Lee Stranahan Re-Hired, Then Re-Fired by Breitbart “News”

Life in the Breitbart “News” sleaze pit

Lee Stranahan, formerly with Breitbart “News”

When Daily Caller wingnuts deliver a smackdown to Breitbart “News” wingnuts, we all win!

The Daily Caller’s Betsy Rothstein gives us a look into the Breitbart sleaze pit, as Texas weirdo Lee Stranahan is first re-hired, then re-fired by the jolly elves who run the site Andrew built.

And these are some very jolly fellows indeed. When Stranahan first tried to get his job back after his snit fit walk-out:

Fast forward five months later. It’s February, Stranahan is broke and looking for work. He’s told through Darby that Bannon says he can possibly return, but only if he comes “bellycrawling” back to the site. Meaning, begging will be required. Stranahan says Bannon now denies ever saying it.

And Stranahan found himself on the receiving end of another bit of editorial pranksmanship:

At most news organizations, if a journalist wants out, your bosses don’t want you there. Who wants to keep someone who doesn’t want to be there? At a place like Politico, they might badmouth you for awhile, whispering that the person was never that good, no big loss. But at Breitbart, whispering would be kind. Here they use legal measures to make you stay until they are good and ready to dump you.

Last week Stranahan was working under Darby, the Texas “bureau” chief. But by the week’s end declared that he would not work with Stranahan. He killed one of his stories - (this one) - and insisted he wouldn’t publish any more. Hours later, Stranahan says, he was fired.

OK, now that’s sounding kind of harsh, wouldn’t you agree? If they’re dishing out this kind of abuse, Breitbart “News” must at least be paying their writers decent fees, right? Why else would anyone want to work with them?

Stranahan is among the old school Breitbartians, the ones who miss Andrew Breitbart desperately and don’t like what the new regime under the site’s “Executive Chairman” Steve Bannon has become. But that’s all a side story. This one has everything do with Darby, Stranahan’s supervisor in the Breitbart “Texas” bureau, where Stranahan had been employed as a contributor since last month, earning $100 per story.

Sure, they may all be complete a-holes who treat employees like serfs, but at least they pay a pittance for the privilege!

Right wing journalism at its finest, folks.

Oh, and on Twitter, I’ve been seeing some tweets like these as the wingnutosphere begins lining up to smear Stranahan (not that he doesn’t deserve it):

What? You mean Lee Stranahan ripped you off by promising a hit piece on … little old me?

Looks like you got played, suckers.

Chiune Sugihara

As the Soviet Union occupied sovereign Lithuania in 1940, many Jewish refugees from Poland (Polish Jews) as well as Lithuanian Jews tried to acquire exit visas. Without the visas, it was dangerous to travel, yet it was impossible to find countries willing to issue them. Hundreds of refugees came to the Japanese consulate in Kaunas, trying to get a visa to Japan. The Dutch consul Jan Zwartendijk had provided some of them with an official third destination to Curaçao, a Caribbean island and Dutch colony that required no entry visa, or Surinam (which, upon independence in 1975, became Suriname). At the time, the Japanese government required that visas be issued only to those who had gone through appropriate immigration procedures and had enough funds. Most of the refugees did not fulfill these criteria. Sugihara dutifully contacted the Japanese Foreign Ministry three times for instructions. Each time, the Ministry responded that anybody granted a visa should have a visa to a third destination to exit Japan, with no exceptions.[2]

From 18 July to 28 August 1940, aware that applicants were in danger if they stayed behind, Sugihara began to grant visas on his own initiative, after consulting with his family. He ignored the requirements and issued the Jews with a ten-day visa to transit through Japan, in direct violation of his orders. Given his inferior post and the culture of the Japanese Foreign Service bureaucracy, this was an extraordinary act of disobedience. He spoke to Soviet officials who agreed to let the Jews travel through the country via the Trans-Siberian Railway at five times the standard ticket price.

Sugihara continued to hand write visas, reportedly spending 18-20 hours a day on them, producing a normal month’s worth of visas each day, until 4 September, when he had to leave his post before the consulate was closed. By that time he had granted thousands of visas to Jews, many of whom were heads of households and thus permitted to take their families with them. On the night before their scheduled departure, Sugihara and his wife stayed awake writing out visa approvals. According to witnesses, he was still writing visas while in transit from his hotel and after boarding the train at the Kaunas Railway Station, throwing visas into the crowd of desperate refugees out of the train’s window even as the train pulled out.

In final desperation, blank sheets of paper with only the consulate seal and his signature (that could be later written over into a visa) were hurriedly prepared and flung out from the train. As he prepared to depart, he said, “Please forgive me. I cannot write anymore. I wish you the best.” When he bowed deeply to the people before him, someone exclaimed, “Sugihara. We’ll never forget you. I’ll surely see you again!”[1]

Sugihara himself wondered about official reaction to the thousands of visas he issued. Many years later, he recalled, “No one ever said anything about it. I remember thinking that they probably didn’t realize how many I actually issued.”

He’s also a published novelist. My dad was reading a book one day and I saw the author was Steve Martin. Thought it couldn’t be that Steve Martin but it was. You gotta admire guys like that who have multiple talents like that. A lot of musicians are also really good visual artists. It never ceases to amaze me how some human beings can be so courageous & selfless in the good they do, while yet others are vile & selfish in their wickedness… in pretty much direct inverse proportion to each other.

They adapt ok in growing outdoors here in San Diego, too, as long as you keep the frost off of them.
sborchid.com
Most large flowering Cattleya species, those from lowlands, have a hard time in San Diego. Those from mountainous regions, and thus colder nights, do better in adapting to our chilly winter nights. C. jenmanii seemed to me to be more forgiving of the big temp and humidity swings we get here in SoCal.

