In Which Glenn Greenwald Smears Me by Citing a Faked Graphic at a Far Right Hate Site

Prize-winning journalism
Weird • Views: 45,305

It’s been almost a week since I wrote anything about the Mighty Glenn Greenwald, but it seems the Mighty G has been thinking of me, despite the wonderful awards he’s been receiving, because today he tweeted a link to the blog run by the extreme right wing Muslim-hating weirdos who’ve been stalking me online for more than seven years.

The giveaway that Greenwald’s tweet was aimed at me is pretty clear — all you have to do is read that blog. It’s entirely dedicated to non-stop hatred of yours truly, with all kinds of genocide-advocating hate speech and violent rhetoric everywhere. The people who hang out there are the absolute bottom of the Internet barrel; many of them were banned from LGF for doing exactly what you see them doing at their new home. And they have been relentlessly stalking, harassing and concocting hateful conspiracy theories about not just me, but anyone who posts at LGF or communicates with me on Twitter, for years.

When my friend George Duke died, they went to websites with articles about George and posted disgusting comments pretending to be me. These are the people Greenwald is linking to.

This is also the blog that conspired with another Greenwaldian hero, Barrett Brown, to out my private emails, along with anti-Muslim hate group leader Pamela Geller. After Brown decided to start hating me, he hung out extensively at this website.

And it’s the blog that has posted numerous videos and articles denying the genocide committed by Serbians against Muslims, and once posted a video praising the infamous racist book The Turner Diaries that inspired terrorist Timothy McVeigh.

And the graphic Greenwald wants you to look at is a fake — an altered version of a Think Progress graphic showing Norwegian anti-Muslim terrorist Anders Breivik’s citations of right wing writers and organizations in his “manifesto.” The altered graphic, to which they added my name in a very deceptive manner, with a bright green bar to make sure you didn’t miss it:

And the actual graphic that appeared at Think Progress, which does not have my name in it, of course:

Notice the difference? Here they are side by side. Maybe that “StinkProgress” logo should have been a red flag?

If you actually read Breivik’s sick manifesto, you’ll discover that he clearly hated me and considered me a “traitor” to his deranged “cause,” and included numerous articles from anti-Muslim bloggers attacking and vilifying me. For example:

And not only that; all of the “citations” Greenwald attempts to attribute to Breivik are actually contained in blog posts written by other authors, mostly “Fjordman.” The fact is that Breivik himself never wrote a single word about me or about LGF.

To really drive home the point about the kinds of sources this Pulitzer Prize-winning “journalist” believes are credible, here are some past LGF posts about the “Diary of Daedalus” stalking site; I usually ignore them, but this case is so egregious it had to be answered.

If anyone is tempted to doubt this was an attack by Greenwald against me, please note that the post he’s linking to is titled “Will Johnson Apologize to Geller and Spencer?”

The answer to that question is the same as it’s always been. Fuck no.

Haven’t been to DoD for a long while. This is maybe the 3rd time I’ve wandered over there.

Wow. It’s really creepy, in a “Dude, you need to see a psychiatrist about this unhealthy obsession” kind of way.

Again, just so I’m clear: DoD was founded because the site’s author or authors were banned here, and they now devote a huge amount of their personal time trying to prove… trying to destroy…

Shit. I’ve got nothing.

I’m not sure what’s worse: the fact that this guy is so Fatal Attraction about LGF, or that it’s poorly done.

The people who run that stalker site originally started a site called “littlegreenfootballs2 .com,” and blatantly stole every post I wrote and reposted it there, for several months.

That little group of psychos has tried to register over and over and over at LGF (probably hundreds of times by now), in order to steal content, spy on our users, and other kinds of sick stalker behavior. They’ve tried to get my Paypal account shut down, and have actively worked to cause harm to me for years.

Charles Johnson,

Greenwald Isn’t a very good journalist. He ought to be ashamed off himself. I once had a lot of respect for him, not anymore. I wonder if he’ll even attempt to do anything to save face after this. The guy appearently didn’t even bother to check his source, it just supported his thesis, so he used it, very sloppy.

Apologize for what? Calling out Islamophobia and hatred? Calling out racism, and purveyors of hate? You have absolutely nothing to apologize for, and the hate-right crowd was justifiably banned for abusing their privileges here and promoting hate here. They still can’t get over the fact that that you’re still an insignificant blogger and someone who’s called them out for what they are and what they represent.

