This Is Bad: Heartbleed Attack Targets VPN Service

Bad craziness
Technology • Views: 41,625

Most of the coverage of the Heartbleed bug has focused on the security problems for websites, but there’s another avenue of attack now being exploited by hackers: the Virtual Private Network (VPN) systems used by many large and small businesses.

Security firm Mandiant reports that it is has observed a Heartbleed attack occurring “in the wild.” The attack targeted a Virtual Private Network service at an unnamed organization, gaining access to its internal corporate network — and it shows that hackers are finding the parts of the internet are least likely to have been updated to protect against Heartbleed.

The attack worked like this. When a user logs into a VPN service, it issues a “session token,” a temporary credential that is supposed to prove that a user has already been authenticated. By stealing the authentication token from the server’s memory, the attacker can impersonate the legitimate user and hijack her connection to the server, gaining access to the organization’s internal network.

This disastrous security hole in OpenSSL may have more effect on these kinds of semi-closed systems than on easily upgraded web servers, because the people who use VPNs and other types of networking applications and devices may not even realize they’re relying on the buggy versions of OpenSSL, and it may be difficult (or even impossible in some cases) to update the software.

But web servers are still a big problem as well; the Washington Post’s Brian Fung points out that we may be seeing some large scale disruptions of the Internet in the not too distant future: Heartbleed Is About to Get Worse, and It Will Slow the Internet to a Crawl.

Estimates of the severity of the bug’s damage have mounted almost daily since researchers announced the discovery of Heartbleed last week. What initially seemed like an inconvenient matter of changing passwords for protection now appears much more serious. New revelations suggest that skilled hackers can use the bug to create fake Web sites that mimic legitimate ones to trick consumers into handing over valuable personal information.

The sheer scale of the work required to fix this aspect of the bug — which makes it possible to steal the “security certificates” that verify that a Web site is authentic — could overwhelm the systems designed to keep the Internet trustworthy.

“Imagine if we found out all at once that all the doors everybody uses are all vulnerable — they can all get broken into,” said Jason Healey, a cybersecurity scholar at the Washington-based Atlantic Council. “The kinds of bad things it enables is largely limited only by the imagination of the bad guys.”

UPDATE at 4/18/14 6:22:46 pm

Please note! We got out in front of the rush to revoke/reissue our SSL certificates right away, the day the bug was announced, so Little Green Footballs is not vulnerable to the problem described in the Washington Post article.

More dimensions of hurt are related to revocations of Certs.

Heartbleed certificate revocation tsunami yet to arrive

Excerpt:

Even if you revoke your certificate, you may still be vulnerable to impersonation

However, even if all of the affected certificates were to be revoked, contemporary web browser software handles certificate revocation poorly.

“Soviet propaganda posters!”

“While some conservative bloggers took a tongue-in-cheek approach to the photo, The Heritage Foundation actually released a deadly-serious statement condemning Carney. What none of these folks have explained is that the posters in question are World War II recruitment posters, recruiting soldiers to fight the Nazis, and women to work in factories while men fought the Nazis. Why all of these patriots love Nazis so much is anyone’s guess.”

Nom nom nom… Just tried a variation on my way of cooking basic wings. Sectioned them out, good sprinkle of my seasoned salt mix, but I had the oven on “Inferno” temp (500 Degrees). 25 minutes, take them out, flip them on the broiler pan, another 10 minutes, then a toss in the sauce.

Rendered out a lot of the fat, nice skin, perfectly cooked without being dry. I think I have a new standard.

Well since this is an internet security thread, this shouldn’t be off topic. I have a small home adhoc network. 4 hardwired computers (fire walled) and virus protected but also a wireless AP (also fire walled and SSID broadcast turned off) using WPA2 encryption for various devices.

I monitor the AP for possible intrusions. Currently using Nirsoft Network Watcher. Only problem, it doesn’t log any connection or attempts to connect. Can anybody suggest a good network monitoring program (preferably freeware) that does log all wireless connections or attempts to connect?

Thanks

Generally, for logging wireless connection attempts, your router’s firmware package should be able to do that. If it can’t, you may be able to install DD-WRT or OpenWRT on your router; they are Linux distributions that can run router/wireless hardware. They will certainly be able to log the wireless connection for you.

Hmm. Unfortunately, there’s no way that I’m aware of to be able to monitor connections to your network from anywhere other than the source of said network, which would be the AP. If it doesn’t have a firmware upgrade option, it may still be possible to install one of the Linux distros, but it also dramatically increases your chances of bricking it if you stuff up the install.

