Gotta admit I always liked that show. Especially Hillerman. Selleck’s character was more interesting than most TV characters and it was usually decently written (not up to Rockford standards but close) but Hillerman’s portrayal Jonathan Quayle Higgins III was what really made the show shine in the wasteland of network TV.

Yeah, there were so many things that were combined to make a great series. Beginning with Bellisario, the music by Mike Post and others. The cast. Higgins. Living in a huge estate right off a Hawaiian beach. Magnum’s humor. The helicopter scenes. The red Ferrari. Murder and intrigue and he got paid more than $200 a day plus expenses. The Vietnam stuff got a little intense.

A baby gorilla at the San Diego Zoo saw its family for the first time since birth.
The little gorilla was born March 12 via a rare emergency cesarean section. It then contracted pneumonia, but was well enough to take its first trip out of the veterinary hospital to meet other members of the gorilla troop, including mother Imani.
The re-introduction will take time, and it may be a bit before the baby physically goes back to its mother. Keepers held onto the baby and let troop members come see her through a protective barrier early Friday morning.

NRA moves to new arena in fight over surgeon general
In recent years, the National Rifle Assn. has stepped into fights over judicial nominees it views as weak on 2nd Amendment rights, but its decision to oppose a surgeon general nominee takes the powerful lobby into new territory, expanding its campaign to a post that has no direct power to regulate guns.
President Obama’s nominee, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, a Massachusetts internist and former emergency room doctor, has called for more stringent gun laws. But he also testified at his Senate confirmation hearing last month that he would not use the surgeon general’s office as a bully pulpit to push for them.
The NRA, though, has pledged to block his appointment, arguing that it reflects the Obama administration’s intent to extend the gun control debate to new arenas.
“Gun owners in this country don’t have a guarantee that this surgeon general will not engage the gun issue,” NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said.
The lobby’s new move could help keep the volatile issue alive in an election year when Democrats hope it will disappear because it could hurt moderate senators in competitive races.Some political analysts who closely watch the influential organization suggest that the NRA’s stance also reflects an organization that needs such high-profile skirmishes to keep its more than 5 million members energized and that is increasingly pushed to compete with smaller firearm groups that are farther to the right.

Angela Wright, who in 1984 worked as public affairs director at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission — which polices sexual harassment claims — during Thomas’s long tenure as chairman, shared similar accounts with Senate investigators.
Once, when walking into an EEOC seminar with Thomas, he asked her, “What size are your breasts?” according to the transcript of her Senate interview.
Her story was corroborated by a former EEOC speechwriter, who told investigators that Wright had become increasingly uneasy around Thomas because of his comments about her appearance.

Georgetown Student Charged with Having Ricin
A 19-year-old Georgetown University student told investigators that he learned how to manufacture ricin by researching on the Internet on his iPhone, then bought the needed materials at Home Depot and a plant store, according to court documents.
Daniel Harry Milzman, 19, of Bethesda, Md., has been charged with possession of a biological toxin — a federal offense — after he told his residential adviser about the powdery substance earlier this week.
The university said there was no immediate danger to students, but the ricin was strong enough to be lethal if inhaled or injected, according to the charging documents. Milzman told investigators he wore a mask while making the powder.
Authorities were called to McCarthy Hall in the 3700 block of O Street NW early Tuesday morning after Milzman showed his RA the ricin. He had kept the powder in a plastic bag and sealed it with hockey tape, the charging documents said.

Geologically how old are these trees? Isotopic geological data and other dating methods give dates from the youngest layers of the Black Forest Bed about 211 million years ago to the oldest Blue Mesa layers at about 218 million years ago.
How freaking awesome is it that you—a human who in the greater scheme of things has a miniscule lifespan—can reach out and touch something with that kind of history and connect with it on some level?

