SPLC: Users of ‘Stormfront’ Web Forum Responsible for Many Deadly Hate Crimes, Mass Killings

From Southern Poverty Law Center
Terrorism • Views: 43,431

Nearly 100 people in the last five years have been murdered by active users of the leading racist website, Stormfront, according to a report released today by the SPLC’s Intelligence Project.

Registered Stormfront users have been disproportionately responsible for some of the most lethal hate crimes and mass killings since the web forum became the first hate site on the Internet in 1995, a month before the Oklahoma City bombing. The report found that hate killings by Stormfront members began to accelerate rapidly in early 2009, when Barack Obama took office as the nation’s first black president.

A similar racist web forum, Vanguard News Network (VNN), was used by neo-Nazi and former Klan leader Frazier Glenn Miller, who has been charged with the Sunday murder of three people he mistakenly believed were Jews in Overland Park, Kan. Miller, who apparently changed his last name in recent years to Cross, logged more than 12,000 posts on VNN, whose slogan is, “No Jews, Just Right.”

“Stormfront is the murder capital of the racist Internet,” said Heidi Beirich, report author and Intelligence Project director. “It has been a magnet for the deadly and deranged. And VNN is almost as bad.”

but if this were a “scary” black dude hanging out in front of a voting precinct, the media would be all over it.

when i was in college during the mid-90s i had a class and tried to ride skateboards with a guy from Kansas for a semester who claimed to be an ex-skinhead who’d found jesus and quit that racist stuff. He told me i wouldn’t believe how many public corporations funnel shadow money into white supremacist groups, who had used that $$$ to arm skinhead “bounty-hunters” during the LA riot so they could earn their shoelaces. I was like “no way!” and chalked it up to him being a kook and bragging about his “great sins” before he’d become a Christian. But every time i see the mainstream media not doing its job in reporting organized white supremacist violence… i have to wonder.

This is an incredibly important story. Thanks for paging it.

Violent action follows from violent rhetoric as night follows day. Shining a light on this is the best way to deal with it, IMO.

Furthermore, the dots should be connected to include Fox News and Rush Limbaugh agitprop in the exposure and condemnation of violent rhetoric.

I wonder how much of it is corporate control and how much of it is fear of backlash and being shouted down by a load of screaming bigots.

Acceptance*: The Democrats stole the idea from Mitt Romney.

It’s not like this GOP really accepts Social Security, Medicare or the Civil Rights laws.

The GOP really has outed themselves as the scum of the earth during Obama’s presidency.

GOP apologists tend to go very quiet when confronted with this pattern of behavior. The fact that conservatives have been against every bit of forward progress in the US for its entire history cannot be spun away.

This is at the core of why I’m a liberal and not a conservative. The strides we have made and continued to make have been in spite of conservatism and conservatives. Revolutionary War era conservatives were content to stay with England. During the Civil War, they were willing to accept slavery staying legal, etc, etc. To me to be a liberal is to see that we have better days ahead while a conservative accepts the status quo because it’s all he knows.

Furthermore, US conservatives these days are not content to merely stop the clock, thereby perpetuating all existing injustices forever because ‘shut up’.

Instead, they want to undo at least 100 years of progress to return to a system where they are in charge, and their inferiors (i.e., women, blacks, gays, atheists, all other minorities) know their place.

30 Bulworth  Apr 17, 2014 1:34:45pm

From a NYT op-ed yesterday:

Mr. Miller’s (the alleged shooter at the Jewish centers recently) downfall came after the Southern Poverty Law Center filed a lawsuit on behalf of black North Carolinians; as part of a settlement in 1985, he agreed to stop operating a paramilitary organization. In 1987, a federal judge found that Mr. Miller had violated the agreement, and barred him from contacting others in the white power movement. Outraged, and anticipating criminal charges regarding the stolen military weapons, Mr. Miller briefly went underground. He would write in a self-published autobiography, “Since they wouldn’t allow me to fight them legally above ground, then I’d resort to the only means left, armed revolution.” He was later caught with a small arsenal, but he began cooperating with prosecutors, testifying against other white supremacists in exchange for a reduced sentence. He was released in 1990, after serving three years.

