2 unfortunate things there, though: first, my last save is from just before leaving the Mi’hen Highroad for the first time. Second, one of my random drops in the section of playthrough I’d abandon is a TKO (Blitzball with Stonetouch) with a spare slot. Not sure I’d get another one of those out of this.

IIRC, Stone Breath is not something that can be permanently missed. If so, no real need to backtrack.

Yeah, I can’t manage that level of dedication anymore myself. The sad thing is I did it in 2 days because I’d started playing after it originally released, got an hour in, then stopped playing right up until about a week before ME2 released.

Heh. My son is into Pokemon. I usually prefer, say, Final Fantasy III or IV on my DS but recently made it all the way to the end of Platinum with my Turtwig starter (now 81st level Torterra. Earthquake of doom!) plus a couple of legendaries made the elite 4 not too hard. I can see why he likes the game but I’ll still prefer FF or Rune Factory or the like over it. Age thing, I suppose.

It’s a fix when nothing else is around, largely. I’ll normally go for a FF or a Tales—or occasionally go back to the Star Ocean’s I bought a few years ago, or Radiant Historia…, but I have friends on another board who got me into Pokemon around the time Platinum released.

Theoretically, I should be ‘too old’ too, since the franchise first came out when I was 19 rather than 9, but it can hook me for a while too. It’s just I always get distracted by something taking me away from my current game, usually because I hit a depressive section and on my next mania pick up something else :-p

Last I checked the USA is even ignoring Puerto Rico. Cuba is still being embargoed like it has ICBMs pointing at us. We continue to ignore most South American countries save for Columbia because of the drug war and in Central America, because of the drug war. This comes after decades of meddling by US interests and prior administrations. Which might explain the gun-shy attitude about South America. If the USA gets involved in Venezuela now it will backfire and only strengthen the Chavistas. It’s actually better this way.

Yeah, that law made it all the way to SCOTUS where it got smacked down 7-2.

The only disssenters were Breyer, who gave credence to the idea that violent video games increase violent behavior, and Thomas, whose dissent was from another planet entirely. Even Scalia said that Thomas pulled his dissent out of his ass.

Unfortunately I agree with Krugman on 538. I’m a numbers guy, and I think our media do a poor job framing date/numbers-related issues usefully. The deficit, the minimum wage, food stamp benefits, gas prices, income in equality, crime stats, even our favorite athlete’s salary could be much better understood if they were properly framed or at least offered with some more understandable proportionality.

538 is supposed to that and more, but it hasn’t done anything insightful. Today they have a sports nugget on why the NBA “steal” is this super important predictive stat (to another stat), assigns it a huge multiplier effect that is laughable as causal, then cherry picks one team with small sample sizes to try to show impact on winning (that looks like noise to anyone that understands stats.) Someone tell me why Philly has two of the top 5 guys while playing for an historically bad team.

I thought they might have stocked up some great ideas for the start of their venture, but it seems they are already out of them. And to Charles point, Global warming is not a field that was, until recently, run by former jocks that need an intern to open up an excel file. So hiring an against-the-grain skeptic of conventional industry wisdom for a data-driven site is not progressive or provocative, it’s stupid.

Review of Actuarial Studies

The direct costs of providing contraception as part of a health insurance plan are very low and do not add more than approximately 0.5% to the premium costs per adult enrollee.[6] Studies from three actuarial firms, Buck Consultants, PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), and the Actuarial Research Corporation (ARC) have estimated the direct costs of providing contraception coverage. In 1998, Buck Consultants estimated that the direct cost of providing contraceptive benefits averaged $21 per enrollee per year.[7] PwC actuaries completed an analysis using more recent, 2003 data from MedStat for the National Business Group on Health, and determined that a broader range of services (contraceptive services, plus lab and counseling services) would cost approximately $41 per year.[8] The most recent actuarial analysis, completed by the Actuarial Research Corporation in July 2011, using data from 2010, estimated a cost of about $26 per year per enrolled female.[9]

