Meanwhile in Venezuela, Maduro Cracks Down on “Los Chuckys”

Meanwhile in Venezuela, the death toll in anti-Maduro protests has risen to 29, and security forces have cracked down on protesters in Caracas’s Plaza Altamira. And Nicolas Maduro has been calling the protesters “Los Chuckys.”

“I’m giving the Chuckys, the killers, just a few hours,” Maduro said, using the name of a murderous child-doll in a horror film to describe anti-government demonstrators who have made the normally genteel 1940s square a base of operations.

“If they don’t retreat, I’m going to liberate those spaces with the security forces,” Maduro added. “They have a few hours to go home … Chuckys, get ready, we’re coming for you.”

US irate with Israeli defense minister comments

bigstory.ap.org

“The State Department said Kerry called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (neh-ten-YAH’-hoo) on Wednesday to protest recent remarks by Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon (MOH’-shuh YAH’-uh-lohn). He had accused Obama administration of being weak on Iran and questioned its commitment to Israel’s security.

“State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki (SAH’-kee) said the remarks were “not constructive” and “inconsistent” with the close relationship between the U.S. and Israel. She declined to characterize Netanyahu’s response.

“In remarks quoted in Israeli reports on Tuesday, Yaalon criticized the U.S. for not leading a campaign against Iran. He has been quoted as saying Kerry is “obsessive” and “messianic” about Middle East peace.”

Guess who Yaalon posed with?

Air Canada suspends Venezuela flights on ‘civil unrest’

usatoday.com

“Due to on-going civil unrest in Venezuela, Air Canada can no longer ensure the safety of its operation and has suspended flights to Caracas until further notice,” the carrier says in a statement posted on its website.”

“Yet while Air Canada cited safety, many industry observers also suspect a growing financial dispute between airlines and the Venezuelan government is at least as much to blame.

“The Globe and Mail of Toronto writes that citing safety only “hints at what may be the more accurate explanation.” The newspaper notes Air Canada also says “onerous currency restrictions imposed on all airlines preventing them from recovering their funds from Venezuela” and are making it difficult to do business in Venezuela.” More

OT but my follow-up interview is done. I think it went okay.

The hiring manager I talked to went to great pains to let me know that it’s a contract job until the end of the year. My friend who gave me his contact info in the first place had told me that, so I let him know that I was okay with it because it’s a great first step towards my larger career goals. He asked what I would do in the last few months if I knew the contract was ending without being renewed, which definitely tells me that it most likely won’t be. I mentioned that I’d still do the work I was asked to do at my same high standards because there’s no reason not to, and that I’d make sure I had a safety net saved up while I looked for work.

He also went on about parts of the gig being very very tedious. It’s a research analyst job, so I kinda knew that going in. Told him I had experience with that. My graduate internship had a lot of very tedious work that went on for a long time, but in the end, all that work paid off in the form of an editorial calendar that mapped things out for six months. I described all the work I did each day and how even though it hadn’t made sense to me at first, when I saw how it all came together I was very gratified. Maybe that will make me look good.

Now I just have to wait, which is the hardest part of all.

EU lacks the teeth to halt Russia, senior figures warn

The European Union (EU) is powerless to effect any change in Russia’s behaviour toward Crimea because its sanctions against Moscow are weak and could even backfire by damaging the interests of European companies, argues a former top NATO military official as well as certain members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

Policymakers should prepare for the worst of Russian intentions, meaning that NATO needs to devote far more attention to shoring up its eastern border in Europe, they warn.

“Crimea is lost, but it is only the beginning if Russia follows its ‘near-abroad’ policy of protecting Russian minorities elsewhere. East Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus could easily follow,” General Harald Kujat (rtd), former chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, told a closed policy group at the European Parliament on 18 March.

“The West should have used the opportunity to negotiate with Moscow that they would go no farther than Crimea, but we didn’t,” he said. “I fear we have opened the door to more action by Russia because Europe’s foreign policy is based on soft power - on values - and not hard interests like those of Russia. And when values meet hard power, they will always lose.

The sentence I bolded is of great import and its something Republicans should pound on hard. Soft power is of no use against Vladimir Putin, he respects force only.

“Soft power,” my pale white ass. The President bombed the shit out of Col. Mo’s forces and did Republicans respect him for that? Fuck no, they threatened to impeach him for violating the War Powers Act. Then the President threatened air strikes and cruise missile strikes on Syria to get it to abandon chemical weapons. Did Republicans rush to authorize the strikes? Fuck no, they ranted and raved about how he had to come to them for permission, but swore they’d never give it to him.

And now I’m supposed to fucking believe that Republicans can go out there and convince voters that “soft power” has failed and we need to look “strong” to scare off Putin? Go sell crazy somewhere else, because we’re all full up here.

Exactly. We moved naval units into the area and prepared for strikes, despite all the Republican warnings about how they’d deny funds for the operation and how they’d impeach him if he went through with it. Then, at the 11th hour, Putin comes forward with a negotiated plan to do away with the chemical weapons without using military force.

Did Republicans celebrate the President forcing Putin to turn on Assad? Fuck no, they congratulated Putin for “outsmarting” the White House and hailed him, with some suggesting that he should be on the short list for the Nobel Peace Prize.

re: #82 Kragar

I know a lot of Federal contracts are looking for technical writers, but a lot of them will want you to have at least a Security+ certification.

Do I have to have that ahead of time, or will they help me get one?

I’ve only ever been interviewed for others’ security clearances; never got my own.

For the cert: I think they’ll give you a small window to get one.

I spent about $100 on a study guide, studied for about 2 months, then paid $150 for the test and passed. Different companies might cover it, but they’ll probably prefer someone who has one already.

For the clearance, once you get hired and fill out the paperwork, they usual practice is to grant you an interim clearance with the expectation you will be granted a full clearance when it come around.

I filled my paperwork for my TS last August, they interviewed me in January and cleared me end of February.

Sounds good!

What cert would you recommend?

Thanks for all the help.

The Security+ is probably the cheapest and easiest to get, but check the requirement for different jobs. You should probably check around for some of the job postings first.

Which reminds me I need to buckle down and get my CISSP in the next few months

Here is an example of the kind of work I’m talking about; different companies will be looking for different specifics, but it should give you an idea

The “Child’s Play” movies are a big thing in many Latin American countries, even after considering they’re not much more than B-movie status here. The title doesn’t translate well, so they pretty much spoil the plot by titling it “Chucky: El Muñeco Satánico” (Chucky: The Satanic Doll).

The latest movie in the series (Curse of Chucky) went direct to video in the US, but it played in theaters in LatAm. Here’s a prank video at a bus stop in Brazil, with a poster for the latest movie.
