Flaw Found in Key Method for Protecting Data on the Internet

This is a big deal
Internet • Views: 45,971

The tiny padlock icon that sits next to many web addresses, suggesting protection of users’ most sensitive information — like passwords, stored files, bank details, even Social Security numbers — is broken.

A flaw has been discovered in one of the Internet’s key encryption methods, potentially forcing a wide swath of websites to swap out the virtual keys that generate private connections between the sites and their customers.

On Tuesday afternoon, many organizations were heeding the warning. Companies like Lastpass, the password manager, and Tumblr, the social network owned by Yahoo, said they had issued fixes and warned users to immediately swap out their usernames and passwords.

Are you fucking kidding me?

“This still means that the little lock icon (HTTPS) we all trusted to keep our passwords, personal emails, and credit cards safe was actually making all that private information accessible to anyone who knew about the exploit,” Tumblr’s security team wrote on their site. “This might be a good day to call in sick and take some time to change your passwords everywhere— especially your high-security services like email, file storage and banking, which may have been compromised by this bug.”

Mr. Chartier advised users to consider their passwords gone. “Companies need to get new encryption keys and users need to get new passwords immediately,” he said. “And do it quickly.”

Change all my login ids and all my passwords?

So much for the pain in the ass of using Lastpass. It was totally worthless.

It doesn’t help you to change it if the website in question hasn’t updated to deal with the bug. Charles talked about it a bit downstairs earlier.

I use a low value password where I don’t really care if it gets cracked for the vast majority of websites. It means I can remember how to log into things, and lets me save the brainpower for the complex passwords associated with the things that really matter.

For me, I find this to be an acceptable compromise between security and practicality.

This is taking a while to bubble up from the tech world to the mainstream media, but it’s a very serious problem for a LOT of websites. And it’s made worse by the fact that if you were hit by the exploit, there are NO TRACES OF IT anywhere.

The LGF servers were patched today to fix the bug in OpenSSL, but we may need to have you reset your password here as well, because prior to this morning our server OS was vulnerable to the bug.

Since we only recently started using SSL to handle secure tasks, the odds are low that we’ve already been hit by the exploit. And we don’t store any really serious personal info like credit cards, etc., so we’re not a high profile target for criminals.

Nonetheless, we’re now working to get our SSL certificate revoked, reissued, and reinstalled, and when that’s done we’ll decide how to handle the password issue.

As always, I consider it vital to stay on top of these issues.

That’s what Lastpass does too. The problem is, Lastpass can’t always figure out the right fields to fill in for you, and when that happens it’s a pain to have to log in to Lastpass to copy your password so you can then paste it into the correct field.

Every single time.

11 Justanotherhuman  Apr 8, 2014 5:52:14pm

“Three security researchers at Codenomicon’s offices in Oulu, Finland, first discovered the bug last Thursday. The researchers, Antti Karjalainen, Riku Hietamäki and Matti Kamunen, immediately alerted the Finnish authority that is charged with responsibly disclosing security bugs. As it turned out, a security researcher at Google, Neel Mehta, had also discovered the bug and the Google security team had been working on a fix.

(snip)

“Security researchers say it is impossible to know for sure whether an attacker used the bug to steal a victim’s information, but they found evidence that suggests attackers were aware of the bug and had been exploiting it. Researchers monitoring various “honeypots” — stashes of fake data on the web aimed at luring hackers so researchers can learn more about their tools and techniques — found evidence that attackers had used the Heartbleed bug to access the fake data.

:But actual victims are out of luck. “Unless an attacker blackmails you, or publishes your information online, or steals a trade secret and uses it, you won’t know if you’ve been compromised,” Mr. Chartier said. “That’s what makes it so vicious.”

Hmmm.

Are you registered at their website? This doesn’t directly affect the operation of LastPass or 1Password - the problem is with web servers that have the OpenSSL system installed, leading to a highly non-secure website. Almost any site that depends on an HTTPS connection for security has actually been wide open for more that two years.

That’s why I’m calling this a very big deal.

So—this has been known for a couple of years now? And the Bitcoin Boys are more nervous than ever, it seems.

coindesk.com

“The Heartbleed flaw has reportedly been known to researchers since 2011, and even ‘black hat’ hackers since 2012, meaning critical data on a large portion of the internet has been openly available for years. There have been no confirmed reports of exploits, though attacks leave no trace.

“Security admins around the world are now hurriedly applying a fix, and changing certificates and secret keys on the off-chance they could have been compromised.

