Russian State TV: Russia Could Turn US to ‘Radioactive Ash’

Putin’s mouthpiece threatens nuclear war
World • Views: 17,596

This is the same guy who advocates genocide for gay people — and he’s not kidding one bit: State TV Says Russia Could Turn US to ‘Radioactive Ash’.

Moscow (AFP) - A leading anchor on Russian state television on Sunday described Russia as the only country capable of turning the United States into “radioactive ash”, in an incendiary comment at the height of tensions over the Crimea referendum.

“Russia is the only country in the world realistically capable of turning the United States into radioactive ash,” anchor Dmitry Kiselyov said on his weekly news show on state-controlled Rossiya 1 television.

Kiselyov made the comment to support his argument that the United States and President Barack Obama were living in fear of Russia led by President Vladimir Putin amid the Ukraine crisis.

And as this is happening, Glenn Greenwald is blatantly shilling for Russia’s sham referendum in Crimea with a sleazy and wholly disingenuous comparison — while at the same time, mocking and insulting anyone who points out he’s shilling for Russia.

This is what passes for wit among the dudebros.

It’s true that Russia could turn the US into a radioactive wasteland, its been true for decades. But we can do the same damn thing to Russia, and they do remember that.

I don’t like this though, not at all. MAD is not a fun concept and I’d really rather not engage in nuclear belligerence with Russia. Even Ronald Reagan didn’t like that (Sorry wingnuts, but he signed the IRBM Treaty because he wanted that particular class of nukes gone).

Um…pardon what I fear may be a stupid question, but am I correct in assuming that “dudebro” refers to Greenwald/Snowden, etc? If so, why are they called that?

My understanding is that a “dudebro” is basically a sexist, homophobic douchebag, at least that’s what the kids seem to be saying.

Is there a likely-to-succeed ABM test using new parameters we can order to be done soon? Because right now I’m think a successful ABM test might help remind Russia we aren’t a pushover. Also, its a defensive system so President Obama can honestly say we’re not being belligerent.

Investors pulled $33 billion out of [Russia] in January and February, and that figure could hit $55 billion by the end of March, according to Russian investment bank Renaissance Capital.

Russia faces a hefty bill for supporting Crimea. The region currently depends on Ukraine for roughly 70% of its budget, 90% of its water, and most of its energy and food supplies.

Boom.

“…The Kremlin’s fundamental mistake is to have ignored its economic weakness and dependence on Europe. On Monday, March 3, the Russian RTS index plummeted 12 percent, while Gazprom fell by 17 percent, as it will lose its valuable Ukrainian market and perhaps also transit to Europe.

The ruble fell by 2.5 percent in early trading, and the central bank was forced to raise its policy rate from 5.5 percent to 7.0 percent to impede the run on the ruble. The Russian economy was set to stagnate, but now it is likely to contract.

With its great economic power, Europe can have a great impact just by applying existing rules more rigorously. By normal standards, many big Russian state companies, notably Gazprom, would be considered organized crime syndicates, and according to current legal standards, European financial institutions should not be allowed to deal with them. To a large extent, the United States has already done so.”

It’s astonishing that anyone could have anything good to say about Putin’s Russia at this point, but both the Dudebros (Greenwald, Snowden) and the right-wing nut jobs are up to the task.

Of course, we should all be comforted to know that the adult in the room, President Obama, doesn’t want to escalate this Crimea crisis; it’s already bad enough. BUT, unfortunately, it seems to me that NATO may have no choice, right now, but to offer some increased assurances to various Eastern European countries that are “on the front lines”.

I’m thinking of Poland in particular, since I have some very small knowledge about that country. But I’m sure there are many other countries in Eastern Europe, who were formerly in the Warsaw Pact, who are looking for assurances that Putin won’t go after them.

One bad case would be if such an “assurance” is, for example, moving missiles into that country. This would be an “escalation”, even though it’s defensive.

