Irony, thy name is Greenwald.

He keeps thinking that he’s the smartest guy in the room. Except his story keeps falling apart under close scrutiny.

If his and Snowden’s mission was truly about US civil rights and NSA violations of same, why release all the data and reporting on means and methods that has nothing to do with any violation of US law?

If his mission was about undermining US national security, he’s succeeded, because that’s the primary outcome of the ongoing series of reports.

First up is in SC, where a biology professor tells the legislators the truth in response to fundamentalist legislators pulling natural selection from curriculae:

Evolution should be part of core S.C. science standards, Charleston professor says

A biology professor told an education panel on Monday that members of his organization are frustrated with seeing the state’s biology standards become a “political football for religious reasons or political reasons.”

Rob Dillon, a College of Charleston professor and president of South Carolinians for Science Education, said members of the organization are “so discouraged” to see the standards of biology that speak of natural selection be pulled out and made a special case out of the other 111 pages.

In February, the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee met to review and approve the new set of science standards that the Department of Education will begin implementing by the fall of 2014 for students. But Sen. Mike Fair, R-Greenville, took issue at the time with teaching natural selection as fact, when he said he believes there are other theories students deserve to learn.

Fair was not as controversial on Monday. He said he wasn’t prepared to give the subcommittee something to vote on and requested the standards be sent to the full committee - as originally suggested with the wording of natural selection. The committee passed it 3-1 with Barbara Hairfield dissenting.

“Public education in South Carolina is making a differentiation between macroevolution and microevolution,” Fair said after the meeting. “They are not making that differentiation as it relates to natural selection. I would like to see that; haven’t figured out a way to write it.”

Microevolution refers to evolution within a species or closed group, macroevolution goes beyond a single species, according to a Berkeley University website called Understanding Evolution.

Before the meeting ended, Fair did not take kindly to Dillon’s statements, who said he believed the biology standards should be moving along the approval process with the rest of the state’s standards and performance indicators for science.

Greenwald keeps stating that Snowden is going to affect change in this world. He really does not know what that change is going to be. It can be, theoretically, positive, neutral or negative. Therefore, using Greenwald theory of Snowden affecting change any change in global FP can be seen as having been a result of Snowden. So using Greenwald’s rule, Snowden may in fact have caused the annexation of Crimea if not played a role.

Having been in the crowd when the 11 fans were killed at the Cincinnati Who show in ‘79, I can only think similar causes of death come about in a mud slide. I’m sure there were some bodily injuries, but compression of the chest and no ability to breathe probably the big culprit. Strangulation by being buried alive. How very sad.

Thoughts out to all of the families. There really are no words.

I wonder if this is going to lead to some kind of new technology? Maybe some way to judge moisture content in relation to soil type to be able to give warnings to move out of the area. Time for some science.

Hey now, I’ve assured by an unnamed employee at an unnamed insurance company that premiums are gonna go through the roof for next year and this will spell the doom of the ACA. Even though companies will have to justify such rate hikes to the government when 80% of premiums paid must go to cover claims, we’re supposed to believe that rates will jump 300% or more come August.

In discussing World War I casualties, the focus is usually on the horrendous losses in attempts to break the trench war stalemate, especially at Verdun and along the Somme in 1916. Horrible as these were, the first months of the war were actually worse. France lost 75,000 dead in the first month, including 27,000 killed in a single day (August 22, 1914). 1914 was the worst year of the war for French casualties, even though the war didn’t start until August . Germany and Russia suffered similar losses, though British casualties did not really ramp up until the following year.
The reasons for this bloodbath are not hard to see. Tactics had been falling behind technology for a century. In 1914, the European armies had magazine rifles, really good machine guns, and quick firing artillery. Railroads and motor vehicles allowed enormous armies to be assembled and thrown into the furnace in short order.
Yet, French troops still wore their traditional red and blue uniforms, with soft kepis on their heads. French currassiers rode into battle in polished breatplates and similarly bright plumed helmets, but no European army had effective steel helmets.
The armies would very quickly have wiped each other out if not for the collective decision to abandon mobility and dig in for trench warfare.

