I have a techy type question, or more precisely I have a techy type problemn bon’t I don’t know the question. I have an old XP machine that I wanted to put on my wifi network just to do some basic stuff. (I don’t enable file sharing, just internet access). Any, short story long, the wireless adapter works, it seems to be connected to the internet, as evidenced by the fact that it has downloaded a bunch of updates in the last few times I had it on.
My problem is that when I try to open any browser window, (IE, Chrome, FIrefox) the browser cannot connect to the internet. I figure there are plenty of procedures available online, but I don’t know which question to ask. Am I trying to create a new internet connection, or something else?

PIJ reveals new multiple rocket launcher

he Palestine Islamic Jihad’s (PIJ’s) Al-Quds Brigades’ armed wing has revealed that it has a new multiple rocket launcher that is hidden underground somewhere in the north of the Gaza Strip.

The launcher is protected by metal doors that open to allow it to rise up out of its bunker so it can launch its rockets. It has 12 tubes for short-range 107 mm rockets.

Al-Quds Brigades spokesperson Abu Ahmed claimed the group fired 130 rockets into Israel within 120 minutes following the targeted killing of three of its activists in the Gaza Strip on 11 March. He said the bombardment has shown the weaknesses of Israel’s Iron Dome rocket interception system, which he said brought down just three of the 130 projectiles. This he credited to the Al-Quds Brigades ability to fire an intense rocket barrage with little warning.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that 70 rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel between 12 and 14 March, when an Egyptian-brokered truce came into effect.

The building of fortified artillery positions and those positions firing on civilian targets without warning is not consistent with a desire for peace.

Has this computer been on something like a corporate network, where it was configured to use a proxy server, or VPN connection. That could be causing the problem, if you go to the Internet Options in IE, the Connections Tab, and just clear everything in there, see if that does it.

Second possibility, something in the wireless adapter settings. You can make a quick check to see if it’s finding the outside world. Pull up a command window {Windows Key + “R”} and type in “Ping littlegreenfootballs.com” It should bring back an IP address of 50.22.29.15 If it is, then you’re getting out to the outside world. If not, you can try releasing and renewing the adapter.

In the command window, type
ipconfig /release

and when it comes back to the prompt type
ipconfig /renew

If that doesn’t help, might need more info.

For some time now I’ve been wrestling with how to fight for web hits, why news and contemporary event blogs are losing eyes, etc.

It’s a tough crowd, out there.

The following is the type of website story that can get a quite a few hits:

The Most Fab Or Drab Celebrity Outfits Of The Week

There are three components here:
Buzzfeed
Fashion
Celebrities

Combine those and you get more than 50,000 hits.

Yet important topics on any current event website will get but a tiny fraction of that attention. HuffPo has done well in the past because they got all sorts of people on the train early, so it’s now sort of the go-to site for many. But I wonder if HuffPo is growing anymore or just getting by on momentum.

Concept-centric is quite different than Image-centric, as far as creating a product for people to consume.

“Fashion” is very much about visual appeal, without words. It’s a a form of communication, without an alphabet.

“Celebrity” is a form of philosophy, a statement about being, and ethics, and society. It’s status without politics.

I don’t know what the next big thing is, as far as the web, blogging, etc. I do suspect that writing tomes on social ills will appeal only, ever, to a small crowd. Pictures are good, but unless one is the creator then whatever is seen on one IP can be copied to another IP.

The parallel in music is apparent - create something and it will be copied quickly, and the originator may never get the credit. On occasion I walk by a music classroom where there are always a crowd of young, talented musicians. No matter how good they are, I ask myself if they can ever make a go of it, as far as their music returning to them a living, even if only to make up for all the costs involved.

Finding, and keeping, a market in this age of 24/7 instant access to everything is quite the challenge.

If you look carefully at that WH photo of the Obama girls on the Great Wall, you’ll notice something else never before seen on one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions — ordinary tourists. The Wall is completely empty in that section, except for the First Lady’s entourage.

When the two First Ladies toured the Forbidden City, it was also devoid of any other visitors — a similarly unheard of situation.