“Since it weakens any site using the ‘secure’ https protocol, the threat isn’t specifically to bitcoin services like wallets and exchanges. But given authorities’ tendency to ignore bitcoin thefts or inability to investigate them effectively, it could leave bitcoin services more vulnerable than ‘traditional’ online financial or other critical ones.”

I do somewhat the same thing - I use the same “system” for generating a password on most sites, with minor variations here and there depending on the length and character requirements. My important passwords deliberately do not use that system.

I’ve been thinking about that (I’ve gotten interested in language design and implementation). We’re really past the point where adding an extra 4 or 8 bytes for the array length is expensive memory wise; and Java and C# prove you can do the bounds checks efficiently.

President Obama has repeatedly and publicly expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people—and warned Russian leader Vladimir Putin that there will be consequences if he takes over any more Ukrainian territory. Yet Obama’s administration has so far been reluctant to hand over the kind of intelligence the Ukrainians could use to defend themselves. I’m guessing both. You’ve probably got a ton of Russian moles in the Ukrainian armed forces, so you’re compromising US intelligence gathering. More importantly, all the shit going on in the eastern oblasts is Russian provocation to get the Ukies to kill someone so the Russians can go charging in to protect the poor oppressed ethnic brethren.

The Ukranians’ best bet is to go slow and try to wait them out as much as possible; it doesn’t look like there’s a lot of local support for this sort of rebellion and the pro-Russian forces don’t look like they were hired for their patience or brains.

Four Pinocchios from WaPo, now gets a Mostly False from Politifact
Democratic group assails Koch Brothers’ role in Louisiana Senate race

So as I started to post last time, there’s a real problem with these fact-finders.

See, the Grimm-Cassidy-Palazzo act didn’t do what the WaPo and Politifact claim. The bill it amended, the Biggert-Waters act, did indeed grandfather old premiums and cut back new ones.

What the GCP amendment did was delay implementation by a year so the amounts could be ‘studied’. Because of the way the bill was written there was a maximum age for grandfathered premiums. In short, several lower premiums that would have been grandfathered in 2013 weren’t because the active date was 2014.

I didn’t know that earlier. I went looking because the WaPo gave four pinnochios to something it said was partially true - just that the net effect is misleading. (Note not untrue, just misleading). I’m suspicious when the rating that’s supposed to be for “completely untrue” is applied in ‘partially true’ cases.

The WaPo through 2012 gave three times as many 4Ps to Republicans as Democrats. Since that time they’ve given them in equal amounts. Even back in 2012 I thought many of the 4Ps given (to both sides) were more for news-splash than accuracy, and since then it’s been worth.

I do not have the time to check every single post. Instead I’m going to go with a simple rule of business: if you can’t trust the businessman, don’t do business with them.

Speaking of data and flaws, yet another paper on Neanderthal admixture with modern humans is being wrongly reported in various news outlets.

Here’s the preprint that came out some weeks ago:

Neandertal admixture in Eurasia confirmed by Maximum likelihood analysis of three genomes

Here’s the part of the abstract that seems beyond the news media to decipher:

[…] We apply this likelihood scheme to triplets of human and Neandertal genomes and compare the relative support for a model of admixture from Neandertals into Eurasian populations after their expansion out of Africa against a history of persistent structure in their common ancestral population in Africa. Our analysis allows us to conclusively reject a model of ancestral structure in Africa and instead reveals strong support for Neandertal admixture in Eurasia at a higher rate (3.4% 7.3%) than suggested previously. […]

Highly technical, yes, but it can be parsed and teased apart with care.

Here are two examples that get it wrong:

Scots scientists reveal more recent DNA link to Neanderthals

[…]
But this mingling of the two human sub-species was thought to have taken place long ago in Africa [ed. - nope, that was only option and has not been the dominant hypothesis; ever since Paabo started to publish Neanderthal genomes the major hypothesis is that the admixture has taken place in Eurasia], before our ancestors spread across the globe.

The new evidence suggests Homo sapiens and Neanderthals got together much more recently.

[…]

and another:

Neanderthals Interbred With Humans? New Method ‘Closes A Hole’ In Evolution Argument

[…]

The findings, published in the April 2014 issue of the journal Genetics, explains how Neanderthals most likely interbred with modern humans after they migrated out of Africa. The new technique ruled out the other popular theory that humans who left Africa evolved from the same ancestral subpopulation where Neanderthals evolved from.