In 2009, the Department of Homeland Security issued a nine-page report detailing the threat of domestic terrorism by the white power movement. This short document outlined no specific threats, but rather a set of historical factors that had predicted white-supremacist activity in the past — like economic pressure, opposition to immigration and gun-control legislation — and a new factor, the election of a black president.

snip

The report raised intense blowback from the American Legion, Fox News and conservative members of Congress. They demanded an apology and denounced the idea that any veteran could commit an act of domestic terrorism. The department shelved the report, removing it from its website. The threat, however, proved real.

Precisely and that’s exactly why the Ron Paul types scare me the most. They want to do away with all the progress that we made in the Progressive era and return to what we were in the days when children worked in coal mines. No thanks.

The filing of the return itself is most likely handled by Romney’s tax preparer. All Romney would need to mail on or before tax day are payments and payment vouchers, which isn’t very much paper.

After Bill Clinton became the first sitting United States president to address a gay rights organization, the Human Rights Campaign,[7] Thomas published a column[8] in November 1997 opposing homosexuality, in which he said:

God designed norms for behavior that are in our best interests. When we act outside those norms—such as for premarital sex, adultery, or homosexual sex—we cause physical, emotional, and spiritual damage to ourselves and to our wider culture. The unpleasant consequences of divorce and sexually transmitted diseases are not the result of intolerant bigots seeking to denigrate others. They are the result of violating God’s standards, which were made for our benefit.
— Cal Thomas, Immutable Morals

oh yeah cal - because when two people bugger without a ring on a finger on each (whether or not they are married to each other is an aside) it causes spiritual, emotional and physical damage to our wider culture.

in other words - will the perverts stop fucking us into the 15th century.

This was in response to the following. Her and Glenn Greenwald feel a need to define LGF has being, or at least having in the past been a “hate site.” Now I was never a fan of the old LGF, but “hate site” is a very strong charge, so I pointed out that SPLC never once listed LGF as one. I figure the world needs some kind of objective standards. Just tossing around a term like “hate site” loosely, especially when it’s done purely as a distraction technique to avoid dealing with Charles’ current critiques of Greenwald’s activities, does a massive disservice to the fight against genuine hate sites like Stormfront.

I didn’t say AQ had anything to do with it. And it had made no tactical or strategic sense to be there in the first place.

My point is that it is popular on the Right to point to the deaths of 4 in Benghazi, or 18 in Mogadishu and say these embolden AQ, while ignoring the elephant in the room - the ineffectual response to, and rapid withdrawal after the Beirut Barracks bombing.

RIP Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who was praised as the most popular Spanish writer since Cervantes, died today in Mexico City at the age of 87.

Garcia Marquez, a former journalist who was born in Colombia but lived in Mexico for more than 30 years, is best known for his 1967 masterpiece, the epic, hallucinatory novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, about the trials and tribulations of one family over several generations. Widely taught in college, it has sold about 50 million copies in more than 25 languages.

At least one time (the Summer 2011 budget showdown with Congress) I heard Obama say, in response to Democrats who wanted him to explicitly say the GOP was crazy, that he had to be very careful about what he said, because he was the President.

I have no doubt that after Obama leaves office in January 2017, he’ll have many very, very interesting things to say about how many Republicans behaved during his presidency.

Anyone who’s been here for a while knows that there has always been a policy against racist hate speech and violent rhetoric at LGF. There used to be a disclaimer to that effect, in fact, warning that this kind of talk was cause for immediate banning with no appeal.

Even during the period these agenda-driven smear puppies like to say it was a ‘hate site’, people were often banned for outright hate speech, and talk of violence was never tolerated here.

Imperfectly enforced, definitely. But as technology improved, that situation changed.

There’s any number of imams out there who consider music in general to be ‘haram’, even though there’s absolutely bupkis in the Qur’an about music being forbidden whatsoever.

They cite hadiths, but the problem there is 1) the authenticity of said hadiths is dubious and 2) if a hadith contradicts the Qur’an, it’s not valid.

