Beakus were commissioned to create three animated films that explain key concepts about our universe, with humour helping to explain the ‘almost’ unexplainable! Director Amaël Isnard also designed the films.

In ‘How Big Is The Universe?’ ROG astronomer Liz shows us the expanding nature of the Universe and how this affects the light reaching us from distant galaxies, some of which will remain forever hidden from our view.

WTF?

A mysterious plume that showed up on National Weather Service radars is still puzzling people.

The radars first picked up the plume in Socorro County Monday evening, then went east into Texas and Oklahoma.

The weather service offices in El Paso and Albuquerque didn’t know what caused it, so KOB Eyewitness News 4 called White Sands Missile Range. Officials there didn’t know what it was.

KOB also called Holloman and Cannon Air Force bases. They were both just as baffled as everyone else. For now, the mystery remains

A New Mexico man has pleaded guilty to making threats against President Barack Obama and is facing up to five years in federal prison.

Prosecutors say Tracy York White, of Las Cruces, entered into a plea agreement Thursday in a Las Cruces court.

White remains in federal custody pending his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.

He was arrested last October, days after making the threats.

A criminal complaint alleged that White threatened Obama during an Oct. 24 telephone conversation with an employee of the Social Security Administration in Ohio.

White allegedly threatened to get a firearm, go to the White House and shoot the president.

In case you needed more convincing that the religious right in this country are moving even more atavistically, consider this blog entry by Denny Burke, one of Mullah Mohler’s (head of one of the main seminaries of the largest denomination in the US) bulldogs at SBTS:

Complementarian changes at Cedarville University

Christianity Today has a report on changes taking place at Cedarville University. The new president, Thomas White, has shifted the school into a decidedly Complementarian direction. […]

[…] Thomas White discussed the concept of headship based on 1 Corinthians 11:2-16. “We operate with the presupposition of inerrancy. So what I tell you today is not something that I wrote, I made up, or I started,” he said. “I’m just going to preach to you what the text says.”

Cedarville, which recently weathered a turbulent year of disagreements and resignations, has also restricted classes in the women’s ministry program—functionally, every Bible class in the fall schedule taught by a woman—to only female students, according to alumni and a university representative…

[…]

For some, this report will be anything but good tidings. For me, it is a sign of great things happening at Cedarville. I am grateful for Thomas White and his leadership. Read the rest of the report here.

The Christianity Today story adds this:

The Ventriloquist also reports on a university-wide reorganization that eliminates associate and assistant vice president positions so that many areas of the college are directly under the administration of the presidential cabinet.

It’s all very Putin-esque.

The bottom line is this: fundamentalists are pushing for gender segregation and the subordination of women.

For them it is what God told them to do.

And since God ordains authoritarianism, that is how it will be accomplished.

The CA GOP has officially given up.

One of the four gubernatorial candidates introduced to at the California Republican state party’s semi-annual convention last week spent a decade in prison for convictions for voluntary manslaughter and assault with intent to commit rape, according to the LA Times.

Speaking before hundreds of delegates and supporters, Glenn Champ, 48, did not directly address colorful history, choosing instead to explain, “In my life, I’ve been held accountable because of my stupidity. I do not want anyone else to be enslaved because of their lack of knowledge.”

Champ was one of four candidates speaking at the convention - introduced by party chairman Jim Brulte - speaking between leading GOP gubernatorial candidates, former U.S. Treasury official Neel Kashkari, and state Assemblyman Tim Donnelly of San Bernardino County.

Champ’s criminal history is extensive. Court records show that he pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed firearm in 1992. In 1993, he was convicted of two counts of assault with intent to commit rape and was placed on the state’s sex-offender registry.

And this is one of the guys who made it to the final 4?

See, that’s the thing with people doing ad buys with stations owned by the megabroadcasters (Clear Channel, especially); my understanding is that, unless a client tells the ad rep to specifically exclude their spots from running on specific shows, the ad rep is going to push running the spots in as many slots as they’re getting money for, anytime.

As the CEO of BENS, McInerney assisted in passage of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) which prohibits the development, production, and stockpiling of chemical weapons.

