Right Wing Journalism Watch: Breitbart “News” Photoshops Nancy Pelosi’s Head on Miley Cyrus

Right wing humor = sociopathy
Wingnuts • Views: 32,620

As Chez Pazienza says, the Breitbrats are really just trolling liberals with this deliberately offensive post by right wing “street artist” Sabo: Welcome to Breitbart California.

I’m interested in it from the standpoint of a connoisseur of inadvertent wingnut comedy, and this is a great example of the genre. It’s like looking at something humorous in a funhouse mirror — the result is disturbing and weird, like a glimpse into a sociopath’s mind. They just can’t help revealing their own neuroses and reactionary bigotry, no matter how much they might talk about “rebranding” or “outreach.” This right here is the real deal.

Click here to see it. (Possibly NSFW.)

There’s more on the page linked above, and it doesn’t get any better. The most striking thing about these crude Photoshops is how utterly devoid of a point they are.

You can’t make this shit up.

The right wing media are in a real downward spiral - the only way they can get noticed by an increasingly debased audience is to keep finding new ways to be offensive without crossing the line into outright hate speech.

Judge rules MoveOn’s LA Medicaid expansion billboard can stay up

BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — On Monday, a federal judge from the Middle District of Louisiana issued a ruling that will allow moveon.org’s billboard criticizing Governor Bobby Jindal for denying health care to 242,000 Louisianians to remain standing.

In her ruling, the judge concluded, “the Lieutenant Governor underestimates the intelligence and reasonableness of people viewing the billboard…. The State has failed to demonstrate a compelling reason to curtail moveon.org.’s political speech in favor of protecting the State’s service mark.”

12 Testy Toad T  Apr 7, 2014 1:31:13pm

And whatever blowback comes will make the Right circle their wagons ever tighter against those Evil Librul Enemies of Free Speech!!!!1, because they are an affiliation-driven movement, not a problem-and-solution-driven movement.

Some will launch into a Pam/Malkin-esque drunken twitter tirade. Others will tut-tut disapprovingly, so as to feel that they belong with the mainstream (I can name a few at LGF). Very, very few will attempt to effect meaningful punishment or change; those few that make any concrete effort will simply leave the ever-shrinking tent, pushing the GOP further into the self-radicalization spiral.

The image isn’t news. It’s not even newsy, or newsworthy. It’s propaganda pushed by a right wing debased of any facts or logic. Instead, it hopes to shock and horrify a right wing base that is in a constant state of horror over the state of the Union, despite the fact that things are going rather well despite the best efforts of the right to take down the economy and the President.

But this is the best they could do? I guess we shouldn’t press them to do more, since they’ll only keep shoveling deeper and deeper.

I’d like to think that they’re entering echo chamber territory, but there’s enough hatred of the President and all he represents that they think this will inure benefit to them in the midterms later this year.

The problem with modern Conservatism is that it is no longer a coherent philosophy. It’s become ‘The Opposite of What I Think Liberals Want’ for most Conservatives. Hence the opposition to a healthcare reform plan THEY DESIGNED, or the firmly entrenched denial of AGW.

When Trayvon Martin was killed, the response I saw from a number of wingers was “Dirty Harry wannabe went too far and killed a kid.”

Then Obama made his ‘my son would look like Trayvon’ comments, and the Right HAD TO side with Zimmerman, so Trayvon HAD TO become a thug who deserved it.

If nobody on the Left had made any noise, I wonder if maybe some on the right would have objected to that ridiculous, vile Photoshop? But, since someone on the left did, it now must be Defended At All Costs.

Rep. Vance McAllister (R-La.) is facing trouble after a local newspaper reported he can be seen kissing a female staffer in a surveillance video.

On Monday, The Ouachita Citizen published a surveillance video allegedly showing McAllister and Melissa Anne Hixon Peacock, McAllister’s district scheduler, at the Republican’s congressional office in Monroe, Louisiana. The two people in the video can be seen embracing and kissing for almost half a minute.

McAllister made headlines in January for inviting “Duck Dynasty” star Willie Robertson as his guest to President Barack Obama’s 2014 State of the Union address.

