Advice for Male Republicans From Female Republicans: “Don’t Talk About Anything in the Bedroom”

“Change the subject … talk about .. um ya, talk about the Seahawks.”

1/25/14 Susan Hutchison & State Representative Liz Pike @ WA Mainstream Republicans’ Roanoke Conference (Ocean Shores, WA)

WA State GOP Chair Susan Hutchison: So I’d like to add to men; Please don’t mention the word ‘rape’ in any way. Also, let’s not talk about anything to do with women’s reproductive cycles or um um women’s sexuality or um. Let’s just leave that to the women to discuss. Could we just, could we just agree on that? And if somebody tries to needle you, if you’re a, if you’re a candidate just, just change the subject. Talk about um, ya, talk about the Seahawks. Talk about something else.

State Rep. Liz Pike (R- Camas): Thank you for your comments, I am a state rep. in the 18th district, just south of the LD here, and I have some advice for male candidates, for Republicans; Don’t talk about anything in the bedroom or the doctors office.

Susan Hutchison: Bingo. Ya.

It’s sad to say that’s actually good advice; it’s an improvement on the norm.

Future Press Conference…

Do I believe in a womans right to choose?

I believe a woman should be able to choose tickets to any Seahawks game she wants.

Next question

Yea, that will work just fine. idiots

Rebranding, you’re doing it … well, terribly actually, to the point that you have to explicitly tell your candidates to STFU.

Well, they’re partially there. Now, if they’d only shut up about anything having to do with a woman’s body.

11 Targetpractice  Apr 30, 2014 6:12:33pm

Sad state of affairs when the only option for a political party when it comes to women’s issues is to change the subject.

How about them Seahawks?!

13 klys  Apr 30, 2014 6:13:18pm

Shutting up about it is one thing, but it does no good if they continue to vote how they currently think.

I’d rather they open their big, fat mouths so voters know exactly what they’re getting.

However, we’ll have to have a little talk about JPEG artifacts.

Twitter’s image uploading code is compressing the JPG images to the point where artifacts are very visible in areas of solid color. Unfortunately, programmers can’t change the quality setting for uploaded images.

In other words, it’s Twitter’s fault.

Regarding the wingnut seething over the halal Subways:

Subway opened some kosher locations but they did not do well.

Personally, I can totally understand that. I would not eat at a Subway if there were any other options available, including buying a bag of Italian rolls and some meat from the deli counter and building my own sandwiches at home.

If I was traveling through freaking Louisville or Cleveland and there were no other kosher options available, I might eat at a Subway.

Subway opened outlets in areas with large Jewish populations like New York, LA, Miami, and everyone chose other kosher venues instead of Subway.

That made me think of a skit I saw years ago, during the first big “Militia” movement. A bunch of stereotypical militia type sitting around, and suddenly the door gets kicked in… in comes FBI, You all are under arrest.

Each one of the militia then pulls out a badge, FBI, DHS, State Police, etc. There was one poor guy who was actually militia, the rest were all infiltrators. If I recall, the militia guy sneaked out while the rest were arguing about who gets to arrest him.

Pardon me for a little break off topic…I was on YouTube looking for some Bob Hoskins to remind me of some of his work as he passed away earlier today at the age of 71. I think I have posted before how Terry Gilliam’s Brazil was always one of my favorite dark comedy movies…it has all kinds of fun material covered in it and I always loved Hoskins’ character as one of the government maintenance guys from Central Services. Instead of somber, I want to remember him making us smile too.

I’ve got a set of their “better quality” wood turning chisels, not nearly as nice my good ones, but work well enough… HSS and since they are so cheap I don’t feel bad that I’ve ground them down to stubs trying out different grinds, experimenting with sharpening jigs, etc.

I bought a bunch of little tiny welding clamp vise grip pliers there. (maybe 3.50 each). They are the best thing in the world when I’m gluing up segmented / laminated blanks. Super tight clamp with just one hand.

I’ve also gotten a bunch of their various C and F clamps, along with ratchet clamps. Work almost as good as the expensive ones, and I always have a couple of extras to toss into the mix.

One thing I’ve learned over the years. 1 Clamp isn’t a clamp, it’s a pivot point.