However, as indicated by the empirical evidence described above, these direct estimated costs overstate the total premium cost of providing contraceptive coverage. When medical costs associated with unintended pregnancies are taken into account, including costs of prenatal care, pregnancy complications, and deliveries, the net effect on premiums is close to zero.[10],[11] One study author concluded, “The message is simple: regardless of payment mechanism or contraceptive method, contraception saves money.”[12]

When indirect costs such as time away from work and productivity loss are considered, they further reduce the total cost to an employer. Global Health Outcomes developed a model that incorporates costs of contraception, costs of unintended pregnancy, and indirect costs. They find that it saves employers $97 per year per employee to offer a comprehensive contraceptive benefit.[13] Similarly, the PwC actuaries state that after all effects are taken into account, providing contraceptive services is “cost-saving.”[14]

Note that these actuarial cost / benefit analyses completely ignore all other conditions for which birth control might be prescribed, assuming pregnancy to be the only reason for taking contraception. Yet ignoring this employers save on average $97 per year per employee. Note that “per employee” doesn’t say per female employee, making the savings even greater when factoring in only women.

Now, just extrapolate in your heads and consider what the cost savings in the real world are, where birth control pills are prophylactic for far more than just pregnancy. Figure out how much employers save in direct costs, avoiding costly surgeries for endometriosis and ovarian cysts by simply offering birth control as part of their health plan.

THIS is why the Hobby Lobby narrative is complete bullshit. They aren’t being forced to pay for their employees birth control. Instead they’re asking to pay more in order not to cover it. They will be paying for more pregnancies, more invasive surgeries, more disease diagnoses and doctors visits for emergency care that could have been avoided via the very birth control pills they’re fighting to prevent the employee health plans from covering. In essence they’re fighting to create an environment in which their employees will statistically be less well. They’re fighting to pay more for all those unnecessary and unwanted conditions rather than allow their employees the option to avoid them through cheap, rational, preventative medicine.

So the next time somebody repeats the lie that any employer is being forced to pay for birth control, counter it with the truth: Birth control actually saves employers money, lots of it.

Brown County’s Republican Party is distancing itself from County Board candidate Jason Wisneski after statements he made about Democratic state Sen. Dave Hansen, whose granddaughter was killed in a 2007 accident.

Chairman Mark Becker issued a statement Wednesday calling for Wisneski to resign from the Republican Party of Brown County.

“This action is being taken because of recent comments made by Mr. Wisneski referring to State Senator Dave Hansen as a ‘murderer’ regarding the tragic death of his grandchild,” read the email that accompanied the statement issued by Becker.

Here he is taking responsibility blaming everyone else for his lack of moral character and judgement.

In a statement responding to the county Republican Party, Wisneski denied calling Hansen a murderer and said his comments were taken out of context and “doctored and photoshopped” on some “liberal websites.”

“In a stressful moment I merely pointed out what I perceived as media bias because a tragedy was brought up in my life two weeks before my election that was truly not my fault but if a liberal politician goes through a similar painful tragedy it is not covered by the press with the same vigor,” he wrote.

He contended that “closely held” businesses, like Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood, who brought the case, could be given that option without opening the same door for publicly owned companies.

So basically, Roberts is trying to thread the needle here. He seems to want to create an exemption for a privately held company with a small, core group of investors. Once you’re a larger corporation or a publicly traded company, however, that’s it. The “religious freedom” argument would no longer apply. In practice, this would mean that companies like Koch Industries, Hobby Lobby, and Chik-Fil-A could deny birth control coverage to their employees since they’re all private, but Walmart, Papa John’s, and Domino’s Pizza could not, at least not without buying back all their shares first.

An exemption like that would be interesting if it actually happened, especially in terms of future recruitment and/or retention of female employees.

That guy’s an idiot. Wages aren’t overhead. Anyone who’s taken Accounting knows this.

Overhead costs are defined as everything EXCEPT direct labor, direct materials, and direct expenses. Also, if someone is in an administrative or selling role, their salary is considered an expense on the current income statement. The salaries and wages of people in the production departments are assigned to the products manufactured as part of the cost of goods sold.

Maybe. Ford had good ideas but was too hard headed and demanded absolute loyalty.