The NRA has had to smack down a large number of conspiracy theories in the last couple years and over time that makes enemies because of people who think “Where there’s smoke there’s fire.” and who cannot accept that the ‘smoke’ is just brain farts from lunatics.
That said, all the NRA has is Murthy’s word he won’t try to push an anti-gun agenda and its easy to argue they should not take it.
Lastly, getting the Senate to block Murthy helps showcase the NRA’s power, drives a wedge between Obama and a number of Democratic senators, and hands Obama a visible defeat in the blocking of his second appointee without a filibuster.

My biggest pet peeve along these lines is the ludicrous chess scene in Blade Runner (cyborg kibitzes a chess position and spots a queen sacrifice that leads to checkmate in 2 moves, and helpfully lets the human player know of this).
Sorry, chess does not work like that. Such a position only occurs as a result of a combination by the human player the whole point of which was to set up the sacrificial checkmate. In other words, anyone capable of getting to that position would have no difficulty at all in seeing the sacrificial finale.

There’s an interesting corollary to the ‘we are star stuff’ story.
It turn out that the light elements (i.e., Iron and the lighter elements) form in massive stars as they age and can be spread out into interstellar dust clouds when the stars go supernova (i.e., explode).
Elements heavier than iron do not form within massive stars as part of normal stellar nuclear reactions. Instead, these elements are formed in the extreme conditions of the supernova itself.
So the atoms in that gold ring were literally created in the instants of one or more supernova explosions.

Ok, I’m wide awake now. I heard what sounded like a BANG a little while ago but I figured they were doing something at the fire station next door. We have military helicopters flying around here pretty often so when I heard the sounds of one I thought it was one of them. As the sound got louder I walked outside and saw a medical helicopter coming down and landing at the fire station. Someone got hurt there, probably from that small explosion I heard. I saw them take him out of the ambulance and put him in the helicopter then watched it take off.

I hope he can find something good. My cousin works with a woman who’s insurance that she’s had for years was cancelled. She works part time and went on the Healthcare website looking for new insurance. The most inexpensive insurance plan she qualifies for will cost more per month than she makes at her job. She now has no insurance.

My grandson showed me a photo from his pharmacy run last night of a van with a license plate that said, “HackedS4”. Heh. Said he got paid to watch TV at a nursing home while he waited—a sci-fi show was on. Problem is, those long waiting times make your night longer. They carry a lot of narcotics, and it’s important that they be accounted for very carefully.
I’ve only ever seen one case against this particular company with the NC pharmacy board, and it involved a female pharmacy tech who stole oxycontin (an unaccounted for amt) in 2006 and the male pharmacist who eventually noticed the losses, or perhaps hid them, and did not report her in a timely manner. Both lost their jobs, of course and she lost her registration.
He told me the Tramadol I was prescribed (after I’d told the PA no opiates) is considered a narcotic. I just don’t tolerate those, and it disturbs me that medical personnel don’t listen to “little old ladies” as they ought to do. I’ve been offered them 3x in the last couple of months—offered, not asked for them. The Tramadol went into the trash bin, along with the prednisone.

Yes, for a lot of countries in continental Europe the threshold is 5%, including here in the Czech Republic. Turkey has an unusually high threshold; perhaps the idea is to prevent smaller fringe parties from getting in. That’s the only thing I can think of, but that 5% threshold seen in many parts of Europe has pretty much the same effect. There’s a far-right party here, the DSSS, that constantly campaigns, but I think there highest share ever was 1.6%, effectively excluding them from the Czech Parliament. Even at the local level, they perform poorly, never meeting the threshold.

The EU wants the US to expand exports of Liquified Natural Gas. President Obama has been reluctant because of fracking and because there are thoughts that we should reduce production and use our gas domestically. That latter objection is likely to be swept away now, and te former should fall as well, perhaps with some carefully formulated regulations on fracking. But energy exports to Europe are a good idea, as they will free our allies from dependance on Russia.