I’m not pointing this out as a criticism, because clearing everyone out of these tourist sites makes security that much easier, so don’t dump on me here. I just want to highlight the unusual circumstance of two always-busy tourist attractions (in a nation of 1.3 billion people) being empty. It makes me wonder whether the Chinese government made these arrangements. I’m not sure the WH security detail would even consider making such a request.

It’s a tough crowd, out there.

The following is the type of website story that can get a quite a few hits:

The Most Fab Or Drab Celebrity Outfits Of The Week

There are three components here:
Buzzfeed
Fashion
Celebrities

Combine those and you get more than 50,000 hits.

Yet important topics on any current event website will get but a tiny fraction of that attention. HuffPo has done well in the past because they got all sorts of people on the train early, so it’s now sort of the go-to site for many. But I wonder if HuffPo is growing anymore or just getting by on momentum.

Concept-centric is quite different than Image-centric, as far as creating a product for people to consume.

“Fashion” is very much about visual appeal, without words. It’s a a form of communication, without an alphabet.

“Celebrity” is a form of philosophy, a statement about being, and ethics, and society. It’s status without politics.

I don’t know what the next big thing is, as far as the web, blogging, etc. I do suspect that writing tomes on social ills will appeal only, ever, to a small crowd. Pictures are good, but unless one is the creator then whatever is seen on one IP can be copied to another IP.

The parallel in music is apparent - create something and it will be copied quickly, and the originator may never get the credit. On occasion I walk by a music classroom where there are always a crowd of young, talented musicians. No matter how good they are, I ask myself if they can ever make a go of it, as far as their music returning to them a living, even if only to make up for all the costs involved.

Finding, and keeping, a market in this age of 24/7 instant access to everything is quite the challenge.

Serious music is going to be subsidized—by the Thomaskirke, the Sun King, or the Koch brothers. Our small province in Italy turned out more great young musicians than the world can support. All but the best and luckiest find work at their uncle’s jewelry store.

Continuing on in my curmudgeonly way…

I try to observe people when I’m out and about.

My perception is that there is a non-trivial portion of our population that are still afraid to try our new-fangled gadgets.

I watch at the grocery story, those who select the self-checkout and those who don’t. While often those with really full baskets will pick the full service lines, there are plenty of people with tiny baskets who do likewise.

Now, I realize that some people expect that having someone else pack your bags is normal. But that brings me back to my Japan experience, where I always had to pack my own bags in grocery stores.

Watching people struggle with the self-checkout touch screens reminds me that skills are taught at a young age and unless we make it a point in our adult years to keep learning we will, simply, go the easy route and not challenge ourselves to learn new things.

But we have to learn new things.

Adaptability is a tricky thing, and as I get older I realize that I am not being as pliable as I once was. It takes me longer to learn things. I move less. I meet fewer people. And so on.

Our politicians make much noise about the future, STEM, and the like. Yet I wonder if we’re not already changing faster than we can really handle. That’s why we see the virulent atavism today - a blowback to the ever pressing change.

I wonder if our society ought to introduce a kind of adult training program, say a 12 month program, for anyone who has been out of school for more than 2 decades. Sort of like an expected mid-life return to community college. The idea would be to be trained in something totally new, exposed to concepts and tools that are emerging. Consider it a “13th grade”. I.e., 12th grade is for 18 y.o. folk, 13th grade is for 45 y.o. We need to be able to retool our society continually.

I went to college at the tail end of the slide rule era. By graduate school it was all calculators.
My chemistry prof used to joke he was so fast on his slide rule he had to have one that was water cooled.

This Town Paid Ted Nugent $16,000 To NOT Appear At A Local Event

Rocker Ted Nugent just made big bucks to not show up somewhere.

The town of Longview, Texas paid Nugent $16,000 to not appear at the town’s Fourth of July Festival. According to KLTV, a city spokesman said Nugent was “not the right feel for this kind of community event.”

The city had reached a verbal agreement with Nugent, scheduling the rocker as the headliner who would play inside the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center during the town’s Independence Day celebration. To break that agreement, the town paid Nugent half of his guaranteed performance fee of $32,000 from Maude Cobb’s annual budget.