Typically, these kind of folks just want to ban anything that looks like it might be fun. Heaven forbid (eyeroll) that people want to have a good time.

I’ve gone to Iron Maiden and AC/DC concerts in Prague with a Muslim friend of mine, and former co-worker, who’s pretty good at scoring tickets to such events, and his wife really isn’t into that style of music.

Of course, my background in Islam is the Naqshbandi-Haqqani school, where we play music, sing and chant, so needless to say, that particular school certainly has no problems with music.

Cal Thomas is a fucking nut. I had enough of him when he demanded on television that the state should forcibly take the child of Amber Frey (the woman who approached police about Scott Peterson after she found out he was married to a missing woman and was lying to her)

Cal thought she was just another slut who needed some white law enforcement men to take control of her for having sexy times outside of marriage.

Even the other Fox panelists were visibly stunned.

I would like Cal to explain how he’s different from an Islamist cleric if he believes that children should be taken from unwed mothers then.

Perhaps not, but AQ’s precursor, Maktab al-Khidamat, was established in Afghanistan in 1984 by Abdullah Azzam (who also co-founded Lashkar-e-Taiba) and OBL, so both were surely already present there in late 1983, when the Marine barracks bombing happened in Beirut.

Their focus may have been the Soviets in Afghanistan, but I have no doubt that they would have been closely watching & making note of how the US responded to terrorist attacks by other groups in other countries.

If there’s any descriptor I’d label the old LGF with, it would be “anti Jihad.” Which is like, fine really, in theory, especially with regards to opposing radical political Islam and the terrorism that marked the 9/11 attacks. The problem obviously in retrospect was that the narrowness of that perceived focus, reinforced by things like the Cox and Forkum logo and a substantial base that took it as license to assume things about your intent that should never have been assumed.

Sufism is still pretty strong in Turkey, actually, as well as in the Turkish diaspora in Europe. The Sufis are also quite good at making converts - many of the Sufis at the Sufi centers I went to in Germany were ethnic German converts - in one of the centers, they were the majority. The Sufis are also quite good at making converts - many of the Sufis at the Sufi centers I went to in Germany were ethnic German converts - in one of the centers, they were the majority. I know they’re setting up shop in Prague now as well, so we’ll have to see how that goes.

I can see the appeal, if nothing else at least the Suffis have fun, there’s music, the services are really cool. It looks like more fun than most forms of Christianity.

Really. This can’t be updinged enough. It’s the actions of Republicans that get them called racist despite what they believe. Maybe Republican candidates and officials should stop saying minorities vote Democratic because they want “Free stuff.” I could go on and on but the Republicans and right have earned the racist label that gets thrown at them.

I try to make my criticism of the GOP as honest as I can, because it stings worse that way.

For example, equating the GOP with the Nazis is too kind because its factual incorrectness gives the GOP apologist too much material to work with.

The deadlier charge against the GOP is that elements within it, especially the so-cons, are into scapegoating people to lethal effect where possible (e.g., kill the gays bills in Africa).

On the topic of LGF as a hate site, there’s no doubt that there was a bit of anti-Muslim bias in the years immediately following 9/11; but it never came anywhere near progressing to outright hatred. Calling LGF a hate site is somewhat akin to calling Fox a news network; sure, there may be elements somewhere in the past that can be twisted and tortured into being called “news”, but certainly nothing resembling such today.

Obamacare enrollments now reported to be 8 million. Of course this report like every report before it is a lie because shutup. And the numbers don’t matter anyway because people are forced to sign up on the exchanges at the point of a gun and the program is a failure anyway, trainwreck. Confirmed. FACT. Period. ///

People will continue to argue back and forth about who said what before the President signed the ACA into law, and after the President signed the ACA into law. But the name of the game remains the same: President Obama wants more Americans to have insurance coverage, and many ACA opponents want fewer Americans to have insurance coverage.

Yeah I don’t like resorting to Nazis because I hate doing that for obvious reasons. A proprietor that posts no hate of his/her own and polices hateful comments can only be charged with running a hate site in a looking glass world where up is down.