From 1994, McInerney was Director of the Defense Performance Review (DPR), reporting to the Secretary of Defense and Vice President Al Gore who conceived this initiative for the Federal Government. In that capacity, McInerney led the Pentagon’s “reinventing government” effort, focused on making government more efficient by using the latest and best business practices.

Snowden documents used to expose NSA operations again

NSA infiltrates servers of Chinese telecommunications giant

The U.S. National Security Agency has infiltrated servers in the headquarters of Chinese telecommunications and internet giant Huawei Technologies Co, obtaining sensitive information and monitoring the communications of top executives, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

The newspaper said its report on the operation, code-named “Shotgiant,” was based on NSA documents provided by Edward Snowden, the former agency contractor who since last year has leaked data revealing sweeping U.S. surveillance activities. The German magazine Der Spiegel also reported on the documents.

One of the goals of the operation was to find any connections between Huawei and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, according to a 2010 document cited by the Times.

Amen. As a man of God, he is going back to fix the crooked places that have led to our current catastrophe. There is a parallel to our spirituality and our nations prosperity. God has sent a deliverer, CHAMP to lead the way back to righteousness and prosperity.

…The bottom line is this: fundamentalists are pushing for gender segregation and the subordination of women…For them it is what God told them to do.

I agree completely. It’s been ages since I read anything in the bible, but from what I read nowadays about the Old Testament, subordination of women was one of its specialties. E.g. Deuteronomy 22:13-21 says that if a man discovers on his wedding night that his bride is not a virgin, he must stone her to death on her father’s doorstep.

Ship/barge collision in Galveston Bay late today. The barge was carrying something north of 1,000,000 gallons of heavy crude and is leaking in the immediate area of a bird sanctuary during prime migration season.

Damn.

Let me see what I can find. This will be a Coast Guard/Texas General Land Office response.

Okay, bunker fuel, usually used on cargo ships, not heavy crude. The collision was earlier today. Up to 168,000 gallons released. Fog is hampering the response. The barge is boomed off, but a lot of oil is loose in the bay. West of Galveston Island. That area contains very sensitive wetlands.

And that guy in #124 has *got* to quit eating “Tiger Cry” from the local Thai restaurant.

Awesome article by Yulia Tymoshenko, former Prime Minister of Ukraine:

“We won’t be visiting anyone with tanks and machine guns, but we have a different army. It is an army that cannot be stopped by borders, trenches, anti-tank fortifications or minefields. It is our Ukrainian army of freedom, democracy, human dignity and spirit. And it is already on the march. Ukraine is fulfilling its mission, which includes the liberation of Russia.

“I believe that everything will be fine.”

I’m surprised he would make such a mistake, but Putin may have underestimated how strongly many Eastern Europeans would feel about his actions in Crimea. And he may have underestimated Obama and Merkel as well.

Putin might well be overestimating the strength and influence of his fifth column in this country. There are plenty of them, of course, and they make a lot of noise but appearances could be deceptive in this case. Putin is a smart guy but he may not have the insight into the subtleties of American culture and politics to realize just how insignificant, and (more importantly) how insincere, these people really are.

This reminds me of the 1972 quote by the then-head of the KGB, Yuri Andropov, to the Soviet Politburo that “We will win the Vietnam War not in Vietnam, not at the Paris talks, but in the streets of America.” (Andropov went on to be the leader of the USSR.)

I guess Andropov’s prediction had some merit. But I agree with you: when it comes to predictions, Putin apparently is no Andropov. He may have very badly misread the situation in America. He may have seen what he desperately wanted to see, especially the major vulnerability shown by Palin’s getting 46% of the vote in 2008. It kills me that Putin has a point there. But Obama is the President, not Palin.

Some people want you to think the Koch brothers’ influence on US politics is a conspiracy theory, and you should just laugh it off. Don’t listen to this cynical bullshit. The amount of money the Koch brothers are spending to bend the US political system to the far right is utterly unprecedented.

Who Controls the Kochs’ Political Network? ASMI, SLAH and TOHE.

It’s not even a deep dark secret. Very blatantly, the Kochs are using their billions to transform America, through both the political system and by direct advertising, into what they want.

