Tuesday Night Acoustic: Antoine Dufour in Berlin, Full Set

From the 2012 “Guitar Masters Tour”

Here is my full set at the Astra in Berlin, Germany on November 15th 2012. Part of The Guitar Masters Tour, November 2012.

Since I’ve got loads of questions on my live set-up, here it is:

I go out of my guitar (K&K trinity mini) stereo. Send the pure pick-up into my Tonebone pz-pre preamp (made by Radial). The mic goes in the K&K blender for giving it the batterry power. Then the outputs of those goes into a small sound card (I use a Native instruments Komplete Audio 6), into my laptop with Mainstage (I used Logic pro as well before) . I did some eqs on both signal in the studio to get rid of some crap. I put some preamp simulators and a good lexicon verb plugin. Then, on the master out, I put some more eqs that I use to make a room eq with my guitar for each concert and room I’m playing in. I go over all the frets during sound check for notching more or less some frequency bumps. When I feel everything is pretty much even and flat, I let the PA guy do the rest.

Agreed, the movements really aren’t even similar enough to draw much of an analogy from but I was asked about the comparison this morning. Interesting that O’rielly doesn’t seem like much of a Bundy fan and says all the Fox news legal experts agree what Bundy’s doing is illegal. I was under the impression that Fox was shilling for the militias.

Beautiful set of acoustic guitar.

I love the music aspect of LGF, really acts as a nice balance to the bad craziness and endless barrage of stories of humans being dipshits (though the stories are necessary so we are ever vigilant against teh stupid).

Nope, Fox shills for the establishment GOP. They’re a bit more wary now of the TP monster they helped create.

And this Bundy affair has “Constitutional Patriot Second American Revolution” tea party trash written all over it. While Rand Paul and Ted Cruz and most Texas state pols are masturbating over Bundy, the remaining “moderates” in the party probably don’t want anything to do with it. I doubt if Jeb Bush or what’s left of Chris Christie looks favorably on Bundy and his wild west band of outlaws.

Ski Rant!

So, on Sunday, the last day the lifts spun, at 3 p.m. local time, my indestructible telemark binding proved destructible.

instagram.com

The binding lasted well in excess of 500 days of skiing, maybe even 600. Basically I’ve tele-skied on these bad boys since Dec. 2007 and they didn’t break. Well, a critical lug nut in the system just finally snapped off in the middle of a turn, something I said to myself upon inspection of the binding last November was an inevitability if I didn’t fix it.

Fortunately, it’s the end of the ski season, I can possibly get this fixed if I find the part, or I can just spring for the brand new Bishop 2.0 bindings which just went back into production this last winter.

For all you incredibly serious telemark skiing lizards, this binding is the shizzle.

LOL!

…Hudes says that she was fired by the World Bank after her 21 years of work there because she spoke out about issues related to “massive, massive, massive corruption” which the World Bank wants kept quiet. Just how massive is this corruption? Hudes says that the US gold reserves have been stolen by the Jesuits under the direction of a person she calls “the Black Pope” and that the US gold now resides in the Vatican. Oh, and she says that the “Black Pope” is not a human, but is of what she calls “a second species”. As she recently explained on a podcast:

“There’s a second species on this planet. They’re not extraterrestrials. They’re very much with us. They made maps in the previous ice age. The remnants of their civilizations are all over the place - a lot of times along the coast. It’s submerged because the sea level has gone up by 400 meters. This group has large brains. They’re very distinct from homo sapiens. Their DNA is so different, that if the two species mated, their offspring would be infertile, and we know this because their DNA was just tested. They have skulls all over the place because they have been on earth with us. But after the ice age, there weren’t that many of them, so they’ve been hiding, and one of the places that’s they’ve been hiding is in the Vatican. That’s why the Vatican are wearing those miters. It turns out that that’s what the high priest wore in the early beginnings of Judaism. Moses was actually Akhenaten, who was a pharaoh. They know this because the papyra that was taken from one of the pyramids talks about this. The people who are doing archeology in Israel know this. And the reason is, not only is homo capensis (?) trying to keep human beings under control by divide and conquer using our money system, they’ve also been doing this with our religions - organized religions - trying to get human beings to hate people of different religious faiths so that they will kill each other off, so that the people who are manipulating human beings could … use us like cattle. That’s what’s been going on through our history.”

