New Bombshell From the Intercept: GCHQ Asked NSA for Something, We Don’t Know if They Got It

More known unknowns from Greenwald HQ
Weird • Views: 18,534

The Intercept’s new BOMBSHELL article on the NSA reveals that British intelligence service GCHQ once requested greater access to the NSA’s databases.

I can almost hear you yawning out there.

But in true Greenwaldian fashion (although it’s written by Ryan Gallagher while Greenwald is busy not being arrested in the United States), the title is absurdly overheated: British Spy Chiefs Secretly Begged to Play in NSA’s Data Pools - the Intercept.

Britain’s electronic surveillance agency, Government Communications Headquarters, has long presented its collaboration with the National Security Agency’s massive electronic spying efforts as proportionate, carefully monitored, and well within the bounds of privacy laws. But according to a top-secret document in the archive of material provided to The Intercept by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, GCHQ secretly coveted the NSA’s vast troves of private communications and sought “unsupervised access” to its data as recently as last year - essentially begging to feast at the NSA’s table while insisting that it only nibbles on the occasional crumb.

Wow! Secretly begging to swim in the pool and feast on the vast troves, while pretending they’re only nibbling on crumbs! That’s some two-fisted journalism there.

But as usual, read on, grasshopper, and you will find that the brave journalists of The Intercept have no evidence at all that this secret swimming/feasting request was granted. I have to give them credit for not burying this information in paragraph 23 this time; it’s in paragraph 4:

The Snowden files do not indicate whether NSA granted GCHQ’s request…

That’s right — again, they’ve come up with an article that makes an extravagant claim, with no actual evidence whatsoever of wrongdoing. This is getting kind of ridiculous.

…but they do show that the NSA was “supportive” of the idea, and that GCHQ was permitted extensive access to PRISM during the London Olympics in 2012.

So the only real information they have here is that GCHQ was permitted access to the PRISM databases during the Olympics, when the threat of a terrorist attack was at the very highest level. Shocking.

Seems like the vast trove of documents stolen by Edward Snowden may be running out of bombshells.

Where Gallagher’s assumption (not fact, as far as I’m concerned) first breaks apart:

“But according to a top-secret document in the archive of material provided to The Intercept by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden…”

They’re still trying the stealth approach to rehabbing Snowden’s reputation, and I was totally unaware that Snowden ever passed on an “archive of material” to The Intercept, unless The Intercept is nothing more than a mouthpiece for Greenwald who had to be the one who provided the damned stuff, even after he denied having more than a few documents.

So, was that what Miranda was sent to Berlin for after all? And did they manage to get it through another route?

Getting “revenge” on the GCHQ and NSA in one fell swoop?

I’m shocked. SHOCKED that the Greenwaldians once again lead with BOMBSHELL HEADLINES and bury the fact that the actual evidence and facts don’t actually support the headlines.

This latest report does the same thing that countless other Greenwald screeds have done. Make assertions that the NSA is doing all kinds of nefarious things, and burying the fact that they’re plausible as there’s no evidence that the actions were taken.

They’ve waited 2 weeks between screeds, and this is what they came up with? Really? Thousands of documents, and this is what they’ve got? That the Brits asked for greater access to NSA databases, but there’s no evidence the US let them.

How this actually matters:

If the British government were able to look at the NSA data, they could potentially look at what British citizens were doing inside the UK, which could circumvent whatever civil liberties protections are in place. It’s a concern that has been in place for a long time - reciprocity on access to the data would be a workaround on civil liberties in the US as well - as the NSA or CIA could look at what the British (or other foreign government) had collected on US citizens in the US in going through the data.

But that’s not what’s being claimed here. This isn’t the NSA doing anything wrong, but an attempt to go after the British intel services for potentially doing something that may let them circumvent civil liberties protections.

25 lawhawk  Apr 30, 2014 12:04:47pm

re: #20 Targetpractice

Little of what has been attributed to the Snowden cache of documents has actually been about violations of US law (NSA spying on US citizens, overbroad spying, insufficient oversight, etc.), and an increasing number of documents about means and methods of spying that directly undermines NSA capabilities to gather intel on foreign entities, countries, terror groups, and emerging threats. Snowden went after process documents - the spycraft and means and methods, and they don’t necessarily indicate whistleblowing on violations of US law, but rather expose US national security secrets.