A similar pattern of authoritarian control and stubbornness marked Ford’s attitude toward his workers. The $5 day that brought him so much attention in 1914 carried with it, for workers, the price of often overbearing paternalism. It was, moreover, no guarantee for the future; in 1929 Ford instituted a $7 day, but in 1932, as part of the fiscal stringency imposed by falling sales and the Great Depression, that was cut to $4, below prevailing industry wages. Ford freely employed company police, labour spies, and violence in a protracted effort to prevent unionization and continued to do so even after General Motors and Chrysler had come to terms with the United Automobile Workers. When the UAW finally succeeded in organizing Ford workers in 1941, he considered shutting down before he was persuaded to sign a union contract.

I don’t know. I think the # of employees has to be considered. Ventures as large at the Koch Industries would be too powerful, IMHO.

There is a whole lot wrong with any exemption to the birth control mandate. The solution is actually pretty simple. If a company doesn’t want to comply with the mandate for whatever reason, then they should drop their health care plans and tell their employees to go on the exchanges instead.

Oh, you mean that offering health insurance is a benefit that most professional employees expect when you recruit them, and dropping your coverage would put you at a disadvantage in terms of talent recruitment and retention? Shoulda thought about that before making your religious views about birth control an issue.

After production officially ended the following day, Ford factories shut down in early June, and some 60,000 workers were laid off. The company sold fewer than 500,000 cars in 1927, less than half of Chevrolet’s sales.

He shut down his entire worldwide operation for six months in 1927 to convert production from Model T’s to Model A’s. It wasn’t a case of just retooling the lines to a new production model: Ford just stopped production with two weeks notice and then began designing the new Model A from scratch — and all the heavy equipment needed to manufacture it. Many Ford dealerships just went out of business during that six months and General Motors took over leadership of the American automotive industry.

Curbside Classics:

Henry held on until spring of 1927, by which time Model T sales collapsed. He capitulated to the inevitable, and finally heeded the long ignored advice of Edsel and most of his (former) “men”. The factories were simply shuttered, and 60k workers let go. No severance or unemployment…a long unpaid vacation. Henry, Edsel and a few key engineers sequestered themselves to the task at hand: to create the first new Ford in twenty years. Was Henry still up to it?

Full production didn’t come again until 1929.

It would have been on the right hand (west side) of I-65, Grade Lane exit. They make Explorers there, too, I think. There’s a Ford heavy truck plant on the east side of town, on I-265.

One of the worst things GM ever did was stop making Saturns. We were a loyal bunch and they were pretty terrific basic cars at a good price. I never had an expensive repair on it. Routine maintenance kept it going.

The kid downstairs told me his grandpa is replacing the double overhead cam engine in the ‘97 I gave him. I didn’t want to go to that trouble, but I’m having to replace the intake manifold gasket on the 2002 I bought. My mechanic I almost forgot about since I didn’t have to use him for about 5 yrs) is charging me $225 to do it. Then, I can get it inspected. It will be well worth the $700 I paid for it. And I love the sunroof. : ) It has half the mileage on it (146K) that my old one had (around 300K—the odometer stopped working, too). Another 5 spd which I love.

After the “major repair” on my Saturn, a friend (the seller) is going to put a radio in it for me (he took out the one he installed), one like my grandson found online for $50—up to date with USB port and some other one. He also jacked up his speakers w/an amp and bass. I think he needs reading glasses (he does, too) because he thought it was a “Bose” but it turned out to be a “Boss”. : ) Very easy to install, though.

I will be content with the factory speakers, thank you very much.

Eisenhower probably had a hand in undermining the independent manufacturers during his term by appointing GM’s Charlie Wilson who unsurprisingly favored GM in defense contracts whilst the independents were struggling.

I had a ‘98 that I put 120K miles on before I replaced it with my current car (a Forrester) in 2005. In the interim the Saturn took a major hit in the Consumer’s Report ratings in terms of quality and maintenance.

That would be because the Aura was just a rebadged Opel and that marque’s quality is a lot closer to homeland GM than it was to SL/SW/SC Saturn. I worked at a Saturn dealership as a service porter for a summer in the late 90s. The things felt bulletproof even when you knew someone had brought them in with severe difficulities. OTOH, Opel doesn’t exactly have its pick of the cream of mainland-Europe engineers. They go to Daimler-Benz, VW-Audi, and BMW.

