Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: Australia Says Possible Objects in Ocean

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) — Authorities have spotted two objects in the Indian Ocean that are possibly related to the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Thursday.

“New and credible information has come to light in relation to the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 in the southern Indian Ocean,” Abbott said in the the Australian House of Representatives in Canberra. “The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has received information based on satellite imagery of objects possibly related to the search.

“Following specialist analysis of this satellite imagery, two possible objects related to the search have been identified,” he said. “I can inform the House that a Royal Australian Air Force Orion has been diverted to attempt to locate the objects.”

I’m still pretty confident that the equipment failure/onboard fire theory is the closest to being right, if only because it makes the fewest assumptions.

Why didn’t any of the passengers use their phones to contact anyone? Strange questions still not answered.

No way cell phones would work all the way out there. Open water = no towers. I just have this sorta nonsensical worry-Dead crew live passengers kept out of the cockpit by the anti terror door. *shudder* Can’t be so too unlikely. Right?

OT, but I really must vent again about how much I can’t STAND Windows 8!

My mother in law loves playing online games. In the course of downloading some of those games she also installed some search/shop/toolbar crapware that I needed to get rid of.

I knew exactly what the program was called and how to get rid of it. Just go to control panel, then “add/remove programs”, find it and click “uninstall”. Simple, right?

Not in Windows 8.

After FIVE MINUTES of hopelessly searching through the desktop and those god awful tiles for the control panel without success, I finally went into the help section to figure out how to find the damned thing.

It gets better. When I search for “control panel” in the help section the first thing it tries to do is show me a VIDEO OF HOW TO FIND IT.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, if you skip the video, the help directions don’t actually tell you how to find the control panel, there’s merely a link that says “click here to go to the control panel”. I suppose I should be thankful the link actually worked.

My god, I can’t believe there was a group of people way, WAY above my pay grade who signed off on this thing as an acceptable design. I have yet to find one single thing I like about Win 8. Even relatively easy tasks like the aforementioned program removal or booting the system into safe mode are mind bogglingly complicated with this operating system.

I’d rather get kicked in the nuts ten times than get a computer with Windows 8 on it.

In mid-2008, the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) deleted the requirement for the P-8A to be equipped with magnetic anomaly detection (MAD) equipment in an effort to reduce weight by 3,500 lb (1,600 kg) to improve range and endurance.

Most of those problems have already been reduced or eliminated on aircraft now in production and the fixes will be retrofitted to older planes. The P-3 is at the end of its useful life, Gus, and the P-8 needs to replace it. It’s a done deal.

46 Gus  Wed, Mar 19, 2014 10:27:39pm

In particular, after some waffling back and forth, the Navy decided to leave off a sensor called the Magnetic Anomaly Detector (MAD), which can detect the metal hulls of submarines — if the plane flies low enough. MAD was crucial to the P-3′s traditional low-altitude tactics. Significantly, the P-8 variant that Boeing is building for the Indian Navy will still have it; only the US Navy P-8 will not. Both Rondeau and Boeing argue that the P-8 can more than compensate with more sophisticated sensors and by using its superior computing power to interpret their data.

The dumbest person on the internet weighs in on the breaking news regarding MH370. Not surprisingly, it is only slightly more plausible than the plane being swallowed by a black hole.

BREAKING: Intel Group With Source Inside Boeing Says Missing Flight #MH370 Went to Pakistan

Never mind that the plane would have run out of fuel well before it would have reached Pakistani airspace. Given the last-known location of the flight, the distance to even a remotely suitable landing strip in Pakistan (remember this is a 777 - a freaking BIG plane) would be nearly 1000KM additional distance than the scheduled flight path to Beijing.

This is America, 2014:

Don Huffines wants creationism taught as science in schools

I wonder how many drivers, either on the way home yesterday evening or on the way into work this morning, nearly veered off the road when they heard Shelley Kofler’s interview of Republican Senate nominee Don Huffines on KERA.

I managed to keep the wheel steady thanks to slow traffic, but it was only through great effort.
Kofler opened up with some questions about vouchers (Huffines is for them) and school choice (again, yes). Nothing unexpected there. Huffines is a strong conservative and fair arguments can be made for those things.

But then she drilled down deeper, into the curriculum. Would Huffines support teaching creationism in schools as science, she asked. (I haven’t been able to find a link yet.)

His response: the idea should get equal footing with scientific theory, presumably about evolution.
This is where I started tightening my grip.

Kofler gently reminded Huffines that, you know, the U.S. Supreme court has ruled that teaching creationism as science won’t wash. Maybe in a religion comparison course or something like that, it would be alright.

