Gotcha. I was thinking it looked more like Marines. My stepdad had dress greens in his photos from Vietnam. Dad had Air Force blue dress uniform in his. (showing my lack of military background)

Those are the new Class A dress blues. A very sharp looking uniform with a long honorable history from the Revolution & through the ACW to now. I’m proud of being a blue coat today.

If I were a betting man, I’d say that’s about as sure a bet as anyone could make.

And of course, this will be coming from a man (Limbaugh) who got a medical deferment during the Vietnam War because of a pilondial cyst on his ass.

Here is one of the MoH awardee’s story that the troops-loving RW is shitting all over:

Leonard Kravitz’s unit was overrun by enemy troops in Korea in 1951. He stayed at his machine gun position long enough to give his fellow soldiers cover to retreat. Many of them survived, though Kravitz, who was just 20, did not.

These assholes simply have no shame.

She’s flat-out lying. I’ve been a single mom and struggled to raise one child—there’s no way in hell you could work 40-hour weeks in the kinds of jobs she’s talking about and raise 3 kids without assistance from anyone—the child care expenses alone would eat up all your pay. Then add food, clothing, rent, utilities, transportation, medical, school supplies…

But hey, who wouldn’t prefer to see their kids malnourished, shoeless & dressed in rags over having to humble oneself by taking a “handout”, right?

Many conservatives aren’t rich and won’t be. Since people compare themselves to their neighbors, yes, that is exactly the problem. They want to be comparatively rich and that’s only going to happen if they win the lottery, or their neighbors become poorer.

Putin’s entire MO is using “Western” misdeeds and posturing as cover for his own actions. A president adopting neo-con positions, or just playing the part, wouldn’t change what he’s doing.

This entire idea that awe of the Big Strong President would cow Putin is not just silly, it’s accepting the bullshit, banana-republic dictator, premise that looking good beats having a well-thought out plan.

They think that if they suck up to the rich, then the rich will “like” them but, in fact, the rich look at them the exact same way that “EastCountyDave” looks at “burger monkeys”.

There are a couple of huge misconceptions at work. The first is that ‘The Poor’ are all unemployed. The second is that everyone who is working at a minimum wage job could get a good paying job if only they tried. The third is that the job prospects for a kid fresh out of High School or College is just the same as it was when WE got out of HS or College in the 1970s and 1980s. The fourth is that jobs aren’t created by demand, but rather as a result of ‘investment’ by rich people.

Holy shit.

First. Lieutenant Shwab:

From defilade, he rallied his decimated force for a third charge on the hostile strong-point, worked his way to within 50 yards of the Germans and ordered his men to “hit the dirt.” While automatic weapons fire blazed around him, he rushed forward alone, firing his carbine at the German foxholes, straight for the key enemy machine pistol nest which had sparkplugged German resistance and caused heavy casualties among his men. Spotlighted through the mist and rain by enemy flares, he reached the German emplacement. Ripping off the shelter-half cover of the hostile firing pit, he clouted the German gunner on the head with his carbine butt and dragged him back, through a hall of fire, to friendly lines.

His action so disorganized hostile infantry resistance that the enemy withdrew, abandoning his formidable defensive line. Schwab’s gallantry and determination to carry on related in breaking a powerful German position.

That’s just… avatistic.

Not yet. It’s a funky old machine - I actually found it out by the dumpster one morning about a year ago. I’d never seen one, so I took it upstairs, inspected it for any leaks by filling the tub section, then took off the lid (which is removable) and checked out the motor and it was all working fine, so I’ve been using it ever since. The washer that came with the apartment is some ancient Stalin-era beast that really didn’t function all that well, so I put that downstairs in the storage unit for my apartment.

I don’t care about his mission work, he could have served and then did that as many of the young LDS men that my grandfather served with in Korea did. Hated the idea of buying a new fridge before the new house is ready.