Your insignificance vexes them so. They are vexed. Especially Greenwald, who once again shows that he’s an awful journalist who doesn’t even understand researching your source materials to check accuracy. He falls into the same morass the rest of the right wing echo chamber has done, accepting information as true because it confirms a particular view. In Greenwald’s case, it’s even more egregious because he’s not a reporter or a journalist, but an opinionist who will say and do anything to further his agenda, including smearing those who call him out for it.

A laughable idea, to be sure. Apologizing to two fanatical hate-mongers who earn their bread and butter advocating the most flagrant bigotry?

Greenwald might as well suggest apologizing to Julius Streicher.

Mayor No Longer Wants To Discuss How Much He Agrees With Alleged Jewish Center Shooter

Clevenger told various outlets this week that while he doesn’t support the alleged deadly violence, he considered Miller to be a friend. He told television station KSPR that he “kind of agreed” with Miller and, indeed, seems to share the alleged gunman’s anti-Semitism.

He told KSPR that the country’s “false economy” is a byproduct of Jewish-run corporations and Jews who run the Federal Reserve. KSPR also unearthed a letter to the editor sent by Clevenger nearly a decade ago to a Missouri newspaper.

In the letter, Clevenger described himself as “a friend of Frazier Miller helping to spread his warnings.” He went on to decry the “Jew-run medical industry” and the “Jew-run government backed banking industry.”

Missouri Mayor Says He ‘Kind Of Agreed’ With Alleged Jewish Center Shooter

“He was always nice and friendly and respectful of elder people, you know, he respected his elders greatly. As long as they were the same color as him,” Clevenger said while laughing, according to television station KSPR. “Very fair and honest and never had a bit of problems out of him.”

Clevenger said he sympathized with some of Miller’s views, but didn’t like to broadcast that.

“Kind of agreed with him on some things but, I don’t like to express that too much,” Clevenger, the owner of a local repair shop, said.

One could also observe that Greenwald’s approach is a very traditional legal one, where the inquisitor (i.e., GG) knows all, and the only problem is how to make the target of the investigation confess to what the inquisitor already knows to be true.

Telling lies about what is happening can be an acceptable substitute for getting the confession, and is much easier to do.

There was a lot of really bad journalism and misleading stories on this one yesterday. Daily Beast is just about the only decent article I’ve seen so far
Was it Justice or Politics that Killled the NYPD Muslim Spy Unit?

An NYPD unit tasked with spying on the city’s Muslims was publicly killed Tuesday, just days after a ruling that upheld its legal basis. So what gives?

Ukraine military push appears to lose momentum in the east

Ukraine’s attempt to take back eastern towns from pro-Russian militants appeared to stall on Wednesday.

In Donetsk, six armored vehicles sent into the nearby city of Kramatorsk in the morning later showed up carrying Russian flags in Slaviansk.

Russian Ambassador to the EU Vladimir Chizhov told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour those Ukrainian soldiers “preferred to switch sides and join the people.” Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said the vehicles had been seized by militants

So I go do something else and save the blood pressure increase. There’s all kinds of things to do and places to go on the internet and then there’s this mystic thing referred to as “RL”. I think we can all agree that LGF’s past was, let’s say “checkered.” You were taking on a lot all at once in a time marked by a crap ton of sociological weirdness, and hadn’t yet developed the technical tools necessary for exerting the kind of control you have today over the blog’s environment. The result was that a lot of the people who feel comfortable and welcome posting here now deliberately avoided the place back then. Certainly some hateful shit got posted by some hateful users, all of whom are blocked and deleted now.

The thing that’s really detestable about the attacks from people like Mona Howard and Glen Greenwald isn’t just the lack of nuance and detail that goes with Twitter. It’s the sheer dishonesty, the obstinate refusal to examine the past in anything but the most opportunistic needs of the current argument they want to win.

I didn’t like the old LGF, pretty much at all. Certain memes that kept popping up really bothered me, i.e. “religion of peace.” But the constant growth and desire to grow, to improve, to be true to yourself instead of remaining safely in the folds of the conservative blog community was apparent many, many years ago. And the charge of “hate site” isn’t just not instructive in the case of old LGF, it dangerously diminishes the level of hatred and harm characteristic of actual hate sites.

