3 Confirmed Dead in Shootings at Overland Park Kansas Jewish Sites - Updated

The Jewish Community Center is right behind the Sprint campus where I used to work; this appears to be a hate crime from initial reporting. Initial reports also said 2 dead, but a subsequent report from CBS sets the tally at 1 death. NBC local news reports three are now confirmed dead; one died at Overland Park Regional Medical Center while undergoing surgery for critical injuries.

I will caution all my readers that initial reports at a shooting like this are usually not wholly accurate, and the most accurate account will likely come at the 5PM central news conference. Several local station streaming links are below.

Police said they are investigating fatal shootings at the Overland Park Jewish Community Center and at an assisted living center several blocks south.

Police said they are investigating fatal shootings at the Overland Park Jewish Community Center and at an assisted living center several blocks south.

Police said one person was killed at the Jewish Community Center at 5800 W. 115th Street and another was killed at Village Shalom, an assisted living facility at 123rd Street and Nall.

A third person was shot and critically injured. That person was taken to a nearby hospital.

Investigators said the entire Jewish Community Center campus has been placed on lockdown while police search the area.

Update from KCTV5:

One shooting was reported about 1 p.m. Sunday at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, according to an Overland Park Fire Department spokesman. This happened at the Lewis and Shirley White Theatre inside the center.

About 75 people were inside the theatre, most of them children.

Teens were auditioning for KC Superstar and parents were frantically trying to get to their children.

A second shooting was reported at Village Shalom, which is an assisted living center at 5500 West 123rd St.

Having armed lunatics wandering the streets in every city in the nation is just the price of defending FREEDUM against a tyrannical government.

Unbelievable. Right before Passover no less. Thoughts and prayers go out to those affected. It would appear to be motivated by anti-Semitism, as a suspect was apparently led away shouting anti-Semitic slurs.

Police arrrested the suspected shooter outside Valley Park Elementary nearby by 2:45 p.m. He reportedly made anti-semitic statements as he was led away.

The victims were killed in gunfire at the center at 5801 W. 115th Street and the Village Shalom senior living facility 5500 W. 123rd St. about 1 p.m.

The gunfire at the west side of the Jewish Community Center came as hundreds of high school singers from across the metro area were expected to audition for the KC SuperStar contest and actors were rehearsing for a production of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

“There were tons of kids because this was about to start at 1 o’clock,” said Ruth Bigus, the publicist for KC SuperStar.

First shooting started at the JCC before moving to the senior center.

‘Nazi’ Gunman Singled Out Jews for Death in Suburban Kansas City Rampage - Forward.com

A smirking gunman who reportedly shouted Nazi slogans opened fire at a Jewish community center and an old-age home in a suburb of Kansas City, killing three people.

The gunman, said to be an older man, singled out Jewish victims for death, Rabbi Herbert Mandl, a chaplain with the Overland Park Police Department, told CNN.

“Asking someone if you are Jewish before shooting sounds very much like a hate crime,” Mandl said.

Three people were killed, the Associated Press reported, quoting authorities.

Police said two people were killed at the JCC of Greater Kansas City, where children were auditioning for a musical, KMBC TV reportedkan

A third person was shot at Village Shalom, an assisted living facility.

Mandl said one of the victims at the JCC was a teenage boy. The victim at the retirement home was an elderly woman who was shot as she walked out of Village Shalom, he said.

Multiple reports said police arrested a suspect nearby, who was overheard shouting ‘Heil Hitler’ as he was taken into custody.

“I have been told he was yelling ‘Heil Hitler’ as he was being led away,” Mandl told CNN.

How many fucking times does this have to happen before the ASSHOLES in Congress finally pass laws that mandate proper screening before just handing someone a gun? Maybe guns should be allowed into Congress ,hell let everyone have one, from lobbyists to the casual visitor. Why the hell not if guns are so special and wonderful?

Frum’s a conservative. But he’s Canadian. As such, he doesn’t feel firearms in his blood the way American conservatives do. He believes in at least some gun control, including simple things like expanded background checks.

I actually like Frum. He seems far more honest than the average Fox commentator or talk radio blowhard. He’s more pragmatic, less ideological. For this he’s castigated as a RINO, despite his views on foreign policy and economics, which mostly line up with GOP orthodoxy.