The other thing about Reagan is something I didn’t consider when he was President and I was in my 20s - he was 1) an actor, and 2) a former Union President. From the latter, he knew that you start a negotiation by asking for the Moon, then you bargain back from there. From the former, he knew how to make it seem like he was crazy enough to be serious about the starting position.

If I had to state one criticism of Obama, it’s that he approaches a negotiation like a rational person, stating a reasonable set of wants, rather than, for example, asking for Single Payer and ending up with Obamacare plus the Public Option.

I recently read about a couple of similar things (although of course, the kill the gays bills in Africa are uniquely offensive). According to The End of Faith (Sam Harris, pp. 167 - 168), the G. W. Bush Administration cut off funding to any overseas family-planning group that provided information about abortion. This affected condom availability in 16 countries, and presumably contributed to deaths from AIDS. Also, the Bush Administration required that 1/3 of the AIDS prevention funds allocated to Africa be squandered on teaching abstinence rather than condom use.

It took a very unique combination of blog owner and the right kind and number of reasonable commenters to execute the kind of change that took place here. It’s easy to imagine this place dying completely as a result of the lines in the sand Charles drew.

The fights against Creationism, Christian Supremacy and the European neo-fascist right alienated a huge chunk of a community that had come to view the place as theirs. It’s no coincidence that Blogmocracy originally had named itself LGF 2.0, they felt that their home had been stolen by one random dude, (who they had just coincidentally worshiped) ignoring the fact that this place never belonged to them. Without a solid number of moderates and liberals already in place and contributing to those debates that this place could easily have ended up another deserted blog on internet. Instead, while the old numbers haven’t come back the discussion here is actually thriving, and the community is more diverse and interesting than ever.

There were people here, in the past, who were haters. They posted on this site. That’s about as close as it comes.

There was also a tendency towards group blame, and a lack of understanding for the historic position of the ‘left’ on Islam; that for a long time, leftists were the only ones complaining about radical Islam, specifically in its treatment of women and minorities. That bit bugged me.

But that’s the past. It wasn’t a hate site. The most that can be said is Charles Thought Things That Were Wrong. Egads.

Along with the haters, there’s also a weird puritopian emphasis on self-flagellating, for going over every single old mistake and repudiating it individually. I don’t get the point. A brief perusal of the blog can see what Charles thinks now, how is it in any way a gotcha to say “You never said you were wrong about this particular thing!” It’s not like he pretends he wasn’t anti-Jihad, that he didn’t, at one point, associate with the people he then repudiated. You can’t really repudiate without acknowledging the association.

There are also those of us who were in the midst of a mindset change at the same time Charles was. What separated me from the haters is that I was willing to change as I learned more true facts, as opposed to those who were stuck in their ideological rut and resented that people might actually change their minds, even about core convictions.

I used to be on Fark, which just got fucking trolled to death. Even back when the real weirdos like Bagua and Walter and the like were here, you didn’t just get page after page of low-effort trolling. As wrong as they were, and as nutty as some of them were, they could actually articulate their arguments enough for a debate to happen. They were presenting arguments honestly.

Something about the stripped-down format, too, lends itself well to drawing attention to people’s fuckups. With one main thread at a time, with others easily eye-able, it’s hard for someone to slip by classic cockups without getting noticed for them. On a place like Fark, with hundreds of things going on at once, it was a lot more effort to remember who made the good, and who made the horrible arguments, so much that people made plugins to color-code people.

Even back when I was being downdinged for stating that most US Jews were leftist, there was something worthwhile engaging here.

The comments section did contain quite a bit of anti-Muslim vitriol and hatred after 9/11, and I started posting here in October 2001.

But Charles didn’t get swept away in all that. He did his best to eliminate the worst offenders, and began the registration system to purge the comment section to effect an even greater amount of control over his site. This is, and remains, his site, and he saw all that hate as a reflection on him.

To his credit, he did something about it. He did the registrations and he recruited a couple of people, like Stinky, to make sure things didn’t get out of hand.

