Life With Gohmert: Eric Holder Should Be in a Cell

Right Wing Watch listens to the disturbing right wing rambling of the Family Research Council so you don’t have to, and today we find the Dumbest Man in Congress, Louie “Terror Babies” Gohmert, calling for Eric Holder to be arrested.

Louie’s gonna teach Holder he can’t get away with casting aspersions on his asparagus.

Gohmert: My thought was the only thing that we can probably do is defund any area of the Justice Department that is in contempt, that won’t produce the documents that were demanded. But apparently another option would be to direct a sergeant at arms, somebody comes into our jurisdiction at Capitol Hill, you restrain them until such time, and there is a cell there on Capitol Hill.

repeat from downstairs: He understands enough to know that there are a lot of people who hate the Federal Gummint, especially in its acronymic manifestations: FBI, CIA, ATF, BLM, IRS, EPA, OSHA, etc. and is gonna milk it for all it’s worth.

Gohmert was Chief Justice of Texas’ 12th Court of Appeals Asparagus, and a state district judge for almost ten years. Imagine being tried in his courtroom.

Gohmert is a big fan of origami

7 lawhawk  Apr 21, 2014 11:03:20am

Just enough knowledge to be dangerous. Gohmert knows that he’s going to get nowhere with this, but it will sure as heck raise campaign contributions for him and his fellow wingnuts. He mentions Holder’s name, and stands back to watch the donations flow.

At least with the current Congress as constituted. If the Senate goes to the GOP, the odds of impeachment against any members of the Obama Administration will rise significantly. Holder would definitely be among those the GOP would love to dispatch, or at least tie up in legal knots.

I think that’s a certainty, because they know the base would love it, and it would really get them pumped up for 2016 when they’ll be going for control of the whole government.

I would love to see the GOP try and impeach POTUS going into a presidential election year. That would be a hoot. I’d especially love to see them try and explain any high crimes and misdemeanors that don’t amount to Being President While Black.

They’ll try to claim that Fast and Furious, the IRS treatment of nonprofit political entities, and Benghazi are sufficient for articles of impeachment. That’s even though there’s no actual facts to support any of it - even with Issa doing his best to muddy the waters and try to get Lois Lerner to perjure herself on the IRS situation.

Blue states watch more porn than red states. Except for Kansas.

The Washington Post’s Chris Ingraham helpfully made a scatterplot showing each state’s Pornhub consumption rate against the vote share Barack Obama got in 2012:

Overall, the trend line suggests that page views rise with support for Obama. But far and away the biggest Pornhub fan among the states was Kansas, with 194 page views per capita over twelve months. That’s over 60 percent greater than the red state average, and nearly 17 percent greater than the biggest Pornhub superfan among the blue states

Dumbest man on the Internet strikes again.

Considering that there are hundreds of thousands of rape kits untested for lack of funds (some peg the number at 400,000+), is it surprising that Detroit, whose fiscal situation was so bad they declared bankruptcy, has untested kits sitting around?

Congress finally acted last year to go and reduce the backlog.

Texas has a bunch. Tennessee too.

Oh, and as for the Detroit situation, the Detroit PD and local prosecutors should be brought up on misconduct charges for not doing enough to get those kits tested and leaving the whole situation a total mess. In fact, it appears that they were dumped in a warehouse and only recently have some of the kits been tested.

The problem in Detroit is aggravated because the Detroit Police Department, which mishandled the rape kits to begin with, wants to help clear the backlog, but Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy doesn’t want them involved. She says rape victims whose kits were lost don’t trust the DPD and that makes their work counterproductive.

Worthy’s office is in line for a share of the $35 million in rape kit backlog relief money President Barack Obama announced in his recent budget, and Gov. Rick Snyder’s office has also promised her money to help with the rape kit investigations. But Worthy couldn’t say recently how much additional help she needs to handle the extra work, let alone how much she is likely to get.