My point is that we should all want to avoid escalation if possible, but it may be difficult to avoid. I’m very glad that Obama is President now, considering some of the possible alternatives!

Obama: America stands ready ‘to impose further sanctions’ on Russia

Speaking in the White House on March 17, U.S. President Barack Obama again called on Russia to withdraw combat troops from Ukraine’s Crimea and to pursue a diplomatic solution with Ukraine’s central government in Kyiv.

Dugin got some attention in the NYT yesterday.

[…]

Another person who has been swept into the mainstream is one of Mr. Prokhanov’s former protégés, Aleksandr G. Dugin, who, in the late 1990s, called for “the blinding dawn of a new Russian Revolution, fascism — borderless as our lands, and red as our blood.”

Virulently anti-American, Mr. Dugin has urged a “conservative revolution” that combines left-wing economics and right-wing cultural traditionalism. In a 1997 book, he introduced the idea of building a Eurasian empire “constructed on the fundamental principle of the common enemy,” which he identified as Atlanticism, liberal values, and geopolitical control by the United States.

Building a Eurasian economic bloc, including Ukraine, became a central goal for Mr. Putin upon his return to the presidency. His point man on the project was the economist Sergei Glazyev, an associate of Mr. Prokhanov’s and Mr. Dugin’s.

In an interview, Mr. Dugin was evasive when asked about his personal contact with Mr. Putin, saying only that he had been “in close contact with the Kremlin, and with those in the Kremlin who make decisions,” for the last 15 years. But he said the president, whom he described as a Henry Kissinger-style “pragmatist,” had embraced a version of his ideology because it served his interests domestically.

“It is popular, it is populist, it helps to explain all the processes which are going on in the country, and gradually — just by the logic of things, pragmatically, he becomes closer and closer to this ideology, just by the logic of events,” he said. He also offered a more human reason: that Mr. Putin had been stung by Western leaders’ apparent preference for his predecessor, Dmitri A. Medvedev, and then by the antigovernment protests that he believed were backed by the West.

Though a number of high-ranking officials around Mr. Putin have argued strenuously against this ideological shift, Mr. Dugin said that their influence had been waning steadily, and that the Crimean crisis left them no option but to “be quiet, or gather up their suitcases and leave Russia.”

“Anti-Americanism has become the main ideology, the main worldview among Russians,” he said. “Now, after Crimea, we have passed the point of no return. There will not be another Medvedev. There will never be another ‘reset,’ ever.”

Another bit of history to mark the day:

“Wear green on St. Patrick’s Day or get pinched.” That pretty much sums up the Irish-American “curriculum” that I learned when I was in school. Yes, I recall a nod to the so-called Potato Famine, but it was mentioned only in passing.
Sadly, today’s high school textbooks continue to largely ignore the famine, despite the fact that it was responsible for unimaginable suffering and the deaths of more than a million Irish peasants, and that it triggered the greatest wave of Irish immigration in U.S. history. Nor do textbooks make any attempt to help students link famines past and present.

Yeah…but it’s a good read. Ricks apparently is somewhat recognized for being an actual journalist, and GG liked having his support…but now…

All of this is a far cry from where Ricks stood in January, when he wrote that he was beginning to “edge toward Snowden.” Those days, apparently, are over.

In a post published Monday on his blog, Ricks once again seemed to insinuate that Greenwald and Snowden are in cahoots with the Russians.

“Bottom line: I am no longer going soft on Greenwald and Snowden,” he wrote. “In fact, rather the opposite, I am beginning to believe the worst about them. If they acting on moral beliefs, now would be the time for both of them to speak out against Putin. It could have a great impact, I think.”

Greenwald approves of Putin, or he is afraid for Snowden’s life.

So he deflects.

I don’t believe Greenwald gives a shit about Snowden’s life.

It was out and out genocide brought on by profit. But it always pains me to see the descendants of these oppressed people, victims of a horrible class system, mouthing off about about others who have been oppressed not only because of class, but because of the color of their skin.

I know, it always gets me when I see Irish Americans defend oppression.

