasing a number of deceptively edited videos of public officials, accused Sensenbrenner of writing a bill that will allow for discrimination against white voters.

It’s an odd accusation to toss at Sensenbrenner, an arch-conservative who represents an overwhelmingly white district. However, many conservatives have long been puzzled by the veteran congressman’s fierce advocacy for the Voting Rights Act.

By blocking the inlet with that ship they have managed (maybe) to do two things. Trap the Ukrainian fleet in port while at the same time freeing up Black Sea assets that would have to be stationed at the mouth of the inlet to keep the fleet locked in for other missions.

It’s actually a pretty simple and effective plan. If it works.

I really need to get into audio books more. Need to read the Brands’ Jackson bio. I hear it’s better than the Meacham one since Brands is more of a scholar than Meacham is. I want someone who isn’t a crook to write a single volume Nixon bio. Seriously, two of the Nixon bios are by convicted cons.

James Sensenbrenner ambushed by right-wing video maker

It’s a meme originated by Andrew Breitbart’s “little buddy” James O’Keefe.

The “logic” seems to be: Eric Holder and Barack Obama are left-liberal blacks who want to expand black representation in Congress at the expense of white representation. They want to update the Voting Rights Acts to make the titles in it that were deactivated by the Supreme Court active again by writing new criteria that will pass constitutional muster.

James Sensenbrenner also wants to update the Voting Rights Act and reactivate the relevant titles (those dealing with preclearance). Therefore James Sensenbrenner wants to enable Barack Obama and Eric Holder to discriminate against white voters.

The error here is the attachment of a nonexistent malice to actions of Obama and Holder.

The real error is Jimmy O’Keefe not being a pariah. I mean one would think that the ACORN stunt combined with the attempt to illegally tap Senator Landrieu’s office would make Jimmy into an embarrassment but that’s the Breitbart way I guess- reward shitty behavior.

Paul Ryan poverty report panned by researchers cited in it

Researchers cited in U.S. House budget chairman Paul Ryan’s scholarly preface to the Republican budget say the report selectively uses data to discredit the 50-year-old War on Poverty.

“Several economists and social scientists contacted on Monday had reactions ranging from bemusement to anger at Ryan’s report, claiming that he either misunderstood or misrepresented their research,” reports Rob Garver of the Fiscal Times.

The 240-page report “The War on Poverty: 50 years later” released this week is a departure from past approaches Ryan has taken to introduce his budget proposals, which aim to balance the budget by slashing the social safety net.

“Ryan is very good at marshaling faux scholarship churned out by ideologues in the service of talking points, and at convincing reporters that he is an actual policy wonk,” writes Jonathan Chait of the Daily Intelligencer. “Unfortunately, he seems to have convinced himself and undertaken the ambitious goal of reconciling his policies with the work of real researchers. That was a bad, bad move.”

Exclusive: Russia wants IMF to move ahead on reforms without U.S. - sources

Russian officials are pushing for the International Monetary Fund to move ahead with planned reforms without the United States, which could mean the loss of the U.S. veto over major decisions at the global lender, sources said.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov brought up the idea at a meeting of top finance officials from the Group of 20 nations in Sydney late last month, two G20 sources told Reuters this week.

The failure of the U.S. Congress to approve IMF funding has held up reforms agreed in 2010 that would double the Fund’s resources and give more say to emerging markets like China.

The United States is the only country that holds a controlling share of IMF votes, meaning its approval is necessary for any major decision to go forward.

Moving ahead on reforms without Washington would likely require complicated changes to the IMF’s rules. But the discussions show the level of frustration within the G20 with the Obama administration’s inability to win the needed congressional support.

It’d be one thing if the ULA rockets had a significant launch capability that Space X didn’t.

But Falcon Heavy (to be launched for first time this year) and Falcon 9 are comparable to what ULA can do - especially once the Heavy gets its certifications and begins flying.

The ULA benefits from a cozy relationship that’s been developed over decades of Boeing and Lockheed separately developing rocket lines, and building them in facilities across the nation. They’ve spread out the jobs/economic benefits, so cutting their contract or opening it up to competition means that those states could lose business to a cheaper alternative.

I’m all for it, particularly since the Falcon 9 has shown itself to be reliable. But the Falcon can’t put up as much to LEO or GTO as the Delta 4 or Atlas V at the moment. That’s why the Heavy is needed.

We’re at the point where we see the so called proponents of the free market in the GOP fighting to maintain a duopoly/monopoly to save local jobs that government funds supposedly can’t or shouldn’t create because that’s something the private sector does.

But to actually say that the administration has given material support to terrorism is a pathetic statement that borders on sedition and treason. And it’s one that the organizers of this circle jerk know to be false but they do it anyhow because they know their idiotic base loves the idea of President Obama being a terrorist sympathizer. SpaceX is pressing ahead with the man rating for its Dragon vehicle and should have it within a couple of years. Dragon has already flown operationally to the Space Station and needs only the proper certification to start flying crew. Rather than a hopeless attempt to compete with this, the legacy contractors will probably call in their cronies and shills to throw as many bureaucratic and legislative roadblocks in the way as possible. One thing about this — that person just joined the site today. But, IMO, there are worse statements under that original article you linked. I went ahead and read it, and read all of the comments. The good news is that most of the comments were against the article, and the vast majority of the ‘updings’ were against the article. There were maybe 20 or 30 people that agreed with the writer. And, some of the ‘good’ comments were very informative, intelligent, etc.

However, all in all, I agree with your points. I take long breaks from that site, and mostly read the headlines with the occasional article these days.