A lot of people, older conservatives in particular, see Miley Cyrus as nothing but a whore. So putting Nancy Pelosi’s head on Miley’s dirty slutty hell-bound body insults them both, and also serves as a condemnation of the depravity of California, home of both women.

MrBWS has been union for a few years now so we’ve been wallowing in that union thug big money.
We now pay more in federal and state income taxes that we had annual income during the GWB drought years.
OTOH, we can also afford to heat our house in winter, cool it in summer, eat properly, go to the dentist and doctor without worrying how to pay the bills, and still toss a significant amount into savings.
Would I like to keep that tax money for myself? Sure I would. Just wish that tax money would get spent on frivolous stuff like roads, bridges, education, etc. instead of larding more small government fat asshats.

Losing your job for being gay is different from losing your job for opposing gay marriage. Unlike homosexuality, opposition to same-sex marriage is a choice, and it directly limits the rights of other people. But the rationales for getting rid of Eich bear a disturbing resemblance to the rationales for getting rid of gay managers and employees. He caused dissension. He made colleagues uncomfortable. He scared off customers. He created a distraction. He didn’t fit.

It used to be social conservatives who stood for the idea that companies could and should fire employees based on the “values” and “community standards” of their “employees, business partners and customers.” Now it’s liberals. Or, rather, it’s people on the left who, in their exhilaration at finally wielding corporate power, have forgotten what liberalism is.

One more reason California’s population keeps growing. Along with its natural beauty and diversity: deserts, snow covered mountains and beautiful beaches, all within an hour or so of each other. Not many places have that.

Hey, we have all that in NC—except the desert, thank goodness. And they make movies here, too. : )

Putin’s Attack On East Ukraine Began Today: What This Means For Europe And The US

Ukraine and the West will be confronted with this tragic fait accomplis in the next couple of weeks. It will be too late for the West to do anything other than to babble about enhanced sanctions and warn of further isolation of Russia. The transitional government of Ukraine will have to proceed with a presidential election that excludes its annexed Eastern portions. Putin knows that possession is 99 percent of the law. He has achieved part of his dream. The metallurgical heart of the former Soviet Union has been restored to its rightful place. Now it’s time to turn to Belarus, Moldavia, Georgia, Armenia, and even Kazakhstan.

Honestly one of the main reasons I’d rather not live in California or anywhere in the southwest is my concern about long term viability of the water supply.

It’s worth remembering that CA is a big, diverse state in this aspect, and the water issues are a big complex thing with lots of problematic history and different causes/issues in different parts of the state.

But yes. There are definitely places where more people are living there (and thinking they need to have a water-chugging lawn) than there should be.

Actually the desert sucks, unless you love golf in 110 degree weather, cuz u can have that practically any day out in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Twenty-nine Palms, and all the other palm named cities out in the desert.

But it is kinda neat to drive through occasionally. It’s got a stark beauty to it. Or it’s just plain ugly, depending on your perspective.

House Panel Set to Refer Lerner Case to Justice Department

Despite all the outcry, the ultimate significance of these steps is in doubt. DOJ officials already have indicated they are skeptical that any criminal charges will result from the IRS controversy, which erupted almost a year ago. IRS officials admitted that they had improperly singled out conservative tea-party groups for special burdensome scrutiny as they sought tax-exempt status.

Even the ultimate impact of a contempt citation remains unclear. Attorney General Eric Holder himself was held in contempt of Congress in 2012 by the GOP-run House over the botched Fast and Furious gun-trafficking operation.

It has to go through the DoJ so it’s unlikely anything is going to become of it

More very bad reporting about more very bad TV:

Oops: Scientists sequence DNA and find Hitler mistakenly married a Jew hours before he died

A British documentary that will air on Wednesday night claims to have DNA evidence that suggests Adolf Hitler unknowingly married a Jewish woman as one of his final acts before his death.

According to experts, strong circumstantial evidence suggests that a hair sample provided to the Channel 4 show Dead Famous DNA by relatives of a U.S. Army officer probably belong to Hitler’s wife, Eva Braun. The hair was found on a brush inside a cosmetics case with the initials E.B. that was taken from Braun’s apartment.