Well that’s just it. The NirSoft (nirsoft.net) program does monitor both wireless and hardwired connections and does a good job of it. It identifies MAC address, Company that made the NIC and Computer name. It just doesn’t log it. It’s Freeware and I suppose I could make a donation and a suggestion that the author to add a logging feature. But I want something now.

Long story short. Home wireless (wep) was breached. Computers seized. Nothing found, but took 2 years to get them back. Now spare parts. Don’t want a repeat. Want logs showing when access was gained.

Part of it is just physical, I’m big enough and broad shouldered enough that few people have ever challenged me physically. Another part is not being afraid to take a punch, there are far worse things in this world that. Once you’re not afraid to take a punch, you don’t flinch, you carry yourself in a way that discourages another chunk of potential belligerents. The last part is avoidance, knowing when to walk away. Make smart decisions, being backed into a corner is almost always a mindset, not reality.

But the Paramount Allegiance of every citizen is due to the Federal Government in the exercise of all its Constitutional powers as the same have been or may be defined by the Supreme Court of the United States; and no power exists in the people of this or any other State of the Federal Union to dissolve their connection therewith or perform any act tending to impair[,] subvert, or resist the Supreme Authority of the government of the United States. The Constitution of the United States confers full power on the Federal Government to maintain and Perpetuate its existance [existence], and whensoever any portion of the States, or people thereof attempt to secede from the Federal Union, or forcibly resist the Execution of its laws, the Federal Government may, by warrant of the Constitution, employ armed force in compelling obedience to its Authority.

Still on the cloning topic… yesterday I posted about some outlets going on about some big cloning breakthrough but I couldn’t determine if it was real new news.

Well, io9, which is pretty low on my list of trusted sources, also jumps in:

Researchers Clone Stem Cells From Human Adults

But io9 also links to this year old paper in Cell: cell.com

I don’t know who is trying to start this as a piece of new news, but it illustrates how so much of the “news” outlets on the net really are just copying each other without any thought.

Similar thing has been happening on twitter the past couple of days. Countless people have been tweeting a Bart Ehrman appearance on Colbert, as if it was something new. It’s from 2009, and Ehrman is now a couple of books past the one being plugged in that Colbert piece. It turns out some Christian outlet posted it as some sort of headline, trying to say that Colbert’s character was making a valid point (amazingly), then all the faithful started to tweet that as true.

Sigh.

re: #91 goddamnedfrank

Part of it is just physical, I’m big enough and broad shouldered enough that few people have ever challenged me physically. Another part is not being afraid to take a punch, there are far worse things in this world that. Once you’re not afraid to take a punch, you don’t flinch, you carry yourself in a way that discourages another chunk of potential belligerents. The last part is avoidance, knowing when to walk away. Make smart decisions, being backed into a corner is almost always a mindset, not reality.

And thus my point is made. You don’t have to fight in large part because you are ready to fight.

Si vis pacem, para bellum.

Also very, very low on my list of worthwhile sites is the Science 2.0 website, whose proprietor is a Glenn Beck fan.

Today’s editorial from that site:

Holistic Conservation: Forget 20th Century Claims About People And Species Extinction

[…]

In Nevada, the Federal government used assault weapons and special operations armor against American citizens to protect land supposedly at risk due to man; in that case, a few hundred cows they claimed were going to kill off a local turtle and set off a domino effect of ecological doom. How many nuclear bomb tests were done in Nevada? Over 1,000, so the idea that a few cows was going to ruin the environment was not based on evidence, it was based on Senator Harry Reid having an interest in putting a solar facility there.

[…]

A lot of idiocy flies under the cloak of “science”.

“Science” is being used as a fashion statement, as a rallying cry, and as a camouflage for some really stupid stuff out there on the internet.

I’m pretty sure the flood of cloning news stories have confused that year old paper on cloning with this new one about using adult skin cells for therapeutic use, which is new:

Human Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer Using Adult Cells

Derivation of patient-specific human pluripotent stem cells via somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) has the potential for applications in a range of therapeutic contexts. However, successful SCNT with human cells has proved challenging to achieve, and thus far has only been reported with fetal or infant somatic cells. In this study, we describe the application of a recently developed methodology for the generation of human ESCs via SCNT using dermal fibroblasts from 35- and 75-year-old males. Our study therefore demonstrates the applicability of SCNT for adult human cells and supports further investigation of SCNT as a strategy for regenerative medicine.

