I have a techy type question, or more precisely I have a techy type problemn bon’t I don’t know the question. I have an old XP machine that I wanted to put on my wifi network just to do some basic stuff. (I don’t enable file sharing, just internet access). Any, short story long, the wireless adapter works, it seems to be connected to the internet, as evidenced by the fact that it has downloaded a bunch of updates in the last few times I had it on.
My problem is that when I try to open any browser window, (IE, Chrome, FIrefox) the browser cannot connect to the internet. I figure there are plenty of procedures available online, but I don’t know which question to ask. Am I trying to create a new internet connection, or something else?

And for those who need some additional illustration into the real situation in Gaza, allow me to present the following:

PIJ reveals new multiple rocket launcher

he Palestine Islamic Jihad’s (PIJ’s) Al-Quds Brigades’ armed wing has revealed that it has a new multiple rocket launcher that is hidden underground somewhere in the north of the Gaza Strip.

The launcher is protected by metal doors that open to allow it to rise up out of its bunker so it can launch its rockets. It has 12 tubes for short-range 107 mm rockets.

Al-Quds Brigades spokesperson Abu Ahmed claimed the group fired 130 rockets into Israel within 120 minutes following the targeted killing of three of its activists in the Gaza Strip on 11 March. He said the bombardment has shown the weaknesses of Israel’s Iron Dome rocket interception system, which he said brought down just three of the 130 projectiles. This he credited to the Al-Quds Brigades ability to fire an intense rocket barrage with little warning.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that 70 rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel between 12 and 14 March, when an Egyptian-brokered truce came into effect.

The building of fortified artillery positions and those positions firing on civilian targets without warning is not consistent with a desire for peace.

Has this computer been on something like a corporate network, where it was configured to use a proxy server, or VPN connection. That could be causing the problem, if you go to the Internet Options in IE, the Connections Tab, and just clear everything in there, see if that does it.

Second possibility, something in the wireless adapter settings. You can make a quick check to see if it’s finding the outside world. Pull up a command window {Windows Key + “R”} and type in “Ping littlegreenfootballs.com” It should bring back an IP address of 50.22.29.15 If it is, then you’re getting out to the outside world. If not, you can try releasing and renewing the adapter.

In the command window, type
ipconfig /release

and when it comes back to the prompt type
ipconfig /renew

If that doesn’t help, might need more info.

Did Paul Ryan really quote Murray?

Paul Ryan, Culture and Poverty

But instead of cushioning his comments, Ryan shot back, “There was nothing whatsoever about race in my comments at all — it had nothing to do with race.”

That would have been more believable if Ryan hadn’t prefaced his original comments by citing Charles Murray, who has essentially argued that blacks are genetically inferior to whites and whom the Southern Poverty Law Center labels a “white nationalist.” (The center’s definition: “White nationalist groups espouse white supremacist or white separatist ideologies, often focusing on the alleged inferiority of nonwhites.”)

Paul Ryan’s conservative agenda on poverty (Clarence Page-Chicago Tribune)

Critics of Ryan’s remarks also cited his favorable reference to Charles Murray, co-author of “The Bell Curve,” a controversial 1994 book about, among other matters, racial differences in intelligence. Like Ryan’s remarks, Murray’s book also says things that sound more sinister about black capabilities than what Murray claims he meant.

Yet Murray has since redeemed himself in my view with his more recent book, “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010.” By focusing only on the socioeconomic changes that white Americans have experienced since the 1950s, the book actually provides support for a long-running liberal argument: The “tailspin of culture” to which Ryan referred — including out-of-wedlock births and “generations of men not even thinking about working” — is crippling poor and blue-collar Americans of all races.

For some time now I’ve been wrestling with how to fight for web hits, why news and contemporary event blogs are losing eyes, etc.

It’s a tough crowd, out there.

The following is the type of website story that can get a quite a few hits:

The Most Fab Or Drab Celebrity Outfits Of The Week

There are three components here:
Buzzfeed
Fashion
Celebrities

Combine those and you get more than 50,000 hits.

Yet important topics on any current event website will get but a tiny fraction of that attention. HuffPo has done well in the past because they got all sorts of people on the train early, so it’s now sort of the go-to site for many. But I wonder if HuffPo is growing anymore or just getting by on momentum.

Concept-centric is quite different than Image-centric, as far as creating a product for people to consume.

“Fashion” is very much about visual appeal, without words. It’s a a form of communication, without an alphabet.

“Celebrity” is a form of philosophy, a statement about being, and ethics, and society. It’s status without politics.

I don’t know what the next big thing is, as far as the web, blogging, etc. I do suspect that writing tomes on social ills will appeal only, ever, to a small crowd. Pictures are good, but unless one is the creator then whatever is seen on one IP can be copied to another IP.

The parallel in music is apparent - create something and it will be copied quickly, and the originator may never get the credit. On occasion I walk by a music classroom where there are always a crowd of young, talented musicians. No matter how good they are, I ask myself if they can ever make a go of it, as far as their music returning to them a living, even if only to make up for all the costs involved.