However, Channel 4 was not able to obtain a DNA sample from Braun’s living relative to authenticate the sample.

By sequencing the hypervariable region of the mitochondrial DNA, scientist found a genome within the mitochondria of the cell that is associated with Ashkenazi Jews. The cell is passed down from mother to daughter over generations.

[…]

Gaahhh…

As the phrase goes, this is not even wrong.

The bad TV is the “Dead Famous DNA” which, as indicated by them declaring a result without a control (i.e., actual mtDNA from Braun’s maternal line), is crap.

However, the RawStory writer David Edwards demonstrates his ignorance in paragraph I put in bold.

It’s not even wrong.

“… found a genome within the mitochondria ” - no. They are not looking at a “genome within the mitochondria” - they are testing a few spots within the ring-like structure of mitochondria DNA, that have mutated over the past few thousands of years, enough to indicate a very, very coarse level of ancestry.

“The cell is passed down from mother to daughter over generations” - no. The mitochondria is not a “cell” (and hasn’t been on its own in a billion years), and they exist within eukaryotic cells. Most of our cells have hundreds to thousands of them. The mitochondria are passed down from the mother because ova include a high number of mitochondria and the spermatozoa very few, which don’t make it inside (with possible rare exceptions.)

“…associated with Ashkenazi Jews. ” But, that does not make Braun (even assuming the hair came from her) Jewish. It is false to believe that all who identify as “Jewish” descend from the same group of people. The mitochondrial haplogroups most often associated with Ashkenazim are also found among those who have no known connection to Jewry either old or contemporary.

Nope, people don’t like being controlled. I’m glad more people are speaking out.

You’ve never attempted to explain what fundamentally separates anti-gay sentiment from outright racism, why pushing back against the former through voluntary boycotts produces a chilling effect.

During the height of the civil rights struggle in the 1950’s and 60’s plenty of racists wrapped up their animus in religious teachings. Same during slavery and reconstruction, when white pastors read their congregations the passage imploring slaves to obey their masters.

Personally I think you’re just kind of a sniveling bitch, who’s sole reason for defending the rights of anti-gay bigots so vociferously is the fact that progress on the issue has been delayed until now.

This one is for Bratwurst and all others who live in Illinois and oppose gerrymandering:

Illinois Independent Redistricting Amendment

The Illinois Constitution currently specifies that the General Assembly draws the state Senate and House Districts after every Census. If that process fails, a legislatively appointed commission creates the maps.

The Illinois Independent Redistricting Amendment would establish an 11-member Independent Redistricting Commission to draw the maps. The new structure and process builds on the most effective, fair redistricting systems in other states, tailored to the unique politics and legal requirements of Illinois.

Under the proposed amendment, the independent Commission would draw district boundaries using the following criteria:

Contiguous, substantially equal in population, and in compliance with federal laws
Not drawn to dilute or diminish the ability of a racial or language minority community to elect the candidates of its choice

Respecting the geographic integrity of cities, towns, and other units of local government
Respecting the geographic integrity of communities sharing common social and economic interests
Not drawn to purposefully or significantly discriminate against or favor any political party or group, and not considering the residence of any person

The Commission would hold public hearings throughout the state both before and after it releases its draft maps. The process would be extraordinarily transparent: All Commission records and communications between Commissioners will be open for public inspection, and all Commission meetings will be open to the public and publicly noticed at least two days ahead of time.

The Alabama House of Representatives has passed a resolution calling for an amendment to the US constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

The House approved the resolution yesterday, submitted by independent representative Richard Laird.

The resolution calls marriage “a sacred covenant, solemnized between a man and a woman”, and urges for a change to the US constitution.

It goes on to say that the Supreme Court “officially severed its respect for marriage” when it last year struck down the Defence of Marriage Act, which had banned recognition of same-sex marriage federally.

I’ve yet to hear a compelling argument for why shit like this should be considered a legitimate political position in the modern era. These people are expressly rebelling against the rule of law in order to try and strip an entire class of citizen of their civil rights and equality.