So she asked again, would you want it taught as science.

Huffines’ answer was a somewhat hesitant but nevertheless clear “yes.”

[…]

That Dallas Morning News blog writer goes on and tries to sound like she has some “conservative” sympathies, but the creationism thing seems to derail her.

The interview was on the local NPR affiliate:

Don Huffines, Likely Headed To Texas Senate, Supports Term Limits, School Choice, Creationism

Here’s the audio portion on education. The creationism question starts about 2:20 in, but the preceding portion is important too, because it’s about the dismantling of public education:

The conspiracy theorists are having a field day; if this is indeed from Flight MH370, there will, no doubt, be some screaming it was planted, and if/when the CVR and FDR are recovered, analyzed and we finally figure out what happened (personally, I’m leaning towards the theory by Chris Goodfellow - an onboard fire/incapacitation of the flight crew/flying on autopilot until MH370 ran out of fuel) there will still be CT’ists saying it’s all a false flag, a cover-up, etc. Sadly, there’s a whole lotta folks out there living in their own little alternate reality.

The pay isn’t swell, but he does get med coverage for him and his son, a “Christmas” savings acct, and a few other perks, like very low cost OTC and Rx drugs (a bottle of Tylenol for 50 cents, for instance). I looked up the co, it’s family owned and the scion/CEO of the orig owners/co is big on the NC Arts Council and also opened a craft brewery, the only one to attain LEED Gold Cert. A wingnut just told me that the minimum wage is a form of welfare, because in his mind, anything that the employer pays above what he values the value of an employee’s work at is welfare. Yeah, in his mind, wages that already can’t get a person working 40 hours a week above the poverty line are a form of welfare. Somebody please shoot me and put me out of my misery.

If you see labor as just another business expense to be minimized, like staples, toner or copier paper, then that view is entirely consistent.

Except that excess paper can be dumped out on to the streets with little social consequence…

And these people who like to go on about promoting “the dignity of work” seem to fail to realize that part of that dignity comes from being able to support one’s family and help educate them and set them on the path to a better and more prosperous life.

They think all workers (including salaried professionals) should work for NO PAY, just for the “Dignity of Work” (whatever the fuck that means) and anything else that the massa jrrb creator bestows upon them is a gift from the goodness of his heart and not because they earned it.

It’s one of those odd dichotomies that seems to affect the Right these days. One moment, “Diginity of work!” The next, “You’re worth nothing! Nothing, you lazy bastards.”

I’m sometimes amazed that their head don’t vanish in a flash of light as the two sides collide in a matter/anti-matter annihilation. I suppose we should be thankful they can prevent it somehow.

“Shell Pulls Out of Ukraine Deal Near Crimea

Company Withdraws From Talks on Skifska Field But Is Still Pursuing Other Ukraine Projects

online.wsj.com

LONDON— Royal Dutch Shell RDSB.LN -1.59% PLC said Wednesday that it withdrew from negotiations over an offshore exploration deal in the Black Sea, west of Crimea. Shell made the decision to pull out in January, a spokesman said.

“The Anglo-Dutch energy major was part of a group of companies including Exxon Mobil Corp. XOM -1.03% that struck a deal with the Ukraine government to develop the offshore Skifska oil-and-gas field.

(snip)

“The Ukrainian government announced the deal in 2012, but a Shell spokesman said Wednesday that Shell still hadn’t signed the agreement at the time it pulled out in January. The spokesman said Shell is still pursuing other Ukraine projects, including exploration for “tight” natural gas in underground rock formations.

“Shell’s withdrawal preceded pullouts from the region by Ford Motor Co. F -0.06% and retailer Metro AG MEO.XE +2.35% . Ford earlier this week said it would reassess a Russian joint venture. Metro postponed plans to issue an initial public offering of its Russian Cash & Carry business.”

If I ever get back to being able to afford a new car, I’d probably go with the Focus hatchback. I drove one once and fell in love with it.

Ever since I bought my first VW Rabbit in ‘83…I’ve had nothing but hatchbacks. It is amazing how much stuff you can put in one when you fold the back seat bottom up and the seat back goes down to make a nice large flat floor.

I put 8’ 2x4s in mine all the time. I take one of the rear floor mats and put in up on the dash…slide the 2x4 in so that one end rests on the floor-mat protected dash, the other end just inside the rear opening…and you can close the hatch.

I carry many old towels, t-shirts and other rags along with rope and bungee chords and I can protect interior objects, paint on the bumper cover, etc…and the car becomes a little van!

