ABC’s This Week Easter Show: Gays Are Going to Hell, Civilization Is Doomed

Today, ABC’s “This Week” chose to celebrate Easter by hosting a panel of extreme religious right crackpots who say gay people are going to hell unless they repent. And no, I’m not kidding.

As a part of a special Easter week discussion on religion, Graham told ABC News’ Martha Raddatz that gays could go heaven if they repent.

“Maybe gays that are watching want to know, ‘Can God forgive me? Or can I go to heaven as a gay person?’ Absolutely. But the same for any of us. We have to repent of our sins in turn. A person cannot stay in adultery and be accepted by God. You’ll have to repent,” said Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Happy Easter, everyone!

Can Gays Rebrand Themselves? An ABC panel discussion…

Seems very typical evangelical preaching, heard in thousands of pulpits across this country weekly.

I get it, if we allow gay marriage, then people will at some point find themselves committing GAY ADULTERY. We cannot allow that much SIN in one place…

‘Gays are baaad, unkay’ sez the believers in Zombie Day.

Seems legit.

You ever notice that the people who talk the most about “saving” others are generally self-serving douchebags who seem to get off on looking down their noses at “sinners”?

These talking head shows are laboriously lazy minded, a tiresome affair of glitz; the make-up artists have more there there than the hosts and guests.

This sort of homophobic, over-righteous drivel is becoming entirely “mainstream”, at least in the media and in public/political discourse, it is no wonder that it was deemed acceptable Easter Sunday programming

Why, yes, I HAD noticed that. What good is religion, after all, if it doesn’t give you an otherwise unmerited sense of superiority?

There is nothing said in these latter-day evangelical proclamations that hasn’t been said before, somewhere/when during the past millennium.

What has changed, I suspect, is that we, the American public, are now less religious than we’ve ever been.

Our “American” (English colonial) society was founded, in a significant fraction, by highly religious people, some of them quite fanatical.

It’s taken almost 400 years, but finally a large enough segment of us aren’t so keen on the old religious ways anymore.

17 Charles Johnson  Apr 20, 2014 3:16:54pm

Notice how Graham sleazes around what he’s really saying - he doesn’t use the word hell, he say gays can “absolutely” go to heaven, all they have to do is repent.

The unvarnished version of what he’s saying is that if you love a person of the same sex, you’re going to spend eternity in horrific torment. But hey, you had a chance to repent.

From my new/current favorite author, Amos Oz, who I think totally nails it in terms of the mentality of fanatics:

In fact, often the fanatic is more interested in you than in himself. He wants to save your soul, he wants to redeem you, he wants to liberate you from sin, from error, from smoking, from your faith or from your faithlessness, he wants to improve your eating habits, or to cure you of your drinking or voting habits. The fanatic cares a great deal for you; he is always either falling on your neck because he truly loves you or else he is at your throat in case you prove to be unredeemable. And, in any case, topographically speaking, falling on your neck and being at your throat are almost the same gesture.

One way or another, the fanatic is more interested in you than in himself, for the simple reason that the fanatic has very little self or no self at all. Osama bin Laden’s heirs do not just hate the West. It’s not that simple. Rather, I think they want to save your souls; they want to liberate you, us, from our awful values, from materialism, from pluralism, from democracy, from freedom of speech, from women’s liberation … all these, the Islamic fundamentalists maintain, are bad for your health.

Bin Laden’s immediate target may have been New York, or Madrid, but his goal was to turn moderate, pragmatic Muslims into “true” believers, into his kind of Muslim. Islam, in bin Laden’s view, was weakened by “American values,” and to defend Islam, you must not just hit the West and hit it hard, you must eventually convert the West. Peace will prevail only when the world is converted not to Islam, but to the most fundamentalist and fierce and rigid form of Islam. It will be good for you. Bin Laden loved you; by his way of thinking, September 11 was a labor of love. […]

Sex was of particular concern. Outlawed were masturbation, fornication, adultery, sodomy, buggery, and every other sexual practice that inched off the line of straight sex as approved by the Bible. The term “sodomy” was applied to homosexual behavior; “buggery” to bestiality.