Pretty much.

Of course, if a college athlete can carry a 4.0 in majors other than Underwater Basket Weaving or P.E., then they would do well to go to a college that tends to value the “student” in “student-athlete” more, like the Ivy League schools or Vanderbilt (the perpetual punching bag in SEC football, but they tend to graduate many more of their athletes than almost any other school in the conference).

The problem is that Ivy League schools can’t give athletic scholarships per their conference rules. So, if you have a 4.0 GPA but are poor or middle class (and a 4.0 GPA probably won’t even get you into a Ivy League school nowadays), what’s the best opportunity for you to get a college education?

DPS said authorities helped them vacate the ranch and take an inventory.

Jeffs is serving life in prison after being convicted in 2011 of sexually assaulting two girls he took as child brides. The ranch was owned by his Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a radical offshoot of mainstream Mormonism whose roughly 10,000 followers believe polygamy brings exaltation in heaven. What always amuses me about this battle is, well, there’s this and there’s Salarnis.

Here we have posturing and a loss that delayed the Persians by seven days at the most. Because of the loss, the battle that could have been a strategic victory (though tactical draw) saw the Greeks withdraw. (Artemisium)

Salarnis saw the outnumbered combined Greek navy win.

Don’t diss Leonidas. His plan at Thermopylae was sound, since the Greeks could face the Persian army only at places that limited the massive Persian numerical advantage. So he chose just such a position and defended it.

Moreover, while the Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BC was ultimately halted by a major Greek victory at Salamis, the Greeks could not have counted on that sort of devastating win at the outset of the campaign. Another reason Leonidas decided on a defensive stand at Thermopylae was that the other (and more likely) way the coalition of Greek cities could survive would be for the Persians to run out of supplies. Xerxes had at least 120,000 men under his command and an army that huge could not afford to the stay in once place for long. Thus Xerxes desperation to break through at Thermopylae: His army needed to either push on or give up. as it would strip the area bare if stayed there too long.

It was strategically brilliant. It was tactically mediocre.

Had they collapsed the hillsides and built a wall at the end of the channel they’d have done better. Because when they got flanked by a roughly equal sized force that used a goat track they’d have been able to withdraw. it would have taken the Persians another week minimum, to clear the road. Forage parties ranging in front of the road (to keep the Persians fed) could be met on equal or better terms by Spartans and other Greeks.

Regarding the MV Sewol disaster in South Korea, I came across this in Yonhap.

While apologizing to victims and their families, the captain said that it was not true that he failed to instruct passengers to leave the vessel.

“I gave such an order (to passengers to evacuate),” captain Lee told reporters upon being arrested, adding he told the people to remain seated “before any rescue vessels had arrived. The water was cold.”

The 55-year-old steersman who guided the boat with the female mate said he navigated the ship just as he normally does, but the steering gear “turned exceptionally faster than normal.”

Experts and investigators have said a sudden shift of the vessel caused 180 vehicles and 1,157 tons of freight on board to slide to one side, disrupting the balance of the ship.

An official of the probe team also noted that they have almost ruled out a theory that the boat hit a submerged rock, causing the tragedy. Initial reports said the vessel could have hit an underwater rock based upon survivors’ accounts that they heard a big thumping sound before it started to lean.

“It appears that there were no external shocks to the ship,” an officer said, though they have yet to find what made such a thundering sound.

english.yonhapnews.co.kr

Of course, authorities are still performing a search and rescue operation and the ship has yet to be righted. Until then, it’s all speculative; however, a sudden load shift on the car deck could explain that “thumping sound” survivors recall hearing as well as causing the ship toll to port.

Regarding the MV Sewol disaster in South Korea, I came across this in Yonhap.

It’s an awful tragedy, but also one which they might not have been able to avoid. When people are frightened and confused, they may not act in their own interest, and might hear something totally contrary to what’s being said, not to mention memories of those events being unclear as well as tainted by grief.

When I read that, I thought about how libertarians would act on a sinking ship. “Nobody orders me around.”

When I read that, I thought about how libertarians would act on a sinking ship. “Nobody orders me around.”

I would like to think that libertarians would have the common sense to recognize they would be in a life-or-death situation at that point, and that it would probably be a good idea to follow orders.

However, libertarians being what they are, they probably wouldn’t, thinking they know better than everyone else, with easily predictable results (ie, they would likely perish).

