Cliven Bundy: “I Want to Tell You About the Negro”

What right wing racism?

As if the Bundy Ranch right wing cause célèbre weren’t already stupid and hateful enough:

He said he would continue holding a daily news conference; on Saturday, it drew one reporter and one photographer, so Mr. Bundy used the time to officiate at what was in effect a town meeting with supporters, discussing, in a long, loping discourse, the prevalence of abortion, the abuses of welfare and his views on race.

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

I’m sure Sean Hannity will without hesitation feature his buddy Cliven’s view on race on his show.

You know the drill of course. “That’s not racist and you’re the real racist” in 3, 2, 1…

Who didn’t see this coming. But keep on lying to yourselves about the racism that exists on your side conservatives and blame it on the left because I’m sure that’s much more easier than admitting that you’re sympathizing with a bigoted asshole.

“They don’t have the guts enough to try to start that again for a few years,” Mr. Bundy said in an interview.
…….snip……..
One of Mr. Bundy’s sons, Ammon, 38, a car fleet manager from Phoenix, said his father had taught the federal government a lesson. “We ran them out of here,” he said, sitting in a trailer set up near one of the protesters’ camp sites. “We were serious. We weren’t playing around.”

A completely smackable family.

Yep, he is a living museum of old generation racism, of course he would never consider himself a racist..he knows what them “colored people” want because he is benevolent and so full of the Lord.

It will be interesting to see how many of these manufactured outrage radio and TV personalities start to disassociate from this oaf (and how many stand by him)

Clark County Recorder documents show the 160-acre Bunkerville ranch Bundy calls home was purchased by his parents, David and Bodel Bundy, from Raoul and Ruth Leavitt on Jan. 5, 1948.

Yeah LBJ the president who signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is worse than a man who thinks slavery may have been best for black people. With the desert sun high, about two dozen cowboys on horseback appeared in a cloud of dust on the hills above the protest area, ready to ride about three miles away to take Bundy’s cattle back. “Until the cows come home!” the crowd cheered. Meanwhile, antigovernment “Patriot” groups such as the Oath Keepers, grew only more excited. Wiley Drake, national chaplain for the Oath Keepers, said the time had come to no longer bow to President Obama, whom he called a “half-breed.” - SPLC Hatewatch

Bundy and his ilk have always been mostly-illiterate, anti-social, paranoid, gun hoarding, anti-government, fundamentalist, babyklukkers. This range war scenario just brought them out in the open.

And they’re still out there; wearing boots and cowboy hats, driving trucks and eating apple pie, getting their hands dirty working hard every day, and giving the superficial appearance of all-American core values respectability.

But they aren’t respectable. They’re shit fucking crazy. And unless you’re one of them, they hate you (City People) and everything ‘not them’ you stand for.

And this is something else the GOP has lost sight of: politics is about winning people over to your point of view, not just branding everyone who disagrees with you as a mongrel, loser, moocher, traitor, terrorist sympathizer, communist/socialist/fascist, etc…

I almost hope that the Bundy thing lingers into 2016 so they can make their presence felt at the GOP convention.

The momentum of the “Bundy thing” will only grow before the election. It isn’t really even all about Bundy, nor is Bundy necessary for their movement to continue. Essentially, Bundy gave this group a shot in the arm and made them visible. In one respect we should feel fortunate, because until Bundy the majority chose to isolate themselves. Now everyone can witness the simmering crockpot of crazy that’s been on the QT the whole time.

And the GOP will have to choose between distancing itself from them and alienating the base or (at least tacitly) accepting them and alienating everyone who is not bat-shit crazy and armed to the teeth.

And I would like to think that the latter group is still the majority in our country.

“Fusion” means different things in various arts, but one of the backwaters of pop music was the Japanese “lounge” music of decades past.

Back in the days of vinyl this material was sometimes presented with lurid album covers and even some of the tracks were laced with erotic content.

I kind of like the stuff - it’s one of my many guilty pleasures.

Some of the recordings do fuse genres - here is one cut in which the clave is sounding Latin, but the piano part is strange mix of East and West:

In a lot of ways, I get the feeling that the militia crowd are disappointed that the Bundy standoff didn’t result in any deaths or injuries that could be blamed on the Feds. They so badly wanted a martyr, wanted to be able to scream that the government had drawn “first blood” and that any actions taken were in defense of “patriots.” But instead what they’ve got now is a lot of people losing interest as well as the reality that the BLM will now just take less confrontational steps to enforce the law.