And the split with the anti-Islam right, made with principle and conviction, was and remains the right thing to have done.

It’s his place and his rules, and I’ve been privileged enough to be around for a good portion of it.

You’ll find both Sunni and Shi’a Sufis; the problems get started when overly-dogmatic and narrow-minded kooks get on their high horses and start pontificating.

Sufism is still pretty strong in Turkey, actually, as well as in the Turkish diaspora in Europe. The Sufis are also quite good at making converts - many of the Sufis at the Sufi centers I went to in Germany were ethnic German converts - in one of the centers, they were the majority. I know they’re setting up shop in Prague now as well, so we’ll have to see how that goes.

The “Happy” video is probably far more representative of the average British Muslim than people like Anjem Choudary. Are there Muslims who think dancing is wrong? Yes, there are. It probably wouldn’t take me long to find Christians & Jews who think it’s wrong too, if I cared to go looking.

This is where people like Hirsi Ali, Geller, et al cause the most damage. They create fear & suspicion by painting all Muslims with the brush of extremism. I mean, FFS, I wish people understood that 99% of us don’t sit at home cursing the West and plotting how we’re going to defeat the infidels. We work, cook dinner, bake pies (like VB), do chores, exercise, and, yes, sometimes we even dance! The trolling at Fark became a feature, not a bug. I think Drew realized at a point that he could squeeze page views out of fostering false controversies. Trolls kept dumbshits arguing and even when they put in an “ignore” feature you couldn’t prevent dumbshits from quoting trolls. It’s no substitute for actually actively managing a site.

There also came a point over there when triangulation of “middle” from two self identified extremes actually got codified into the very design and operating philosophy. They’ve since abandoned that weird “commie” vs. “fascist” balancing scale, but the worship of false equivalence remains obvious.

I’m so embarrassed. I used to DONATE to him. OMG, I could die of the embarrassment.

I think there was always an element of ego and unwillingness to back down from unreasonable positions about him, but he has definitely jumped the shark and gone to a completely higher plane of asshole/liar/hypocrite. I’d be interested to know how many converts there are like me out there. I’ve rarely respected anyone less than I respect him now.

I never donated - I’m a cheap summbitch - but I used to read approvingly his pre-Salon blog, and even bought his book. Or at least, I seem to recall having bought his book. Then I kinda lost track, and the next time he crossed my radar was when Snowden rabbited to Hong Kong and all this shit started.

He’s become SO unreasonable that I wonder why I never saw it before.

I absolutely, categorically reject the characterization of Little Green Footballs as a “hate site,” now or ever. And the people who are trying to push this smear are using a source for it that is undoubtedly, by any measure, a virulent hate site of the worst kind.

If you look at Mona Holland’s Twitter feed, by the same token it can be described as a virulent hate feed. She has this virulent hate thing going on for Teh Juice.

Of course she has already twitsplained that she is NOT AN ANTI-SEMITE because she exempts certain Juice (like Max Blumenthal, Gilad Atzmon) from her Twit Hate.

Anyone here familiar with Amos Oz? I’d never heard of him until CriticalDragon posted this Page about Palestinian college students visiting Auschwitz (the WaPo article mentions that the professor who arranged the trip, Mohammed S. Dajani, carries around a book by Oz).

Since I’m in the middle of reading a couple of books about the I-P conflict written in the early ’90s by the investigative journalist Robert Friedman (1, 2, 3, 4), it caught my eye as something I might find useful in terms of increased understanding about the issues.

I found several essays of his (Oz’s) around the web—like Fanatics Attack, which I thoroughly enjoyed—and I read several articles about him as well as reviews of his books, so I ordered a copy of the book the professor was carrying around, How to Cure a Fanatic.

The reason I’m boring all of you with this is because I know Oz is a very famous Israeli author and I’d just like to know if any of you have thoughts on his writings or know of specific things I should be aware of when reading his works.