The key is to make sure everything is lashed down so there is no movement when driving. That and remember to drive home real slow and deliberate…nothing worse than driving like an ass and having to stop quick and getting a 2x4 whacking you in the side of the head or shooting into the front windshield. And it helps that the store is only a couple miles on surface streets.

Actually, I’ve done that in my ‘97 Saturn. The back seats fold down to make that kind of space, too. I used to garden a lot and would haul large bags of everything, stone, mulch, etc in it. Even some upholstered stuff will fit in (though not a couch!). And it’s a sedan. : ) I could load all kinds of things in that baby, as well the recent 2002 Saturn sedan I just bought to replace it.

I think someone higher than Booker has already tried his tactic, maybe not exactly one on one since there are so many, but good luck to him.

Cory Booker: My dinner with Ted Cruz

politico.com

“Booker said his meeting with Cruz was just one of many he has planned. In fact, he said he intends to sit down with every Republican in the Senate.

“I’m going to meet with every single Republican, every single one of my colleagues,” Booker said, saying he has been working with Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and has met with Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah).

So, if Booker found that Cruz could actually engage in “intellectual” discussions, it proves what many of us think—Cruz’s posturing is cynical theater for the unwashed, which I think is disgusting.

Those aren’t inconsistent, mind you.

I suspect that (and is borne out by my experience) that most RWNJs do think the vast majority of people are worth nothing.

I’m starting to think it’s due to the Deep South “nation” outlook, per Colin Woodward’s American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America, which I am almost done reading*.

Under-regulated capitalism without a strong social net and a system of redistribution of wealth will never work. What you will get is one small portion of the population accruing more and more of the capital, until the wealth divide destroys society.

Adam Smith recognized this long, long ago, sadly gets ignored by his supposed fans.

DF, one of the reasons the far right loves Russia these days is that the oligarchs in charge are running classic capitalism straight out of the 1800’s of the US & UK. There isn’t even the veneer of regulation and they eat that up.

Marx may not have had good solutions but his analysis of what Capitalism is remains as strong as that of Smith & Keynes. Just look to the arguments on Twitter by VB about the real value of labor… ;)

I was divorced at 21 and on my own; never remarried. One of my sons has 2 kids—his first at 28 and second at 31. My other son has no children. Florida…pfft. Ohio in 2004. I stood in line for close to three hours. Inner city change-over area with lots of African Americans…so they had to make sure we didn’t have enough machines. My ward was full up and the other ward’s machines were hardly used. It was very upsetting to see three machines sitting there with people able to walk right up.

Fun thing though…all the people were pretty cool. Lots of joking around about how nothing was going to stop them from voting against Bush. There were probably people voting at the school until about 9:30 that night.

Anyhow the gun fucking photo memes just amuse me. Buzzfeed had a good spoof not long ago, they replaced the attractive women in food ads with attractive men and you saw just how silly it is. If you replaced that blonde in your latest with a dude wearing a t-shirt and short shorts, it would be apparent to even the biggest wingnut gunfucker how stupid these hot women with gun photos are.

But that would only attract ghey men, since wimmins don’t get horny through the eyeballz like min do! Zat’s SKIENCE!

re: #233 ObserverArt

I do carry a couple towels and bungee chords in the hatch area at all times. The rest is added when I know what I’ll be trying to carry. My newer Rabbit has a Gorilla Mat in the back with 4 90° right angle brackets that stick to the mat like velcro. They are great for trapping stuff in place. I had a 5 gallon drywall primer in it the other day and used two of the brackets to hold it in place.

I had a shovel in there for a couple weeks when we had snow all over the place. It came in handy to get out of my alley to the main street as they city plowed the alley opening closed. Just used the split seat (for skis) to poke the handle through.

I’ve got a small movers blanket from Harbor Freight in the back of my Impala, same idea… I can drop the seats and get 8 foot lengths in with no problem. You’re right about getting things tied down, any shifting only gets worse.

re: #266 William Barnett-Lewis

There are countries still making the mistake of buying that POS? Their taxpayers are being ripped off.

Read the Soldier Systems piece, Will. Some of the comments are very much like yours and someone from U.S. Ordnance actually answers them to explain the changes they’ve made. The relevant comment is here, and I’ll quote part of it:

The Danish program is for the US Ordnance M60E6 not the old M60 you are familiar with.
With your extensive experience I’m sure you will then recognize how addressing each of points has resulted in the battle tested AND IMPROVED M60E6.