Finding, and keeping, a market in this age of 24/7 instant access to everything is quite the challenge.

115 wheat-dogghazi  Sun, Mar 23, 2014 7:26:30pm

If you look carefully at that WH photo of the Obama girls on the Great Wall, you’ll notice something else never before seen on one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions — ordinary tourists. The Wall is completely empty in that section, except for the First Lady’s entourage.

When the two First Ladies toured the Forbidden City, it was also devoid of any other visitors — a similarly unheard of situation.

I’m not pointing this out as a criticism, because clearing everyone out of these tourist sites makes security that much easier, so don’t dump on me here. I just want to highlight the unusual circumstance of two always-busy tourist attractions (in a nation of 1.3 billion people) being empty. It makes me wonder whether the Chinese government made these arrangements. I’m not sure the WH security detail would even consider making such a request.

re: #114 freetoken

Serious music is going to be subsidized—by the Thomaskirke, the Sun King, or the Koch brothers. Our small province in Italy turned out more great young musicians than the world can support. All but the best and luckiest find work at their uncle’s jewelry store.

Continuing on in my curmudgeonly way…

I try to observe people when I’m out and about.

My perception is that there is a non-trivial portion of our population that are still afraid to try our new-fangled gadgets.

I watch at the grocery story, those who select the self-checkout and those who don’t. While often those with really full baskets will pick the full service lines, there are plenty of people with tiny baskets who do likewise.

Now, I realize that some people expect that having someone else pack your bags is normal. But that brings me back to my Japan experience, where I always had to pack my own bags in grocery stores.

Watching people struggle with the self-checkout touch screens reminds me that skills are taught at a young age and unless we make it a point in our adult years to keep learning we will, simply, go the easy route and not challenge ourselves to learn new things.

But we have to learn new things.

Adaptability is a tricky thing, and as I get older I realize that I am not being as pliable as I once was. It takes me longer to learn things. I move less. I meet fewer people. And so on.

Our politicians make much noise about the future, STEM, and the like. Yet I wonder if we’re not already changing faster than we can really handle. That’s why we see the virulent atavism today - a blowback to the ever pressing change.

I wonder if our society ought to introduce a kind of adult training program, say a 12 month program, for anyone who has been out of school for more than 2 decades. Sort of like an expected mid-life return to community college. The idea would be to be trained in something totally new, exposed to concepts and tools that are emerging. Consider it a “13th grade”. I.e., 12th grade is for 18 y.o. folk, 13th grade is for 45 y.o. We need to be able to retool our society continually.

This Town Paid Ted Nugent $16,000 To NOT Appear At A Local Event

Rocker Ted Nugent just made big bucks to not show up somewhere.

The town of Longview, Texas paid Nugent $16,000 to not appear at the town’s Fourth of July Festival. According to KLTV, a city spokesman said Nugent was “not the right feel for this kind of community event.”

The city had reached a verbal agreement with Nugent, scheduling the rocker as the headliner who would play inside the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center during the town’s Independence Day celebration. To break that agreement, the town paid Nugent half of his guaranteed performance fee of $32,000 from Maude Cobb’s annual budget.

The move comes amid criticism of comments Nugent made about President Barack Obama in January 2014, calling him a “subhuman mongrel.” Nugent, who campaigned with Texas Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Greg Abbott amid the controversy, apologized for those comments in February.

Abbott said he was moving on from the controversy over Nugent in late February, but his ties to the rocker remain a prominent talking point of both sides of the governor’s race. Abbott’s rival, Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D), called the Attorney General’s embrace of Nugent an “insult,” while former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin (R) cited the rocker in her endorsement of Abbott.

“If he is good enough for Ted Nugent, he is good enough for me!” Palin wrote on her Facebook page.

I know I shouldn’t be too annoyed, but the fact that Ted Nugent makes more money from two or three concerts than most people will make in a year kind of rankles. Nice work if you can get it, I guess.

I think that just keep-on keeping on is the way to go. WE just have to struggle thru, ask for help and try to keep up.

I was a cashier at a drug store for 5 years. I stopped working 2.5 years ago. WE were a national corporate totally modern company, yet when I went to another store and used the self-checkout, I had trouble.

It wasn’t what I was used to.

Just trying to swipe my card at each store is a totally novel experience each time, it seems. The different card readers, software and reward programs are too much for me to memorize. I just stumble thru each time.

Age makes the connections a bit slower.

AND, I finally figured out how to turn on my TV and access netflix.

20+ years ago I worked 2 different jobs with 4 keyboards a 10-key calculator and a regular a typewriter. My pinky NEVER knew if it was hitting a return, a carriage return or enter.

It is what it is.

