I often wonder if some of these assholes who advocate violence on Twitter ever think about being recognized by someone they advocate violence against.

Or do they just believe they live in a world without consequences?

Dollard has been a real problem for some time. He has some intelligence, and his background in Hollywood has given him some experience in knowing how to work the levers of the Modern Media Noise Machine.

Unfortunately, his underlying addiction issues and his time spent in Iraq really seem to have “put the zap on his head.” He is prone to making extreme, hateful statements like this, which are enabled by the faux tough-guy Breitbartians.

Wow, a moment of sanity from FR:

Please be careful with this crap. There are many people with the same names. That’s why we, historically, remember killers with their full (including middle) names.

In EVERY shooting, people (including FReepers) have pointed out innocent people with the same names. This can ruin lives and isn’t right.

There’s also “concern” that the soldiers were unarmed and told to shelter in place. Because a bunch of armed people running around trying help resolve a shooting situation would really, really help clarify the situation.

Oh yeah, Freepers are wanting him to repeal the Clinton-era regs and allow soldiers to walk around armed on-base again. Because what have totally prevented this situation was a bunch of wannabe Rambos running around, on the lookout for a guy with a gun who looked like he was in a hurry.

You’re going to Ireland? Lucky you! Bring us back lots of pics.

The husband has a work trip and my midterm worked out to fall afterwards, so yep. For the cost of my airfare and food, I get to enjoy Ireland.

Not sure if we’re going to make it substantially out of Dublin; that part is yet unclear. Trying to sort out how feasible it is to not have a car but still do some in the countryside, advice from friends so far is …somewhat less so. But even a week in Dublin wouldn’t be a bummer, and then we can do all countryside the next trip.

(I will probably figure out how to get down to Waterford anyway.)

Ayep. Real life’s not a video game, people are not born with an inherent IFF that can automatically deduce that the guy running out of the building that you just heard multiple gunshots from is a crazed gunman looking to add to the body count and not a victim fleeing from the scene.

I’m reminded of the scene during the Phoenix shooting, when a bystander did in fact draw his gun and nearly shot a fellow witness who’d help wrestle Loughner to the ground and relieve him of his gun before the cops got there. These wingnuts you read on places like FR would have gone ahead, pulled the trigger, and then argued with the cops that they were justified in killing that man.

From Wikipedia…

While members of the Armed Services receive extensive small arms training, United States Military installations have some of the most restrictive rules for the possession, transport, and carrying of personally-owned firearms in the country. Overall authority for carrying a personally-owned firearm on a military installation rests with the installation commander, although the authority to permit individuals to carry firearms on an installation is usually delegated to the Provost Marshal. Military installations do not recognize state-issued concealed carry permits, and state firearms laws generally do not apply to military bases, regardless of the state in which the installation is located. Federal law (18 USC, Section 930) generally forbids the possession, transport, and carrying of firearms on military installations without approval from the installation commander. Commanders are given wide discretion in establishing firearms policies for their respective installations, and installation policies can vary from No-Issue for most bases to Shall-Issue in rare circumstances. Installations that do allow the carrying of firearms typically restrict carrying to designated areas and for specific purposes (i.e., hunting or officially-sanctioned shooting competitions in approved locations on the installation). Installation commanders may require the applicant complete extensive firearms safety training, undergo a mental health evaluation, and obtain a letter of recommendation from his or her unit commander (or employer) before such authorization is granted. Personnel that reside on a military installation are typically required to store their personally-owned firearms in the installation armory, although the installation commander or provost marshal may permit a servicemember to store his or her personal firearms in their on-base dwelling if he or she has a gun safe or similarly-designed cabinet where the firearms can be secured. Prior to 2011, military commanders could impose firearms restrictions to servicemenbers residing off-base, such as mandatory registration of firearms with the base Provost Marshal, restricting or banning the carrying of firearms by servicemembers either on or off the installation regardless of whether the member had a state permit to carry, and requiring servicemembers to have a gun safe or similar container to secure firearms when not in use. A provision was included in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2011 that limited commanders’ authority to impose restrictions on the possession and use of personally-owned firearms by servicemembers who reside off-base.

So, FiOS is having a free on demand week, and I’m watching WWZ for the first time. Read the book, so I know the story, and I’ve heard enough to know that the movie is nothing like the book.

But as the Mrs notes, the movie isn’t even good as a standalone product. It’s barely adequate, but the book is miles better.

Then again, think the movie should be lobo-ed.

Talking about Batman & Robin (1997):

The stigma this movie got at the time, and continues to get today, centers on the idea that it’s silly and cartoonish, and of course it is. Have you seen Batman? He dresses up like a bat and fights clowns. This is what he does, and there’s an inherent silliness and fun to it that no amount of poor lighting is going to remove. I know I’m harping on this, but it blows my mind that this is the movie that gets scorn heaped onto it, while Batman ‘89, in which the first thing Batman does is get shot and fall down, is considered a modern classic.