Hudes goes on in the interview to explain that she learned of the existence of this world-controlling, large-brained, non-human species from “a retired neurologist named Edward Spencer,” and that his views were confirmed to her by an unnamed email correspondent in Portugal who, she says, attended a meeting of large-headed hominids with inhuman blue eyes. Hudes also claims to be part of a network of whistleblowers from various financial institutions who have taken their concerns to the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions. Hudes and Spencer have also sent emails about this conspiracy to a long list of US military and government officials. (Another Hudes podcast interview on this subject is available here. More details about Hudes’ and Spencers’ beliefs are available here.)

open tuning generally is whenever you tune the guitar to a regular chord or some other set of notes that sounds nice when you strum the instrument without putting any fingers down. it changes up the kind of chords you can get and makes some kinds of styles easier to play

slide blues players often tune to an open e major chord, and also some singer songwriter tunes such as ‘chelsea morning’ are usually played using that kind of tuning. i think it’s

E B E G# B E

iirc

also, see ‘hawaiian slack key’…

re: #77 Political Atheist

How is it different from the other kind of tuning?

It’s different in that you can tune the strings in such a way that when you strum all six string without fretting them (an “open” chord) you hear a specific chord. I think Antoine was playing in Open C Sharp in the second tune in the video. So when he plays an open chord, it’s a C Sharp.

I dunno, Charles knows waaaay more about guitar than I do, I feel a little weird commenting on it. *chortle*

Normal guitar tuning requires you to perform some magic with your fingers on the frets to make a nice sound. Open tuning allows you to change chords just by sliding a bar, bottle neck or your finger up and down the neck. Of course, you can still finger the fret board with open tuning, too, but the fretting is different from what you’d use with standard tuning.

Open tuning allows you to change chords just by sliding a bar, bottle neck or your finger up and down the neck. Of course, you can still finger the fret board with open tuning, too, but the fretting is different from what you’d use with standard tuning.

I’ve owned an acoustic guitar since I was 24, and can’t play any better than when I was 25. My problem is the lack of self-discipline to practice the bloody thing every day. Too many other things to keep me busy.

My son picked up my guitar when he was like 10, and played with his uncle and cousins. He can seriously jam now, acoustic or electric.

Rain maybe. So they can safely deploy tear gas en masse without risking a wildfire. Anyway that’s what I’d do, get a couple hundred agents with night vision gear and just roll down on them hard at around 3 AM, blanket the area with tear gas and smoke then drag all their asses to jail.

This is likely to end in a massive RICO indictment, with several Oathkeepers chapters and various militias being destroyed. When they detained those BLM agents at the hotel against their will they committed kidnapping according to federal law. Add in the flagrant and ongoing obstruction of justice and there’s just no way that can be allowed to go unanswered.

re: #77 Political Atheist

How is it different from the other kind of tuning? I’m so uneducated in music.

As pointed out, E A D G B E is standard tuning, and you have to contort your hand to make chords, but the relationship between the strings is: 4th, 4th, 4th, Maj 3rd, 4th. This means that scale patterns are compact, and 4-5 frets wide for diatonic (western) scales. That makes running up and down a scale in order convenient. So it can be good for lead guitar (but open tunings can be used for lead as well).

I like to use hybrid tunings where the upper strings form a chord and the lower strings are either in standard tuning or all offset by the same interval. Drop D (D A D G B E) is a fun one for rock and metal. I’ve also been playing with D G D G B E a lot lately, which I don’t think has a name.

It’s hard to prove racism as a motivation in political opposition but the extremes the RWNJs seem willing to go to and the fictions they’re willing to believe, especially when it undermines core beliefs they held in 2008, leaves me with little else to fig leaf their sour, hoary and vile bigotry for them.
I think that makes me the racist now.

