Onion Exclusive: Biologists Confirm God Evolved From Chimpanzee Deity

Gotta love it when The Onion trolls creationists: Biologists Confirm God Evolved From Chimpanzee Deity.

BERKELEY, CA—Challenging long-held views on the origins of divinity, biologists at the University of California, Berkeley, presented findings Thursday that confirm God, the Almighty Creator of the Universe, evolved from an ancient chimpanzee deity.

The recently discovered sacred ancestor, a divine chimp species scientists have named Pan sanctorum, reportedly gave rise over millions of years to the Lord Our God, Maker of Heaven and Earth.

“Although perhaps not obvious at first glance, there are actually overwhelming similarities between the Supreme Being of today and this early primate deity who preceded Him,” said Dr. Richard Kamen, a leading biologist who also heads Berkeley’s paleotheology department. “The holy chimp moved around on all fours, but its descendants eventually began walking upright to expend less energy while foraging across the infinite reaches of the universe. This of course led to the bipedalism of modern-day God.”

Nice touch at the end:

He added, “It is our understanding that these creatures lived in a kind of jungle-like forerunner to the Garden of Eden, until a day came when their enraged creator cast them out, flinging feces at them as they fled.”

Off topic, but about humor. If Colbert is moving to late night, could they give Jamie Oliver his own show? He’s the best on The Daily Show right now. I’d like to see what he could do on his own.

So Mr. Cantor, if we accept your premise that Obamacare is impossible to make work, then I suppose we should go with something from the opposite side of the political spectrum, such as single payer or Medicare for all.

After all, Obamacare is basically a Heritage Foundation idea put forth in the 90s as an alternative to “socialized medicine”.

Scientists grow viable vaginas from girls’ own cells

Four young women born with abnormal or missing vaginas were implanted with lab-grown versions made from their own cells, the latest success in creating replacement organs that have so far included tracheas, bladders and urethras.

Follow-up tests show the new vaginas are indistinguishable from the women’s own tissue and have grown in size as the young women, who got the implants as teens, matured.

All four of the women are now sexually active and report normal vaginal function. Two of the four, who were born with a working uterus but no vagina, now menstruate normally. […]

HHS Sebelius is resigning. She’d been at HHS since President Obama took office in 2009. Not surprising that she’s resigning at this juncture; ACA is launched, and turned out to be successful in reaching millions of uninsureds despite all the foulups with the launch.

If this was a horrible law and an impossible task to make the ACA work, then it speaks volumes about her success. Yes, Majority Whip Cantor, it’s successful.

Millions who had no health insurance now have affordable insurance, and millions more are getting health insurance coverage via Medicaid expansion.

The GOP opposes both. They’d rather see millions go without insurance at all than admit that they’ve been on the wrong side of history.

The GOP wants people to think that they’ve got an alternative to the ACA, but running the numbers finds that it will insure fewer people and cost even more - the epitome of a nonstarter. It’s vaporware, but it’s all the GOP has, because their leadership will have to admit that they can’t repeal ACA anytime soon. Not in 2014. Not in 2015. Not in 2016, and the earliest will be 2017, and by then it’s quite likely that the ACA will be so successful that no one will want to touch it except as to expand coverages further (expand Medicaid to those states that didn’t, and to expand the income levels to pick up a greater share).

Of course, the Tea Party hacks will want to burn it to the ground.

In the meantime, the President will have to nominate a successor, so watch the GOP do all it can to thwart the nomination/confirmation process. Or, they’ll tie the confirmation to another issue (like debt ceiling or spending on health care) to get their way.

Democratic control of the Senate should at least ensure that the raw footage from the confirmation hearings include rational thought as well as wingnut drivel.

IMO, the Democrats should make the GOP own their “repeal Obamacare” by going after the GOP on how wonderful it was for the insurance companies to play games with pre-existing conditions etc. etc.

Obamacare May Cut Auto Insurance Rates, Study Says

Obamacare may lower the cost of car insurance. A new study from the respected RAND Corporation says the price of several different types of coverage, including business liability, workers’ compensation and auto insurance may be reduced.

That’s because those policies often pay for treating injured people who don’t have medical coverage.

The Affordable Care Act has increased the share of people covered by private health insurance and Medicaid. The changes “can generate potential cost changes as high as 5 percent or more in particular states and insurance lines,” says the RAND report.

Now, extensive testing by professors from Columbia, Harvard, and MIT in the fields of electrical engineering, chemistry, and biology has found no indications that it is a modern forgery, per an article by King published today in the Harvard Theological Review.

It’s a headline on every news website. She’s been HHS Secretary since 2009. She’s been responsible for planning and execution of Obamacare from the very beginning which is a gigantic responsibility in itself. Do you really not understand why this is huge news?

You’re saying it is huge news because Obamacare has reached the point where it is self sustaining and no longer needs her help to be sucessful?

91 freetoken  Apr 10, 2014 7:05:35pm

The reboot of Cosmos has garnered a great deal of attention, no doubt due to the Murdoch empire’s tremendous marketing machine and global content delivery systems.

Yet I find it mostly empty of science. It’s fine as platform for “awe”, but teaches very little in each episode.

On the other hand, the first episode of Your Inner Fish contains more substance. It too has gotten some press, but no where near as much as Cosmos.

The above link allows one to watch the entire episode. Recommended. Kind of squeamish about the cadavers, but that’s biology for you.