* Upside, got a kickin’ review today from a fellow Lizard at herosandwich.net . Thanks, mang!

ok, a little playing. I’m going to start with the assumption that your publisher does standard publisher marketing games. So the big deal for you is getting noticed. What follows are tricks and techniques for someone who actually has a book (or more than one book).

- Free story. Take one of the stories in the book to which you have the rights, and post it online with a link to the book from which it came.. Yes, it’s the amazon or baen book sample principle. The thing is it works. Especially if you use that as a cornerstone for further actions I’m about to list. But first, if you don’t have rights to independently produce that story, write another in the same style and use it for the hook. On to building on the cornerstone.

— Business cards. Purchase a batch of business cards that have a copy of the cover on one side and your info on the other. Oh, the cover isn’t the whole card. You’ve also got a QR that links to that free story. Give them out frigging everywhere. Send them to friends and family to pass along and drop in those bowls restaurants and such tend to have. (And who knows, you might even get one of those free meals. Bonus.)

— self-pirate. Make a torrent link to the story file and put it on every pirate/P2P site you can find.

— Go to library conferences. You’re not going to be able to afford all of them, so focus your attention. In a perfect world you go to the ALA (American Library Association). In the real world you can’t afford that. Instead find where your state’s public and school librarians (the latter are called media specialists, by the way) are holding their conferences and go to both. Talk to the organizers to see if you can do a presentation on writing or game design. If they accept make sure the link to your sample story is in your blurb. If they don’t still attend and try to shake the hand of and give your business card to each and every person there. An amazing number of those librarians will take a chance at reading your story. A smaller portion will buy your book based on that story.

— Because your book is gaming connected you can try this at gaming cons. You won’t have as much success but that’s not zero success.

— Every forum you’re on should have a means of backlinking to both your story and your book. You’ve linked directly to the amazon site here (good for you). A better option would be to link to a website that had the story and a further link to the amazon site.

- I am convinced that smart publishers should send copies of their books to key libraries gratis and count it against advertising. If you can do this, at a minimum try to send one to the largest public library in each state.

- You are in wikipedia. Or rather some games you’ve made are in there, and they mention your name. Play nice by the rules, but get a wiki page for you and another for your book.

- Write and publish more stories and books. There’s a habit readers have of checking to see what else you’ve done. One-shots do ok, but repeat writers do better: not only cumulatively but on each item individually.

ok, a little playing. I’m going to start with the assumption that your publisher does standard publisher marketing games. So the big deal for you is getting noticed. What follows are tricks and techniques for someone who actually has a book (or more than one book).

- Free story.

There is a free sample linked there, but I’m gonna talk to the publisher about changing it to the full “The Blue Tailor” story. More representative sample.

— self-pirate. Make a torrent link to the story file and put it on every pirate/P2P site you can find.

Can’t, won’t, not in my nature.

— Because your book is gaming connected you can try this at gaming cons. You won’t have as much success but that’s not zero success.

I think we have another month before the Amazon exclusivity ends, then the publisher can get copies up on the DriveThruFiction site, and then I can get the word out to folks who bought the game associated with the stories that said volume exists (which I haven’t been able to do because of my terms of agreement with the OBS gaming sites).

- You are in wikipedia. Or rather some games you’ve made are in there, and they mention your name. Play nice by the rules, but get a wiki page for you and another for your book.

I wonder if I’ve fallen into a gray area, because I have a user page on wikipedia. If that supersedes any attempt for someone to make a page about me. Don’t know. Or maybe I’m just not… is the word they use “notable”?… enough.

- Write and publish more stories and books. There’s a habit readers have of checking to see what else you’ve done. One-shots do ok, but repeat writers do better: not only cumulatively but on each item individually.

They have already started on how “Since Obama made the post a “Gun-Free Zone” that’s why there was the shooting. All I can say is that 25+ years ago when I was just a young private they made clear that you didn’t carry any personal weapons on post. That if you lived in the barracks you had to have them secured in the arms room, if you lived in post in family housing you could keep them in your house, but you couldn’t just strap on your six shooter like Marshell Dillon and walk around.

We had a guy in the barracks get busted for having a pistol in his wall-locker, he was out pretty damn quick.

re: #252 chadu

[snip]

— self-pirate. Make a torrent link to the story file and put it on every pirate/P2P site you can find.

Can’t, won’t, not in my nature.

[and snip again]

OK, I’m going to peg at this a bit. First, I said self-pirate as a bit of a joke. And yes we all know that piracy and all that is rampant. But the better label is: expose yourself to a wider range of potential readers.

You are not supporting piracy to set your book story up as a torrent file, nor by putting that link up on multiple P2P index sites.