We’ll learn more in time if it was an actual shoot-down. General Dynamics (the defense giant that manufactures the F-16) will examine the incident in great detail to learn how well the F-16 performed, as will Raytheon, which produced the AMRAAM used to destroy the MiG. AMRAAM hasn’t seen a combat use since 1999, so this action is going to be closely studied. If it was a hoax, that fact will come out quickly.

On Monday, the fast-growing media website BuzzFeed will announce that it has joined forces with Mr. Zimmerman, who left Gawker in January to become editor in chief of Whisper, a new app that allows people to share secrets and make confessions anonymously. The partnership will give BuzzFeed access to Whisper and to its content for possible articles.

The alliance, in which no money will change hands, is expected to send ripples through digital media. Mr. Zimmerman said that in his last months at Gawker, he was its primary driver of traffic, bringing in roughly three-quarters of monthly unique visitors. gawker.com had 24 million unique visitors last month, according to Quantcast, a internet traffic monitoring site. Gawker’s founder, Nick Denton, recently picked a fight with BuzzFeed, calling the site “pointless” but describing it as “the perfect competitor — highly motivating.”

I notice that American (including perhaps Canadian) TV is really over-dosing on magic, superstition, and religious programs these days.

The latest are Resurrection, Believe, and of course the “History” channel’s The Bible Rules.

The History channel clearly has targeted the remnant theistic/magickal thinking demographic, but all the other networks have their own magickal kick of one sort or another.

What does that say about our society, that we already didn’t know?

I don’t know.

Can’t sleep. Watching “Inequality for All” on Netflix. Robert Reich explains in his own inimitable way the wealth gap in the country and how it affects the “middle class” in the US and it’s damned depressing.

As workers, we are just totally fucked. As one working woman put it, talking about this gap and having to give up $1/hr in wage cuts at the time, Why do people who make $10 Million, or $1 Billion, have to have more of my wages? It’s not even about what we pay, as ordinary people, in taxes—it’s more about what the rich don’t pay, and what they don’t pay us as well. Many occupations have had their wages cut in half in the last 30, 35 years, wages that could support a family adequately. Today, those same wages must be earned by 2 people to maintain an even lower standard of living without being totally engulfed in debt.

As consumers, we benefit from what’s happening in products being cheaper. But as workers, those same products, on the whole, take more of our lowered paychecks to buy. And that goes for education and other socially necessary functions as well. Globalization and technological advances are giving us more as consumers, but lowered wages are robbing us of the ability to purchase. We are no longer the winners—those days are long gone.

I think it’s gone beyond our own ability to do anything about it, other than overthrowing the current system and that isn’t going to happen because we’re too sick with money in the wrong places. Poor people don’t make revolutions—smart people do, and the smart people are being bought off with money. I no longer think that electoral politics are going to help the average person, no matter who puts himself or herself up for election with the best intentions. I just don’t think they run the country any more. The plutocrats and kleptocrats run it, and that means we no longer live in a real democracy where our voices count. A sick economy such as ours, and increasingly being spread across the globe, makes democracy a meaningless word.

I have a great admiration for Reich, but I think he’s far too optimistic. It’s all very feel-goodish, but reality sucks worse.

Billionaire Sought by U.S. Holds Key to Putin Gas Cash

bloomberg.com

“A detained billionaire who made a fortune as a middleman in Russia’s murky gas trade with Ukraine may hold the key for U.S. lawmakers seeking harsher sanctions against President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

“Ukrainian Dmitry Firtash, arrested in Vienna this month on an American warrant for bribery and other charges, may hand over a treasure trove of information about deals involving Russian state gas exporter OAO Gazprom that the U.S. would consider corrupt, said Mikhail Korchemkin, a former analyst for the Soviet Union’s Gas Ministry in Moscow and founder of Malvern, Pennsylvania-based East European Gas Analysis.

“After Putin seized Ukraine’s southern Crimea region, a U.S. Senate panel approved a bill on emergency funding for the country that would widen the scope of sanctions to include any Russian involved in “significant” corruption.” More

I find Reich to be, somehow at the same time, a bit hyperbolic and shallow.

At least in some of his generalizations.

Let’s look at this contextually: Until the Emancipation Proclamation a sizable chunk of the population were not even considered equal as people, and it took another 100 years until 1965 for the Constitution and laws to enforce the real meaning of the proclamation.

Women didn’t vote nationally until 1920.

I think it is too easy to paint the past as some kind of utopia. And, I think Reich is falling into that trap.

226 freetoken  Mon, Mar 24, 2014 3:07:01am

There is, perhaps, a bit of a movement in current art that is leaning revolutionary, as a backlash to global corporatism.

I’m thinking of the movie Snowpiercer, a fatalistic if head-on attack about societal structure.

While American TV is the “circuses” part of bread-and-circuses, all the fantasy/escapism won’t last long. I notice that many series are expected to be cancelled. Certainly the desire for escapism will remain and so will so much of our entertainment seek to fulfill that need, but I do believe that the worship of wealth and the drive to be higher in the corporate ladder, as so purely demonstrated by Donald Trump and his Apprentice product, is becoming more and more a bitter pill for Americans.