H2 (History Channel 2) if you have Xfinity on Demand has a really fascinating docu about slave catchers and slave resisting. Knew it before obviously as a student of history but watching this really gets at the absolute ignorance it takes one to compare something like ACA or if you’re Sarah Palin, debt to China to the horrors of slavery. And then there’s the claims that “Slavery wasn’t so bad,”

The difference between the left and the right is that we on the left genuinely believe we can do better as a nation and people, the right doesn’t think we can. And that’s why I’ll always be on the left.

re: #79 calochortus

I know someone who supported 2 kids, went to school, worked, paid the rent etc., in the Bay Area in the early 70’s. I’m not sure what her child care arrangements were. But it was possible to do that then. Now? Not hardly.

This idiot was claiming 3 kids, zero assistance, and unskilled low-paying jobs, working only one 40-hour/wk job at a time. The child care costs are the killer. Just out of curiosity I looked up the minimum wage in CA in the early ’70s—it was $1.65 starting in 1968, then went up to $2.00 in 1974. So let’s say this woman on Twitter lived in CA with her 3 kids in 1974. Her pay would have been $2.00/hr x 40 hrs = $80.00/wk, before taxes.

Now let’s say she could find a sitter who’d watch the kids for $0.25/hr per kid while she was working (unlikely, but I’m being generous). That would be a minimum of $10/wk x 3 kids = $30/wk for child care—more than 1/3 of her entire week’s pay. If I’d had a friend or family member providing child care for my son, it would’ve removed an enormous financial burden from my back

I agree about nowadays—I doubt I could’ve managed it today even with just the one child I had.

I don’t get it. What’s he trying to say?

Writing on townhall.com in December of 2008, Prager compares a man’s obligation to go to work, regardless of his “mood,” to a woman’s obligation to have sex with her husband.
“Why would a loving, wise woman allow mood to determine whether or not she will give her husband one of the most important expressions of love she can show him? What else in life, of such significance, do we allow to be governed by mood?” he writes.
“What if your husband woke up one day and announced that he was not in the mood to go to work?”

I guess he’s saying sex on demand is in the wifely job description.
And she shouldn’t be all “moody” about it…

An update on the Seattle news helicopter crash from earlier today:

katu.com

Witnesses said the helicopter crashed as it was taking off from the helipad on the roof of Fisher Plaza, across the street from the Space Needle, at about 7:40 a.m.

A National Transportation Safety Board official, Dennis Hogenson, said the chopper rotated in a counterclockwise direction, then plummeted to the pavement below, according to eyewitness reports.

“It looked like the helicopter was trying to take off, and it just was trying to stabilize and it looked odd … and it just took a nose dive right down there on the street,” said one eyewitness. “And the scary thing about it was the gas from the helicopter started leaking and it caught a car or two on fire - so it’s crazy.”

Another eyewitness, Brian Cruz, said he saw the chopper in trouble in the air near the helipad.

“It looked like it got hung up on some cables, and before you know it - boom! - it dropped to the street,” he said.

Very sad.

158 Dr Lizardo  Tue, Mar 18, 2014 4:09:32pm

So with all the conspiracy theories about MH370, here’s a different one to ponder (or maybe not):

Rash of finance-pro suicides baffles experts

The financial world has been rattled by a rash of apparent suicides, with some of the best and brightest among the finance workers who have taken their lives since the start of the year.

A majority of the eight suicides of 2014 have been very public demonstrations, which has suicide-prevention experts puzzled.Moutier also discounts the location of the act as being the driver behind the reason for the suicide.

“The suicide-research literature doesn’t help very much with the question of why the method of these suicides is so out in the open,” she added.

nypost.com

Now I confess to being as guilty as anyone of the human trait to look for patterns, even where none may actually exist; it has crossed my mind “OK….have these folks looked into their economic crystal ball and seen some huge shitstorm coming, concluded ‘Well…..we’re boned’” and then gone on to commit suicide, sometimes in rather public fashion?

It certainly seems out-of-the-ordinary, at least to me. Of course, people have varied reasons for choosing suicide and it could well be that many of these unfortunates chose to kill themselves for any number of reason wholly unrelated to their professional lives.

Needless to say, however, this rash of suicides is certainly being discussed on the intertubes, often in conspiratorial tones.

Snowden:

“What Boundless Informant tells us is more communications are being intercepted in America by Americans than in Russia by Russians.