[…]

That latter part which I boldfaced is a more subtle error. The issue which is being debated is not whether sapiens and neanderthals evolved from the same prior (African) species; evidence points to that we came from the same latter genus Homo ancestors, though the date of separation between sapiens and neanderthal certainly appears to be uncertain.

Rather, what the paper to be published in Genetics is attempting to determine is if we can determine the probability that the (evidence interpreted as) the remnants of sapiens+neanderthal admixture could in fact represent the remnants of older (within Africa) Homo ancestry and should not be interpreted as later admixture.

The findings in the paper is that what we interpret as admixture is yes, much more probable to be admixture than the left over of much older, archaic DNA.

This is all highly technical, but it demonstrates how unequipped our popular media is to undertake describing the frontiers of science in 2014. Short quips and sound bytes can not do justice to the forefront of knowledge.

As the Earth’s surface warms, the belt of arid/dessert climates that sit between the sub-tropical and colder regions will move poleward.

San Diego is notably drier than LA, which in turn is drier than the central California coast. But, central Baja is even drier than San Diego.

Over the next century or two it is expected that these climates will move poleward.

As San Diego becomes more like central Baja we will likely lose our ability to grow much of the food we do now.

…also I think this highlights another problem. The Koch criticisms all to often run into problems with factual accuracy. I’m sure there are plenty of legitimate things to complain about but the Koch stuff all too often gets into nutty territory.

I think you miss forest for individual trees. And yes, so do a lot of liberal protesters.

Real problem is the new emerging system resulting from decisions like Citizens U. and McCutcheon. The notion that billions in donations don’t even create the appearance (much less reality) of corruption, or quid pro quo, is laughable.

Only 600 people nationwide donated the maximum last year (125k total) to individual campaigns, as opposed to SuperPacs of course where donations aren’t necessarily limited at all. And an even smaller number will likely donate the max this time to individual campaigns, as that figure has been effectively raised to $3.5 million. Which means an even smaller group of people will be able to buy greater and greater access. We’re marching from democracy to oligarchy. Well, at least we’re not a monarchy.

Gotta love SD. Pretty much best weather in the country; at least if you don’t like surprises or extremes. The city’s basically room temperature outdoors most of the year. Even LA’s weather sucks by comparison.

The old records for this date were “brutal” temps—a low of 61 and high of 82. Most of the country would kill for those kinds of “extremes”.

Habanero peppers found on school playground

Setzer said it isn’t known at this time how or when the peppers got on the playground. The peppers are so hot people handling them wear gloves.

About two dozen students and a teachers’ aide had to be decontaminated on Monday and the school was closed Tuesday so playground equipment and school surfaces could be wiped clean. The school is expected to reopen on Wednesday.

Habaneros and other superhot peppers are not to be trifled with. I made the mistake once of scratching my cheek while dicing some chili peppers (not habaneros — not found in China). My eyes felt like someone had poured soap in them, and my nose ran for a good hour afterward.

Now multiply that effect by several 10,000s.

These things don’t spring from a vacuum. They are, at least in part, a result of the billions being spent by a relatively small number of people. These problems may have always existed. They aren’t the hottest peppers in the world. But they are the hottest you can buy in most grocery stores. By comparison, jalapeños and even serrano peppers are mild.

No one eats them raw unless it’s a fraternity hazing or competitive eating event.

Habaneros are currently the 4th hottest peppers in existence.

At 100,000-350,000 Scoville heat units, they’re 10 times hotter than serrano peppers. They can make a grown man stupid enough to eat one on a dare puke and whimper like a little girl, so finding some on a kids’ playground would definitely be a hazard.

Honestly, how is their pomp and pageantry any different than the modern Presidency’s?

Except that since they’re only heads of state and not of government, they might be able to take a little of the heat off their head of government…

If you could reduce the President to ‘just the first citizen’ again, it might make sense to condemn other countries’ royalty. But as long as both sitting and former Presidents need to be treated like royalty because if they don’t someone will take advantage of the lapse-of-security to eliminate them… :-(

OT, but this guy got an article on Wikipedia:

Aníbal Milhais

Milhais found himself in the midst of the battle of La Lys, in the field of Isberg, covering the withdrawal of Portuguese and Scottish soldiers. Within a few hours 1,938 men were killed, 5,198 wounded and about 7,000 taken prisoners. Despite the disaster, many Portuguese soldiers showed extraordinary bravery, including Milhais, known as Soldier Millions. Milhais was in charge of one of their Lewis guns on 9 April 1918. During “Operation Georgette”, when the German Army attacked his division, Milhais stood up with his Lewis machine gun and defeated, almost single handedly, two German assaults by laying down intense fire, leaving hundreds of Germans dead. He managed to cover the retreat of Portuguese and Scots alike despite coming under heavy attack himself. He fired in all directions and stayed at his post until he ran out of ammunition. His bravery under severe circumstances managed to convince the Germans that they were up against a fortified unit rather than just a single Portuguese soldier with a machine gun. Finally, the Germans decided to go around and Milhais found himself alone in the rear of the enemy lines where he stayed for three days almost without eating or drinking.

On the third day, Milhais, still carrying his Lewis, rescued a Scottish major from a swamp and the two reached Allied lines. Milhais was warmly welcomed but did not say anything about his experiences. It was through the officer he had helped reporting the story to the British HQ and several other testimonies that his deeds become known.

A few months later, Milhais again held back the Germans, standing alone with his Lewis gun and allowing a Belgian unit to retreat safely to a secondary trench without casualties. Both the British observers present in the scene and the Belgian commander included his action in their reports. Milhais was awarded the highest distinction of the Portuguese: the Order of the Sword and Tower and with the French Légion d’Honneur delivered on the battlefield before 15,000 allied soldiers. The bravery of Milhais in the battle of La Lys earned him the 4th Class of the Order of Tower and Sword of Value, Loyalty and Merit, the highest Portuguese decoration. The degree of “Knight of the Order of Military Tower and Sword” was created by Afonso V, later annulled, and later restored by King John VI, to reward “the value, the Loyalty and Merit”.

On July 15, 1918, the Order of Service of the Battalion published a commendation, given by Major Ferreira do Amaral, which described his action as having been worth a million men, hence the nickname by which he became known.

Not really, it gets tiresome. Sometimes it’s funny when it’s something as absurd as questioning the inherent awesomeness of monarchy but it’s sad sometimes to see facts, corrections and honest opinions on the bottom comments list. When it comes to things like outrage over peppers it’s just boring. Tomorrow it’ll be bananas, then it’ll be cars, then a tv show. The constant anger and outrage just becomes a blur after a while.

LOL, oh that is rich. You purposely manufacture the outrage. You posted a link to a story where children ended up in the hospital, and then followed it up with a sarcastic remark about how, “Somebody dropped their hotdog in the playground. It happens.”.

A few comments later, after several people have calmly pointed out how dangerous habanaero peppers can be, you triumphantly crow, “Pepper outrage!”.

Bravo! Who’s the performance art for?

The peppers thing may sound like a joke. But it’s not. Raw fresh Habaneros have so much capsicum (or capsaicin or whatever it is) that they are actually dangerous. Especially for dumb little kids who put everything in their mouth or their little sister’s hair and eyes.

Habanero “juice” is one of the main ingredients in organic pesticides. I use non-organic, non-lethal spray made from similar peppers to keep the squirrels from building houses (or nests?…whatever you call them) under the roof overhang on our house. I’m too much of a bleeding heart to shoot a squirrel just because he’s trying to live his life. But when they make noise I’ll tell the little varmints, “Get off my lawn and stop crawling up the side of my house.” And the way I “tell” them is with very hot pepper spray. You don’t have to spray it on them, just near where they build their cute little (but very noisy) vacation homes. They get the message and usually move next door.

Not looking out of the realm of possibility anymore. And considering the Main Labour under Miliband has said they will continue many of the austerity policies, along with the rising popularity of the UKIP, I think that if Scotland wants to keep the health care system, among most everything else, they should think about leaving.

Besides, the Nordic Council has said they would accept them immediately. And from that, there has been talk of a Nordic Union sometime in the next century.

I think even the Brits are tiring of it. Polls show a surprisingly high percent of the population there is indifferent or even opposed to the continued existence, pomp, and pageantry of the House of Windsor.

One of my guilty pleasures is a UK TV show called “Country House Rescue” where they take these huge country estates/castles, renovate them and make them financially stable businesses hosting weddings, making them tourist attractions, etc. I find the history, construction, restoration stuff interesting but I think the Brits like it because you get to see these families, who in some cases haven’t had to seek employment in several hundred years, working to give tours, serve snacks to tourists and guide children on scavenger hunts.
But the Brits are still a very class conscious society. The locals will volunteer to work for free in the estate and they’re often outright giddy to meet the lord or lady of the manor. It’s an odd relationship with their aristocracy.

