Pamela Geller: Hate Crimes Reporting Bill is “Creeping Sharia”

Brian Tashman at Right Wing Watch reports:

Conservative activists are livid about a new bill to update a 1993 National Telecommunications and Information Administration report “on the current prevalence of hate crimes and hate speech in telecommunications,” which anti-Muslim activist Pamela Geller said “is Sharia.”

While speaking to Janet Mefferd yesterday, Geller alleged that the bill will “silence” any “criticism of the left and of the Islamic machine,” while Mefferd called the legislation “creeping Sharia like crazy.”

The 1993 report [PDF] unmistakably denounced the very hate speech measures that Geller suggests are included in the bill: “NTIA endorses the belief, expressed by virtually every commenter, that the best remedy to hate speech is not government restrictions, but more speech, to disseminate views that challenge notions of hate and bigotry.”

Geller then cited the disputed claim that Matthew Shepard’s murder was not motivated by anti-gay animus to argue that the bill is like a “steaming pile of dung [packaged] in a Tiffany box with a little white ribbon.”

Not that much of a digression, I’m trying to track down the details of the big Texas battle’s key court decision. The BLM took a bit over 100 acres of land from a rancher named Henderson, who has land next to the Red River.

Now as I’m reading the things he’s said the first thing I notice is he keeps making contradictory claims. He paid for the land, but it was legitimately homesteaded land, but … oh dear dog it gets even worse.

So what I’d like to do is find the actual court case was and see what the actual facts on the ground were. You know, like why this case was in Oklahoma already and the state judge gave it to the federal to resolve. (Which probably has all the other law watchers and legal eagles going “huh?”, just like me.)

Henderson, in Texas, vs the United States. He claims to have lost it in 1984.

Here is an article about Henderson and the boundary between TX and OK where his land is. There is mention of the case at the end. Evidently he bought some acreage which was later determined to be actually property of the federal government, but still owed on the mortgage he took out to buy it. Sounds like a bad deal for him-and perhaps he should have gone after (legally, that is) whomever sold it to him. Perhaps the original owner homesteaded it and then sold it in good faith?

Yeah, I can’t find the court case either, but it seems that everyone on the internet is taking their information from the same source as the verbiage is nearly identical. I haven’t seen any actual interviews with Henderson except where he explains the what is happening with state lines, property lines and how river movement affects them.
I think it is interesting that Henderson is (or was-I didn’t check the date) on the commission working on an agreed upon border at the Red River.

Anyway, it is an interesting question, but I have to go take care of some stuff now.

So, over the last week or two, my kids have sucked me into watching Adventure Time.

At first, I thought it was just another silly kid’s cartoon, with Finn and his dog on imaginary adventures, then as my watching it, it starts to have real depth.

The whole story is supposed to be 1000 years after a nuclear war had wiped out civilization and the various monsters are all mutants from after the war. The Ice King, who was the villain in the early episodes, turns out to have been a archaeologist who found the Ice Crown which allowed him to survive the war, but drove him insane. He ended up loosing all memory of who he was trying to save a girl named Marceline, who became the Vampire Queen, the one person who remembers who he used to be.

I found the storyline very engaging and moving, more that I thought a cartoon ever could be.

Here is an article about Henderson and the boundary between TX and OK where his land is. There is mention of the case at the end. Evidently he bought some acreage which was later determined to be actually property of the federal government, but still owed on the mortgage he took out to buy it. Sounds like a bad deal for him-and perhaps he should have gone after (legally, that is) whomever sold it to him. Perhaps the original owner homesteaded it and then sold it in good faith?

What’s the liberal equivalent of climate denial?

Here’s the catch: studies show self-identified liberals and conservatives have roughly the same tendency to twist the data to fit their biases. Dan Kahan — whose work kicked off this conversation — has studied this six ways from Sunday. His conclusion is that liberals and conservatives are fundamentally alike: they reason backwards from their conclusion, and woe unto any evidence caught in their way.

In one experiment, Kahan showed you could get liberals to start doubting global warming (and conservatives to begin accepting it) by making clear that any solution would require geoengineering. In another, he showed that both liberals and conservatives were more likely to rate someone an expert on climate change if they agreed with their conclusions. In a third, he showed liberals were about as resistant to evidence showing concealed carry laws are safe as conservatives were to evidence showing climate change is dangerous.

I don’t think the GOP base will decrease its batshit crazy intensity at all if Clinton is the nominee. At this point any (D) candidate starts out to the GOP base as the baby-murdering spawn of Hitler and Stalin simultaneously.

That’s the baseline.

Hillary being a woman and a Clinton is quite enough to get the RWNJs to the same level of above-baseline excess as we see with Obama, although it will take different forms than we’ve seen with Obama.

In my opinion, the GOP will need to lose 40+ states in a presidential election to have a chance at recovering its sanity, and I don’t see that happening any time soon.

The story of Simon and Marceline (I will always think of Adventure Time and Cheers when I hear that song), the not quite niceness of Princess Bubblegum, and the history of the world have kept my kids and me hooked. So, over the last week or two, my kids have sucked me into watching Adventure Time.

At first, I thought it was just another silly kid’s cartoon, with Finn and his dog on imaginary adventures, then as my watching it, it starts to have real depth.

The whole story is supposed to be 1000 years after a nuclear war had wiped out civilization and the various monsters are all mutants from after the war. The Ice King, who was the villain in the early episodes, turns out to have been a archaeologist who found the Ice Crown which allowed him to survive the war, but drove him insane. He ended up loosing all memory of who he was trying to save a girl named Marceline, who became the Vampire Queen, the one person who remembers who he used to be.

I found the storyline very engaging and moving, more that I thought a cartoon ever could be.

I’m addicted to Adventure Time. There’s something about that show, it just keeps evolving, getting better and better. It’s pretty damned unique, impossible to pigeonhole, and the only cartoon I currently watch at all.

Paul was speaking Tuesday with former senior Obama adviser David Axelrod at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics. He said evidence of man-made climate change being a problem remains inconclusive and that many activists are “alarmist.”

“They all predicted the poor Statue of Liberty was going to drown within a hundred years, and the polar bears and all this stuff,” Paul said. “That alarmist stuff, I think, really detracts from the case that we shouldn’t pollute.”

Axelrod then asked Paul about the New York City subway system moving to insulate its system after superstorm Sandy.

“What I would say is that someone is an ignoramus who would say that, ‘Oh, we had three hurricanes this year. This proves that somehow the climate is warming,’” Paul said. “The earth’s 4.5 billion years old, and you’re going to say that we had four hurricanes and so it proves a theory?”