So for the small handful here who are into guns and things like reloading, let me simply say that today’s lesson is forgetting a powder charge is not quite as bad as a double charge…

It’s been a rough couple of months here & I decided to get a small bit of relaxation in. So I drive 20 miles on out to the range this morning. It’s almost completely snowed in - all but one of the windows is 3/4 covered by snow. The one on the end that everyone likes the most is shoveled out though there is no place to hang a target. There is a snowman out there though with lots of holes already.

To avoid wasting the trip out there completely, I pick up my sporterized Type 99 Arisaka & load 5 rounds of my hand loaded 7.7x58 ammo. Bang. Bang. Bang. Click. #%$@^&@&^!!!! Wait. Wait Wait. Eject. Go to load the last round & it won’t chamber. Huh? Try a different one. Nope. Look at the ejected cases and realize none of the four have a bullet in them. Pull bolt & yep, can’t see sunlight.

Drive home, get the bullet knocked out. about 1/3” ~ 1/2” of rifling marks on it, consistent with a primer pop pushing it out of an otherwise empty case.

I guess I should be really glad that it wasn’t a partial load that left it a few inches further up the barrel… I think I’ll keep the bullet on my bench as a reminder that no matter how much I think I’ve checked, I need to check again.

That reminds me off the time I was heading to my brother’s house in north central Ohio. I was all alone about midday in early winter around Thanksgiving. As I made a turn from one state highway to another, the sky was blackened in front of me, and it took me awhile to realize I was heading for a huge flock of crows. They were swirling around in the dramatic cloudy yet sunny sky. The recent tilled corn field below for acres was covered in crows. I didn’t have a camera, but I wished I did. Once in a lifetime image. There must have been thousands of them.

I know nothing of birds, but how does a huge group of crows form? Is is migratory or what? It not like you always see crows in huge groups.

It’s been a rough couple of months here & I decided to get a small bit of relaxation in. So I drive 20 miles on out to the range this morning. It’s almost completely snowed in - all but one of the windows is 3/4 covered by snow. The one on the end that everyone likes the most is shoveled out though there is no place to hang a target. There is a snowman out there though with lots of holes already.

To avoid wasting the trip out there completely, I pick up my sporterized Type 99 Arisaka & load 5 rounds of my hand loaded 7.7x58 ammo. Bang. Bang. Bang. Click. #%$@^&@&^!!!! Wait. Wait Wait. Eject. Go to load the last round & it won’t chamber. Huh? Try a different one. Nope. Look at the ejected cases and realize none of the four have a bullet in them. Pull bolt & yep, can’t see sunlight.

Drive home, get the bullet knocked out. about 1/3” ~ 1/2” of rifling marks on it, consistent with a primer pop pushing it out of an otherwise empty case.

I guess I should be really glad that it wasn’t a partial load that left it a few inches further up the barrel… I think I’ll keep the bullet on my bench as a reminder that no matter how much I think I’ve checked, I need to check again.

You did get very very lucky. When I used to do a lot of clay pigeon shooting I reloaded most of my rounds. I had a few where I got that “Ping” sound of a very light load. It was a pain to refill the hoppers on that old MEC reloader, so I always tried to get “one more round” out of the powder that was there.

I imagine you said “That was TOO close”, the problem with doing that kind of repetitive operations is that it’s easy to zone out, something breaks your rhythm and when you turn back you pick up where you THOUGHT you were. I was doing something in my shop for a project, had to cut 30 strips of wood all 12 inches long. Set up a stop on the miter saw, put the strip on, side it to the stop, drop the blade on it, flip it into the pile, slide the wood, drop the blade, flip it into the pile. I suddenly realized that each time I slide the wood over my fingers got a bit closer to the blade, and when I realized it, I was dropping a 10 inch circular saw blade, at speed, about 1 inch from the ends of my fingers.

I shut the saw off, took a good walk around, and had a stern talk with myself about not being stupid.

I’m glad you, if you’ll excuse the expression, dodged the bullet on that one.

Ban on political activity for temporary citizens by Myanmar’s Upper House underscores growing anti-Islam sentiment

On 20 March the Amyotha Hluttaw, Myanmar’s upper house, approved a constitutional amendment to prohibit temporary citizenship card, “white card”, holders from forming political parties.

The overwhelming majority of white card holders are Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state. The amendment is still contingent upon the approval of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, Myanmar’s lower house.