And they are not alone. I’m not real big into class theory (I think modern anthropology has come to a better understand of how we humans organize ourselves), but I do think that the ultra-wealthy have created for themselves a special social bubble, where frankly we are not all equal in their vision.

134 freetoken  Sat, Mar 22, 2014 10:11:56pm

As Weigel pointed out yesterday:

“God Bless the Koch Brothers!”

[…]

“They have paid so much money,” says the woman. Vitter interrupts her.

“I think the Koch brothers are two of the most patriotic Americans on the face of the Earth,” he says. There are cheers from the crowd. “I’ll be honest with you. My reaction is: God bless the Koch brothers. They’re fighting for our freedom.”

[…]

Upstream I linked to the increasingly authoritarian nature emerging in the current Christian fundamentalist thought in corners of this country. Authoritarianism is nothing new to religion, especially forms of Christianity. But that is very old-world type of thinking. American protestants by and far were strong anti-authoritarians (and hated papists with a passion.) They were household “authoritarian” in a patriarchal sense, but at least all men were created equal.

However, recently I believe there is emerging a shift in American fundamentalist thought and practices. The turn towards authoritarianism dovetails nicely (and quite conveniently, *cough*) for the mega-rich in this country.

By now associating great wealth with God’s blessing the current marriage of American fundamentalist Christianity is turning increasingly from its roots of being very much a pro-common man’s religion.

The use by the ultra-rich in controlling the GOP through convincing the religious right to take up their cause is a sight to behold. 50 years ago fundamentalist religious leaders in this country might have disagreed over race, but both the Southern white believer and the Northern anti-segregationist would both agree that people like the Rockefellers were evil.

Fast forward 50 years, and now we have fundamentalists lavishing praises on billionaires whose goal are to control the society.

Anyway, Weigel goes on:

What’s Vitter’s angle? I don’t immediately see one; I think it’s something in the air.

I think Weigel under appreciates the religiosity of Americans, especially those today who are taking over the GOP.

That depends on what is Putin’s long term goal with all this. If it’s only Crimea he wants, then I say he played well his cards[0]. The farther he goes into the region[1], the more serious his miscalculation. And that’s without considering Turkey.

As far as Obama is concern, he should know better. The only reason Russia had to deal with Syria was because Obama was going to open fire on Assad.

How Obama Crippled a Russian Bank with a Stroke of a Pen

He may not take shirtless horseback rides across the steppes, or have a black belt in judo, but on Thursday, President Obama sent a message to Russian president Vladimir Putin about strength. Specifically, economic strength.

The message was this: Whenever I decide to, I can pick up a pen, and kill a significant financial institution in your country.

Obama’s victim was the St. Petersburg-based Bank Rossiya.

In response to Russia’s takeover of the Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, Obama yesterday authorized the Treasury Department to add 20 members of Putin’s inner circle, as well as Bank Rossiya, to the Office of Foreign Asset Control’s list of “specially designated nationals.”

Who uses birth control? Irresponsible people, says state senator

“We thought it was a strange idea at first but very quickly came to the realization that this could be beneficial,” pub owner Tom Frederick told The New York Times. “It’s all about protecting a child.”

Alaska has not opted to accept money through the government’s Medicaid expansion, which would pay for birth control. Earlier this month, Kelly’s colleague, Republican Sen. Fred Dyson, said during a debate on the state senate floor regarding an abortion bill that the government should not pay for family planning services for low-income women since birth control is affordable.

“Even the most [sexually] active folks don’t need to spend more than $2 or $3 a day for covering their activity,” Dyson said.

“No one is prohibited from having birth control because of economic reasons,” he said, arguing that women can buy condoms for the cost of a can of pop and get the pill for the price of four to five lattes each month.”

There are so many things wrong with this line of thinking, I’ve decided it’s just not worth innumerating them. Also Paged.

It’s an overlay of prosperity gospel thought onto more standard fundamentalism. Formerly, prosperity gospelites were a somewhat distrusted offshoot of Pentecostals, but after several decades they’ve become part of the herd. Now, Christians of that ilk identify wealth with godliness, because God loves rich people more, or something. And like you say, conservative Christians love authority figures, and the Kochs sure do throw around their “authority” with a heavy and golden hand.