Fuck.them. There is zero obligation on supporters of equality to condone this bullshit by remaining silent in its face. Boycotting the assholes and the people who support them is the free exercise of voluntary free association. Only a **** would view this an exercising undue control over people.

The less Americans know about Ukraine’s location, the more they want U.S. to intervene

Did they stop teaching geography in school?

Survey respondents identified Ukraine by clicking on a high-resolution world map, shown above. We then created a distance metric by comparing the coordinates they provided with the actual location of Ukraine on the map. Other scholars, such as Markus Prior, have used pictures to measure visual knowledge, but unlike many of the traditional open-ended items political scientists use to measure knowledge, distance enables us to measure accuracy continuously: People who believe Ukraine is in Eastern Europe clearly are more informed than those who believe it is in Brazil or in the Indian Ocean.

About one in six (16 percent) Americans correctly located Ukraine, clicking somewhere within its borders. Most thought that Ukraine was located somewhere in Europe or Asia, but the median respondent was about 1,800 miles off — roughly the distance from Chicago to Los Angeles — locating Ukraine somewhere in an area bordered by Portugal on the west, Sudan on the south, Kazakhstan on the east, and Finland on the north.

There were actually two teams of Budweiser Clydesdales in action that day. The second was in New York City and it delivered beer to Al Smith, the former governor of New york state who lost the 1928 presidential election opposing Prohibition.

In Saint Louis the celebration of the resumption of legal beer production had started at midnight Central Time and had gone on for hours. The same was true in Chicago and Milwaukee. The article doesn’t mention home schooling. I would say the vast majority of the respondents went to public school…

On March 28-31, 2014, we asked a national sample of 2,066 Americans (fielded via Survey Sampling International Inc. (SSI), what action they wanted the U.S. to take in Ukraine, but with a twist: In addition to measuring standard demographic characteristics and general foreign policy attitudes, we also asked our survey respondents to locate Ukraine on a map as part of a larger, ongoing project to study foreign policy knowledge. We wanted to see where Americans think Ukraine is and to learn if this knowledge (or lack thereof) is related to their foreign policy views. We found that only one out of six Americans can find Ukraine on a map, and that this lack of knowledge is related to preferences: The farther their guesses were from Ukraine’s actual location, the more they wanted the U.S

Chicago isn’t a slimehole, its just the politics which are slimy. And despite that Chicago’s city government is ultimately functional, even if its corrupt. and that gives Chicago a critical advantage. The governmental problems in New Orleans prior to and during Hurricane Katrina, for example, saw corruption compounded by a mixture of sloth and incompetence which left the Crescent City unable to tighten up in a dire emergency.

I’ve seen the Chicago River, it’s a slimehole.////

(Yes, I know it’s vastly improved from years ago. And even the corruption level in Chicago, albeit legendary for an American city, is nothing on the scale of, say, an Eastern European “democracy”.)

As some of you may recall, I mentioned last week that I had put in an application for a custodian’s job at the local “intermediate” school (grades 3 - 5 as a separate building for some reason). Turned in my application on Thursday and the application period closed Friday and this morning (!) I got a call asking me to interview tomorrow morning at 9:30. :D

I find the idea of being a school janitor rather pleasing. Enough money to live decently on, benefits, reasonable hours & plenty of time for my hobbies (shooting guns & cameras ;) So, I’d really like to get this one, so any prayers positive waves and good thoughts any lizard can spare would be gratefully accepted.

OkCupid’s CEO Donated to an Anti-Gay Campaign Once, Too

OkCupid’s co-founder and CEO Sam Yagan once donated to an anti-gay candidate. (Yagan is also CEO of match.com.) Specifically, Yagan donated $500 to Rep. Chris Cannon (R-Utah) in 2004, reports Uncrunched. During his time as congressman from 1997 to 2009, Cannon voted for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, against a ban on sexual-orientation based job discrimination, and for prohibition of gay adoptions.