There are never enough clamps! I’ve got corner clamps, three sizes of c-clamps, several of the quick-grip sliding ones, a bunch of small pinch type, and for the big jobs…several black pipe clamps with variable lengths of pipe. I was just taking off on Kilgore’s mention of antimusic. The 10cc song was a big dig on a lot of the bands in the early 70s…so it was a bit anti. And it fit the theme of the Jon LaJoie stuff.

Goofin’ about fun music with fun lyrics too…which sadly some do not consider as good music. I know many that hated Zappa and never took his musical talents serious because they saw his stuff as weird, off-color, way-out-there zaniness…but never serious. Their loss. There have been others.

Male Republicans

there’s yer problem raht there

139 freetoken  Apr 30, 2014 8:59:41pm

Party of God, indeed: In Ohio, for the Ohio legislature, the local GOP candidates square off for their primary, competing on being for Godly, or more for God, or mostest for God:

[…]

Doug Chamberlain

[…]

I believe in thrift, hard work, individual freedom and responsibility, smaller and less intrusive government, our Constitutional form of government, defense of the Second Amendment, traditional marriage between a man and a woman, and the protection of all life from conception to death. Having been elected three times as a conservative Republican first as a County Prosecutor and twice as a Family Court Judge, these principles ought to be a given for a Republican, […]

Robert Luckey

[…]

The first time I took a political stance was to protect the constitutional right to life, I marched in a pro-Life rally with my father. Recently I signed the painless petition to support pro-life laws, and I worked to support many other pro-life issues and candidates all this time between. I have always been dedicated to God, family, and country and doing all I can in my duties to God, family and county. In 2005 I gave a speech in Dayton Ohio to a group of Republicans, I titled the speech: “God family and country”, about those important things.

[…]

Nino Vitale

[…] Our government spends too much of our money, has become too intrusive into our lives, and has removed God from the public square. I consider myself a Christian Constitutional Conservative—in this order. Our government was founded on Judeo-Christian values and government should be at the service of the people, not the other way around. I have studied our founding fathers through Hillsdale College, and it is very clear. If we look at the history behind the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Federalist Papers, we see the influence of morality as given by God on the framers and the idea of limited, conservative government.

[…]

First, my family and I have been Pro-Life Leaders for almost 10 years. I have been V.P. of our local Right to Life group, designed billboards, placed educational literature on campuses, participated in parades to protect the unborn, and now serve as a board member of our local pregnancy center. Life and Family need to be celebrated, not redefined—this is foundational to me. God didn’t create the state first, he created the family first. I am the only candidate endorsed by Ohio Right to Life.

Second, I am a firm believer in our Second Amendment and our right to keep and bear arms. I am an NRA instructor and my oldest son is Ohio’s youngest NRA apprentice instructor. He received his credentials at 13. We teach firearm safety and CCW classes to hundreds. The Second Amendment is the backstop to our freedom and liberty.

[…]

Fourth, liberty and religious freedom are the bedrock of this country. This is why our family business has taken the step to be one of only 42 private companies in the nation to sue Obamacare. It is not fun to have to sue your own government, but when an injustice is being done, we must stand and fight. Our family business is actively doing something about Obamacare.

[…]

Party of God “ought to be a given for a Republican”.

Proposed GOP resolution asserts state’s right to nullify federal laws

In Wisconsin, the party of Abraham Lincoln will be deciding this weekend whether it favors not only the right to secession but also the right to nullify federal laws.

Delegates at the state Republican convention are set to vote Saturday on a proposed resolution that directs lawmakers to push through legislation nullifying Obamacare, Common Core educational standards and “drone usage in the state of Wisconsin.”

“Be it further resolved,” the proposal concludes, “that we strongly insist our state representatives work to uphold Wisconsin’s 10th Amendment rights, and our right to, under extreme circumstances, secede, passing legislation affirming this to the U.S. Federal Government.”

China: Game of Thrones ‘heavily edited’, fans say

Chinese fans of the US television series Game of Thrones are up in arms after an apparently heavily edited version of the show’s fourth season aired on Sunday.

With pirate copies of the full version available on the internet, many Chinese viewers quickly realised how much of the programme had been cut out of state-run CCTV’s broadcast, the South China Morning Post reports.