This is more evidence in my theory. If you aren’t 100% aware of what side of an issue to be on because you haven’t been following it, find out where right wing conservatives are on it.

Then take the other side

A good rule of thumb, but there are exceptions; like the Tea Party actually siding with solar power manufacturers

But instead what they’ve got now is a lot of people losing interest as well as the reality that the BLM will now just take less confrontational steps to enforce the law.

Because the BLM is run by responsible professionals and not frothing ideologues.

I see Hank Campbell, proprietor of the Science 2.0 website and Glenn Beck admirer, has another editorial up digging at Cosmos and Tyson.

Apparently Campbell is upset that Ussher was picked on, and asks why, because others, especially Kepler, were doing the same thing.

I was thinking of writing up a long answer, because there is good reason to center on Ussher, because (1) he was referenced extensively in Bibles published later, and (2) today creationists popularize Ussher, e.g., AIG publishing an English translation of Ussher’s major work.

However, I find it hard to defend Cosmos in general because I do think the producers/writers are doing a poor job on the history as well as being very science-lite.

It’s hard to defend something one doesn’t really appreciate, even if others’ attacks are even worse.

Bundy said he remembered driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, which he called a “government house” with “always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch” with nothing to do.

Sitting on the porch, eh? Haven’t heard that slur in a long time. A very long time, indeed.

If you simply support CB in his dispute with the BLM, then his comments about “the negro” are irrelevant, but lots of his fans go way beyond that, they have elevated him to “a true American patriot and hero”, which makes it a bit harder to distance themselves from his remarks.

In which case, they have no recourse but to double down on the rhetoric.

Yes, unfortunately; Bundy’s fans will claim he’s just being “politically incorrect” or some such twaddle.

Bundy knows his audience, and I’m pretty sure he knows damned well that a large segment of the yayhoos out there in Wingnuttia agree with him 100% on what he said. He gave voice to what they’re thinking, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they rallied around him yet again for that.

I don’t know how they intend to do that, as there’s no chance they’ll ever find the votes for it in Congress to override a presidential veto, the States cannot legally seize federal land, and the courts would never be able to rule that states can lay claim to federal land.

145 Lidane  Apr 24, 2014 4:53:32am

From that Weekly Standard article:

This is no victory for anyone other than Bundy and, The Scrapbook hopes, a temporary one at that. There is a term to describe the people who surround him, and it isn’t “militia.” The word is “mob.” And what this mob has practiced is not civil disobedience but armed provocation of a democratic government which has afforded Cliven Bundy every right and privilege as a citizen. One of Bundy’s supporters boasted to the press that “we were actually strategizing to put all the women up at the front.” This is the same spirit that animates people who attack firemen during riots, or opposed school integration with violence in Little Rock, Arkansas. In that case, 57 years ago, President Eisenhower was obliged to send the 101st Airborne because, as he said, “mob rule cannot be allowed to override the decisions of our courts.”

What was true then remains true today. Cliven Bundy is no hero of any kind. No conservative would pick and choose the laws he intends to obey, defy the rest, and challenge the rule of democracy with guns. No hero would adopt the terrorist’s tactic of placing innocents in harm’s way. Any fool can pick up a weapon and aim at an officer of the law; the moral power of civil disobedience lies in the willingness to defer to the law and accept punishment on principle.

Oh, and Dana also links to a video of her and Napolitano telling the faithful about how the BLM “overreached,” first by saying that a dispute involved federal land should have been hashed out in a state court, and then declaring that the BLM should have taken the victory it had won in court and sat on it until the land changed hands.

I don’t know if Nap has actually read the most recent court decision, but I have, and the ruling by the court was pretty clear: Bundy had 45 days to get his cattle off federal land, after which the BLM was empowered to seize and impound any trespassing cattle. That ruling came in August of last year, so the BLM actually gave Bundy well over 45 days to get his ass in gear. He continued to thumb his nose at them, so we got what we saw last week.

By spinning it as a dispute over “real estate” and saying that such matters are “traditionally” the purview of state courts. As though Bundy and another rancher were arguing over who was trespassing on whose land, rather than Bundy refusing to pay fees for the usage of federal protected lands for grazing his cattle.

