Modern American Capitalism requires a desperate citizenry to function.

People that aren’t desperate for any income or hope at all don’t put up with bullshit from their employers. And if there’s one thing that American employers excel at, it’s bullshit.

That was pretty much Scalia and Roberts argument yesterday, which was an extension of HL’s BS. The corporation says it would be a “burden” on them to just stop providing health insurance, because their religious beliefs compel them to provide it for their employees. You know, except to part-timers, who don’t really count as employees.

And the next person who tells me this is about Hobby Lobby’s “religious beliefs” can explain why, before the ACA, they had no problem with providing a health insurance plan that covered the four forms of contraception they now say they have a religious objection to.

I don’t blame the employees - they privately concede that the merger with Comcast is going to be an absolute disaster, and that they hate their lives, and feel trapped in an inefficient, bloated corporate hellscape.

But now that they’re getting near-monopoly control of the internet/TV pipe, we’re going to have to learn to love that good ol’ BOHICA feeling.

This whole if you don’t like it, go somewhere else is an unbelievably stupid mantra that I’ve seen conservatives push for years. It sounds nice and all but then you figure that getting a new job isn’t exactly easy. It’s simple. HL should keep their religious beliefs out of what their employees do off the clock. If the owners of HL want to believe that contraception is wrong, that’s one thing, they don’t have to use it themselves but when health plans cover contraception, they need to deal with that.

As a poster on another board I’m on noted, the only reason HL brought this as a “religious rights” case is because if they’d brought it as the political case it is, with them objecting to being forced to change policies to be ACA-compliant, the case would have been thrown out.

A company that happens to be a big employer in a town, with few other competitors or options, decides to chop its health care insurance policies coverages on religious grounds.

It will no longer provide coverage for the following:
1) Viagra (promotes extramarital affairs in contra to religious beliefs);
2) birth control - all forms (same as 1);
3) transfusions and other blood products (violates religious beliefs);
4) refuses to cover any ailment stemming from consumption of shellfish or pork; etc.

Your options, as an employee in these circumstances? Find another job? At the same kind of employer? Good luck - no options. That means you’ll take a pay cut to work somewhere else.

But more to the point, you, as the employee, are paying the insurance premiums on your policy. It’s your policy that was obtained through the employer. The employer benefits from your good health. If you’re unable to obtain the insurance, you’re less well off economically and physically. That undermines the company’s long term fiscal health too.

And yet, the right wing is trying to claim that for-profit corporations have the right to impose their religious beliefs on their employees through the benefits that the employee pays for.

re: #94 lawhawk

That’s the problem though. It used to be that your good health and morale was considered a valuable thing for the employer, because employers in this country used to give a damn about their employees.

Then the oligarchs took over.

I have a pretty well-publicized dislike of the phrase “human resources”. Humans are not a resource. They are people. Modern American businesses see employees as nothing more than liabilities. They are a source of negative revenue. There is a pervasive belief among the executive class of this country that the work magically does itself, and employees are just these weird, smelly people that show up to the building that you have to pay every now and again. When the employees don’t show up, the work doesn’t do itself, so you have to have employees… but surely they’re not the ones doing the work.

It is, at its very basic core, a hostile relationship. It is a relationship based in adversarial tension. Nobody below the executive level in a major company likes their boss. And no boss in a major company likes their employees. It’s toxic, it’s wrong, and it’s unsustainable.

This is why the people must be kept desperate and low on options. If they had any actual choice, if they weren’t constantly filled with desperation and fear of losing everything, they wouldn’t put up with this bullshit.