He’s also voted for numerous anti-choice measures, earning a 0 percent rating from NARAL Pro Choice America. Among other measures, Cannon voted for laws prohibiting government from denying funds to medical facilities that withhold abortion information, stopping minors from crossing state lines to obtain an abortion, and banning family planning funding in US aid abroad. Cannon also earned a 7 percent rating from the ACLU for his poor civil rights voting record: He voted to amend FISA to allow warrant-less electronic surveillance, to allow NSA intelligence gathering without civil oversight, and to reauthorize the PATRIOT act.

It took me years to realize, but many people think that ‘freedom’ is the same as ‘getting your own way all the time no matter how stupid it is.’ So being told ‘no’ is just the first step to tyranny.

I’d love to see a study on the intersection between these types of people and the teahadis.

I think a big part of the problem is that for many things that are important to many people, there really is no objective truth to be had (e.g., religious views, moral precepts, priorities in life, dealing with other people etc. etc.).

That leaves people unprepared to deal with something like the laws of nature where there is objective truth to be had, especially when the news is unpleasant (i.e., climate change or evolution).

The probably apocryphal story I heard here in Canada is that some engineering students broke into the Dean’s house and started to assemble a tractor in his living room. Half way through the floor gave way. So they finished assembling it.

The Dean came home to find he had no living room and a tractor in his basement.

Your Logical Fallacy Is: Tu Quoque

You avoided having to engage with criticism by turning it back on the accuser - you answered criticism with criticism.

Pronounced too-kwo-kwee. Literally translating as ‘you too’ this fallacy is also known as the appeal to hypocrisy. It is commonly employed as an effective red herring because it takes the heat off someone having to defend their argument, and instead shifts the focus back on to the person making the criticism.

Example: Nicole identified that Hannah had committed a logical fallacy, but instead of addressing the substance of her claim, Hannah accused Nicole of committing a fallacy earlier on in the conversation.

The linked article has at least one big lie. Big surprise.

Of course, it’s been a decade since Yagan’s donation to Cannon, and a decade or more since many of Cannon’s votes on gay rights. It’s possible that Cannon’s opinions have shifted, or maybe his votes were more politics than ideology; a tactic by the Mormon Rep. to satisfy his Utah constituency. It’s also quite possible that Yagan’s politics have changed since 2004: He donated to Barack Obama’s campaign in 2007 and 2008. Perhaps even Firefox’s Eich has rethought LGBT equality since his 2008 donation. But OkCupid didn’t include any such nuance in its take-down of Firefox. Combine that with the fact that the company helped force out one tech CEO for something its own CEO also did , and its action last week starts to look more like a PR stunt than an impassioned act of protest.

Hey, we are getting better. It’s a young team and with some playoff experience we will get better. We have some players out too…one happens to be a Blackhawk escape.

This city needs to see their pro team in the playoffs. Plus, we wouldn’t see you guys ‘til the finals if we (doubtful) reach them. I do think we can give a team like Boston some game if that happens to be the first team we play. We can take on any team in the East, but Boston and Pittsburgh give us trouble, but we are closing in. I do hope though, we can sneak around either Detroit or Philly to move out of the 8th spot so we can go against Pittsburgh. That would be a raucous set of games due to the cities being so close and a budding rivalry now that we are in the East.

Also there’s a huge difference between donating to a candidate and donating to directly take away certain people’s civil rights. The entire point is that using the initiative process to use the popular vote to enact official discrimination is abhorrent. Yagan could easily have supported Cannon on tax policy, or for some other self interested dumbshit reason that had nothing to do with bigotry against gays.

What’s instructive is that Eich, who also donated to bigoted candidates like Ron Paul and Linda Smith, was never castigated for those donations, not even as a pile on. Because donating to candidates is a legitimate expenditure. Prop. 8 was distinctly disgusting in that it used the popular vote to attack and marginalize a minority, and support for it could not possibly be interpreted as support for anything else.

Killgore is, again, just being a sniveling bitch.

I imagine Kate Mulgrew has not had a lot of gigs since ‘Voyager’ that paid as much or gave her that kind of exposure. And it’s not like Leonard Nimoy didn’t do cheesy voiceover work…

It’s as though the older she gets (she’s 58 now), the more conservative she became. And go figure, she’s married to an OH Dem named Tim Hagan who describes himself as an avowed liberal and long time friend of the Kennedy clan.