This again affirms that Snowden isn’t a whistleblower, but someone who committed espionage on a massive scale.

re: #46 Gus

There’s been some effort up in Canada to upgrade the safety of the railcars carrying crude oil and other petroleum products. The US has been lagging behind, and there was a call just today by the Times Union for the US to either ban all DOT-111 cars or require their immediate upgrade to higher safety standards.

At a recent forum held by the National Transportation Safety Board on rail shipments of oil and ethanol, the rail and oil industries demonstrated the same tactics each has used before, with the rail industry dragging its heels over upgrading its electronic train control equipment and the oil industry in a perpetual state of denial that shipments pose any danger at all.

But it is altogether unacceptable that the federal government seems to be unable, unwilling or otherwise unprepared to do what Canada did last week: Boldly state that the DOT-111 tanker cars must be retired or retrofitted within three years, asking for better emergency response plans from rail carriers and seeking speed and route alternatives for communities.

The rupture-prone DOT-111 cars were at the heart of the Lac Megantic, Quebec, disaster last July that killed 47 people and incinerated 30 buildings. and at least seven other significant accidents in North America in the last year. These are the cars ringing Albany, going in and out of the Port of Albany, which has become a major shipping point for crude oil carried by massive trains from the Bakken oil fields of North Dakota. Nearly 3 billion gallons are moving annually through the port.

Four New York agencies are set to deliver a report to Gov. Andrew Cuomo this month on the state’s preparedness for oil spills from trains, ships and barges. Mr. Cuomo initiated a series of “inspection blitzes” to find issues that could lead to derailments or explosions.

These DOT-111 tankers make up 70 percent of all the cars in use at a time when the production and transport of this crude oil has seen phenomenal growth. Freight railroads transported 434,032 carloads of crude in 2013, up from just 9,500 in 2008.

The oil industry, which owns or leases most tank cars and would bear much of the cost of changes, has suggested voluntary standards agreed to by rail and oil three years ago are sufficient and that, to change standards, a “comprehensive examination” (i.e., lengthy delay) is warranted. In the face of evidence to the contrary — the explosions — the oil industry says the Bakken crude is not significantly different than other light crudes, such as those from Texas, and has yet to fully comply with the Transportation Department’s request for specifics about the oil’s makeup.

For its part, the freight railroad industry has proposed tougher tank-car standards, yet acknowledges it wants explicit guidance on whether the proposals will meet the eventual new rules. It does not want to make a substantial investment, only to find the cars don’t meet future federal standards.

Since ‘trickle down’ has been a talking point for years without any evidence it exists in the wild, perhaps it is time to make it happen.

For example, a company above a certain size could be barred from having a ratio of the highest hourly rate paid to the lowest hourly rate paid exceed some number X (perhaps 100).

Netanyahu: Anti-Arab attack contradicts our values
PM responds for the first time to the recent hate crime in the Israeli Arab town of Fureidis and says it’s ‘infuriating.’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Wednesday the recent anti-Arab attack in a northern Israeli Arab town.

“What happened in Fureidis is infuriating,” Netanyahu said during a meeting with Arab, Bedouin, Druze, and Circassian Likud activists. “We are working to find those responsible. I have ordered reinforcements and we are using the Shin Bet’s tools. This is a major target because it contradicts our character and our values.”

On Monday night, vandals spray-painted a Star of David and the phrase “close mosques, not yeshivas” on a mosque. The tires of several cars parked in the area were slashed as well. On Wednesday, residents of Fureidis declared a general strike to protest the hate crime…

Head of Pentagon intelligence agency forced out, officials say

“The head of the Defense Intelligence Agency is being pushed out of the job after a series of clashes over his leadership at an agency that is under pressure to shift focus following more than a decade of war, current and former U.S. officials said.

“Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn is expected to announce Wednesday that he is leaving his job as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency more than a year before he was scheduled to depart, according to officials who said that Flynn faced mounting pressure from Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. and others in recent months.

(snip)

“The move comes at a time when the DIA is in the midst of a series of major changes, including an effort by senior Pentagon officials to expand the agency’s network of spies overseas and work more closely with the CIA. Flynn, who served as a top intelligence adviser to retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal in Iraq and Afghanistan, arrived in July 2012 with an ambitious agenda to accelerate the agency’s transformation. But critics said his management style also sowed chaos, setting aggressive plans for changes without adequate follow-through.” More

Likud is center-right.