“They’ve cut about a quarter of all the fight scenes, then a quarter of the nude scenes,” one fan writes on the Weibo social network. “I guess that’s okay if all you want to watch is a medieval European castle documentary.” […]

The fourth season of Game of Thrones was shown in China just as four other popular US TV shows were pulled off the air. The Chinese media regulator said in an editorial that first appeared in the People’s Daily newspaper on Monday it had to remove The Big Bang Theory, The Practice, The Good Wife and police drama NCIS to prevent the “negative effects and hidden security dangers” of streaming foreign programmes.

Yeah, I had to upgrade to Win7 by necessity, but it’s so close to XP in a lot of ways that the transition was easy. And the ways that weren’t the same were generally significant improvements, chief among them an automated backup feature.

But really, it seems like the guys at Mozilla are going down the Microsoft route: Make the damn thing more bloated with each new upgrade, while further restricting user customization. Every version before now, I could move the address bar above the tabs because that’s what I was comfortable with, and the reload button was a separate icon you could move around. Now? Unless you download a second-party app, the address bar is bolted to the spot below the tabs and the reload button is welded to the address bar. ARGH!

This Compaq computer’s properties shows 93 GB of RAM—could that be right? It was used by a taxi co and bought second hand with stripped down XP software. According to the properties info, I’m currently only using 17.5 GB. Surely that can’t be right?

I think my last Dell computer had 1.5 GB of Ram, and I put in extra.

Depends, if it’s Windows XP 64-bit edition, then yeah, it could actually have 93GB of RAM because that OS can handle up to 128GB. Though what sort of programs a taxi company was running on 64-bit XP, I have no idea.

Heh, no prob. It’s still a learning process for me, I didn’t even know there was a way to check the health of my HDD until a couple weeks ago. Speaking of which, I’m beginning to think I may end up replacing it in the next year, perhaps with a 2TB drive.

My grandson just picked up on it with his buddies, without any training whatsoever, so I leave the tech stuff to him. OTOH, he’s never read the wonderful literature I’ve read, either, so he’s missed out on more than I think I have. : )

Most of what I know I picked up mostly through necessity. I started getting interested in computer games early in life, and being a latchkey kid, I had to get my dad to teach me how to work DOS to boot up my games when he wasn’t home. Anderson pointed out that God, in the book of Genesis, had made childbearing painful to punish women for their Original Sin, adding that the husband “shall rule over thee.”

He argued that feminism had “given women the power” to decide when to have children for themselves, allowing them to have careers and follow other interests.

“It used to be a young women, she gets married, she has children, and that’s her job,” he lamented. “They literally count my wife as unemployed! She’s not unemployed, she doesn’t want to be employed. I mean, she’s a wife, she’s a mother.”

Anderson said that danger of birth control was that it had “systemic effects” on a woman’s health and her “character.”

“Not only does birth control do damage to women, it hurts their body if they’re using the pills. And it also affects their character, causing them to be an idle, tattler, gossip, turning aside after Satan,” he insisted.

Women would “get into sin” if they were not “busy” raising children, Anderson said.

I just had a sudden and startling thought:

In areas with ‘common law’ marriage and gay marriage, is there now common law gay marriage?

The common law marriage statute in New Hampshire, for example, is:

[P]ersons cohabiting and acknowledging each other as husband and wife, and generally reputed to be such, for the period of 3 years, and until the decease of one of them, shall thereafter be deemed to have been legally married.

It says ‘husband and wife’, so would this need a challenge by a gay couple who had been living together and recognizing each other as spouses without being married to make it apply to gay couples?

I’d asked Pawlenty what he considers reasonable for a wage hike, but got nothing in return. He knows that reasonable efforts to change the minimum wage or do UI are the kiss of death for the TP/GOP, so everyone’s screwed in the interim.

So, there was a report out today that indicated that the average American spends $1,200 on fast food each year.

If the minimum wage was increased to $10.10, and the resulting costs by the businesses went up by 10% as a result (which is what I’ve seen would be the outcome of a wage hike), then the person would end up spending $120 more for the year. The worker who would benefit from the wage hike? They’d get a living wage, which means they could spend more on everything they need, and reduce their burden on the safety net.

The wingnuts keep insisting that fast food workers will be replaced by machines. They don’t realize that a burger-making machine (which currently only exists in a prototype) costs much more than 3 workers, and service engineers make much more than minimum wage.