ALL of them allow their dogs to run loose in the parks where we sometimes get together to walk our dogs. Except me. For one, I don’t trust my girl to not run off, she has what we call “selective hearing”. She’s well trained, but she also has issues with anxiety (she was abused as a baby before we rescued her, it’s been a long road back) and has been known to snap at dogs she doesn’t know. Also, there’s a freaking leash law.

I’ve asked all my friends to keep their dogs on leash so my dog doesn’t lose her shit when we walk. We’ve stopped going to the parks with them, because quite honestly, it’s stressful and a waste of time for me. I can’t socialize with anyone while my dog loses her mind because her dog buds can run free. None of them will comply saying”well, my dog always listens to me and obeys my commands”. I’m seriously considering calling animal control and telling them to watch out for these people at these parks. Am I being an asshole if I do that? Drive-by: My irony meter just exploded. The Nazi asshole looking for Jews to kill and smiling as he was taken away by police? Two of the three people he murdered were Methodists.

Three dead, man arrested in shootings at Johnson County Jewish centers

Two of the victims were a 14-year-old boy and his grandfather who attend the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, said church spokeswoman Cathy Bien.

The Rev. Adam Hamilton, the church’s senior pastor, shared the news with church members at the beginning of the evening Palm Sunday service. He said he had been talking to the victims’ family in the hours after the shooting, and they asked him to go through with the Sunday evening worship service. […]

Matt Davis was shopping for bar mitzvah suits with his son when he heard about the shooting at the Jewish Community Center, where his daughter was dancing. He headed to the center and saw the suspect, a heavyset man in handcuffs, being arrested at the school nearby. The man was smiling.

“I was wondering why is the guy smiling when he’s being arrested,” Davis said. […]

And I know, yeah, this is just me being a Debbie Downer on the issue, but like I’ve written about before, one of my best friends in high school died in a car accident. The accident was bad enough to make the front page of the paper the next day. Fortunately I found out when a friend called - and then did my part to continue the phone chain, so that people actually heard the news via a friend and not without any warning - and before it showed up in the paper.

There’s no easy way to hear news like that, but bad as that phone call was, I think finding out via Twitter would have been worse.

We don’t even know how he got the damn gun! Background checks can only do so much and if the person hasn’t been found mentally defective or been convicted of a felony or domestic violence crime then the check is going to clear him.

The government cannot deny someone a background check clearance simply because they are a Nazi, no more that in they were a Communist.

Yes. So ask if they’ll consider going to one of the dog parks every so often so yours can run free. I have one who when off his leash won’t go more than two feet away from me. The other one we have, if he’s left off he’ll end up in Ohio!

I’m seriously considering calling animal control and telling them to watch out for these people at these parks. Am I being an asshole if I do that? These women are actually proud of doing this (they also don’t clean up their dog’s shit either).

I guess you can politely ask them to clean up after their dogs in any case. And point out that other people use the area and don’t really need to encounter dog feces while they’re there to enjoy the park themselves.

Not true. The American Civil War was just that, a civil war, not a revolution. It was an attempt by most of the slave states to break away in order to protect their “right” to own other people as property.

Kindly define the difference between a revolution and a civil war for me?

So far it mostly seems to be which side wins. Successful breakaway: revolution. Smacked back into place: civil war.

re: #89 sattv4u2

Our dog parks are overcrowded and a mess. In fact, that’s where we all met about 3 yrs ago. Only one of us still goes, my dog freaks out around large numbers of dogs, some mornings there’s upwards of 30 dogs in the big dog side alone. We have two dog park choices and both are awful. About two yrs ago my dog got sliced open by a wire sticking out of the chain link fence. 500 dollar surgery to repair an 8 inch laceration that went into her abdominal cavity. So, um no, we’re done with dog parks.

The issue wasn’t dogs defecating (and there was no mention if her friends do or do not pick up after their dogs ,,,, we do whether we’re in the “dog park” or regular park, btw)
The issue was all the other dogs are free to run and hers is confined to the leash, with hers going nuts ( “lose her shit”) trying to run off to play with the others

Discovered that my loss of “radio” from iTunes is not unique. All of us on the old operating system lost them from our old yet final version of iTunes.

Why did Apple do that? The urls are still working - over time I added a few to playlists and they are still there and working. Only the ability to browse a list of stations under “Radio” doesn’t work.