The move comes amid criticism of comments Nugent made about President Barack Obama in January 2014, calling him a “subhuman mongrel.” Nugent, who campaigned with Texas Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott amid the controversy, apologized for those comments in February.

Abbott said he was moving on from the controversy over Nugent in late February, but his ties to the rocker remain a prominent talking point of both sides of the governor’s race. Abbott’s rival, Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D), called the Attorney General’s embrace of Nugent an “insult,” while former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin (R) cited the rocker in her endorsement of Abbott.

“If he is good enough for Ted Nugent, he is good enough for me!” Palin wrote on her Facebook page.

I know I shouldn’t be too annoyed, but the fact that Ted Nugent makes more money from two or three concerts than most people will make in a year kind of rankles. Nice work if you can get it, I guess.

I think that just keep-on keeping on is the way to go. WE just have to struggle thru, ask for help and try to keep up.

I was a cashier at a drug store for 5 years. I stopped working 2.5 years ago. WE were a national corporate totally modern company, yet when I went to another store and used the self-checkout, I had trouble.

It wasn’t what I was used to.

Just trying to swipe my card at each store is a totally novel experience each time, it seems. The different card readers, software and reward programs are too much for me to memorize. I just stumble thru each time.

Age makes the connections a bit slower.

AND, I finally figured out how to turn on my TV and access netflix.

20+ years ago I worked 2 different jobs with 4 keyboards a 10-key calculator and a regular a typewriter. My pinky NEVER knew if it was hitting a return, a carriage return or enter.

It is what it is.

I’m one of those SOTA’s. I’m 49 and there is another lady who’s 44 and the kids call us mom and dad. And yes, I am the go to guy when students have a beef they need to straighten out with a teacher. When somebody is afraid to interrupt to get the teacher to clarify something I’ll do it for them. Another odd thing is that I seem to have gotten the reputation as some sort of wise elder (I guess for a bunch on 20 year olds, older is relative), and students have confided in me some of the most incredible things.

Man, Getty Images letting us internet folk find and post their pictures willy nilly on the internet (it’s beginning to sink in thanks primarily to LGF) is a really really REALLY cool thing. Can’t sleep. Watching “Inequality for All” on Netflix. Robert Reich explains in his own inimitable way the wealth gap in the country and how it affects the “middle class” in the US and it’s damned depressing.

As workers, we are just totally fucked. As one working woman put it, talking about this gap and having to give up $1/hr in wage cuts at the time, Why do people who make $10 Million, or $1 Billion, have to have more of my wages? It’s not even about what we pay, as ordinary people, in taxes—it’s more about what the rich don’t pay, and what they don’t pay us as well. Many occupations have had their wages cut in half in the last 30, 35 years, wages that could support a family adequately. Today, those same wages must be earned by 2 people to maintain an even lower standard of living without being totally engulfed in debt.

As consumers, we benefit from what’s happening in products being cheaper. But as workers, those same products, on the whole, take more of our lowered paychecks to buy. And that goes for education and other socially necessary functions as well. Globalization and technological advances are giving us more as consumers, but lowered wages are robbing us of the ability to purchase. We are no longer the winners—those days are long gone.

I think it’s gone beyond our own ability to do anything about it, other than overthrowing the current system and that isn’t going to happen because we’re too sick with money in the wrong places. Poor people don’t make revolutions—smart people do, and the smart people are being bought off with money. I no longer think that electoral politics are going to help the average person, no matter who puts himself or herself up for election with the best intentions. I just don’t think they run the country any more. The plutocrats and kleptocrats run it, and that means we no longer live in a real democracy where our voices count. A sick economy such as ours, and increasingly being spread across the globe, makes democracy a meaningless word.

I have a great admiration for Reich, but I think he’s far too optimistic. It’s all very feel-goodish, but reality sucks worse.

There is, perhaps, a bit of a movement in current art that is leaning revolutionary, as a backlash to global corporatism.

I’m thinking of the movie Snowpiercer, a fatalistic if head-on attack about societal structure.

