Demolishing the Right Wing’s “Democrats are the Party of Racism” Meme

A little history
History • Views: 68,872

This image and others like it are making the rounds within conservative and other Tea Party-affiliated social media.

Rightwing meme on race

In favor of accuracy, below is a fact-check on each of these points:

Who started the KKK?

Nathan Bedford Forrest, a former Confederate Lieutenant General and war criminal (Fort Pillow massacre). He held no political office during his lifetime, so there is no indication as to what party he belonged to.

Who supported the KKK?

Southern conservatives formerly with the Confederacy.

To make this point perfectly clear, the KKK-affiliated “White Citizens Councils” are now known as the “Council of Conservative Citizens,” and have not changed their racist views at all. Claiming they are associated at all with modern Democrats is pure fantasy.

Who created Jim Crow laws?

Southern conservatives known as “Dixiecrats”. (See “KKK” entry for further details.)

Who enforced them?

Southern governments and law enforcement under the guise of “States’ Rights” - which is still a favorite among the Tea Party Republicans.

Who arrested MLK?

Assuming this is directed toward his most famous arrest in Birmingham, Alabama in April 1963. The Commissioner of Public Safety who directed the arrest, the denial of King’s Constitutional rights during and after the arrest, as well as directing acts of violence toward African-American protestors was Eugene “Bull” Connor, a pro-segregationist “Dixiecrat” who ran for Governor several times in the 1940s-1950s. He also was responsible for the arrest of (former) progressive Democratic Vice President Henry Wallace on the charge of violating segregation laws.

Who opposed Civil Rights Legislation?
Who fought against the right of black Americans to vote?

Southern segregationist conservatives. Here’s the actual voting record, broken down by party and geographic region:

Congressional vote on Civil Rights Act - by party and region - Source: Wikipedia (click to enlarge)

As a result of this vote and the one for the Voting Rights Acts - both of which membership of the Republican Party TODAY are fighting tooth and nail to repeal - Harry Dent, Sr, Pat Buchanan and Lee Atwater orchestrated the Southern Strategy to get Southern conservatives into the fold of the Republican Party. With the election of Ronald Reagan, this takeover of the party succeeded.

I would add that the KKK still exists, and they’re not voting Democrat.

They’re into “small government” because they believe in conspiracies about international Zionism and multiculturalism…to say nothing of the intersection of white supremacy and sovereign citizen movements. They’re into “traditional Christian values” because they’ve built a theology in which Christianity is about white people being pure. Their policies on gender and sexuality are retrograde, because ultimately sex and childbirth is something done to further the white race. Their foreign policy is alternately isolationist or imperialist…because brown people are to be avoided or conquered, not handled as equals.

It’s a freaking cult. It really is. A cult of reality denying bigoted bastards with no business being in any office higher than Office Max.

3 Kragar  Thu, Mar 6, 2014 2:07:50pm

The KKK actually has gone thru 3 distinct iterations.

The first was the original founded after the Civil War.

The second was a white nationalist, anti-immigrant group founded in the 1920s.

The third was the post WWII group established to fight the Civil Rights movement.

The great thing about this pathetic attempt to shift blame for racism to the Democrats is that it’s really racist, in that it basically says that black people are all easily fooled and ignorant and don’t understand the true racist history of the Democratic party.

The fact that Asians support Democrats at a higher rate than any other minority really ought to make the GOP figure out their shit is whack.

However, the GOP displays a kind of further racism by just not giving a shit about Asians, and not even being aware that Asians don’t support them. Most GOP people I hear talking about Asians still praise them as a ‘model minority’ and think that they vote Republican.

My mom dyes hers red because she always wanted to be a natural redhead like her mom. She was so happy when she saw my son.

re: #3 Kragar

The KKK actually has gone thru 3 distinct iterations.

The first was the original founded after the Civil War.

The second was a white nationalist, anti-immigrant group founded in the 1920s.

The third was the post WWII group established to fight the Civil Rights movement.

All three versions did have a history of violent racism.

Probably the biggest difference between the 1920s-1940s version of the Klan and the Civil Rights Era-present group is that during the World War II years, the KKK was virulently anti-Nazi, and Adolf Hitler actually banned the group from Germany during the days of the Third Reich. Of course, nowadays, the neo-Confederate KKK and white supremacist neo-Nazis are heavily intermingled with each other, and it is not uncommon for them to march together.