Republicans are now the party of the rich and godly, while Democrats are the party of the poor and unbelievers. It’s the same us-versus-them philosophy that not coincidentally is also in the Old Testament. God rewards his chosen, and smites the Others. The other lessons from the OT and NT about charity, love, etc., are ignored. Also, that bit about the camel and the eye of the needle.

“The Kremlin agreed to allow a team of international monitors to work elsewhere in Ukraine. “

Russian Forces Take Over One of the Last Ukrainian Bases in Crimea

“The first civilian observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, a group that includes Russia, were expected to arrive by Saturday night, according to a spokeswoman. The agreement established the monitoring mission for six months, saying it could grow to 500 members if needed.

(snip)

“A statement from Russia said that excluding Crimea “reflects the new political-legal realities” because it has “become part of Russia.”

With a Chris Christie comeback looking less likely and a Jeb Bush shadow campaign only just now entering its preliminary stages, the political media that isn’t tethered to the Hillary Clinton beat — where news of no news is treated as news — has turned its eyes to Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul, the man who will singlehandedly bring his party into the 21st century by referencing modern cultural touchstones like Pink Floyd, Domino’s pizza and Monica Lewinsky. The narrative, pushed by Paul’s office and accepted by bored, middle-aged members of the press, is that the 51-year-old libertarian is just what Republicans needs to win over millennial voters and reclaim the White House in 2016.

To be blunt: This is a stupid narrative and everyone who isn’t being paid by the Republican Party to promote it needs to stop.

Foreign Ministry employees declare general strike, paralyzing Israel’s diplomatic system

Strike is culmination of renewed sanctions, protesting Finance Ministry’s failure to address diplomats’ grievances.

“Foreign Ministry employees declared a general strike on Sunday, following two weeks of renewed sanctions. The strike is expected close down the country’s foreign missions and totally paralyze the Israeli diplomatic system.

“For the first time since the establishment of the state, 103 Israeli missions abroad will be closed, as will the Foreign Ministry’s headquarters in Jerusalem. Both will be closed completely, and for an indefinite period of time, to protest the employment conditions of Israeli diplomats and the Finance Ministry’s decision to cut their salaries over the renewed sanctions.

BTW, I was born in 1941 (technically not a “war baby” since it was in Feb) and one of those who actually had no “generation” title (I think I’ve seen “Donut Generation” somewhere, though. : )

I was born at the end of ‘61. Depending on what range you believe, they try and put me into the boomer category. I think many of us born at the beginning of the 60’s are just a limbo generation. Kinda stuck at the edges of the arbitrary generation definitions.

Yes, same w/my kids, born in 1959 and ‘60—they are categorized as “boomers” but are nowhere near the typecast average” boomer type, although if a generation is around 20 yrs, and the “boomers” started in 1946, it would have lasted until 1966, and many of those wouldn’t have participated in the “hippie” and anti-war movements, which is said to be typical of “boomers” (they would have been far too young). I expect there were more participants in those movements from the war years or even earlier (as I was) than people would expect, leftovers from the “Beat Generation”. Generations overlap constantly, as we know.

It’s a Steyr AUG, Killgore. It looks odd because it is a bullpup-type rifle, with the magazine behind the trigger group rather than in front of it as the case on the AKM. It was originally designed in Austria, and bullpups are common in European armies. The bullpup configuration remains largely unpopular for rifles in North America and so the AUG looks odd to US, Canadian, and Mexican eyes.

Not agreeing that the Democrats are the party of the unbelievers. The majority of Blacks/Latinos who make up the Democratic base are very religious. But I get your overall point.

I think it threatens more than bird migration.

Texas Oil Spill Threatens Bird Migration

abcnews.go.com

“The cleanup of an unknown amount of thick, sticky oil that spilled into the Galveston Bay blocked traffic Sunday between the Gulf of Mexico and one of the world’s busiest petrochemical transportation waterways, affecting all vessels, even cruise ships.