This from 2009 gives some sense of where the political parties are on a political spectrum. 2013 saw Kadima lose big, while Yair Lapid’s party Yesh Atid gained seats (new party not on the pdf) and would probably fall somewhere between Kadima and Likud.

Kadima was formed when Sharon split with Likud and got members from both Labor and Likud to join.

Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has been arrested by Northern Ireland police in connection with the 1972 murder of Jean McConville.

Mrs McConville, a 37-year-old widow and mother of 10, was abducted from her flat in the Divis area of west Belfast and shot by the IRA.

Her body was recovered from a beach in County Louth in 2003.

Police said a 65-year-old man presented himself to Antrim police station on Wednesday evening and was arrested.

In a statement, Sinn Féin said: “Last month Gerry Adams said he was available to meet the PSNI about the Jean McConville case. That meeting is taking place this evening.”

Mrs McConville, one of Northern Ireland’s Disappeared, was kidnapped in front of her children after being wrongly accused of being an informer.

I’ll also note that the report from the BBC indicates that NI police issued a statement about a 65-year-old man, which is exactly what police forces do when they want to confirm an arrest but are prevented from releasing the arrestee’s name. Seems unlikely that the BBC would have inserted “arrested” if that wasn’t in the statement.

The nature of the coalition governments in Israel is that a small party in the coalition (or a faction within the major party itself) can force the larger party (like Likud) to shift to the right or left, depending on the issue and the threat of leaving the coalition. Happens all the time. In recent years, Likud has shifted to the right because of The Jewish Home party, particularly when it comes to dealing with the Palestinians.

While Lapid’s Yesh Atid is willing to engage with the Palestinians and allow for some concessions, Jewish Home is pushing to annex C areas in the West Bank.

Man Who Shot Teens Who Broke Into Home Guilty of Murder

Little Falls, Minn. - A man who shot and killed two teenagers who broke into his home has been convicted of premeditated murder.

The Pioneer Press reported that it took jurors less than three hours to convict Byron Smith, 65, of murdering Nick Brady, 17, and Haile Kifer, 18. Smith had claimed self-defense in the Thanksgiving 2012 slayings.

The newspaper reported that a key piece of evidence was an audio recording of the shootings in which Smith taunted the dying teenagers. The audio can be heard here.

I hope one of the locals can figure out how to file a lawsuit against the county, then, for the civil rights violations being done by the militia and the county’s unwillingness to interfere.

I don’t know if that’s technically possible, but i’d hope so.

I also hope that the sheriff faces serious and well organized and financed local opposition when he runs for reelection.

Caveat: Assuming that the sheriff is actually *not* actively working to prevent these abuses. As mentioned in a following comment it is possible he faces the same issues as the BLM - how to defuse the situation without triggering a firefight and bystanders getting killed.

The guy taped (and apparently also filmed) the break-in.

“Byron Smith, a 65-year-old retiree who once set up security in American embassies for the U.S. State Department, shot Nick Brady, 17, and Haile Kifer, 18, multiple times after they broke into his home on Thanksgiving Day 2012. “

He deserved the verdict. So, let’s inform the RW that one of theirs is really the one responsible for Benghazi.

Those were just kids, who, if they had simply been detained while he, armed, was in another room calling the cops, may have simply been jailed and given a second chance to turn their lives around.

They never got it because this guy set himself up as judge and executioner.

Vanderboegh’s Three Percenters group, named after the number of American colonists they believe fought against the British in the revolutionary war, was listed in a recent Oath Keepers press release as a stalwart of the standoff at the Bundy ranch. Vandeboegh, who wrote a novel that allegedly inspired a domestic terrorist plot in 2011, is also known for his role in pushing the “Fast and Furious” scandal.

“All over this country, we are still staring civil war in its bloody face,” Vanderboegh warned the crowd, in a video posted by Tom Lacovara, the host of an anti-government radio show.

Vanderboegh claimed that Sen. Harry Reid, who has criticized the Bundy ranch militias, “is promising us all civil war on a vast scale, because state-sponsored violence is they only way they can win an argument with free people, especially free people who are armed and who are willing to use those arms in defense of liberty.”