139 palomino  Apr 8, 2014 10:04:30pm

re: #130 Chrysicat

Honestly, how is their pomp and pageantry any different than the modern Presidency’s?

Except that since they’re only heads of state and not of government, they might be able to take a little of the heat off their head of government…

If you could reduce the President to ‘just the first citizen’ again, it might make sense to condemn other countries’ royalty. But as long as both sitting and former Presidents need to be treated like royalty because if they don’t someone will take advantage of the lapse-of-security to eliminate them… :-(

Two things bug me about it. One, the presidency is earned and only for a short, clearly defined term. The royals, OTOH, didn’t work their way up to royals, they just won the genetic lottery.

Second, royal families perpetuate a class system that should be abolished everywhere. And they maintain their status for life, regardless of what they do. It’s all based on ancient notions of “divine right of kings”, which is inherently discriminatory towards the 99% of the population without noble blood.

It’s funny but as a socialist it’s humorous to see others perpetuate the biggest mistake we ever made - that you can do away with class, class envy and class warfare overnight. Here’s a hint - you can’t change human behavior. What you can do is direct it with carrots & sticks. Over a long enough period of time that _may_ create an evolutionary pressure but we humans have not been “civilized” long enough to know for sure. I think it was Warren Buffet who said, “Of course there’s class warfare in America. And my side’s winning, like we always have.”

He didn’t say this to be an arrogant dick. Instead he said it as a corrective response to the other uber-wealthy and many conservatives who see themselves as the victims of a class war unfairly waged by poor, working and middle class Americans. Buffet knows that’s Fox/Limbaugh/WSJ bullshit.

What kind of despair made this woman, mother of 3 and pregnant again, drive her van with her screaming kids into the ocean?

It wasn’t a sane outlook on her life or that of her kids. I’d almost bet hers is a religious household or she grew up that way since she claims to have heard “demonic voices” telling her what to do.

This same woman was involved in a fatal car crash in 2007. I expect she is one of many who “slip through the system” and don’t get the mental health treatment they need. It doesn’t appear she was treated very well by the father of her kids, either.

I had given up on Morning Joke, but I left my TV on MSNBC from Lawrence O’Donnell last evening, and when I turned it on this morning, Joke was up.

He was upset that Obama had the Women’s Equal Pay Day and had taken something important and politicized it to turn it into a bash-fest of the Republican’s. He was upset that because he said Obama knows the bill he signed will never go through the house and all it does is paint the Republicans in bad light in a important election year. Really Joe?

Ha!

He failed to mention that the entire time Obama has been in office the Republicans have politicized absolutely everything and have bashed Obama daily for political gain. The big difference? The Republicans do it everyday, every year…not just in election years. And, they do not seem to gain. I guess Joe is pissed because Obama is using it to give Democrats talking points for mid-term elections. Joe must think Obama shouldn’t be such a good politician, or something.

Joe, you reminded me why you are a complete ass and a piss-poor Republican excuse maker. May your ratings tank to the point you get booted from the show. Maybe it will be renamed Morning with Mika. But, hey…thanks for the reminder that you suck and there is no reason to watch.

Couple of takeaways from this:

1) This is why you do not use password aggregators like LastPass or its similars. An attacker only has to crack one link to get everything that you have.

2) Nothing is private on the internet. Nothing. It is not possible to stop data from being leaked. All it takes is time and dedication, and if the data is at all important, SOMEONE out there has the time and dedication.

3) Incidents like this are why we cannot allow companies to continue being lax about their security. The state of financial transaction cards (credit/debit) in the US is abysmal. For far too long we have allowed companies to be lazy about security and assume that passwords are enough. They are not. We are way, WAY past due for major security technology upgrades when it comes to dealing with sensitive information. The Invisible Hand doesn’t do anything until it gets stung by a large enough wasp, and that’s not good enough.

The real problem is that human beings are much more comfortable with a heavy class system than with a democracy/meritocracy. Our instincts are still those of apes. Apes organize themselves into troops, do what the alphas of the troop tell them to do and some conspire to become alphas themselves.

Democracy is a very complicated way of determining who the alphas are. This is the central problem of democracy. It requires constant thought and care, and despite the scientific name we’ve given our species, most humans don’t really care much for constant thought.

