UPDATE at 3/11/14 1:16:22 pm

Any show that can get the Catholic League’s Bill Donohue to defend the Inquisition is OK in my book: “COSMOS” SMEARS CATHOLICISM - Catholic League.

At first I thought he was just going to deny the Catholic Church had anything to do with the Inquisition, but no — he actually defends it as a force for “order and justice.”

The propagandists involved in this show, represented most conspicuously by Seth MacFarlane, told viewers last night that “the Roman Catholic Church maintained a system of courts known as the Inquisition and its sole purpose was to investigate and torment anyone who dared voice views that differed from theirs. And it wasn’t long before [Giordano] Bruno fell into the clutches of the thought police.”

The ignorance is appalling. “The Catholic Church as an institution had almost nothing to do with [the Inquisition],” writes Dayton historian Thomas Madden. “One of the most enduring myths of the Inquisition,” he says, “is that it was a tool of oppression imposed on unwilling Europeans by a power-hungry Church. Nothing could be more wrong.” Because the Inquisition brought order and justice where there was none, it actually “saved uncounted thousands of innocent (and even not-so-innocent) people who would otherwise have been roasted by secular lords or mob rule.” (His emphasis.)

As for Bruno, he was a renegade monk who dabbled in astronomy; he was not a scientist. There is much dispute about what really happened to him. As sociologist Rodney Strong puts it, he got into trouble not for his “scientific” views, but because of his “heretical theology involving the existence of an infinite number of worlds—a work based entirely on imagination and speculation.”

In short, MacFarlane, who is no stranger to the Catholic League, has once again shown his true colors.

We live in a country that guarantees you the right to free speech, but it’s not a country that guarantees anything you say is correct.

And it was another “I was just cleaning the gun” accident…and the darned thing went off TWICE!!

According to police, Ventura Mateo Santos was in the garage at his Le Mesa Street home showing a friend how to clean a gun, when he accidentally fired the Sig Sauer P223 handgun. The bullet hit a passing car and went into the arm of the young girl, who was a passenger in the car.

Police said that just after firing the first shot, Santos accidentally fired the gun again, hitting himself in the leg and shattering his left thigh bone.

No, today’s “Florida Gun story” is here:

Judge rules against FL man’s use of Stand Your Ground defense in deputy’s shooting

A circuit judge ruled on Friday that 24-year-old Keenan Finkelstein, who is accused of shooting a Escambia County Sheriff’s deputy last March, cannot use the state’s controversial ‘Stand Your Ground Law’ as a defense.

On the night of March 20, 2013, authorities were actively searching for Jonathan Chappell in connection to a robbery that occurred earlier that day and resulted in a handgun and marijuana being stolen from a nearby residence.

Finkelstein had been drinking and smoking pot with Chappell just minutes before Sgt. Shedrick Johnson showed up at Finkelstein’s home looking for Chappell.

During a confrontation outside of his home, Finkelstein, who has a concealed weapons permit, shot Johnson in the leg, a move which Finkelstein claims was self-defense.

Stand Your Ground does not apply if the person who was shot was known by the shooter to be a police officer or if the shooter reasonably should have known that. Keenan Finkelstein is effectively toast behind this.

The charges against him have been reduced from attempted murder to aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer, but since he used a gun the “10, 20, Life” law may also apply. If so, Finklestein will get a 20 year sentence.

Cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson: Same Old Product, Bright New Packaging (Creationists trash Cosmos, freepers join in and hoot approval.)

If there was any doubt that the rebooted Cosmos series, which premiered last night, would be politically charged and have a materialistic ideological message, consider what viewers saw in its first sixty seconds. The opening featured President Obama giving a statement endorsing the series. That’s not necessarily bad, except for what happened next. Immediately following President Obama’s endorsement, the show replayed Carl Sagan’s famous materialistic credo from the original Cosmos series that “The cosmos is all there is, or ever was, or ever will be.” Does it violate the separation of church and state for the President of the United States to be portrayed seemingly endorsing Sagan’s materialistic viewpoint? Is this what President Obama meant when he said in his first inaugural address that we should “restore science to its rightful place.

But magically, she has started to recover and is back to eating on her own again.

Every indication is the medication I had been giving her for hyperthyroidism was nearly killing her. None of the pros wanted to believe that was the problem, but now that she’s completely off that stuff she’s doing better. It’s been an expensive lesson….She might still die of hyperthyroidism someday but for now she’s still in some semblence of health.

Having another blood test for her tomorrow. She won’t be fully recovered, however, until she starts demanding treats, digging up my recliner should I fail to be timely in delivering her goodies.

Police said that just after firing the first shot, Santos accidentally fired the gun again, hitting himself in the leg and shattering his left thigh bone.

Police said Santos did not know he had shot the young girl, but believed that the first bullet went into the floor of his garage.

Neither Santos nor the girl suffered a life-threatening injury, police said.

It’s awesome that we live in an era where shattering your thigh bone is “not life-threatening”, but on the other hand I’m not sure we should downplay, well, shattering your thigh bone.