While American TV is the “circuses” part of bread-and-circuses, all the fantasy/escapism won’t last long. I notice that many series are expected to be cancelled. Certainly the desire for escapism will remain and so will so much of our entertainment seek to fulfill that need, but I do believe that the worship of wealth and the drive to be higher in the corporate ladder, as so purely demonstrated by Donald Trump and his Apprentice product, is becoming more and more a bitter pill for Americans.

The question is, what will come next. Without an established religious system to turn to will Americans just dig into despair?

I think that is a ways off. Times are not really bad now. As a society we can, I guess, go through a few more boom and bust cycles, like the 2008 Great Recession. More debt can be had, more bailouts, bigger national deficits and a bigger national debt (the US is nowhere in as bad a shape in this regards as many other nations.)

I’m not really expecting anything too dramatic before about 2040 or 2050 or so.

Our stats are good enough that we can see that the invisible hand is choking us.

The only not-bad point is that the crash won’t cripple the Blue Line, since the major maintenance building for the O’Hare branch is one stop up the line at Rosemont. So the CTA can simply cut out the O’Hare stop and have Rosemont be the end of the line for now.

That was the same problem with the Metro North accident in NYC, I believe. The train had exceeded the maximum speed for the curve.

I will actually defend “History” on Bible Rules, it does a decent job of explaining why the bible has certain rules in it, and why it made sense to the people living in that time and place to have G-d weigh in on a certain subject.

Which consequently shows, indirectly that the bible was written by a bunch of shepherds living in a frickin desert, rather than written by The Man Upstairs.

I don’t think so. He was comparing today’s wealth accumulation with that just before the Great Depression, and talking about those intervening years, where the greatest prosperity and opportunities for the middle class, along with shared wealth and responsibilities, were the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

In fact, the labor rate of participation of the population is the same today as it was in 1978. Even though the unemployment rate is down to around to a little over 7%, there are 90 million people no longer working for various reasons—lack of job opportunities mostly, but also including early retirement, etc. We simply don’t have jobs, or job creation, and his point is that in this new economy, with technological innovation and globalization, those jobs aren’t coming back, and there is nothing to replace them. Just as he pointed out that Amazon, for instance, changed shopping for millions—from brick and mortar to online, thus eliminating many other jobs, other industries are acting similarly. It’s not just industry moving overseas for cheaper labor in mfg, because even in those locations, technology is making it even cheaper, using robotics, for instance, rather than humans. His premise is that both globalization and technology are eliminating jobs which will never see the light of day again. And we’re neither retraining workers or educating them fast enough and the chances for employment are lessening every day. We simply aren’t making enough public policy to care for those folks who can’t find work or can’t afford an education. It’s becoming an employment Catch-22.

If you watch the movie, you can easily see that this is someone who has studied his subject and knows it quite well.

My dependent’s allowance was about $80/mo at the time, in 1959. It was about $50 for each child, per mo. In fact, we had very little stuff for our first, but did manage to buy a crib and a few diapers and bottles ahead of time since I had been working. The Navy nurse came around to “check on us” and gave us the generous sum of $50 to buy some other things, including a plastic baby bath (we were bathing him in the sink and she was appalled by that).

Good Morning from 3 Lizard lair. Got my own little reminder of practical physics yesterday. I was recording a little “casting shop physics” thing I have been working on. Our biz uses various fuel gases and we like to promote hydrogen as a clean and relatively safe gas to mix with oxygen for torch melt.

So I decided the safest way to demo hydrogen as a light gas that will float up and away was to fill a plastic bag with H, tape it floating and ignite is. So after a couple tries we set up the GoPro on 4k mode at 15 frames per second. The bag was losing gas and I moved to refill it with gas from a still warm (not hot) torch. Er, oops.

I got these two spectacular stills.

Riding the chairlift on Saturday there was a beautiful large coyote running across the face run below us. Hopping from mogul to mogul, with his tail straight out and all fluffed up. Couldn’t get my phone out in time to take his picture, but he cut across the mountain gracefully as aduts and children were skiing around him.