And don’t forget, that change also means that Aura and the rest of the second line of Saturns had metal body panels, so they were getting a lot of ugly dents their predecessors didn’t, too.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Just a day after the House voted largely along party lines to gut the Antiquities Act (which is how land can be designated as national monuments and national parks by the President), a Texas GOPer is looking at gutting the whole purpose of national parks by opening up the parks to oil and gas drilling.

It’s absolutely asinine. These parks are part of our legacy and heritage, and these guys want to drill and spoil the very land that had been previously set aside in perpetuity.

As it is, drilling is going on in close proximity to the parks. On my drive through the area around Moab to Canyonlands Islands in the Sky and Dead Horse Point, there were signs of drilling everywhere. There were pipelines being laid, and drilling rigs being installed at any number of vista points - and this is along the designated scenic byway.

The area already suffers from a long term drought condition, and the drilling operations require quite a bit of water, and fracking can and does affect groundwater, meaning that the drilling could poison the groundwater as well.

I’ll have to dig through my photos to find a couple of shots I took of the drilling operations.

But this is part of the larger resentment by people, primarily in the Western States, where the federal government has set aside land for national parks or monuments. That’s even though the feds also give cut rate usage for grazing on federal lands and mineral rights and severance fees/taxes are still all too low.

Another interesting thing from my trip - I didn’t know or realize that Arches national park is adjacent to a nuclear waste cleanup site. Just a mile down the road is a major DOE cleanup of a tailings dump that was used for decades in uranium processing (Moab was a boom town from the 50s onward due to uranium speculation and mining in the area). The DOE had to build a spur line and facility to transport the tailings to Grand Junction where they would be disposed in a proper facility.

The tailings dump is also adjacent to the Colorado River, which means that when it rained, some of the tailings would leach their way into the river. Drink up. Yum.

The cleanup will continue through to 2025.

There’s a traveling Pompei exhibit doing the museum tour thing. It’s in Philadelphia right now. Interesting set of artifacts, a sort of overdone video and associated presentation on the eruption itself, and then a very subdued and sparse display of the after effects including reproductions of some of the famous plaster casts.

Meanwhile, it turns out that tourism is a bigger generator of local economies than the oil/gas industry - less impact on the environment and gives more money to the local businesses than the oil/gas industry, which may see a surge as the infrastructure is built, but then only a handful of jobs remain. It might take 100 guys to build out the pipeline or erect the rigs, but a handful of guys to manage and maintain thereafter.

A tourism magnet like Yellowstone can support thousands of jobs indefinitely - you’ve got outfitters who will give tours, run adventure sports gigs, outfitters, restaurants, hoteliers, etc.

Yup. Been through parts of that area too. But there are vast areas in and around the national parks in Southeastern Utah that aren’t protected, and the energy companies are pushing up to the borders to get at what they think are deposits of oil and gas.

Here’s the NPS site’s map of UT protected lands (btw the lines are national heritage trails/routes) to give you an idea of where/how much land we’re talking about.

Morning all. Since this is a sort of auto related thread…And I know there are a few auto racing fans here, just thought I’d mention that there is a Formula One race this weekend in Malaysia. Kind of a strange feel to this one with the missing Malaysian air plane incident. I wonder if it is going to hurt the event in that F1 races count on many people from outside the country attending and of course all the Europeans and others from around the world that are part of an F1 race.

I imagine there is going to be some sort of acknowledgement of the tragedy and I would think all those that do attend will be discussing it. Malaysia will want this to come off without any problems as they have the whole world watching them right now.

I don’t know who all flies into and out of Malaysia, but I imagine there was a bit of a concern if Malaysia Airlines was a part of it.

Wingnuts always think the first thing the fed government is for is defense. A big old fence with guard towers would fall under defense. So taxes going for a fence falls into that thinking.

They never think any fed tax dollars should go to helping people and the like. That would be a state thing, and of course all the benevolence of fat cats generosity to helping the poor through churches and other social institutions.