Or shooting 12-year-old girls in the arm either, for that matter.

Oh well, chalk another one up to law-abiding gun owners everywhere.

One of mine had a minor problem having to do with one of those scent sacs located at the very rear of the overlord. After determining is wasn’t too serious, my biggest fear was the ads I would get after googling the situation.

When I called the vet, they said to hold his butt under running water for 5 minutes a day for five days. I laughed and said, ‘yeah, sure, OK. Hahahaha!’ The warm washcloth works fine.

I gave both kitties baths yesterday (not fair to do just one) but even that only involves water poured from a cup while they stand in the tub next to a dishpan of water (and being lathered up with baby shampoo and rinsed a lot). They’re 7 years old now, and have gotten somewhat used to being bathed. I had to start twice a week baths right when I brought them home because (the other) one had ringworm.

One of them purrs while I trim his nails. The other snuggles into my lap and doesn’t want to leave when I’m done.

If anyone is interested, it turns out they are now crowdsourcing for this missing plane just like we did for Steve Fossett.

“The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation, which watches out for nuclear weapons tests worldwide, looked at its data for the last few days to see if its infrasound - below the range of human hearing - recordings, normally used to seek out the muffled crump of underground tests, contained any signature of an aircraft explosion. But it found nothing.

And an ambitious attempt to crowdsource the search has also taken off. Satellite imaging firm Digital Globe has divided up high-resolution images of the region of interest so that web users can scan them for signs of the plane.

A similar crowdsourcing effort was organised by Amazon when pioneer aviator Steve Fossett disappeared in 2007.”

Fuckface weasel Scott Walker isn’t going to call a special session to address his dismal failure to attract jobs to this state with his failed right wing ideology. Oh no.

Gov. Scott Walker says he would call voter ID special session

Gov. Scott Walker says he would call lawmakers into a special session to modify Wisconsin’s voter photo identification requirements if courts don’t uphold the current measure, which has been blocked since shortly after he signed it into law in 2011.

Meanwhile, the state Senate was taking up more than a dozen election-related measures Tuesday, some of which drew criticism from Democrats as an attempt to suppress voting among traditionally Democratic groups. They include one bill that would end weekend voting prior to elections.

Laser focus on jobs indeed.

The “Catholic League” and Bill Donohue do not “represent” Catholics in any way. He and his briefcase and his 501(c)4, in all likelihood, are a small minority of Catholics. Catholics use birth control in the same numbers as those of any other religion, hate the sex abuse history of the Church, don’t mind gays marrying, and love Pope Frank. And they hate the idea that their church presided over the Inquistion, allied with some nasty monarchs.

“The three experienced journalists from public broadcaster NRK said they were stopped at an improvised checkpoint manned by 15 to 20 armed men wearing black masks and unmarked uniforms. The surrounding area was occupied by a further 100 to 150 troops, they said.

“The mood was extremely aggressive,” one of the journalists, Jan Espen Kruse, told NRK’s website.

“They stood there with their masks and loaded weapons and accused us of being spies.”

“The guards confiscated three PCs, all the material the team had filmed, memory sticks, a small camera, as well as bulletproof vests and helmets they had with them for their personal safety, he added.” More

Afghanistan.

Protesters, claiming foreign forces had burned a copy of Islam’s holiest book during a raid in Maidan Wardak province last week, blocked traffic in Kabul for more than an hour. A spokeswoman for U.S. and NATO-led forces in Afghanistan said none of their troops were involved in the incident and blamed the Taliban for spreading a false rumor that a copy of the Koran had been burned.

Thick plumes of smoke rose above the crowd as protesters set fire to a large effigy of what they said was U.S. President Barack Obama. “Death to America. Down with Israel,” chanted one man at the rally, which was organized mainly by university students. Others threw stones and clashed with police but no casualties were reported.

“No to democracy. We want just Islam,” said one banner carried by protesters, many of whom shook their fists in the air. Captain Elizabeth Mathias, a media officer for U.S. and NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, said the Taliban were trying to undermine foreign troops by spreading the rumor. “We did not burn a Koran … It is unfortunate that the protesters believe a Taliban rumor,” Mathias said, adding an investigation had been carried out.

From the link:

Gehlbach and Baldridge observed some of the screech owls in their study carrying live Texas Blindsnakes (Rena [formerly Leptotyphlops] dulcis) to their nests in experimental nest boxes like those used by wood ducks and bluebirds (pictured at right). When they checked the nests the next day, they found, to their surprise, between one and fifteen live blindsnakes living among the owl chicks in fourteen different nests! In some cases, the snakes lived with the baby owls for at least a week! Many of the blindsnakes bore scars from adult owl beaks, but few had been killed.

Read the rest for more fascinating details. And a video. And a photo of baby birds ‘almost as cute as baby snakes’.

Hard to believe that many voters didn’t understand the word “lobbyist”.

tampabay.com

These 2 voters knew, though.