277 Bubblehead II  Apr 16, 2014 3:44:08pm

re: #257 CuriousLurker

Thanks. Going through Andrews Breiviks manifesto. And yes LGF and Charles are in fact mentioned.

“I checked the front page of the major American “anti-Jihad” website Little GreenFootballs (LGF) from Friday 19 to Tuesday September 23 2008 to check what blogger Charles Johnson wrote about the demonstration. As far as I could see, he remained completely silent on the subject, yet there is no doubt that he was aware of the event. On Sep 8 he wrote about Fascists Hijacking Anti-Jihadism in Cologne”[18]” and stated that “Here we go again, as an all - star cast of European fascists hijacks the anti-jihad movement for their own sick political purposes.”

“I have watched, for the better part of a year, a number of decent human beings including, but not limited to, Pamela Geller, Paul Belien, Diana West, the Baron and Dymphna from the Gates of Vienna blog and many others, being at the receiving end of a vicious smear campaign from Charles Johnson and Little Green Footballs which is unlike anything I have seen in my life. After engaging in an insane witch - hunt on imaginary Fascists, whose ranks seem to grow every month, Mr. Johnson now suddenly chooses to look the other way in silence when very real Fascists use violence to silence their critics in a major Western city. I admit that makes me angry, and I think I have the right to be so.”

So yes, Charles and LGF were in fact mentioned in his manifesto. But not in a very flattering way.

While I can’t give the DoD a full pants on fire rating for the altered graph, they knew damn well that any mention of Charles and LGF was NEGATIVE and hoped no one would actually fact check them.

Guess again assholes.

I’m actually surprised that the NYPD’s formal “disbandment”* of its anti-Muslim “Demographics Unit” hasn’t engendered a lot more froth and bile from the usual Asshole Brigade, shrilling away about “victory for Sharia” or “creeping Jihad” or whatever: not that I would click Pam Geller’s site if you paid me (OK, but only if you paid me A LOT); but this would seem to be exactly the sort of thing that would get the Muslim-baiters all in a snit. Maybe it’s a good sign….?

Anyway, it’s probably a good deal of less-than-meets-the-eye: apparently the NYPD’s formerly-covert program was outed in 2011, and once exposed, was revealed to have accomplished basically nothing for an entire decade. Commissioner Bratton is probably just publicizing pulling the plug on to generate a little positive PR from the local Muslim community - who are, after all, probably no more or less law-abiding than any other New Yorkers (which isn’t saying a lot!)

* my guess is the demise of the “Demographics Unit” is mainly for the cameras: I’m sure that some (vastly more subtle) intelligence effort is still going to be going on.

Meanwhile, the South Korean ferry disaster is only going to get a whole lot worse. 290 missing, and the death toll is sure to climb.

With their breathing room disappearing, the 36-year-old businessman and some of the other passengers floated to an exit and swam to a nearby fishing boat. But 290 of the 475 people aboard — many of them high school students on a class trip — were still missing after the ferry sank Wednesday off the southern coast of South Korea. Six were confirmed dead and 55 were injured.

Early Thursday, divers, helicopters and boats continued to search for survivors from the ferry, which slipped beneath the surface until only the blue-tipped, forward edge of the keel was visible. The high number of people unaccounted for — possibly trapped in the ship or floating in the chilly water nearby — raised fears that the death toll could increase drastically.

It was still unknown why the ferry sank, and the coast guard was interviewing the captain and crew. The Sewol, a 146-meter (480-foot) vessel that can hold more than 900 people, set sail Tuesday from Incheon, in northwestern South Korea, on an overnight, 14-hour journey to the tourist island of Jeju.

About 9 a.m. Wednesday, when it was three hours from Jeju, the ferry sent a distress call after it began listing to one side, according to the Ministry of Security and Public Administration.

Passenger Kim Seong-mok told broadcaster YTN that after having breakfast, he felt the ferry tilt and then heard it crash into something. He said an announcement told passengers to not move from their places and that he never heard another about evacuating.

Absolutely horrific.