Without going into the details, I think the issue is more on GCHQ’s side, if they’ve used data sharing with the NSA as a way to get around legal restrictions on the type of data they’re allowed to collect. At least, that’s my high level take on this.

Of course, the question of “should they be allowed to collect that data anyway” is a different one.

223 lawhawk  May 1, 2014 6:41:49am

re: #212 Fairly Sure I’m Still Obdicut

I’m not sure how NH handles this, let alone the other states that accept common law marriage, which are a distinct minority of states. NH appears to respect common law marriage only for probate purposes. But a quick reading of the applicable law:

The common law provision is here.

Persons cohabiting and acknowledging each other as husband and wife, and generally reputed to be such, for the period of 3 years, and until the decease of one of them, shall thereafter be deemed to have been legally married.

NH 457:1a indicates that marriage is allowed between two people who each are eligible to be married, regardless of gender.

That law would seemingly address the common law provision, and reading the two together would show intent to treat common law gay marriage in the same fashion as a hetero common law marriage as the state intended to allow SSM and equal access to marriage. Therefore, a common law gay couple would be able to gain probate of the estate as a married couple allowing the transfer of assets as though they had been married.

That’s my take as well- and indicated as much yesterday. This isn’t the NSA violating federal law, but rather the GCHQ’s possible circumvention of British civil liberties laws.

Now, if all this was happening during the London Olympics, and I were British intel looking for potential threats against their equivalent of a national security event, I’d want to look at all intel sources I could, to try and find any threats that might be missed through the internal chain of intel gathering. Asking the NSA for intel would be one of the things that any reasonable intel agency would do in that place, and if the safeguards are in place, then this is yet another nothingburger from Greenwald.

I think, to the extent this goes anywhere, the crux of this will be the extent to which people accept that rationale, as opposed to rejecting what is essentially, to me, the “bending the rules is OK in special circumstances” argument. As you can probably tell, I fall mostly in the latter camp but I’m not totally unsympathetic to that argument.

Asking the NSA for intel would be one of the things that any reasonable intel agency would do in that place, and if the safeguards are in place, then this is yet another nothingburger from Greenwald.

But it does rather depend on exactly what the safeguards are. If they place strong restrictions on the type of data that can be legally collected, then circumventing them is an issue.

I hate it when sites mess around with titles. Various title incarnations of the Slate article….
If you search Google news the headline is “Why the new Benghazi emails aren’t a “smoking gun.”
The slate front page says the headline is “Proof the White House has been spinning Benghazi since day one”

If you click on the article itself the page says the headline is “Lies, Damned Lies, and Garden-Variety Self-Deception”
They all lead to the same article with the same content. Just pick a headline and stick to it.

700 Migrants Rush at Spain’s Border, 140 Breach It

The migrants on Thursday rushed the fences in two waves, with 500 arriving in the early hours and another 200 four hours later.

By afternoon, more than 150 people remained perched on an outside border fence, fending off police by setting fire to clothing and throwing it at them, Spain said. Some even swung batons wrenched away from officers.

Click bait. Everyone reads what they want to see. The TL;DR crowd gets what they want - the headline to repeat.

Reading through, and the conclusion is that nothing in the new revelation changes anything about Benghazi, or the Administration’s response during those critical hours and days. There was nothing the DoD could do in a timeframe that could have saved the Ambassador, and it was only after Benghazi that the President ordered the formation of a fast-response strike team.

Where you get issues is that the Administration dragged its feet in releasing the latest bit of emails, which were requested months ago. Had they done everything in a single document dump, the new emails would have not changed anything. They still don’t change anything, except the right wing thinks that it does.

Sun’s out here, also, with a high of 76 and I’m catching up on laundry as a result (we use a laundry room that’s about 30 yds from my apt). We never got the horrible thunderstorms, wind, etc up here they predicted, although Charlotte saw a bit of light flooding. I think that storm went further east than they thought it would, since most of the really horrible stuff was in eastern NC (tornados, heavy flooding, etc).

re: #169 freetoken

It’s sort of a small world after all:

China: Game of Thrones ‘heavily edited’, fans say

Nothing new here. When the 3D version of Titanic was released for theatrical showing in China, the censors cut out Kate Winslet’s nude scene and the steamy (literally!) sex in the old Renault — or whatever that old car was. But moviegoers had seen the original version intact, so they knew something was missing.