I don’t agree with fracking—I think it’s dangerous and poisonous in the long run. The thing is, the decisions and research into carbon based resources is all about money as well. Money not only is poisoning people, it’s poisoning our politics, and any fool should be able to see that. Research in alternative forms of energy should have been ongoing over the last 50 or so years, as an intensive program, as well as conservation of resources; unfortunately, we still can’t see past our noses where more easily available carbon based sources are available.
In the short term, though, as a political move, I wouldn’t be adverse to this proposal, although I’d put a limit on it to current supplies.

Rescues are great, but be careful that you know what you are getting into. We have a dog who was rescued as an adult from a puppy mill, and she will always be quite impaired. We say she is a cross between a dog and a guinea pig - and that is with way more attention and love than most dogs get (I work at home). An adult who was raised with a family and now needs a new home is much different than an adult who never had any socializing when she was growing up.

The proposed shield law is a step in the right direction, but leaving out bloggers and freelancers is a mistake. Bloggers, such as our own host here, and freelancers often do reputable work and deserve the same kind of protection as journalists working for standard news agencies.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has weighed in against the bill.

In GG’s case, a shield law would not have protected him or excluded him, since everyone knows who his main source is. Snowden would not qualify as a journalist of any stripe, since he has not published or analyzed any of the purloined papers and PPTs that I am aware of. But, then, I kinda like a slow transition into warm weather. It is a laborious process and it’s hard to do a lot of this stuff yourself, the average person isn’t going to be able to pile through a 600 page technical NASA document. A lot of times you can detect the BS when reporters use phrases like “some people are saying” or “could this thing be happening”. It’s usually a sign of BS. Recently I find myself just believing less of what I read or whatever viral story is making the rounds. It’s almost impossible to detect all the bullshit so I’ve become more agnostic about everything.

That’s why I remain agnostic on stuff I don’t bother fact checking. It might be true or not but if the initial claim doesn’t seem credible or comes from a non-credible source, I just skip it. Sometimes out of curiosity I’ll look into this stuff but there are only so many hours in the day. If I’m looking for credible information I try to stick to credible sources. It just saves time.

I’m late to the party, but here’s my take on science related news stories. It seems that in the majority of the cases where they start getting major mainstream news coverage, it’s almost always due to some small part of it being blown out of proportion, extended and expanded far beyond what the actual content is, then the MSN extending that.
I’ve learned to take pretty much everything with a large grain of salt and skepticism. The kind of hyperinflated “SCIENTISTS SAY {XXXX}” headlines do a real disservice to the kind of reasoned and nuanced science reporting that is so hard to find. Don’t look to the Discovery Channel, Learning Channel, or Nat Geo for much of it any more. (Cosmos being the rare exception)

If we hadn’t discussed the bogus NASA study we wouldn’t have found out it was bogus.
The study is being submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, is actually a relatively stuffy and ordinary analysis that, yes, even apparently stable and large civilizations can complex when one part of them or another—in this case, sustainability of resources and available wealth for different groups—gets out of whack.
The paper is here:
It is written by respected academics, comes from an institution that has a very traditional structure, with external advisory boards, a good leadership team (Including Bill Fagan, who is very cool).
The Guardian saying that the paper is predicting a collapse is silly; there is no prediction in the paper. That’s a big, typical media fail.
The political and media spin of it as ‘progressive’ politics is of course an arguable thing. I would say that progressive politics, while concerned with issues of sustainability, are not actually primarily or even secondarily concerned with environmentalism and so the claim that only progressive policies can stave off collapse isn’t true, it’d actually take a set of policies that are so far outside the mainstream of politics they’re not really conceivable right now, but the path towards those policies lies through progressive policies.
The other criticizable part of the study is that it is doing mathematical modeling of economic and social events of massive complexity. In no way should the conclusions of the paper be taken as fact, but that’s not what scientists do when they publish a paper, they are offering a theory, and expecting it to be criticized. There probably are variables overlooked in this study, contingent explanations that can be given for some of these societal events. The paper may, in fact, be wrong about all of its conclusions.
But by actually declaring their methods, by showing their work, by making a real, scientific argument and opening themselves up to criticism by transparently publishing for peer review, they are adding to our knowledge. Also, if the study was bullshit, they would not submit it for peer review, they would send it to an open journal or publish it through some other means.