Police malfeasance. Prosecutorial misconduct. Looking the other way on sexual assault victims. Lack of resources. Lack of priority.

Take your pick. Detroit might have a bunch of cases like these, but they’re hardly alone. And the backlog of untested kits happened in GOP dominated states too.

There’s a paucity on hard data about how many kits are untested or are backlogged. That has to change, and there needs to be transparency on the process to let the public know that law enforcement is prioritizing going after those carrying out sexual assaults.

In places like NYC, where the backlog was eliminated over the span of a few years, the city’s review of the backlogged data resulted in catching several serial rapists and it works to reduce crime.

Every red stater isn’t a Republican, nor is every blue stater a Dem. Even if the Alexa numbers were accurate, server stats cannot possibly tell you what political party a given visitor is affiliated with. FFS—the stupid, it burns.

So it simply takes association: remaining in a state that has not voted GOP.

Whatever happened to engaging with people and trying to win them over to your point of view? The current approach seems to be to brand those who disagree with GOP policy as moochers, welfare frauds, sluts, libtards, terrorist sympathizers, union thugs, communists, fascists, losers, pornographers, etc….

And then wonder why people are turning their back on them in disgust.

Pretty much a choice of whoever is doing the cooking. Leaving out the garlic still leaves lots of tasty herbs for flavoring.

Yemeni forces, reportedly backed by US drone strikes, hit al-Qaeda militants for a second straight day Monday in what Yemen officials said was an assault on a major base of the terror group hidden in the remote southern mountains. The government said 55 militants were killed so far.

Putin’s plans for Crimea? Casinos!

RUSSIA PLANS CASINO BOOM IN CRIMEA

Russian President Vladimir Putin has presented a draft law to create a gambling zone in Crimea. By law casinos are restricted to four special areas in Russia, all a long way from Moscow. Now Crimea will become the fifth area, under Russian President Putin’s plan. So far only Azov City, a coastal area east of Crimea, has opened casinos.

Russian President has announced ambitious plans to develop the Crimean economy. It will be up to the new authorities in Crimea to decide the location and extent of the planned casino zone.

By the way, since you’re here I wanted to point something else out to you. Remember yesterday when I quoted a portion of Amos Oz’s article on fanaticism and you followed up by saying this?

Your response made me twitch and therefore choose to ignore you because it made it clear that you were only trying to (as gdf said) shoehorn in your POV.

The portion I posted was from the last two paragraphs of page 2, and the first paragraph of page 3—if you’d bothered to click the link I provided and continue reading (or better yet read it from the beginning), halfway through page 4 you would’ve encountered this (emphasis mine):

If I could only compress a sense of humor into capsules and persuade entire populations to swallow my humor pills, thus immunizing everybody against fanatics, I might qualify one day for the Nobel Prize in medicine, not in literature. But just listen to me! The idea of compressing a sense of humor into capsules, the very idea of making other people swallow my humor pills for their own good, thus curing them of their trouble, is already slightly contaminated with fanaticism. Be careful: Fanaticism is extremely catching, more contagious than any virus. You might easily contract fanaticism even as you are trying to defeat or combat it.

You have only to read a newspaper or watch the television news to see how easily people may become anti-fanatic fanatics, anti-fundamentalist zealots, anti-jihad crusaders. Eventually, if we cannot defeat fanaticism, perhaps we can at least contain it a little bit. As I have said, the ability to laugh at ourselves is a partial cure; the ability to see ourselves as others see us is another medicine. […]

US: ‘Indications’ of new chemical weapons use in Syria

“We have indications of the use of a toxic industrial chemical, probably chlorine, in Syria this month, in the opposition-dominated village of Kafr Zita,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

“We are examining allegations that the government was responsible.”

The revelation follows Sunday’s announcement by French President Francois Hollande that his country had “information” but no proof that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime was still using chemical weapons.

You know who else spread propaganda about Russian expansionism? Nazis!

