This Time, You Have to Read Down to Paragraph 29 to Find Out Glenn Greenwald Is Exaggerating Again

Millions, or none? “It is unclear…”
Weird • Views: 20,195

Here we go again. The latest story from Glenn Greenwald at The Intercept is based on another stolen 5-year old PowerPoint deck, and describes an NSA system designed to be able to scale to a large size — so of course, Greenwald’s headline screams: How the NSA Plans to Infect ‘Millions’ of Computers With Malware - the Intercept.

Please note that designing a system with scalability is not the same thing as “planning to infect millions of computers.”

And once again, if you read all the way down to paragraph 29, buried under reams of fear-mongering hype, you find:

It is unclear how many of the implants are being deployed on an annual basis or which variants of them are currently active in computer systems across the world.

Yes, that’s right — Greenwald simply doesn’t know how many of these “implants” were deployed, or are being deployed, or if they’re actually being deployed at all. But that doesn’t stop him from inserting inflated numbers — also known as “wild guesses.”

You’ll also find that this system has nothing to do with spying on Americans, and is targeted exclusively at foreign terrorists and criminals.

If you want more details, follow the link. I for one am getting very weary of these exaggerated hyperbolic claims based on out-of-context PowerPoint slides, conflating the ability to do something with actually doing it.

But just in case you want another clear indicator of the pure animus toward the US that drives Glenn Greenwald, in two consecutive tweets:

What kind of person thinks a “constitutional crisis” is “too good to be true?”

This is strikingly similar to the games creationists play: “This organism is complex or has a complex part. I don’t see any other reason how it could be that way other than God, so God must be real.”

Greenwald: “This is a PowerPoint slide from the NSA. I don’t see any other reason why they would make this slide other than deploying it against everyone, so they deploy it against everyone.”

Also is it just me or is there paragraph-inflation going on in these articles? Just a few short months ago the mitigating factors were only like 21 paragraphs in…

I was of the opinion in 1992 that the USSR should have been forcibly re-constituted and compelled to resolve a lot of issues before finally being allowed to split into independent states.

It was not the worst day of his life, it was the day that opened a major opportunity for an ambitious young man like him.

they knew that they had to let the USSR fall apart and let chaos reign for several decades before they would be welcomed for trying to put it back together again in a new form.

Since encountering the ‘mind’ of ‘Fjordman’ as exhibited here and elsewhere in monumentally long essays, I am skeptical of excessively verbose coverage of issues that don’t require it. You can’t hide your bullshit in paragraph 29 if your essay is only 20 paragraphs long. Intercept adds graphics and videos to further obfuscate the lack of clear, concise communication.

So I scrolled down to the last paragraph.

“Hacking routers has been good business for us and our 5-eyes partners for some time,” notes one NSA analyst in a top-secret document dated December 2012. “But it is becoming more apparent that other nation states are honing their skillz [sic] and joining the scene.”

I can’t believe they used ‘[sic]’ after ‘skillz’ in a casually worded document. But the more bothersome part is the lack of transparency in this linked fragment. For all we know, it’s something Snowden wrote himself, and then stole.

Understanding The History And Purpose Of Fox News

FOX News is indisputably the most popular cable news channel. And yet in 13 years, Fox has never broken a story. That’s okay, because it is not in the news business. It is in the news-shaping business. Its programming is an admixture of right-wing propaganda and fear-porn for feeble-minded paranoiacs, served up by spokesmodels who have no clue what they are reading.

Unless you’re married to a hoarder who buys books and stacks them everywhere even though there are no more shelves to hold them!

That’s an easy fix…. Take 2 piles of books about 1 foot high, position them 5 foot apart. Put a shelf on top of the piles, add more books to create another shelf, repeat as needed..

That way the books become the storage system. I bet you could even make shelves of shelves (but that’s too meta / escher for me)

Well, most people who use gas know that when you smell it, LEAVE THE BUILDING.
Do not call while still in the building.
Do not flip any electrical/light fixtures.
Just get outside ASAP and do not go back in until the gas company says it’s safe.

I forgot they don’t make phone books any more.

NM: Can you summarize the findings so far?

TW: The take-home from that study is that most women are having an abortion because they say they can’t afford to have a child. And it turns out that they’re right: Two years later, women who had a baby they weren’t expecting to have, compared to the women who had the abortion they wanted, are three times more likely to be living in poverty. They knew they couldn’t afford a kid and it turns out they were correct.

One of the more troubling findings is the way that controversy has become a reason to discount science. There’s a great book called “Merchants of Doubt” [Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway, Bloomsbury, 2011]. It’s about the production of scientific controversy as a way to discount legitimate scientific research and clear-cut consensus about tobacco or climate change, but it also applies to abortion. As the book points out, you don’t need to disprove science anymore. All you need to do is suggest that the science is actually in doubt. Courts will then look at and say, “It’s a controversy, so deference should go to the Legislature,” or “It’s a controversy, so we’ll do whatever we want.”

A contributing problem is that, in the legal context, medical experts and scientists who do abortion or study abortion have been seen as suspect. Lisa Harris, at the University of Michigan, has written some great stuff on what she calls “The Legitimacy Paradox.” It goes like this: By virtue of doing an abortion, you’re not a real doctor. Therefore, real doctors don’t do abortions. Therefore, you have the right to regulate them because they’re not real doctors.

You shouldn’t let mere pain get in the way of appreciating its beauty, however.

So it is doubly their fault for procreating while impoverished. If they just kept their legs together until they got a job, then they could get pregnant…and lose their job for lack of maternity leave.

I can see that Putin wanting to seemingly put the USSR back together once again will get a rise out of many Americans as a move by a decisive man of strength.

Just think…it is the dream of many a conservative to restore America to another time too. Take your pick…the 1950s just after the war when America kicked ass and everyone was scared of us. Or maybe the 1850s Antebellum Era of the South…states rights and all that.

And regarding Greenwald-styled journo-like-ism, I sometimes wonder how many people ever read past the first couple of paragraphs. There are great numbers of people these days (and probably few lizards) that can read more than a couple paragraphs. Many people like a two paragraph email, any more and they lose the plot. Tweets are less than 140 characters and both email, tweets and many comments/posts on the ‘net rely on typing phrases into acronym-like spelling like LOL and GFY. Writing in a classic sense is almost useless as it appears to be unwanted.

And that is used as a new media tool. Fox News. CNN. Greenwald. This is the new style of writing. Titillate in the first sentence, bore them by the third paragraph and hide the facts at the end where they never see it.

Dangerous stuff. 1984…Animal Farm…Brave New World…all those authors would be amazed by how correct they were.

Some real strong wind gusts coming through central Ohio now too. Must be the cold front blowing in. Snow probably out in front of it an hour or so away too. It seems anymore all fronts are on very strong winds. Remember when they used to call March ‘kite month’ since there were always winds to get a kite aloft? Now you fly your kite in July, if you took it out anytime from November to June its going to get ripped up or just take off never to be seen again.

By the way…do kids ever fly kites anymore??? What a great ol’ inexpensive pastime that used to be. Learned a lot about winds, updrafts and well…basic sciences doing it.
