Tech Note: Simple Embedding of Getty Images in Comments and LGF Pages

Photos by the millions, now free to embed
LGF • Views: 14,375

Our new feature of the day: you can now very easily embed photographs from Getty Images into a comment or an LGF Page, simply by copying and pasting Getty’s embed code into the editing area.

As we mentioned a couple of days ago, Getty Images now allows us to embed millions of the photographs in their vast library. This new LGF feature lets you post any Getty Image photo that has an embed code (lots of the pictures have the code, but some don’t).

If a photo can be embedded, you’ll see this when you hover your mouse over it:

Just click that embed button, copy the iframe code you see, and paste it into an LGF comment or Page; that’s all there is to it. Our back-end code handles scaling the image to fit, so it doesn’t get cut off if it’s too large.

Note: On some pages at Getty’s website, there’s no hover effect — you need to click the photo’s thumbnail image to open a popup window. Also, with some images, you won’t see the embed button in the hover dialog — but it does appear if you click the thumbnail. They still haven’t standardized this throughout the site, obviously.

This is an absolutely phenomenal resource for adding images and making your posts more interesting and colorful; Getty has breaking news photos from the best photographers in the world, and millions of archival photos for every kind of use.

(And I believe LGF is the first site to enable users to easily embed this enormous library of images.)

And by the way, our back-end software actually transforms that Getty Images iframe code into our own embed code, that’s much more secure than allowing users to post iframes willy nilly.

Security is a prime consideration whenever I add a new feature.

There seems to be a small bug in the Getty Images code that causes a little extra white space on the right side of the image in some pictures. You can see it in some of the ones I posted above.

I don’t see any of that, but I have been getting long blank tails on tweets that contain images. Mostly I see that in the Spy, but sometimes on threads too. Goes away with a refresh, than sneaks back in.

Working on computer. Go to breakfast. Come back: one monitor is dead. Therefore, breakfast destroys monitors, especially 22” Dells.

Will try a 30” monitor next, see if that survives brunch tomorrow.

In her remarks to the 2014 Conservative Political Action Conference, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) told the assembled crowd that the Tea Party and conservative movements will triumph over progressivism because of the right’s unstoppable intellectual firepower.

“You see our movement at its core is an intellectual movement,” she said from the CPAC podium. “We are based on the greatest ideas ever conceived in the mind of man. And I would put those magnificent ideas up against any other idea for freedom in the world.”

Carson wanted to set straight some “lies” progressives were telling about him. “I still believe that marriage is between a man and a woman,” said Carson, and when the applause died down continued, “and because I happen to mention that nobody gets to change the definition of marriage… progressives say I equate homosexuality and bestiality.” (They also say he apologized for saying whatever it was he said, but that can’t be true, since he said nothing offensive.)

Nor, Carson said, did he ever say “Obamacare and slavery are the same thing.” What he said, according to the Washington Post, was, “Obamacare is really I think the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery”; but what he really meant, Carson patiently explained, was that the government “has shifted the power that was given to us, it’s the most massive shift in power in America that has ever occurred,” which is not slavery. Also, Carson said, “In Germany people did not believe it what Hitler was doing and they didn’t speak up,” which was not the same thing as “progressives are Nazis” even though he was explicitly talking about Obama and America. Yet progressives “repeat these lies because they cannot argue the actual facts.”

The punch line: Carson then accused progressives of “demonizing” conservatives.

The sort of EPIC FAIL that FAST & FURIOUS represented wasn’t a ‘nontroversy’, and you shouldn’t say it was. What it was was an agency-level scandal. The media tends to try to give any major scandal some sort of Cabinet-or-higher hook, even when its not really appropriate.

My cynical take on it is that the real “scandal” of Fast and Furious for the US hard right is the following two-parter:

1) That the ATF agency exists in the first place.

2) That the ATF agency attempted to do anything about enforcing straw sales laws that are currently on the books.

I’m having an issue in FIrefox with the Getty images.

Each time a new one is added to the thread, it results in the text of subsequent comments overlapping the comment box. As opposed to the comment box scrolling down as new comments appear.

Ever since you added the Getty Images functionality, Charles, I’ve been seeing this weird bug off and on on the latest version of Chrome on WinXP (work) and Win8.1 (home):

Sometimes, a refresh will clear it up, but sometimes not.

They have no one…

Not only that, but they look like women to me.

TedStriker’s seeing the same thing as me.

I restarted FF. I’m up-to-date on updates…running 27.0.1

I don’t have anti-adware active for this site, nor script-stopping.

re: #132 Justanotherhuman

Oh, wait—that was the Senate Cons Fund poll, not CPAC, where he lost.

Hmmm, can’t duplicate it — but I just made a change that may help. I suspect it’s happening because the iframe isn’t fully initialized before the scrolling happens.