Both of my daughters really like Cosmos. They probably aren’t getting too technical in order for more people to watch it. If it’s purpose is to generate more interest in science it’s doing its job in this house with both of my daughters.

I have been enjoying the show. Loved this last one about light. I like the styled animation to deal with the historical scientific figures and the lessons they taught later generations. I get what you are after but would significantly thicker science run down the ratings? Unfortunately so perhaps.

I’d like to see it taken up some too. Programming that good is rare enough I think I’m making allowances.

My own two cents: Even though the Obamacare system is working better now than it did at first, there is still the fact that the implementation went sideways while Kathleen Sebelius was in charge. But at the time, Obama didn’t want to add fuel to the fire by engaging in an ugly confirmation fight (this was before the change in filibuster rules, remember), so he let Sebelius stay at her post for the time being.

Now, with most of the website bugs worked out, Obamacare claiming some level of success, and Senate Republicans unable to filibuster an Obama cabinet nominee anymore, it is safe for Obama to have Sebelius resign and for him to nominate someone fresh for the post.

Depends on your level of knowledge for one thing, but also i think your expectation is slightly off. I don’t think Tyson, at the end of the show, wants everyone to be able to go “Here are the 20 facts I learned from Cosmos.” What he wants the viewers to do is ask questions. His history lessons have been very much about those who ask questions and those who punish people for asking questions.

No, because it really isn’t. She saw the implementation of the program through its first open enrollment period, in which expectations were met and even slightly exceeded. She succeeded in her task. So given that only one HHS Secretary in the entire history of the department has held the office for longer, how is her resignation in any way notable or out of the ordinary?

Your “analysis” deliberately ignores the fact that only Donna Shalala has exceed Sebelius for time served as HHS Secretary. Nobody other than those two women held the office beyond four years. So, after having succeeded the go to assumption would be that she’s tired of dealing with this shit.

Also, to put the rocky start in historical perspective, ACA is no different than Social Security, or Medicare parts A, B, C, or D. All programs that the Republicans hated, fought tooth and nail, and that the American people have come to support, in most cases overwhelmingly. The rocky start, in fact, was largely due to Republican intransigence at the state level, refusal of many red states to set up their own exchanges or take the Medicaid expansion money.

I know that feeling. Last time I refilled the pepper shaker, it was with a pepper much finer than I’m used to. Which has led to one too many over-peppering incidents.

I want to get some of the grinder mechanisms, try my hand at making pepper mills. I’ve GOT to get my shop set up again, I’m getting antsy not making things.

I heard that was good.

Not to be an enabler or anything.

“…The Samaipata raid on July 6 by Che’s men shocked the army
into launching two offensives against the guerrillas. The first,
“Operation Cynthia”, directed the Fourth Army Division from Camiri
to conduct operations south of the Rio Grande River (see map #3,
page 108). In early August the second offensive, “Operation
Parabano”, was initiated by the Eighth Army Division in the area
north of the river. The Fourth Division soldiers pursued Joaquin’s
group northward throughout the months of July and August, periodi-
cally clashing with the guerrillas. The “Cynthia” soldiers, however,
were denied the final victory when Joaquin’s band crossed the im-
posed boundary at the Rio Grande. Their counterparts of the Eighth
Division, waiting at the river, destroyed their prey at the El Vado
del Yeso ford.4”

Which is great, except the depth it’s probably sitting at makes recovery so daunting a challenge that it may be weeks before they drag it up.

They fixed the loot problems. Now I have a gaming problem.

I don’t know. Blizzard really pissed me off with their greed. When Diablo 3 came out it wasn’t just a massive disappointment, it was an egregious virtual donkey punch to the soul of gaming. I’m still not sure I’m ready to forgive.

I don’t know why this is breaking news. They’ve been saying this for days. Until they actually find the plane being confident means nothing.

It’s the usual bit of keeping it in the news. First it was “We’re getting pings,” then it was “We’ve lost the pings, but still searching,” then “found the pings again, but must now confirm.” And now it’s “We’re confident the pings are what we’re looking for, but stay tuned because we may change our minds again.”

I have two sets of homemade salt and pepper shakers. One of the things my father made while playing with his big lathe. Lots of small wood and turned aluminum objects around the family from that.

CNN has been using that idea for over a month. If they don’t find the plane before the pings end CNN will have the entire summer all set.

And they should be able to drag out reporting on the salvage work for at least two years.

They can do a joint special with Fox News: “The MH370 - Benghazi Connection”.

/Sorta kidding, but they’d do it.if they could make money off of it.

I really do wish she’d tried to hold out til next year, because this is the sort of thing that the GOP really didn’t need an election year confirmation hearing where they can use the soapbox it affords them to rail against the ACA and parade it’s “failures” before voters. You can be sure that they’ll be making various impossible demands of her, such as trying to extract promises of “no more delays” or “no funding for abortion.”

I disagree with you entirely. We’ve used the nuclear option for nominations, so the R’s can’t filibuster. OTOH, there’s a disturbingly good chance that ‘wait ‘til after the election’ gives us ‘oh, wait, now you can’t go anywhere until after the new President takes office, because I’m looking at a Repug senate majority and there’s no way anyone left of Rand Paul is getting through for any office.’
Yes, the Rs may try to make hay—they may even succeed. But simple math says the Rs get a majority in both houses next year no matter what. That majority may be as much as 57-43.