The question is, what will come next. Without an established religious system to turn to will Americans just dig into despair?

I think that is a ways off. Times are not really bad now. As a society we can, I guess, go through a few more boom and bust cycles, like the 2008 Great Recession. More debt can be had, more bailouts, bigger national deficits and a bigger national debt (the US is nowhere in as bad a shape in this regards as many other nations.)

I’m not really expecting anything too dramatic before about 2040 or 2050 or so.

But now we have the numbers from Utopia, and we’re measurably sliding away from emancipation from poverty. Every indication, like Bill Gates’ recent statement, is that paid work is going to become a rare valuable. We can either share the work equitably throughout the population or jack up the hours of the ‘lucky’ few and call the others parasites. Our stats are good enough that we can see that the invisible hand is choking us.

Oh my God. I’ve been in that station many times, so I can tell you with certainty that train must have been going far too fast to have crashed like that. The damage is going to take months to repair. I hope no one was killed. Edit: 32 injured, but none in critical condition and no one dead. Thank God.

The only not-bad point is that the crash won’t cripple the Blue Line, since the major maintenance building for the O’Hare branch is one stop up the line at Rosemont. So the CTA can simply cut out the O’Hare stop and have Rosemont be the end of the line for now.

I agree that we are economically in a strange place.

I don’t think models from the past or, really, anyone’s imagination are going to apply.

In this Brave New World, chaos seems to rule. What we need, IMHO, is the ability to check those trying to seize unlimited power out of the chaos.

Perhaps, also, we need to move away from the classical definitinon of Chaos:

Chaos, especially in biblical usage, a chasm or abyss

I will actually defend “History” on Bible Rules, it does a decent job of explaining why the bible has certain rules in it, and why it made sense to the people living in that time and place to have G-d weigh in on a certain subject.

Which consequently shows, indirectly that the bible was written by a bunch of shepherds living in a frickin desert, rather than written by The Man Upstairs.

EDIT: Now, “Hangar 1” on the other hand…its like Ancient Aliens, but without the rigorous scientific approach…but its still better than Unsealed: The Alien Files.

Women didn’t vote nationally until 1920.

I think it is too easy to paint the past as some kind of utopia. And, I think Reich is falling into that trap.

I don’t think so. He was comparing today’s wealth accumulation with that just before the Great Depression, and talking about those intervening years, where the greatest prosperity and opportunities for the middle class, along with shared wealth and responsibilities, were the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

In fact, the labor rate of participation of the population is the same today as it was in 1978. Even though the unemployment rate is down to around to a little over 7%, there are 90 million people no longer working for various reasons—lack of job opportunities mostly, but also including early retirement, etc. We simply don’t have jobs, or job creation, and his point is that in this new economy, with technological innovation and globalization, those jobs aren’t coming back, and there is nothing to replace them. Just as he pointed out that Amazon, for instance, changed shopping for millions—from brick and mortar to online, thus eliminating many other jobs, other industries are acting similarly. It’s not just industry moving overseas for cheaper labor in mfg, because even in those locations, technology is making it even cheaper, using robotics, for instance, rather than humans. His premise is that both globalization and technology are eliminating jobs which will never see the light of day again. And we’re neither retraining workers or educating them fast enough and the chances for employment are lessening every day. We simply aren’t making enough public policy to care for those folks who can’t find work or can’t afford an education. It’s becoming an employment Catch-22.

If you watch the movie, you can easily see that this is someone who has studied his subject and knows it quite well.

Well, they should get it, but I also wish we had some type of real maternity leave for mothers in the US.

After all, not everyone can fake a pregnancy like someone we know and show up for work 2 days later, keeping whoever’s baby with her.

When I had my first son, I had to quit my job when they found out I was pregnant, and then couldn’t have returned quickly anyway, since it took me 2 weeks to be able to sit up for any length of time. Incredible, wasn’t it? We were “allowed” to work 3 mos, but I hid it for a while and lied because being enlisted personnel family, we needed the extra dough. My dependent’s allowance was about $80/mo at the time, in 1959. It was about $50 for each child, per mo. In fact, we had very little stuff for our first, but did manage to buy a crib and a few diapers and bottles ahead of time since I had been working. The Navy nurse came around to “check on us” and gave us the generous sum of $50 to buy some other things, including a plastic baby bath (we were bathing him in the sink and she was appalled by that).

Good Morning from 3 Lizard lair. Got my own little reminder of practical physics yesterday. I was recording a little “casting shop physics” thing I have been working on. Our biz uses various fuel gases and we like to promote hydrogen as a clean and relatively safe gas to mix with oxygen for torch melt.

So I decided the safest way to demo hydrogen as a light gas that will float up and away was to fill a plastic bag with H, tape it floating and ignite is. So after a couple tries we set up the GoPro on 4k mode at 15 frames per second. The bag was losing gas and I moved to refill it with gas from a still warm (not hot) torch. Er, oops.