It’s not a big issue to search the internet for m3u streams to add to iTunes (I put them in the playlist “internet songs”), but still, it seems so weird that Apple would make their iTunes server/directory stop sending Radio lists to old player users.

OT:

All of my friends are dog people. So am I. I love their doggies as much as I love my own. I have a dilemma.

Reduction in HPV in young women in England seen, following national immunization program

David Mesher, Public Health England, presenting the work at the conference, said: “This study provides an early indication that the national HPV immunisation programme is successfully reducing vaccine-type HPV infections in sexually active young women in England, and also suggests herd-immunity may be benefiting non-vaccinated young women and men.

“The data provide reassurance that the high efficacy against HPV infection in women reported in clinical trials can be effectively realised in practice, and in a programme achieving high coverage amongst young females. These data adds to our confidence that the HPV immunisation programme will achieve its aim of reducing cervical cancer.”

Exactly. Even the best trained dog in the world (and trust me, these dogs, while sweet, are not super well trained) can mess up or have a bad day. So will it take one of them hurting a kid or another dog before my friends get a clue?

I walk my dog 2-4 miles every day(unless the weather interferes) on a leash. We have a path we take in our neighborhood and we’ve developed a routine over the last year. For me as much as the dog. I’ve had two experiences with lost dogs running around free, one I had to spray with a canister of citronella I carry with me because it charged us. The other was across the road and I was scared it would try to cross the street and get hit by a car.

I don’t know, it just pisses me off they do this and think it’s just fine. Along with not cleaning up after their animals.

If you’re going to split hairs you can say it wasn’t the primary focus of her concern, but to say it was added by klys is simply incorrect—all she was doing in her #98 was highlighting that when you told FFL he was wrong in your #94 it was actually you who was wrong there also.

No, let me be fair. I want it conceptually. I can’t use google glass as designed - and I got a solid view of the problems.

I am near-sighted with astigmatism. I am 54, and as is typical for the over-50 crowd I have presbyopia.

The normal solution for the latter is bifocals. The location of the google glass, however, means that that particular section needs a differently ground lens. In addition to the bottom half being ground for close and the top for far, there needs to be a special ‘very close’ grind in the upper center of the lens with the gglass. It’s an expensive grind, and if you add astigmatism it’s a complex and more expensive grind.

And it creates a blurry spot in your right eye when looking at something far away. That’s a nuisance at best, a safety hazard at worst. (If you wear glasses you can get the same effect with attachable ‘jeweler’ lenses. Line one up at the top of your right eye, and remember you cannot ever swing it out of the way when you’re driving or talking or anything else.)

I want what it can do. It’s a good thing I have some ideas about alternatives because I can’t use Gglass.

My husband used to work for one of those big software companies, and he’s talked about one of the presentations he went to for someone who wore a camera that took video or pictures or something like that every some odd-interval, essentially documenting his life, for over a year.

There were some cool things out of that - he had video/photos/I can’t remember which from when he first met the woman who became his wife, for example.

On the flip-side, I have some privacy concerns about things like that that I’m still concerned aren’t adequately addressed.

My current two don’t do “cat ball”. They don’t get along that well. The two Siamese, being brothers, cuddled together all the time. And both of them would pile into the cat bed and somehow squeeze in.

My two are litter mates. They forgot to do the resemblance thing. One is part Manx, the other is part Siamese. There were 2 orange ones in the litter too.

re: #162 freetoken

Yes, but midget sex isn’t my thing.

Ok, maybe I’m fixating a bit, but like with DaVinci’s Demons, I suspect a non-trivial portion of these cable programs’ reason for existence is boobage.

GoT has also had scenes of male anatomy, too, though not as much as boobage. I’m only in season 1, episode 7 so far, but I’ve counted three nude male scenes, two with full frontal views and — well, I lost count — quite a few nude female scenes. (These are not including one scene with two small kids taking baths outside). There have been several simulated sex scenes, too, including one offscreen male-on-male blow job and a “training session” for two hookers with one pretending to be the man.

I’m not sure whether the sex and nudity is necessary for the plot, but none of it bothers me. I guess I’ve acquired a more European sensibility about cinema over the years.

The violence, on the other hand, is subdued, compared to some movies I’ve seen. There’s blood and some close-ups of wounds, but it’s not excessive. I’ve seen worse watching NCIS and CSI.

