Putin Trots Out Edward Snowden for Pathetic Propaganda Op

A pitiful charade
World • Views: 27,280

YouTube

Meanwhile, today in Russia Vladimir Putin hauled Edward Snowden out of whatever dingy state apartment he’s been living in, for a high profile propaganda show that was utterly laughable.

Snowden, who has been given temporary asylum in Russia, connected via video link and asked Putin: “Does Russia intercept, store or analyze in any way the communications of millions of individuals?”

Putin began his response by telling Snowden that “you are a former agent, a spy. I used to work for an intelligence service [the KGB]. We are going to talk one professional language.”

Then the Russian president, who in recent weeks has claimed he did not send troops into Crimea only to now admit that he did and insists there are no Russian military personnel in eastern Ukraine even though reporters have heard at least one man there introduce himself as a Russian officer, made the case that:

“You have to get court permission to stalk a particular person. We don’t have a mass system of such interception, and according to our law it cannot exist.”

I’m wondering if the idea Snowden is languishing in a lousy apartment building isn’t the same mistake many made when they believed bin Laden was hooked up to a dialysis machine in some dingy, fly-blown cave. Not to compare the two unduly, of course.
They dealt in different types of damage.

Maybe Snowden’s pretty comfy and this bit of theatre is just his rent for the month.

Russia doesn’t have a surveillance system to do mass intercepts? Really?

The FSB is more heavily constrained than the CIA or NSA when it comes to domestic intel operations? Really?

There aren’t enough bridges to Brooklyn to sell to cover this. Oh wait, I’ll do bulk discount.

Russian wiretapping is quite different from US domestic wiretapping laws, particularly on oversight and use of the intel gathered:

In the U.S., law enforcement or intelligence agencies must first receive a court order permitting wiretapping. They send that warrant to telephone operators and Internet providers, which are then required by law to intercept the requested information and forward it to the respective government agencies. In Russia, Federal Security Service officers are also required to obtain a court order to eavesdrop, but once they have it they are not required to present it to anybody except their superiors in the FSB.

While the U.S. has checks and balances that regulate how the state eavesdrops on its citizens, Russia has none.

The FSB has control centers that are connected by cables directly to operators’ computer servers. To monitor particular phone conversations or Internet communications, an FSB agent only has to enter a command into the control center located in the local FSB headquarters. That practice is in place throughout the country. Every regional FSB headquarters is connected by cables to all telephone operators and Internet providers in the region.

That system, known as the Law Enforcement Support System, or SORM, is actually a holdover from the country’s Soviet totalitarian past and was developed by a KGB research institute in the mid-1980s. Recent technological advances have simply been used to fine-tune the system. Now, the SORM-1 system captures telephone and mobile phone communications, SORM-2 intercepts Internet traffic, and SORM-3 collects information from all forms of communication, providing long-term storage of all information and data on subscribers.

But Russia’s general approach to surveillance dates back to the Soviet era and has changed little since then. It has none of the checks and balances that are present in the West. FSB agents wanting to add a new phone number to monitor do not need to obtain a new court order and send it to the telephone operator or Internet provider. All they have to do is enter the required information into the control system in their office.

Meanwhile, the Russian system, like its U.S. counterpart, is expanding very rapidly. According to information obtained from Russia’s Supreme Court, the number of intercepted telephone conversations and e-mail messages has doubled over a period of six years, from 265,937 in 2007 to 539,864 in 2012. What’s more, these statistics do not include all of the counterintelligence eavesdropping on foreigners, the main category of wiretapping activity for the NSA in the U.S.

In contrast to the U.S., SORM is also used to wiretap the Kremlin’s political opponents with full support from the courts, which rubber-stamp requests for warrants. This became evident on Nov. 12, when the Supreme Court upheld the right of the authorities to eavesdrop on the opposition. In that case, the court recognized the legality of an FSB operation to wiretap conversations of Yekaterinburg city lawmaker Maxim Petlin because he had participated in a protest rally at which the FSB was criticized.

At the same time, however, Russia doesn’t have the advanced technology to intercept global telecommunications traffic to the extent that it is done in the U.S., but that does not mean Russia is not eavesdropping on communications beyond its borders.

I’ve said it all along.

He’s done major damage to the US. If he’d done it right, if he’d really had some concern over what the NSA was/is doing, he would have worked the proper US channels to get things changed. But I’ll always think this was planned in advance with the help of others who don’t mind doing major damage to their own country, either.

I’ll always believe that we’re big enough in our democratic ideals to make those changes without someone thinking they have to defect to get things done.

QFT.

Did you read the source articles about bathrooms at polling places?

[…]

The county provides disabled parking and wheelchair-accessible ramps in polling places that don’t already offer it. But bathrooms, either for the disabled or anyone else, are not part of the deal, and allowing voters to tinkle is up to each building owner or operator. Other than the emails to Dubin, there’s no formal bathroom policy.

To Dubin’s broader point about disabled access, though, White did concede that the county’s position is that it doesn’t have to provide those restrooms at polling places — because the county says it doesn’t have to provide any restrooms, period.

“There’s no legal requirement for us to provide bathroom access, but we, as a courtesy to our voters, do when there is a bathroom at the polling place,” she said. “That’s not always possible.”

Vox: What we know about the pro-Russian flier threatening to round up Ukrainian Jews

What we know is that someone is distributing anti-Jewish flyers and is looking to sow discord in the Ukraine. Which group stands to benefit most from this?