“I would never vote for a lobbyist for office,” said Zlatko Horvatich, 72, referring to Jolly’s former profession that Sink and her allies repeatedly invoked.

“Marilyn Fields, a 71-year-old Democrat who voted for Sink, said she got 10 phone calls Monday about the candidates. “I think they are aiming for the seniors,” she said about the negative ads. “They’re wrong. The info is misleading. If you don’t investigate it yourself, you won’t know.”

re: #131 thedopefishlives

Charles, LGF is asking me to download something every time I go to the front page. Is this supposed to happen?

By the way, are you using any kind of extensions or add-ons that might affect these videos - like a Flash blocker or anything like that? Because when I test Chrome in Win 7 here, there’s no autoplaying or download prompt - it seems to work OK. But this is with a plain vanilla Chrome install, nothing added.

183 Charles Johnson  Tue, Mar 11, 2014 5:27:12pm

Comedy Central has apparently closed the little loophole I was using to get their direct MP4 video feeds, unfortunately. That’s how I used to get around these problems with their iframe embed code.

Found it. Not that exact shot, but enough to prove it’s B.S. It was an Anti-U.S. protest at Kabul University in October 2009 during which (our supposedly Muslim) President was burned in effigy (see the CBS News link below):

Also, all recognizably the same guys:

A bomb killed an American service member in southern Afghanistan, the U.S. military said Sunday, as Afghan police fired shots in the air to disperse up to 1,000 students protesting a rumor that U.S. troops burned a copy of the Muslim holy book, the Quran. […]

During their protest Sunday, Afghan students burned an effigy of President Barack Obama and marched from Kabul University to the parliament building, where riot police turned them back with shots in the air. There were no reports of casualties. […]

The phone thing has already been debunked so I suppose the rest of it’s probably bullshit too.

OFFS, why would anyone even bother getting info about this from the freaking DKos rec list instead of directly from a professional news source? Even the pros are utterly confused because they keep getting conflicting stories—the Malaysian Air Force chief says one thing, other government authorities say something else, and then the head of Malaysia Airlines offers a third account. Meanwhile, grief-stricken relatives in China think everyone’s lying to them to cover something up and are starting to freak out. It’s a major clusterfuck.

Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: Alien Abduction Theory buzzing on Social Media

There are speculations that the flight might have crash-landed at certain untraceable island and passengers may be still alive, a situation similar to ABC’s super-hit series Lost.

The Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 took off from Kuala Lumpur on Friday and was supposed to reach Beijing by Saturday morning. However, it went missing over the South China Sea within hours.

Meanwhile, a bizarre theory on the outer space and mid-air alien abduct angle to the lost Boing 777 too has surfaced online.

Top theory de jour at Freeperland is that the plane was hijacked (either by the pilots (since they are Muslim you know), or parties unknown. They flew it at a low altitude to avoid radar and landed it on some airfield somewhere. It’s going to be repainted, an Iranian nuke is going to be loaded on it, and then it’s going to be flown into American airspace and detonated.

They are busy discussing nuances and variations of this theme, it would be amusing if it weren’t so damn scary.

As for me, I’m really at a loss for a theory. There have been so many things coming out, debunked, misinterpreted, and just wrong that I’m keeping a very open mind. I’m almost leaning toward some kind of freak “Payne Stewart” type incident, but at this point almost nothing would surprise me.

Featured Pages that were created more recently will show up in the Featured list before Pages that are auto-promoted by exceeding 10 up-dings, because the creation time is the primary sorting key for that section.

I think people forget that there’s still a “Top-rated Pages” feature that gives you a lot more flexibility in viewing and sorting Pages. You can sort by top-rated, most recent, most views, most comments, and by individual categories.

FUNDAMENTALISM OR WOMEN’S RIGHTS?

Fundamentalism is a modern political movement that uses religion to gain or consolidate power. It is found in all major religions throughout the world, sometimes holding state power, sometimes in opposition to it — and sometimes working within the confines of a secular state to control minority communities. Fundamentalism is not the same as religious observance, which we see as a matter of individual choice.

Fundamentalists set out to perpetuate women’s role as upholders of the supposedly unchanging morals and traditions of the whole community.

Women who refuse this role may risk being demonised, outcast from their community, subjected to physical violence or even killed.

The control of women’s minds and bodies is at the heart of the fundamentalist agenda.

When she was first diagnosed the doctors said one of the other options was irradiation.

My other female is also hyperthyroid and is getting the pills but she seems to be handling them just fine.

Belated follow-up since I just saw this.

One of my Siamese was diagnosed as hyperthyroid, and then had a severe, and hospitalizing, reaction to the standard medicine for that. Triggered something that was diagnosed as pancreatitis. He recovered once off the medicine. And I did opt for radiation treatment for him (thus comments a ways back about ‘radioactive cat’.) He lived for another 5-6 years after treatment and put a pound of weight back on in the three weeks following the radiation treatment.

The other cat I had that was diagnosed as hyperthyroid had no issues with the medication - we just had her tested every six months and adjusted the dosage if necessary.