Here is a list of the issues we have addressed that I have culled out of your comments above

1. On the M60E6 the weapon can be loaded and top cover opened and closed with the bolt forward or with the weapon charged and bolt to rear. In addition we redesigned the feed cam so the system has 30% improved belt pull to overcome miss aligned ammo, debris in the links, and twisted belts. In fact we test our M60E6 models to the same belt pull standard as the US M240.
2. Our M60E6 features and improved OPERATING ROD and TRIGGER to PVT Dumbass proof the system
3. We corrected several areas where the system could be assembled incorrectly
a. Soldier Proof Reversible gas piston
b. Simplified gas system with fewer parts and eliminated they need for safety wire
c. Trigger retaining pin can only be inserted from the RIGHT correct side
d. I joined US Ordnance after a 15 year carrier in the technology sector so I was not “chosen to be anyone’s successors”
4. We have an extensive collections of transferable machine guns in our reference library and we are constantly going back to these models to check on field expedient improvements that were implemented. We also have 14 years of continuous user feedback regarding the systems we supply around the globe.
5. Likely unknown to you as the Company Armorer was an extensive list of Product Improvement Programs (PIP) that occurred in the late 1970s and 1980 on the M60. Some were obvious like the change from triple wire drive spring to the single wire and the change to double sear notch instead of one (see PVT Dumbass again).
a. One such improvement that had little external evidence was a change in the receiver assembly. Certain chamfers in the receiver channel were redesigned and the riveting procedure was changed. This did away with most of the receiver stretch you reference.
b. On our M60E4, E6 and M60D Enhanced models our channels our heat treated to modern standards and receiver stretch is an issue I have never seen in my 12 years at US Ordnance.
6. Our system still has the stellite barrel which you agree is a great feature.

One of my favorite quotes about Nixon was from Hunter S. Thompson:

He had the fighting instincts of a badger trapped by hounds. The badger will roll over on its back and emit a smell of death, which confuses the dogs and lures them in for the traditional ripping and tearing action. But it is usually the badger who does the ripping and tearing. It is a beast that fights best on its back: rolling under the throat of the enemy and seizing it by the head with all four claws.

That was Nixon’s style — and if you forgot, he would kill you as a lesson to the others. Badgers don’t fight fair, bubba. That’s why God made dachshunds.

They’ve been making claims like that since the early 80’s when I first had to deal with them and learned what a far superior design the M240 was.

The basic design is inherently flawed as it was based on a total misunderstanding of the FG-42 (the gas system, bolt & trigger are lifted from it) and the MG-42 (the belt feed is lifted from it). The misunderstanding of how the FG-42 bolt worked in full-auto mode was especially a major problem. Combine this with the badly designed quick change barrels and the various multitude of problems that have taken them 50 years to fix and you have a system that should have simply been scrapped decades ago by all users. I believe Ian at forgottenweapons.com has a few articles that go into detail on this.

just because you can somehow make a purse out of a pigs ear does not make it a good purse even if it’s been made somewhat prettier.

Well, the M60E6 does seem to work, and the Danes like its low 550RPM rate of fire as compared to the 1200RPM fired by the MG3. The M60E6 also has a optical mount and will mount optical sights developed originally for sale on semi-auto M60 and FN-MAG (M240) replicas. So it turns out the gun fuckers ended providing development funds for a gun and optics used by the Socialist Danes. how’s THAT for irony?

(Not to say that all who buy such semi-auto replicas are gun fuckers, but a sizable minority are.)

Now, I’m pretty ignorant when it comes to gunz, but as I understand it, bolt actions don’t actually >have magazines, yeah? Being that, you know, you load the single bullet directly into the chamber, hence the manual bolt?

Maybe I just don’t understand the terminology.

And why, if you have a weapon with magazines/clips, would you only carry one? Doesn’t that kind of defeat the purpose of magazines/clips?

Under-regulated capitalism without a strong social net and a system of redistribution of wealth will never work. What you will get is one small portion of the population accruing more and more of the capital, until the wealth divide destroys society.

Adam Smith recognized this long, long ago, sadly gets ignored by his supposed fans.

The Free Market is not an ideology in and of itself, it is merely a mechanism for balancing supply and demand and directing the flow of capital to where it does the most benefit.

And a market is not some Divine State unto itself, it relies heavily on a physical infrastructure and a legal/regulatory structure to work,, and those infrastructures cannot be left to the hands of those who profit from the system.

A poem for Steele Witch, who be aptly named

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

— John Donne

It was not originally a poem, but a prose meditation, but I suspect she won’t know the difference.

Resentment writ large, nonetheless. So tired of it.

Even if I had a hard time bringing up my chaps, that doesn’t mean I don’t want others to be able to get something for themselves and theirs. But that “something” should include everything available to everyone else, like housing, birth control, medical care, etc—stuff I was able to get because I had some work skills that too many just don’t get these days. I was fortunate because a lot of women of my generation didn’t have that and needed someone to support them, although even then, things were starting to change. Fortune is all going to the top these days and there are far too many at the bottom who are getting royally screwed to the wall, women and men, entire families. Even being termed “middle class” isn’t enough these days.