Seems to me a good defense would be a healthy and prosperous citizenry too. And there is that thing in the preamble to the Constitution about Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness that gets less open interpretation than the second amendment. I’d say things like health coverage, minimum wages, food stamps, housing and the like would be under life, liberty and happiness. I guess that is a ‘liberal’ interpretation.

I think the attraction is based on the appeal of nationalism, even if it’s Russian nationalism. We have seen this before. Unfortunately some of the European neo-fascist parties decided to voice support for Israel because they see Jewish nationalism as a model for their own Christian nationalism. It was a very unhelpful trend.

Honestly, and I’m probably gonna trigger downdings here, I hate the idea of paying college athletes. Mostly because even our state schools here, let alone the private ones, wouldn’t be able to compete with the SEC and the B1G, who would then become the only conferences with reasonable chances to win the Bowl Subdivision football and D-1 basketball championships.

And the lost revenues from being non-competitive year in and year out because even our best school is ‘only’ in the PAC-12 will reduce the inflow to their general funds as well. This is only a good deal to the athletes who’ll be recruited to the SEC and B1G. And possibly to the schools doing it, since they’ll be able to sell themselves as the only real competition in college and thus possibly make even more than they’re spending. And they are getting full-ride scholarships, and unlike the 80s and 90s they’re allowed to work outside of the sporting season to earn pocket money on top of that.

But we also have the big conferences where players are simply the de facto minor leagues for the NFL and NBA, and that fact should be recognized,. Stop pretending that they are students and let them receive a salary, study part-time and have a chance to return and finish a degree when then their career ends or fails to take off.

The NCAA signed a long term multibillion dollar deal with television networks to televise the games in which the players perform. The players derive no direct benefits, and they themselves can’t benefit monetarily on their own from their own success (the Johnny Manziel incident highlights this most recently). Players are unable to cash in on their own performances in the present time - only after they jump to the professional sports leagues. They can’t get their own endorsements, etc.

Yet, the NCAA claims that the tv deal benefits the schools - except that it goes into paying high salaries to coaches and staffs, and very little of it ever reaches the student-athlete.

Moreover, many colleges end up spending more than they ever take in from the sports, draining limited funds from academics (the core reason these institutions exist in the first place).

But since sports is so deeply ingrained in college life, trying to separate the two wont happen anytime soon.

The NCAA should be splitting that money with the players directly across all the sports covered under those contracts. Revenue sharing - it works in the NFL, and there’s no reason it can’t work with the NCAA colleges/universities. It may not be a huge sum on an annual basis, when it gets down to the student athlete level, but it’s better than the current arrangement, and it should further open the door to allowing those athletes to gain endorsement deals and other efforts to capitalize on their performances.

Good idea. 50% could go to the student athletes, and the remainder goes to the universities to be split for academic purposes - upgrading facilities, tuition reduction, scholarships, etc.

But the NCAA has no real interest in doing that - it wants to preserve its position of privilege.

I’d go a step further - require colleges with billion dollar endowments to actually use the money to reduce the tuition (before financial aid kicks in). There are colleges and universities sitting on tens of billions of dollars, and yet they’re imposing prohibitive tuition rates, which they see as a way to limit who even thinks of applying.

I think that may be part of Putin’s strategy which is why people are getting nervous. Putin may only want a few breakaway regions but he could end up boxing in regions he doesn’t want. Just a few small land grabs could make a very large mess.

The abstentions fall broadly into two categories - those who are on or near Russia’s borders, and those who are nonaligned nations.

Those who opposed fall into the usual suspects class: Syria, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Bolivia, Belarus, Cuba, North Korea, and Russia. The other nays are Armenia, Nicaragua.

And honestly, while it was deplorable what was done to Ms. Parks, it would have been wrong not to mention a potentially deadly mistake if she had brought out a firearm. Nobody is taking guns away, there are simply proposals to restrict access to certain weapons.

Rosa parks simply wanted to be able to sit at the front of the bus, she was not demanding 15 seats at once…

Actually, Rosa Parks was sitting in the first row BEHIND the whites only rows. When the whites only seats filled up, the driver told Rosa and other black riders to give up their seats. Rosa refused and the driver called the police.