I personally have a very strong individualistic streak; however, I know that in an emergency situation, I will defer to the person with more experience in such matters as that would maximize the chances of survival. For instance, flight attendants aren’t there to pour you drinks - their purpose is also safety of the passengers in an emergency. I recall that my ex-wife, being a chief flight attendant herself, went through extensive training in safety procedures and protocol once a year - it was a job requirement for her. So in an emergency, listening to her would be the logical thing to do.

The connection between “1971” and the NSA revelations isn’t just historical metaphor. Laura Poitras, the journalist and documentarian, is a producer on the film. Snowden, an NSA contractor, initially contacted Poitras about leaking thousands of documents that revealed the NSA’s collecting of Americans’ phone and email records. On Monday, she shared in the Pulitzer Prize for public service given to The Washington Post and The Guardian for the NSA revelations.

If Greenwald wants something to do in Brazil, he ought to be looking at the corruption like this that goes on all around him in his adopted country and internationally by characters like Ricardo Teixeira.

Report: 10-year-old daughter of former FIFA official received over $3 million

prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com

(snip)

“Teixeira is the former Brazilian Football Confederation president and FIFA executive committee member, and has a long history of corruption, stepping down from his position in 2012.

“The alleged amount of money exceeds the amount that former CONCACAF president Jack Warner was accused of receiving from a Qatari firm a month ago. The Telegraph broke that story as well.

“According to The Telegraph, the deposit to Teixeira’s daughter is thought to have been made by former Barcelona president and head of Nike Brazil, Sandro Rosell. The two are reportedly very close.” More

Well, no, it isn’t metaphor. In fact, it is completely irrelevant. The Pentagon Papers were a series of policy documents that outlined the government’s gyrations that led to a justification for direct, overt action in Cambodia and Laos without the consent of the Congress.

Little Eddie released documentation of the collection of metadata previously approved by the Patriot Act and acknowledged by the NSA. Yes, yes, there were some embarrassing specifics, but all predictable given the latitude of the original legislation.

For those of us who had been following the bouncing ball over the years, the revelations were as shocking as the last scene in Casablanca.

I suspect the time difference has to do with routes and the mid-level winds. The 787 like the 777 is two engined, which, unless the regulations have changed, the FAA requires the operator to stay within a one-engine operable distance from the nearest airport. That was one of the limitations of the 777 versus the 747. I don’t know if the regs have changed or not.

A lot of the difference is in the wing of the aircraft. On the 787, the wing looks like a scimitar, with a huge dihedral aspect. The damn thing cruises at .90 Mach at 40,000 feet. We hit ground speeds of over 700 mph heading east. Yes, we were in the core of the jet stream, but the 777 never gets that fast.

On the way back from London, we took a very southerly route (the flight often drives a great circle route as far north and west as Detroit before entering the CONUS, we came in over Boston to get the most favorable winds) and we were hitting 650+ mph mid-ocean. It’s just a fantastically quiet, comfortable airplane and the food and service on British Airways puts US carriers (I’m looking at you, United/Continental, American, and Delta) to shame.

re: #202 William Barnett-Lewis

Nor do they understand what absolute scum the Spartans were. Frankly if the world could have given Sparta to the Persians and nothing else, the world would have been a better place.

The problem was that Sparta wasn’t Persia’s main target, as even 300 depicts. Persia’s main quarrel was with Athens, for having intervened in a democratic (for Greek values of democracy) revolution in Melitus, a Greek city in Persian-controlled Asia Minor (modern Turkey). Sparta, however, saw a Persian conquest of Athens as ‘the thin edge of the wedge’, knowing that Persia wouldn’t stop there.

Sparta was also uniquely vulnerable if Persia got a lodgement in Greece, for full Spartans were outnumbered several to one by their helot serfs. The Spartans demanded 50% of the helots harvests, whereas the Persian Empire seldom demanded more than 20% from anyone and then only when its army was passing through. Thus the Spartans feared than if the Persian Empire got close to Spartan territory, it would likely incite a helot revolt by offering the serfs a better deal.

There are some actors who will always be associated with the bad guy. Hugo Weaving will always be associated with Agent Smith, who’s one of the most memorable baddies in recent movie history (and was Red Skull in Cap Am). That’s even though he had a prominent role as Elrond in the LOTR/Hobbit trilogies.