Alphas don’t care much for democracy for much the same reason. In a democracy alphas have to work all the time to maintain their position, and they could still fail. Under authoritarian systems alphas pretty much just have to show up to get their alpha power. This, to me, explains the Tea Party and their backers. They were people who used to just have to show up and now they might actually have to work to keep their power.

Democracy is unnatural which is both its strength and its weakness.

Stabbing rampage started as students were arriving. One student pulled a fire alarm once they saw what was happening, alerting authorities.

Not good at all, but the assailant is now in custody, so we’ll get some idea why he went on the rampage.

Thoughts and prayers to the families of those injured in the attacks (the injured range in age from 14 to 17). Four of those attacked were in serious enough condition to require airlifting to hospital in critical condition.

More details:

The injured students’ ages range from 14 to 17. Students are being treated at Allegheny General Hospital, Forbes Regional, UPMC East and UPMC Presbyterian.

Just before 7:15 a.m., a school resource officer asked for medical assistance at the school for a stabbing. The students were injured in several classrooms and in the hallways before the classes started, Mr. Stevens said.

Parents of the injured students are being contacted. Parents of other students are asked to go to Heritage Elementary, also in Murrysville, to pick up their children.

Police, emergency crews and school buses lined the entrance to the school this morning. A stretcher was loaded into an ambulance around 8:15 a.m.

We know that the National Security Agency has secret agreements with American telecommunications providers to tap into the Internet backbone. Users might have thought that the SSL encryption on websites such as Gmail and Facebook protected them from this kind of snooping. But the Heartbleed bug could allow the NSA to obtain the private keys needed to unscramble these private communications.

We don’t know for sure, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the NSA discovered the Heartbleed vulnerability before the general public did.

They all believe their gun porn fan fiction which tells them that being armed automatically makes a person a highly trained crack shot that can miraculously shoot the right person at the right time in the right place and be the hero of the story. It never occurs to them that any other outcome is even possible.

As I recall, there was someone with a gun at the Giffords shooting in Tucson. The guy immediately realized that it would have made things even worse to pull it out. That’s what the gun fuckers don’t get. An already chaotic situation is going to be made dozen times more chaotic by some fuckwit pulling a gun out.

Prez Stompy Foot has likely not considered the advisability of shooting at a perp while in a crowded high school hallway.

Perps don’t always stop bullets.

Someone else could get in the way.

A bullet can ricochet and hit an unintended target.

If I am not mistaken, in such situations, cops are taught not to fire at perps.

Such nuance is beyond most gun nuts, though.

You are mistaken: If a situation where someone is just attacking at random, police are taught to eliminate the threat quickly. If they have a reasonably clean shot they’ll take it.

TV and movies give the wrong impression. They are fiction, but gun nuts don’t discriminate reality from fantasy that well.

For example, I watching an NCIS: Los Angeles episode recently. The perp in this case was a vet with PTSD and was going to blow himself and the people around him up. The trigger was in his right hand. Agent Kenzie was in front of him, and Agents G and Sam behind him. Sam yelled, “Kenzie, elbow!” and crackshot Kenzie fires her handgun, neatly disabling (but not destroying) perp’s right arm. No BOOM.

Un real is tic.

But it saves the heroes from having to kill a veteran with PTSD, because that would be a major bummer. In real life, those agents would have shot first, and talked later. But that doesn’t make for adequate drama.

re: #190 Political Atheist

Neither dare admit the chaotic reality that violence brings.

The chaos is exactly the point. It’s why the gun porn fails miserably. None of the gun fetishists take the chaos into account. They assume that as soon as someone owns a gun and gets a concealed carry license that they’re immediately endowed with the same ability to read a situation and take the perfect shot as a Special Forces sniper.

It’s not that guns would make a situation better or worse. It’s that chaos and panic in the middle of a situation like this make just randomly pulling out a gun and shooting the attacker a bad idea. There are just too many variables in play for someone that doesn’t have the right training or experience.

Went home to get her head together, basically. There was a lot of drama at the end of the last season with her father and Vance’s wife being killed in a drive-by shootup of Vance’s home. Rogue Mossad agents were behind it all, including people Ziva trusted — the whole La Femme Nikita thing — so she quit NCIS and Mossad, sorta kinda broke up with Tony, and stayed in Israel.

I suppose she’ll turn up again in some guest role in the future. But I’m glad they’ve moved away from the NCIS-Mossad joint ops. Too repetitive.

I watch Justified for one reason — the love/hate relationship between Raylan Givens and Boyd Crowder. They are my favorite on screen old married couple, but with more guns. Haha.

