Argentine Singer Sofia Rei in a Fantastic NPR Concert

A drum from the Argentine Pampas fuels the music of Sofia Rei in this video: The way Franco Pinna has it incorporated into a traditional drum set serves as a musical metaphor for the music Rei performs alongside Pinna and guitarist/bassist JC Maillard.

Rei carries the accent and spirit of her native Argentina in her jazz-infused vocals. She’s successfully carved out a spot for herself within a small and exclusive group of vocalists from Latin America who, after spending their formative years in their own countries, came to the U.S. to blend folklore, jazz and classic influences into singing that feels both familiar and new. For about 20 minutes one sunny afternoon, the NPR Music offices were converted into a small Latin American folk club, where Rei treated us to stellar musicianship and genre-bending music. Just when you think it can’t get any worse… Bristol Palin is in the news, for criticizing Texas gubenatorial candidate Wendy Davis. Notice Davis, on TV, says that everything Ms. Palin said about her is untrue.

Hopefully the weekend will improve from here.

One Palin is bad enough. Two Palins is an outbreak.

Suggest quarantine of both until eradication is complete.

OT, but Charles, is there any way to have the site optimized better for mobile? I have been using it over the last week on the iPhone 4S (3G) and it takes forever to load the front page. I know there was some discussion about an app recently in comments. Just noting the slow load times in Safari. Maybe it’s just me and my phone.

Free Republic has gone full frontal conspira-loon:
False flag ops in Ukraine and Syria

One question which nobody is asking is this: To what extent is the sniping episode and the presumed legitimacy of blaming it on Yanukovich and/or Russians serving as a pretext for American attempts at involvement at this point? SHOULD the US government be going forward with ANYTHING here before the question is resolved?

The real question that needs to be asked is this: To what extent is the OFFICIAL, GOVERNMENT-OWNED Kremlin propaganda outlet Russia Today using supposed “patriots” for false flag propaganda operations against their own country? The luno-liar continues:

As I see it, the US has gone to the well a couple of too many times with false-flag ops over the past couple of decades beginning with SlicK Clinton and Izetbegovic and their 5000 dead bodies, up to the most recent thing of trying to blame the use of sarin gas on Assad in Syria and, past some point, the world has seen this little show often enough that they get wise to it. They’re probably starting to view us as a bunch of dangerous lunatics.

Sure, we somehow gassed thousands of people in Syria, covered up the operation so completely that not a shred of evidence came out and even the Russians didn’t call us on it, and all this was done as a pretext for intervention that has not in fact occurred.

These people are dangerously insane and there are millions of them. Ignoring them is not the answer.

From the makers of ‘17, Preggers & Palin’ comes Sarah Palin’s ‘More Stuff About Me’ TV

Sarah Palin seems to believe that America is absolutely fascinated with Alaska’s wide-open barren nothingness, moose-based diet, and inviting black fly and mosquito population. No mention, of course, of the annual 22.1 suicides per 100,000 residents giving Alaska has the highest suicide rate of all fifty states.

But, shut up - look! There goes a moose!

The calculated hypocrisy of the conspiracy spouting right-wing is breathtaking. Soros and various European leaders endorse and support the Ukrainian Maidan, and this somehow constitutes a conspiracy of intervention. One idiot at Free Republic called it a “coup d’etat by terrorists.”
At the same time, the hundreds of millions spent by the Kremlin to influence American opinion through Russia Today and Cthulhu-knows-who-else are merely journalism and “asking questions.”

Care to wager that allowing Comcast to utterly dominate the market won’t result in more competitive internet speeds in this country?

Reminder: if you are not expressing your dissatisfaction with the idea of allowing Comcast to become even more powerful than it already is to elected officials, you are giving your tacit approval. Comcast just doubled their speeds. Performance went from 25 to 50 Mbps, Blast went from 50 to 105 Mbps. Thats pretty damn fast.

Sartorial recommendations for the white man march:

If you are a man, put on a pair of light khakis and a nice dress shirt. It should almost look like you are a groomsman at a wedding. Or maybe like an avenging Aryan angel. Women, you know how to look great in white.

You could also wear sunglasses. Ancient warriors knew that a mask covering the eyes offers protection, but also provides the wearer with extra confidence. Sunglasses can intimidate others who cannot see your eyes, while making you seem cool and collected.

Putin, Putin, Putin. What is he up to? Is it wrong to think he is enjoying all this ‘limelight’ he is drawing upon himself? And, is he using it all as a way to pull off a modern invasion while the rest of the world reacts as I am with the ‘what is he up to.’

It’s like he knows everyone is watching and with all the coverage, he can take Ukraine as everyone watches. The ultimate in narcissistic power-hungry leadership. But no slight of hand. Just doing it, almost right in everyone’s face.