I got these two spectacular stills.

Poof!

Ouch

So, my left hand no longer has any hair on it. But no burns.

14.09 Here is the full statement from Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on investigators’ conclusion that MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean and that no one on board survived:
PM NAJIB RAZAK’S PRESS STATEMENT ON MH370

This evening I was briefed by representatives from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). They informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data.

Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path.

Based on their new analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB have concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth.

This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

We will be holding a press conference tomorrow with further details. In the meantime, we wanted to inform you of this new development at the earliest opportunity. We share this information out of a commitment to openness and respect for the families, two principles which have guided this investigation.

Malaysia Airlines have already spoken to the families of the passengers and crew to inform them of this development. For them, the past few weeks have been heartbreaking; I know this news must be harder still. I urge the media to respect their privacy, and to allow them the space they need at this difficult time.

14.07 Relatives at the Lido Hotel in Beijing are currently being briefed by authorities. A team of police has just entered the building and an ambulance is parked outside the doors, our correspondent Malcolm Moore in Beijing reports.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s a whole lot colder here in NYC than it was in Utah this past week, and that’s even counting the altitude differences. There’s snow in the forecast, but not apparently the snow bomb that the forecasters were warning of for NYC metro.

The real news of the morning is that Malaysian Airlines and the Malaysian Government is officially calling the plane and its 239 passengers/crew to have died in the Indian Ocean.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said that was “with sadness and deep regret” that he announced that the Boeing 777’s “last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean west of Perth, [Australia].”

He added: “This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sightings. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that according to this data the flight ended in the southern Indian Ocean.”

The prime minister said that his announcement was based on data analyzed by the U.K. Air Accidents Investigation Branch and satellite firm Inmarsat.

He said they had been “performing further calculations on the data, using a type of analysis, never before used in an investigation of this sort.”

Earlier, the families of passengers aboard the aircraft were sent text messages by the airline telling them that the plane been “lost.”

The cause of the crash still isn’t known, but it looks like the recent satellite intel and plane searches have borne results. Ships are on route to the vicinity, but until they recover the black boxes, CNN will speculate like no other media entity. Ever. At least one ship is expected to be in the vicinity of some of the objects spotted from the air by tomorrow. A US device that searches for black boxes is also on the way. The window to finding the black boxes using their built in locators is closing as the battery is supposed to last 30 days.

CNN has to be the most irresponsible media outlet on this incident. No amount of speculation, no potential conspiracy theory or nonsensical raving was out of bounds. Other outlets were not far behind, but CNN takes the cake for half-baked nonsense filling the airwaves.

In other news, the Egyptian courts sentenced 529 members of the Muslim Brotherhood to death for the murder of a policeman during riots. That makes the Mubarak crackdown against Islamists following the Sadat assassination look like child’s play. It looks like the military isn’t going to let the Brotherhood anywhere near the halls of power again, even if it was lawfully elected to power. That’s not a good sign for democracy in Egypt, and it should be a warning sign for Egyptians that the military remains as it has been, the real power broker in Egyptian politics since the 1950s.

Residents in Alaska, Gaza Strip Want to Join Russia

Russia’s annexation of Crimea following a referendum has prompted calls from such distant places as Alaska and the Gaza Strip to hold votes on their own absorption by Russia.

A petition calling for Alaska to secede from the U.S. and join Russia gathered more than 12,000 signatures on the White House website by early Monday morning, just a few days after it was posted by an unidentified local resident.

Entitled “Alaska back to Russia,” the petition cites the travels of 18th-century Russian explorers to Alaska, which was a Russian colony until the U.S. bought it in 1867 for a mere $7.2 million, or $120 million adjusted for inflation. The petition must attract 100,000 signatures by April 20 to be reviewed by President Barack Obama’s administration.

In the Middle East, the Russian-language version of a Palestinian website run by Hamas said that Russian speakers in the Gaza Strip planned to hold a referendum on their territory join Russia, though no confirmation by Hamas leaders of any such plans were reported.

Getting into this a little late… and I never heard this one, but I wanted to recommend MacBird, one of the best sendups I’ve ever run across. It was actually about lunatic conspiracy theories, not an illustration of someone’s theory.

Highlight of the morning so far was watching a peregrine falcon cruise by at office window level (~30 stories up).

So I interviewed with a company last Wednesday. The manager I spoke with told me they had other screens that still had to be done so it would be a few days before I heard anything. With luck, there will be good news. SRV knows I need it since my UI benefits are gone, the greedy assholes in the GOP refuse to pass an extension, and money is getting ridiculously tight. I’m trying my best to stay positive.