I’m honestly expecting the series to end with the two of them caught in a Butch and Sundance moment where they’re both getting shot at from all sides. It would be a fitting end, IMO.

Albeit had the Democratic Leadership Council never existed, George H. W. Bush might well have won a second term despite it all. In doing so, they conflate 1992 with 2008.

What 1992 was really more like was 1976. The nation felt secure enough from external threat to be willing to elect a Democrat and the Republican incumbent was vulnerable, but it needed to be the right kind of Democrat. Bill Clinton, like Jimmy Carter, was the right kind of Dem: A Southern governor who could run as a centrist.

A left-liberal could not have won in 1992, and any moonbat who thinks otherwise is engaging in dishonest historical revisionism.

Basically, the point of those articles as far as this incident is concerned is that if the guy with a knife is close enough to you, he is going to be able to close with you and stab you before you can draw your gun. Me too. I started watching it in season 6 or 7, and liked the characters and the way the writers played them off each other. Revealing just a little bit of their backstory every few episodes was good, too. The science and detective work was halfway plausible, but the writers did resort to some typical, unrealistic tech tricks to get the stories wrapped up in 45 minutes. It’s TV, so what the hell?

I decided several months ago to use my iTunes account to catch up on all the episodes from season 1 to the current season. I still need to watch the two backpilot episodes in the JAG series to make my NCIS viewing complete.

This derpy wingnut is in San Angelo, Texas. WTF do the actions of a mayor in NC have to do with his life? Oh, wait — that mayor’s a Democrat, so of course it’s a fucking crisis that requires the fainting couch and smelling salts.

*sigh*

We were working for equal pay 40 yrs ago. As long as women consider their pay “secondary” or just “helping out”, as long as they don’t see themselves as primary breadwinners, until women get totally pissed off about the inequities in the work force not just in well paying jobs, but in the lowest paying ones (if they even stop seeing it as a “temporary” situation to be working)—if, if, if, and when, when, when—maybe women will get the nerve to walk off their jobs en masse and let the bosses fend for themselves.

The Ukranians’ best bet is to go slow and try to wait them out as much as possible; it doesn’t look like there’s a lot of local support for this sort of rebellion and the pro-Russian forces don’t look like they were hired for their patience or brains.

Like the Russian patriots who stormed the opera house in Kharkiv thinking it was the capitol building? Pro tip for the Russians: use a few locals, don’t import all of your thugs. The locals know their way around town.

Here’s Everything Women Could Buy if They Got Paid the Same as Men

policymic.com

“Another popular misconception is that women’s wages are increasing every year, when in fact the wage gap hasn’t budged since 2002. In fact, the workplace still looks like a lot like a typical Mad Men episode (minus the day drinking). The top jobs for women today are the same as they were in 1950: secretaries and administrative assistants, 96% of whom are women. Since equal pay was signed into law in 1963, average wages for women have only increased by 18 cents.”

You give the moonbats too much credit: Many of them are “Purity Above All Else” folks, for whom Obama’s acceptance of the need for covert operations since becoming president is simply proof of the “corruption of the political mainstream”. Moonbats don’t typically use ‘DINO’, which is the Democratic equivalent of ‘RINO’, but their words make it clear they feel BETRAYED!!!11 by Obama since he took office.

He’s still not ‘left-liberal,’ and I think you know that.

In any other than the age of the deranged conservatives that we’re currently in, he’d be considered a solid Centrist. But thanks to deranged conservatives, any rational assessment of Obama’s political orientation has been thoroughly obliterated.

And I think you probably know that, too.

I see everyone is talking about cops in TV shows always having to whip out the gunnery and shoot’em’up those bad guys. How about the reverse happening in the old days of TV?

Sarge in Combat was shot every weekly episode by a “kraut” (politically incorrect TV of mid 60s) and was back for the battle by the next week. Oh, yeah some were just a scratch, nick or powder burn, but Vic Morrow’s character “Sarge” didn’t let some measly old bullet stop him from taking out the next Nazi search party or stopping an advancing German division with his trusty Thompson while waiting for the backups!

Does this mean that I should avoid all online transactions, e-mail, social media for the near future, until the site or service indicates they’ve applied the patch? Do I need contact every site and service I use to confirm this?

