Mickey Rooney, the exuberant entertainer who led a roller-coaster life — the world’s top box-office star at 19 as the irrepressible Andy Hardy, a bankrupt has-been in his 40s, a comeback kid on Broadway as he neared 60 — died on Sunday. He was 93 and lived in Westlake Village, Calif.

His death was confirmed by his son Michael Joseph Rooney.

Though Mickey Rooney did not appear in The Wizard of Oz, he did appear with Judy Garland for a number of stage shows connected to the movie in LA. And when Ms. Garland was given an Oscar for performance in the movie, it was Rooney who presented it to her. Thus with Mickey Rooney’s passing, the last famous person associated with the Wizard of Oz has died. RIP

So, would the same people who are complaining about NYC schools not being allowed to be used by church worship services have a problem with a ban on those sames schools prohibiting Cthulhu worship practices? Muslim religious ceremonies? Wiccan rites? Jewish ceremonies?

Oh, you mean that the court found that the City rule prohibited all religious groups from holding services in school buildings. Shocking. Equal treatment.

Would it surprise you then that the question arose because the Christian congregation couldn’t find a suitable place for worship it could afford, and then sought to use the school after hours? Or that the City’s policy was designed to specifically avoid the establishment clause issue under the 1st?

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that a city Department of Education policy that prohibits church services in public schools is constitutional. The policy allows religious and other community organizations to use classrooms and other facilities for after-hours programs but denies access to those seeking to use the space as a “house of worship.”

Two of the three judges on the panel agreed to reverse a 2012 lower court decision by U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ordering the department not to enforce the rule against the Bronx Household of Faith. The appeals court disagreed with the judge’s finding that denying the church access to the school would violate First Amendment protections regarding free exercise of faith.

“In the District Court’s view, because Bronx Household and its congregants have a constitutional right to worship as they choose without interference from government and cannot afford to pay for a large enough site to accommodate the entire congregation, the Free Exercise Clause obligates the (department) to provide them with a subsidized facility in which to exercise the right,” the majority wrote. “The Free Exercise Clause, however, has never been understood to require government to finance a subject’s exercise of religion.”

By refusing to host religious services, the department is correctly seeking to avoid the risk of violating the Establishment Clause, which prohibits government from endorsing a religion, the two judges added. The dissenting judge disagreed, in part by citing a survey finding that of the 50 largest school districts in the United States, New York City is the only one that excludes religious worship from its facilities.

The problem with that tactic in this case is that a great many millions of ‘brown people’ are Christian. If the ‘brown people’ in question were Pentecostals from Nicaragua, I doubt groups complaining about a mosque would mind. Many evangelicals would actually welcome that.

With the Scotts Mills quake, it was a little after 0530 in the morning - the neighbor’s dog was howling and that woke me up. I looked out the window, and noticed it pawing at the ground. Then dead silence - no birds, nothing, followed by a sound like low thunder and then the shock wave hit.

It was pretty strong in terms of intensity. Not just the typical horizontal motion, but vertical motion as well.

For some years now I’ve hesitated or even refused to shop at a business that displays the jesus fish on the door or, like Chick Fila or Hobby Lobby make their religion and bigotry part of their advertised identities. That is my right as a consumer. I have never asked business owners about their personal beliefs on any subject - none of my business. But when that business puts its beliefs in my face, it adds that element that makes me question whether or not I want to proceed with a relationship. The responsibility for the results is entirely on the business owner who made it an issue in the first place.

I never considered Eich’s resignation a “Win,” because I feel that the man still has good ideas and Mozilla would have benefited from them. Someone, in discussing Bush’s painting, apparently noted that Hitler liked to paint, too. It’s the perfect, “You know who ELSE used to…”, and yeah, it’s a really stupid comparison.

The first comment was essentially, ‘Yeah, it’s so stupid to compare Bush to Hitler. Obama’s the one who’s like Hitler!! He’s Hitler Junior!!!’

Farther down the thread, not to be outdone, someone said Obama is so bad Hitler should be Obama Junior. Presumably because Presidenting while black is worse than killing millions of Jews, Roma, Communists, and gays while starting a war that killed upwards of 50 million people worldwide.

I’ve seen this imprecision before. I’m tired of it.

We do not have clarification that the vast majority of employees wanted him to stay. We know that he was not asked to leave by most of the employees interviewed.

We do not know the board wanted him to stay. We know they did not ask him to leave. We also know they accepted his resignation without asking him to change his mind (same sources you’re using).

Not asking someone to leave is not necessarily wanting them to stay - or leave. Depending on the voices of a few, especially when the few are chosen unscientifically or when not appointed to speak on behalf of others, is untrustworthy.

I don’t know. Seems Florence Welch (Florence + the Machine) gets by without slinking around the stage ‘dancing’ like Beyonce and others. I’m sure if given thought, there are many others.

As far as dancing goes, well, I bet there are many that could do without the movements of Miley, Britney and others.

I’m sure this is a generational thing. Seems the modern pop artists have to have dance moves, a DJ and band, backup dancers and a lot of props, etc. to cover for the talent. I used to be fine with a band that didn’t look so hot but had real musical talent and creativity.

(Get off my outdoor concert lawn!)

This is one heck of a video (my inlaw sent the link to me, knowing how I love wildlife and landscape photography). The photographer here is one cool customer considering that he’s dealing with an immature bull elk at close range.

And by close range, I mean, head butting-close.

Eventually the elk gives up interest, but not before testing this photographer’s wits and willpower to avoid being gored and/or seriously injured. Oh, and what stories he would have to tell.

For some years now I’ve hesitated or even refused to shop at a business that displays the jesus fish on the door or, like Chick Fila or Hobby Lobby make their religion and bigotry part of their advertised identities. That is my right as a consumer. I have never asked business owners about their personal beliefs on any subject - none of my business. But when that business puts its beliefs in my face, it adds that element that makes me question whether or not I want to proceed with a relationship. The responsibility for the results is entirely on the business owner who made it an issue in the first place.

Doesn’t it sometimes seem like Christian symbology and rhetoric has more to do with showing other people you are special, saved and better than others? I have never got the whole display thing with modern Christians. It really is so different from the way the main player, Jesus, is portrayed. If he were to come back again, as many Christians hope, I’m afraid they will be really bummed with the results. There will be much kicking out of the temples, knowing more and chiding the elders, and casting out the fakes.

I have no problem with religious groups / churches being allowed to use facilities after hours for programs, as long as they don’t make worship part of the schedule, and they are charged a rate equal to what a secular non-profit would be charged.
