Poor People’s Lives Are Getting Shorter

thinkprogress.org

“Life expectancy is rising for those at the top of the distribution of individuals ranked by alternative measures of socio-economic status, but it is stagnate or declining for those at the bottom,” the researchers conclude.

“It’s not entirely surprising that poverty is an indicator of a shorter life span. Economic insecurity has a long list of negative effects on physical and mental health. People living in poverty are less likely to have access to quality food and clean air, and they’re more likely to struggle to afford the medical care they need.

“What’s most concerning is the fact that poverty is worsening, and extreme income inequality continues to widen the gulf between the richest and the poorest sectors of the country. There’s compelling evidence that failing to enact policies to lift struggling Americans out of poverty will very literally shorten their lifespans — at the same time as lawmakers attempt to raise the age to qualify for Medicare or Social Security benefits, based on the erroneous assumption that everyone is living longer.”

Yeah, all that talk about pushing the age of retirement to 70 or higher is a bunch of baloney when you’ve already been working 50 yrs by the time you turn 65. I was ready at 62—between working full time and raising kids, I was exhausted and needed the rest. Too bad, though, I had no money to jet around the world. : )

The young lady on the cans is very good. She is so effortless which really comes through in her cymbal playing and snare. Great little rhythm section.

Why do media conformist yuppies like to insult people they are about to ask for directions? This seems to happen so often it must be some kind of debased cultural meme among the jumped-up suburban peasantry. Perhaps they are copying a a favorite TV character in a doomed effort to display their wit and superior (albeit imaginary) social status. I might ask them but they seem to spend a lot of time wandering around lost in the hinterland somewhere. They also seem to have trouble understanding the whole cause/effect thing.

WW - you were lamenting the lack of bicycle posts the other day, so here’s one:

About a month ago, I checked the chains on all my bikes. On the Battaglin the 0.75 dropped right in, so I replaced it (also got new cables). The Ritchey was still not even close to 0.75, but the Bianchi was getting there. I figured two more Sunday rides would do it. Well, I was ALMOST right. On the second Sunday ride, 2 miles from home, I hit God’s Own Pothole, and suddenly I’m dragging the chain, neatly Quick-UnLinked. Grrrrrrr…..

That’s not the point of the story, though.

I got a new chain, shortened it to length put it on. Took it for an afternoon ride. Whenever I was in the small ring, especially when pushing hard, as my left foot came over the top, I’d here *grrrriiicck*. Same with the right foot, only quieter. I trimmed the front derailleur - no difference. Shifted gears at the back - no difference. Checked my chain catcher - nowhere near. Checked the crank bolts - tight. Checked the pedal rotation - easy. Checked the chainring bolts - tight.

I figured it must be the small chainring was worn out.

Finally get around to taking it to the new shop that the guy who used to run the really good bike shop in my town is now running. The Wrench takes it for a spin - he hears it too, but he doesn’t think it could be the chainring at only 5000 miles. He checks the rear derailleur hanger and adjusts it. Takes is for another spin - same noise. Tightens all the chainring bolts, breaking one. Spends 10 minutes finding another because it’s an FSA crank and they use those stupid Torx bolts. Takes it for a spin - same noise. Finally digs out a new FSA 34 tooth chainring and puts it on. Takes it for a spin - noise gone.

The small chainring HAD worn out. Sometimes, the customer IS right.

But it gave me a chance to look around the shop - Bianchis, Cervelos, Wiliers, and a Parlee in the window. Very nice! All really small, though.

But I appreciate the effort.

BTW, those Torx CR bolts can be replaced with any CR bolt, unless you need it to match. I hate breaking stuff on customer’s bikes.

I got out for a nice 40 mile spin, took my “fast” bike, the Rans F5. Rans is a company in Hays Kansas that makes lightweight sport aircraft and recumbent / crank forward bikes. I actually went to high school with the founders of the company.

This isn’t my F5, but pretty close. They came orginally with 650b wheels, and since those are hard to find, I build a set of 26 inch road wheels for it, had to replace the brakes with slightly longer reach ones, but it was an easy fix.