A bit cool (40s) and clear outside in Philly Land. Looks like a few days of nice weather going through the weekend with highs in the 60s and dropping to the 40s at night. I like it since it’s not overcast, not too hot to require the A/C to be on, and just having a few open windows is enough.

Psychological warfare with one of the cats continues*. She entirely cleared the top of the bed room dresser off at 5am this morning of anything that weighed less than two pounds. That included two cardboard boxes that were bigger than she was.

Same cat goes to the vet today for shots. I think I will see if the vet has any suggestions towards dealing with the issues - if it’s any sort of indication of the cat having health issues, or possibly just being bored.

* - Arguably the cat is winning since so far I have changed behaviors more than the cat has.

Think that’s one of the reasons that Bundy’s case is such a sorry state of affairs, a rural white jackass begrudging others for taking advantage of welfare despite the subsidies he receives from the government for raising his cattle even before you factor in the ridiculously low grazing fees that other ranchers are paying that he refuses to. That he wears a Stetson instead of a ballcap and a button shirt instead of a stained wife-beater doesn’t make him any less of a poster child for conservative hypocrisy on welfare.

Yep. Learned that lesson about 30 years ago in some minor dispute with a fraternity brother. You’d beat him down on some point and he’d retreat to the next point. And after about 5-6 points he’d cycle back to the first one.

That’s the main reason I don’t engage seriously with these loons. They’re not interested in holding an honest debate/discussion where there is a chance that new information or being presented with a supported viewpoint different than their own will lead to further development or refinement of their position. They’re playing a different game, and in fact one I am not interested in playing at all.

With summer coming and the snow melted, it has sure taken its toll on gravel driveways. Many people are going to need gravel to fill the holes and level out the drive. I want to make some sweet cash by providing them with all the gravel they need. Think I’ll go on over to the federal lands and start up a gravel digging operation. That’s cool isn’t it?

I’m sorry, but what issues and what image destruction? You’ve seen the twits reposted in this thread, right? “So what if he’s a racist, that doesn’t excuse that the feds dared to try to do their jobs!”

Bundy and his cronies pointed loaded weapons at federal agents, and walked away scott free. If they were brown and wearing turbans, we wouldn’t be talking about a ranch or what his views are on race, we’d be getting a 24x7 screech about terrorists and the feds’ complete lack of doing anything about them.

They got off scott free. He still owes the money, you say? Who the hell cares, the feds have already demonstrated that they don’t really care all that much about collecting it. Otherwise they would have, you know, collected it already. Right around the same time that they teargassed him and threw him in the back of a paddywagon, along with all of the other domestic terrorists that were aligned with him.

But, eh, this is ‘Murca. We reserve the pepper spray for students that are sitting down on a sidewalk. Adults that are actively threatening federal agents with guns get to walk away completely unmolested.

The BLM backed down because there were too many innocents - women and children in the crowd, that they didn’t want to get into a firefight or armed conflict with these people. Defuse the situation and then go back in at a time and place of their choosing.

Thing is that liens are secured by armed law enforcement all the time. Sheriffs’ offices around the country use armed officers and officers of the court to repossess items to secure judgments for liens. Happens all the time. This isn’t some unusual situation vis a vis armed officers trying to take the herd of cattle as restitution for the judgment.

Bundy doesn’t recognize the federal government, or the judgments of the federal courts. That puts him at odds with most of the country, and law enforcement has every right and the authority to secure those judgments. Those that continue to back Bundy are supporting someone who is an extremist at heart and whose actions are criminal for stealing from the public - taxpayers.

The statement that slavery had benefits, as simple as it is, is an excellent way to summarize the mentality that supports the inequality that persists in our society to this day.

There is nothing to learn about picking cotton other than this: “Be a happy slave.”

There are people who may tell themselves that being exploited by the rich and powerful enables them to live the good “family life” and be “better off.”

But, the secret truth is that those who tell themselves this lie do so because they hope to one day join the rich and powerful, and they want to retain the conditions that will enable them to exploit the rest.

251 lawhawk  Apr 24, 2014 6:41:41am

And then you wonder why the national parks had to be closed during the GOP shutdown? You’ve got people who don’t think twice about stealing from the common good - the priceless national lands. Bundy’s just one symptom of that. They think they’re entitled to use the land as they see fit, because, shut up.

