It was Democrats who attacked Fort Sumter, too.
In my experience, these kinds of anachronistic talking points, absurd to us, really do mean something to the GOP base. Their fundamentalist mindset involves finding a label, “Christian,” “husband,” “wife,” “athlete,” etc., defining it, then trying to conform to it. This is why they are so big on the “no true Scotsman” fallacy, if they do not repudiate part of their chosen label’s definition, they must live up to it themselves or find a new label. Living up to the label is all important. For example, they support trickle-down economics not because they think they really know enough to determine whether it is a good idea, but because they have heard that it is part and parcel of being a “conservative.”
They naturally expect (indeed, try to require) others to do likewise. If they can associate “racism” with “Democrat,” and current Democrats do not try to repudiate the facts of history with a “no true Scotsman” response, the association is considered valid. The timing does not matter at all since these are people who imagine that they base their own lives on conforming to labels shaped thousands of years ago. Democrats are therefore hypocrites or at least inconsistent for denying part of the identity to which they are putatively required to conform.

Ryan insisted that liberals were only offering people “a full stomach and an empty soul.”

He then told a story of a “young boy from a very poor family” who received free lunches at school “from a government program.”

“He didn’t want a free lunch,” Ryan insisted. “He wanted his own lunch, one in a brown paper bag, just like the other kids.”

“He wanted one, he said, because he knew a kid with a brown paper bag had someone who cared for him. This is what the left does not understand.”

Obviously the answer is to cut off Food Stamps.

Let’s do some fact-checking on that infographic.

Who started the KKK?
Nathan Bedford Forrest, a former Confederate Lieutenant General and war criminal (Fort Pillow massacre). He held no political office during his lifetime, so there is no indication as to what party he belonged to.

Who supported the KKK?
Southern conservatives formerly with the Confederacy.
To make this point perfectly clear, the KKK-affiliated “White Citizens Councils” are now known as the “Council of Conservative Citizens”, and have not changed their racist views at all. Claiming they are associated at all with modern Democrats is pure fantasy.

Who created Jim Crow laws?
Southern conservatives known as “Dixiecrats”.
See “KKK” entry for further details

Who enforced them?
Southern governments and law enforcement under the guise of “States’ Rights” - which is still a favorite among the Tea Party Republicans.

Who arrested MLK?
Assuming this is directed toward his most famous arrest in Birmingham, Alabama in April 1963. The Commissioner of Public Safety who directed the arrest, the denial of King’s Constitutional rights during and after the arrest, as well as directing acts of violence toward African-American protestors was Eugene “Bull” Connor, a pro-segregationist “Dixiecrat” who ran for Governor several times in the 1940s-1950s. He also was responsible for the arrest of (former) progressive Democratic Vice President Henry Wallace on the charge of violating segregation laws.

Who opposed Civil Rights Legislation?
Who fought against the right of black Americans to vote?
Southern segregationist conservatives.
Here’s the actual voting record, broken down by party and geographic region.

Congressional vote on Civil Rights Act - by party and region

As a result of this vote and the one for the Voting Rights Acts - both of which membership of the Republican Party TODAY are fighting tooth and nail to repeal - Harry Dent, Jr, Pat Buchanan and Lee Atwater orchestrated the Southern Strategy to get Southern conservatives into the fold of the Republican Party. With the election of Ronald Reagan, this takeover of the party succeeded.

CPAC minority outreach panel: “Democrats go into minority communities and give them free stuff. How can we compete with that?”

119 Shiplord Kirel  Thu, Mar 6, 2014 11:35:55am

I can understand the conservative mindset, the desire to keep the unknown and the unfamiliar at bay, to be suspicious of change in favor of the tried and true.

For example, in the rural California town where I grew up, everyone’s dad was either a Ford guy or a Chevy guy. Oh, there were a few exceptions: The odd crank, like the scary old fart with the deer heads and the reloading gear, would have a Dodge. The local fatcats had their own high dollar version of the Ford/Chevy divide, with Lincolns and Cadillacs. Once in a while one of the real oddballs, like the high school drama teacher, would show up with a Volkswagen or some communistic contraption like a Renault. Generally though the Ford/Chevy line held for ordinary people. My dad was a Chevy guy, so I became a Chevy guy too. The thing is, this preference persisted for decades, pretty much unconsciously, and I feel twinges of it to this day, even with all the other cars I have owned.
Change is the norm today, has been for a long time. Those who fear it viscerally are likely to be very fearful indeed. It is obvious how the unscrupulous and greedy can exploit this fear.