Hidden History: What Nazi-Tied Roots to U.S. International Media Reveals About Ukraine Crisis

Cross-Posted from occupy.com

A new Cold War has arisen between Russia and the U.S. over the future of Ukraine. With that has come accompanying discussions about the nature of portions of the U.S.-backed Neo-Nazi and anti-semitic opposition in the embattled former Soviet Republic.

Lost in the discussion so far — even as a “media war” burgeons between the superpower states — is a crucial piece of history lending context to the ongoing geopolitical stand-off that centers around anti-Semitism and the original Nazis themselves. Enter the U.S.-funded state-run international media outlets Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

While Russia Today (better known to many as “RT”) has found itself at the center of a firestorm of U.S. media coverage and scrutiny, VOA and RFE/RL have gotten off essentially scot-free so far - even though they received over $206 million and $93 million in taxpayer money, respectively, from the U.S. government in 2012.

SC GOP candidate urges Christians to remove children from godless ‘Pharaoh’s schools’

A Republican candidate for South Carolina lieutenant governor says Christians should remove their children from public schools.
“It’s our hope and prayer that a fresh obedience by Christian families and educating their children according to biblical commands will prove to be a key for the revival of our families, our churches, and our nation,” said Ray Moore, a retired Army Reserves chaplain and president of Frontline Ministries.
Moore told a gathering of Tea Party activists at the April 12 Liberty Rally that Christians must leave the “Pharaoh’s school system” for religious schools or home schools.
“We cannot win this war we’re in as long as we keep handing our children over to the enemy to educate,” he told the crowd.

Speaking of climate change:

Pronounced zonal heterogeneity in Eocene southern high-latitude sea surface temperatures

Significance

Reconstructions of ancient high-latitude climates can help to constrain the amplification of global warming in polar environments. Climate models cannot reproduce the elevated high-latitude temperature estimates in the Eocene epoch, possibly indicating problems in simulating polar climate change. Widely divergent near-Antarctic Eocene sea surface temperature (SST) estimates, however, question the evidence for extreme warmth. Our analysis of multiple temperature proxies near the Antarctic Peninsula improves intersite comparisons and indicates a substantial zonal SST gradient between the southwest Pacific and South Atlantic. Simulations of Eocene ocean temperatures imply that the formation of deep water in the southwest Pacific partly accounts for this SST gradient, suggesting that climate models underestimate Eocene SSTs in regions where the thermohaline circulation leads to relatively high temperatures.

Abstract
Paleoclimate studies suggest that increased global warmth during the Eocene epoch was greatly amplified at high latitudes, a state that climate models cannot fully reproduce. However, proxy estimates of Eocene near-Antarctic sea surface temperatures (SSTs) have produced widely divergent results at similar latitudes, with SSTs above 20 °C in the southwest Pacific contrasting with SSTs between 5 and 15 °C in the South Atlantic. Validation of this zonal temperature difference has been impeded by uncertainties inherent to the individual paleotemperature proxies applied at these sites. Here, we present multiproxy data from Seymour Island, near the Antarctic Peninsula, that provides well-constrained evidence for annual SSTs of 10-17 °C (1σ SD) during the middle and late Eocene. Comparison of the same paleotemperature proxy at Seymour Island and at the East Tasman Plateau indicate the presence of a large and consistent middle-to-late Eocene SST gradient of 𢏇 °C between these two sites located at similar paleolatitudes. Intermediate-complexity climate model simulations suggest that enhanced oceanic heat transport in the South Pacific, driven by deep-water formation in the Ross Sea, was largely responsible for the observed SST gradient. These results indicate that very warm SSTs, in excess of 18 °C, did not extend uniformly across the Eocene southern high latitudes, and suggest that thermohaline circulation may partially control the distribution of high-latitude ocean temperatures in greenhouse climates. The pronounced zonal SST heterogeneity evident in the Eocene cautions against inferring past meridional temperature gradients using spatially limited data within given latitudinal bands.