While I wait, I’ve kept looking at and applying to other companies just so I know that I’m doing everything possible. I have truly come to loathe the automated application process. Give me a direct line in to talk to someone any day. It’s absolutely ludicrous that you can apply to a company on a Saturday afternoon and receive a rejection from that same company at 9am on Monday, as if anyone there even bothered to read anything they were sent. Bitch plz.

Not only do I hate that process, I hate computer generated “guides” when you call for service or assistance.

My internet disconnected this morning (in the middle of a Netflix movie). Charter hung up on me when I wanted to talk with a tech specialist. It came back on shortly after, though, or they would have been getting an earful. I don’t hold back, but I let the phone people know it’s not them, it’s the company I despise. They’re paid little enough to listen to bullshit all day.

Nate Silver’s analysis of the upcoming 2014 Senate races gives the GOP a slight edge, and potentially picking up enough seats to retake the Senate. Only just at that.

And let’s note what’s going on here. Nearly all the incumbents are going to win reelection in Silver’s analysis. It’s the open seats that were formerly in D hands that look like they may go over to the GOP. In other words, it’s the typical kind of election, not a sea change, but it increases pressure on the Democrats to hold what they have, and for the GOP to continue their anti-ACA nonsense, only to have to pivot to something else if they return to power (because they’ve spent the last 5 years talking nothing but deny, delay, destroy Obamacare).

Abortions aren’t something that any woman is going to do for the fun of it. It’s an extremely emotional issue that isn’t taken lightly by anyone involved. Exactly. There are any number of complicating circumstances.

According to the research conducted by Guttmacher, 42% of the women obtaining abortions had incomes under 100% of the poverty level.

I imagine it must be one hell of a decision to make, trying to decide whether you can take care of a kid when you’re making under $11,000 a year.

It wouldn’t surprise me if some of these women carried the fetus longer than the 21 week mark hoping their financial situation might turn around…and then terminating the pregnancy only when realizing there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

Tell me again how Snowden’s concern about US civil rights and NSA violations of American civil rights compelled him and Greenwald to release documents showing how the US spies on Russia or China? What does the former have to do with the latter unless that was never their concern in the first place.

And as I’ve repeatedly stated, Snowden didn’t care about civil rights, or else he wouldn’t be in Russia right now. His primary concern has always been undermining US national security, which happens to be the same thing Greenwald has been focused on. Ignore all the civil and human rights violations of the countries they are currently residing in, and taking pot shots at the US all while US national security means are undermined by Snowden documents, or forcing changes on US national security oversight by exaggerating claims or supposition that violations could occur.

Snowden engaged in espionage, and the damage done to US national security mounts by the day as more and more revelations about US spycraft and means/measures come to light courtesy of those documents he took that had nothing to do with civil rights violations and were wholly legal under US law and mandated by Congress and the President to provide them with data needed to deal with foreign and national affairs.

No, I think women know their situations aren’t going to change dramatically in 9 mos, so they don’t get abortions that late. They tend to keep their babies, but unfortunately, in areas like this those religious pseudo “pregnancy” centers who want white babies esp spring up all the time. It’s a kind of “surrogate” industry you don’t hear much about because the mother doesn’t get paid for her living expenses or anything else. They’re usually receiving State aid, going it alone at a crappy job, and having their babies through the county clinic.

Birthers got a beat down in Alabama.

Except they think they won.

Attorney Klayman Responds: Alabama Case
Will Likely Be Taken To U.S. Supreme Court

Attorney Larry Klayman writes @ WND:

Excerpt: Last Friday, one of the few great judges in this land, Chief Justice Roy Moore of the Alabama Supreme Court - the jurist who was first impeached for displaying the Ten Commandments in his courtroom and then overwhelmingly elected by the people of the state to be their chief justice - had the courage to write a compelling dissenting opinion validating our challenge to Obama’s eligibility to be president. :^o While seven of his nine fellow justices took the easy way out perhaps to show that Alabama is no longer the state once governed by George Wallace and rejected my ballot challenge, Chief Justice Moore without political correctness and without the disingenuous and cowardly sensitivity to Obama’s race, told it like it is. Heruled that Alabama did have a legal duty to verify that candidates for the presidency are eligible to serve as natural born citizens if elected (see decision at FreedomWatch), Moore concluded

[…]

This well-written and thoughtful opinion by Chief Justice Moore will hopefully give courage to other judges to tell it like it is. Indeed, I have appeals pending in Florida, and the majority decision of the Alabama justices will likely be taken to the U.S. Supreme Court under a petition for writ of certiorari. ](*,)

We cannot quit. The imposter in the White House must be held accountable, andhe should indeed be told to get up off his knees and come out with his hands up.

Few other judges in this nation have the courage of Chief Justice Moore. The Honorable Royce C. Lamberth, who held the Clintons to account in the late ’90s and early 2000s and ruled that Bill Clinton had committed a crime, and Richard J. Leon, who just ruled against the National Security Agency’s “almost Orwellian” surveillance on all Americans, are among the most endangered of species. But if they and more judges like them come forward to represent the interests of the American people, rather than the corrupt legal and government establishment, then there is hope. […] - Continued @ WND.