All the claims that what Bundy did with letting his herd on the federal land was somehow beneficial to the land doesn’t matter. He was trespassing with the herd. He didn’t pay the fees.

If you want to go to the top of the Empire State Building, you can’t do it without paying a fee to the landowner. You don’t have a right to go without the landowner’s permission. Same deal here. The feds own the land.

Bundy can dispute that all he likes, but he’s lost in court (which he doesn’t recognize as being legitimate, but his views on legitimacy don’t change the fact of the authority of the court or the BLM to manage the federal lands). Others have tried to make the same arguments and have likewise failed in federal court.

Conservatives who continue to support this nut have only themselves to blame when it blows up in their face. They’re backing an extremist whose on the fringe of the fringe right. That’s not a good place to be.

I’m still waiting to hear about a single right that the feds have violated vis a vis Bundy. And the reason for that is that there were no rights violated. If anything, the feds should have nipped this in the bud 20 years ago. They let this fester for as long as they did.

Well, generally speaking, they’re better off “on the dole” instead of working because the work available blows. Crap hours for sub-living-wage pay and few if any benefits. No rational actor would willingly decide to waste their time in such an endeavor — and that’s with or without “the dole” being there.

Our only hope is that millennial whites, and the growing Asian/Latino populations will make loons like Bundy into a minority no more worth listening to than 9/11 truthers.

Most Chinese would try to smuggle money OUT of China. Bringing US dollars into China in such a large quantity is against the law here, and suggests criminal activity to acquire such a sum. He’s in a boatload of trouble if the mainland cops have him.

If Bundy’s point was about public assistance*, then mentioning the race of the people sitting on the porch was not necessary. So the card being played was by Bundy, not the media.

* - And since the cheap grazing fees are essentially public assistance for ranchers Bundy has no ground to complain about that. That he is taking the assistance without paying for it is even more hypocritical, not to mention criminal.

Dear Mrs Prim,

If Mr Bundy and his supporters tried their bullshit in China, which truly does have state-run and state-controlled media, this is what would happen.

1. Bundy and anyone carrying a firearm would likely be shot on sight by the PLA, or the police.
2. Anyone surviving after a police or army raid would be thrown in prison, tried and convicted.
3. No one would hear about it. Reports in the media and the Internet would be scrubbed within hours by the state censors.
4. Bundy would not have been given the opportunity to vent his displeasure with the government in the first place. Resisting the government is a criminal act. See item 2 and 3, above. The death penalty is an option to item 2.

Thank you for your kind consideration of these matters. Now kindly shut up.

“Rule of Law”, when used by a Republican or a Libertarian, is code for “I don’t give a damn what the circumstances were, I still want to see that blah go to prison!”

“Rule of Law” is invoked when it looks like a blah person is going to get some clemency or leniency due to extenuating circumstances. It does not apply to white people doing whatever the hell they want. Prime example: Neil Boortz was a real big fan of the phrase “Rule of Law”, but regularly griped that he should be able to drive as fast as he wants to on the freeways and that the real criminals were those going too slow.

Yelling “racist” as an “argument” in the immigration debate
By The Mighty Greenwald

All in a single one-line post, Oliver Willis manages to perfectly illustrate the cheapest, most intellectually dishonest — and, for those who wield it in the immigration debate, the most self-destructive — form of argumentation.

Willis references a post by Kevin Drum at Washington Monthly, which quotes a letter from anti-illegal-immigration Congressman Tom Tancredo to his supporters in which Rep. Tancredo asks for help in what Tancredo calls the “struggle to preserve our national identity against the tide of illegal immigrants flooding the United States.” In response to Tancredo’s letter, Willis snidely writes:

Hey, Tom Tancredo … Just say “white power” and get it off your chest.

So, there’s Willis’ self-satisfied decree, in its vapid entirety. According to Willis (and many of Drum’s commentators, if not Drum himself), anyone who believes that it’s important for a nation to be comprised of citizens who have at least some joint national allegiance and a minimal common foundation — never mind a common language in which they can communicate with one another — is a White Supremacist bigot…

Just a drive by to point out that according to a study some years ago, privately let grazing rights and federal grazing rights are roughly economically equal. The reason the feds lease so cheaply is that they don’t make any improvements for water access, etc. The rancher pays for that. On privately owned land the owner is expected to provide those improvements.
In this case, Bundy apparently feels that the fact he had to pay for improvements to run his cattle like every other rancher leasing from the feds gives him some sort of ownership of the land in question.

re: #390 Targetpractice

First he writes:

“His legal case is problematic; the Bureau of Land Management certainly has jurisdiction over the federal lands on which his cattle graze.”