Or, as the PR states:

Parts of ancient Antarctica were as warm as today’s California coast, and polar regions of the southern Pacific Ocean registered 21st-century Florida heat, according to scientists using a new way to measure past temperatures.

[…]

By measuring concentrations of rare isotopes in ancient fossil shells, the scientists found that temperatures in parts of Antarctica reached as high as 17 degrees Celsius (63F) during the Eocene, with an average of 14 degrees Celsius (57F) — similar to the average annual temperature off the coast of California today.

Eocene temperatures in parts of the southern Pacific Ocean measured 22 degrees Centigrade (or about 72F), researchers said — similar to seawater temperatures near Florida today.

Today the average annual South Pacific sea temperature near Antarctica is about 0 degrees Celsius.

These ancient ocean temperatures were not uniformly distributed throughout the Antarctic ocean regions — they were higher on the South Pacific side of Antarctica — and researchers say this finding suggests that ocean currents led to a temperature difference.

[…]

Most people don’t really comprehend just how warm it is going to get if we burn all the fossil fuels we’ve discovered.

It’s run by E. I might highly recommend the paralegal route at this point. There is something of a glut of folks coming through law school at the moment, and a lot of discussion on the academic side about whether that is a good thing or a bad thing. Paralegal requires less education (and therefore less debt) but still provides an essential service. Plus if you decide that down the road that law school is the route you want to take, it gives you some experience that would play well.

Well, the polar regions are now known to be more sensitive to global climate change than the lower latitudes.

Point is - there will be no permanent ice caps if we burn all the fossil fuel we have discovered.

Yah, that’s why the polar vortex is swinging so far south and staying so long.

We’ll have a lot more to worry about than polar caps if we burn everything.

At least FO3 had an excuse that there was no real system of law around and thus summary execution for most crimes was warranted. But when you’re in the central city of Skyrim, decapitation for accidentally picking up an owned item seems a bit severe.

I tried. I really tried. But after the 5th time she died on me because she shifted directly into the path of a double-cast fireball, I had to send her home. After that point, I only called her out to fight dragons because she’d hold aggro for just long enough to die uselessly while I was setting up a big spell combo.

Reading the questions asked in the survey, and similar to the questions in the OK student/school survey on science, I’m convinced that these surveys are not assessing the ability of the subjects to understand science.

Rather, what is being assessed is how well the public can be convinced of accepting certain key phrases or well advertised assertions.

Sounds like a Western New York accent. When I met my wife she pronounced ‘Ham’ as if it had two syllables - “Hay-um”

it’s a russian accent - most european accents don’t have the ‘ih’ vowel, only ‘ee’, for ‘i’, and they don’t have the ‘aahh’ sound as in ‘bad’ for ‘a’, only the ‘ah’ sound as in “open your mouth and say ‘ah’”

on the other hand, russian has a weird vowel spelled ы, a kind of an umlaut ‘i’. sounds like you wanted to say ‘ee’ but got peanut butter stuck on your uvula

Right near “over there”

Left coast. The SF Peninsula, specifically, but I imagine it’s common elsewhere in Murrika.

Big purple eggplant = Eggplant.

Long skinny eggplant = Asian eggplant (or Oriental if you’re in the more backward parts).

Smaller, white, egg-shaped eggplant = Italian Eggplant.

I want a melanzane pizza and an aubergine XKE.

Dang it! Now I want that too. I’m imagining it having strips of roasted eggplant on top.

Vowels are funny. It took me a long time to grasp that my Scottish friend had a single sound for ‘oo’, whether it was ‘good’ or ‘food’, and it’s right in between the two.

But they could be. You just gotta find the right eggplant.

I’d also note that one way the Brits make fun of Murrican is the short ‘a’ sound. Think of Hugh Laurie singing ‘Kicking Ass’.