They aren’t aiming to model human civilization, but are aiming to provide some general theoretical insights into how civilizations might collapse. Models start simple and over time complexity is added in, and so you cannot criticize scientists for this, unless they make grand claims on the basis of simple, crude models.
It is not a bogus study. It is a completely valid study, and when you let bad science reporting making you dismiss the science, you are being as big an idiot as if you credulously believe the bad science reporting.

If you’re contracting drywall repair, it cuts down on the BS - if the drywall guy(s) are also going to paint it.
I’m restoring a 100+ year old home and I don’t think I could get ordinary drywall guys to do what I am doing. I’m trying to keep as much original plaster as I can going…so shoring the plaster up and then where the dry wall is going, I am having to shim the wall and ceiling joists/runners etc. to bring them to a level surface so the drywall hangs as straight as possible and meets the same level as the old surface so I can rehang all the woodwork. The wood frame is tough as hell old yellow pine/spruce (?) and almost hand hewn.
All the drywall has been hung and most of it is pretty well finished. I’m doing spot duty in one of the living (parlor) rooms. Still have the second coats to do in the main (formal) living room and the dining room. I primed the upper/lower hallway and staircase last weekend. Starting on refinishing some of the woodwork for it. I also have 5 new doors to finish and hang on the upper bedrooms and bathroom.
I am not trying to be spot-on perfect…I want it all to come off like an old home that has some ‘character’ to it, just finished off nicely. Old plaster walls were far from perfect.
The place was a mess when I got it. I call it an old slum-landlord rooming house. Luckily there was enough of the original place and fittings to make it what it once was…a pretty classic old Dutch Tudor brick/sandstone house with a real steep roof! Actually a full four floors…attic above the third floor. And a bomb-shelter basement with 20” thick limestone walls around the outside, and two of them running down the center to support the middle of the house and mimics the hallway. Seriously built.
It’s my second career!

I was discussing the merits of fact checking on another forum recently. It is a laborious process and it’s hard to do a lot of this stuff yourself, the average person isn’t going to be able to pile through a 600 page technical NASA document. A lot of times you can detect the BS when reporters use phrases like “some people are saying” or “could this thing be happening”. It’s usually a sign of BS. Recently I find myself just believing less of what I read or whatever viral story is making the rounds. It’s almost impossible to detect all the bullshit so I’ve become more agnostic about everything.

Some of the first societal collapse models started because of the Easter Islands. Obviously, that’s a closed-off environment, but even though we can import raw materials and they can’t, obviously we still have natural and environmental limits in our society, too. It’d be kind of silly to think there aren’t any limits for us, or that massive wealth inequity isn’t destabilizing to society.

Hat’s off to you. I helped out some friends doing work on an old farm house they had bought. Seriously string construction, but over all the years, I’m not sure that there was anything in that house that was plumb, square or level to anything else. Did a lot of teaking and tuning as we went. :)

Had a 60+ year old lathe & plaster house in Miami that was framed in *hard* yellow Dade pine.
Figured out that drilling small pilot holes before nailing or screwing any renovation was the way to go.
e.g. without drilling pilot holes, even nailing with a 22 oz Bluegrass hammer was pretty much bent nail futile - and broken screws with a screw gun.
But you’re beyond that part of renovation.
And you’re a better man than I, as on a previous house I figured out that sheetrock ain’t for me.

“We” didn’t discuss it. Gus brought it to everyone’s attention and actually took the time to take a look at the study itself.
You then gleefully latched onto to it as it gave you an opportunity to engage in your favorite pastime of pointing & laughing at progressives in general and DKos in particular. Then, like a broken record, you segued into your other usual B.S. about fact checking & being an “agnostic” consumer of news.
After that others, like Obdi, took time to go look at it.
Seems to me more like there were people having a discussion and one guy standing on the sidelines behaving as if we’re in junior high school and he’s the cool kid, rolling his eyes and mocking all the others.