This 32-Year-Old Florida Woman Is Dead Because Her State Refused To Expand Medicaid

Charlene Dill, a 32-year-old mother of three, collapsed and died on a stranger’s floor at the end of March. She was at an appointment to try to sell a vacuum cleaner, one of the three part-time jobs that she worked to try to make ends meet for her family. Her death was a result of a documented heart condition — and it could have been prevented. Dill was uninsured, and she went years without the care she needed to address her chronic conditions because she couldn’t afford it.
Under the health reform law, which seeks to expand coverage to millions of low-income Americans, Dill wasn’t supposed to lack insurance. She was supposed to have access to a public health plan through the law’s expansion of the Medicaid program. But Dill, a Florida resident, is one of the millions of Americans living in a state that has refused to accept Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion after the Supreme Court ruled this provision to be optional. Those low-income people have been left in a coverage gap, making too much income to qualify for a public Medicaid plan but too little income to qualify for the federal subsidies to buy a plan on Obamacare’s private exchanges.

If you can avoid online transactions for the moment it is probably safest. Lastpass has a tool to check if the site in question is vulnerable or not so you can check your site there and if it is safe go ahead and change your password.

Eisenhower was a left-liberal compared to Obama. Look at the Big Government programs he supported, and the tax rates the sacred rich paid.

Other than social issues, Obama could pass as a moderate Republican today (if there still was such a thing) and would have fit perfectly into the GOP, pre-Reagan.

So an update on my interviews yesterday. I ended up settling on a pencil skirt and heels and short sleeved blouse. Dressy-ish, but not full on business suit. My feet and legs hurt like hell when it was all over and I was home, but it was worth it. They weren’t kidding about the casual office, though. Every person I saw had some variation of the hipster uniform of jeans and a cardigan on. Lots of people in Chucks, even among the women. I’d definitely have no problem with this. I’d be comfortable at least. Hah.

The first part was a conversation/interview with two of the senior research analysts I’d be working with. The third one is on maternity leave until next week, but I guess they figured that meeting two out of three ain’t bad. That was mostly an informal getting to know you conversation, and it went pretty well. They both seemed to like me, which is good.

The second part was a face to face conversation with the hiring VP that I spoke to a few weeks back. When we first met, he asked if I’d seen my grad school classmate who also works at the company. I said no, that I’d arrived for the interview and figured I’d see her on my way out. He then took me to her cubicle to say hi to her first, which I’m taking as a good sign. He made it clear that the position won’t be glamorous and will have moments of eyeball sporking tedium, but I told him I was going in eyes open, and that I was willing to work. We got along, I think. We had a pretty easy exchange.

The last part was a simple test of my research and Excel skills. I flew through the research bit, and the senior analyst who was supervising me even called it early. She said I’d proven I knew what I was doing. The Excel part had me figuring out that their instructions were impossible to complete the way they were written. You could do most of the exercises easily, but the last part wasn’t possible. I went back to the start with the default document and showed her step by step where the problem was. I’m pretty sure it was an unspoken test, since it’s such an obvious thing that they would’ve known. I walked out with her telling me she thought I was awesome and that I understood the role and what they were looking for. She also said she really liked me and that she’d put in a good word.

Now all that’s left is a phone interview on Thursday. If that guy likes me I could well end up with a job soon. :D

You totally missed my point.

The court gave them the right of an injunction against the law which would prevent them from operating fraudulently. The court, in effect, said, We know you’re violating the law, but go ahead and continue to do it. The court didn’t have to grant them an injunction.

That. Is. So. Wrong.

Of course, there isn’t even a disingenuous comment about concern for the victims to be seen.

Well, I applied for the job about a month ago and there were a couple of weeks where I didn’t hear anything at all because I assume they were screening other candidates. I’d say that a month long process is about par for the course these days once you actually get a bite.

And honestly? Anything beats unemployment. It would be a job that’s relevant to my MBA with a big company in an office where I could get by in jeans, flats, and a decent top, and with a short commute to work. Plus there’s the opportunity for growth since the VP told me that if the person in the role started to show initiative and could bring real input and ideas to the table, then the temporary part of the gig could become more. That’s HUGE incentive for me to deal with the eyeball sporking tedium upfront. I hate being out of work, and if I could grow in the company that would be awesome.

I used to pass a clinic on my way to work every day when I was a teacher. Wednesday mornings were fetus poster days. There were also women standing in the lot (clinic defense volunteers) to help patients get through without being hassled. I’d stop a block early and buy coffee for the defense crew and then cross the picket line to give them their coffee. Then I’d walk back through the protesters calling them “stupid motherfuckers.” Made me feel like I was doing something positive.