And later:

Bundy’s position on the federal government itself is unjustifiable. He stated in a recent interview: “I believe this is a sovereign state of Nevada. I abide by all of Nevada state laws. But I don’t recognize the United States government as even existing.” Obviously, the federal government does exist, and if the state of Nevada exists, it only does so because it was formed with the permission of the feds under the Constitution.

In fact, the Constitution of the of Nevada explicitly denies Bundy’s interpretation of the law: “no power exists in the people of this or any other State of the Federal Union to dissolve their connection therewith or perform any act tending to impair, subvert, or resist the Supreme Authority of the government of the United States.”

So Bundy’s wrong on the legal and constitutional merits of his anti-federal case. But he does represent a growing problem in the United States: the problem of a seemly omnipotent federal government running roughshod over local rights.

Goodbye, Net Neutrality; Hello, Net Discrimination

In 2007, at a public forum at Coe College, in Iowa, Presidential candidate Barack Obama was asked about net neutrality. Specifically, “Would you make it a priority in your first year of office to reinstate net neutrality as the law of the land? And would you pledge to only appoint F.C.C. commissioners that support open Internet principles like net neutrality?”

“The answer is yes,” Obama replied. “I am a strong supporter of net neutrality.” Explaining, he said, “What you’ve been seeing is some lobbying that says that the servers and the various portals through which you’re getting information over the Internet should be able to be gatekeepers and to charge different rates to different Web sites…. And that I think destroys one of the best things about the Internet—which is that there is this incredible equality there.”

If reports in the Wall Street Journal are correct, Obama’s chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Thomas Wheeler, has proposed a new rule that is an explicit and blatant violation of this promise. In fact, it permits and encourages exactly what Obama warned against: broadband carriers acting as gatekeepers and charging Web sites a payola payment to reach customers through a “fast lane.”

I was aware, but a lot of people are unaware of the sinister role that the Russian Orthodox Church has assumed in the restoration of the Russian Empire under Putin.

Sadly history has shown too many times churches (religions) have been behind a lot of political power moves either in direct support when it is beneficial and/or standing aside when it could make them look bad. And they help the politicians justify those moves by giving moral backing to go along with the laws that allow it. Then everything is seen as needed and right and out goes the military to pull it all off.

487 lawhawk  Apr 24, 2014 9:29:32am

Here’s where Bundy’s argument falls apart (not counting all the other parts):

He used to pay the grazing fee to the BLM. It was only after they changed the calculation of the fee that he’s suddenly opposed to the fee.

By paying the fee, he recognized the BLM and it’s authority over the land. It’s the same land in question.

CLIVEN BUNDY TIMELINE

1946

■ Cliven Bundy is born April 29, 1946, in Las Vegas.

■ The Bureau of Land Management is established by President Harry Truman on May 16, 1946. The BLM’s functions include replacing the U.S. Grazing Service that was formed in 1934.

1951

■ Bundy’s parents move their family into the newly constructed Bunkerville ranch house.

1954

■ Cliven’s father, David Ammon Bundy, begins grazing cattle with his 8-year-old son on the Bunkerville allotment near the farm he purchased in 1949. Cliven’s mother, Bodel Jensen Bundy, had homesteaded land near Mesquite. David and Bodel Bundy had moved their family from Mount Trumbull, Ariz., where David was born in 1922.

1973

■ Cliven Bundy pays grazing fees to the BLM for the next 20 years.

1993

■ The BLM modifies Bundy’s grazing permit by reducing the size allowed for his herd to 150 and restricts where his cattle can graze in the Gold Butte area. He refuses the permit and stops paying grazing fees. The BLM cancels his permit.

1994

■ The BLM issues an order requiring Bundy to remove his cattle.

1995

■ The BLM issues another order requiring Bundy to remove his cattle.