222 Gus  Apr 17, 2014 4:19:58pm
65 years after the liberation of Auschwitz we should reclaim our history and ask why? Why were the Jews hated? Why did European people stand up against their next door neighbours? Why are the Jews hated in the Middle East, surely they had a chance to open a new page in their troubled history? If they genuinely planned to do so, as the early Zionists claimed, why did they fail? Why did America tighten its immigration laws amid the growing danger to European Jews? We should also ask for what purpose do the holocaust denial laws serve? What is the holocaust religion there to conceal? As long as we fail to ask questions, we will be subjected to Zionists and their Neocons agents’ plots. We will continue killing in the name of Jewish suffering. We will maintain our complicity in Western imperialist crimes against humanity.

As devastating as it may be, at a certain moment in time, a horrible chapter was given an exceptionally meta-historical status. Its ‘factuality’ was sealed by draconian laws and its reasoning was secured by social and political settings. The Holocaust became the new Western religion. Unfortunately, it is the most sinister religion known to man.

SPLC and the lawyers for teh victims of KKK/Neo-Nazi/white supremacists had the right idea. Sue them out of existence and take everything they own.

That Greenwald thinks that is somehow odious means that the SPLC’s strategy is doing the right thing.

That logic is bad, in that it denies the stopped clock phenomenon.

A better argument is that what SPLC is doing doesn’t violate the 1st Amendment because it isn’t direct government action. Greenwald is free to make the argument that the courts should rule in favor of hateful speech, however using someone like Hale is a really poor example and Greenwald is flat out lying about Hale only being punished for free expressions protected by the 1st Amendment.

In May 1991, Hale and his brother allegedly threatened three African-Americans with a gun, and he was arrested for mob action. Since he refused to tell police where his brother was, Hale was also charged with felony obstruction of justice; he was convicted of obstruction, but won a reversal on appeal. In 1992, Hale attacked a security guard at a mall and was charged with criminal trespass, resisting arrest, aggravated battery and carrying a concealed weapon. For this attack, Hale was sentenced to 30 months probation and six months house arrest.

In late 2002, Hale filed a class action lawsuit against Judge Joan Lefkow, the United States district court judge presiding over his trademark case. Again in late 2002 and prior to his arrest, Hale denounced Lefkow in a news conference, claiming that she was biased against him because she was married to a Jewish man and had grandchildren who were biracial.

On January 8, 2003, Hale was arrested, charged with soliciting an undercover FBI informant to kill Lefkow.[11]

On February 28, 2005, Lefkow’s mother and husband were murdered at her home on Chicago’s North Side. Chicago Police revealed on March 10 that Bart Ross, a plaintiff in a medical malpractice case that Lefkow had dismissed, admitted to the murders in a suicide note written before shooting himself during a routine traffic stop in Wisconsin the previous evening. The murders and suicide had no connection to Hale or Creativity.[12]

On April 6, 2005, Hale was sentenced to a 40-year prison term for his conviction for attempting to solicit the murder of Lefkow.

Over his life Hale proved himself quite willing to back up his rhetoric with overt, violent criminality.

Basically Greenwald’s sin then is what he would become famous for later, and now, glossing over facts that undermined the “point” he was trying to make.

This, surely will turn Valdimir Putin around. far more powerful than sanctions or support for rebel factions. Pizza cake.

Thanks you for that. A very interesting and funny article.

I note he’s noticed something I’ve said here and elsewhere many times: fanatics have no sense of humour.

re: #303 First As Tragedy, Then As Farce

When you unsubscribe from MIcrosoft’s spam marketing emails, they send you more spam emails asking if you’d like to resubscribe to their spam marketing emails.

Just think of all the “great content” you’ll be missing out on.

If you don’t reply in the affirmative, the emails start getting more ‘intimidating’. The next one will be on the order of “Nice little OS you’ve got on that computer, be a pity if anything were to happen to it.”

You have to wonder how many murders have been committed by Facebook, Twitter, and Facebook users.

You have to wonder how many murders have been committed by Facebook, Twitter, and Facebook users.

Neither Twitter nor Facebook are built upon an ideology of hate.

Are you Serbian?

Sorry for not replying sooner, but no, not Serbian. My username is a combo of The Predator and MK’s Baraka.