It’s a different era entirely. SusieQ probably would never have survived the childhood of some of us. I doubt she’s ever missed a meal in her entire life.

Thing is RWNJs are constantly harping on about how people need to work hard hard blah blah. Sure, they do and no one works harder than the working poor but you keep them in pertputal poverty by refusing to give them a chance. When you cut student loans. That’s one capable child that will be forced to drop out of college because he can’t afford it. When you cut food stamps. That’s another child going hungry. And here’s another RWNJs, when you refuse to raise the minimum wage, you’re encouraging people to become more dependent on government whether you like it or not.

I had a very creepy experience last night. Got multiple calls on both my cell and house phone which I kept rejecting because the number wasn’t familiar.

Finally answered because the phone wouldn’t stop. It was a travel agent saying that my credit card was declined and they could not confirm my flight to Morocco.

WTF!

I told them the card was compromised (it was actually cancelled over a year ago), hung up and called BofA to let them know there were bogus claims on the card SO MAKE SURE TO REJECT THEM.

Meanwhile the “travel agent” kept calling and calling and calling and calling trying to social engineer me into giving an active card number. Finally I said “I have already called BofA and if you call my phone one more time I am calling the FBI.”

Did not call again but it creeps me out that they have my house and cell phone.

Comment in a discussion about Hezbollah…

If I told you there was a significant group that violently defended their weapons, insisted on making religion the basis for law and morality, blocked laws aiming to abolish discrimination based on gender, race, religion or sexual orientation, rejected the authority of the central government and its right to collect taxes, threatened to secede or take over the country by force if necessary, and called everyone who opposed them in the least traitors to the nation and subhuman scum… what would you call them in the US?

The reply was…

Leftists.

Of course one would actually have to grasp the issues and have a full understanding of the history and the real claims from both sides, as opposed to simply being indoctrinated by one. As you are.

Today, much remains forbidden, especially for women: They are not permitted to socialize with men in public or reveal too much hair from under the headscarves they are required to wear. Security forces troll the streets to enforce these restrictive laws.

But behind closed doors, a more permissive world thrives. Young Iranians, including women, engage in the taboo: smoking, dancing, drinking, mingling with the opposite sex. There are no bars in Iran, so young people often meet at coffee shops, like the one pictured above. Proprietors post signs saying they’re not permitted to serve hookahs to women, but some do it anyway.

Iranian photographer Hossein Fatemi, now based in Chicago, spent years in his native country capturing these hidden lives.

re: #374 HappyWarrior

Yeah good point. Private charity can only do so much. Plus private charities have loads of other problems too.

“Private charity” foodbanks are funded less than 10% by private donations. The government buys warehouses full of food (as price support for farmers), they deliver it by the truckload (trucks and their drivers under taxpayer-funded federal government contract) to foodbanks, which then use city- or county-owned buildings and state-paid supervisors for volunteers to break it down into family-size packages for handouts.

Catholic Charities gets more than 60% of its budget from federal grants. That’s not even counting that the buildings they operate out of aren’t assessed property tax.

Yep Byrd, a very conservative Democrat who nearly got appointed to the USSC by Nixon. They can do this shit all they want but it’s all because they’re in denial about the fact that conservatives were totally against integration until the public as a whole knew civil rights was a good idea and they could say “See, we supported it” even though NR in the 50’s and 60’s was buying the crazy conspiracy theories about Civil Rights being a Communist plot.

Just because I think the record needs kept straight, the idiot brigades have better argument for Fred being a democrat than most. That’s because he ran for office multiple times (three times as governor, twice as Topeka mayor, a senate run). All in the 1990s, all as a Democrat. And he endorsed Al Gore during his 1988 run for president. By 2000, however, he and his church were screaming at him for supporting homosexuals.

That last gives a clue, by the way. He agreed more with Democrats than Republicans but believed they were being corrupted and misled, and it was his mission to restore them to purity.

It should, I think, concern people that he got 31% of the votes in the 1992 Democratic primary. But it does give legitimate fuel to the “he was a Democrat” arguments.

True enough. I guess my point is you can’t call him a liberal either which is what the implication by so and so was a registered Democrat. And while they point to the fact that the Phelpses supported Gore, they also ignore the fact that they later picketed Al Gore, Sr’s funeral and hurled insults at Al. Fred Phelps’ ideology did not resemble any liberal’s at all.