Rans F5

And yes, it does take some practice to learn to ride lying on your back with your feet up higher than your hips. And clipless pedals aren’t an option, they are required.

At that point it was newly re-built, the frame having been stripped of its original faded yellow/blue Early 90’s fade paintjob. I didn’t even ask the painter to do the pantographs, but he did anyway.

BUT, he painted the inlets in the flag thingie that Battaglins have brazed onto the top tube backward, so that rather than being an Italian flag, I think it’s maybe Burundi.

Lest we forget: The Oklahoma City bombing was 19 years ago today.
Official FBI page

I was at home and saw the initial TV news bulletin, which simply reported a very large explosion in downtown Oklahoma City. At first I suspected a gas leak or perhaps some freakish accident like a fertilizer truck explosion. I remember there were no reports of deaths for quite a while and some of the talking heads were pretty optimistic that casualties might be low. Then some of the dust cleared and the demolished building was clearly visible. I realized immediately that the optimistic initial reports were not going to hold up. It seemed incredible that someone would do this on purpose, but I knew the date was the anniversary of the horrendous climax of the Waco siege. The worst started to seem plausible, then likely, and finally proven.
I also remember that a British tabloid published the Pulitzer prize winning photo of a firefighter carrying a fatally injured baby out of the wreckage and captioned it “In the Name of Islam.”

When I was in college, I used to run (it was all the rage in those days). The best I ever did was 10 miles, and that was the result of feeling like I could go on forever on an out-and-back run.

A 10 mile ride, OTOH, is really short. I’ve been taking it easy this spring, only doing 35 miles on Sundays and 17 when I can get out in the later afternoons after work. It’s been lots of fun observing the ‘nanoclimates’ around here. In town, the daffodils are long gone. But over in Woodside, under the trees, there are still a few stands of them. Irises some places, poppies in others, and along a one-lane back road, rose bushes gone wild, growing like vines on a fence and up a pine tree, covered in little white, or slightly larger peach colored flowers.

65 CuriousLurker  Apr 19, 2014 2:30:42pm

Wooho—my Amos Oz book, How to Cure a Fanatic, is here! I finally feel like someone is going to explain the outlines of the I-P conflict to me in a way that doesn’t strain credibility, I may not like or agree with everything he says, but I’m looking forward to reading his thoughts nonetheless.

Anyway, here’s a short excerpt from the first chapter for anyone who might be interested. The entire book is less than 100 pages as it basically consists of two essays followed by an interview with Oz.

Gonna go curl up and read now, Later, lizards.

I remember that day. I first heard about it on the radio. The report mentioned, “Two men of Middle Eastern extraction,” or some such, “were seen leaving the area.”

I said out loud, “Nope. It was local boys.” Even then I knew Islamists are not going to blow up a Federal building in Oklahoma, and even back then I knew there were Americans who hated the country they lived in beyond words. I knew it was right-wingers as well because the far left is almost non-existent in America.

On a completely random topic, my parents’ church named their youth group Stormfront. I didn’t have the heart to tell them why that is such a spectacularly bad name for a group comprised primarily of white Christian teenagers in the heart of central Indiana, a state well-known for its Klan connections.

It’s possible, but unlikely. I’ve mentioned this before, but most of the churches of my acquaintance tend to be incredibly naive. I’m guessing it just sounded cool and nobody actually has any clue about the darker parts of the Internet.

I really WOULD let them know, politely and respectfully, that probably isn’t a good name, let them know why. Something like “I’m sure you’re not aware, since you’re not racist jerks, but the major website for Neo-Nazi Racists is called Stormfront. I know you’re not that type of people, but you may want to change it”.

Yes, I can be diplomatic at times, but it burns a lot.

re: #104 thedopefishlives

Wings are one I’ve struggled with, specifically, how to get them crispy. Do you pan-fry them?

nope…. I section them out, put them on a broiler pan, and hit them with a good hit of my seasoned salt mix (salt, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, oregano, thyme, basil, black pepper, paprika).