It isn’t the Jews, that’s for sure. And it has a whole lot of remarkable similarities to the kinds of propaganda pushed ahead of pogroms and the Nazi fanaticism that culminated in harsh repression in Germany.

This is a terribly depressing turn of events, and those Ukrainian Jews have got to be wondering when the other shoe might drop.

My family can trace its history back to parts of Ukraine, so this hits home too.

For far too many people (and we’ve seen this here in the US too) - when all else fails to explain what happens in breaking/current events, find the scapegoat to pin it on, and it invariably leads to the “other”, which all too frequently means Jews.

Yes, absolutely, when he was in Hawaii, Snowden was a traitor. And he may well have been manipulated by some foreign intelligence service, with or without his knowledge.

As to the present day, all we know for sure is that Snowden is intelligent enough to realize he’s a caged animal. He knows, and Putin knows he knows, and Snowden knows that Putin knows he knows, and that’s that. They understand each other.

I wonder how Putin regards Snowden?

Despite his thoroughly dickish personality, I get the distinct impression that Putin is very patriotic or, perhaps more accurately, very nationalistic. How must someone like Putin, who identifies so strongly with his own Russian ethnicity, regard someone like Snowden who turns on his own?

I suspect Putin regards him with utter contempt, which doesn’t bode well for Snowden’s long-term future, when he ceases being a useful tool.

If I were Snowden, I would be very, very afraid. And very, very pissed at myself and the people who helped me get to where I am.

I just can’t see Putin feeling any loyalty towards Snowden. Yanuk & Assad were/are leaders of their respective countries, so they have some status. Also, regardless of what massively corrupt & brutal assholes they might be, they didn’t rat out their own countries. Yes, yes, I know someone like Assad has done horribly brutal things to his fellow countrymen, but but he didn’t do it to his own, AFAIK—i.e. he didn’t brutalize fellow Alawites.

I think that’s something a nationalist like Putin can respect. Snowden? Not so much—he has no loyalties, not even to his own, so why would Putin put any stock in Snowden’s loyalty? Putin is an asshole. but he’s far from stupid, and I’m 99% certain that Snowden’s usefulness has an expiration date.

Ha yeah but you do got to wonder that with all the money Wile spent on gadgets from ACME that he couldn’t have just had Roadrunner at a local restaurant.

Hah! Seriously.

If the GOP takes the Senate in 2014, we may have to start counting the number of failed impeachments.

re: #208 Testy Toad T

As they say,

Please proceed.

The problem is that many of the people who will be complaining about “Why does the GOP do nothing but try to impeach Obama?” will be the same fuckwits who ignored the last 6 years and voted GOP anyway.

Chill-Ass Orangutan Doesn’t Even Care He Got Shot In The Leg

What we have here is a 14-year-old Sumatran Orangutan receiving medical treatment from a member of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme after taking an air-gun pellet to the leg. Is this chill-ass orangutan upset by any of this?

Nah, man. He’s good. Everything’s good.

For me, I think it’s a desire of them to wipe off his signature accomplishment. If some people lose their coverage, so what, at least Obummer lost his accomplishment. The more time that drags on and the more that enroll on ACA though, the more pathetic they look. I really think they seriously thought Roberts would just rubber stamp them and repeal ACA because they want Roberts to be what they believe “judicial activists” to be.

218 ObserverArt  Apr 17, 2014 1:11:34pm

It would be nice to be able to review some of the LGF member’s comments back when this whole Snowden thing broke.

I’m thinking several here saw this whole thing coming and it is almost going to script.

Poor Eddie has gotten himself in deep and there is probably not a whole hell of a lot of extraction methods to get out of it.

And I get the feeling his home country is in no hurry to help. Heck, they may never help, just leave the little punk there to rot.

Great game plan you had going there Eddie. You might want to see if you could at least fire your manager…Glenn Greenwald. All he does is give you the ‘take’ sign.

And Glenn…I see you got to a point where many saw you as a big man. Your shrinking daily now. In a few months, many might not even know who you are. It’s called distance.

How anyone can look at the difference between the parties these days and choose to vote one way or the other depending on random media bullshit or other crap is beyond me. I can more easily understand the GOP true faithful since they are merely consistently wrong, as opposed to being incomprehensible.

Cal Thomas is illustrating why the right is thankfully losing the gay marriage debate. They can’t’ discuss this issue without sounding like hysterical morons. Gay marriage a bigger threat than Russia or Islamic terrorist? See, your average person sees that and thinks what the fuck is wrong with this guy.

Fighting off jetlag here last night I went on a little journey into the deep dark “butthurt” webz, following of a certain link posted here yesterday relating to a certain group of very hurt and very bigoted characters from “portrait of an artist”

on my journey there was much irony, and mindbending lack of self-awareness, and what appears to be a complete lack of understanding contradiction and hypocrisy.

some of the tourist sights included lengthy dossiers on certain lizards.

all in all - it was an eye-opening trip into obsession and love/hate jealousy all wrapped up in hatred for the muslim.

have some sharp and strident thoughts related to what i read so will page it tonight or tomorrow.

Edward Snowden defends decision to question Vladimir Putin on surveillance

I’m sure Snowden asked Putin a “gotcha” question precisely so he could unleash the truth!

Ed has probably been busy emailing Glenn Greenwald hundreds of files from his pilfered cache of NSA documents. Any minute now we’ll have the first of a dozen articles over at The Intercept detailing what the U.S. knows of Russia’s intelligence operations against its citizens.

Yep, aaaaaaaaaaany minute now…