The best large South American flowering Cattleyas for outdoor growing around here I found to be Cattleya percivaliana. Dutiful if somewhat strangely fragrant.

Hybrids with C. percivaliana likewise were easy to grow.

I think that’s what strikes me about humanity. Human beings are capable of so much good and so much evil too. It gives one a very nuanced way of looking at the world knowing man’s duality.

I see stories like this and cry angrily, knowing what this child was put through from 2 wks of age. Even though these kind of circumstances may be rare, it could start to be more common, if excuses are continued to be made for these adults, such as the comments of the psychologist about Troung, a grown man with reasoning ability, that he was a victim because he believed what he was told. What is disturbing is that some of these people, like this guy, seem to think they’re not doing anything wrong because someone told them it was all right to sexually abuse young children, not teens, but infants and very young children who have no idea what is happening to them. Are we losing the ability to think for ourselves? I’m not pointing out this particular story (I ran upon it looking for another, different one) because the parents are gay. I’ve seen others involving straight parents and have tried to point those out as well. They are not easy stories to read.

This kind of story isn’t confined to male or female parent, straight or gay, but the result is the same for the infant or child caught up in this—horrible sexual abuse and sex trafficking, and the secret, dark world of online pedophilia. Too often, it’s something we don’t want to talk about, but we ignore it at our own peril.

Fascinating thing is that the smoky-not-quite-purple kind of “orchid” color as that one (Radiant Orchid) is sort of unusual.

Blue is not often found in flowers, and in orchids most lavenders tend to be warm-ish - really ought to be described as ranges of magenta. The Phalaenopsis genus shown in your link also tends to have warmish and weakly colored lavenders. The Vanda alliance of Asian orchids can have the intense, intermediate (between purple and magenta) colors like in your Pantone release.

Most flowers on this planet are either some variant of white or pink. Intensely colored flowers are rather rare in nature.

Well, they’ve only been doing it since 2000, but it’s a pretty big deal for all kinds of designers (fashion, interior, graphic, etc.)—big enough to get mentioned in the New York Times. The closest they’ve ever come to Khaki was in 2006 with a color dubbed Sand Dollar, which looks more pinkish-beige to my eye.

Trivia: Did you know that khaki is actually a Persian word? It means dirt, soil, earth, ground, etc. which is exactly what it looks like (depending on where you live, I suppose). Here it is in Google Translate.

I read about what a total douche the real Captain Phillips is, but I forgot to take it out of the Netflix queue and now here it is.

Worth watching anyway? Because Tom Hanks.

Reminds me of the honeysuckle around here, too. When there’s a lot, it’s cloying, though.

This wasn’t like that. Or at least I don’t think it would have been, but I only had one small bush on my balcony, so I couldn’t really say for sure. The scent wasn’t as sweet as honeysuckle. I can’t even describe it.

re: #56 CuriousLurker

Well, they’ve only been doing it since 2000, but it’s a pretty big deal for all kinds of designers (fashion, interior, graphic, etc.)—big enough to get mentioned in the New York Times. The closest they’ve ever come to Khaki was in 2006 with a color dubbed Sand Dollar, which looks more pinkish-beige to my eye.

>Trivia: Did you know that khaki is actually a Persian word? It means dirt, soil, earth, ground, etc. which is exactly what it looks like (depending on where you live, I suppose). Here it is in Google Translate.

I knew that khaki was Persian, but didn’t know that was what it meant. wasn’t it brought into the english language by the English military when they were stationed and empire building there?

I am NOT a designer / graphics person, (putting it mildly). One friend of mine commented that “You’re the only person in the world I know of that thinks having 4 dark blue polo shirts is that same as having 4 different shirts”.

I do have to admit that one of my ex’s did get me into wearing colors that I wouldn’t have bought for myself, and I can rock some eggplant or pink shirts.

Thanks :)

So, it would work really well for camouflage and army stuff?

Hmmm, I don’t know how it ended up in our vocabulary, but British nation building makes sense.

LOL re the dark blue shirts.

Good on you for not being afraid of color! ;)

You can get Pantone Products in the colors of the year. Like this thumb drive.

Ah, a new thread. Okay, I guess I’ll use that as my cue to call it a night and start getting ready for Monday. Later, lizards.

I had a wallpaper store owner tell me once that most man would live in a cardboard box.

background-I was for a short time a wallpaper hanger. A male customer wanted the showroom of his industrial machine business wallpapered—commercial type paper and told me go get some —“maybe green with stripes”

The wallpaper store owner was also a man. Then proceeded to choose a book and the correct paper —almost without thinking about it.

A new Windows 8.1 update tries to win back desktop diehards

I hope it sucks less.

Not really.

It still uses the stupid touchscreen based start menu. The only way to get the Win 7 desktop friendly menu is using a menu program like ‘Classic Shell’

Al Qaeda Announces New English-Language Terror Magazine

nbcnews.com

Just read this. My first thought when you posted the link was, “Smells of desperation.” Looks like I wasn’t too far off the mark. From the article:

The announcement comes as al Qaeda central has been devastated by drone strikes in western Pakistan over the past several years and the U.S. commando raid that killed the group’s founder and leader, Osama bin Laden, and suggests that the main branch of the organization is trying to reestablish its waning influence over Islamic militants.

So they’re basically trying to con some more Westerners into doing their dirty work for them. Pity the fool who falls for their crap.

Since when do colors get press releases? Did I miss the memo? When is Kakhi going to be color of the year?

Kakhi was color of the year 1977.

See Emmy Rossum of Shameless. Great singer, could’ve been her success, but TV came first.

One of her first big roles was as Christine in the god-awful Joel Schumacher film version of Phantom of the Opera.