1996

■ Nevada Legislature and voters, seeking to take control of federal land in the state, repeal the so-called Disclaimer Clause of the state’s 1864 constitution that had declared people in the territory “disclaim all right and title to the unappropriated public lands.”

1998

■ U.S. District Court of Nevada issues an order to stop Bundy from grazing cattle on the Bunkerville allotment.

1999

■ The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholds the District Court’s permanent injunction.

2000

■ Cliven Bundy, whose grandparents, Abraham and Ella Bundy, settled in the Parashant area in 1877 near Mount Trumbull on the Arizona strip, voices concern for President Bill Clinton establishing Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument. He says it’s a land grab, telling the Review-Journal, “The terrible thing about it is there is private property, customs and lifestyles” at stake.

2008

■ The Interior Board of Land Appeals hears Bundy’s appeal of the BLM’s cancellation of his range improvement authorizations and affirms the BLM’s decision.

2011

■ The BLM sends a cease-and-desist order to Bundy and a notice of intent to gather his cattle.

2012

■ The BLM conducts aerial surveys of the Gold Butte area and prepares to round up 500 to 900 cattle but suspends the operation indefinitely in April 2012 out of safety concerns for people involved with the roundup.

2013

■ The U.S. District Court of Nevada in July orders Bundy to remove his cattle from public land within 45 days and says the U.S. can seize and impound any remaining cattle.

■ The court reaffirms in October that Bundy has no legal right to graze the federal land and, again, directs him to remove his cattle within 45 days, ordering Bundy not to interfere with an impoundment action.

2014

■ The BLM issued a Notice of Intent to Impound Unauthorized Livestock grazing on BLM and National Park Service lands on March 19.

■ The roundup begins April 5.

Next year’s keynote speaker:

489 kirkspencer  Apr 24, 2014 9:31:31am

So here’s the way I’ve taken to explaining the whole Bundy situation.

In 1848, Sam Usa got title to the land. in 1864, N E Vada got permission to claim what he’d use, but the agreement was that what he didn’t homestead would remain in Sam’s custody.

In 1948, almost a century later, Bundy’s parents bought a ranch of 160 acres. That’s not enough for decent economic payoff of cattle ranching so they had to use other land to supplement their grazing needs. At that time most of their neighbors charged rental fees, but Sam Usa let them use it for free. Because Sam owned a LOT of things and was a busy man, the direct management was under the wholly owned subsidiary BuLan Management.

Eventually the parents died and the ranch passed to Cliven Bundy.

In 1986 the CEO for the business Sam Usa owned, one Ronald Reagan, got the owner to start charging for use of the land. The rates were still lower than what the other neighbors were charging, but Sam said he’d not do any improvements so as to keep costs low. Cliven said that seemed like a fair deal and started paying the fee.

In 1993 Sam, who had other interests besides ranching, decided he was a bit concerned that the turtles he liked might need a little protection. So he asked the people using his land to cut back while he checked to see if there was a problem. Most of the ranchers agree but some got upset. One of those was Cliven, who outright refused to pay the fee or to cut back use. Yep, despite paying he continued to use Sam’s land.

In 1998 Sam said there was indeed a danger to those turtles so he was going to make the parts of the land where they lived unavailable for use by ranchers. Cliven said, “screw you” and kept right on using the land. Cliven also went to court to claim that since he was using the land he’d get to continue under various arguments like homesteading on his part and absentee landlord on Sam’s part, but he kept losing. But he kept using it without paying, despite repeated letters from Sam and his attorneys to stop.

Eventually Sam went to court about this, and the courts said Cliven was basically stealing. Rather than criminal action they agreed with Sam to keep it at the civil level and give Cliven some time to get his cows off Sam’s land. Anything left after that was assumed to be Sam’s property.

Sam gave Cliven months more than the courts required, but eventually he went to take the cattle that was now his. And Cliven and his friends met Sam with guns and threats.

If you’re Sam, what do you do next? Me, I think the arguments behind SYG and Molon Labe and all that mean doing right means stopping the thieves.

I’m happy to ignore the fact he’s a racist and focus on his dispute with the BLM, to wit:

He’s repeatedly stated that he’ll do whatever takes to protect his cattle. He then attracts a good number of heavily armed militia members to his ranch to impede the BLM from exercising their court sanctioned legal duties. The BLM takes them at their word and shows up heavily armed and in numbers. The BLM does this, presumably, in the hopes that they are dealing with rational actors who would avoid instigating a fire fight when outgunned and outnumbered. Of course, these “rational” actors also intended to have their women shot first to maximize the effect on behalf of their cause.