This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

We will be holding a press conference tomorrow with further details. In the meantime, we wanted to inform you of this new development at the earliest opportunity. We share this information out of a commitment to openness and respect for the families, two principles which have guided this investigation.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s a whole lot colder here in NYC than it was in Utah this past week, and that’s even counting the altitude differences. There’s snow in the forecast, but not apparently the snow bomb that the forecasters were warning of for NYC metro.

The real news of the morning is that Malaysian Airlines and the Malaysian Government is officially calling the plane and its 239 passengers/crew to have died in the Indian Ocean.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said that was “with sadness and deep regret” that he announced that the Boeing 777’s “last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean west of Perth, [Australia].”

He added: “This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sightings. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that according to this data the flight ended in the southern Indian Ocean.”

The prime minister said that his announcement was based on data analyzed by the U.K. Air Accidents Investigation Branch and satellite firm Inmarsat.

He said they had been “performing further calculations on the data, using a type of analysis, never before used in an investigation of this sort.”

Earlier, the families of passengers aboard the aircraft were sent text messages by the airline telling them that the plane been “lost.”

The cause of the crash still isn’t known, but it looks like the recent satellite intel and plane searches have borne results. Ships are on route to the vicinity, but until they recover the black boxes, CNN will speculate like no other media entity. Ever. At least one ship is expected to be in the vicinity of some of the objects spotted from the air by tomorrow. A US device that searches for black boxes is also on the way. The window to finding the black boxes using their built in locators is closing as the battery is supposed to last 30 days.

CNN has to be the most irresponsible media outlet on this incident. No amount of speculation, no potential conspiracy theory or nonsensical raving was out of bounds. Other outlets were not far behind, but CNN takes the cake for half-baked nonsense filling the airwaves.

In other news, the Egyptian courts sentenced 529 members of the Muslim Brotherhood to death for the murder of a policeman during riots. That makes the Mubarak crackdown against Islamists following the Sadat assassination look like child’s play. It looks like the military isn’t going to let the Brotherhood anywhere near the halls of power again, even if it was lawfully elected to power. That’s not a good sign for democracy in Egypt, and it should be a warning sign for Egyptians that the military remains as it has been, the real power broker in Egyptian politics since the 1950s.

So I interviewed with a company last Wednesday. The manager I spoke with told me they had other screens that still had to be done so it would be a few days before I heard anything. My internet disconnected this morning (in the middle of a Netflix movie). Charter hung up on me when I wanted to talk with a tech specialist. They’re paid little enough to listen to bullshit all day.

Only seen a Golden Eagle once, and they’re big. Sort of like the first time you see a raven or great horned owl at close range.

This was my first non-travel vacation in quite a time. So I didn’t end up doing a lot of driving at the start and end. Lots of walking around and back-ache causing museum time - but it was nice to visit the Art Museum again and I need to see if my no-flash pictures came out. Plus some good cooking since we made a Moroccan-style stew the one night that was real good and spicy. In addition to eating out as well on two nights.

I imagine it must be one hell of a decision to make, trying to decide whether you can take care of a kid when you’re making under $11,000 a year.

It wouldn’t surprise me if some of these women carried the fetus longer than the 21 week mark hoping their financial situation might turn around…and then terminating the pregnancy only when realizing there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

And yet, these same type of idiots argue vehemently against increasing the minimum wage.

Tell me again how Snowden’s concern about US civil rights and NSA violations of American civil rights compelled him and Greenwald to release documents showing how the US spies on Russia or China? No, I think women know their situations aren’t going to change dramatically in 9 mos, so they don’t get abortions that late. They tend to keep their babies, but unfortunately, in areas like this those religious pseudo “pregnancy” centers who want white babies esp spring up all the time. It’s a kind of “surrogate” industry you don’t hear much about because the mother doesn’t get paid for her living expenses or anything else. They’re usually receiving State aid, going it alone at a crappy job, and having their babies through the county clinic.

Democrats have discovered that Silver’s name in an e-mail subject line gets a good response, in terms of opening the e-mail and subsequent donations. So in that context, the more the Democratic Party talks about him, the better its bottom line gets.