It probably didn’t help that she’s probably suffering a lot of Catholic guilt, as well, over a child she had as a young woman and gave up for adoption. I think I read that she met her about 2 yrs ago. Some people simply cannot move on from those things and keep them bottled up inside forever, gnawing away.

Well, the Bluejacks did their part by clubbing the Islanders yesterday. The Devils have their chance tonight, facing lowly Calgary.

The article from the other day described the pro-8 campaign as “unprecedented”.

Indeed it was, in the sense that this was the first time all of CA was subject to incessant anti-gay propaganda.

However, it was also not unprecedented at all, in the sense that the anti-gay propaganda used by the pro-8 forces was the same old shit as always (i.e., “the perverts are coming for your children”).

It was also that McClellan had the bad luck to face several Confederate generals who were better than he was. Defeating the likes of Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in battle was a tall order for any general.

Overall, McClellan was measurably better than Lee on matters of logistics, and was even somewhat better in terms of overall war strategy. But Lee was a good deal better operationally, and tactically he was miles ahead of McClellan.

However, it was also not unprecedented at all, in the sense that the anti-gay propaganda use by the pro-8 forces was the same old shit as always (i.e., “the perverts are coming for your children”).

There’s a tragic pre-history to this that most people are unaware of:

The initiative the elder Bianchi pushed was I-677, a 1997 statewide initiative (Brodeur showed up in town in 1999) that would have banned employment discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people. Unlike Rachel Bianchi’s low-profile parks levy, I-677 was high-profile and, more importantly, a miserable failure.

A pro-gay-rights initiative was a bad idea in 1995 when the group Bianchi led, Hands Off Washington, first floated it. Cal Anderson, the state’s first openly gay member of the legislature, helped to shoot it down in early 1995 because, as gay-rights groups had made plain in battles against anti-gay-rights initiatives, voting on the civil rights of a minority was unconstitutional. Hands Off Washington was, in fact, founded on this principle, in order to fight demagogues like Lon Mabon. (The wisdom of this POV was vindicated when Colorado’s anti-gay Amendment 2 was tossed by the Supreme Court.) In short, civil rights should be the job of principled legislatures (see Civil Rights Act of 1964)—and not electorates.

But Anderson died in August of 1995 and Bianchi immediately began pushing for a gay-rights initiative. Bianchi’s personal crusade wound up destroying the organized gay-rights movement in Washington State. I-677 lost by 20 points. And by handing conservative legislators those anti-gay numbers, Bianchi’s ill-advised initiative scuttled any hopes of passing a comprehensive gay-rights bill in the legislature, a bill that had come within a single vote of passing in 1993 and 1994. After the defeat, Bianchi took a paper-pushing job in Olympia, and Hands Off Washington changed its name to Equality Washington and quickly collapsed.

This was the gay rights’ Waterloo in Washington State. It set the movement back years in no small part because it was predicated on a fundamentally flawed idea, that civil rights, anybody’s civil rights, should ever be put up directly for a popular vote.

At this point, I think it would be best for FL to ditch all of its statutes relating to self defense and go with the applicable doctrines from common law.

“No duty to retreat in public” is bad craziness that is rapidly infecting FL law. It doesn’t help that the FL prosecutor in these cases seems to be the most incompetent prosecutor ever.

We went through the office closet last weekend, with some of that being gone through for the first time since before I moved in. Cables have all been properly cable-tied, sorted, and put into actual useful storage bins as opposed to random cardboard boxes that were falling apart. Cables for things we no longer own/use are slated for recycling.

re: #333 Dark_Falcon

Interesting comment.

I am a great admirer of Grant, and I always felt that he was a man of similar temperament to myself: reserved, quiet, easily discomfited by parties and social gatherings, but thoughtful, kind and generous (though perhaps I’m being too generous to myself!)

Grant said, “McClellan is to me one of the mysteries of the war”, and the comment rings true.