Democrats slam Nate Silver. Why the pushback against polling whiz?

… as our colleague Mark Sappenfield wrote over the weekend, it’s possible they’re also using Silver’s prediction for fundraising efforts. Democrats have discovered that Silver’s name in an e-mail subject line gets a good response, in terms of opening the e-mail and subsequent donations. So in that context, the more the Democratic Party talks about him, the better its bottom line gets.

Our feeling is that the party’s also using Silver’s name to ramp up the commitment of its rank and file. It’s a way to personalize the assertion that things are in flux and it is time to open wallets and get ready for get-out-the-vote efforts.

The constant Democratic talk about the wealthy Koch brothers and their GOP donations fits right into this. The Kochs are useful bogeymen with which to scare Democratic voters. And Democrats need to be motivated, in a way: It’s turnout that wins elections, and Republicans traditionally have better turnout in midterms.

Vladimir Putin says he doesn’t “need” eastern Ukraine, but it just might make sense for him to take it anyway.

If anything, the prospect of long-term economic decline may prompt him to seize eastern Ukraine’s economic assets right now — while he has an opening. He might hesitate if the cost were crippling Gazprom, the most formidable weapon he has. But Putin knows that Europe can’t afford to stop buying Russian gas for the next several years. If the cost for eastern Ukraine is burning his bridges to the West and having his own and all his cronies’ assets frozen, Putin just may consider that a price worth paying.

I could not find an energy expert who believes that Europe could do without Russian gas in the short term.

In short, the only force that can keep Russian troops from drinking vodka in Donetsk is Vladimir Putin himself. Putin has so many lower-cost options available to him that a large-scale invasion — even one limited to border areas — still seems unlikely. Putin may calculate that he can destabilize Ukraine, and thus turn its dalliance with the West into a failure, by using Russia’s immense economic power to squeeze Ukraine, by blanketing the east with propaganda from Russian media and by sending agents provocateurs to whip up popular discontent. Putin doesn’t “need,” as he put it, to divide Ukraine by force; he just needs to keep it out of the Western orbit.

For instance, Cuba would not allow known “homosexuals” to visit the island under the new Castro regime. The revolutionaries saw it as decadence of the wealthy, just as they did the gambling casinos, sex shows and other activities generated by mobsters who were getting rich from it, and who Batista allowed to operate with impunity.

And Putin has perplexed not only Obama, but Bush (who looked into his eyes, and didn’t have any better answers when Putin’s Russia invaded Georgia and South Ossetia), and Clinton. Putin’s autocratic nature perplexes also the Europeans, who have to be even more circumspect on their actions since they’re more closely bound to the Russians due to economics and proximity.

The rest of the story:

In 1954 more than 550 U.S. children under 15 were killed in accidents involving the careless handling of firearms, five of them in lake County, Indiana. [In 2010, 606 people were killed by “accidental discharge of firearms,” according to the CDC. — Ed.] This situation shocked Indiana Conservation Officer Rod Rankin, who decided to offer a course in gun safety to any interested child in the county. In the past year 2,500 children from 6 years on, with the approval of their parents, have taken him up on it.

Rankin stresses two things: never point as gun at anybody, even in play, and always check immediately to see if the gun is loaded … Rankin is glad to answer routine questions such as “How fast and far does a bullet go?” but tries to discourage ones like “Have you ever shot anyone?” and “If you shoot a man in the head how long does it take him to die?”

Some people think Rankin is starting the kids on firearms too young. But the National Rifle Association points out that four states now permit gun safety courses in grade school and says, “The earlier a kid learns to respect a gun and what not to do with it the better chance natural curiosity won’t get him in trouble.”

In other words, the school instruction was because a police officer at the time thought that would improve gun safety and reduce accidental deaths among kids under 15 due to firearms, which at that time were comparable to current death tolls.

So, what does CA A.G. candidate have to say about Flight MH 370 today?

Glad you asked.

Additional new evidence pointing to hijacking: shortly before take off the pilot received a call from a person, who purchased the SIM card shortly before using a fabricated identity. NSA needs to start talking and needs to provide us the information in their posession. Did the same entity that created her identity, created all of Obama’s bogus IDs?

A good snapshot of the “old” NRA, before the political coup of 1977. It was primarily concerned with marksmanship and safety training, sponsoring and supervising competitive events, and encouraging the development of products and methods that enhanced these. Today’s NRA would not even acknowledge that a kid could get into trouble with a gun.

The fetishizing of guns can’t be a healthy sign for a society. Those obsessed with guns seem to think that the 2nd Amendment is more important than the 1st. Indeed, one of their written-in-stone talking points is that First Amendment freedoms would be impossible without the Second Amendment. Funny how that doesn’t really hold true in western Europe, Japan, Australia, and quite a few other places. But I don’t think you can expect people who salivate over firearms as their American birthright to know (or care) much about the rest of the world.