“Hey world-wide web…this is Vladimir Putin. Watch me as I pull this one off. And you thought it was all about Olympics. So, tune in, you’ll really, really want to make sure you see this.”

They upped it all over. I don’t know about you but 105 Mbps is plenty fast for me. I’ve been on 50 since I finally got high speed when I moved down here. Of course this coming from someone who’s been living on dial up until September so 50 is lightening speed for me.

A technician for Comcast once told me, after the company announced a big speed improvement as if it was a fantastic new achievement, that all they did in the central hub was flip a couple of switches. It was already capable of much faster throughput.

The issue with most of the high-speed internet providers wasn’t in the speed that the hardware in the so-called ‘last mile’ provided, but in the overall bandwidth that could be supported on the next 2-3 upstream legs.

A couple of years ago, our area had swapped from single-frequency DOCSIS-2 to 6-band DOCSIS-3 cable modems, which meant we went from around 10mb/sec to equipment handling 30-50mb/sec. Problem is, the provider overbuilt in the area, so all that additional bandwidth hit a MAJOR bottleneck between the central office and the local hub, because at the same time they were also rolling out the changeover to an all-digital signal as well as adding VOIP telephone capability - without doing the required major upgrades to the supporting infrastructure. Because of all of this, the area I am in had cable and internet service that had periods (some lasting days to weeks) of complete non-usability.

Her two oldest kids dropped out of high school, #3 is on track to do the same. Her oldest girl had an unplanned pregnancy at 17 with a guy she can’t stand to be in the same room as, her oldest boy’s kid was born 5 months after the wedding. Got a new plant today.

Image: 55rjWha.jpg

Sarracenia rosea, aka “Burk’s Southern Pitcher Plant”. It’s a close relative to Sarracenia purpurpea, the Purtple Pitcherplant. I was expecting a small plant that I could fit in a 5.5” pot, not a monster that (when considering roots and all) is the size of my head.

I had to pot it in my spare 11” bog pot:
Image: XUNiwC0.jpg

And rather than put it in the grow rack (which is so full it’s not even funny) it’s going outside. Probably need to get a new, deeper, pot for it as well.

Remember all of the rightwing outrage that happened with the mixed-race couple in the Cheerios commercial recently?
They’re about to get REALLY mad because the new group of Honey Maid commercials has decided to go even further with the message.

Diversity reaches new levels in Honey Maid ads

In one 30-second Honey Maid ad, viewers will see everything from a same-sex couple bottle-feeding their son to an interracial couple and their three kids holding hands. The ad also features a Hispanic mother and an African-American father with their three mixed-race children. And there’s even a father covered in body tattoos. This is not some shockvertisement for Benetton. It’s an ad for one of America’s oldest and most familiar brands. The people in it are not actors, but real families. The message of the ad: These are wholesome families enjoying wholesome snacks.

A technician for Comcast once told me, after the company announced a big speed improvement as if it was a fantastic new achievement, that all they did in the central hub was flip a couple of switches. It was already capable of much faster throughput.

A comcast agent tried to upsell me on their new faster service. (I have FIOS(tm) One of my first questions was “Does this mean Comcast won’t be throttling Netflix and Youtube anymore?”

He didn’t like that.

I also talked to him about the new alternative uses of the wifi routers in homes of Comcast customers, such as providing on-the-go wifi for [exclusively] other Comcast customers. The company has said there would be an extra BSSID signal enabled on each home router for such use, but unavailable to the home user.

I see some problems with that. It’s not one extra BSSID, it’s THREE more. For two of my neighbors who recently got Comcast, with SMC routers, there are FOUR BSSIDs being broadcast, all of them on channel1.

Another problem I see for my nearer neighbor: Each of those four BSSIDs advertises speeds of up to 450k bits/sec, so they are effectively using two-thirds of the available spectrum in the 2400MHz ISM band —from ch1 (and below) thru ch7.

450 kb/sec is over 8x the capacity of the very common 802.11g wifi operating at 54kb/sec. That’s faster than most people’s internet connection, so 450 is kinda piggish, even for one BSSID. But Comcast is using FOUR per router now, according to my personal observations using Inssider (forPCs) and WiFi Analyzer (for PCs/Android).

Same, same.

Hell, even if Google does decide to expand Fiber to us here in Nashville, it’s likely going to take a while for the buildout to reach my neighborhood, because I figure they’ll start with downtown and the more affluent areas first; a big plus is that it’ll put pressure on Comcast and AT&T to get more competitive on pricing and plans and that’s a good thing.

Thanks to Russia’s recent actions, this is an amazing time in history. I would expect Greenwald, and anyone interested in the news, to have a lot to say about Russia right now. Beyond the current Ukraine crisis, this article looks at the silence of both GG and Snowden in regard to Russia’s vicious persecution of gays.