The current administration seems especially wary of “Western influences” contained in our TV shows and movies, maybe more so than when Hu Jintao was president. Trouble is, most of China’s movie and TV offerings are crap, and the Chinese audiences know it. So, they watch foreign stuff pirated from the Internet and bootleg DVDs. There are entire websites here whose revenue stream depends on pirated TV shows and movies. They sell advertisements that precede the streaming programming.

Blocking and censoring foreign media can only be effective if China completely strangles the Internet, but its economy depends on the Web. For the time being, the clever Chinese netizen can watch whatever he or she damn well pleases.

YAYY TEXAS NO MOAR REGULASHUNS!!!!!

That got me looking around a little. Lookie what I found. I pasted a lot more than 4 paragraphs, with the idea this is a kind of advertisement and public notice from a law firm

Maybe I should not add this but well WTH-Anti nuclear advocates take note of the following when considering employee safety statistics

During 2003-2007, the fatality rate among oil and gas extraction workers was nearly eight times that for all U.S. workers.

Drilling oil and gas wells industries had a rate of 4 cases of nonfatal injuries and illnesses per 100 equivalent full-time workers. The rate for injuries and illnesses by size of business was:
1 - 10 Workers (7.5 cases per 100 workers)
11 - 49 Workers (13.7 cases per 100 workers)
50 - 249 Workers (4 cases per 100 workers)
250 - 999 Workers (3.5 cases per 100 workers)
1000+ Workers (0.9 cases per 100 workers)
Nearly half of all fatal injuries were attributed to highway motor-vehicle crashes and workers being struck by machinery or equipment. Gas explosion injuries, fires, chemical burns and dangerous falls or falling objects or equipment— workers are often hit on the head or back by tools or equipment—are just a few of the dangers occurring on a regular basis in the oil and gas industry.

Texas Oil and Gas production is booming and is expected to reach an all-time high by 2016, mainly due to Texas oil and gas drilling. Greater production means a greater increase in jobs, but rapid development—particularly in South Texas oil and gas— means that more workers are subject to injury. Texas oil and gas lawyers are increasingly seeing more accident and injury claims as oil and gas companies increase their rigs, often with unskilled well drilling and well maintenance workers.

Combined with the physical demands of the job and long shifts (roughnecks often work 72 hour shifts), workplace accidents are bound to occur. Furthermore, some companies are in such a hurry to increase production that they may fail to disregard OSHA safety standards or fail to properly maintain equipment. Common causes of oil and gas accidents include inadequate safety training and disregard for safety measures, defective equipment and improperly maintained equipment.

While injuries are covered by Workers Compensation, the Texas law of oil and gas ensures that companies and contractors are held responsible should negligence occur. OSHA safety standards protect drilling rig workers both onshore and offshore, but companies often disregard rules and regulations.

Federal statistics count 1,300 drilling rig injuries in the Gulf of Mexico from 2006-2010, and 41 worker fatalities. (Eleven deaths were the result of the BP Deepwater Horizon explosion and 15 deaths at the Texas refinery explosion in Texas City.) According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2008 Texas had more fatalities in the oil and gas extraction industry (41) than any other state.

1. A bunch of people are against Hillary/Obama and these hearings are not changing that opinion.
2. A bunch of people are for Hillary/Obama and these hearings are not changing that opinion.
3. I guess the nth hearing is converting someone form pro- to anti-.
4. I guess the nth hearing is convincing someone that this is a huge waste of time and money and thus converting them from anti- to pro-.

Is Group #3 and #4 of any appreciable size at this point? And is the difference in size between Group #3 and Group #4; e.g. net change in opinion of any size at all?

And a 20% assault rate on women on the nation’s college campuses is totally unacceptable.

(snip)

“Citing research, the White House has said that 1 in 5 female students is assaulted. President Barack Obama appointed a task force comprised of his Cabinet members to review the issue after hearing complaints about the poor treatment of campus rape victims and the hidden nature of such crimes.

“The task force announced the creation of a website, notalone.gov, offering resources for victims and information about past enforcement actions on campuses. The task force also made a wide range of recommendations to schools, such as identifying confidential victims’ advocates and conducting surveys to better gauge the frequency of sexual assault on their campuses.