You could try not being bigoted dicks. Is that really so hard conservatives? Bush got 40% of the Hispanic vote by simply treating them like human beings. Imagine how you’d do if you actually looked at issues important to minority communities but no keep on blah blahing about “free stuff” and likening the fact that Black people support Democrats to chattel slavery, it’s a total winner!

Yeah against our very popular former governor. Mark Warner’s going ot make Ed Gillespie wished he had never even considered running for office. To put things in perspective, Warner beat a former governor in his first election by well over 20%. It wouldn’t shock me if Ed lost by the same margin and this will be a non-presidential year so turnout will be down and favoring Ed.

I think that tells the story along with the usual bs about free stuff. Conservatives don’t think racial minority outreach should be done or the few that do think it should be done do it with condescending bullshit about minorities wanting free stuff and that’s why they vote Democratic. There’s no self awareness about what conservatives have done to get themselves a negative image in minority communities. They just think they can have these stupid memes where they point out that the Dems were a white supremacist party generations ago and ignore the fact that while the Democratic party evolved positively on racial issues, the Republican Party went looking for Strom Thurmond and George Wallace’s base.

re: #163 HappyWarrior

Pretty much. In the early 90s, the Asian American population in Washington state was 50/50 Dem/Rep. There were equal number of Asian American elected officials for both parties. And the state Dem. leader then put his foot into it by referring to some Asian American delegates as “them stupid Japs.”
Talk about being served up with the perfect opportunity on a platter.

The state Republican party DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WITH THIS. No increased effort. No grooming of potential candidates. No outreach to Washington Asian Americans.

And now the state Asian American population is solidly Democratic (at least 63/37) and elected officials are heavily Democratic.

Somebody Is Stealing Children To Put In Paul Ryan Speeches!

Ryan’s paper bag shpiel appears to have come out of a book called The Invisible Thread.

The story has a grain of truth in it, kids want to feel loved and kids want to fit in with their peers. If everyone at school brought watercress sandwiches in vintage Jetsons lunchboxes that’s what he’d want too.
What that has to do with not offering kids who don’t have enough to eat a free meal at school escapes me.

I thought this was settled at least 75 years ago.
Note left for female pilot: Cockpit ‘no place for a woman’

“The cockpit of an airliner is no place for a woman,” began the note scrawled on a napkin and left behind by a passenger on a recent WestJet flight from Calgary to Victoria, B.C.

“Were (sic) short mothers, not pilots” continued the note, signed by “David,” and also referenced a biblical verse. The passenger wrote he wished the airline would tell him when “a fair lady is at the helm” so he can be sure to “book another flight.”

The plane’s pilot, Carey Steacy, shared the note on her Facebook page with a response that said, in part, “I have heard many comments from people throughout my 17 year career as a pilot. Most of them positive… You were more than welcome to deplane when you heard I was a ‘fair lady.’”

The flag should not be used as “wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery”, or for covering a speaker’s desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general (exception for coffins). Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.[6]

The decent thing to do is to not make outlandish claims in the first place. The justice system is built on the responsibility of government to provide legal counsel and protections to all defendants if they cannot afford one on their own. That especially goes for capital cases. I might not have the stomach personally to take up that task, but others do. And it’s vital that they do.

I certainly wouldn’t hold that against a defense lawyer in a capital case, regardless of that person’s political affiliations either.

In a way, I think anyone who is seeking a spot on the bench should have to represent someone in a capital case, to see the world from that perspective.

re: #319 lawhawk

The justice system is built on the responsibility of government to provide legal counsel and protections to all defendants if they cannot afford one on their own. That especially goes for capital cases. I might not have the stomach personally to take up that task, but others do. And it’s vital that they do.