According to Sean Hannity, what the BLM should have done is come with the exact same number of people, on horseback, with similar weapons so as not to be “disproportionate”. You know—give these guys a fighting chance and increase the odds that a fight does, in fact, happen.

Switching gears a bit—from lawhawk’s timeline above, I find it very interesting that Bundy exercised all of his federal legal and administrative remedies when he allegedly does not recognize the federal gov’t. Now it could be, just maybe, that I might be a bit jaded here, but it sure smacks of someone that only recognizes the fed gov’t when it benefits him.

The other thing to note is that this dipshit constantly waves the United States flag around. What precisely does he think “unites” the states? He would, of course, say the Constitution. The Constitution, in turn, being the charter for the federal fucking gov’t that he claims not to recognize.

The Constitution didn’t create a country. The Declaration of Independence did that. The Constitution created the legal framework. It established a federal freaking republic. If this guy truly believed what he says, he’d renounce his citizenship and GTFO.

re: #536 Lidane

The comments are all a hodgepodge of BESIDE THE POINT and NO EVIDENCE with a few people saying that his comments were “inartful” but true.

I got good money on someone on the right whining about how Bundy’s “just not politically correct and he’s saying what everyone knows.”

Cliven would fit in well with the posse that Hedley Lamarr put together.

I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers and Methodists.

It’s not quite like the guy who stampeded cattle through the Vatican (kinky!), but he’s in the mix. /

They have raised the bar for what qualifies a person as “racist” these days, basically anything short of performing a lynching.

Apparently nobody has let Cliven know yet that the jig is up because the video is now on Youtube.

He doesn’t recognize the internet because it was started as a federal gov’t program.

oh, sorry. I’m not at all surprised that an elderly Texas rancher with militia ties has some outdated racist views. I hadn’t considered supporting his cause before and that hasn’t changed.

No criticism for all those republican politicians and RW talking heads who branded him a patriot and a hero?

That was their downfall. Had they simply stuck to “I support CB in his dispute with the BLM” then they could have sidestepped the issue.

But that is not their style: when they agree with someone for any reason they elevate them to “True Hero” status, just as when whey disagree with someone for any reason they brand them “losers”, “moochers”, “traitors”, “terrorist sympathizers” “Muslim Atheist” or whatever comes to mind.

Subtext. What kind of person refuses to recognize the federal government? What are their motives? For the state’s rights type, it would be the federals forcing you to serve people— we all know who— in their commercial establishment. Liberty!

Again, to any conservatives reading this: folks, this is what your political movement has come to. You’re on the same team as a lawbreaking racist who consorts with people who think women make the perfect human shields.

THIS!

re: #528 Targetpractice

So we’ve got Cliven telling Jones no video exists, but posting on Facebook that his comments were “taken out of context.” Now all we need is him declaring that he can’t be racist because he’s got black friends and we’ll have hit the “I’m not a racist, but…” trifecta.

And don’t leave out HURR HURR DEMOCRATZ IS TEH REAL RACISTS!!!!!!

re: #143 steve_davis

And once again the president wins. He calls off the dogs long enough for Bundy to make a perpetual ass of himself. By the time this is over, the cattle will be using some kind of Iphone app to contact BLM and ask that they pick all of them up down at the closest bus stop.

Cows have been milking themselves for the past few years:

[…]Robots allow the cows to set their own hours, lining up for automated milking five or six times a day — turning the predawn and late-afternoon sessions around which dairy farmers long built their lives into a thing of the past.

With transponders around their necks, the cows get individualized service. Lasers scan and map their underbellies, and a computer charts each animal’s “milking speed,” a critical factor in a 24-hour-a-day operation.

The robots also monitor the amount and quality of milk produced, the frequency of visits to the machine, how much each cow has eaten, and even the number of steps each cow has taken per day, which can indicate when she is in heat[…]

Yep. Frankly, it’s as likely that his accent mangled the “N-word” vs. saying “negro”.

I don’t see any people on welfare being sold, beaten, or hunted down by dogs if they stop taking welfare.

Yet.