It was proposed by the Arakan National Party (ANP) of Rakhine state, which contains the largest group of ethnic Rohingya Muslim minorities in Myanmar. The ANP is committed to prompting the rights and interests of Buddhist Arakanese in Rakhine state - the ANP’s Chairman, Aye Maung, has said that the party intends to follow up with another constitutional amendment that would abolish the voting rights of white card holders altogether.

Nope, single stage. First batch with new dies and brass for this rifle. I remember stepping away to answer a question from my son and I probably skipped the powder step. Sucks, but better than a double charge - though in this case it would have over flowed. Still I worry about that when loading for my .45 Colt revolver as that long black powder case can hold way too much Unique smokeless powder.

The Arisaka made a good argument for weighing finished cartridges, or at least shaking them as long as your load doesn’t fill the case. That could have been a disaster.

I agree. It’s not only offensive to reason, but from an immediate, practical viewpoint, the entire capitalist system depends on corporations being NEUTRAL. In a functioning free market, all consumers, employees, and producers must play by the same rules. Can you imagine how dysfunctional things would be if where you work and where you buy things was affected by how the company’s owners felt about your personal lifestyle? Well, I just put myself through college, got a degree in physics, would love to work on nanotech at IBM, but I see their insurance doesn’t cover any medical procedure that involves stem cells.

I agree. I have mixed feelings about single payer, but I think it would greatly streamline the capitalist system, since employees could choose employers based on the nature of the job, WITHOUT having to consider what medical insurance they’ll get at that company.

The same problem could be solved by removing the link between employer and medical insurance. When I think about working at a company, I don’t have to think about what CAR insurance they offer. So why do so many of us, or most of us, have to consider a company’s medical benefits? This is not the way to streamline the free-enterprise system.

But I agree: single payer is ONE way to accomplish this.

Voting on space suit style is about as gimmicky as NASA can get.

And speaking of gimmicks, DWTS keeps going downhill, as they shove more and more gimmicks at the audience. Gimmicks like surprise eliminations during the show, unannounced, instead of at the end.

These are inserted to try and make the show as DVR-proof as possible.

The problem broadcasters have now is that people want to watch their entertainment when it is convenient for them. The problem with people who watch later is that they skip the commercials.

It’s also very clear now that the “judges” are just gimmicks themselves, props to be heels when certain “stars” need to get more sympathy votes.

In the end the producers will just wear out the audience. Instead of presenting a dance competition (even if always on an uneven playing ground) what we have is a twitter competition to keep eyes-on-tv without breaking at commercials.

I suspect the ratings will continue to decline as people find themselves with now where left to go, as far as interest level.

Our society is now one big gimmick, where tricks are being thrown at us left and right (see the NASA suit vote).

No … No, as the Z-series is still in the prototype or non-flight phase. The cover layer of a non-flight suit, which is used for ground-based testing, serves as abrasion/snag protection, a cover for technical details, and to a lesser extent, aesthetics. For a flight suit which is actually used for a spacewalk, the cover layer performs many other important functions such as micrometeorite, thermal and radiation protection. These requirements drive selection of specific high-performance materials and design details that would preclude us from using many of the features you see in these options for the Z-2 suit.

I know that sounds flippant, but I mean, seriously think about it. How many problems are there all over the world that we don’t solve every single day? There is always a valid humanitarian reason to get involved, but at some point the raw economic reality has to be taken into consideration. It costs money, money that we don’t really have right now, given how busy we are slashing our social safety net back home.

Well, first of all, I disagree with “Our economy is in the shitter”—it’s not, there’s plenty of money being made, it’s just all being distributed to the top 1%, not those who slave away in their companies. Secondly, I’m not for the “going it alone” stuff, either in aid; the Pentagon has discretionary funds it can use in small ways and there are other countries in Europe with a huge stake in developments in Ukraine. It doesn’t have to be Iraq all over again. Or even Afghanistan. I hope those days are over.