Done with CNN. love my editor at cnn.com , but I’m done. Network works to scare viewers & hype nonsense & ignore news for hits

We still labor under the illusion that we are the consumers and that the news/programming is the product.

Commercial broadcasters sell advertising, their customers are advertisers. Programming is just window dressing to attract more viewers, raising the market value of their product.

Tnuva may be the most common milk companies in the country, but I dislike the taste compared to Yotvata (another popular brand). 251 lawhawk  Apr 23, 2014 6:26:37am

One of the coolest things I’ve seen was the night sky out in Bryce a few years back. It’s got one of the darkest night skies in the country, since it’s far from the light pollution of major cities and towns. There was a ranger-led night sky program, and if you ever have the opportunity to do one of these, jump at the chance.

They had put out a bunch of telescopes of different types, and they pointed out different constellations, galaxies, and also indicated when different satellites would go overhead.

One of the highlights was pointing out the ISS. That was most cool - watching it speed across the sky with the Milky Way rising behind it.

The best I could do is the photos out at Arches earlier this year. Don’t get to play enough with the technique back in New Jersey since the sky is considerably brighter with all the light pollution here.

I marvel at those who take astrophotography to the next level, like the folks that Phil Plait highlights regularly.

We were at a campground at the Chiracauhas in SW Arizona on a moonless night, we could follow the median stripe on the middle of the road by starlight.

And the campground was abandoned at that time of year (late October), the local spotted skunks were hungry for lack of trash to pick through, and getting very pert, one of them walked right over my feet as I sat at the picnic table.

Skunk I saw in a campground in SE New Mexico came out of a prickly pear patch every night to hang out by a bulletin board next to the washroom. It went there to munch on all the moths that were flying around the bulletin board light.

The skunk pretty much ignored the campers going to and fro to the washroom, but it was interesting to watch someone come out of the washroom nonchalantly and then suddenly jump when their cerebral cortex yelled “skunk!”

Well, the same yahoos who gummed up my twitter yesterday are back at it claiming that the Constitution prohibits the feds and BLM from owning land. Except that if that was the case, then all the courts since the 1845 decision that they argue proves their point would invalidate the BLM and all the land use/ownership cases thereafter.

Except…. they haven’t. They don’t quite seem to get that the law doesn’t support their claims, which are just that - a claim unsupported by the Constitution or the courts or federal or state law since. Nevada isn’t seeking ownership of the land, since they gave it to the feds as a condition of entering the Union during the Civil War. It’s a rather unique situation in American history, and trying to explain this in 140 characters is, well, vexing. Hard concepts don’t translate to soundbites, which is why the Bundy nuts seem to have the support of those who don’t understand the law, or the history behind the development of the West.

268 lawhawk  Apr 23, 2014 7:00:10am

Looks like Israel might have someone to negotiate with after all. Maybe.

Hamas and Fatah seem to have settled their long running disputes over who speaks for the Palestinians. They’ll be holding elections this fall, and Abbas will operate a caretaker government until then.

At that point, it might be worth talking about a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, but until then, it’s a holding pattern. Hamas, if they win the election, may well continue to hold to their no recognition of Israel, which would effectively kill the process such as it is.

If Fatah wins, Hamas could well do what they did after the last election and refuse to cede control, and the resulting civil war split control between Gaza and the West Bank. Might be interesting to see if Fatah gains ground in the election in Gaza (a sign of possible moderation of views), or if Hamas gains in the West Bank (sign of radicalization).

In any event, Israel knows that the current situation doesn’t help them economically and reducing the military costs would free up funds for use elsewhere in the country.

A peace deal can’t be forced on the parties, so a deal can only come when both sides are ready for it. Israel’s at that point, even though there’s a realization that land for peace alone will not secure peace - the Gaza disengagement is a vivid reminder that withdrawing from territory is no panacea for peace. It takes a leadership to draw away from incitement and violence, and the Palestinian leadership has to make that a priority. Fatah has done this to some extent, but Hamas uses violence, including by splinter groups and rivals in Gaza to solidify power and as a threat against Israel since 2007.