Another one is Christopher Lee, who was a baddie in both the Star Wars prequels and LOTR and who got widespread attention much earlier as Scaramanga in The Man with the Golden Gun.

Great actors both, but who take being the bad guy with glee and abandon. Regal evil. I’d argue that it is their voice and cadence that got them the attention in the first place - and lots of actors say they like playing the bad guy since they can do stuff they couldn’t as the good guy.

This is a wonderful victory, and shows what one determined person can accomplish.

Student fought bureaucrats for Holocaust justice

bigstory.ap.org

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Charlotte van den Berg was a 20-year-old college student working part-time in Amsterdam’s city archives when she and other interns came across a shocking find: letters from Jewish Holocaust survivors complaining that the city was forcing them to pay back taxes and late payment fines on property seized after they were deported to Nazi death camps.

“How, the survivors asked, could they be on the hook for taxes due while Hitler’s regime was trying to exterminate them? A typical response was: “The base fees and the fines for late payment must be satisfied, regardless of whether a third party, legally empowered or not, has for some time held the title to the building.”

“Following her discovery in 2011, Van den Berg waged a lonely fight against Amsterdam’s modern bureaucracy to have the travesty publicly recognized. Now, largely due to her efforts, Amsterdam officials are considering compensating Holocaust survivors for the taxes and possibly other obligations, including gas bills, they were forced to pay for homes that were occupied by Nazis or collaborators while the rightful owners were in hiding or awaiting death in the camps.” More

Note: Just because the Tea Party fetishizes the Revolution, doesn’t mean Lexington and Concord weren’t important. So let’s have a poem for the occasion:

Concord Hymn
By Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sung at the Completion of the Battle Monument, July 4, 1837

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood
And fired the shot heard round the world.

The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;
And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.

On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We set today a votive stone;
That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

Spirit, that made those heroes dare
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee.

This image, taken by an Apple map satellite, depicts a shadowy form of around 100 feet in length with something akin to flippers in the water of the Loch Ness. The image has been studied for six months by experts at the Official Loch Ness Monster Fan Club, the Club has concluded the shadow is most probably the Loch Ness Monster. This sighting is the first reported in 18 months, the longest that Nessie has been missing since 1925.

Point taken. But you’d still have to go for a non-center mass hit, since a ‘soft’ lead type Minie ball won’t breach modern armor. It’ll shatter a leg, but a proper thickness of Kevlar will block it.

Here’s a tip for the upcoming warm weather:
Keep pieces of papaya peel in your freezer. If you get stung by a bee or wasp, hold a piece of the papaya skin against the sting area. The papain enzyme will neutralize the venom resulting in almost immediate relief. Also, plain Adolph’s Meat Tenderizer made into a paste with water has the same effect since papain is the main ingredient.

Music, and art by Francine van Hove. I would love to find some prints by her; she captures these young women so wonderfully.

[Embedded content]

Personal disclosure: I did nude modeling for a women’s art class back in the ’70s.

And as an art student in the 70s I thank those like you who did model. Our school was very big on fundamentals. One big fundamental is the human body is one of the hardest things for an artist to draw. So, we had figure drawing 4 years and anatomy for 1 full year (2 semesters). Yes…art students learning anatomy. One of the big assignments of anatomy was drawing a skeleton front, back and sides and having to do acetate overlays of all the muscles on those skeleton views. Just like the muscle break downs clear overlays in a science/health book. You can’t draw the body if you don’t know all the lumps and bumps that make the shadowing and curvatures of the skin.

Between all the anatomy, color concept and figure drawing, over half my freshman class bailed out by the end of the year. I still remember the Dean of the School saying very early on…”take a look around, many of the people you see in your class today, will not be here for the duration of the work needed to get your degree.”

I’m still proud I got through it, and worked freelance for two years to help afford to go. Art school was a bitch cost wise for all the lab fees and the materials needed to do all the projects. It was art war!

We couldn’t have done it without the live nude models. And they were real pros too.

I had wasps nesting in the roller blind box above the terrace door. Every time I pulled on it, it turned into an angry wasp dispenser.

I’ve posted I have an old house. I see every species of wasp and hornet around here. When working outside, I always have a can of wasp spray. I’ve gotten pretty good at knowing how to work around them.

One time, I spent a day working outside and watching a mud duaber flying down to a wet drainage ditch I had going and then flying up near me to dump the mud on his little nest hanging on the brick just under the overhanging eve.

I see tons of black wasps too. Hornets scare me, because they seem more angry.