[…]

In 1642, Edward Preston was sentenced to be publicly whipped at both Plymouth and Barnstable “for his lewd practices tending to sodomy with Edward Mitchell, and pressing John Keene thereunto (if he would have yielded).” Keene, who had reported the crime, was required to watch the punishment because he was suspected of “not being without fault himself.” No death penalty here, since the actions of Preston and Mitchell only “tended toward sodomy.”

Saw the following while taking a walk today. I was up behind the Art Museum in Philadelphia taking photos in a sculpture garden since the cherries and plums were still in bloom there. Walking onto a paved overlook towards the top section I saw a picnic set up on a small semi-secluded stretch of lawn off to one side.

A spread blanket, a picnic basket, loaf of bread, bottle of wine, and a guitar.

But no people.

A little odd, and the layout was attractive enough I thought about taking a photo of it just for the heck of it. About then I also noticed that a man with a camera was lurking around an outcrop a little further on. Ambush photography? So I hung out over on the overlook for a minute or two to see what was going on.

Right afterwards two joggers appeared. A couple. And the man proposed to the woman right there while their photographer friend took pictures.

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who recently has emerged from the political wilderness, will host his third annual policy summit this summer in Park City, Utah. The private gathering will be an important moment for several potential Republican presidential contenders, providing an opportunity for them to introduce themselves to Romney’s network.

On Sunday, The Washington Post obtained a partial list of the more than 200 people scheduled to attend the conference, which will take place June 12-14. It features a mix of politicos, Wall Street titans, former government officials, entrepreneurs, and even sports figures, such as Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who is slated to deliver a talk.

Black and White

I prefer the Black & White a lot - but from me that’s pretty much a given. What I like in this case is that you’re able to bring out the details of the background without losing the highlights of the flame.

But in losing the color you lose a lot of important data about the fire - those colors and flame shapes are specific to temperatures and materials and have deep meaning to anyone even slightly familiar with metallurgy.

That said, I think that for your images with flame what would work even better is to keep them in color but do the digital equivalent of burning in the background details a bit more. In a classic silver print you could cover the flames themselves for a moment to give the area outside of the fire a longer exposure. I’m sure something like that could be done to bring up the background a bit more while maintaining the so very meaningful color of the flame.

Hope this helps.

I watched the first episode of the 24 reboot on Amazon Prime, and they’re doing the same thing with the UN blue helmet guy.

I understand that there’s a plot to advance and not every character is going to get rounded out into something recognizable as a human being, but these kind of go beyond tired cliches or even normal caricatures. They just seem like examples of really bad, exploitative writing, insulting to the viewer.

I stopped watching 24 that season where they nuked LA. Once that happened, I kind of didn’t care what else went on. Even though it was “just a little nuke” and “only 20,000 people died” WTF.

No, these are actually from Einbinder, who have branched out from flypaper. They’re hoping you’ll gradually come to trust their ingots, as you’ve learned to trust their flypaper over the course of three generations.

Even otherwise well regarded media outlets publish idiotic headlines.

Such as this one, from boston.com:

A provocative new theory of Easter

It’s just another interview with Bart Ehrman about his latest book.

Only two problems with the headline:
1) Ehrman’s book is not a “theory”;
2) the ideas are not “new”.

KMSP-TV reported Friday that 52-year-old pastor Victor Barnard of the River Road Fellowship church kept a stable of women and girls for his sexual pleasure, women who he called “The Maidens.”

Two of the women, now adults, came forward earlier this year saying that at the ages of 12 and 13, their parents sent them to live with Barnard at a residence called Shepherd’s Camp near Finlayson, MN where they joined the Maidens, who numbered about 10 at the time.

Never really liked 24. Far-fetched, illogical, even stupid at times. The show that totally screwed the shark for me was the one where a nuclear bomb goes off in Los Angeles and for the rest of the show there’s no mention of it at all, and no particular problems for anyone as a result. It was so ridiculous I just said “fuck this” and never watched it again.

My main problem with it was the whitewashing of torture. That wasn’t just unforgivably amoral, they knew it was antithetical to reality when they wrote it.

I’ve only seen the first season of 24 , which apparently was not as bad/extreme as the later seasons.

What struck me at the time was how powerful the effect of audience point of view was. Viewers saw scenes of the bad guys in action, so the audience knew there was something there for torture by Bauer et al. to find.

The show would have been very different if viewers had no more information than the anti-terrorist protagonists, and were confronted with torturing people in a fog of war situation.