You know what’s crazy? A person can criticize BOTH Russia and the US. Criticizing Putin doesn’t mean that one is condoning anything the US has done (though I don’t agree with Greenwald that the US is “worse,” or even near as bad). Only a child (i.e., Greenwald) would think otherwise.

85 Internet Tough Guy  Mon, Mar 17, 2014 10:57:49am

I fear for Glenn. After January 2017, the focus of all his hate will be out of office. If a white guy Republican wins the presidency, he may have nothing to live for. Pierre may have to put him on suicide watch.

To me, it seems he is only protecting his own ego. He keeps doubling and tripling down on the “no one in the US can criticize Russia” rhetoric, so for him to criticize even the most outrageous Russian transgressions would mean that he was backing down on something he said. He can never, ever admit that he might have been wrong.

This is how my brother behaved when he was 11 years old, mind you.

Absolutely. I grew up near a large Irish American family and the father never missed a day to bitch about the “Damn Mexicans.” Had to remind his sons who often echoed the old man that’s exactly what was sad about the Irish. Plus it’s annoying to hear them all referred to as Mexicans. My best friend back then was Peruvian as is my niece and SiL, and there’s tons of Salvadorians here too.

Thing is though, this always happen. One generation emigrates. Gets shit because their language and or accent is funny and their religion bothers people. Their children assimilate. And then their grandchildren bitch. My brother was making the point to my Eastern European grandmother that many of these Hispanic immigrants are older and as we know a new language is tougher to learn at a later age. I honestly don’t mind hearing Spanish. The only thing that upsets me is that it reminds me that I should have studied it harder in school rather than treating it like a prerequisite for graduation. SiL’s family does love it though when I show my limited knowledge though.

More about diversity at 538.

There was a column in the Guardian by Emily Bell yesterday citing that so far, there are six women on your 19-person editorial staff, and calling this new wave “a repackaging of the status quo with a very nice clubhouse attached.” Do you think about problems of representation in the team you’ve built?

About 85 percent of our applications come in from men. That worries us. At the same time, we’re hiring the best candidate for the position. But that’s one of the reasons why we take a long time and put a lot of effort into our hiring process, to make sure that we’re looking widely for the best possible candidates.

I’ll be honest — that piece, the grander point I don’t have any opinion about. I thought the notion about FiveThirtyEight … it upset me. We think a lot about the hiring process. The phrase “clubhouse chemistry” is an allusion to baseball, but the idea that we’re bro-y people just couldn’t be more off. We’re a bunch of weird nerds. We’re outsiders, basically. And so we have people who are gay, people of different backgrounds. I don’t know. I found the piece reaaaally, really frustrating. And that’s as much as I’ll say.

Nate doesn’t like to talk about it.

The Baltic states are exceedingly nervous; they all have large ethnic Russian minorities, and a Latvian of my acquaintance refers to them quite openly as “fifth columnists”.

It’s quite a surprise, but we apparently have a re-awakening of the Cold War. Of course, this is only an echo of the Cold War of 1945 - 1991. But given the obvious concerns of the Baltic states, and I assume Poland and maybe other Eastern European countries (Georgia comes to mind), it looks like this is more of a crisis than I’d realized.

Dang. Just tried to log in here after so long, and here I was all excited because I actually had something relevant to share. Feh.

Anyway - here it is: the struggling tech review site PandoDaily published a truly odious piece about Crimea today.

Gary Brecher’s recites a bunch of stuff he got from poring over books of how f’d up things have been in Ukraine in the 20th century, all in service of basically painting all Americans objecting to the Crimean takeover as blind tools of De Eebil Military Industrial Complex Overlords, and concludes with this little zinger.

So if you had the opportunity to declare yourself a Russian, with the security of living on a highly-defensible diamond-shaped peninsula with only two narrow access points, you might well decide to sign up with Putin’s Russia rather than whoever has declared him- or herself Hetman in Kiev.

Ain’t that just yummy?