Bugs can be a fascinating study as your doing manual labor sitting on some scaffold taking a break. So industrious and playing way over their size.

Don’t steal from the American public by refusing to pay grazing fees for using federal lands for your herd. Don’t threaten public officials trying to enforce the rules that you have so publicly and brazenly ignored.

Don’t cloak yourself in patriotic fervor when you’re nothing more than a common criminal and thug.

Don’t surround yourself with militia and sovereign citizen types who have no problem shooting law enforcement who have jurisdiction to carry out warrants and legal orders of the courts.

Don’t try to spout off legal nonsense when there’s no law, constitution, or case that backs your worldview because it has been specifically repudiated by the courts of the state, and the nation.

I could go on, but facts, logic, and reasoning don’t matter to the Bundy nuts.

Amplify that angry buzz sound to get it real scary and I’ll take two.

By the way…ever hear a bunch of carpenter bees in wood? I have. Another fascinating little creature. Well, not little, and they fly like drunken sailors. I guess only the Queen can sting. The male drones just make noise and buzz dive you in numbers to scare you away.

And with that, time to go out into the urban jungle and strangle some weeds. And look at the bugs.

Reading an article about the Bundy-nuts encamped around Bundy HQ, it struck me that these people treat this whole caper as a combination hunting trip, camping trip and Civil War re-enactment. No deep reflection about what it means to threaten federal officers with firearms, and to support a whackjob intent on breaking the law.

Just a drive-by to put in a few good words for some wasps. We have those big scary looking ones that hang the disk of cells from the eaves of the house. They are incredibly calm and inoffensive. I don’t encourage them to build right in front of doors because it freaks people out, and a couple always manage to find their way into the house, but otherwise they are never any trouble-even when you’re on a ladder right next to their nest.
They can’t afford to go looking for trouble because they are single parents. If they die, that’s it. No one else will look after the young.
Hornets, including yellowjackets, I detest.

I had some damage on this old house from their cousins the black carpenter ant. They had worked over some of the roof of the front porch that was classic home for them for years, damp and under a sugar maple tree that touched the porch. Tree gone, and much wood replaced.

What disturbs me is how more and more reactionary they get. More and more you see Republican office holders/seekers who oppose abortion no exception as well as the opposition to equal pay for equal work. It’s why I’m deeply cynical about the Republican party moderating after Obama leaves. In the 80’s when the Dems were being clobbered at the polls, there was groundwork being done by people like Clinton to adapt the party. The Republican Party is changing for sure, it’s just getting more and more reactionary. The likely Republican nominee for Congress here is a guy who has twice said that Downs Syndrome is God’s punishment for abortion. He replaced another guy who said that he didn’t know how spousal rape was possible. That guy is my state senator.

These GOP assholes pass a whole lot of laws aimed at making them look “tough on crime” but what they really mean is tough on the poor and dark skinned. We all know that when push comes to shove, any middle or upper class white woman would suddenly be sympathetic or come down with a case of Affluenza.

It’s even more obvious in that clip with the dipshit blonde Republican talking about how law enforcement should expect Americans to fire back at them. She’d be calling for drone strikes and tanks if Bundy was anything other than a white man.

re: #359 Lidane

This one isn’t really about crime, though: This particular push is yet another attempt to outflank Roe vs. Wade. The US Supreme Court has made fairly clear that it will not entertain frontal assaults on Roe at the present time, and so those whose passion for opposing abortion exceeds reason have responded by trying to outflank the decision by “proving” that lower-class women are “murdering their babies”.

“Crime” and social issues have a large role, but Roe vs. Wade remains the main target.

Magical thinking. It’s no coincidence that they’re the same folks who think that the world was created out of whole cloth in its present form 6000 years ago.

They live in a fantasy world. America industrialized itself without government intervention. The interstate highway system was built without taxpayer money. Private citizens can threaten to shoot law enforcement if they’re white and defending a deadbeat who hasn’t paid what he owes for a few decades. Slavery would have ended on its own without a war. Jim Crow laws would have ended because people would have voted to end them. Etc.

It’s when they start getting elected and (a) they really are stupid, like Fiore or Walsh, et al, or (b) they’re too clever by half and smarter than they appear, like Cruz, and are just pandering for votes, that I get mad as hell at the total ignorance of those who elect them. Yeah declaring war on unions when they’re at their weakest in modern history and in a state that has never had a strong union presence is sooo courageous and yeah I’m sick of hearing about “lazy union workers” too. Still love the bumper sticker about the unions being the folks that brought you the weekend. We take so much for granted as a society especially in regards to things regarding our jobs.