I certainly wouldn’t hold that against a defense lawyer in a capital case, regardless of that person’s political affiliations either.

In a way, I think anyone who is seeking a spot on the bench should have to represent someone in a capital case, to see the world from that perspective.

Anyone, no matter how heinous the crime with which they’re charged—anyone accused of a criminal offense has the right to any and all defenses provided by the justice system. It is a Constitutional right that too many people don’t understand or even care about, until they, of course, need it. So many want retribution they forget about the right to a trial, by a jury of one’s peers. It’s what makes the law in the the US unique as opposed to, say, China, or really, every other country. It’s what makes us civilized as a people.

A lawyer doesn’t have to like his or her clients, but are required, as an officer of the court, to defend them to the best of their ability.

I don’t think you can tell the difference, since the results of any test you might run must be perceived by one of you senses, which could be manipulated.

But, if you treat the universe as if it actually exists, it responds accordingly. That’s good enough for me.

I once had some friends talk me into a 5 day trip to Reno. I remember the first day I saw a guy in a leopard print sport coat, really bad poly double knit. Thought that was the tackiest thing in the world. By day 5, I was wondering if was available in a 40 short.

When I was in Vegas, I spent my time away from CES investigating the food options and cursing the fact that I wasn’t going to have time to see any shows. For me, that would be the main reason to go to Vegas — book a weekend at a hotel, pick a couple of shows to go see, and then hit up some of the restaurants. I’m not much of a gambler. The ARGUMENT is EVIL… the FALLACY is GOOD!

re: #404 Lidane

When I was in Vegas, I spent my time away from CES investigating the food options and cursing the fact that I wasn’t going to have time to see any shows. For me, that would be the main reason to go to Vegas — book a weekend at a hotel. pick a couple of shows to go see, and then hit up some of the restaurants. I’m not much of a gambler. I think next time I go I might play a few hands of blackjack just to say I gambled in Vegas, then go on my merry way.

I usually just play slots until I win a couple hundred bucks, then walk away.

I was in Vegas a few years ago photographing a Twisted Sister show and didn’t gamble anything until the night before I went home. Put a 20 in a dollar slot machine, 3 pulls, won $200, cashed out.

I only play slots because my gambling skills are best described as ‘meager.’

Yuppers.

THE GUN IS GOOD, THE PENIS IS EVIL.

POPCORN IS ALSO EVIL. ITS A WHOLE SEEDS THING. IT JUST DOESN’T COME UP THAT OFTEN IN THE POST-APOCALYPTIC WASTELAND. THE BRUTALS DISTINCTLY LACKED THE OPTION TO JUST STAY HOME WITH SOME JIFFY POP.

Ah, but what if the bad person with a gun shoots the good person with a gun, then takes his gun?

Then you have a bad person with two guns.

What if the good person accidentally shoots thru the wall, wounding his neighbor, who then think the first guy is a bad guy?

So many variables.

OK, so I’m late here.

re: #396 Lidane

Sure. But I find it difficult to believe that a guy who is that obviously drunk to the point where he supposedly couldn’t read his cards would be allowed to bet that kind of money. It leaves a casino far too open to lawsuits like this.

It does. I work in the Gaming industry. All servers of alcoholic beverages, security and management are required to go through a TIPS class in order to prevent situations like this from occurring. If this individual prevails in his suit, the casino and those who served him are facing large fines and potential loss of liquor and or gaming license if they have a previous history of this behavior.

This will be one of the things that the NGCB will be looking into as they investigate.

True dat. Someone was going to run an experiment to see if this universe is real or a Matrix style simulation, which he judged more probable. I haven’t heard if the experiment was conducted or what the results were.

Agent Smith deleted him.

Amen. I’ve been to Vegas once (and loathed it, as it was on the same vacation as when I saw the Grand Canyon, and it was impossible not to contrast the tacky, garish phoniness of Vegas with the awe-inspiring splendor of the canyon), won $80 on slots, called it a night, and bought drinks and a cab ride with the money.

I’ve been there once myself. It was for an IBM convention. I lost some money over the week, but nothing I didn’t expect to lose. The Grand Canyon was great. Walked out on the Skywalk, that got the blood rushing.