And really horrific nasty torture too. Wasn’t there one episode where Jack Bauer tortures somebody by drilling holes in them with an electric drill? That was another big “wait a fucking minute” minute for me.

Yeah, I think that was one of the many “enhanced interrogation” techniques used by Jack Bauer over the years.

I don’t mind violence in TV and movies at all. Horror is one of my favorite genres. Except when it verges on torture porn. After a few years watching 24, I got sick of it because it kept moving in that direction.

In one episode, Bauer’s team captured a guy and held him in an interrogation room. You thought Jack might torture him but he just walked in and shot the guy dead on the spot in order to scare some other bad guy.

The thing that strikes me about most of these images is that they’re kind of inherently missing some context. They’re not contrasty, you’ve got good tones on the the exposed bits, the flames, crucibles, gold, etc but the backgrounds are all necessarily very dark to black to expose for the radiant subject matter. The result is very isolating.

Maybe that’s what you want, maybe it’s even for the best. But since I assume you’re using a tripod anyway for all these shots I’d like to see what a little bit of HDR does. Try taking some before shots of the setup at various exposures and build up a composite image by blending layers.

The undeniable point that 24 was pushing damaging propaganda to support Bush administration policy was reached in 2007 when the US Army invited Kiefer Sutherland to speak at West Point just so he could counter the message his show was selling:

24 star Kiefer Sutherland has accepted an invitation from the U.S. military to teach army cadets it is wrong to torture prisoners.

Sutherland, who plays agent Jack Bauer on the show, has agreed to talk to cadets at the West Point military academy in New York state after army chiefs claimed the show’s torture scenes are influencing its newest recruits.

The thing about the show that was probably most damaging to the national dialog on torture is that it sold the plausibility of the immediate, existential crisis. Where you KNOW there’s a nuclear / chemical / biological bomb in the city, or some assassination plot is in progress, and you KNOW that they guy you have in custody has information that can lead you to it.

The entire setup was so elaborately contrived to sell the necessity of extraordinary measures that the ideology behind it was obvious.

re: #75 William Barnett-Lewis

Good suggestions., thanks.

Even Ezekiel 16:49 only mentions Sodom. Shiplord’s point is that the rising action in Genesis 19 all takes place in Sodom, that’s where Lot lives, where the angels posing as itinerant poor people meet him, where the crowd assembles, etc. One can read Genesis 18 and infer that the two town’s sins are identical, but this isn’t actually stated outright. It was a totally non-biblical “nuns’ story” in our school that the cities are under the Dead Sea. That’s why it was dead.

And we should emulate CHINA’S labor laws?

Only some of those labor laws. Not the 1 child only policy, or birth control. Or government health care. Or the taxes.

No, they just want to drive down workplace protections, eliminate the minimum wage, and fleece the rubes. Same as it has always been.

They want to undo every worker protection or program passed since 1932.

It’s a compelling example of self-propagandizing in action. After 9/11 I think it was inevitable that 24 or something like it would be produced as part of the collective madness of the times.

The first time Gomorrah is mentioned in Genesis 19 God is raining sulfer down on it.

If Gomorrah were evil, like Sodom allegedly was, there’d be some sexual position or approach called ‘Gomorramy’.

Fox’s Bolling: We Should Emulate China With No Labor Laws Or Minimum Wage

[Embedded content]

Some quick rejoinders after watching that segment:
1. Everyone but the old guy in the white shirt is an idiot, and I’m not too sure about him.
2. Despite Bolling’s opinion, China does have a minimum wage law, which is not enforced very rigidly.
3. Workers in China do work very hard, because if they don’t, or if they miss a day, come in late, or get sick, they will lose their job.
4. Workers in China are beginning to rebel. No labor unions yet, but give them a couple of decades more.
5. Most Chinese workers work 6 days a week, often for 12 hours a day (especially factory workers). They get one week off for Spring Festival, and a few long weekends scattered throughout the year.
6. China produces a lot of stuff because there are a lot of Chinese. They are not necessarily more productive per capita than American workers doing similar jobs.
7. The dark-haired chick in the green dress has not been paying attention to Germany’s employment situation. Its economy is better than ours, IIRC.