Do we know that it was one of them or just the boyfriend? You’d be surprised at how many women expect a man who is not father to their children to “discipline” or otherwise deal with their children. It’s very common, and many times it ends up tragically, like this.

I see those stories and want to scream that these women can get dick anywhere—it’s finding a man who will treat their kids right that’s so difficult.

Etc.

This is a brilliant critique of the current conservative mindset, and the bolded is a spot-on description of the Bundy Ranch fiasco.

The war on TV show hosts continues

Famous television host in Pakistan shot by gunmen

Senior police officer Pir Mohammad Shah says a single gunman first opened fire on Mir’s car, followed by others who chased him on motorcycles. Karachi police chief Shahid Hayat told Geo that Mir suffered three gunshot wounds to the stomach and the upper legs, but was expected to survive.

Last year, authorities found a bomb under Mir’s car.

446 Killgore Trout  Apr 19, 2014 10:44:53am

More info: Hamid Mir wounded in Pakistan gun attack

Mr Mir’s brother, a leading investigative journalist, has accused the country’s intelligence agency, the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence), of orchestrating the attack, reports the BBC’s Shahzeb Jillani, in Karachi.

According to his brother, Mr Mir had recently told family and colleagues that he had received threats from the ISI because of his political views.

In 2012, the Pakistani Taliban tried to kill Mr Mir by planting half a kilogram (1lb) of explosives under his car outside his home in the capital, Islamabad.

But the remote-controlled bomb failed to go off.

The Taliban had threatened Mr Mir and other journalists for their coverage of the militants’ shooting of schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai.

Image: cute_rabbits_40-s700x525-120421-580.jpg

I got my grandkids rabbits once. A lady gave them to us outside a vet’s—a beautiful all white and a white with black markings. She said she found them on the road. So we took them home, built a hutch, etc but the kids left the door open and they took off a few weeks later. I hope they did OK. We had wild rabbits which were brown and much smaller around, but these were special.

Now I have only a ceramic rabbit (a lop-eared reading a book) on a table and another one on the balcony.

The … I started to say problem, but I think issue might be a better word choice, is that when a senator uses a legal term to describe someone it approaches put-up-or-shut-up time.

It’s an accusation of a crime, and failure to at least attempt following through can lead to civil consequences.

Now I’d like to see the follow through anyway. It is (along with the a-holes who use terror against women’s health clinics that offer or support abortion as an option) domestic terrorism. It would, I think, force those a-holes to realize just how much of a minority they really are. Oh, sure there are a lot of people who nominally agree. But when push comes to shove they’re not willing to cross that particular line.

Documents detail another delayed GM recall

bigstory.ap.org

DETROIT (AP) — Government documents show that General Motors waited years to recall nearly 335,000 Saturn Ions for power steering failures despite getting thousands of consumer complaints and warranty repair claims.

“Additionally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration didn’t seek a recall of the 2004-2007 compact cars even though it opened an investigation more than two years ago. The government’s auto safety watchdog found the problem caused 12 crashes and two injuries.

“The documents, posted on the NHTSA’s website Saturday, show yet another delay by GM in recalling unsafe vehicles. It’s also another example of government regulators reacting slowly to a safety problem despite being alerted by consumers and the company’s warranty data.” More

re: #385 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

when god tells you to, you must follow

This is an area where unfortunately it’s easy to offend people. But if a person identifies themselves as belonging to a particular religion, I’m fascinated with the idea of to what extent he or she REALLY BELIEVES ideas that are associated with that same religion.

The obvious examples are verses from the Bible or the Koran. I’m sure we can all think of plenty of “interesting” verses, and many of us would shake our heads or have a good laugh, but what if someone REALLY takes them SERIOUSLY?

When I hear a terrible story like the one about the “mother” in Oregon, all that really matters is the tragedy of the son, but I view this as a caution that REAL BELIEF in BAD IDEAS can have bad consequences.

(Trying not to offend, but think about the following in terms of REALLY REALLY REALLY believing them: (a) I’m a member of God’s chosen people, (b) the world will end in the next few decades with an apocalypse in the Middle East, (c) if I detonate this bomb vest when on a bus filled with nonbelievers, I’ll go to paradise, and I’ll be able to invite my family to join me.)