So far it’s only a little over 1/2 inch of very fine snowflakes.
I got up around 2 am to feed the woodstove and let the dogs out, the snow started falling around 2:30 am when the dogs came back indoors.
Looks like there will be a break coming up soon, then the next wave arrives this afternoon.
Low temp tonight is supposed to 18F.
I am soooo ready for all of this to be finished…

Maybe if Walgreen would price most of their stuff a bit lower, people wouldn’t wait to go to Walmart to purchase their OTCs. I think their prices are really overdone. And the one I use is right across the street from CVS; I only use it because my pharmacist had his own store and was undercut by them and had to go to work at WG. He still gives personal service.

I understand there was some concern by the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the mountain that created the mudslide that wiped out part of Oso, Washington. I didn’t catch the whole thing…but it sounds like there may have been concern about the area years ago and they said there probably was some looking past the recommendations to allow homes to be built in the area after the Corps reports. Sounds like some lawsuits and criminal charges will be forthcoming if contractors/builders knew they were putting people in danger.

That’s the video taken from one of the BASE jumpers who jumped from the top of 1WTC last September.

That incident, plus the more recent incident involving a teen climbing all the way to the top of the spire without anyone noticing anything wrong, shows how porous the WTC site is and how ineffective Port Authority security truly is.

I get how security can’t be 100% perfect, but the Port Authority has made a show of how much security is there. It’s a facade. They spent money on cameras, but didn’t bother to install them. Their police force is among the most highly compensated in the NYC metro area, and yet the site has repeatedly been entered by persons who don’t belong. It is past time to turn over security at the WTC, and other Port Authority sites to the local law enforcement agencies, particularly the NYPD in NYC. There’s nothing that the PAPD can do that the NYPD can’t do - and the NYPD can do it better, and for far lower cost to taxpayers/riders/toll payers. Eliminate the PAPD altogether.

The PAPD was established because there are bistate bridges and tunnels, and this gets around the jurisdiction issues, but there are far too many problems with the PAPD that can’t be solved with the existing system. The politicization of the Port Authority is a big reason. That politicization includes the Gov. Christie Bridgegate (GWB vendetta against Fort Lee Mayor for not endorsing him in a surefire reelection), and Gov. Cuomo and Christie’s manipulation of a recent toll hike to make the governors look good even though they were approving massive toll and fare hikes.

Dismantling the bistate agency isn’t going to happen anytime soon, not when both governors continue using the agency for their political purposes, but there has to be more accountability with the agency. Security problems at the WTC are only the latest issue. Cost controls on WTC reconstruction have long shown that the agency isn’t interested in fiscal responsibility when they can get tolling and fares to cover any overruns. The agency is planning a vast capital program over the next decade, including rebuilding two bridges (Outerbridge and Bayonne) and building two new spans (new Goethals), plus major rehabilitation of the Lincoln Tunnel approach and the GWB. PATH is also getting expanded to Newark Liberty airport, but it doesn’t appear that cost containment is in the picture, especially with the WTC PATH transit hub. And because there isn’t sufficient cost control, money that could go towards other major capital projects is sucked up by the projects already in the pipeline.

Removing or at least seriously reducing the law enforcement responsibility will free up more money to do what the agency was intended to do in the first place - build transit infrastructure in the NYC metro area. It would help refocus the agency on its core mission.

So, yesterday Erick, son of Erick used his WSB radio show here in the great state of Georgiastan to try to explain how the Hobby Lobby case is about “freedom of religion vs. freedom of worship”. Basically, arguing that it’s not really freedom of religion if you’re not free to practice your faith outside of your church.

He ignored (probably willfully) the fact that you are as free as you can be to practice your religion in relation to yourself. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I think reporters’ sources should be protected, but when they’re named by a defendant or other witness who actually was the source, that reasonable expectation of protection to the reporter has been violated by the source itself and it no longer applies.

“Rights” aren’t little islands we can choose to occupy at our own convenience and retreat to. There is a responsibility to the body which protects those rights as well. Too often, that responsibility is ignored.

I understand there was some concern by the Army Corps of Engineers regarding the mountain that created the mudslide that wiped out part of Oso, Washington. I didn’t catch the whole thing…but it sounds like there may have been concern about the area years ago and they said there probably was some looking past the recommendations to allow homes to be built in the area after the Corps reports. Sounds like some lawsuits and criminal charges will be forthcoming if contractors/builders knew they were putting people in danger.

I thought I read that the homes there were 100 years old.

It’s hormonal regulation, which has other valid medical applications.