Barbara Ehrenreich: I’m an Atheist, But Don’t Rule Out “Mystical Experiences”

Barbara Ehrenreich, the best-selling author of Nickel and Dimed: The (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream, is generally known for reportage on subjects such as the minimum wage and the rights of workers. But this month she has released a new book that is less a change of pace than a step in an entirely different direction.

Living With a Wild God: A Nonbeliver’s Search for the Truth About Everything is Ehrenreich’s personal story of mystical experiences that she says first occurred when she was a girl. It is also a critique of science for failing to adequately investigate experiences like her own. The book has aroused controversy and discussion, in part because it comes from such an unexpected source.

That’s what I’ve always called them. It’s purely because Obama is a black man - if he were a white Republican, without changing anything else, they’d be orgasmically happy with him.

The Bundys are apparently settling in for a long season—they are recruiting replacement bozos for rotation on months to come. Also soliciting supplies and equipment. Interestingly, all ‘security’ volunteers must place themselves under control of an Oathkeeper from New Hampshire.

Feds should just arrest and charge as many as they have evidence on as they rotate out or go into town. Hit ‘em hard, scoping federal employees and kidnapping charges for detaining BLM agents against their will. Build up a RICO case against both the ranch and the Oathkeepers, then take all their toys, guns, computers, vehicles, and any homes in which the conspiracies have been discussed and furthered.

Hopefully the feds have people inside already gathering evidence and federal district attorneys constructing a file.

Once the ranch and the Oathkeepers are named under RICO indictments the feds can probably prevent any FDA licensed slaughterhouses from processing their cattle. Also freeze all their bank accounts and then cordon off the entire area surrounding the ranch. Starve ‘em out.

If they all have AR-type rifles, then perhaps the answer is to see if there’s any chance of blowing dirt or sand anytime soon. If so, then load up the raid team with rifles with gas-pistons instead of M4s. Then just watch the wingnuts’ guns jam when the sand and dirt gets in ‘em. [evil grin]

Source: ‘Massive’ attack targets al Qaeda in Yemen

An operation targeting al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is under way in Yemen, a high-level Yemeni government official who is being briefed on the strikes told CNN on Monday.

The official said that the scale of the strikes against AQAP is “massive and unprecedented” and that at least 30 militants have been killed. The operation involved Yemeni commandos who are now “going after high-level AQAP targets,” the official said.

240 Killgore Trout  Apr 20, 2014 7:14:37pm

Interesting…

The predawn strikes targeted a mountain ridge in the southern province of Abyan, the official said. It’s the same area where scores of followers of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula had gathered recently to hear from Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the head of the terrorist network’s Yemeni branch and the global organization’s “crown prince,” the official said.

272 Lidane  Apr 20, 2014 8:09:51pm

Oh, it got so much better. The whole episode starts off talking about the age of the Earth. Hence the debunking of the Young Earth nonsense of a 6000 year old planet.

The rest of the episode largely centered on telling the story of Clair Patterson, who not only aged the Earth based on uranium-lead dating, but his discovery of unnatural and inconsistent levels of lead sent him on a crusade to get rid of lead in things like gasoline and paint because they were a danger to the public health. The show didn’t flinch from talking about scientists being paid by industry to confuse the public by doing things like claiming that lead was naturally occurring and that there was no public health risk, etc.

I could almost hear the same exact arguments being made about the paid science shills that are trying to obscure AGW and other public health issues. It was great. There’s going to be lots of derp about this one for sure.

re: #99 goddamnedfrank

The thing that strikes me about most of these images is that they’re kind of inherently missing some context. They’re not contrasty, you’ve got good tones on the the exposed bits, the flames, crucibles, gold, etc but the backgrounds are all necessarily very dark to black to expose for the radiant subject matter. The result is very isolating.

Maybe that’s what you want, maybe it’s even for the best. But since I assume you’re using a tripod anyway for all these shots I’d like to see what a little bit of HDR does. Try taking some before shots of the setup at various exposures and build up a composite image by blending layers.

Interesting! The idea to take this further is to bring two 500 watt lights in to bring the background detail and light up. We have not been using a tripod as the shutter is so fast it’s irrelevant. I don’t bring the background up digitally as that really brings up the ugly noise. Beyond what can be fixed short of masking and layering. I have to run a very high ISO, as high as 4000 to get that shutter speed that keeps the righ detail and gossamer character of the flames intact.