Cliven: v. To engage in an act of pointless self-victimisation whilst threatening violence in trying to prevent a court order being carried out with the expressed goal of making federal law recognise and enshrine one’s petty entitlement complex.

Some 4 decades ago a friend had his handlens (little teeny magnifying glass) put in baggage rather than carry on because you might be able to start a fire with it. This was when you could still smoke on planes and bring on lighters and matches.

People can develop amazing tunnel vision.

It’s easier than thinking.

re: #270 wheat-doggha — oo bird outside my window

They claim that Art 1, Sec. 8, Cl 17 governs, even though that’s for the District of Columbia alone. Context matters, except to them. They then point to Pollard’s Lessee, which is a pre-Civil War case stemming from land use issues in Alabama, which never had any federal land ownership.

Heck, even Heritage understands that this relates to the District of Columbia, and the formation of a seat of government, and that it doesn’t apply to situations like out West.

That distinguishes itself from the Nevada case, where the land was federally held before the Civil War, and a condition of statehood (and enshrined in the NV constitution) that lands would stay in federal control.

It also ignores Art 4, Sec. 3, Cl 2, which gives Congress the power to control lands and make laws concerning new states:

The Congress shall have power to dispose of and make all needful rules and regulations respecting the territory or other property belonging to the United States; and nothing in this Constitution shall be so construed as to prejudice any claims of the United States, or of any particular state.

In other words, this provision of the US Constitution is the authority under which the federal government can own lands, especially out West, which was largely granted statehood after the Civil War, often with land grant conditions written into the state constitutions.

If these states want to revisit this provision, and shift ownership back to the states, they’re welcome to try, but the law is sound on federal ownership of the land.

The Bundy’s certainly wouldn’t allow Spaniards, first Europeans to claim the land in which Nevada now sits.

And the Bundy’s would never dare to accept Mexican’s living on their land, even though Mexico could claim it as part of their land upon freedom from Spain.

Bashar al-Assad’s Deadly Loophole in Syria Deal

Earlier this month, the Assad regime allegedly used chlorine gas — a weapon Syria is not required to relinquish — against civilians in the town of Kafr Zita, causing victims to suffocate, choke, vomit, foam at the mouth and develop hypertension, according to a letter from the head of the Syrian Coalition, a Western-approved opposition group, to the United Nations Security Council.

In the letter, Syrian Coalition representative Najib Ghadbian urged investigators from the joint mission between the U.N. and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to inspect a research center in Damascus that allegedly produces Syria’s chlorine gas.

But so far, said Oubai Shahbandar, spokesman for the Syrian Coalition, the Security Council hasn’t discussed inspecting production sites or punishing for the regime for its alleged use of chlorine weapons.

Any Security Council decision would also have to get the approval of Russia, a permanent member and ally of Syria. Because that’s unlikely to happen, Shahbandar said, the onus falls on the United States to hold the regime accountable.

“Assad continues to press his luck because he believes he can get away with it,” Shahbandar said. “It is now time that he does not.”

Terror trial witness: Farm turned into jihad training camp

The wife of the owner of an alleged jihad training camp in Oregon testified at the trial of radical British Imam Abu Hamza al-Masri on Tuesday that she hoped to teach Muslims about canning and raising lambs, but ended up instead hosting a cadre of armed militants.

Eva Hatley said that in addition to practicing knife-throwing, shooting rifles at a deer target and discussing plans to kidnap truckers, visitors sent by Abu Hamza to her Bly ranch boasted of terror skills and one claimed to be a “hit man” for Osama bin Laden.

“It wasn’t anything like I had envisioned for the property,” said Hatley, who spent time in the federal witness protection program.