Some how I doubt the Russians have been stupid enough to share classified state secrets with a defector, so he’s basing that on…?

Snowden also made this incorrect assertion:

“The NSA has violated their own rules thousands of times in a single year — in one event they intercepted all the calls in Washington DC by accident.”

Here’s the incident Snowden is referencing:

nytimes.com

In one case in 2008 that was not reported to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court or Congress, it said, the system collected metadata logs about a “large number” of calls dialed from Washington - something it was already doing through a different program - because of a programming error mixing up the district’s area code, 202, with the international dialing code of Egypt, 20.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:

Correction: August 16, 2013

An earlier version of this article inaccurately portrayed an incident in 2008 involving a mix-up of the area code of Washington, D.C., 202, and the international dialing code of Egypt, 20. While the Washington Post initially described this incident as involving the “interception” of calls placed from Washington, the Post later explained that it involved the collection of “metadata” logs about the calls. It is not the case that the N.S.A. recorded the contents of the calls.

washingtonpost.com

The NSA has different reporting requirements for each branch of government and each of its legal authorities. The “202” collection was deemed irrelevant to any of them. “The issue pertained to Metadata ONLY so there were no defects to report,” according to the author of the secret memo from March 2013.

Charles covered that story last August, here:

OT - Looking for opinions on machetes

Spring is coming and I need to clear some serious brush out back. Looking at buying a machete. Just wondering if anyone has a favorite brand or type? I am leaning towards getting a gerber since I’ve always carried gerber pocket knives and have never been disappointed with their quality. This doesn’t necessarily mean they make decent machetes though. Also any preferred style? regular old fashioned machete, kukri, parang? the weight distribution on the kukri looks like it would be great for chopping saplings.

About the only thing missing from his story that I experienced was something I thing most anybody who’s worked part-time for minimum wage has experienced: You are always on-call. Yep. And if the managers could swing it, they’d cross-train you on as many jobs outside your job description as they could get away with so that there was somebody always on-call. Enough baggers showed up but a cashier called in sick? We’re in luck, the cashier over there was trained to run a register. It’s soul-sucking work.

At the lowest point in my working career, after my boss and company owner died and we shut down, I ended up working at the worst company in the entire country: Tandy Radio Shack.

How bad was it? First there was the psych test with the district manager, where he continually asked questions about stealing money. Have you ever, do you now, does handling money make your hands sweaty, hundreds of questions like that.

Having somehow managed to pass that, my first day on my new minimum wage job I was introduced to the guy I was replacing, who was fired on the spot, in front of me.

Then it got worse, much, much worse. Still I never had it as bad as the store manager(s), all of whom were fired in front of the entire staff, and even the district manager who hired me, who was also fired in public.

I never had more incentive to find a better job, and after a year ( this was in Oregon, and times were bad), I did.

Every time I walk by a RS store, I feel sorry for the poor bastard working there for minimum wage for the biggest shithole company in the country.

Is there a known reason for Radio Shack to be especially hellish to work at (e.g., founded by a frustrated martinet?).

I worked at a computer center (yeah, they had those once upon a time) as a trainer, so I was spared most of the crap the poor bastards who worked the sales floor had to put up with. Still had to clean the toilets, though.

Radio Shack works their people like mules, pays them nothing, and spys on them constantly. We had an alarm system that monitored when the store was opened, and when it was closed. Open a minute late, you get a phone call. Close more than 15 minutes late and they assume you’re stealing and they schedule an inventory check.

If you’re the store manager, they ship you crap you didn’t order and can’t sell because, well, it’s total crap, but you get penalized for not selling it. As a manager, you work 80 hours a week (no overtime, you’re management), and can expect surprise inspections from corporate with no notice, and periodically the auditors come in, locking the doors so no one can leave while they check the inventory. You don’t get paid for that, either.

I know when I spent my time in hell there in the 1980s ,the CEO was a bible thumping, RW asshole in Fort Worth who liked to write “folksy” copy for the companies flyers. Pure smarmy crap that did nothing to move product.

What I don’t understand is how they’re still in business. Every single thing they touched went to crap.