At the same time your single biggest problem is that you’re (functionally) invisible. Your book is one of almost a million published this (in the US alone). You want people to notice you long enough to take a quick look at what you’ve got. You can’t offend them or they won’t look. But they need to notice you.

So every single hook is to put your name and this nifty story you’ve written in front of a new group of potential readers.

You are not supporting piracy. You are using yet another marketing tool.

Now that rant out of the way, if you can’t/won’t then you can’t/won’t. I get the position, held it myself for a decade or two. Just, well, think about it.

Marie Barnard was delighted when, after decades of silence on the topic, Mississippi passed a law requiring school districts to teach sex education. But the lesson involving the Peppermint Pattie wasn’t what she had in mind for her sons.

The curricula adopted by the school district in Oxford called on students to unwrap a piece of chocolate, pass it around class and observe how dirty it became.

“They’re using the Peppermint Pattie to show that a girl is no longer clean or valuable after she’s had sex — that she’s been used,” said Barnard, who works in public health. “That shouldn’t be the lesson we send kids about sex.”

[…]

To participate in sex education classes, students must get a signed permission slip from their parents, which some districts that don’t support the law have made especially challenging. In some classes, the only discussion about condoms focuses on their failure rates. And the law requires that students be taught that homosexual activity is technically illegal in Mississippi.

Theorizing that the plane was depressed and therefore turned off it’s own transponder, diverted to a different airfield*, and then got a new paint job so that it would feel better about itself?

* - I’ve found at least one site that claimed just that - the transponder was turned off, the plane changed course, started up a different transponder, claimed it was a different plane, landed somewhere (Diego Garcia I think), and got a quick change of paint, decals, and identity number so it could sit there and openly not be noticed. With the crew and passengers neatly disposed of without a peep of course.

Clegg loses to Farage in EU debate

Viewers declared UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage the winner in the second of two ill-tempered debates with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg after he claimed the EU wants its own “army and navy”.

A YouGov survey published immediately after the hour-long debate showed 68 percent thought Farage had come out on top, compared to 27 percent who favoured Clegg.

Farage bolstered his “everyman” image by saying that the European Union’s open borders had only served the rich, and had “left the white working class, effectively, as an underclass”.

Putin defies Obama in Syria as arms flow fuels Assad resurgence

“Russia is now doing everything to ensure that Assad wins convincingly,” Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East analyst at the Moscow Carnegie Center, said by phone. “If Russia can show it’s capable of carrying out its own foreign policy, regardless of America’s wishes, it will be a major achievement for Putin.”

Mr Putin, who last year averted US airstrikes on Syria by brokering a chemical weapons accord, is seeking to prolong the rule of his closest Arab ally, ignoring US and European Union calls for Dr Assad to step down.

Russia is supplying a “lifeline” of ammunition and spare parts for tanks, armoured vehicles and helicopters, said Ruslan Pukhov, an adviser to the Defence Ministry in Moscow. Pukhov declined to comment on the upgraded rockets, as did Vyacheslav Davidenko, a spokesman for Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport.

to “crazy little women.”

Aanndd, I just realized I’ve misheard those lyrics for years. What’s the word for that?

The correct line is:
I’m goin’ to Kansas City, Kansas City here I come (2x)
They got a crazy way of lovin’ there, and I’m gonna get me some

I shoulda checked the lyrics before posting.

Look for an alternate version, or a change in one verse. Sure I’ve heard your ‘wrong’ version too.

I wish there was a direct link to a audio or video file for this school. We’ll have to make do with the lyrics.

Stone Coyotes - “Death of the American Song”

Down in the valley
Where the Red River flows
Standing at a graveside
By the bramble and the rose

We’ve come to bid a fond farewell
In this our darkest hour
We’ve gone and neglected
Our pale wildwood flower

So beat the drum slowly as they carry her away
Wrapped in white linen as cold as the clay
I see Tammy and Patsy, they’ve got their their long black dresses on
Mourning the death of the American song

Songs that haunt our memories
Sung on porches long ago
And all ll that’s left of them today
Are footprints in the snow

I’m waiting at the station
But I fear I wait in vain
‘Cause Old 97
Is rusting in the rain

So beat the drum slowly, as they carry her away
All wrapped in white linen, just as cold as the clay
I see Tammy and Patsy, they’ve got their long black dresses on
They’re mourning the death of the American song

And the radio is playing
Got the latest top ten on
The kind you hear today
But you know know tomorrow will be gone

And I see those painted faces
They are smiling on TV
And I find that they’re all
Rank strangers to me

So beat the drum slowly as they carry her away
Wrapped in white linen, Lord, as cold as the clay
I see Tammy and Patsy, they have their long black dresses on
They’re mourning the death of the American song.

Old school.