“The department publicized guidance on Title IX’s sexual assault provisions in 2011, and complaints by students have since increased. Complaints, however, don’t always lead to an investigation.” More

Yes, but he was arrested, so it wasn’t just a “helping police with their inquiries” thing. Based on what’s been reported so far it sounds like he could be charged as an accessory, or for withholding evidence, or whatever.

Mr Adams has spent the night in custody after going to Antrim police station, where he was arrested.

The updated BBC report indicates that he’s been arrested under the Terrorism Act of 2000, which allows for an immediate 24-48 hours of arrest without charge, which can be extended (by a judge) up to 28 days before a charge is brought.

It’s celebrated in 80 countries as Int’l Workers Day, a public holiday.

Apparently so, not that I knew that before looking it up just now. Arrest without charge is problematic from a civil liberties point of view, but at least this version has judicial oversight and police don’t just get to kick the shit out of people without negative consequences.

Lá Bealtaine
en.wikipedia.org

“…It marked the beginning of summer and was when cattle were driven out to the summer pastures. Rituals were performed to protect the cattle, crops and people, and to encourage growth. Special bonfires were kindled, and their flames, smoke and ashes were deemed to have protective powers. The people and their cattle would walk around the bonfire, or between two bonfires, and sometimes leap over flames or embers. All household fires would be doused and then re-lit from the Beltane bonfire. Doors, windows, byres and the cattle themselves would be decorated with yellow May flowers, perhaps because they evoked fire.”

You appear to be living in a bizarre fantasy world, in which the fact that anarchists have on occasion appeared in the midst of labor organizers makes anyone who thinks workers get a bad deal from contemporary capitalism a supported of anarchism.

This regardless of the fact that bad actors have also appeared in the ranks of the police and indeed society power structures more generally, such that the same rationale should lead you to condemn the police as supporters of brutal oppression.

It is possible to believe both that most police officers are decent human beings and that most pro-labor activists are decent human beings.

I recently starting taking long walks around my neighborhood and learned of a Portland tradition I never noticed before. Sometimes they’re pretty good.

Hypocrites from the pulpit (I’ve lost count which episode this is):

Sexual adventurism and a penchant for porn is what toppled charismatic Pastor Bob Coy from the leadership of Calvary Chapel, the Fort Lauderdale megachurch he founded nearly 30 years ago, according to another pastor.

“Our former pastor was caught in sin,” Outreach Pastor Chet Lowe told a congregation in a 78-minute service earlier this month. “Our pastor, he committed adultery with more than one woman. Our pastor, he committed sexual immorality, habitually, through pornography.

“Rest assured, God will not be mocked.”

Coy, 58, resigned April 3 from the 20,000-member church he and his wife Diane founded in 1985. In announcing his departure, the church would only say Coy was guilty of a “moral failing.”

But during an April 16 sermon titled “The Fear of God,” Lowe discussed Coy’s resignation.

“Your pastors have wept,” Lowe said. “We have never felt a grief like this.”

It was God, he said, who brought Coy’s hidden guilt to light. “Your sins will find you out,” Lowe said. “Jesus, because he loved him, exposed him publicly.”

John Vaughan, director of the Megachurch Research Center in Springfield, Mo., said he too was shocked to hear of Coy’s infidelity. “I was really surprised,” he said. “I always had a high regard for Bob and his church.”

re: #310 Targetpractice

Benghazi is being used like Whitewater was with Clinton, as the springboard for a special committee that the House GOP committee can then use to dig as hard and as deep as they can for possible dirt to use in 2016.

Probably a whole chapter dedicated to the tactic in some strategy book somewhere.

Sometimes you just have to try something to see how it goes-and know when to quit when it doesn’t work out.
Kids, friends and Napa Valley sounds good.

441 HappyWarrior  May 1, 2014 10:34:58am

I like how they concern troll about teenage workers. Yeah because teenage workers don’t deserve fair wages and teenagers are the only ones working minimum wage jobs. What’s truly sick and fucked up about their ideology is they want to get rid of things like food stamps, welfare, etc and deny a minimum wage. They’re creating a permanent impoverished people by doing this shit but I guess that’s the point.

It doesn’t matter how much they get paid, just so long as they work apparently, and then poverty will go away.