Our feeling is that the party’s also using Silver’s name to ramp up the commitment of its rank and file. It’s a way to personalize the assertion that things are in flux and it is time to open wallets and get ready for get-out-the-vote efforts.

The constant Democratic talk about the wealthy Koch brothers and their GOP donations fits right into this. The Kochs are useful bogeymen with which to scare Democratic voters. I could not find an energy expert who believes that Europe could do without Russian gas in the short term.

For instance, Cuba would not allow known “homosexuals” to visit the island under the new Castro regime. In 1954 more than 550 U.S. children under 15 were killed in accidents involving the careless handling of firearms, five of them in lake County, Indiana. Rankin stresses two things: never point as gun at anybody, even in play, and always check immediately to see if the gun is loaded … Rankin is glad to answer routine questions such as “How fast and far does a bullet go?” but tries to discourage ones like “Have you ever shot anyone?” and “If you shoot a man in the head how long does it take him to die?”

Some people think Rankin is starting the kids on firearms too young. But the National Rifle Association points out that four states now permit gun safety courses in grade school and says, “The earlier a kid learns to respect a gun and what not to do with it the better chance natural curiosity won’t get him in trouble.”

In other words, the school instruction was because a police officer at the time thought that would improve gun safety and reduce accidental deaths among kids under 15 due to firearms, which at that time were comparable to current death tolls.

It was primarily concerned with marksmanship and safety training, sponsoring and supervising competitive events, and encouraging the development of products and methods that enhanced these. The fetishizing of guns can’t be a healthy sign for a society. Those obsessed with guns seem to think that the 2nd Amendment is more important than the 1st. Indeed, one of their written-in-stone talking points is that First Amendment freedoms would be impossible without the Second Amendment. Funny how that doesn’t really hold true in western Europe, Japan, Australia, and quite a few other places. But I don’t think you can expect people who salivate over firearms as their American birthright to know (or care) much about the rest of the world.

I was thinking about some of this the other day. You know how it is always said when you take something away more people want it. Commonly this is attached to things that bring about addictions. Ever since the NRA went to driving gun sales with rhetoric about the government is coming to take your guns both the sales of guns and the crazy crap about ‘the man’ taking your guns ramped up. At the same time it also brought out the crazy from the wingnut types who went all political. Opportunity was seen by the conservatives in the Republican party and all the games were on to make guns a political tool.

And with all that the gun games we on.

I don’t know when to date the change, but I am thinking it came sometime in the late 70s/early 80s with Carter as President and then it was used by Reagan. By the time Big Bill Clinton was in office, the games were well and truly on and the lessons the NRA was learning became standard politics.

So…you use the date of 1977 and call it a political coup. Was that within the NRA? I made my recent comment based on thinking back over time. I have an older brother that was always a hunter and gun advocate. He started going gun nutty about that time. Now that I think about it, he was also an NRA member during that era.

Is there any info on what was going on in the NRA and what and who caused the shift?

I think that was right at one time. But when militias became a big thing in the late 80s and into the 90s, I think the wingnuts saw themselves as a militia and future saviors of ‘merica. Therefore they were following the second amendment to the letter. If the only goal is to create as many jobs (mostly low paying) as possible, then she’s right: we shouldn’t raise the minimum wage, we should cut it or get rid of it altogether. But if a concurrent goal is to raise full time workers out of poverty, then there simply has to be some increase in the minimum wage, which is something we’ve been doing for decades without destroying the American economy.

Does anyone with any economic credibility look back at the minimum wage increases of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s and say, “THAT was the moment when we screwed up the US economy.”?

Until the middle 1970s, the NRA had mainly focused on sportsmen, hunters and target shooters, and had downplayed issues of gun control. The 1977 annual convention in Cincinnati would be a defining election for the organization and came to be known as “The Cincinnati Revolution.” At the convention, the leadership had planned an elaborate new headquarters in Colorado, designed to promote sportsmanship and conservation. Within the organization, now existed a group of members whose central concern was Second Amendment rights.