335 Killgore Trout  Apr 23, 2014 8:46:14am
Hatley said she grew up in Idaho, “bagged” her first deer at 12, converted to Islam at age 38, and married the owner of the Bly ranch after a brief courtship based on his promise to convert and her hopes of using the 160-acre ranch as a “teaching farm” for Muslims.

After moving there, however, she learned that her mostly absent husband — whom she had married over the telephone — had four previous wives and 18 children, and came to believe that he had suffocated his previous wife to death and planned to kill her, she said.

Yikes!

Yeah, They specifically only disallow weapons in government buildings that have security checkpoints. Which was pretty explicitly targeted at allowing guns into government facilities that the smallfolk use while keeping them out of the state house.

And yeah. We may not have (as many) open KKK-style groups in this country anymore, but racism is far from over. In Georgiastan, it’s more of the “subtle and assumed” style. You, as a “fine upstanding citizen”, don’t go to those places because you might run into those people.

Back in college, living around midtown Atlanta, I ordered a pizza once. The delivery guy was substantially late, and basically pleaded with me to get a tip anyway. As a pretty laid-back guy, I told him that I understood how it could be around that time of day on a college campus and that I had no problem still tipping him. He then informed me that he was glad, as a lot of people wouldn’t tip him under such circumstances. He then glanced around a bit, leaned in, and lowered his voice. “Honestly, it’s because they’re blah.”

The money had already changed hands, or I’d have had a change of heart about the tip.

re: #191 3eff Jeff

There are so many variations! I think your D G D G B E would be an open G6. True open G is that configuration with the high E dropped to D (the “classic” slack-key tuning). I finally figured out, while watching Jorma Kaukonen recently, that Hot Tuna’s “Water Song” is played in open G…. I believe Keith Richards uses the standard open G with the guitar strung with 5 strings. Dropped-D is great (watch Chris Cornell play sometime, and Collective Soul’s “Shine” is a recognizable example), also highly useful in acoustic folk-type settings (Stills’ “4+20”). Neil Young is a frequent user of double dropped-D — “Cinnamon Girl” and “Cortez the Killer” come to mind. THAT tuning is just pure fun to play with.

Then there’s my personal fave, D A D G A D. It’s neither major nor minor — is an open suspended 2. Great for Irish tunes, and gives a delightful mid-eastern sort of tonal color (see: Davy Graham, John Renbourn, Richard Thompson).

GOPTeabag: Always Be Rebranding:

Although the troubles have intensified this semester, they began when the college (The College of Charleston) announced “Fun Home,” a memoir with themes that include sexual orientation, as the selection for a voluntary book experience last fall. For $52,000, the college bought thousands of copies of the book to distribute and arranged for its author, Alison Bechdel, to speak here.

But the selection angered religious conservatives. The Palmetto Family Council condemned the work as “pornographic,” a characterization its author disputes, and a state legislator, Garry R. Smith, ultimately led an effort to cut the college’s state budget allocation by $52,000. (Mr. Smith also targeted the University of South Carolina Upstate for a smaller reduction because of a different book selection.)

People just don’t understand that yes, they were supposed to be paying sales taxes on all those online purchases all along. Just that if the seller doesn’t automatically collect them, you have to report and pay directly to the state. Non-existent enforcement has caused them to believe that it was perfectly legit to be ducking sales tax for decades.

Not that it matters in my case. Even with the sales tax back in, Amazon’s selection and convenience (“free” shipping via prime which just works out to be very, very cheap shipping) trumps 99% of brick-and-mortar retail for me. The only reason I ever use anything else to buy things is for food, or some other thing that I want/need to have “today”.

What makes it really bad is Horowitz ignores that his own side has been embracing neo-fascist movements in Europe. Blaming Obama who is about as far of being Anti-Semitic as you can get for Anti-Semitism is just disgusting. Then again Horowitz’s whole schitick is Mr. Disillusioned Lefty. He in his day was more left wing than Obama ever will be but Dave thinks just because he got disillusioned that everyone to the left of him is an Anti-Semite. He’s a disgusting pos.