I would suspect PETA would be upset with Episode 7, which has a long scene with the senior Lannister butchering an elk or buck while talking world domination with his eldest son. It looked like a real animal, and the actor seemed to know what he was doing. If it was faked, it was very well done.

and most cash registers didn’t really have a slot for them… same as the various incarnations of the dollar coins. I’d like to see us go to strictly a dollar coin and a 2 dollar bill. But I’m funny like that.

FWIW, I somehow got a .02 Cent (EURO) coin today. Thought it was a penny at first.

Since the SPLC says he was a long-time “raging anti-Semite” and was shooting people at identifiably Jewish places, I’m gonna assume he was specifically trying to kill Jews.

I doubt he’d be especially remorseful on finding out he’d killed a couple of Methodists. In his mind the justification might be something along the lines of, “Well if they hadn’t been hanging around with Jews, they wouldn’t be dead.”

Met a guy a couple of years ago who, at Christmas time, had his bank get him $500 in two dollar bills. He said he used $2 bills for all his Christmas shopping. Wanted to give everyone something unusual to talk about over the Holidays.

It may or may not be necessary to the plot, but it’s absolutely essential to the characterization. Danarys, Arya, Sansa, Catelyn and Cersei have the most character growth, they’re under the most strain throughout events, and women’s position in the world they live in needs to be always in your mind while you’re watching their choices.

re: #243 FemNaziBitch

(Sorry for late posting this thread, missed these when I came back and saw a new thread.)

I think gargoyling or borging or augmenting is going to become ‘normal’ within a decade. It’s a lot like the cell-phone. For a LOOOONG time they were hard to get, hard to use, expensive, and most people looked at them and couldn’t see the appeal. (Even though there were people out there telling what the appeal was - and they turned out to be right.)

Then everything came together, to the point where it’s those who do not have them that are seen as unusual. The big deal is that you’re never out of contact. The (sorta) humor line I use is: it kills a plot point (major or minor) in almost every movie of the 20th century. (Pick a movie and ask “Why aren’t they using their cell phone?” But I digress.

Privacy is an issue. At the same time what I think of privacy is different from what my parents did which is different from what my daughter does. We’re going to see court cases clarify it. Then as these things become more common - and especially as they flip the ‘everybody has one’ divide - we’ll revisit several of those court cases.

The ‘big competition’ to the Gglass is ‘full screen viewers’. There are a couple of options, and for a while they’re going to be the “more useful but a lot stupider looking” option. (VR goggles with good cameras in line with eyes to allow computer graphics to overlay reality. There are some things that would work today with a bit of programming.) Both these and Gglass come with audio. The full screen could come with smell’o’vision (remember the bacon alarm clock?).

There’s too much easy and good use for these already; they’re going to come. As typical, they’re coming from “fun/play” and then people go “Hey, I can use this in XYZ business.”

Oh, and just for the squick factor, I keep waiting to see someone cross the porn boundary with a $5000 device. See, in addition to sight and sound there’s this suit, this glove, and this platform - each from different places - that basically solve a lot of tactile between them.

re: #200 FemNaziBitch

Just to clear this up, REALLY late to the party, both issues are the problem. I did NOT edit the first post either, at all.

I’m not comfortable with people letting their dogs run loose in a public space that’s not a dog park. We have leash laws here, and they seem to think the law doesn’t apply to them because their dogs are good dogs. I can assure you if a dog they didn’t know was running loose where they were, they would have a fit. These are not small dogs either, two are really large Goldens and one is a Doberman. Again, I love these dogs, they’re sweet and lovable, but that isn’t the issue. Even IF my dog didn’t lose it over not being able to run loose with her buddies I still wouldn’t let her off leash. It’s not cool for a whole host of reasons. Which is kinda why the law exists in the first place. The only way they’ll knock it off is to get caught and fined. And I can call anonymously and report them, I’ve just been debating on if I should or not.

The poop thing bugs me as a secondary issue, I’ve even seen one of them bag the poop and then toss the bag into the tall grass at the park (this one was a National Park Service property). Instead of carrying it back to the entrance and tossing it in the trash. Again, not cool. People around here have more money than sense, the condition of our dog parks is a prime example of the mindset here. They’re a mess and as I mentioned above, my dog was seriously hurt at one park due to a lack of anyone giving a shit including the county.