1. The Great Depression: Made Up to Spread Socialism

In a section titled “More Rumors,” America: Land I Love In Christian Perspective takes on the origins of the Great Depression. The book explains that,

“Some people wanted to create an imaginary crisis in order to move the country toward socialism. They spread rumors of bank mortgage foreclosures and mass evictions from farms, homes and apartments. But local banks did all in their power to keep their present tenants. The number of people out of work in the 1930s averaged about 15 percent of the work force; thus 85 percent continued to work. Most had to take a pay cut, but prices also declined during the Depression, enabling people to buy more for their money.”

See! The Great Depression was really a great hoax!

Yep…good comment.

I was thinking about some of this the other day. You know how it is always said when you take something away more people want it. Commonly this is attached to things that bring about addictions. Ever since the NRA went to driving gun sales with rhetoric about the government is coming to take your guns both the sales of guns and the crazy crap about ‘the man’ taking your guns ramped up. At the same time it also brought out the crazy from the wingnut types who went all political. Opportunity was seen by the conservatives in the Republican party and all the games were on to make guns a political tool.

And with all that the gun games we on.

I don’t know when to date the change, but I am thinking it came sometime in the late 70s/early 80s with Carter as President and then it was used by Reagan. By the time Big Bill Clinton was in office, the games were well and truly on and the lessons the NRA was learning became standard politics.

I think that was right at one time. But when militias became a big thing in the late 80s and into the 90s, I think the wingnuts saw themselves as a militia and future saviors of ‘merica. Even if they were not in a militia, they liked the idea of them and probably figured if they were armed to the teeth, they could always throw in with a local group when needed. Therefore they were following the second amendment to the letter. Good little citizens you know, ready to protect the flag, apple pie and the girl that left them behind…once she figured out she was living with a nut with guns.

If the only goal is to create as many jobs (mostly low paying) as possible, then she’s right: we shouldn’t raise the minimum wage, we should cut it or get rid of it altogether. But if a concurrent goal is to raise full time workers out of poverty, then there simply has to be some increase in the minimum wage, which is something we’ve been doing for decades without destroying the American economy.

Does anyone with any economic credibility look back at the minimum wage increases of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s and say, “THAT was the moment when we screwed up the US economy.”?

A couple of old stories:

cnn.com

The elder Snowden, who arrived October 10 in Moscow, said the two visited several times. “He is comfortable, he is independent, he is happy — which is important to me — and he is absolutely committed to the decision that he made.”

Lon Snowden said his son told him he had had no contact with Russian security or intelligence.

foxnews.com

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has denied speculation that US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden was interrogated by Russian authorities, telling Australian media they had “behaved well”.

Assange, who is standing for election in Australia’s upcoming national polls, said WikiLeaks personnel had been with Snowden since he left Hong Kong and arrived in Sheremetyevo airport’s transit zone on June 23.

“Since Hong Kong we have had someone physically by his side the entire time,” he said in an interview with Australia’s Fairfax Media published online on Friday.

“We have had someone with him for 54 days.”

Asked whether Snowden had been interviewed by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) or any other Russian intelligence agency, Assange said, “No, he has not.”

From Snowden’s recent EU parliament written testimony:

http://www.europarl.europa.eu/…/20140307ATT80674EN.pdf

Did the Russian secret service approach you?

Of course. Even the secret service of Andorra would have approached me, if they had had the chance: that’s their job.

But I didn’t take any documents with me from Hong Kong, and while I’m sure they were disappointed, it doesn’t take long for an intelligence service to realize when they’re out of luck. I was also accompanied at all times by an utterly fearless journalist with one of the biggest megaphones in the world, which is the equivalent of Kryptonite for spies. As a consequence, we spent the next 40 days trapped in an airport instead of sleeping on piles of money while waiting for the next parade. But we walked out with heads held high.

I would also add, for the record, that the United States government has repeatedly acknowledged that there is no evidence at all of any relationship between myself and the Russian intelligence service.

Is there any info on what was going on in the NRA and what and who caused the shift?

NRA-Lobbying at wikipedia

Until the middle 1970s, the NRA had mainly focused on sportsmen, hunters and target shooters, and had downplayed issues of gun control. The 1977 annual convention in Cincinnati would be a defining election for the organization and came to be known as “The Cincinnati Revolution.” At the convention, the leadership had planned an elaborate new headquarters in Colorado, designed to promote sportsmanship and conservation. Within the organization, now existed a group of members whose central concern was Second Amendment rights. Those activists defeated the incumbents in 1977 and elected Harlon Carter as executive director and Neal Knox as head of the ILA.

After 1977, the organization expanded its membership by focusing heavily on political issues and forming coalitions with conservative politicians, most of them Republicans. (emphasis added)

Perhaps not coincidentally, the notorious Wayne LaPierre (NRA executive vice-president since 1991) has worked for the organization since 1977.