But hey, I’ve said before that companies like Hobby Lobby could get the government off their backs pretty easily. Just cancel their employee health insurance and pay them enough to buy their own insurance. Then they can operate guilt-free, except of course that that would rob them of the ability to run the lives of their female employees and that’s what this is really all about.

Risk of slide ‘unforeseen’? Warnings go back decades

TIMES WATCHDOG: While a Snohomish County official said the area hit by the mudslide “was considered very safe,” the hillside’s history of slides dates back more than 60 years. One expert says he was shocked when homebuilding was permitted after a big 2006 slide.

Since the 1950s, geological reports on the hill that buckled during the weekend in Snohomish County have included pessimistic analyses and the occasional dire prediction. But no language seems more prescient than what appears in a 1999 report filed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, warning of “the potential for a large catastrophic failure.”

That report was written by Daniel J. Miller and his wife, Lynne Rodgers Miller. When she saw the news of the mudslide Saturday, she knew right away where the land had given way. Her husband knew, too.

“We’ve known it would happen at some point,” he told The Seattle Times on Monday. “We just didn’t know when.”

His perspective stands in contrast to what John Pennington, head of Snohomish County’s Department of Emergency Management, said at a news conference Monday. “It was considered very safe,” Pennington said. “This was a completely unforeseen slide. This came out of nowhere.”

The 2006 slide took place in winter, on Jan. 25. Three days later, as the new channel cut the land, “residents and agency staff reported the eerie sound of trees constantly snapping as the river pushed them over,” wrote the Stillaguamish Tribe’s Natural Resource Department on its website. But the sound of construction competed with the sound of snapping trees.

“They didn’t even stop pounding nails,” said Tracy Drury, an environmental engineer and applied geomorphologist who assessed the area with Miller soon after the landslide. “We were surprised.”

At least five homes were built in 2006 on Steelhead Drive, according to Snohomish County records. The houses were granted “flood hazard permits” that required them to be jacked up 1 to 2 feet above “base flood elevation,” according to county building-permit records. Another home was built in the neighborhood in 2009.

So, it does appear there was some newer construction allowed even after the warnings. This story is going to gain some momentum once they get past trying to find the missing.

If they want to make the claim that they’re paying for every claim, then go the whole nine and cover the employee contribution atop the employer contribution, as well as items like co-pays, deductibles, etc. Otherwise we have a situation where an employer says they pay the money to provide you free parking for your job, so they can decide what you drive to work.

Hell, several amicus briefs submitted to SCOTUS in support of Hobby Lobby’s position echoed the same dogma: “Birth control is bad because it allows women to have guilt-free sex.” Reading through the relevant portions, I saw it blamed for higher divorce rates, crumbling homes, the breakdown of the “traditional family,” and all other sorts of social ills that wingnuts simply do not want to take an responsibility for. In their minds, women having control over their own bodies is the cause of the breakdown of society.

This isn’t about “religious freedom,” except perhaps the most fanatical of religious beliefs that people need to be controlled “for their own good” and forced to live a “moral” life by their employer’s interpretation of such.

There is a reason that the Right constantly frames disputes of this nature — business fucking people over in the name of religion — as “religious freedom”. Low-info voters see “religious freedom” and say “Hey, religious freedom is a good thing!”, and act based only on that. They don’t bother looking at the actual issue.

Denying birth control coverage for religious reasons is a profoundly stupid path to start going down. You open the door to deny ANYTHING medical coverage-related on “religious grounds”. My religion says that the only permissible medical procedure is to shut your damn mouth and tough it out, so no coverage for you.

Years ago, I was with a friend at the House of Louie in Portland, OR and the lady with the dumpling cart came by. I grabbed a hum bao because I like them. My friend asked what was in it, and the dumpling cart lady replied, “It’s meat.” So she (hesitantly) took one as well.

When she left, as I was eating mine, I couldn’t resist the temptation. I told my friend, “Hum bao is rather unique as a dish - it’s the only one I can think of that’s named after the person it’s made from.”

Birth control means that a woman has choices. She doesn’t have to settle for the first guy that comes along and pays attention to her. She can work for herself, be independent and choose who she wants in her bed and in her life. That’s a problem for these freaks.