Gen Dempsey: ‘Two years’ to overcome Snowden leak

bbc.com

“It will take the US two years and possibly billions of dollars to overcome the harm done by Edward Snowden’s intelligence leaks, the top-ranking US military officer has said.

(snip)

“Gen Dempsey, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, told the House armed services committee on Thursday that a mitigation task force had been established to investigate the extent of Mr Snowden’s theft and to determine how to overcome it.

“We’re working our way through that which we believe he has exfiltrated,” Gen Dempsey said. “And we have, I think, a fairly significant amount of knowledge in that regard.”

RadicalModerate,

Another thing you might also want to point out, is that while its true that the South was controlled by the Democrats for a long time, and the South was strongly democrat during the Civil War, to try use this fact to argue that the democratic party today is a racist party is ridiculous. Both political parties have changed radically between now and the Civil War. In fact both the Democratic and Republican parties are really different than they were in 1950s or the 1960’s so to attack either party today on what most people in them supported over a century ago, or even fifty years ago, is pretty much fallacious.

It’s also worth noting that the 1860 election split the Democrats into two factions. There were the National (read: Northern) Democrats with their slate of candidates and the Constitutional (read: Southern) Democrats:

There were also two different Democratic platforms in 1860:

Northern — presidency.ucsb.edu

Southern — presidency.ucsb.edu

“Nathan Bedford Forrest” He started the 1st Klan and also dissolved it.

2nd Klan was a Protestant anti-Immigrant and anti-Catholic organization. It was also anti-War and pro-Temperance, women’s rights, and Zionist. 2nd Klan was also very Northern. By the time 2nd Klan comes about around 1914 Jim Crow is settled law so it was not a big issue with them.

Hunt around Wikipedia for more Klan info.

I personally see not much similarity between political parties now and their earlier incarnations. Once upon a time the Democrats (Grover Cleveland) were the party of fiscal austerity in the face of a pensions crisis sparked by Republicans (Benjamin Harrison). The first civil rights attorney, Chester Arthur, was also a Republican President, so what.

Asian-Americans Solidly Prefer Democrats
Sixty-one percent of young adult Asian-Americans identify as/lean Democratic

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Asian-Americans — who were a key part, if sometimes overlooked, of President Barack Obama’s 2012 electoral coalition — solidly back the Democratic Party, with 57% identifying as or leaning Democratic, compared with 28% identifying as or leaning Republican. Thirteen percent are “pure” independents. However, the data suggest that a substantial portion of Asian-Americans are not entirely wedded to either of the major political parties: 46% first describe themselves as independent or other, and only when asked if they “lean” Republican or Democratic does the Democratic Party garner its majority support within this group.

Politics

As the leader of the SCLC, King maintained a policy of not publicly endorsing a U.S. political party or candidate: “I feel someone must remain in the position of non-alignment, so that he can look objectively at both parties and be the conscience of both—not the servant or master of either.”[33] In a 1958 interview, he expressed his view that neither party was perfect, saying, “I don’t think the Republican party is a party full of the almighty God nor is the Democratic party. They both have weaknesses … And I’m not inextricably bound to either party.”[34]

King critiqued both parties’ performance on promoting racial equality:

Actually, the Negro has been betrayed by both the Republican and the Democratic party. The Democrats have betrayed him by capitulating to the whims and caprices of the Southern Dixiecrats. The Republicans have betrayed him by capitulating to the blatant hypocrisy of reactionary right wing northern Republicans. And this coalition of southern Dixiecrats and right wing reactionary northern Republicans defeats every bill and every move towards liberal legislation in the area of civil rights.[35]

Although King never publicly supported a political party or candidate for president, in a letter to a civil rights supporter in October 1956 he said that he was undecided as to whether he would vote for Adlai Stevenson or Dwight Eisenhower, but that “In the past I always voted the Democratic ticket.”[36] In his autobiography, King says that in 1960 he privately voted for Democratic candidate John F. Kennedy: “I felt that Kennedy would make the best president. I never came out with an endorsement. My father did, but I never made one.” King adds that he likely would have made an exception to his non-endorsement policy for a second Kennedy term, saying “Had President Kennedy lived, I would probably have endorsed him in 1964.”[37]

Conservatives will support any rabidly crazy nutball who panders to them.