Robert E. Lee’s cousin, Cassius Lee once asked him “which of the Federal generals he considered the greatest, and he answered most emphatically ‘McClellan by all odds.’ ”

I think that testifies to your comment about logistics, in that McClellan was an excellent organiser and Lee probably could see that. To paraphrase Shelby Foote, the pride McClellan instilled in the men and the training he gave them, was integral to all that the army of the Potomac did and achieved. Said Lincoln, “We must use what tools we have. There is no man in the Army who can man these fortifications and lick these troops of ours into shape half as well as he. If he can’t fight himself, he excels in making others ready to fight.”

From what I know about Little Mac, and from reading his diaries and letters, he seems a hard man to like: he’s got a chip on his shoulder, and seems to feel perenially underappreciated. He was derisive and dismissive of Lincoln, referring to him as “the original gorilla”, as “nothing more than a well-meaning baboon”, and other such comments…and as has been mentioned, he ran against Lincoln in 1864 on an anti-war ticket (he’d have sued for peace in ‘64 if he’d won I think). Who knows what would have happened to the slaves had he won?
I don’t think he’d have pressed emancipation very hard. Early in the war, he actually threatened to forcefully put down any slave insurrections where he encountered them.
His remarks on race perhaps speak even louder on the matter: “I confess to a prejudice in favor of my own race,” said McClellan after the war, “and can’t learn to like the odor of either Billy goats or n*****s.”

I don’t like McClellan much, on the whole, and I never have.

But I think he was (marginally) more skilled at soldiering than his reputation suggests. I don’t think he was timid. Perhaps over-cautious might be a better description? He was not afraid of bloody action (Sharpsburg remains the bloodiest single day battle in american history, with more casualties than the US took on D-Day). While urging Burnside to take the bridge over the creek, McClellan said something like, “I don’t care if it costs him 10,000 men, he must move”.

But his tendency to overinflate the enemies numbers was his greatest fault, and led him to overcaution. People often wonder why he only used a third of his effective strength at Sharpsburg: Fitz John Porter’s Corps was one of the two left in reserve. But Porter’s remarks on the day played right into McClellan’s own fears:
“Remember, General,” said Porter, “I command the last reserve of the last Army of the Republic.”

This in spite of the two reserve units having a higher total strength than the entire Confederate army.

I read somewhere that if Lee had as many troops as McClellan believed, then McClellan’s strategy (both at Sharpsburg and elsewhere) of caution made some military sense.

But since he had far more men, of course, in reality the strategy was probably not sensible. Of Sharpsburg, McClellan wrote, I think to his wife, “Those in whose judgment I rely tell me that I fought the battle splendidly and that it was a masterpiece of art. […] I have done all that can be asked…twice saving the country.” In his typical style, he said he felt proud of “having, with a beaten & demoralized army, defeated Lee so utterly.”

But his best line of all, “Well, one of these days history will I trust do me justice.”

I guess we’re still waiting for that to happen :)

Well said. That Eva Braun-Jewish connection and the TV show, and the rest of it, is more carnival show than science. It is pretty far from science.

It does a disservice to people’s understanding of genetics when such tripe comes along and is published in the news media. It serves only to exaggerate genetic differences between ethnic groups and create artificial borders. Pretending there are great genetic differences between ethnicities is a fantasy, and in my mind, it is quite insidious, since it commandeers molecules to serve political purposes: nucleotides are such beautiful composites themselves, structurally speaking.

Most synthetic chemists have an abiding admiration for structure, and I have long admired the coplanarity of aromatic compounds, and the electronic anisotropy that helps us characterise aromatic protons. I have affection for pyrimidines (which comes from my hours in the lab), but it is uracil, with its lactam-lactim tautomerisation that is particularly interesting - and it, I have never used in a synthesis.
I admire these flat and the bumpy, the level and the choppy, the coplanar and the asymmetric. Those sp2 constituted nitrogenous bases are as pleasing as the asymmetric (bis)spiro-2H-chromenes. They have aesthetic beauty.

But they have functional beauty as well, which the biochemist knows and admires. We are all indignant when people tell these stories about ‘race’ and genes, mixing up these molecules with politics and ideology, especially when they’re on shlock TV shows, and prefixed with the word ‘science’.