Breivik had made only “one passing reference” to her, she insisted (Geller ignored Breivik’s 12 references to her blog, however), and a mere 55 mentions of her SIOA co-founder Robert Spencer, which Geller described as “mostly quotes from Muslim scriptures.” (The New York Times counted 64 mentions of Spencer; Geller also disregarded Breivik’s “nomination” of Spencer for the Nobel Peace Prize.)…

…But in an almost surreal bit of legerdemain, Geller suggested that blame could lay with Charles Johnson, proprietor of the website Little Green Footballs, who, after initially being part of the anti-Muslim chorus, became appalled at the level of hatred and bigotry the movement represented and by 2009 had turned against it. Breivik, Geller wrote, “includes a long diatribe against Charles Johnson, whom he clearly admired until he felt betrayed enough to snap. The killer speaks about Charles Johnson obsessively and wrings his hands about Johnson’s turn to the left. Could this perhaps have been the provocation? Could this have been what caused him to snap?”

As I’ve been saying, that quote is not from Breivik. It’s contained in an article by Fjordman that Breivik copied and pasted, as he did with dozens and dozens of other articles. Those are not Breivik’s words.

I stand corrected then. So the the source I used was, shall we say, compromised? Do you have a link to a better source?

The blog owner was / is a gay, white, liberal South African who felt so strongly about 1st Amendment principles that he refused to patrol the community at all, and resisted most attempts to even imply anything beyond the most basic of rules -> Don’t break federal law. So people couldn’t conduct gun transaction across state lines or threaten the life of the President, but that was about it.

What was weird is that it worked for years, the community never got too big but it thrived, to a point. But it also stagnated, because the environment was in a sense inherently combative. People could say anything, so only one’s reputation kept one in check. Since it was damned near impossible to get blocked, in the end just one spamming troll was able to eventually drive off most of the valuable contributors, and once the rest realized the place was a deserted internet box canyon they abandoned it too.

It still exists, full of digital tumbleweeds.

Rand Paul’s foreign policy is so nuanced it’s ethereal and cannot be expressed in words

Rand Paul: Where I stand on containing Iran

I am not for containment in Iran. Let me repeat that, since no one seems to be listening closely: I am unequivocally not for containing Iran.

I am also not for announcing that the United States should never contain Iran. That was the choice I was given a few months ago and is the scenario being misunderstood by some in the news.

It is a dumb idea to announce to Iran that you would accept and contain that country if it were to become a nuclear power. But it is equally dumb, dangerous and foolhardy to announce in advance how we would react to any nation that obtains nuclear weapons.

The first blog I spent any time on was intended to be a radical free speech experiment, dedicated to the 1st Amendment. There were some posters who said all kinds of insane, hateful, racist shit. Whole screeds on supremacy contrasted against deeply thoughtful and contemplative discussions about every topic imaginable.

It fell apart, in retrospect obviously, due to the owner’s over-principled refusal to deal with trolls.

Takes me back to Usenet groups. Anyone else remember those? Most were completely unmoderated, so death threats and insane rants checkered the threads about finding a pediatrician or discussing the latest Harry Potter book.

I certainly grew a very thick skin, but I prefer moderated sites to picking through that crap.

310 Killgore Trout  Apr 16, 2014 4:02:56pm

Much of the outrageous outrage gimmick involves misrepresenting the target’s views or intentionally twisting words to create opinions the target does not have. But, after reading that Rand Paul article several times I have no idea what his policy towards Iran is supposed to be.

Containment of Iran is a bad idea, but our leaders need to think before they speak and consider that preemptively announcing responses to every hypothetical situation may well damage our ability to keep the United States safe and strong.

I have often said that we have, for too long, had a debate between the extremes of foreign policy — and that to be on either end of the extremes can have life-or-death consequences.

False choices between being everywhere all of the time and nowhere any of the time are fodder for debate on Sunday morning shows or newspaper columns. Real foreign policy is made in the middle; with nuance; in the gray area of diplomacy, engagement and reluctantly, if necessary, military action.

I saw the same thing in multiple forums/areas of interaction.

I use to play in a MUD for instance now and then with some friends. Eventually abandoned it due to dickhead players, a few dickhead admins, and a general admin disinterest in enforcing any sort of civilizing influence. And the non-jackass denizens melted away since there was little desire to spend time working towards doing interesting roleplay, completing a quest, or building something since someone else would turn up and purposefully destroy simply for the sake of the destruction.