Vanderboegh then told the legend of an Alabama woman named Jenny Brooks whose husband and son, according to Vanderboegh’s version of the story, were killed by state law enforcement collecting taxes for the Confederate government. According to the tale, Brooks went after the men who had killed her family, killed two of them in return, and turned one of their skulls into a soap dish.

Vanderboegh then pulled out a skull and declared that he would present it to Reid as the “2014 Award for Incitement to Civil War.”

He added: “Don’t poke the wolverine with a sharp stick, Harry, unless you want your balls ripped off.”

re: #188 Rev_Arthur_Belling

Do you have a link to this anywhere? All I’ve seen is reporting on the original letter.

And, I can’t really blame the Sheriff for not wanting to roll up on this shitshow fail parade expecting to haul away some perps. His department is probably woefully understaffed to do so, not to mention the potential for real ammo flying all over the place.

There are plenty of police who show up and stand around at an officer shooting or at the hospital when an officer is shot, all with their police cars. I think they’ve got enough to pull together to go round up this bunch.

re: #182 Targetpractice

My understanding is that Sheriff’s Gillespie’s response to the letter was the bureaucratic equivalent of “Fuck off.”

If that’s what he did, he’s forgotten that he like the Congressman is elected by a majority of the voters - and his county includes Las Vegas, not just the ranchers.

Thank you Mr. Feldstein for a good part of my early education and helping me see things in ways “normal” media just didn’t offer in the early 60s and on.

I won’t hold against you the fact that my parents were called and all hell broke out when one of your publications was found in my desk in 5th grade in Sister Freida’s home room. It was worth it, especially when my dad’s reaction was…”they got me out of work for this!” Yeah, dad was upset…for me taking it to school and sharing it with my buddies. He said I should have known it would upset the nuns and my mom. Outside that, he thought some of it was pretty funny too.

RIP.

Our nuns, who had us 24/7, were cool with ‘Mad’. Ours tended to the Nuns on a Bus approach. A fusion of ‘Mad’ and nuns makes a workable ethic for a teenager.

And if I read the article right he shot one of them in the basement, pulled them aside, and then waited for the other one to come downstairs and shot that one as well.

Why did the teen go down into the basement after hearing shots from down there? (Sounds like a slasher movie plot.)

Unless the guy was using a suppressed weapon I would think that the sound of the gunshots would have carried through the house and been heard. And since the teens were unarmed you would think the second one would know that gunshots were a bad thing.

Yeah, these guys are past being irrelevant:

Other than the tape, things that helped nailed him included the fact he didn’t report the shooting till the next day (and in fact when someone was checking around about the kids), that he moved the bodies, that he’d obviously shot the girl after she was down and wounded (angle of entry, blood splatter, and powder burn on last entry point).

Where he thought he had a defense was that this was the second time the boy had entered the house to steal things.

But it’s the last shot as recorded from the tape that nailed him. Shoot a couple of times, tell her she’s dying, then shoots her again from closer range instead of calling police or ambulance.

re: #190 Justanotherhuman

He shot the 18 yr old girl 4 times and called her “bitch”, telling her to “die”.

Sounds like he shot her later a 5th time.

The tape itself convicted him. What a fucking coward and a cold blooded killer. Called them “vermin”.

I just sent an email to one of the local stations asking if they have any more news or are following up with Sheriff Gillespie and what he plans to do about these armed nutjobs out in Bunkerville. I shall report back if I receive a response.

Hmmm. I guess it wouldn’t bother me one bit if out in the desert some of these bozos decided to have themselves a little AR rifle pissing match to see who is the baddest and deserves to be the leader of the pack. You know how ‘boys’ can be.

If they do go full-on stupid, maybe some of the milder ones will realize all of them are nuts and the best thing to do is pack up your guns and head home, and forget about being in some stupid militia org.

Am I the only one that could see these guys turning against each other? Hell, it’s almost like having three or four biker gangs vying for attention. Pretty soon a little riot is gonna break out.

And maybe the sheriff is also a bit worried about that too.

Yes. It would appear from his fevered prose that GCHQ also couldn’t wait to get its hands on the NSA’s top secret “Mixing Metaphors” technology.

You must be in complete denial of the government’s role in making sure that we aren’t taken by surprise again, and to be able to follow the actions of people who do not mean us well. You must think, well, Olympics is good, but it’s purely evil if the PRISM database was shared with a friendly ally when they needed to watch who was going to visit.