I set the oven at 500 degrees (bake, not broil), let it warm up for at least 15 minutes. Wings go in for 25 minutes, take them out, turn them over in the pan, and back in for another 10.

Out and into a quick toss with sauce if desired.

The high temp really helps pull the fat out, the broiler pan lets the fat drain away, and they get a nice skin, are fully cooked, but are still moist inside. They aren’t quite as crisp as if you had pan-fried them, but it’s a lot easier and less mess. I’d rate them as being 90% as good as Buffalo Wild Wings, and 100x better than Hooters. (I’m in the naked, not breaded, wing camp).

Give it a try,

You should try doing the America’s Test Kitchen take on the Zuni High Roast chicken with that, where you cover the roasting pan base with aluminum foil and then adding a layer of seasoned potatoes. The fat from the chicken drips onto the potatoes making them extra delicious, and since they soak up the fat you don’t have to worry about smoking out your kitchen.

You’re most welcome… Here is the spice mix I use.. Got it from my Dad, don’t know if he developed it, or got it from someplace else. He’s 84, still very active, and more liberal than I am in some areas. love him dearly.

Reality Based Steve’s Dads Seasoned Salt Mix

2 tsp Salt (kosher is MUCH better than regular)
2 tsp Paprika (I use regular, smoked tends to be a bit overpowering)
1 tsp Dry Mustard
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Onion Powder
1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper (or a bit more if you want)
1/2 tsp Black Pepper
*1/2 tsp Oregano
*1/2 tsp Thyme
*1/2 tsp Basil
*(or 1/2 Tablespoon mixed italian herbs)

Much better than most of the Seasoning mixes, this adds a lot of flavor, not just makes it salty.

I build a new set this winter to work to my strengths and weaknesses. 12 Degree driver, cut a bit shorter than is the modern standard, but tip weighted to keep it feeling the same. 4 and 7 woods, 4 and 5 hybrids, and 4 wedges, Pitching, Approach, Sand and Lob. There isn’t a club in the bag that I don’t feel confident with, and that wasn’t true when I carried a more ‘tradtional’ setup.

Going out tomorrow for 18 with some friends to a course that plays to my strength. Not very long, narrow, premium on short game and thinking.

The forum users there sometimes swamp other forums and troll them, and do a lot of ‘trolling’ in MMOs, though I’d argue that they improve the play experience by doing so.

One day the gang at Something Awful ran across us and did a short piece denigrating our crew in the most impressively awful way. We quickly patched it up so only registered users could view the threads, but the damage was done.

EVE is one of the few MMOs that allow really emergent player-driven experiences, and so it’s a natural place for a bunch of troll-ish dudes. They became a huge power in the game for awhile, I don’t know what they’re like now.

In a rigid MMO, they just come off as griefers, but in one with true competition, like EVE, it’s really interesting to see how they effect the economic and political landscape.

Seeing as GG is getting together with Noam Chomsky in May, you might want to read this from last year.

Glenn Greenwald airbrushes the bigotry and extremism of Noam Chomsky

cifwatch.com

In many ways Greenwald has patterned his rhetoric on Chomsky, but with more nastiness and ad hominem. Greenwald is the crass version of Chomsky.

Good luck with discrediting Greenwald for associating with Chomsky. They share the same fanclub already.

Not for the Greenwaldnistas.

I still find Chomsky interesting on occasion. I like younger Chomsky better than older Chomsky but he’s always been sort of a douche and is often very very very very wrong about a lot of stuff. He’s not without merit.

Developed a deep, structured, dislike for Chomsky before he did any politics.

Glenn Greenwald has no fixed political views beyond the demand that the world acknowledge the brilliance of Glenn Greewald and provide for the convenience of Glenn Greenwald.

And there’s also the difference between an academic who seems to throw a little more caution to the wind as he ages, and a failed, sleazy attorney which Greenwald was.