The internet is sort of Wild West-ish and a lot of the communities reflect it. Those with a sense of law and justice will grow and flourish, the others turn to ghost towns or become the haunts of the outlaws.

Those budding young geniuses at Caltech have struck again.

A team of thirteen Caltech undergrads traveled to MIT’s Campus Preview Weekend last Thursday to mug the rival institute’s annual “pre-frosh” gathering of hundreds of students and parents touring the Massachusetts institute.

When cool, the mugs read, “MIT the Institute of Technology,” and when filled with a hot beverage, they turned orange to read, “Caltech the HOTTER Institute of Technology” along with a palm tree.

The mugs, which contained a special printing element, were printed in Southern California and then delivered to a Caltech grad living in the MIT area.

“It’s been a couple years since we had a good MIT prank,” said current Prank Club leader Julie D. Jester (that’s her real name). She told The Tech, MIT’s campus newspaper, “We enjoy our prank rivalry with MIT. We wanted to rekindle that relationship.”

Much of the outrageous outrage gimmick involves misrepresenting the target’s views or intentionally twisting words to create opinions the target does not have. But, after reading that Rand Paul article several times I have no idea what his policy towards Iran is supposed to be.

Right. Papa Paul is batshit crazy and dumb enough to wear it on his sleeve, whereas Rand is clever enough to hide his crazy behind empty verbiage.

Seriously though - when I read that I thought it was a clumsy answer to a reporter, just hoping to get through to the end, and pray there’s not followup. To think that was in a SPEECH he CRAFTED? Yeesh.

The weird thing about the word ‘retarded’ and its various versions, like ‘libtard’, ‘fucktard’, etc., is that yes, back when ‘retarded’ was the proper term to call the developmentally disabled, it WAS really offensive to call someone that as a term of derogation - by using ‘retarded’ as an insult you were insulting those who actually were retarded.

Now that it’s NOT the proper term, is it still offensive? ‘Moron’ used to be the proper term for certain lower levels of intelligence, but we stopped using that, so now nobody says, ‘it’s offensive to morons to call people aren’t morons morons!’

Also, Russia in 2014 has not the military might of Germany in 1939, and the US and the rest of NATO have not the military weakness of France, Britain, and the US in 1939. Hitler had made over the whole economy for war and conquest, and Putin’s doing it on a shoestring.

News flash: Its not always 1938, not every dictator is Hitler, and every crisis isn’t Munich. We let the Soviets crush Hungary in ‘56, Czechoslovakia in ‘68 and Georgia in 2008, and it didn’t lead to the Russians launching WWIII then, and it won’t now. The Russian army is a shadow of the Red Army, and if they do occupy the entire Ukraine, which I doubt, they will have their hands full just trying to control that.

Putin knows there is a big difference between the Baltic states, which are NATO members, and Ukraine, which isn’t and which has much closer historical ties to Russia than the Baltic states do. And if Putin does try to occupy all of Ukraine, he won’t have anything left to invade the Baltic.

So what kind of a jail term would you expect to get for doing this? Putting a city $150 million in debt because of your actions, plus

The sentencing of Rizzo brought the case close to an end four years after the Los Angeles Times first reported the true salaries of Rizzo and others. It was later learned that City Hall had illegally raised property taxes, business license fees, sewage fees and trash collection fees; illegally diverted gas taxes and other state and federal funds; and issued $50 million in voter-approved bonds for a park that was never built. Much of the money was used to cover the huge salaries of city officials.

That’s one totally corrupt asshole. I bet the judge through the book at him.

He expects Rizzo, 60, to be free in about six years after time off is granted for good behavior.

I agree. We should keep our commitments to NATO members, and demonstrate that commitment. But we cannot, and should not, assume the burden of defending the entire world. In the meantime, we are punishing Russia with sanctions which are hurting its economy, and Russia is isolating itself. We don’t have to go to war over Ukraine to demonstrate that Russian actions there are wrong.

If Putin tries to “digest” Ukraine, Russia is going to experience a lot of indigestion. The American people are heartily sick of foreign adventures after 13 years of war, and I doubt that neocon drumbeating for mor war will resonate.