“A barge carrying nearly a million gallons of marine fuel oil collided with a ship Saturday afternoon, springing a leak. Officials believe only one of the barge’s tanks — which holds 168,000 gallons — was breached, though the Coast Guard said Sunday it wasn’t clear how much oil had spilled.

“Crews were skimming oil out of the water and about six and half miles of containment booms were being used to protect environmentally sensitive areas of the Houston ship channel, the Coast Guard said, and it expects the leftover oil to be removed from the damaged barge Sunday, after which it will be taken to a local shipyard to be assessed.” More

EVERYTHING.

I think that’s the most annoying thing about this whole affair[0]: nothing is surprising for anyone following the events from 9/11. What’s “worst”[2]: Nothing revealed so far demonstrate high rates of abuses. Reforms are needed to tighten gray areas, but so far, the NSA is doing their work extremely well.

And that’s the “good” side3 of the whole affair.

[0] Aside from the Greenwald and the Clown Briggate[1].
[1] Or is it the Clown Comrades? Hard to keep up these days.
[2] From the sensationalist “journalism” point of view.
[3] The whole international spying subplot is a lot more damning on Snowden, and Greenwald than the national side.

A buddy and I used to be great crappie fisherdudes up here in Ohio. Bluegills too. We learned to catch them at all times of the year. Much of that is due to understanding water temps and their environment. We mainly used real tiny jigs with white, red, green and black twister tails and small open face reels with 1-2 lb test line. For bluegills, it was small jigs with a little bit red worm, sometimes a fuzzy tail or a twister tail.

Have you ever broiled your crappies? I’d have a dip of egg and a touch of soy sauce, roll them in corn meal and place on a lightly oiled sheet and broil them for like 1.5 minutes a side. They’d come out almost like deep fried…and no deep frying! Crappie as so light a fish it doesn’t take long to cook ‘em up.

And while I like all kinds of freshwater fish…I love a nice bunch of hand sized bluegills. Almost the same taste as a yellow perch and available everywhere. We fished a lake here in Columbus with shale embankments going down into deep water. Bounce a jig off the shale and let it fall naturally into the water and boom…off goes a big bluegill.

Great times. I still have my 14’ boat, trailer and motor. Just haven’t used it for years.

Jimmy Carter Is Pretty Sure The NSA Is Spying On His Email

In an interview with NBC’s Andrea Mitchell airing during Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” Carter said he favors snail mail when communicating with foreign officials.

“[The justification for surveillance] has been extremely liberalized and, I think, abused by our own intelligence agencies,” Carter told Mitchell. “As a matter of fact, you know, I have felt that my own communications are probably monitored. And when I want to communicate with a foreign leader privately, I type or write the letter myself, put it in the post office, and mail it.”

“Old fashioned snail mail,” Mitchell said.

“Yeah. Because I believe if I send an email it will be monitored,” he said.

I got $20 here says the Carter admin had Menachem Begins and Anwar El Sadats rooms bugged during the Camp David meetings!

He was almost certainly spying on the Iranians and Russians. I doubt the secret CIA assassinations slowed down much during his tenure. It goes with the job.

It isn’t that CNN is still devoting all its air-time to missing flight 370. It’s that they’re still calling it the “zombie plane”.

I wonder what kind of ex-president Obama is going to be. I’m thinking he becomes a rockstar on the speaking circuit and returns to some sort of community activism. I’m hoping he sticks to domestic issues, I think that’s where his interest lies.

This is the part of my day when I start scratching stuff off my “to do” list. “Well, not enough time to get started on this”, “too late to finish that”, “maybe I’ll get around to something later this afternoon”, etc

Speaking of Michael Brown, BTW, this is interesting. He did a radio talk show with—David Sirota (described as a “liberal”).

“In mid-2012 Brown teamed up with Denver liberal KKZN host David Sirota for KHOW’s Sirota-Brown show for KHOW’s afternoon drive slot,[31] but now hosts his own show, again called the Michael Brown Show.[32] Politically, on the program, Brown describes himself as “very clearly center-right, conservative, with a strong libertarian bent.”[33]
